Welcome to Monday's Reporting Scotland. Tonight on your national

:00:12.:00:15.

news... The former Scottish athletic star

:00:15.:00:17.

Liz McColgan has been found not guilty of assaulting her estranged

:00:18.:00:27.
:00:28.:00:34.

husband. Later in the programme...

:00:35.:00:37.

As the festive season approaches, are wallets staying tightly shut?

:00:37.:00:40.

Christmas is coming, the lights are on but where's the retail rush? The

:00:40.:00:44.

numbers visiting high streets and shopping centres take a nose-dive.

:00:44.:00:47.

It's a bumpy ride in Scotland. We've got more potholes per mile

:00:47.:00:54.

than anywhere else in Britain. Rock climbing started in Scotland

:00:54.:00:57.

one hundred and forty years ago. Now intrepid BBC filmmakers have

:00:57.:01:03.

decided to re-create that first ascent.

:01:03.:01:05.

The former world champion athlete Liz McColgan has been found not

:01:05.:01:09.

guilty of assaulting her estranged husband. A court heard today how

:01:09.:01:12.

the couple had fallen out over a solicitor's letter she received

:01:12.:01:16.

from Peter McColgan suggesting they should sell their family home. If

:01:16.:01:19.

convicted, it would have spelt the end of the Olympic silver

:01:19.:01:29.

:01:29.:03:41.

There was bad news for retailers today as figures suggested that the

:03:41.:03:43.

number of people passing through Scotland's shopping areas has

:03:43.:03:46.

fallen by 9% on last year. The Scottish Retail Consortium has

:03:46.:03:49.

called it a nosedive and with just over a month to go until Christmas,

:03:50.:03:59.
:04:00.:04:01.

retailers will be hoping for a This year, a lot of bang, but not

:04:01.:04:05.

so many box. The man Scottish consumers spent last month was

:04:05.:04:12.

lower than the year before by 0.1%. Inflation soared by 5%. But for is

:04:12.:04:16.

another measure, the number of people walking past the shop doors.

:04:16.:04:23.

It has nosedived by 9%, three times the UK rate of fall. Fewer people

:04:23.:04:28.

are going shopping. Why? There is less money around and prices keep

:04:28.:04:33.

going up. It is very worrying to see these figures so close to

:04:33.:04:38.

Christmas. Retailers have had a very tough time up until now. Lots

:04:38.:04:41.

of them are investing an enormous amount of hope into Christmas. What

:04:41.:04:45.

they really want to see his spending going up, which requires a

:04:45.:04:50.

shopper numbers to go up. There are other changes. We are shifting our

:04:50.:04:55.

spending on line. That is good news for Amazon's Scottish distribution

:04:55.:05:00.

centres. And we are spending earlier because of last year's snow.

:05:00.:05:05.

Today is manic Monday, the first of two spikes inactivity. If the

:05:05.:05:09.

system works, then people will be increasingly attracted to doing

:05:09.:05:15.

that, rather than going into the shops. And you can prize compare

:05:15.:05:19.

online. Price is a driver during a recession and going online maybe

:05:19.:05:24.

the solution for many. The big growth area this Christmas could be

:05:24.:05:29.

around smart phones. One scan of a barcode on this and I can get price

:05:29.:05:33.

comparison online and on the High Street to find out where the best

:05:33.:05:37.

deals are. Between technology and caution on the economy, the

:05:37.:05:41.

consumer is in charge. I am usually quite lucky at Christmas and I

:05:41.:05:45.

normally get bargains. I try to get quite a bit online. It makes it

:05:45.:05:52.

easier. You can shop around. I just give my wife my cheque book and she

:05:52.:05:56.

spends it! As one Glasgow Shop founder this morning, another way

:05:56.:06:01.

of boosting football and getting people into your shop, getting

:06:01.:06:08.

Westlife to pay a visit! Still to come: The unique link that

:06:08.:06:11.

is helping recovering drug addicts here, as well as some of the

:06:11.:06:16.

poorest people in Africa. So Scottish fishermen are hailing a

:06:16.:06:20.

new deal to sell their prawns closer to home instead of abroad.

:06:21.:06:25.

The SPL are celebrating the signing of a lucrative new five-year TV

:06:25.:06:29.

deal. But Andy Murray is sweating over his future at the ATP World

:06:29.:06:39.
:06:39.:06:40.

Tour finals in London, after losing out to David Ferrer.

:06:40.:06:44.

