Welcome to Thursday's Reporting Scotland. Tonight: Rangers - the | :00:17. | :00:20.
Inside story. How the club's owner Craig Whyte made his fortune, how | :00:20. | :00:23.
he bought Rangers for a pound and how he faced down boardroom | :00:23. | :00:32.
opposition. Maybe he was not going to have the | :00:32. | :00:38.
money to pay her bills. Did you not ask Sir David Murray not to do this | :00:38. | :00:44.
still -- deal? I asked him not to, he said it was too late. A BBC | :00:44. | :00:46.
Scotland investigation uncovers evidence of alleged criminality in | :00:46. | :00:54.
Mr White's past business dealings. Something he vehemently denies. | :00:54. | :00:58.
Also tonight: as 1,000 jobs head to his Highland charge, the first | :00:58. | :01:01.
minister tells SNP conference, it is time to take control of | :01:01. | :01:03.
Scotland's energy resources. We hear from the men with breast | :01:03. | :01:07.
cancer who say the NHS forgets that it is not only women who get the | :01:07. | :01:11.
disease. And worth getting up for. The dawn | :01:11. | :01:18.
flight of pink-footed geese the Montrose Basin. | :01:18. | :01:20.
A BBC Scotland investigation has uncovered evidence of alleged | :01:20. | :01:23.
criminality in the past business dealings of the new owner of | :01:23. | :01:27.
Rangers. It reveals that Craig Whyte was banned from being a | :01:27. | :01:35.
director for seven years until 2007. The programme features claims he | :01:35. | :01:38.
illegally controlled a company, for which he could have been sent to | :01:38. | :01:41.
prison for two years. Mr Whyte denies that he committed any | :01:41. | :01:46.
offences. This comes just two days after the club severed all ties | :01:46. | :01:49.
with the BBC. Our investigations correspondent Mark Daly has this | :01:49. | :01:57.
exclusive report. In May this here in the new owner of Rangers walked | :01:57. | :02:02.
into Ibrox to our hero's welcome. Craig Whyte pledged funds and a | :02:02. | :02:10.
bright future but just six months future, the club's faces insolvency. | :02:10. | :02:18.
Kray work was a millionaire by his late 20s. -- Craig Whyte. But he | :02:18. | :02:23.
left Scotland and moved to Monaco, the ultimate playground of the rich. | :02:23. | :02:28.
In May 2000, not long after the collapse of his business empire | :02:28. | :02:34.
under a flurry of debts, he gave an interview here in Monaco. He told a | :02:34. | :02:39.
journalist that he did not all anyone any money, least of all the | :02:39. | :02:43.
taxman and that he had a clear conscience with nothing to hide. | :02:43. | :02:49.
Five weeks after the interview, we can reveal that Craig Whyte was | :02:49. | :02:52.
disqualified under company lob and banned from being a director for | :02:52. | :02:57.
seven years. It appears that despite being at disqualified | :02:57. | :03:03.
director, he kept himself very busy indeed. This document reveals | :03:03. | :03:07.
startling allegations about the covert business activities of Mr | :03:07. | :03:12.
White which could have seen him go to prison for up to two years. The | :03:12. | :03:18.
UK's investigations unit into go up business practices wind up a | :03:18. | :03:21.
company they believe is being run by Mr Whyte while he was being | :03:21. | :03:28.
disqualified, a criminal defence -- offence. All the signals where that | :03:28. | :03:32.
the financial management of the company were being exercised by Mr | :03:32. | :03:38.
White. He could have been sent to prison for this? Yes, there would | :03:38. | :03:42.
have to have been a criminal investigation and trial. Mr White | :03:42. | :03:47.
says he was a small investor in the company but had no financial | :03:47. | :03:52.
control. He denies committing a criminal offence. He returned to | :03:52. | :04:00.
Scotland, bought a castle and three years later,. Rangers. In financial | :04:00. | :04:06.
turmoil with a potential 57 million pound tax bill, it cost him at | :04:06. | :04:10.
talking one count. He clear the bank loan and agreed to take on the | :04:10. | :04:14.
tax liability. The previous chairman had concerns about the | :04:14. | :04:19.
security of the club. That was a big concern to us that maybe he was | :04:19. | :04:25.
not going to have the money to pay our bills. Did she not ask Sir | :04:25. | :04:30.
