Welcome to Reporting Scotland. Tonight on your national news: | :00:15. | :00:18.
People who suffer just one single head injury are at greater risk of | :00:18. | :00:22.
developing dementia, according to Scottish scientists. | :00:22. | :00:25.
Thousands of energy customers face higher bills, as another company | :00:25. | :00:31.
announces a rise in prices. From the football pitch to the play | :00:31. | :00:39.
park. Is swearing so widespread we will just have to live with it? | :00:39. | :00:45.
one time, years ago, especially women and children, were more aware | :00:45. | :00:49.
that they should not swear. Whereas nowadays, it does not seem to | :00:49. | :00:54.
matter. Also coming up on tonight's | :00:54. | :00:56.
programme: We are live at Tannadice as Dundee | :00:56. | :00:58.
United prepare for the second leg of their Europa League qualifier. | :00:58. | :01:01.
Groundbreaking research by Scots scientists appears to show that | :01:01. | :01:04.
people who suffer even a single head injury, for example in a car | :01:04. | :01:07.
crash or a fall, are more likely to develop dementia later in life. It | :01:08. | :01:10.
is already known that people who have suffered repeated blows to the | :01:11. | :01:14.
head, such as boxers, are more likely to develop the symptoms. But | :01:14. | :01:16.
this is the first time scientists have found physical abnormalities | :01:16. | :01:20.
in the brains of people who have had just one serious blow. Our | :01:20. | :01:28.
health correspondent, Eleanor Bradford, reports. | :01:28. | :01:33.
Sharon was knocked over by a drunk driver as a teenager. The brain | :01:33. | :01:38.
injury has had long lasting effect. Particularly to her memory, which | :01:38. | :01:43.
makes it difficult for her to focus on the question. How has the | :01:43. | :01:53.
:01:53. | :01:53. | ||
accident affected your money? not know. I think I can remember a | :01:53. | :02:03.
lot of things before the injury. But then I compare myself sometimes, | :02:03. | :02:08.
which I am trying not to do now. I had been accepted for a course in | :02:09. | :02:15.
child health care, which will start in the end of August. This garden | :02:15. | :02:22.
is run by the charity momentum. 150,000 people suffer head injury | :02:22. | :02:29.
every year in the UK. Sometimes people listen because you look OK, | :02:29. | :02:39.
:02:39. | :02:40. | ||
you are rocket. On the surfaces it looks OK. But there is a lot more | :02:40. | :02:46.
going on. Now scientists at Glasgow's Southern General Hospital | :02:46. | :02:49.
think there might be a longer lasting side-effects. They studied | :02:49. | :02:53.
the brains of people who had had a boat to the head and found | :02:53. | :02:57.
abnormalities in the brain tissue of up one third of them, indicating | :02:57. | :03:03.
that they might be at better risk of dementia. What we found was that | :03:03. | :03:10.
the patients who had had a head injury had large numbers and | :03:10. | :03:14.
widespread abnormalities in the brain, or similar to what we would | :03:14. | :03:18.
see in older patients or, in particular, patients with | :03:18. | :03:23.
Alzheimer's and dementia. This is worrying for many people. But there | :03:23. | :03:28.
is some good news. If scientists know when damage begins, with -- | :03:28. | :03:34.
for example with a head injury, they can win more about it. -- | :03:34. | :03:39.
learn more about it. And that can lead to new treatment. | :03:39. | :03:41.
Hundreds of thousands of energy customers have been warned to | :03:41. | :03:47.
expect big increases in their bills. Scottish and Southern Energy, whose | :03:47. | :03:49.
Scottish customer base is predominantly in the North, blames | :03:49. | :03:52.
political unrest in the Middle East and demand in Asia for the hikes in | :03:52. | :03:58.
both gas and electricity. Laura Bicker joins me now with more. So, | :03:58. | :04:04.
how bad is it for the customers? There does not seem to be much it | :04:04. | :04:08.
escaping it. Today, Scottish and Southern Energy say they are | :04:09. | :04:13.
increasing their prices. If you are one of the one million customers in | :04:13. | :04:19.
this country, this is what you can expect. Electricity up by 11%, gas | :04:19. | :04:28.
up by 18%. If you receive pure Bel, your last you may have been 1,094, | :04:28. | :04:36.
this here it will go up to tooth at -- 1,265. That will come in by | :04:36. | :04:43.
