Welcome to Reporting Scotland. Tonight: The clean up begins and | :00:15. | :00:18.
now households and businesses assess the full cost of yesterday's | :00:18. | :00:28.
:00:28. | :00:29. | ||
storm. For some it was a close shave. Today it I feel as if | :00:29. | :00:35.
someone up there doesn't like me. Engineers have been working all day | :00:35. | :00:37.
to restore power to thousands of people left without electricity. | :00:37. | :00:40.
We'll have the latest on that and the disruption to travel. | :00:40. | :00:43.
Also in the programme: Police launch an investigation after a | :00:43. | :00:48.
teenager is found dead near a block of flats in Greenock. | :00:48. | :00:52.
And how the appliance of science is helping our top athletes as they | :00:52. | :01:00.
make their final preparations for the London Olympics. | :01:00. | :01:03.
Homeowners have been clearing up the damage, insurers have been | :01:03. | :01:05.
assessing the damage and tonight thousands of households are still | :01:05. | :01:09.
feeling the effects of the damage wreaked by the worst storms in a | :01:09. | :01:14.
generation. While travel services have been slowly getting back to | :01:14. | :01:22.
normal, many families are tonight still without power. In a moment we | :01:22. | :01:28.
will assess the likely cost, but first we are looking at the clean- | :01:28. | :01:37.
It is the image that defines the new year storm of 2012, and today | :01:37. | :01:41.
the clear-up began. The ruse of these houses in north Glasgow were | :01:41. | :01:48.
damaged when cladding from flats hit them. Incredibly, no one was | :01:48. | :01:54.
harmed and one neighbour is counting his blessings. Today I | :01:54. | :01:59.
feel as if someone up there does like me after all, I am feeling | :01:59. | :02:04.
very lucky. If you look at the other two houses, this could have | :02:04. | :02:08.
been my block. In another part of Glasgow, they are sweeping up the | :02:09. | :02:16.
debris but there is still real danger from loose masonry overhead. | :02:16. | :02:21.
We are not able to use the front door because there is a large stone | :02:21. | :02:24.
balanced overhead. Hopefully the clear-up will not take too much | :02:24. | :02:30.
longer and we can get the road opened again. This man is trying to | :02:30. | :02:38.
save his classic car. Jaguar Mark two 3.8, in a bit of a stay but it | :02:38. | :02:42.
is worth quite a lot if it is restored. It is my pride and joy, | :02:42. | :02:47.
my retirement project so I would like to get it out. Today's | :02:47. | :02:51.
Scottish Power were trying to reconnect some of the 20,000 | :02:51. | :02:56.
households still without electricity. It is difficult. These | :02:56. | :03:03.
are the most powerful winds I have ever seen in my career at the | :03:03. | :03:10.
company. It was really explosive yesterday. He it took until mid- | :03:10. | :03:13.
afternoon for train services to the north out of Edinburgh Waverley to | :03:13. | :03:20.
return to normal. Once again today, it is miserable, wet and windy here. | :03:20. | :03:24.
It is a far cry from those violent gales we saw yesterday that caused | :03:24. | :03:30.
so much damage, and while it is unlikely we will see those forces | :03:30. | :03:35.
of winds again in the near future, it looks like there is still some | :03:35. | :03:40.
rotten weather to come. So Irton for the rest of the month we are | :03:41. | :03:44.
stuck with low pressure coming in, travelling up to the west and | :03:44. | :03:49.
north-west of Scotland. The advantage is that it does keep us | :03:49. | :03:53.
relatively mild, we don't see a lot of frost, but on the other hand we | :03:53. | :04:00.
see a lot of water and wind. this family know what to do if it | :04:00. | :04:07.
happens again. Just couldn't up, that is all we can do. We will just | :04:07. | :04:13.
cuddle up for the day! It's still too early to say what | :04:13. | :04:16.
the eventual cost of the storm damage will be, but it's certain | :04:16. | :04:19.
that insurance claims will run into millions of pounds. And as our | :04:19. | :04:22.
