fallout from a BBC investigation into abuse at a Highland boarding

:00:19.:00:22.

school. Its former headmaster, who's accused of covering up the scandal,

:00:22.:00:26.

resigns from a role at Oxford University. Tonight there are calls

:00:26.:00:36.

for further investigation. I think there should be an independent

:00:36.:00:40.

enquiry and that should start as soon as possible so that those who

:00:40.:00:43.

may consider speaking have the confidence they will be listened to.

:00:43.:00:46.

Also in the programme. The Scottish teenager arrested for drug

:00:46.:00:49.

trafficking in Peru says she only did it because a gang forced her at

:00:49.:00:56.

gunpoint. We are Wembley Stadium in the

:00:56.:00:59.

countdown to the first Scotland against England match of the

:00:59.:01:04.

century. While the tartan army is on the march hoping that the game can

:01:04.:01:12.

become a regular fixture. It is pretty positive and very

:01:12.:01:18.

optimistic. We are looking forward to it. We are on a roll and going to

:01:18.:01:20.

beat them. We should do it more often.

:01:20.:01:24.

A former headmaster of a Catholic boarding school in the Highlands at

:01:24.:01:27.

the centre of an abuse scandal has resigned from a role with Oxford

:01:27.:01:30.

University. Father Francis Davidson's decision follows a BBC

:01:30.:01:33.

Scotland investigation which found evidence of abuse at the Fort

:01:33.:01:36.

Augustus Abbey School near Inverness. Here's our investigations

:01:36.:01:46.
:01:46.:01:48.

correspondent Mark Daly. Dozens of new victims claiming

:01:48.:01:52.

physical and sexual abuse at Fort Augustus Abbey have come forward

:01:52.:02:01.

raising fears that a paedophile ring was in operation. One of those

:02:01.:02:04.

involved was Father Alexander confronted by the BBC in Sydney over

:02:04.:02:11.

claims he molested a 14-year-old pupil and that Francis Davidson

:02:11.:02:17.

covered up the allegations and sent him away. Father Davidson went on to

:02:17.:02:22.

have a glittering academic career grand has been the religious

:02:22.:02:29.

superior that this Benedictine College since 2012. Now a second

:02:29.:02:34.

pupil has come forward alleging that while he was headmaster, Francis

:02:34.:02:39.

Davidson covered up allegations of child sex abuse. Hugh Kennedy

:02:39.:02:44.

attended the school in the 1970s and was groomed and sexually abused by

:02:44.:02:54.
:02:54.:02:56.

teachers. He would play with me and would make me do certain things to

:02:56.:03:04.

him. I told father Davidson, who was the headmaster. But instead of

:03:04.:03:09.

calling the police, he was allowed to visit his stepmother to protest

:03:09.:03:19.
:03:19.:03:21.

is innocence. He convinced her this a nonstory and from there I was sent

:03:21.:03:29.

back to Fort Augustus to be subjected to further abuse. We put

:03:29.:03:33.

this to father Davidson on Monday and by 10am this morning he had

:03:33.:03:43.
:03:43.:04:05.

resigned from his post at Oxford cover-ups concerning 13 monks over

:04:05.:04:11.

five decades. Police Scotland is investigating but there are no calls

:04:11.:04:18.

for an independent public inquiry. What is absolutely clear is that the

:04:18.:04:23.

Catholic church cannot investigate itself. Over decades, they appear to

:04:23.:04:30.

be more interested in protecting their own reputation than children.

:04:30.:04:34.

The independent enquiry should start as soon as possible so those who may

:04:34.:04:41.

consider speaking have confidence they will be listened to seriously.

:04:41.:04:47.

A spokesman stops short of endorsing a full enquiry but said it would

:04:47.:04:53.

support any moves to help victims and prevent future reviews.

:04:53.:04:56.

-- abuse. The father of a teenager from Lenzie

:04:56.:05:00.

accused trafficking 1.5 mllion of cocaine has flown to Peru to try to

:05:00.:05:03.

see her. 19-year-old Melissa Reid and her friend Michaella McCollum

:05:03.:05:06.

from Northern Ireland say they were forced at gunpoint to carry the

:05:06.:05:16.

drugs. Aileen Clarke has the latest. Melissa Reid and Michaela McCollum

:05:16.:05:20.

at the police station where they are currently being held. They say they

:05:20.:05:25.

were forced into carrying drugs back from Beirut, frightened that they

:05:25.:05:32.

and their families would be targeted. -- Peru. They were not

:05:32.:05:38.

smuggling for delete, they were smuggling for their lives. They

:05:38.:05:45.

genuinely felt their lives were in danger. They felt the men carrying

:05:45.:05:52.

out the kidnapping would carry out their threats. Melissa said she was

:05:52.:05:58.

picked up by a man who handed her over to members of the drugs cartel.