14th September. Competition was supposed to be | :04:43. | :04:48.
keeping prices down. But that does not appear to be working. | :04:48. | :04:51.
People are being urged to switch suppliers if there is a problem. | :04:52. | :04:55.
But if you switch suppliers and the increase their prices, you are not | :04:55. | :05:05.
:05:05. | :05:05. | ||
better off. Their calls for the Competition Commission to do an | :05:05. | :05:09.
investigation if it increases are not found to be fair. John Sweeney | :05:09. | :05:12.
says he will be meeting with representatives from Scottish and | :05:12. | :05:17.
Southern Energy. As for the company themselves, they have apologised. | :05:17. | :05:20.
They say the money it they are paying for wholesale gas and | :05:20. | :05:24.
electricity has gone up and that is where consumers are having to pay | :05:24. | :05:29.
more. They say they are having to invest in green energy projects to | :05:29. | :05:33.
meet government targets on emissions. If you are consider, | :05:33. | :05:37.
what does it been? You can shop around for a better deal. As we | :05:37. | :05:42.
have reported, Scottish and Southern Energy are not the first | :05:42. | :05:46.
to put up the prices and they are unlikely to be the last. | :05:46. | :05:49.
It is not only energy bills that are burning a hole in our pockets, | :05:49. | :05:55.
it seems. A survey of shoppers shows the vast majority are worried | :05:55. | :05:58.
about the rising cost of food, including fruit and vegetables. It | :05:58. | :06:01.
comes just as the big supermarkets have agreed to change their | :06:01. | :06:03.
marketing of fresh produce to help tackle Scotland's obesity problem. | :06:03. | :06:11.
Gavin Walker reports. Nature's pantry is, we're told, | :06:11. | :06:14.
literally the food of life. Scottish tours are said to give us | :06:14. | :06:17.
more of them. Eight major retailers have signed a commitment to help | :06:17. | :06:23.
more customers eat the recommended five portions a day. The survey | :06:23. | :06:27.
found that one-third of people in Britain have already reduced their | :06:27. | :06:31.
gross we spend this year. A further three in 10 are planning the cut. | :06:31. | :06:34.
Some of things retailers will be doing is increasing the proportion | :06:34. | :06:39.
of fruit and vegetable ingredients and other products, things like | :06:39. | :06:42.
ready meals and smoothies. They will be making sure that vegetables | :06:42. | :06:47.
are more convenient. They will make it easier for other family to have | :06:47. | :06:51.
a portion of vegetables in their meal. A report today by a consumer | :06:51. | :06:59.
watchdog says that taking a bit out of those can mean a bigger bite it | :06:59. | :07:05.
of that. People in Britain have increased their spending share and | :07:05. | :07:10.
a further three in 10 planted. were concerned that the price of | :07:10. | :07:20.
food had come up. The Dublin used put pressure on Scottish consumers. | :07:20. | :07:26.
We have, on average, had died on -- low on fruit and veg. Shoppers say | :07:27. | :07:30.
that they want to eat more of them that financial pressures mean they | :07:30. | :07:34.
cannot. Others say that that is just an excuse. It has definitely | :07:34. | :07:38.
gone up. You can see a difference when you going to buy something | :07:38. | :07:41.
that you have bought for a number of years and it has shot up in | :07:41. | :07:47.
price. The price definitely does affect it. And the quality, you | :07:47. | :07:49.
would rather go somewhere that might be cheaper, but the quality | :07:49. | :07:55.
will not be as good. The commitment to include more fruit -- fruit and | :07:55. | :07:59.
veg in products has been welcomed by the government. It is generally | :07:59. | :08:04.
thought to be a good thing, but with prices rising, the pressure to | :08:04. | :08:13.
eat well must overcome the pressure to make ends meet. | :08:13. | :08:16.
You're watching Reporting Scotland from the BBC. Still to come before | :08:16. | :08:18.
7pm: We're live in Shetland as the tall | :08:18. | :08:19.
ships arrive and the celebrations begin. | :08:19. | :08:23.
In sport, we will be live at Pittodrie as Dundee United bid for | :08:23. | :08:27.