correspondent Jamie McIvor found, the storm has been good for | :04:22. | :04:31.
business... For some. This came off a roof at the height of yesterday's | :04:31. | :04:38.
storm. The company doing the repairs has not known a day like it | :04:38. | :04:45.
in 20 years. Today alone we have received in the region of 250 calls | :04:45. | :04:49.
ranging from slipped tiles to Jimmy's coming through. The repairs | :04:49. | :04:53.
are never cheap, but for the homeowner there will be an | :04:53. | :04:57.
insurance claim. He it is quite substantial. The lead has blown off, | :04:57. | :05:02.
and it will be a few 1000 pounds I would think. In some tenements, | :05:02. | :05:06.
there is a potential problem - different homeowners share the same | :05:06. | :05:10.
roof. In a property where there isn't a factor, you would have to | :05:10. | :05:15.
get together with your neighbours and put individual claims into your | :05:15. | :05:20.
own insurance companies. The insurance companies would then get | :05:20. | :05:24.
together and a push and the lost between the people. The storm | :05:24. | :05:28.
damage has meant welcome work for building firms, but what about the | :05:28. | :05:33.
cost to the rest of the economy? The Storm kept the shoppers at home, | :05:34. | :05:37.
while for some other businesses the problems are practical. By this | :05:37. | :05:42.
afternoon, this village in East Lothian has been without power for | :05:42. | :05:47.
more than 24 hours. Despite its best efforts to cope, this hotel | :05:47. | :05:52.
and restaurant had to close. It will cost them thousands of pounds | :05:52. | :05:57.
in lost business. On Tuesday we had 180 people booked, and we managed | :05:57. | :06:02.
to do some soup and sandwiches for 20 of them who came early, other | :06:02. | :06:07.
than that we made phone calls and cancelled. Today we were booked for | :06:07. | :06:12.
a funeral and we had to cancel again. Nationally the bill for the | :06:12. | :06:16.
damage yesterday will be massive. Insurance companies are still | :06:16. | :06:20.
working out the final cost, they expected to be tens of millions, | :06:20. | :06:24.
but if anything the overall effect on the economy might be tempered | :06:24. | :06:29.
simply because it was a bank holiday so many people were off | :06:29. | :06:32.
work anyway. The New Year storm was so serious, | :06:32. | :06:35.
not just because of the wind speeds but because it battered through | :06:35. | :06:37.
Scotland's most densely populated areas, bringing down masonry onto | :06:37. | :06:41.
cars and disrupting the transport network. But rural Scotland didn't | :06:41. | :06:44.
escape and many farmers have also been counting the cost of storm | :06:44. | :06:54.
damage. Cameron Buttle's been to one farm in East Lothian. I am at | :06:54. | :06:59.
this found, and what Row are looking at here does not look too | :06:59. | :07:05.
dramatic. A few panels ripped off, but inside the shed you can see | :07:05. | :07:09.
those panels when they came off hit the roof as they went along, and it | :07:09. | :07:15.
has punctured holes along the shed. The farm is run by John, this has | :07:15. | :07:22.
done quite a lot of damage. Yes, it is not just outside, it is inside. | :07:22. | :07:26.
It is the cartwheeling effect and the damage it has done all the way | :07:26. | :07:31.
down the route. You are without power in here and you have even | :07:31. | :07:40.
more machinery in here, don't you? Yes, we use the sheds for storage, | :07:40. | :07:44.
and for storing machinery, and we have animal feed and fertiliser. | :07:44. | :07:50.
This piece of equipment is about 140,000, and this will be tens of | :07:50. | :07:56.
thousands of pounds to repair the roof alone? Yes, at least tens of | :07:56. | :08:02.
thousands of pounds. The good thing is it is insured but it is the | :08:02. | :08:05.
falling short stuff that is an inconvenience. For anyone involved | :08:05. | :08:10.
in the storm, it is the tidying up because the debris has gone into | :08:10. | :08:14.
the fields. You would normally be doing other work service is a major | :08:14. | :08:19.
setback for you. It is a major inconvenience in the time it will | :08:19. | :08:24.
take. The major setback will be when they stripped the route back | :08:24. | :08:29.
to repair it. That is when there will be real potential problems. | :08:29. | :08:33.