:05:58.:06:04.

She says she was taken to my bread and then onto Majorca were Michaela

:06:04.:06:09.

who she had not met before joined her. They were taken back to Madrid

:06:09.:06:18.

and then flew on to Peru. When flying back, when questioned, this

:06:18.:06:28.
:06:28.:06:29.

was the response. I did not know it contained drugs. It now appears they

:06:29.:06:32.

were well aware of what was concealed but were too terrified to

:06:32.:06:39.

do anything about it. The girls are said to be pretty stoic about their

:06:39.:06:45.

future although the hearing has been pushed back until next week. They

:06:45.:06:53.

freely admit it but when I spoke to them, they were determined to get

:06:53.:06:59.

through this together. While getting support, the Irish community has

:06:59.:07:07.

kept in touch with them. They are in much better spirits than before and

:07:07.:07:16.

are looking forward to some family members arriving. Melissa Reid will

:07:16.:07:21.

be 20 on Friday. She knows it is unlikely she will spend her birthday

:07:21.:07:28.

with her family or be able to go to her brother's wedding next year. The

:07:28.:07:33.

trial may not even be under next year and they are only two of around

:07:33.:07:36.

15 foreigners got to have been arrested on drug smuggling charges

:07:36.:07:41.

in the last week in Lima. You're watching Reporting Scotland

:07:41.:07:45.

from the BBC. Still to come on the programme. The RAF say new fighter

:07:45.:07:47.

planes mean their Lossiemouth airbase's future is secure for 30

:07:47.:07:49.

years. And we're with the tartan army in

:07:50.:07:52.

central London ahead of tonight's friendly between England and

:07:52.:07:56.

Scotland at Wembley. Tonight's sport comes from Wembley

:07:56.:08:00.

Stadium ahead of the first match between Scotland and England for 14

:08:00.:08:03.

years. We'll hear from players, both managers, and a true Scotland

:08:03.:08:08.

legend. And I'll take a nostalgic look back at some classic matches

:08:08.:08:15.

from the past. It'll bring a tear to a glass eye.

:08:15.:08:19.

The number of Scots in work has risen by 13,000, according to the

:08:19.:08:22.

latest figures. As we've been reporting this week, that's another

:08:22.:08:26.

sign that the economy is showing signs of turning the corner. Our

:08:26.:08:31.

business and economy editor, Douglas Fraser, reports.

:08:31.:08:35.

This is the bit of the economy that hits closest to home. So here's good

:08:35.:08:39.

news: the number of Scots in work between April and June was up by

:08:39.:08:43.

13,000, the highest number of jobs in more than four years. The number

:08:43.:08:46.

of Scots seeking work during those months, down by a modest 1000 to

:08:46.:08:50.

198,000, while more people are coming into the workforce to pick up

:08:50.:08:57.

on these opportunities. That takes the Scots unemployment rate to 7.2%.

:08:57.:09:02.

The UK, with a fall of 4000 in those seeking work, is at 7.8%. So what's

:09:02.:09:06.

behind these headline figures? This week, in addition to jobs and

:09:06.:09:08.

retail, we've got updates on Scottish business confidence, new

:09:08.:09:11.

orders, the housing market, airport passengers up, and inflation's down

:09:11.:09:15.

a bit. Casualties of the great downturn are using creative powers

:09:15.:09:20.

to fight back which can be difficult when you're not so young. After

:09:20.:09:24.

losing her job in manufacturing, she found it difficult to find a job but

:09:24.:09:32.

has set up a business selling her skills for therapy. If you have the

:09:32.:09:36.

patience and determination, there's nothing that can stop you. If one

:09:36.:09:41.

idea does not stop you move onto something else. Many people remain

:09:41.:09:44.

in temporarily or part-time jobs and wants permanent and still claim

:09:44.:09:49.

once. Many are not using the skills they want and then there's squeezed

:09:49.:09:59.
:09:59.:10:01.

pay. The 42nd month of people being unable to provide full-time

:10:01.:10:07.

positions. But that is not such a squeeze on spending as it has been.

:10:07.:10:11.

Warm weather being one of the strong reasons for good retail figures last

:10:11.:10:20.

month, and success at Wimbledon was also good news. There is more

:10:20.:10:23.

confidence among consumers although not necessarily more money in their

:10:23.:10:29.

wallets. They can feel they spend a bit more. In addition to jobs and

:10:29.:10:36.

retail, we have Scottish business confidence, the housing market,

:10:36.:10:40.

airport passengers up and inflation down a bit. So all these signs are

:10:40.:10:43.

looking at least slightly better. The economy may now be turning the

:10:43.:10:46.

corner. But the concerns remain about the quality of jobs, and

:10:46.:10:48.

because of those squeezed household budgets, this doesn't look

:10:48.:10:51.

sustainable unless business invests more, and exports rise too.