David Murray not to do this deal? asked him not to, he said it was | :04:30. | :04:38.
too late. All but one of the original board have left. | :04:38. | :04:42.
Administration is a distinct possibility. Mr White would be | :04:42. | :04:48.
first in line to be paid with the others being left empty handed. The | :04:48. | :04:51.
BBC first contacted Mr Whyte five weeks ago to ask him for an | :04:51. | :04:56.
interview, and several times since, he has refused but told the BBC he | :04:56. | :05:00.
was committed to the future of the club. Rangers are seven points | :05:00. | :05:05.
clear at the top of the Scottish Premier League, but boardroom | :05:05. | :05:07.
unrest and the threat of administration casts a long shadow | :05:07. | :05:14.
of a Ibrox. The BBC investigation raises serious questions about the | :05:14. | :05:20.
past have Craig Whyte and his role as the honour and Guardian, tens of | :05:20. | :05:24.
thousands of Rangers fans may be watching what happens in the future | :05:24. | :05:29.
as being the most important. Craig Whyte has withdrawn all | :05:29. | :05:33.
cooperation from the BBC but he has spoken to other media outlets today. | :05:33. | :05:40.
This is what he had to say. track record speaks for itself. I'm | :05:40. | :05:45.
here and I had done a lot more successful deals that -- than deals | :05:45. | :05:51.
that haven't worked out. That speaks for itself. You can see more | :05:51. | :05:55.
of that investigation straight after it this programme at 7pm on | :05:55. | :06:00.
BBC One Scotland. The SNP's annual conference | :06:00. | :06:02.
underway this afternoon with the First Minister telling delegates | :06:02. | :06:04.
that Scotland should take control of its energy resources. Alex | :06:04. | :06:06.
Salmond vowed to fight for what he called world-leading carbon capture | :06:06. | :06:08.
technology, after the UK Government abandoned plans to set up such a | :06:08. | :06:18.
scheme at Longannet in Fife. FROM Inverness, here is our | :06:18. | :06:25.
political correspondent. They once built oil platforms here. This was | :06:25. | :06:30.
the largest dry dock in Europe. For a decade and more there has been | :06:30. | :06:36.
next to no industry here. Today Alex Salmond came here to meet the | :06:36. | :06:40.
new owner of the guards who hope to create 2000 jobs on the Cromarty | :06:40. | :06:48.
Firth, servicing a oil, gas and renewable industries. It comes a | :06:48. | :06:52.
week after BP confirmed a new investment West after -- West from | :06:52. | :06:57.
Sheffield we should keep jobs going for decades to come. Alex Salmond | :06:57. | :07:01.
said it is time for Holyrood to take control of all Scotland's | :07:01. | :07:07.
energy resources. It is and were at -- imperative regain control of it. | :07:07. | :07:12.
There is one competitive which matters above all, because it is | :07:13. | :07:18.
simply unacceptable to have a fuel poverty amid that energy plenty. | :07:19. | :07:27.
Simply unacceptable. Mr Salmond also criticised the failure of a | :07:27. | :07:31.
project to turn Longannet into a pioneering carbon capture and | :07:31. | :07:35.
storage facility, accusing the UK Government of turning its back on | :07:35. | :07:42.
Scotland. Energy has long played an iconic part in SNP politics. In the | :07:42. | :07:48.
1970s, the party said, it is Scotland's Coyle. Judaic Alex | :07:48. | :07:53.
Salmond hopes of oil, gas and renewables can help power his | :07:53. | :07:58.
party's campaign to make Scotland an independent country. | :07:58. | :08:03.
The SNP is the first majority government at Holyrood and has | :08:03. | :08:08.
never known greater electoral success. His challenge now is to | :08:08. | :08:13.
convert support for the party into a yes vote for independence in the | :08:13. | :08:19.
referendum to be held in Three or four years time. | :08:19. | :08:22.
Tonight of course the Scottish government has been digesting the | :08:22. | :08:26.
news that Colonel Gadaffi has been killed in Libya. The government had | :08:26. | :08:29.
been hoping that if he were captured alive, he might have shed | :08:29. | :08:34.
some light on the Lockerbie bombing and his role in it. Tonight the | :08:34. | :08:37.
