Welcome to Reporting Scotland. Tonight on your national news:

:00:13.:00:17.

The News of the World and the Tommy Sheridan perjury trial - police are

:00:17.:00:27.
:00:27.:00:29.

asked to investigate the evidence given by some witnesses.

:00:30.:00:36.

Individuals such as food ball- players, athletes and TV stars,

:00:36.:00:42.

Olympic athletes and their spouses and even a murder victim.

:00:42.:00:45.

Also in the programme tonight: Waste not want not - the 50,000

:00:45.:00:48.

tonnes of food that hotels and restaurants throw away each year.

:00:48.:00:51.

Messing about on the River - salmon fishermen say they're being driven

:00:51.:00:54.

away from the Tay by commercial rafting.

:00:54.:00:57.

And playing out of the world's biggest bunker - we're live at the

:00:58.:01:07.

Scottish Open as the Castle Stuart Prosecutors have asked Strathclyde

:01:07.:01:09.

Police to investigate witness statements from the Tommy Sheridan

:01:09.:01:12.

perjury trial, after fresh allegations in the News of the

:01:12.:01:16.

World hacking scandal. Three journalists associated with the

:01:16.:01:19.

paper gave evidence at the trial, including its former editor Andy

:01:19.:01:24.

Coulson. Mr Sheridan's lawyer and a senior MP have presented a list of

:01:24.:01:29.

names to police of people they claim had their phones hacked. Our

:01:29.:01:38.

political correspondent Raymond Buchanan reports. This was the day

:01:38.:01:42.

Tommy Sheridan was convicted of lying in court and sentenced to

:01:42.:01:47.

three years in prison. His legal team claimed he had been done end

:01:47.:01:51.

by his enemies and none were greater than the News of the World

:01:51.:01:55.

and its owners. Several million pounds of public money was spent

:01:55.:01:59.

investigating me and my wife. Is it not time that similar resources

:01:59.:02:03.

were devoted to investigating the activities of the News of the

:02:03.:02:10.

World? Are amongst those questioned by Tommy Sheridan in the witness

:02:10.:02:16.

box was the former editor of the UK edition of the News of the World.

:02:16.:02:21.

At the Coulson was asked, did the News of the World pay for police

:02:21.:02:26.

officers? Not to my knowledge was his answer. It has now been alleged

:02:26.:02:30.

that he did authorise payments. The editor of the Scottish edition

:02:30.:02:34.

claimed in court that details -- e- mails about the case had been lost.

:02:34.:02:39.

It has now been reported that they could have been available after all.

:02:39.:02:45.

Today it has been asked of officers here as Strathclyde for two you can

:02:45.:02:48.

-- we examine certain witness evidence. It follows the scandal

:02:48.:02:51.

surrounding the News of the World in recent days. Police have been

:02:51.:02:57.

asked to come up with a preliminary assessment. This afternoon, Tommy

:02:57.:03:02.

Sheridan's lawyer and a senior Labour MP handed over a dossier to

:03:02.:03:08.

detectives. They want police to re- examine the evidence given in court

:03:08.:03:12.

and to contact scores of people this they may have been victim to

:03:12.:03:18.

phone hacking. Nine months ago, we were presented with a dossier of

:03:18.:03:22.

individuals such as football players, heart surgeons, a soap

:03:22.:03:30.

stars, athletes, TV stars, TV chefs, an Olympic athlete lakes, Lord

:03:30.:03:35.

Mayor's and even a murder victim. The potential Voicemail victims are

:03:35.:03:44.

not being named. This man died on operation in Iraq. Her mother

:03:44.:03:47.

turned her grief into a high- profile campaign to bring the

:03:47.:03:52.

troops home. Now she is trying to find out if her voice mail has been

:03:52.:04:01.

intercepted. I think it is shocking. How low can someone go? I do not

:04:01.:04:08.

think they could stoop any lower. Sheridan and his lawyer always

:04:08.:04:13.

claimed they were battling and media empire. The News of the World

:04:13.:04:20.

may now be gone, but Mr Sheridan's conviction remains.

:04:20.:04:27.