Her murder trial has heard how the badly decomposed body of a toddler

:06:44.:06:52.

was found in a top. -- in a cot. There was a terrible smell in the

:06:52.:06:55.

house and a child had been dead for some time. His mother denies

:06:55.:07:01.

murdering him and pretending he was still alive.

:07:01.:07:05.

The jury heard today what a paramedic and police found in his

:07:05.:07:09.

flat in Paisley when called to it in March last year. Raymond Kelly,

:07:10.:07:15.

a paramedic, was first to arrive at 6:20pm. He told the court that the

:07:15.:07:19.

first thing he noticed was the smell. They did not seem to be any

:07:19.:07:24.

electricity. The place was in darkness. He said he went into the

:07:24.:07:28.

room and saw a baby. He quickly realised there had been a death. He

:07:28.:07:32.

called the police. The police constable that derive told the

:07:33.:07:37.

court that there was a god awful smell. I saw the child lying in the

:07:37.:07:42.

cot and I knew we had been dead for some time. The body was quite badly

:07:42.:07:47.

decomposed. Andrew Dunn was a detective

:07:47.:07:50.

sergeant with the police at the time. He was the crime scene

:07:50.:07:54.

manager that night. He told the court when the end cake is came to

:07:54.:07:58.

take the body to York Hill, that he had to be carried out on the

:07:58.:08:04.

mattress. -- when the undertakers came. He told the court about the

:08:04.:08:08.

unkempt and dirty flat. There were open milk cartons, alcohol bottles

:08:08.:08:13.

and clothes strewn around the floor. The police constable said there was

:08:13.:08:18.

a pile of soiled nappies sitting in a child's bath. The court also

:08:18.:08:23.

heard from the health visitor Linda Flanagan. She became involved with

:08:23.:08:27.

the mother of the child in August 2009. She told the court that she

:08:27.:08:31.

had repeatedly tried to visit her of but on each occasion there was

:08:31.:08:36.

nobody in. At the beginning of March, 2010, she officially

:08:36.:08:44.

notified social services of her concerns. The mother sobbed loudly

:08:44.:08:48.

in the dock. She denies murdering her son and all the charges against

:08:48.:08:52.

her, including attempting to defeat justice, by pretending to a number

:08:52.:09:01.

of people that Declan was still alive. The trial continues.

:09:01.:09:05.

Scotland has more pot holes per mile than anywhere else in Britain,

:09:05.:09:09.

according to an army of pothole hunters. It is the result of

:09:09.:09:13.

research carried out by members of the motoring organisation. Many

:09:13.:09:16.

councils have increased spending on road repairs after two severe

:09:17.:09:26.
:09:27.:09:27.

winters. They are the bane of every driver's life. The cause of bumpy

:09:27.:09:31.

journeys and damage to cars. At this garage in Aberdeen, they are

:09:31.:09:37.

fixing more pothole damage than ever. This brings, the wheels are

:09:38.:09:46.

damaged, and this year is much worse. -- springs. You are talking

:09:46.:09:50.

about hundreds of vehicles compared to last year. Now a survey suggests

:09:50.:09:54.

that the problem in Scotland is worse than anywhere in the UK.

:09:54.:09:58.

According to the Automobile Association, are a typical stretch

:09:58.:10:03.

of road, there could be 35 pot holes or defects, compared to the

:10:03.:10:07.

UK average of 28. This was no surprise to some Edinburgh taxi

:10:07.:10:14.

drivers. The repair to my black cab have been more than double in the

:10:14.:10:20.

last two years. Sometimes when we were put 12 hour shift, then we

:10:20.:10:27.

feel sore in our back. -- when we work a 12 hour shift. The roads in

:10:27.:10:33.

Edinburgh are bad. Councils are responsible for the vast bulk of

:10:33.:10:38.

our roads. Two severe winters stretched resources and many up to

:10:38.:10:43.

the amount they spent on repairs, but money is tight. With the

:10:43.:10:48.

pressure on council budgets throughout Scotland, we need to

:10:48.:10:56.

make hard decisions. For example, we have done over 8000 pot holes in

:10:56.:11:01.

the last financial year. Battling pot holes can seemed

:11:01.:11:05.

never-ending. Almost as soon as one gets repaired, there is a report of

:11:05.:11:10.

a new one somewhere else. But the number of potholes can beg

:11:10.:11:13.

legitimate questions about how much is spent trying to maintain roads

:11:13.:11:19.

before they deteriorate. The worse the road is to begin with, the more

:11:19.:11:26.

likely pot holes are to form. Now some of the other stories

:11:26.:11:30.

across Scotland. Two students at Forth Valley College's Falkirk

:11:30.:11:37.

campus have the dreaded tuberculosis. The cases are

:11:37.:11:46.

believed to be linked. -- have contracted tuberculosis. Family

:11:46.:11:50.

members and students will be given precautionary checks.