First Minister said the Scottish investigation into the atrocity | :08:37. | :08:43.
would continue. We are already in contact with the new government. We | :08:43. | :08:47.
had been assured of cooperation. Understandably, we have had many | :08:47. | :08:54.
other things to focus on. -- they have had. If evidence emerges, it | :08:54. | :08:59.
will be properly examined to see if it is substantial. A substantial, | :08:59. | :09:04.
the Crown Office will make the appropriate decisions. I'm joined | :09:04. | :09:08.
by our political editor. Is seen as nothing has changed with the death | :09:08. | :09:15.
of Colonel Gadaffi? -- it seems. is emphasising that first of all, | :09:15. | :09:19.
he believes the world will rejoice in the downfall of what he calls a | :09:19. | :09:24.
tyranny in Libya and secondly, the issue of Abdel Basset al Megrahi | :09:24. | :09:31.
has been hugely sensitive for the Scottish government. Alex Salmond | :09:31. | :09:35.
distressing to things, that it was taken within the context of Scots | :09:35. | :09:40.
law and secondly, Scots law tempered by nursing. On the | :09:40. | :09:48.
conference itself, what has the end -- what is atmosphere been like? | :09:48. | :09:53.
is euphoric. They are the first majority government. It is the 77th | :09:53. | :09:59.
SNP conference and they are in power but there is euphoria. It is | :09:59. | :10:03.
contained because they did not enter politics to gain it | :10:03. | :10:08.
devolution but independence. Alex Salmond knows he is bidding at off | :10:08. | :10:13.
for her to a T years, because he pledged that through their election | :10:13. | :10:17.
campaign and also he believes privately is -- it is not the time | :10:17. | :10:22.
to advance the cause of independence when the economy is in | :10:22. | :10:27.
trouble. His view is seek popularity first as the Government | :10:27. | :10:32.
by working with the flow of popular concerns and then put the issue of | :10:32. | :10:37.
independence to the people of Scotland. Thank you for that. | :10:37. | :10:46.
Still to come before seven: The Burns poem etched on glass by the | :10:47. | :10:51.
Bard himself. In sport we will bring you the | :10:51. | :10:56.
latest from Celtic's Europa League match against Rennes. | :10:56. | :11:01.
And two was to play for a teenager he be - the scorer of this goal | :11:01. | :11:04.
does but a former Scotland boss reckons it could be the end of our | :11:04. | :11:09.
national team. It was a long-distance walk that | :11:09. | :11:14.
was meant to raise awareness of the plight of murder victims families. | :11:14. | :11:23.
Peter Morris's sister was murdered by her has been so but his walk | :11:23. | :11:27.
ended with the amputation of part of his leg but he told us he had no | :11:27. | :11:33.
regret. Peter Morris is recovering in hospital near his home in Kent. | :11:33. | :11:38.
His right leg was amputated below the knee last night. He has | :11:38. | :11:43.
diabetes and gangrene had set in after he developed blisters during | :11:43. | :11:47.
his walk to campaign for justice. Doctors had warned him that the | :11:47. | :11:53.
long trek could cause permanent injury. I have no regrets. | :11:53. | :11:57.
Obviously I would like to have two legs but I cannot help that. I have | :11:57. | :12:02.
ended up in this situation and if I had to do it again, I would do it | :12:02. | :12:06.
again because I want to try and achieve things for other people in | :12:06. | :12:11.
the future. Peter Morris and his supporters set of seven weeks ago | :12:11. | :12:16.
from the grave of his sister, heading to the Scottish Parliament | :12:16. | :12:20.
in Edinburgh. Claire Morris was married to Malcolm Webster who was | :12:20. | :12:24.
jailed for 30 years earlier this year for murdering her in a staged | :12:24. | :12:29.
car crash in Aberdeenshire in 1994. He had also tried to murder his | :12:29. | :12:35.
second wife in New Zealand. Peter Morris handed in a petition to the | :12:35. | :12:38.
Scottish Parliament, seeking better rights for victims and their | :12:38. | :12:44.
families. This campaign has cost him his leg. I am not writing off a | :12:44. | :12:49.
were going back to Edinburgh again, or making speeches in the | :12:49. | :12:53.
parliament. Or even hoping that their English parliament follows | :12:53. | :12:56.
the Scottish Parliament on this subject. I think the policies we | :12:56. | :13:01.
are trying to put in place could become UK weight, and I think that | :13:01. | :13:07.
is a big goal to have and I intend to get there. Despite the setback, | :13:07. | :13:12.
