Tonight on your national news programme: | :00:13. | :00:16.
Putting it to the test - the election watchdog gets the Scottish | :00:16. | :00:18.
Government's preferred question to ask voters in the independence | :00:19. | :00:21.
referendum, but is it a fair question? | :00:22. | :00:25.
It was a horrific attack that shocked the nation. Now a man | :00:25. | :00:29.
pleads guilty to the attempted murder of a Lanarkshire grandmother. | :00:29. | :00:32.
Also tonight, one Dutch woman's devotion to the memory of a Scots | :00:32. | :00:42.
:00:42. | :00:45. | ||
soldier killed in the Second World War, a man she had never met. | :00:45. | :00:49.
just found it a very natural thing to do because he fought for our | :00:49. | :00:52.
freedom. And can Scotland make history by | :00:52. | :00:55.
beating the might of the All Blacks at a sold-out Murrayfield on | :00:55. | :01:03.
Good evening. The question the Scottish Government wants to put to | :01:03. | :01:06.
voters in the independence referendum has been given to the | :01:06. | :01:10.
Electoral Commission, to be tested for fairness. It is, "Do you agree | :01:10. | :01:13.
that Scotland should be an independent country?" The Yes | :01:13. | :01:17.
campaign says the wording is fair, but the No campaign believes it is | :01:17. | :01:24.
skewed. Here's our political correspondent, Raymond Buchanan. | :01:24. | :01:28.
In two years' time, the people of Scotland will be asked to decide | :01:28. | :01:32.
their constitutional future. It will be one of the most important | :01:32. | :01:36.
questions in this nation's long history. The Scottish Government | :01:36. | :01:46.
:01:46. | :01:47. | ||
gets to choose the words and here It will be for the Electoral | :01:47. | :01:49.
Commission decided that as a reasonable way to decide Scotland's | :01:49. | :01:56.
future. Today, they started to work it out. They question has to be | :01:56. | :02:01.
easy to understand, unambiguous, should not lead voters to one | :02:01. | :02:03.
conclusion or and other and should be written in straightforward, | :02:03. | :02:08.
everyday language that people know what they are voting for. One way | :02:08. | :02:13.
to establish that is by asking the public for their view of the | :02:13. | :02:19.
question. In Glasgow, I found the over-fifties show this is the most | :02:19. | :02:23.
generation likely to vote, so what do they make of the Scottish | :02:23. | :02:31.
Government's preferred wording? it is to cut and dried. People | :02:31. | :02:35.
might not have thought a practiced at -- thought through the | :02:35. | :02:38.
practicalities affecting them in the future. It is probably | :02:38. | :02:44.
basically fair because I cannot see yes or no it. I would accept that. | :02:44. | :02:50.
Both campaigns on the referendum are being led by over 50s, too. | :02:50. | :02:55.
Those opposed to independence say it is wrong for the SNP-dominated | :02:55. | :02:59.
Parliament to decide the final wording. They think the Electoral | :02:59. | :03:02.
Commission should not just advise but actually set the question. | :03:02. | :03:10.
must be -- I think most people who looked at it would think it is | :03:10. | :03:15.
skewed. You cannot have the SNP be -- SNP being both a player and the | :03:15. | :03:20.
referee. I have to abide by the decision of the Electoral | :03:20. | :03:24.
Commission, and so should they. question was suggested by the | :03:24. | :03:28.
opposition parties so the difference between, do you think | :03:28. | :03:38.
Scotland should be an independent country, yes or no, or should | :03:38. | :03:44.
Scotland be a separate country, yes or no, que there's are not much in | :03:44. | :03:52.
it. Tough the ultimate decision over Scotland's future will be for | :03:52. | :03:58.
its people. Eight months ago, a horrific attack | :03:58. | :04:01.
on an elderly woman left her with two broken arms, a fractured skull | :04:01. | :04:05.
and deep slash wounds to her face. Today, a man admitted attempting to | :04:05. | :04:08.
murder 76-year-old Mary Coulter after breaking into her home at | :04:08. | :04:13.
Overtown in North Lanarkshire. The High Court in Glasgow heard that | :04:13. | :04:16.
32-year-old Derek Clark had carried out the attack as he and two other | :04:16. | :04:22.
men searched the house for Mrs Coulter's son. You may find some of | :04:22. | :04:31.
the pictures in Laura Bicker's report disturbing. | :04:31. | :04:35.