Raymond Buchanan is with me now. How is always likely to affect

:04:27.:04:32.

conviction -- the conviction of Tommy Sheridan? Well, his legal

:04:32.:04:37.

team are appealing his conviction. It is worth putting this into some

:04:37.:04:42.

sort of context. There are three significant witnesses from the News

:04:42.:04:46.

of the World in what was a three- month long perjury trial. Lots of

:04:46.:04:51.

other witnesses also accused Tommy Sheridan of lying and that is what

:04:51.:04:56.

the jury decided would be their verdict when the convicted him of

:04:56.:05:00.

perjury. So it may well be significant in the future, but it

:05:00.:05:04.

is worth putting it in the context -- context but also other people

:05:04.:05:08.

believed he was a liar as well and that may have been what helps make

:05:08.:05:14.

the jury. His legal team are asking detectives to look through a

:05:14.:05:18.

substantial dossier, of which I have a copy here, the whole point

:05:18.:05:22.

of this is that they believe that other people may well be guilty of

:05:22.:05:25.

misleading the court and they want police officers to pursue them with

:05:25.:05:32.

the same vigour. The stunning device to -- demise to date of the

:05:32.:05:36.

News of the World, what effect will that have? For the Sheridan team,

:05:36.:05:40.

this is a very personal battle that they had between themselves and

:05:40.:05:46.

what they described as the Murdoch empire. Tommy Sheridan is currently

:05:46.:05:50.

in prison and I think tonight that he will be delighted at the news

:05:51.:05:55.

that the News of the World will be no more. As I say, in terms of into

:05:55.:06:00.

-- of his conviction, there were lots of other witnesses aside the

:06:00.:06:04.

News of the World. You're watching Reporting Scotland

:06:04.:06:10.

from the BBC. Still to come before 7pm:

:06:10.:06:13.

Dampening spirits - why music fans might be in for a lightening

:06:13.:06:23.
:06:23.:06:28.

Tonight's sport comes from castles to -- castle steward because it is

:06:28.:06:32.

day one of the Gulf. I will have news of a dramatic and successful

:06:32.:06:38.

day. And we were hear from Andy Murray ahead of another big event.

:06:38.:06:41.

Scottish chefs are being told that they could save millions of pounds

:06:41.:06:45.

a year if they put less food on our plates. Zero Waste Scotland, an

:06:45.:06:47.

organisation set up by the Scottish Government, says caterers,

:06:47.:06:52.

restaurants and hotels are throwing away 50,000 tonnes of food a year.

:06:52.:06:55.

The industry is being warned that three quarters of the waste they

:06:55.:07:05.

send to landfill could be recycled. Laura Bicker reports.

:07:05.:07:11.

Every scrap, every leaf, every stock is put to good use here.

:07:11.:07:17.

popping them into the vegetable stock Pops. Everything gets popped

:07:17.:07:25.

into that. Anything she cannot cook with it goes into compost. But she

:07:25.:07:28.

noticed that most of the restaurant's waste came from

:07:28.:07:32.

customers not finishing their food. We used to think that we will give

:07:32.:07:37.

them a big bet but more often than not they do not want to eat all

:07:38.:07:43.

that so we moved from a large vegetable balls to small ones and

:07:43.:07:49.

if we see there is ever -- if there is only a little bit left, then we

:07:49.:07:53.

offer them more effect than a protect all out at once and the

:07:53.:07:59.

waste have of it. Zero Waste Scotland tells us that the

:07:59.:08:05.

hospitality sector throws away 130,000 tonnes of waste a year. The

:08:05.:08:11.

say that one quarter of that could be recycled. The say if that was

:08:11.:08:18.

used properly, that would save 150,000 cubic tonnes of CO2. That

:08:18.:08:24.

is the equivalent of taking 50,000 cars off the road. This country is

:08:24.:08:33.

turning into a trend of having very large portions. Jacqueline

:08:33.:08:36.

remembers being shocked at the amount of waste when she first

:08:36.:08:40.

opened Tower restaurant. She hopes Scotland will follow her lead and

:08:40.:08:45.

stop filling the nation's landfill sites unnecessarily.

