Welcome to Reporting Scotland. Tonight on your national news. Two

coastguard stations are saved, but two others will be shut down.

Campaigners in Shetland and Stornoway celebrate after the UK

government rethinks its plans to overhaul the service. But bases on

the Clyde and Forth will be closed by 2015. We're live in Gourock with

reaction. Also coming up tonight: The new surgical technique which

could spell the end for the stookie. It's the talk of the town. Find out

what's getting tongues wagging in the capital. And we'll have the

latest on how the Scots are faring as they tee off at the Open.

Coastguard stations in Shetland and Stornoway have been saved from

closure but stations on the Clyde and Forth are to close in line with

the original Government proposals. This is what Scotland's coastguard

cover looks like at the moment. Aberdeen was proposed to be kept as

the only 24 hour station. Now Shetland, Stornoway and Aberdeen

will be kept as 24 hour facilities. The new coastguard map of Scotland

will look like this. This man probably owes his lives -- his life

to the coastguard in Shetland. When his boat grounded on the rocks the

helicopter was quickly on the scene. Water was already covering the deck,

the crew had to hold on to stop them slipping into the sea. One by

one they were airlifted to safety. Became an save their lives. In a

controversial plans by the coalition Government to have

Aberdeen as Scotland's or only 24 hour station have been abandoned.

In the Scottish islands and between the islands and the Scottish

mainland we have decided to retain coastguard centres in boss

Stornoway and Shetland. It is a victory for campaigners from both

communities who jointly fought to keep them open. In Stornoway

islanders marched through the streets in protest. We are

delighted by these new proposals. This is what we campaigned for her.

While there are real celebrations here in the north of Scotland,

there is bitter disappointment in the south. Off Clyde Danforth

coastguard stations are to close. Clyde is Scotland's busiest rescue

centre. In future rescues there might be dealt with by coastguards

from across the Irish Sea in Belfast. Scotland has a unique

topography. Its islands and sea lochs makes communications

difficult. Local knowledge is paramount. For this Shetland

skipper it is a comfort to to know that local coastguards and local

knowledge will be there on call if he needs them again. So, a relief

are not pursuing charges against a woman who took her paralysed son to

Hundreds of mourners have attended the funeral of an Aberdeenshire

farmer who died in mysterious circumstances. 80-year-old Sandy

Ingram was found with serious head injuries just over a year ago. Two

intruders had been spotted in the grounds of his remote farmhouse.

Now his widow has appealed for them to come forward. Colin Wight

reports. Sandy Ingram was a popular former.

Many friends and family gathered at the parish church to celebrate his

life. This is he had spent the last year. And a hospital bed, unable to

talk or explain what had happened. He died last month. Police had been

called to his remote farmhouse on June 19th last year. He was found

with serious head injuries after going to investigate the siting of

two men in the grounds. Since he died, we would like to know what

happened. If anybody, these two people, could come forward and tell

us, it would be a big relief just to know what happened. Sandy

Ingram's White said her husband was a happy and jolly man who loved his

life. She had taken part in over 180 Highland Games. At this

afternoon Mrs Ingram said goodbye to her husband but not to the

thoughts that hot her daily. For it is very difficult, the thought that

he has suffered this last year. We hope to move on. It has been very

difficult this past year. We have to look to the future without him.

It is just hard. Hundreds have gathered here today to celebrate

the life of Sandy Ingram, but his death remains a mystery. Until

someone comes forward with an answer, it will be hard for his

family to find peace. An investigation is underway into a

gas leak at the St Fergus terminal near Peterhead. Workers were called

to muster this afternoon, and all non-essential personnel sent home

for the rest of the day. Fire fighters and police were called to

the plant but were stood down shortly after. Operators Total said

the section of the terminal affected by the leak was

immediately shut down and depressurised.

which mysteriously appeared in Edinburgh city centre overnight.

The public seem to like them, but as Gavin Walker reports, the local

council cannot seem to make its mind up whether to praise them or

Thomson, who has been told he will not play for the club again after

Jefferies says he is content that a line has been drawn under the

season. There was a bit of a Doctor Who

moment in Renfrew today, when the contents of a time capsule were

revealed. It had been hidden away nearly 140 years ago, and was only

discovered during a restoration project. It is hoped the contents

will give fresh insights into the area's history. Sally McNair has

more. 1872 saw the grand opening of

Renfrew town hall. Behind the stonework in the Clock Tower,

workmen head away at last a bell jar with treasures of the time. But

survived a fire and nearly one and half centuries -- 150 years, before

construction workers found it. was a great surprise. They are

A leading health charity has warned of a big jump in the number of

cancer patients. Macmillan Cancer Support says four in ten people in

the UK will get cancer at some stage in their lives.