For they are hoping for no rain no snow because there is nothing they | :08:33. | :08:37.
can do about those holes in the roof at the moment. Catriona Renton | :08:37. | :08:41.
joins me now. Catriona, what's the latest on the clear up and power | :08:41. | :08:47.
reconnections? We have got the latest this evening. Tonight there | :08:47. | :08:52.
are still 21,500 homes across the country without electricity. | :08:52. | :08:56.
Hundreds of engineers have been working through driving rain and | :08:56. | :09:01.
bitter cold in those awful conditions to reconnect lines. | :09:01. | :09:06.
Scottish Power say around 12,500 homes are without power across | :09:06. | :09:12.
their network but they hope to supply another 6000 homes tonight. | :09:12. | :09:22.
:09:22. | :09:22. | ||
Scottish Hydro say 10091000 of their homes are without power. -- | :09:23. | :09:29.
9000. People have dealt with more in the last couple of days they may | :09:29. | :09:32.
have been the last six months. Travellers getting back to normal | :09:32. | :09:39.
but fallen trees have caused a lot of problems. Network Rail have had | :09:39. | :09:46.
to deploy more than 350 teams to remove 856 trees. As ever, just | :09:46. | :09:51.
check before you go out in case fallen trees are causing problems. | :09:51. | :09:53.
And following the storm, we will be devoting next Wednesday lunchtime's | :09:53. | :09:56.
consumer slot to your questions regarding any financial fall-out | :09:56. | :09:59.
from the devastating winds. As ever, our money expert Fergus Muirhead in | :09:59. | :10:03.
the chair. Whether it's questions over insurance claims, travel | :10:03. | :10:09.
disruption or simply who is liable for what. The details of how to | :10:09. | :10:13.
contact Fergus are on your screen now. | :10:13. | :10:16.
You're watching Reporting Scotland from the BBC. Still to come on the | :10:16. | :10:19.
programme: The surprising connection between Robert the Bruce | :10:19. | :10:24.
and Tottenham in London. And great news for greyhounds - | :10:24. | :10:28.
they're getting better treatment when they retire. | :10:28. | :10:31.
In sport: Hearts pay their players their December wages at last, after | :10:31. | :10:35.
an ultimatum from the Premier League. The club will face | :10:35. | :10:38.
sanctions if their January salaries aren't paid on time, but what | :10:38. | :10:42.
sanctions? We'll tell you the options. That, plus details of Andy | :10:42. | :10:49.
Murray in Australia. Police are treating as suspicious | :10:49. | :10:52.
the death of a teenager whose body was found outside a block of flats | :10:52. | :10:56.
in Greenock. The youth, who hasn't been named yet, was found at | :10:56. | :11:04.
quarter-to-ten yesterday morning. A postmortem is being carried out to | :11:04. | :11:09.
establish the cause of death. Aileen Clarke reports. Flowers for | :11:09. | :11:15.
the young man who died here. The teenager already being missed. The | :11:15. | :11:19.
body of the 17 year-old man was found just outside these flat at | :11:19. | :11:24.
about quarter to 10 yesterday morning. This is where much of the | :11:24. | :11:29.
police activity has been centred this afternoon. While a post-mortem | :11:29. | :11:33.
examination was being carried out this afternoon, at the flat where | :11:33. | :11:37.
he was found investigators and forensic specialists were getting | :11:37. | :11:42.
to work. They were looking for clues as to how this 17 year-old | :11:42. | :11:49.
lost his life. A crime photographer was also called in to photograph | :11:49. | :11:56.
the area. Antigua Street remains cordoned off. Police investigations | :11:56. | :11:59.
into this young man's apparently violent death are very much under | :11:59. | :12:03.
way. A leading charity is claiming that | :12:03. | :12:05.
thousands of Scottish families are struggling to heat their homes | :12:05. | :12:08.
because energy suppliers are vastly underfunding schemes to tackle fuel | :12:08. | :12:12.
poverty. Save the Children says that more than 64,000 families | :12:12. | :12:15.
should qualify for a rebate on their bills under a UK Government | :12:15. | :12:23.
initiative, but only 3% actually get any cash. | :12:23. | :12:26.