:08:45.:08:48.

Some of the other stories across Scotland this Thursday evening:

:08:48.:08:50.

Grampian Police have confirmed that a body recovered from a Banffshire

:08:51.:08:55.

shoreline earlier this week is that of the missing teenager Jake Miller.

:08:55.:08:58.

The 18-year-old from Turriff went missing two weeks ago when a boat

:08:58.:09:02.

capsized at night between Banff and Whitehills. His two friends managed

:09:02.:09:07.

to safely swim ashore. A police investigation is

:09:07.:09:11.

continuing after a man's body was discovered in a Fife alleyway. The

:09:11.:09:13.

body was found in a narrow lane leading from Dunfermline High

:09:13.:09:18.

Street at around quarter to seven this morning. Detectives say they

:09:18.:09:20.

are in the very early stages of their investigation and are

:09:20.:09:24.

currently treating the death as unexplained.

:09:24.:09:26.

Smaller construction firms in Scotland are continuing to struggle,

:09:26.:09:31.

according to an industry survey. The Federation of Master Builders

:09:31.:09:34.

found that business conditions in the past three months improved

:09:34.:09:37.

compared to the winter months, but many bosses say they expect to see

:09:37.:09:47.

orders declining and staff being It's an issue that angers

:09:47.:09:50.

pedestrians up and down the country - dog owners who fail to clean up

:09:50.:09:54.

after their hounds. But it appears that some councils are more strict

:09:54.:09:57.

than others when it comes to penalising offenders. Catriona

:09:57.:10:07.
:10:07.:10:07.

Renton reports. Need to seven- month-old Lexy. She is her owner's

:10:07.:10:15.

best friend. If you are a responsible dog-owner, you should

:10:15.:10:19.

pick up your dog's business because that is part of being a dog owner.

:10:19.:10:27.

People that do not, well, they should. This dog's owner feels just

:10:27.:10:30.

as strongly. It does not take a couple of minutes to bend down and

:10:30.:10:38.

put it in a bucket. There are buckets around the park. This might

:10:38.:10:43.

seem like a cheeky message, but the council is taking the issue of dog

:10:43.:10:47.

fouling very seriously. They have run a poster campaign and they have

:10:47.:10:52.

put controversial leaflets showing dog mess three people's doors. The

:10:52.:10:57.

result, a cleaner streets and complaints are down. Out in the

:10:57.:11:01.

streets in the north of Edinburgh, at this area was a hot spot for

:11:01.:11:05.

wardens. It is the thing that residents in the City complain most

:11:05.:11:12.

often about, so we take a hard line on it. If we catch someone then

:11:13.:11:17.

they have a fixed find that they have to pay within 20 days. If they

:11:17.:11:23.

do not pay that it rises to 60 and if they do not pay that then they

:11:23.:11:30.

get taken to the Procurator Fiscal. Over tea appeared, Edinburgh has

:11:30.:11:37.

issued 946 find and Glasgow 1530. Overwork a four-year period,

:11:37.:11:41.

Sterling issued to just 13 and Orkney handed out to none at all.

:11:41.:11:48.

So is there just no dog fouling in Orkney? We do have a steady flow of

:11:48.:11:55.

complaints that come into us and we investigate these as they come in,

:11:55.:12:03.

but the public here... Is there to say that if there is people around

:12:03.:12:07.

and you have got your dog out you pick up because there is peer

:12:07.:12:12.

pressure. This is a problem that the public want councils to keep on

:12:12.:12:17.

a tight leash. It was once one of Scotland's most

:12:17.:12:19.

appealing fishing beats, but it's claimed that anglers are now

:12:19.:12:22.

staying away from a section of the Upper Tay after it became what's

:12:22.:12:25.

described as a "highway" for commercial rafting. Salmon

:12:25.:12:28.

fishermen want the local authority to restrict access to the river

:12:28.:12:32.

three days a week. But the rafters argue that such a move would

:12:32.:12:41.

threaten the local jobs they provide. Steven Godden has more.

:12:41.:12:44.