76-year-old Marray was lucky to escape with her life. She had two | :04:35. | :04:42.
broken arms, a fractured skull,/Winster her face. She had to | :04:42. | :04:47.
undergo constructive surgery and is still badly disfigured. -- wounds | :04:47. | :04:55.
to her face. Mum, she is a defenceless, elderly woman who has | :04:55. | :05:00.
never heard any body. Now she is severely scarred for the rest of | :05:00. | :05:08.
her life. We cannot understand why any body which carried out this | :05:08. | :05:14.
cowardly attack. 32-year-old Derek Clark admitted attempting to murder | :05:15. | :05:20.
the grand manner. He was with a 27- year-old friend and another man, | :05:20. | :05:25.
aged 29, who cannot be named for legal reasons. The pair have | :05:25. | :05:30.
pleaded guilty to conspiring to inflict injury on Mary's son, | :05:30. | :05:38.
Ronnie. These men were charged in 1998 with the murder of the Asian | :05:39. | :05:45.
waiter. They were both acquitted. Police at the time of Mary's attack | :05:45. | :05:48.
believed the two were unrelated, although they also believe the | :05:48. | :05:51.
house had been targeted and the grandmother was not the intended | :05:51. | :05:57.
victim. We now know the gang was searching for her son. This attack | :05:57. | :06:01.
was brittle and savage. It has left a grandmother so traumatised she | :06:01. | :06:09.
can no longer live alone at her home. If for and we are joined by | :06:09. | :06:13.
that -- and we were joined by Laura at the High Court. | :06:13. | :06:18.
Has there been any reaction from the family? Not yet. They say they | :06:18. | :06:22.
will wait until after sentencing before giving any interviews but | :06:22. | :06:27.
this crime did not just to shock people living near Mary's home town. | :06:27. | :06:31.
It shocked the entire country. And within the last half-an-hour, | :06:32. | :06:35.
Strathclyde Police have issued a statement and in it, they describe | :06:35. | :06:40.
the level of violence used by Derek Clark as breathtaking. They say it | :06:40. | :06:45.
is impossible to understand the mind set of such a person and they | :06:45. | :06:55.
:06:55. | :06:55. | ||
hope that he guilty plea today will give some comfort to Mary's family. | :06:55. | :06:57.
Thank you. You're watching Reporting Scotland | :06:58. | :07:01.
from the BBC. Still to come on the programme tonight, "we will stay in | :07:01. | :07:05.
business". A Hearts director on why he's confident the club can stay | :07:05. | :07:08.
afloat. And we take a look at a new | :07:08. | :07:14.
exhibition celebrating Scotland's role in carpet-making. | :07:14. | :07:17.
In sport, can our national rugby team do what none of their | :07:17. | :07:20.
predecessors have done by beating the All Blacks? | :07:20. | :07:23.
And I've been speaking to a living Scottish football legend about who | :07:23. | :07:31.
should and maybe shouldn't be the A retired paratrooper who served in | :07:31. | :07:34.
the Falklands and Northern Ireland has told a court that he thinks | :07:34. | :07:38.
every day about a tragedy in which a teenage cadet died. Today, Major | :07:38. | :07:41.
George McCallum pleaded guilty to breaching health and safety laws on | :07:41. | :07:46.
a training expedition in the Western Isles. But the family of | :07:46. | :07:49.
Kaylee McIntosh say more people should now be facing charges, as | :07:49. | :07:59.
:07:59. | :08:00. | ||
Craig Anderson reports. 14-year-old Kaylee McIntosh was an | :08:00. | :08:04.
enthusiastic Army cadet. She joined the force at 12 years old and in | :08:04. | :08:09.
2007 was taken to we training camp in the Western Isles. But the boat | :08:09. | :08:13.
trip went go horribly wrong with the boat capsizing, trapping the | :08:13. | :08:16.
teenager underneath. Nobody realised from hour-and-a-half that | :08:16. | :08:21.
she was missing and today, Major George McCallum came to court to | :08:21. | :08:29.
admit charges under the health and safety work at. If in litigation, | :08:29. | :08:35.
the lawyer said he had expressed heartfelt remorse. He said this has | :08:35. | :08:39.
had and -- a bigger effect on me personally than events of war. I | :08:39. | :08:44.
think about it every day. The catalogue of mistakes made that day | :08:44. | :08:48.
scarcely believable. The boat was overloaded, the cadets were issued | :08:48. | :08:52.
with the wrong life jackets. Instructors could not even tell the | :08:52. | :08:56.
coastguard where they were. And while one a man may have been | :08:56. | :08:59.