The RSPB are asking walkers in the Western Isles to keep an eye out | :12:27. | :12:31.
for oil-covered sea birds along the west coast of the islands. A dozen | :12:31. | :12:34.
birds have been washed up in the past week from the north of Lewis, | :12:34. | :12:38.
down to Eriskay, an area stretching over 100 miles. Rescued birds have | :12:38. | :12:47.
been cared for but five of the guillemots have died. It is likely | :12:47. | :12:53.
that some kind of cargo ship has cleared its tanks out. It is only | :12:53. | :12:58.
speculation but there is only one way in which oil can get into the | :12:58. | :13:04.
sea in that kind of quantity, and it is man. There are a lot more | :13:04. | :13:09.
birds are out there. A large number are likely to die, and many will | :13:09. | :13:14.
die just through ingesting the oil. Some of the other stories across | :13:14. | :13:16.
Scotland this Wednesday now. A hearing has begun into accusations | :13:16. | :13:19.
that a nurse slapped a resident at a North-East care home. The | :13:19. | :13:22.
allegations faced by Badarmaine Garnett relate to her time at the | :13:22. | :13:25.
Sunnybank home in Cruden Bay in 2008. The Nursing and Midwifery | :13:25. | :13:27.
Council is also investigating claims Ms Garnett put the same | :13:27. | :13:30.
woman's nightdress on her so that her arms were trapped inside, and | :13:30. | :13:33.
she could not move. She denies the charges. | :13:33. | :13:36.
Scotland's fisheries minister says 2012 will be a vital one for the | :13:36. | :13:38.
industry as long-awaited reforms are made to Europe's Common | :13:38. | :13:43.
Fisheries Policy. Richard Lochhead said it would be a crucial | :13:43. | :13:47.
opportunity to bring negotiating powers back to Scotland. Industry | :13:47. | :13:49.
leaders have called for government help to deliver economic stability | :13:49. | :13:52.
following tough new rules on the amount of time boats can spend at | :13:52. | :13:58.
Multi-million pound land deals linked to the 2014 Commonwealth | :13:58. | :14:03.
Games in Glasgow are to be looked at by police. It follows a | :14:03. | :14:06.
complaint by the SNP MSP for Cathcart, James Dornan, who wants | :14:06. | :14:16.
:14:16. | :14:18. | ||
to establish whether public money Now, what's the connection between | :14:18. | :14:21.
one of Scotland's most famous kings and one of London's most notorious | :14:21. | :14:25.
boroughs? The answer is that Robert the Bruce owned land in Tottenham | :14:25. | :14:30.
in Haringey before claiming the Scottish throne in the 14th century. | :14:30. | :14:32.
But historians are now trying to fill in some missing historical | :14:32. | :14:35.
gaps between Bruce and that part of north London. From Haringey, Tim | :14:35. | :14:45.
Reid reports. The signs are everywhere. The local | :14:45. | :14:50.
museum is named after him, the primary school as well. Even the | :14:50. | :14:56.
street names. This 17th century manor house sits on top of the | :14:56. | :15:00.
House of Bruce. Underneath are to the foundations and underneath that, | :15:00. | :15:05.
the medieval home of Robert the Bruce. It is a section of history | :15:05. | :15:09.
that many Scots will know about. But historians are keen to learn | :15:09. | :15:16.
more about him and his life. This is a 14th century document making | :15:16. | :15:21.
reference to the land by Robert the Bruce. These Latin papers of the | :15:21. | :15:27.
oldest papers the council has an date back to before he defeated the | :15:27. | :15:32.