Europa League survival. A big money signing could be close for Rangers. | :08:27. | :08:30.
And it is almost one year to go until the opening ceremony of the | :08:30. | :08:39.
London Olympic Games. Will it look like this? Or might we hear the | :08:39. | :08:42.
skirl of the pipes? All the sport, coming soon. | :08:42. | :08:46.
If the rotten weather is not enough to put you off a swim in the sea, | :08:46. | :08:50.
then perhaps taking a dip in a jellyfish soup will do the trick. | :08:50. | :08:53.
Scientists are warning that our coasts is being invaded by the | :08:53. | :08:55.
creatures, which have already caused the closure of Scotland's | :08:55. | :09:01.
biggest power station. Steven Godden reports. | :09:01. | :09:06.
That is not many that would cross- court or jellyfish but that is | :09:06. | :09:14.
exactly what this man has done. -- cross continents. They are the | :09:14. | :09:19.
focus of his PhD studies and the summer there are no lack of | :09:19. | :09:24.
subjects for his research. It seems like that when we have cold winters | :09:24. | :09:29.
in the UK, you see more jelly fish. The last year was a cold winter and | :09:29. | :09:34.
the year before that. It seems to be the trend here. Most of the | :09:34. | :09:39.
species found in Scottish Water song we have a mild Sting. That is | :09:39. | :09:42.
not what concerned these fishermen. For them, the surge in jellyfish | :09:42. | :09:47.
numbers, means it's more difficult to earn a living. The get amongst | :09:47. | :09:52.
the deer. The get in amongst the cooling system of the engine. The | :09:52. | :09:56.
Ara general nuisance. Be tried to avoid them, but that it's | :09:56. | :10:01.
impossible. Three weeks ago, they were really fact. A fact that | :10:01. | :10:07.
received international attention just been the cause. Last month the | :10:07. | :10:12.
operators of the nuclear power station here found the enormous | :10:12. | :10:16.
problems a jellyfish could call, when it because the shutdown of | :10:16. | :10:21.
water reactors. We feel the rise in jellyfish numbers is a warning to | :10:21. | :10:26.
us to start managing or seize properly. It is not every year. We | :10:26. | :10:36.
:10:36. | :10:38. | ||
do not have to surrender her sees to the jellyfish. -- hour sees. | :10:38. | :10:43.
People are being asked to report jellyfish sightings as experts | :10:43. | :10:45.
attempt to gain a bigger understanding of these floating | :10:45. | :10:48.
enigmas. Some of the other stories across | :10:48. | :10:52.
Scotland this Thursday: The family of a boy who died in a | :10:52. | :10:55.
road accident outside an East Lothian holiday park have paid | :10:55. | :10:57.
tribute to their "precious little boy". 6-year-old Liam McDonald died | :10:57. | :11:00.
when he was struck by a car outside Seton Sands holiday village on | :11:00. | :11:04.
Tuesday. Liam had been staying at the park with his family, who were | :11:04. | :11:09.
on holiday from Glasgow. Police say they are concerned for a | :11:09. | :11:16.
missing woman from Ayr. Samantha Parker, who is 35, hasn't been seen | :11:16. | :11:19.
since last Friday afternoon. Police are urging anyone who may have seen | :11:19. | :11:27.
her to come forward. And a woman has appeared in Elgin | :11:27. | :11:30.
Sheriff Court, charged with wasting police time following claims that a | :11:30. | :11:33.
syringe was found in baby food from a supermarket. Kelley Donald, who | :11:33. | :11:37.
is 33, was bailed. She had said she found the syringe in a jar bought | :11:37. | :11:41.
at an Asda store in Elgin in May. Last night on Reporting Scotland, | :11:41. | :11:44.
we reported on the case of Michael Bailey, a 20-year-old man from | :11:44. | :11:47.
Glasgow, who was convicted of posting sectarian and racist | :11:47. | :11:51.
comments on Facebook sites. Unfortunately, the picture we | :11:51. | :11:55.
showed was of another Michael Bailey. We are very sorry for this | :11:55. | :11:58.
and would like to apologise to Mr Bailey and his family for any hurt | :11:59. | :12:04.
and embarrassment this has caused. An amateur football team in the | :12:04. | :12:07.