prosecuted and played guilty, Kaylee McIntosh's parents want to | :08:59. | :09:03.
see others in charge of those events that day in the dock. They | :09:03. | :09:06.
are family views this as one further step on the road to what | :09:06. | :09:11.
they want to see, which is comprehensive, not a partial, | :09:11. | :09:14.
justice for the family. Well as they welcome today's proceedings | :09:14. | :09:19.
and the guilty plea, they want to know what is happening, if anything, | :09:19. | :09:23.
in respect of proceedings against other parties. In deferring | :09:24. | :09:27.
sentencing, the judge said he wanted time to consider the | :09:27. | :09:32.
accused's actions or lack of them in context of a wider picture. In | :09:32. | :09:36.
short, the failings of other officers on that day or more | :09:36. | :09:40.
fundamental flaws in safety procedures. Major George McCallum | :09:40. | :09:45.
will be sentenced later this month. Two men have been sentenced to life | :09:45. | :09:48.
in prison for kicking another man to death outside his Glasgow home. | :09:48. | :09:52.
Adel Ishaq and Asif Rehman will each serve a minimum of 16 years in | :09:52. | :09:56.
prison for the murder of William McKeeney in Pollokshields. He was | :09:56. | :09:59.
killed in January as he returned to his home on the south side of the | :09:59. | :10:03.
city. Passing sentence, the judge, Lord Uist, told the pair they | :10:03. | :10:12.
constitute a serious danger to the public. | :10:12. | :10:15.
In the past 48 hours, Hearts have raised over 100,000 through | :10:15. | :10:18.
selling shares and tickets to matches in their bid to avoid being | :10:18. | :10:21.
liquidated next week. However, one club director has told BBC Scotland | :10:21. | :10:24.
that Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs, who have issued a winding- | :10:24. | :10:27.
up notice, are not willing to reach a compromise deal. Brian McLauchlin | :10:27. | :10:32.
has more. The Rams director asking fans to | :10:32. | :10:39.
dig deep. However, HMRC are saying there is no deal on the table over | :10:39. | :10:44.
the 450,000 that must be paid next week. That is what they said, you | :10:44. | :10:48.
know. And I think they are treating this situation on really wrongly. | :10:48. | :10:53.
It is wrong to treat it like that because this is not just the usual | :10:53. | :10:58.
business. It is a club, an institution. It means a lot to the | :10:58. | :11:02.
people here in Edinburgh and the country. The winding-up order | :11:02. | :11:06.
issued a Hearts on Wednesday it is not the only problem the club has. | :11:06. | :11:10.
They are already in debt to the tune of 23 billion and the | :11:10. | :11:20.
:11:20. | :11:20. | ||
majority of the Act, from the club's owner. -- 23 million. Next | :11:20. | :11:25.
Friday, they are due to pay the players' salaries but for the past | :11:25. | :11:30.
two months, many of those have been made. Six months ago, hogs fans | :11:30. | :11:35.
were rejoicing after a famous club victory over their rivals, City. | :11:35. | :11:39.
Now they are being asked to dig into their pockets. Other ways they | :11:39. | :11:49.
:11:49. | :11:50. | ||
can forget -- otherwise they can forget the future. This afternoon, | :11:51. | :11:56.
a meeting was held with the players. Everybody at the club is said to be | :11:56. | :12:00.
fully supportive of their quest to stay alive. We had a good meeting. | :12:00. | :12:05.
I understand we have understanding and there his understanding with | :12:05. | :12:09.
all the staff in the club. Everybody is working hard and | :12:10. | :12:15.
seeing this commitment from people give say good feeling and I am | :12:15. | :12:20.
really confident that we will get through it. The Hearts players are | :12:20. | :12:24.
now off to Inverness for tomorrow's lunchtime fixture. In seven days' | :12:24. | :12:32.
time, they must be 450,000 -- they must find 450,000. Otherwise, the | :12:32. | :12:35.
club faces oblivion. Now, let's have a look at other | :12:35. | :12:41.
news from around the country this Friday. | :12:41. | :12:47.
A former Royal Marine who caused an explosion at this blocker in Dundee | :12:47. | :12:52.
has been sentenced to prison. The jury heard he detonated two bombs | :12:52. | :12:56.
earlier this year. He admitted causing explosions. | :12:56. | :12:59.