English 700 years ago. We are looking for greater and greater | :15:33. | :15:36.
evidence of what beat standing here of Robert the Bruce was. We are | :15:36. | :15:42.
very proud of our connections in Scotland. But this is what | :15:42. | :15:47.
Tottenham's more famous for today. The riots started here and spread | :15:47. | :15:55.
to many cities. Not surprisingly, it is an image that this north- | :15:55. | :15:58.
London council is keen to shed. Local people do not know enough | :15:58. | :16:02.
about Robert the Bruce. We are proud about the links with one of | :16:02. | :16:06.
the most important figures in history. We are hoping that we can | :16:06. | :16:12.
get more information through this appeal. We have a proud heritage in | :16:12. | :16:16.
Tottenham and any visitors from Scotland will get a warm welcome. | :16:16. | :16:24.
This place has a special position in history. Visitors at the | :16:24. | :16:33.
medieval church, two... Robert the Bruce had to give up his land when | :16:33. | :16:38.
he ascended the throne. While his reign is -- in Scotland is well- | :16:38. | :16:41.
documented, his days in England will be lost in time. | :16:41. | :16:44.
The Scottish Labour Party is calling for new measures to be | :16:44. | :16:46.
introduced to speed up the prosecution of domestic abusers. | :16:46. | :16:49.
Police in Scotland dealt with 52,000 incidents last year, but | :16:49. | :16:53.
fewer than half were referred to prosecutors. Labour wants dedicated | :16:53. | :16:56.
courts to be set-up and for police forces to have specialist units to | :16:56. | :16:58.
train and advise colleagues.$$NEWLINE A greyhound | :16:58. | :17:01.
rescue charity says there's been a fall in the number of dogs being | :17:01. | :17:06.
mistreated after they've been retired from racing. The sport | :17:06. | :17:09.
gained an unwanted reputation for the way it sometimes discarded the | :17:09. | :17:15.
animals. But in the 10 years since it was created, Dumfriesshire | :17:15. | :17:18.
Greyhound Rescue has found new owners for more than 750 dogs, | :17:18. | :17:21.
which otherwise might have been abandoned or even destroyed. Willie | :17:21. | :17:31.
:17:31. | :17:37. | ||
They may be docks for all seasons, but A-grade and's racing life is | :17:37. | :17:44.
very short. When it is over, deep scrapheap beckons. We get | :17:44. | :17:50.
greyhounds between the ages of two and five. They might not be any | :17:50. | :17:55.
good so they would want to move the dog on and get another one in. | :17:55. | :17:58.
Between two and five, they might pick up a small injury or lose the | :17:58. | :18:04.
incentive to run. At five, it is too old. Docks were often disposed | :18:04. | :18:11.
of, dead or alive, in shockingly cruel ways. It prompted a | :18:11. | :18:18.
parliamentary inquiry. Now, greyhound racing is said to have | :18:18. | :18:23.
cleaned up its act. Most unwanted animals are channelled towards | :18:23. | :18:26.
rescue groups will stop cases of mistreatment of more rare than they | :18:26. | :18:32.
were. But it does happen. This is a disabled dog who arrived here to | :18:32. | :18:37.
0.5 years ago. She had a major accident on the track somewhere, we | :18:37. | :18:44.
believe. The owner did not pay her any attention. She was sewn up | :18:44. | :18:49.
badly. Her leg has now fused, but she runs extremely well and she | :18:49. | :18:53.
really enjoys life. She is a great companion forced got contrary to | :18:53. | :18:58.
popular belief, greyhounds do not need much exercise, are docile and | :18:58. | :19:05.
affection it, and make ideal family pets. But supply continues to | :19:05. | :19:08.
outstrip demand and the economic climate is not helping. 10 years | :19:08. | :19:14.
ago, this man had not earned a greyhound. Now he has many. He is | :19:14. | :19:19.
so devoted that he has even the Home himself to a more dog friendly | :19:19. | :19:22.
house. Well done. | :19:22. | :19:25.
A happy end to a sporting life for some greyhounds. Now with a round | :19:25. | :19:27.
up of current sporting events, here's David. | :19:27. | :19:34.