:11:50.:11:57.

Jobs will be created in Moray. Capita is opening a call centre in

:11:57.:12:00.

Forres. Staff will be working on behalf of an energy company and

:12:00.:12:04.

will start work in February. Europe's biggest lottery winners

:12:04.:12:08.

have given 1 million to the Scottish National Party. Chris and

:12:08.:12:12.

Colin Weir from Largs say that the gift from the 161 million winnings

:12:12.:12:17.

is about more than party politics. It is the largest donation in the

:12:17.:12:26.

SNP's history and will help to fund their independence referendum.

:12:26.:12:30.

A unique link giving employment and hope has been forged between Ghana

:12:30.:12:34.

and Greenock. It is based on a naturally occurring nut, harvested

:12:34.:12:41.

by the poorest people in Africa. The project has helped them and

:12:41.:12:44.

also recovering drug addicts in Inverclyde.

:12:44.:12:49.

It is about as far from the heat of Africa as you could imagine. From

:12:49.:12:53.

high in the hills above Greenock, comes hope for impoverished women

:12:54.:13:00.

and children. Shea butter, the product of a wild growing nut in

:13:00.:13:05.

Ghana, is being turned into Premium soap and cosmetics. It provides

:13:05.:13:13.

fair trade income for people in Ghana. Women have been earning

:13:13.:13:17.

child trafficking. We are changing To gathering there not only give

:13:37.:13:43.

:13:48.:13:53.

The charity plows products back in two Ghana and provides a school for

:14:08.:14:12.

stay drug-free. The process has given us the opportunity to get

:14:12.:14:17.

back into employment. It has given us confidence. It has shown us new

:14:17.:14:23.

skills to get back out there and back into society. If you don't

:14:24.:14:33.
:14:34.:14:36.

have a job, nobody will touch you. It will give us a bit of money.

:14:36.:14:41.

That will give us something to focus on and a normal life. A new

:14:41.:14:46.

factory will provide 20 jobs giving employment hope in Ghana and

:14:46.:14:51.

Greenock. And from shea butter to prongs.

:14:51.:14:56.

West coast prawn fishermen say a significant deal to supply a major

:14:56.:15:01.

supermarket chain will allow them to get rid of their dependency on

:15:01.:15:05.

unstable markets. From this week, west-coast Proms are going to be

:15:05.:15:14.

sold at hundreds of Sainsbury's stores. The search for fresh

:15:14.:15:18.

Scottish Proms can be fruitless. It is seen as a travesty that as the

:15:19.:15:23.

West coast's finest shellfish is exported but then bars of landing

:15:23.:15:28.

here, customers are left to buy an inferior product imported from as

:15:28.:15:36.

far away from Bangladesh and Thailand. It is incredible.

:15:36.:15:44.

Compared to our stuff, which is just on the doorstep. It is a far

:15:44.:15:50.

tastier product. There are no rubbish Scottish Proms. They're all

:15:50.:15:55.

good quality, succulent and delicious. In a unique deal struck

:15:55.:16:00.

between the Sainsbury's supermarket chain and local fishermen, fresh

:16:00.:16:03.

supplies of these are set to become available at fish counters

:16:03.:16:07.

throughout its UK stores. I am hoping it will bring a bit of

:16:07.:16:13.

stability to the prices. For too long, they have been there too low.

:16:13.:16:17.

We were used to have a big fleet of boats to get them, but there's

:16:17.:16:23.

hardly any left. That as many been down to poor prices. The contract

:16:23.:16:27.

is a godsend for struggling West coast fishing communities.

:16:27.:16:31.

Fishermen from here can reduce the dependency they have on overseas

:16:31.:16:35.

markets. It is also voted for offer them some protection from an

:16:35.:16:40.

unsteady eurozone. There is obviously tremendous economic

:16:40.:16:45.

volatility and currency volatility. We are hoping that the immediate

:16:45.:16:51.

benefit will be a degree of price stability, which allows the crews

:16:51.:16:55.

and the boats themselves to plan their futures better. Sainsbury's

:16:55.:16:59.

bosses say they are delighted to be involved in a partnership which

:16:59.:17:01.

gives quality to customers while supporting the Scottish fishing

:17:01.:17:11.
:17:11.:17:12.

industry. And now the sport.