Borders is trying to stamp out swearing among players and | :12:07. | :12:12.
spectators. But is it all too late? Is the use of the F word now so | :12:12. | :12:14.
widespread in general conversation, never mind football grounds, that | :12:14. | :12:17.
those who find it offensive will just have to learn to live with it? | :12:17. | :12:26.
Aileen Clarke has been investigating. | :12:26. | :12:31.
He is a role model with his feet, but not so much with his language. | :12:31. | :12:35.
The kind of tirade that all footballers would do well to avoid | :12:35. | :12:40.
this season. The language on and off the pitch can be fairly fierce, | :12:40. | :12:44.
but you do not have to be near a football match these days to here | :12:44. | :12:54.
:12:54. | :13:03. | ||
conversation crammed full with Child who should be more about | :13:04. | :13:08.
swing parks than swear words but protecting children from bad | :13:08. | :13:13.
language is getting more difficult. It used to be that especially in | :13:13. | :13:17.
front of women and children people would not swear but nowadays it | :13:17. | :13:24.
does not seem to matter. It is as if they do not realise they are | :13:24. | :13:31.
doing it. Sometimes when the hour mucking about with one another it | :13:31. | :13:37.
is said aggressively. That is what bothers me. Often it seems there is | :13:37. | :13:44.
a lack of awareness about who might hear that foul mouth aggression. | :13:44. | :13:49.
a society we tend to say to ourselves and others it is my | :13:49. | :13:54.
business if I want to swear and I'm well, it is nothing to do with you. | :13:54. | :14:01.
If you do not like it, go away and do not listen. Should you choose to | :14:01. | :14:11.
:14:11. | :14:14. | ||
listen however you may hear something like this. BE BE this | :14:14. | :14:20.
group say they do not mean any harm. I do not realise I am doing it at | :14:20. | :14:25.
the end of the day. You can swear as much as you want. What would | :14:25. | :14:29.
make you stop and think before swearing? If there were little kids | :14:29. | :14:38.
about. Inside the plea park the emphasis was on speed and certainly | :14:38. | :14:48.
:14:48. | :14:50. | ||
not swathing. -- swearing. Four days of celebrations are under way | :14:50. | :14:53.
in Shetland as the 56 strong fleet of tall ships arrive from Greenock. | :14:53. | :14:55.
They've been setting a leisurely pace, cruising around Scotland as | :14:55. | :14:58.
they take time out between two stages of their race from south- | :14:58. | :15:06.
western Ireland to western Norway. Our reporter is in Lerwick. As they | :15:06. | :15:10.
arrived they were celebrating with eight days of sometimes rough seas | :15:10. | :15:16.
behind them. When we got here this morning it was calm so it was not | :15:17. | :15:23.
bad. Majestically, the large and small ships have been sailing into | :15:23. | :15:30.
Lerwick harbour. They have four days of Sir -- celebrations ahead. | :15:30. | :15:37.
It is the end of a 500 mile journey from Greenock. People are expecting | :15:37. | :15:45.
something special from the people of Shetland. Good weather, good | :15:45. | :15:53.
times and a good rest. Crowds were lining the street to see D'Cruz | :15:53. | :16:01.
parading through town. Musical performances and more are planned | :16:01. | :16:08.
for over the weekend so the crowds and expected to get even bigger. | :16:08. | :16:13.
Many families have been down just to see the ships arrive even before | :16:13. | :16:20.
the celebrations get going. There are fond memories of the last visit. | :16:20. | :16:25.
In 1999 it was absolutely fantastic. Hopefully the weather will hold off | :16:25. | :16:32.
and it will be good. For the trainees everything has to be | :16:32. | :16:37.
shipshape with many visitors expected from the mainland for a | :16:37. | :16:44.
week of celebrations. There have been additional ceilings and | :16:44. | :16:50.
flights put on for the weekend. Most if not all of our | :16:50. | :17:00.
:17:00. | :17:13. | ||
accommodation providers are fully booked. -- ceilings -- sailings. | :17:14. | :17:19.
The next leg of the journey takes them across the North Sea to Norway. | :17:19. | :17:22.