Hearts have until Wednesday next week to pay their players. After | :19:34. | :19:37.
talks between Edinburgh club, the Scottish Premier League and the | :19:37. | :19:40.
players union it's been decided Hearts must make a payment to their | :19:40. | :19:50.
:19:50. | :19:53. | ||
players by the 11th of January, or else! Jonathan Sutherland reports. | :19:53. | :19:58.
After months of payment problems at Hearts, today de SPL decided it was | :19:58. | :20:03.
time to get tough. The December salaries, which remain unpaid, must | :20:03. | :20:09.
be paid by Wednesday 11th January. There will be interest awarded on | :20:09. | :20:13.
all sums overdue. Costs and expenses have also been awarded | :20:13. | :20:20.
against the club at both the claimants cost and the SPL cost. | :20:20. | :20:25.
Salaries must be paid in full by 16th genu forced up it seems like | :20:25. | :20:31.
strong action, was it the best outcome you hoped for? We wanted to | :20:31. | :20:37.
ensure that members were paid on time. Any further action should | :20:37. | :20:42.
comply with the order made by the SPL. Then, later this afternoon, | :20:42. | :20:46.
Hearts announced they had paid their players their outstanding | :20:46. | :20:52.
December wages. The next payment deadline they must now need is the | :20:52. | :20:55.
16th of genuine. Should they miss the deadline, a number of sanctions | :20:55. | :21:03.
will be available to be SPL. They could impose a financial penalty or | :21:03. | :21:08.
deduct points. Ultimately they could decide to chop Hearts out of | :21:08. | :21:13.
the league altogether, but that is highly unlikely. Three wins in a | :21:13. | :21:20.
draw -- and a draw, they are in fine fettle. At the moment, it is a | :21:20. | :21:22.
case of wait and see. Cutting edge technology could help | :21:22. | :21:25.
one Scottish Olympic hopeful to make it to London 2012. Hammer | :21:25. | :21:28.
thrower Andy Frost has been using Sport Scotland's biometric analysis | :21:28. | :21:32.
facility to help him recover from injury. It's also given him ways to | :21:32. | :21:34.
improve his technique. Our Olympics correspondent Kheredine Idessane | :21:35. | :21:44.
:21:45. | :21:56. | ||
Lit up like a Christmas tree. Andy Frost is taking advantage of a new | :21:56. | :22:00.
biometric analysis facility, the first of its kind in Scotland. | :22:00. | :22:04.
Special sensors are stuck to his body and linked to 10 cameras, | :22:04. | :22:08.
allowing his every movement to be monitored and recorded. We have the | :22:08. | :22:11.
court notes of each of these white markers and can look at them from | :22:11. | :22:16.
any angle. If you want to look at it from the back and the side, the | :22:16. | :22:23.
top, you can. We can also zoom in it. This allows the physiotherapist | :22:23. | :22:28.
to see how the movement changes with the Teague. In competition, | :22:28. | :22:33.
when it fatigue sets in, they might change that technique. It means | :22:33. | :22:36.
when he is growing for real in the summer, the Hammer should be going | :22:36. | :22:42.
out further than ever. I'm hoping I can improve my technique sightly | :22:42. | :22:47.
and get the qualifying distance for London. I would love to make the | :22:47. | :22:50.
final down there, that would be a great achievement. An English man | :22:50. | :22:56.
has not done that the years. Hopefully I can get a medal in 2014 | :22:56. | :23:02.
as well. The technology is helping and the recover more officially | :23:02. | :23:06.
from injury. Those looking after him know there are performance | :23:06. | :23:10.
benefits as well. We will also be looking at some of the drills he | :23:10. | :23:14.
will do which relate directly to this growing, like the way he moves, | :23:14. | :23:19.
and that will be able to inform what we do with him in terms of the | :23:19. | :23:23.
bath -- the hat and coaching and the strength and conditioning. | :23:23. | :23:29.
he does make the Olympic qualifying distance, he will say a big thank- | :23:29. | :23:32.
you to his little computerised helper. | :23:32. | :23:36.