:17:12.:17:16.

The Scottish Premier League has secured a new live TV deal worth

:17:16.:17:20.

50 million more than the previous one. Sky and ESPN have renewed

:17:20.:17:25.

their skirt partnership with the league for a further five years.

:17:25.:17:30.

That may help in the search for a new sponsor.

:17:30.:17:34.

Despite what you might sometimes hear and see, the Scottish Premier

:17:34.:17:40.

League can actually be quite good. Sky and ESPN certainly thinks so.

:17:40.:17:44.

They are committed to a new five- year deal with the League. The

:17:44.:17:49.

previous one struck three years ago was worth 65 million. Today, at

:17:49.:17:52.

the Scottish Premier League announced that deal would be cut

:17:52.:18:01.

short to be replaced by a new The SPL cannot go into the

:18:01.:18:06.

financial detail, but I understand it is worth 85 million, an

:18:06.:18:11.

increase of 50 million on the previous deal. Those TV deals are

:18:11.:18:15.

on the decrees, so that is pretty good business. The SPL hope that it

:18:15.:18:21.

will help them attract a new sponsor. I think this is

:18:21.:18:24.

fundamental to the type of sponsorship deal and it puts us in

:18:24.:18:28.

good shape. We have seen increases in viewer numbers on to be over the

:18:28.:18:32.

past few years. There is a real interest in Scottish football and

:18:32.:18:38.

the SPL, and a thing that has been reflected in the announcement today.

:18:38.:18:44.

Mr Doncaster says that viewing figures are by 28% following the

:18:44.:18:49.

recent deal, but there is some doubt about whether that is due to

:18:49.:18:53.

the SPL. If you are signing up to a Sky package, you are doing it to

:18:53.:18:58.

get the English games. You will watch the Scottish football as well,

:18:58.:19:04.

but would you get that deal if you did not get the English football?

:19:04.:19:09.

Probably not. It is misleading to say that Scottish football is

:19:09.:19:16.

attractive purely based on their viewing figures. The clubs have

:19:16.:19:21.

been persuaded not to pursue their plans to launch their own channel.

:19:21.:19:25.

Andy Murray's future at the ATP World Tour finals hangs in the

:19:25.:19:29.

balance. He aggravated a groin injury after he was defeated by

:19:29.:19:33.

David Ferrer. He will decide whether he is fit enough to carry

:19:33.:19:39.

on in the tournament. We report from the O2 Arena in London.

:19:39.:19:44.

A warm welcome from the London crowd. They watched their man score

:19:44.:19:51.

an early lead in game three. But with him serving badly, he allowed

:19:51.:19:55.

David Ferrer to break right back. To a very good game from the

:19:55.:19:59.

Spaniard but too many mistakes from Andy Murray. He did find some

:19:59.:20:05.

rhythm. But the Spaniard was digging in and claimed the first

:20:05.:20:09.

set, while the Scot was left frustrated and hurting in more ways

:20:09.:20:15.

than one. The massage seemed to work wonders because to do than

:20:15.:20:20.

:20:20.:20:25.

But to let that advantage slip again. He found his way through the

:20:25.:20:30.

second time, but David Ferrer went one better, getting his first ever

:20:30.:20:40.
:20:40.:20:43.

victory against the spot on hard court surface. -- this spot.

:20:48.:20:54.

:20:58.:21:02.

Wednesday. Gary Anderson's dream of winning

:21:02.:21:07.

his first ever grandson of darts has fallen short. He lost out to 15

times World Champion Phil The Power Taylor in Wolverhampton. It was a

:21:11.:21:15.

one-sided final but Garrett Anderson received a 60,000

consolation prize for reaching the last two. -- Gary Anderson.

Newtonmore won de shinty World Cup title by beating Kyles Athletic.

:21:31.:21:37.

Newtonmore add this title to become a niche Cup that they won last year.

:21:37.:21:47.
:21:47.:21:47.

Congratulations to them. -- These days, huge numbers of people

:21:47.:21:50.

around the world climb for sport. But just who were the first people

:21:51.:21:54.

to climb, not just because they had to, but for the sheer fun of it? A

:21:55.:21:57.