Peter is continuing his campaign from hospital and says he will not | :13:12. | :13:20.
rest until he gets justice for the memory of clear and other victims. | :13:20. | :13:24.
Some of the other stories across Scotland this Thursday... | :13:24. | :13:28.
A fresh appeal has been launched in the hunt for two Scots thought to | :13:28. | :13:30.
be on the run in Spain. Crimestoppers have asked for help | :13:31. | :13:34.
in their hunt for William Paterson, who is wanted over the murder of | :13:34. | :13:36.
Kevin Carroll in Robroyston in Glasgow, and Derek Ferguson, wanted | :13:36. | :13:39.
for the murder of Thomas Cameron in Bishopbriggs. | :13:39. | :13:42.
The defence in the trial of the serial killer Robert Black has | :13:42. | :13:45.
taken less than two hours to set out their case. The 64-year-old | :13:45. | :13:47.
Scot is accused of abducting and murdering the Northern Ireland | :13:48. | :13:52.
schoolgirl Jennifer Cardy 30 years ago. He denies the charges. The | :13:52. | :13:58.
Crown is due to give its closing statement to the jury tomorrow. | :13:58. | :13:59.
Police investigating the disappearance of a missing | :13:59. | :14:02.
financial adviser from Glasgow say they have had a number of sightings | :14:02. | :14:07.
of her car. Lynda Spence has not been seen since April, when she | :14:07. | :14:10.
left her parents' house in Glasgow Harbour. Detectives say her silver | :14:10. | :14:13.
Vauxhall Astra has been seen in parts of North Ayrshire and | :14:13. | :14:21.
Even the NHS is forgetting that men get breast cancer, according to | :14:21. | :14:25.
many of those who have had it. Around 30 men in Scotland are | :14:25. | :14:28.
diagnosed with breast cancer every year, but research for a health | :14:28. | :14:38.
:14:38. | :14:41. | ||
support website has revealed that many feel isolated. This car runs | :14:41. | :14:49.
from here to here. When the spot on his in the poll started bleeding, | :14:49. | :14:59.
:14:59. | :14:59. | ||
his doctor sent him for a biopsy, just in case. They were positive | :14:59. | :15:09.
:15:09. | :15:11. | ||
they were nothing wrong with me. I said to my wife, I have got cancer. | :15:11. | :15:16.
Bernard has never met met another man with the condition. Interviews | :15:16. | :15:22.
with other suggest many feel isolated expect the patience to be | :15:22. | :15:31.
women. In the information pack that the scent, they said that I should | :15:31. | :15:41.
:15:41. | :15:44. | ||
bring a soft brass with me. It was in very small pharmacy, but she | :15:44. | :15:48.
came through and told me that the medicine involved was only for | :15:48. | :15:57.
women. All of that time, they are having to deal with these | :15:57. | :16:07.
:16:07. | :16:09. | ||
challenges. One of the suggestions to come out of the campaign is that | :16:09. | :16:16.
the King Rabin for cancer should have the blue sport on it, to mark | :16:16. | :16:21.
the fact than men also suffer from the disease. | :16:21. | :16:24.
Three verses scratched on glass by Robert Burns have made a long- | :16:24. | :16:26.
awaited return to Dumfries. Using some kind of diamond stylus, or | :16:26. | :16:29.
even a diamond ring, Burns etched the poems on windows at his | :16:29. | :16:34.
favourite howff, the Globe Inn. Now, after 177 years, they are back - or | :16:34. | :16:43.
at least, exact copies of them are. It is one of Scotland's most | :16:43. | :16:49.
historic inns. It was already 170 years old when Robert Burns forced | :16:49. | :16:59.
:16:59. | :16:59. | ||
to men. The is the theme and where Robert Burns often slept. He | :16:59. | :17:05.
consummated an affair with the landlords Nice. He ended up | :17:05. | :17:15.
:17:15. | :17:21. | ||
fathering a daughter. He also aged some lines on the glass. Up here, | :17:21. | :17:31.