We could all do with one of those! Andy Murray's through to the last | :23:36. | :23:39.
eight of the Brisbane international tennis as his preparations for the | :23:39. | :23:42.
Australian Open continue. The world number four lost the first set of | :23:42. | :23:45.
his match against Luxembourg's Gilles Muller 4-6. And he needed a | :23:45. | :23:48.
tie break to take the second 7-6. However Murray won the third set | :23:48. | :23:50.
convincingly 6-0.$$NEWLINE Just a reminder that our money expert | :23:50. | :23:59.
Fergus Muirhead returns next He always keeps us on tenterhooks | :23:59. | :24:05.
and then does it right at the end. Thank you, David. | :24:05. | :24:13.
The weather in Australia must be Yesterday it was the wind and to | :24:13. | :24:20.
Roman Catholic Archbishop of Westminster it was the rain. The | :24:20. | :24:26.
rain is piling its way across the country. Just one or two areas | :24:26. | :24:31.
stayed dry. Into this evening, more rain to come and a bit more wind, | :24:31. | :24:35.
particularly in the southern half of Scotland. Some gale force winds | :24:35. | :24:39.
as possible. Yellow warning in force in the West because of the | :24:39. | :24:45.
winds. Some gusts the tonight of around 70 miles an hour, not the | :24:45. | :24:49.
strongest. Gales in the south-west lasting throughout the night until | :24:49. | :24:54.
tomorrow morning. Severe gales in exposed areas. Further north, | :24:54. | :24:57.
showers working their way in and they will be wintry over the higher | :24:57. | :25:02.
ground. Temperatures will be between two and three degrees, | :25:02. | :25:06.
milder with stronger winds. Tomorrow starts showery, in the | :25:06. | :25:11.
West and in the north, but into the afternoon, the showers stayed away | :25:11. | :25:15.
and you will see some sunshine. Look at the map, it is lit up | :25:15. | :25:19.
golden and we have not seen that for a while. Some showers in two | :25:19. | :25:23.
parts of Strathclyde and the southern half of the country, but | :25:23. | :25:28.
by mid-afternoon, not too bad. Some wind around, less in the south-west | :25:28. | :25:31.
compared to the morning and temperatures around six or seven | :25:31. | :25:39.
degrees. Cooler in the North with some sunshine and strong winds. | :25:39. | :25:42.
Into the second half of the afternoon and evening, the Shire -- | :25:42. | :25:49.
the showers die away with a dry and clear night. Friday, to finish of | :25:49. | :25:54.
the week, a small ridge of high pressure is squeezed out when the | :25:54. | :25:58.
steer weather fronts work their way in. More cloud and rain to follow. | :25:58. | :26:03.
It starts OK on Friday, but the cloud will work its way in with the | :26:03. | :26:08.
rain. Moderate, nothing like today, and the winds will pick up. Highs | :26:08. | :26:13.
of nine degrees. This evening, the rain eases, but winds will will be | :26:13. | :26:23.
:26:23. | :26:28. | ||
strong in the south. Now, just before 7pm, a summary of | :26:28. | :26:31.
tonight's top stories. The men who murdered Stephen Lawrence are | :26:31. | :26:33.
jailed and told their crime scarred the conscience of nation. Gary | :26:33. | :26:37.
Dobson will serve at least 15 years and David Norris will be behind | :26:37. | :26:40.
bars for a minimum of 14 years. Stephen Lawrence was stabbed to | :26:40. | :26:43.
death by a racist gang. It's taken nearly 19 years for his family to | :26:43. | :26:45.
get justice. More details have emerged about the | :26:45. | :26:48.
body of a woman found on the Queen's Sandringham Estate on New | :26:48. | :26:51.
Year's Day. Police say she is young and white, probably aged between 15 | :26:51. | :26:56.
and 23 years old. That's all from us for now. I'm | :26:56. | :26:59.
back with the late news round up just before 10:30pm. Until then, | :26:59. | :27:02. |