Continuing concerns by conservationists about the other | :12:59. | :13:05.
skate fish in Scottish waters. The Conservation Network has had to go | :13:05. | :13:09.
out again this year to see how many they can catch. After being weighed | :13:09. | :13:15.
and measured, they were tagged and released. There has been a fair | :13:15. | :13:18.
amount of fresh fish being caught but it is nothing compared to 20 | :13:18. | :13:24.
years ago, when you could catch 50 to 60, whereas nowadays, you are | :13:24. | :13:30.
lucky to catch three or four. A 1.5 million is to be invested in | :13:30. | :13:33.
the Cairngorms Borrie in Abbey more, which will see the business opening | :13:33. | :13:38.
its own bottle plant. Danny Alexander announced the expansion | :13:38. | :13:42.
at a visit to the business today. He also sampled the company's | :13:42. | :13:52.
:13:52. | :13:55. | ||
latest beer, Ginger Ryan Day and, - - Ginger Rodent. | :13:55. | :14:01.
Seven new jobs are to be brought to the locker area of Lewis. The salt | :14:01. | :14:05.
business is the only one of its kind in Scotland and says it has | :14:05. | :14:09.
seen a surge in demand. And Maggie's Cancer support Centre | :14:09. | :14:13.
in Glasgow has picked up a prestigious architectural award. | :14:13. | :14:16.
The Royal incorporation of Architects in Scotland have given | :14:16. | :14:20.
it the best building award. Judges described it as an extraordinary | :14:20. | :14:25.
building, a place of calm, simultaneously welcoming and open. | :14:25. | :14:28.
And there are more stories from your area and the latest news from | :14:28. | :14:38.

around the country 24 hours a day Ahead of Armistice Day yesterday we | :14:41. | :14:46.
had a story about the sacrifice made by Scottish soldiers in the | :14:46. | :14:53.
liberation of the Netherlands. Today, in the second report from | :14:53. | :14:58.
there, we trace the story of one soldier who died in that operation | :14:58. | :15:04.
and a woman's lifetime of devotion to his grave. Three times every | :15:04. | :15:10.
year, tawny has come to this cemetery to place flowers at the | :15:10. | :15:17.
grave of a loved one. As deal as a brother, but until now, only a name | :15:17. | :15:24.

I am grateful for the Scottish soldiers who helped liberate my | :16:17. | :16:21.
part of the country. I am grateful that after all these years I can | :16:21. | :16:28.
play my own part in bringing the story to life. | :16:28. | :16:33.
I am very content that at the end of my life we know more about | :16:33. | :16:39.

At 90 years old, she knows her visits are numbered. But when the | :17:09. | :17:13.
time comes, children and grandchildren can take a proper | :17:13. | :17:22.
care of Harold's grave. There is an important match on at | :17:22. | :17:27.
Murrayfield on Sunday. Let's look ahead to that along with the rest | :17:27. | :17:31.
of the sport. Scotland's rugby players will attempt to achieve | :17:32. | :17:36.
something the national team has never achieved before - defeating | :17:36. | :17:42.
the All Blacks. They do not come any tougher than the world | :17:42. | :17:49.
champions. Over the years we have not done too badly on the world | :17:49. | :17:54.
stage. Invented the telephone, television, even cloned sheep. But | :17:54. | :17:59.
there is one thing we have not managed to achieve. Defeating the | :17:59. | :18:09.
:18:09. | :18:10. | ||
All Blacks. We have been attempting for 107 years. Without success. | :18:10. | :18:15.
There is no doubt it is a massive challenge. They are the world | :18:15. | :18:20.
champions and have not lost for 16 or 17 games. But at the end of the | :18:21. | :18:30.
:18:31. | :18:32. | ||
day it comes down to 15 against 15. Two Here's a cocoa -- two years ago | :18:32. | :18:37.
Scotland were blown away by the All Blacks. | :18:37. | :18:45.
I don't think about it much myself. History and All Blacks brilliance | :18:45. | :18:50.
is all against Scotland this weekend. But perhaps we have a | :18:50. | :18:55.
secret weapon. I have trimmed it a few times but | :18:55. | :19:00.
this is about three months now. There are lots of strong bearded | :19:00. | :19:09.
men in history, like King this can,. Perhaps it will carry me! | :19:09. | :19:13.
Otherwise, the search for the historic Scottish achievement will | :19:13. | :19:19.
go on. Celtic have appointed a Gaelic | :19:19. | :19:24.
football coach to their staff. Jimmy McGuinness turned Donegal | :19:24. | :19:30.
into All-Ireland champions. He has been brought in to develop young | :19:30. | :19:33.
players. Still all smiles at Celtic Park after the victory over | :19:33. | :19:39.