Two very different past times competing for space on the same

:12:44.:12:51.

stretch of the Upper Tay. A battle that the salmon fishermen where it

:12:58.:13:02.

throw from his house was one of his fear it -- favourite fishing

:13:02.:13:07.

streets. The reason is commercial rafting which he says has turned

:13:07.:13:11.

the river into a highway. If you come here to fish, you will find

:13:11.:13:16.

that quite often there are a lot of laughs going through and she will

:13:16.:13:25.

not catch fish. The result is that people tend to stay away. Brisk

:13:25.:13:29.

business for the rafting companies reflects the upward trend in

:13:29.:13:34.

popularity, and while local guides have sympathy for fishermen, they

:13:34.:13:39.

do not always accept that boats are a nuisance. Do not get me wrong, or

:13:39.:13:44.

we do play around on the river. We do not do it in sensitive areas or

:13:44.:13:48.

fishing holes and if we can see a fisherman then all messing about

:13:48.:13:55.

stops. We will paddle past nice and quietly. Everyone agrees that

:13:55.:13:58.

fishing and ratting are not compatible and that one solution

:13:58.:14:03.

would be to split up the week. The problems arise in deciding how many

:14:03.:14:09.

days and exactly which ones to assigned to each activity. Anglers

:14:09.:14:15.

believe that setting aside ratafia days would encourage at revival but

:14:15.:14:19.

rafters argue it would threaten the local employment and so the dispute

:14:19.:14:24.

continues. Both are equally important to the airier and I do

:14:24.:14:27.

not think anyone wants to see the quality of the experience that

:14:27.:14:32.

people come to fresh are going to have because of other activities.

:14:32.:14:42.
:14:42.:14:46.

In we can do anything to help, or Of their optimistic a compromise

:14:46.:14:53.

can be reached but the conversation has been going on since 2005. It

:14:53.:14:57.

could be some time before there is harmony on the Upper Tay. A

:14:57.:15:01.

memorial book from the funeral of Lord Byron has been gifted to the

:15:01.:15:04.

National Library of Scotland. The 186 year-old volume is a one-off.

:15:04.:15:07.

It turned up at a church bring-and- buy sale in Georgia in the United

:15:08.:15:12.

States. The lady who found it has gifted it to be included in the

:15:12.:15:20.

Byron papers which are housed at the National Library. Let us go to

:15:20.:15:24.

Castle Stuart and joined David at the Scottish Open.

:15:24.:15:28.

Welcome back to the shores of the Moray Firth on day one of the

:15:28.:15:36.

Scottish Open. The son has been shining. On and off. Some of the

:15:36.:15:41.

world's top golfers have been making hay, none more so than Lee

:15:41.:15:46.

Westwood who has a share of the lead on seven under par. Alongside

:15:46.:15:51.

the Chilean golfer Mark Tullo. Not a bad day for Colin Montgomery

:15:51.:15:58.

either. He is up on the leaderboard with five under par for his opening

:15:58.:16:04.

round. Mark Warren is also on five under par, despite getting off to a

:16:04.:16:07.

horrendous start with a triple- bogey eight at the very first hole

:16:07.:16:14.

of his round. I managed to catch up with mark when he had finished his

:16:14.:16:19.

opening round. Congratulations, quite an eventful round. He had a

:16:19.:16:27.

triple bogey at the first. Obviously, a poor tee off the first.

:16:27.:16:34.

I need to practice. I took a bad drop. It was nice to hear few

:16:34.:16:40.

cheers today. That start meant an hour to put it to the back of my

:16:40.:16:46.

mind. It is a massive event - the Scottish Open. It is too early to

:16:46.:16:53.

get frustrated. I told myself I was hitting the ball well. Mia admit it

not remember one bad Pat so if I keep that up, I will be happy. --

:17:19.:17:24.

bad putt. Are you aiming to make the cut or do you think you can

:17:24.:17:29.

make an impression on the leader board? The way I am hitting the

:17:29.:17:37.

ball, t he shot as it comes, seven birdies and a role, I felt as if

:17:37.:17:41.