The first big match on Scottish soil of the new season kicks off in | :17:22. | :17:25.
around one hour from now. Dundee United are hoping to keep their | :17:25. | :17:35.
:17:35. | :17:36. | ||
Europa League dreams alive in their second leg against Slask Wroclaw. I | :17:36. | :17:43.
am here with the Dundee United court. You played against Slask | :17:43. | :17:51.
Wroclaw 21 years ago and beat them 7-2 that time, it might be tighter | :17:51. | :17:58.
tonight? Yes, last week we equip ourselves really well and were very | :17:58. | :18:08.
:18:08. | :18:12. | ||
disappointed to lose 2-0. Tonight we have experienced players who | :18:12. | :18:16.
have a bit of height. If you get the ball in the box then we could | :18:16. | :18:26.
cause them a few problems. You will be positive tonight I expect? | :18:26. | :18:31.
have got to make sure we play with our heads as well as our Hearts. We | :18:32. | :18:39.
have got to make sure we keep it tight at the back. Do you expect | :18:39. | :18:45.
your team to go through tonight? You can hear the fans in the | :18:45. | :18:50.
background, we have still got an hour to go. Hopefully it will be | :18:50. | :18:55.
our night. I can tell you this game is live on BBC Radio Scotland | :18:55. | :19:05.
tonight. A great atmosphere is building up here tonight. Back to | :19:05. | :19:12.
the studio. Rangers have agreed to sign American midfielder Alejandro | :19:12. | :19:15.
Bedoya subject to a work permit. Meanwhile, the club are holding | :19:15. | :19:17.
talks with Hearts defender Lee Wallace after agreeing a fee of | :19:17. | :19:21.
1.5 million. Wallace is in the final year of his contract at | :19:21. | :19:24.
Tynecastle. English Premier League club Wolves are also interested in | :19:24. | :19:27.
signing the player but it's understood they wanted to wait | :19:27. | :19:32.
until January before making their move. There's a new man between the | :19:32. | :19:35.
posts at Pittodrie. Aberdeen have signed the Welsh international | :19:35. | :19:39.
goalkeeper Jason Brown. The 29 year-old joins from Blackburn and | :19:39. | :19:44.
is keen to make a big impression at Aberdeen. He admits he failed to | :19:44. | :19:54.
:19:54. | :20:01. | ||
shine at Ewood alongside some illustrious goalkeeping company. | :20:01. | :20:07.
The Neen keeper was a freak of nature because of his consistency. | :20:07. | :20:13.
I am honoured to be here. I want to thank the gaffer by bringing me in | :20:13. | :20:19.
and the way I am going to do that is by performing. One of Scotland's | :20:19. | :20:22.
top QCs has told BBC Scotland that his war with the SFA is over. Paul | :20:22. | :20:25.
McBride challenged the governing body last year when representing | :20:25. | :20:28.
the Celtic boss Neil Lennon. In the last part of his look at lessons | :20:28. | :20:30.
from last season, our senior football reporter, Chris McLaughlan, | :20:30. | :20:40.
:20:40. | :20:46. | ||
looks at how new rules have led to a new relationship. All of us aware | :20:46. | :20:50.
of the dangers to the game if we allow you the events of last season | :20:50. | :20:57.
to be repeated. That would be a disaster for our national game. | :20:58. | :21:03.
is very important we get the judicial system in place. The rule | :21:03. | :21:08.
book has been ripped up. Today, at the National Stadium, the man who | :21:08. | :21:16.
wrote it was informing the clubs of venue need. Last year there was a | :21:16. | :21:26.
:21:26. | :21:26. | ||
war of words with Celtic and be challenged the manager's ban. Until | :21:26. | :21:31.
recently this place has been warm to seven s FA disciplinary | :21:31. | :21:37.
committees. They have now been disbanded in favour of one. The SFA | :21:37. | :21:43.
says it will be faster, more transparent and more accountable. | :21:43. | :21:48.
We have taken advice from Scotland and England, looking at the legal | :21:48. | :21:52.
advisers who put the judicial system in to the Football | :21:52. | :21:59.
Association. I am confident we have done what we can. Legal advice | :21:59. | :22:04.
would have been handy last year when a top QC representing Neil | :22:04. | :22:09.