:17:31. | :17:37. | ||
is all lovely poorly Stewart, or charming Polly Stewart. The windows | :17:37. | :17:42.
where soul by it the hard-up owner of the time, but the Burns Society | :17:42. | :17:48.
tried to bring them back. Eventually, they were acquired by | :17:48. | :17:53.
the buns Museum in away. They are hanging on to them, but agreed for | :17:53. | :18:00.
these exact replicas to be made. The verses are not well known and | :18:00. | :18:07.
not amongst the poet's best. But they are in his hand. And after a | :18:07. | :18:15.
night of jollity downstairs, they may have wavered a bit. It we do | :18:15. | :18:21.
have been marvellous to have the courage also back in the place they | :18:21. | :18:25.
were meant to be. I think Scottish Heritage should have had the | :18:25. | :18:32.
foresight to realise the should have been returned to hear. They | :18:32. | :18:40.
are a hour Elgin Marbles and we want them back. | :18:40. | :18:50.
:18:50. | :18:51. | ||
Let's see how the sport is looking this evening. Here is David. | :18:51. | :18:54.
I will start with the news from France, where Celtic are playing | :18:54. | :18:57.
Rennes in the group stage of the Europa League - a match Celtic need | :18:57. | :19:01.
to take points from if they are to have a chance of staying in the | :19:01. | :19:11.
:19:11. | :19:15. | ||
Anthony Stokes here. But a few minutes later, they fell behind | :19:16. | :19:22.
following a disastrous mix up. Or deer, if you are a Celtic fan that | :19:22. | :19:27.
is not pleasant viewing. The half- time whistle has just gone. | :19:27. | :19:31.
And you can listen to the rest of the match on BBC Radio Scotland's | :19:31. | :19:35.
Sportsound programme. It is on air now. That is on 810 medium wave. | :19:35. | :19:38.
The prospect of a Scot playing for the men's Olympic football team may | :19:38. | :19:46.
The newly appointed Team GB manager Stuart Pearce wants the four home | :19:46. | :19:48.
nations represented in his side. But the Scottish Football | :19:48. | :19:51.
Association opposes the idea. A former Scotland boss fears it could | :19:51. | :20:01.
jeopardise the very existence of our national team. Don't be fooled. | :20:01. | :20:08.
This is no small political football. As Hope Powell and Stuart Pearce | :20:08. | :20:12.
where named as the managers of the Great Britain team is in the | :20:12. | :20:22.
:20:22. | :20:25. | ||
Olympics next year. Is he hoping that Scots will appear in the team? | :20:25. | :20:32.
Very much soul. I hope that nearby the time, the political staff will | :20:32. | :20:39.
go into the background and people will want to play. I do not see the | :20:39. | :20:47.
problem with playing of the auction is on the table. Here at Hampden, | :20:47. | :20:51.
the Scottish Football Association is very much opposed to the Great | :20:51. | :20:56.
Britain team, fearing it will jeopardise the Scottish teams | :20:56. | :21:06.
future. And the former Scotland manager agrees. Despite assurances | :21:06. | :21:13.
we have had from FIFA, I strongly suspect they would like to see a | :21:13. | :21:19.
Great Britain team in the European Championship and the World Cup. | :21:20. | :21:23.
on the women's side, two of the top Scottish internationals have said | :21:23. | :21:27.
they will play for their Great Britain team is selected. | :21:27. | :21:30.
St Johnstone say they are expecting to be inundated with applications | :21:30. | :21:34.
for the vacant position of team manager. They say they have already | :21:34. | :21:38.
had several inquiries. The man who's just left the post Derek | :21:38. | :21:41.
McInnes started his new job today at Bristol City and he said the | :21:41. | :21:44.
offer of a switch to English football's second tier was too good | :21:44. | :21:54.
:21:54. | :21:55. | ||
to resist. The opportunity to come and work in the championship is a | :21:55. | :22:01.
fantastic opportunity. I have left behind the very good club. People | :22:01. | :22:06.
say it is a small club, but it is a very good club and very good hard- | :22:06. | :22:12.
working people and good support. They may lack the numbers, but they | :22:12. | :22:22.
:22:22. | :22:22. | ||
do not like the passion for the club. | :22:22. | :22:25.
They are back in their thousands to spend the winter in Scotland. | :22:25. | :22:28.