mentally I was really good. That is the focus, to stay aggressive on

:17:41.:17:48.

each swing and see what it takes me on Sunday. With seven birdies in a

:17:48.:17:52.

row, Mark Warren is clearly enjoying himself at Castle Stuart

:17:52.:17:58.

but what about the public? Craig Anderson has been out and about and

:17:58.:18:04.

mingling. With the change in the weather - it

:18:04.:18:09.

was set fair for a tremendous tournament. The water hazard is the

:18:09.:18:16.

are raising a glass. It is not often we get last -- golf

:18:28.:18:33.

they are and thank goodness the sun is shining. They have come to a

:18:33.:18:39.

beautiful golf course. I played it a month ago and I really enjoyed it.

:18:39.:18:44.

Colin Montgomery is desperate for a top-five finish. What are his

:18:45.:18:54.
:18:55.:18:59.

chances? Saloon, I think. I keep my fingers crossed. -- slim. He got

:18:59.:19:04.

the in in the end. I think he would do it in the end. I think he will

:19:04.:19:09.

keep us run going for the Open. With six of the top players in the

:19:09.:19:13.

world here, the crowds enjoying themselves, Castle Stuart has

:19:13.:19:17.

definitely hit it off on the international golf circuit.

:19:17.:19:23.

I told you it was sunny earlier. It is getting cloudy now but hopefully

:19:23.:19:29.

it will remain dry. One of Scotland's top referees says the

:19:29.:19:33.

SPL has to sort out the wage dispute before the start of the new

:19:33.:19:37.

season. Craig Thomson and his colleagues want an increase up to

:19:37.:19:43.

1,000 per match. The comments came on the day it was revealed that

:19:43.:19:49.

referees will start their training in the clash and. -- in the

:19:49.:19:55.

classroom. The job of Scottish referee could have come with a

:19:55.:19:59.

government health warning in the past. Waugh recently it has led to

:20:05.:20:12.

school to nurture new talent through a referee qualification.

:20:12.:20:18.

Tensions remain. The men in the middle want a wage rise of 200 a

:20:18.:20:25.

game. At the moment they get 800 and match - enough? As a referee

:20:25.:20:33.

and he will say no. It is no longer just A90 minute job. They argue

:20:33.:20:37.

that increased fitness levels and pressure should be reflected in the

:20:37.:20:43.

pay packets but the SPL are standing firm. I would imagine it

:20:43.:20:49.

will be resolved before the start of the season. I hope it is. When

:20:49.:20:54.

the focus returns to it ref again, they hope a rush to the classroom

Chinese side Shaanxi Chanba. Seen here scoring against former club

signed a two-year deal, significantly increasing his wages.

:21:20.:21:24.

Well done to him. Great Britain play Luxembourg in the Davis Cup

:21:24.:21:28.

tennis in Glasgow tomorrow. Andy Murray is one of two Scots in the

:21:28.:21:34.

Britain team. He says it has been refreshing to come home after his

:21:34.:21:39.

semi-final defeat in Wimbledon last week. It made a big difference,

:21:39.:21:45.

everyone has been so positive and upbeat. They are happy and I like

:21:45.:21:49.

that. It has made a big difference. I want to work hard and make sure

:21:49.:21:54.

that I play my best and put on a good performance.

:21:54.:21:59.

A big weekend of tennis to look forward to and also another three

:21:59.:22:05.

days of golf here at Castle Stuart. For now, back to you.

:22:05.:22:12.

Thank you very much. It must have been one of the most unusual rock

:22:12.:22:14.

gigs ever played in Scotland. It was certainly the quietest. No

:22:14.:22:16.

massive loudspeakers when indie band The View played to fans in a

:22:16.:22:18.

Dundee shopping centre car park. To avoid disturbing shoppers, the

:22:18.:22:20.

performance was relayed to headphones. The fans seem to enjoy

:22:20.:22:29.

it just the same. Wellies and waterproofs are likely

:22:29.:22:34.

to be out in force and the next few days as music fans head to T in the

:22:34.:22:40.

Park. Campers have begin -- cappers have begun arriving already. Heavy