BBC documentary reveals that 140 years ago, a team of young Scots

:21:58.:22:00.

climbed across to the Stack of Handa, on the Sutherland coast

:22:00.:22:02.

which was, quite possibly, the world's first ascent. Our

:22:03.:22:08.

correspondent David Henderson takes up the story.

:22:08.:22:18.
:22:18.:22:21.

Take care! Setting off across the abyss. Scotland's leading rock

:22:21.:22:27.

climb or takes his life in his hands. He swings out towards the

:22:27.:22:34.

cliff. It is a massive land work. It really is the start of it. It is

:22:34.:22:36.

the first time recreational climbing has been recorded in our

:22:36.:22:42.

country. It predates anything in the Lake District. Rock climbing

:22:42.:22:48.

started in Scotland. 140 years ago, three young men arrived here by

:22:48.:22:56.

boat. They cross from the North tip of Lewis. They came to climb and

:22:56.:23:05.

the stack just for fun. It must have been one of the greatest. It

:23:05.:23:09.

was certainly mentioned in my childhood. There was a lot of

:23:09.:23:14.

competition and aggression between and the people of Lewis and of

:23:14.:23:22.

Sutherland. The men of Louis would construct themselves in this way

:23:22.:23:28.

and tell others to beat that. today, this is an amazing feat. In

:23:28.:23:33.

the 1870s, it was much more. A moment in history when the sport of

:23:33.:23:38.

climbing was born. Climbing has changed a lot since that epic first

:23:38.:23:42.

ascent. The equipment is better, and as a sport, it is enjoyed by

:23:42.:23:48.

millions of people around the world. At its heart, it remains the same.

:23:48.:23:51.

All you need is a sense of adventure and a wild dream. For

:23:51.:23:57.

many years, this kind was ignored and forgotten. Now, it can take its

:23:57.:24:02.

place as the first of its kind. And you can see more on that on BBC Two

:24:02.:24:12.
:24:12.:24:15.

Scotland tomorrow night at 7pm. Let's get the weather forecast now

:24:15.:24:23.

Things are going to get more changeable by the middle of the

:24:23.:24:28.

week. The seething, there is a lot of dry weather initially, although

:24:28.:24:32.

we will start to see an area of more persistent rain edging and

:24:32.:24:36.

across western and southern Scotland. It will extend across the

:24:36.:24:40.

country. We will see some heavy bursts of rain. There will be some

:24:40.:24:43.

mist and fog patches developing over the higher ground of the

:24:43.:24:47.

Southern Highlands. By the end of the night, we will see clearer

:24:47.:24:50.

conditions developing along the west coast. The temperatures will

:24:50.:24:55.

reflect that. Further East, under that rain, that temperatures will

:24:55.:25:00.

be as high as nine degrees. Tomorrow starts off with this dry,

:25:00.:25:05.

clear weather in the West, which turns to sunshine once we see first

:25:05.:25:09.

flight. Effectively, it chases that rain away as it pushes the way into

:25:09.:25:13.

the North Sea. Some lovely spells of sunshine developing for western

:25:13.:25:16.

Scotland during the morning. If we take a closer look at tomorrow

:25:16.:25:24.

afternoon, for the Inner Hebrides and the south-west, at a beautiful

:25:24.:25:29.

day. Since buying -- fine spells of sunshine. Nor Sir, it will be

:25:29.:25:36.

similar. Along the North, a lot of sunshine to be found. Rain and

:25:36.:25:40.

cloud in Shetland. That could be the legacy of the morning's cloud

:25:40.:25:44.

and rain. But that will clear during the afternoon. For the

:25:44.:25:49.

eastern coastal areas towards the border, dry with bright spells of

:25:49.:25:53.

sunshine. Temperatures of ten Celsius. During the afternoon, we

:25:53.:25:57.

will start to see a bit of a change with cloud increasing across the

:25:57.:26:01.

Outer Hebrides. A strong south- westerly wind develops across the

:26:01.:26:05.

Outer Hebrides. For the outlook, this weather front will straddle

:26:05.:26:10.

the country on Wednesday, bringing outbreaks of rain for western and

:26:10.:26:14.

southern Scotland. Here is that frame. It will be heavier cross and

:26:14.:26:16.

North-West with light from the south-west. Little gets through to

:26:16.:26:22.

Now, just before seven o'clock, a summary of tonight's top stories...