Hundreds of thousands of geese are arriving from Iceland. You have | :22:28. | :22:31.
probably seen and heard them flying overhead, but the sight of them | :22:31. | :22:34.
taking off en masse at dawn each morning is spectacular. Andrew | :22:34. | :22:43.
Anderson got up early to see for himself. Early-morning and Montrose | :22:43. | :22:46.
and tens of thousands of pink- footed geese head off for the | :22:47. | :22:56.
winter. These people got up early as well to see one of nature's | :22:56. | :23:03.
great sights. We are keeping our fingers crossed that they will do | :23:03. | :23:12.
it today. They do not always do it in unison. For those who remain, | :23:12. | :23:16.
they were getting on grey and it would soon be time to head off for | :23:16. | :23:25.
breakfast. And the only goal. A sight worth getting up for. Yes, we | :23:25. | :23:29.
thought it was an amazing sight. I had never seen anything like that | :23:29. | :23:39.
:23:39. | :23:40. | ||
before. A it was fabulous. Even those who watched the geese all the | :23:40. | :23:48.
time, I never tire of seen them soaring up into the air. It is just | :23:48. | :23:52.
wonderful. Not only the sight of them, but the sound of them as well | :23:52. | :24:02.
as the take-off in unison. We have got the good site around here and | :24:02. | :24:06.
that is perfect for them. The numbers have increased since the | :24:06. | :24:16.
:24:16. | :24:18. | ||
1950s. Last year, geese numbers top 65,000. It is close to that already | :24:18. | :24:20.
and thousands more are expected in the next few weeks. | :24:20. | :24:24.
Well, it looked lovely at dawn over Montrose. But I think it has been | :24:24. | :24:34.
:24:34. | :24:37. | ||
I am afraid so. As we go into this evening and overnight, it will be a | :24:37. | :24:42.
similar story, cloudy and wait overnight. There are some strong | :24:42. | :24:47.
wins, coming up from the West and driving in that rain across the | :24:47. | :24:53.
country as we go through the small awards. It will be a wet night, but | :24:53. | :24:57.
still nailed, with temperatures just about edging up to double | :24:57. | :25:06.
figures. Tomorrow, the wet start in the West, but the score should be a | :25:06. | :25:11.
lot clear. The rain will be confined through parts of her Dale | :25:11. | :25:17.
as we head into the afternoon, so to the north of that, it will be an | :25:17. | :25:23.
improving picture for the Western Isles and even up as high as Orkney | :25:23. | :25:29.
and Shetland. There is that rain, just extending into Perthshire and | :25:29. | :25:37.
parts of Aberdeen sure. Temperatures 13 or 14 degrees | :25:37. | :25:42.
Celsius. The rest of the afternoon and evening, the weather front | :25:42. | :25:48.
pushes north again and the wind will be strong from the south. | :25:48. | :25:51.
Every look at the pressure chart, we can see what is happening after | :25:51. | :25:56.
that. We have got another another weather front coming in from the | :25:56. | :26:01.
West and that will work its way in bringing more rain before the | :26:01. | :26:05.
weekend. For the start of the weekend, it will be a wet and windy | :26:05. | :26:09.
start, but it will improve as we go through the day. Here's how it | :26:09. | :26:19.
plays out on Saturday. The rain in the West pitching in from the West | :26:19. | :26:22.
and as it pushes through, the West will start to brighten up, but it | :26:22. | :26:27.
will still be a windy day and not particularly pleasant. Sunday, I am | :26:27. | :26:31.
afraid not much good either. Now just before seven o'clock, a | :26:31. | :26:35.
summary of tonight's top stories... A BBC Scotland investigation has | :26:35. | :26:37.
uncovered evidence of alleged criminality in the past business | :26:37. | :26:39.
dealings of the new owner of Rangers. | :26:39. | :26:43.
Colonel Gaddafi has been captured and shot dead in his home city of | :26:43. | :26:46.
Sirte in Libya. His death came when he tried to flee with supporters, | :26:46. | :26:48.
as transitional forces gained control of the former leader's last | :26:48. | :26:51.
stronghold. Fighters say they found him hiding in a concrete drain pipe | :26:51. | :27:00.
after reports that his convoy had been attacked by NATO war planes. | :27:00. | :27:04. |