Lennon accused the SFA of being biased and dysfunctional. I could | :22:09. | :22:15.
have chosen my words more carefully. The SFA, in their reactions, could | :22:15. | :22:19.
have done the same. We have made absolute peace and I think we are | :22:20. | :22:26.
trying to work towards the same aim. Let's just talk about football this | :22:26. | :22:34.
here. So, lessons from last season? It appears to be focused on | :22:34. | :22:38.
football. 27th July will mark one year to go to the opening ceremony | :22:38. | :22:41.
of the London 2012 Olympic Games. Anticipation is growing in | :22:41. | :22:44.
Britain's capital city, but what do Games' organisers have in store for | :22:44. | :22:47.
Scots and the rest of the country? The images portrayed by 2012 | :22:47. | :22:50.
organisers at the Beijing handover were iconic of London. But will | :22:50. | :22:52.
next year's opening ceremony have relevance to people living | :22:52. | :23:02.
:23:02. | :23:08. | ||
elsewhere in the UK? We we laugh at British Field. I wonder if we might | :23:08. | :23:14.
have liked to do things from outside the ground. What about the | :23:14. | :23:19.
lone piper on the battlements of Edinburgh Castle? That kind of | :23:19. | :23:25.
image would be seen to be both Scottish and British. And for more | :23:25. | :23:29.
on the Games build up, you can join me and the Sport Nation team for an | :23:29. | :23:32.
Olympic special on Saturday morning at nine on BBC Radio Scotland. | :23:32. | :23:34.
Before the weather a reminder that our money expert Fergus Muirhead | :23:34. | :23:39.
will be here on Wednesday. He'll be dealing with any consumer queries | :23:39. | :23:42.
and problems you may be having with poor service or goods that don't | :23:42. | :23:52.
:23:52. | :23:55. | ||
work. The address is [email protected]. The weekend is | :23:55. | :24:02.
approaching, how is the weather looking? It is looking good for now. | :24:02. | :24:07.
It was a day of sunshine, showers and cloud across many parts of the | :24:07. | :24:12.
country. Quite a blanket of cloud across Scotland, starting to break | :24:12. | :24:17.
up in the afternoon and producing showers in the central belt and | :24:17. | :24:22.
further north. Tonight will be mainly dry and cool but some | :24:22. | :24:28.
showers will continue in parts of Scotland. For most of us it will be | :24:28. | :24:38.
:24:38. | :24:41. | ||
Into tomorrow, another day of sunshine and showers. There will be | :24:41. | :24:46.
more or widespread sunshine than resort today. The showers will be | :24:46. | :24:56.
:24:56. | :24:58. | ||
light and widespread. Showers continued to be light further north | :24:58. | :25:06.
but temperatures are not so good despite the sunshine. Tomorrow | :25:06. | :25:11.
evening the showers will started to move away. We hold on to the | :25:11. | :25:17.
sunshine for an nice end to the day. The weekend looks mostly dry, | :25:17. | :25:25.
bright and settled. The winds could be touching gale-force across parts | :25:25. | :25:31.
of the Northern Isles. They will be strong down the east coast. This is | :25:31. | :25:37.
due to a low pressure over Scandinavia. At the moment, high | :25:37. | :25:47.
:25:47. | :25:47. | ||
pressure in the middle is keeping it at be. Dry, fine and settled | :25:47. | :25:55.
conditions for the weekend. Killer and cloudier further east. You can | :25:55. | :26:02.
keep up-to-date with the weekend forecast on twitter. That's all for | :26:02. | :26:10.
forecast on twitter. That's all for now. Now a summary of the top | :26:10. | :26:16.
stories. People who suffer a single head injury are more likely to | :26:16. | :26:22.
develop dementia in later life. It is the first time scientists have | :26:22. | :26:26.
found changes in brain chemistry of people are who have suffered just | :26:26. | :26:35.
one brain injury instead of more trouble. The total number of people | :26:35. | :26:40.
who have died in a murder inquiry at a Manchester hospital has risen | :26:40. | :26:49.
to five. And nurse is being questioned on suspicion of murder. | :26:49. | :26:59.

Insulin was injected into saline drips. Power companies are raising | :27:00. | :27:08.
gas and electricity prices. Prince Andrew is to step down from his | :27:08. | :27:11.