:10:51.:10:54.

Meanwhile, on that foreign front, there's some more good news today: a

:10:54.:10:58.

forecast of faster growth in sales of the things we make here, while

:10:58.:11:01.

the eurozone, where they buy a lot of them, has come out of recession,

:11:01.:11:08.

at last. A veritable ray of sunshine!

:11:08.:11:10.

Thank you. Sauna workers in Edinburgh have criticised police

:11:10.:11:13.

raids on their premises. Six saunas have had their licences suspended.

:11:13.:11:16.

Campaigners for a safer sex trade fear Police Scotland is trying to

:11:16.:11:19.

sweep away the capital's more tolerant approach, and putting

:11:19.:11:26.

women's lives at risk. Morag Kinniburgh reports.

:11:26.:11:31.

For girls are working in this Edinburgh sauna. The charge 60 for

:11:31.:11:38.

half an hour. The sauna owners deny sex goes on in here and what goes on

:11:38.:11:45.

a strictly private. Police raids prompted a wave of protests. One

:11:45.:11:55.
:11:55.:11:59.

warrant, she was told to shut up and wait to be interviewed. Sex saunas

:11:59.:12:07.

have their licences suspended and many intend to appeal. This man has

:12:07.:12:11.

operated saunas in the capital for more than 35 years and fears ending

:12:11.:12:17.

a tolerant approach will force more girls underground into potentially

:12:17.:12:22.

life-threatening situations. generals involved will most probably

:12:22.:12:32.
:12:32.:12:33.

still keep working. -- girls. it becomes very dangerous. The

:12:33.:12:35.

police say they worked to ensure investigations were carried out

:12:35.:12:42.

safely and efficiently. They say they have received no complaints,

:12:42.:12:47.

but campaigners insist they were men are too scared to protest and argue

:12:47.:12:51.

Edinburgh sauna is keep sex workers safer than if they were on the

:12:51.:12:53.

streets. Other stories from across Scotland

:12:53.:12:54.

this Wednesday. Children born to obese and

:12:54.:12:58.

overweight mothers are more likely to die early of heart disease than

:12:58.:13:00.

other children, according to research by Edinburgh and Aberdeen

:13:00.:13:05.

Universities. The findings follow analysis of data from thousands of

:13:05.:13:15.
:13:15.:13:16.

people born in Scotland between 1950 and 1976.

:13:16.:13:21.

It is the direction we expected. The association is quite clear-cut and

:13:21.:13:27.

strong and I think it just highlights the importance of looking

:13:27.:13:31.

at the weight of the mother around child-bearing for the year on health

:13:31.:13:32.

and for the future health of their family.

:13:33.:13:36.

One of the largest mobile cranes in the country has been used in Elgin

:13:36.:13:40.

to lift three giant sections of a new road bridge into place. The 6

:13:40.:13:44.

million crossing is needed to span both the River Lossie and a new

:13:44.:13:47.

relief channel created as part of an 86 million flood prevention scheme

:13:47.:13:51.

for the town. Elgin suffered four serious floods in the 12 years up to

:13:51.:13:55.

2009. The number of dedicated roads police

:13:55.:13:59.

in Aberdeen is to be trebled. It follows an increase in the number of

:13:59.:14:02.

serious accidents in the city in recent months and a trebling of the

:14:03.:14:05.

number of drivers caught speeding. Police Scotland says the increase

:14:05.:14:08.

from five to 15 officers is in response to community feedback

:14:08.:14:17.

demanding a greater police presence on the roads.

:14:17.:14:21.

They are many strands in the operation and we have had a lot of

:14:21.:14:26.

success in the past but one casualty is one too many for Aberdeen city.

Yang Guang was given an edible bamboo sculpture as a present from

his keepers. It is a species of bamboo that he

:14:40.:14:44.

really likes to eat but to ensure he goes all bad and investigates it, we

:14:44.:14:51.

have covered it in honey. There is also Apple and carrot head in

:14:51.:14:54.

amongst it. And there are more stories from your

:14:54.:14:57.

area and all the latest news, 24 hours a day on BBC Scotland's

:14:57.:14:59.

website. The RAF says the Lossiemouth air

:14:59.:15:03.

station can look forward to a guaranteed future of up to 30 years.

:15:03.:15:07.

It comes as the Moray base prepares to welcome the first of its new

:15:07.:15:10.

Typhoon fighter squadrons to replace its ageing Tornadoes. Craig Anderson

:15:10.:15:20.
:15:20.:15:25.

is at the base and can tell us more. There was huge relief year when RAF

:15:25.:15:28.

Lossiemouth was the perceived and the strategic defence and security

:15:28.:15:36.

review, although at the expense of RAF Kinloss. It will become one of

:15:36.:15:44.

only two races in the UK for the new Typhoon fighter bomber. According to

:15:44.:15:50.

the timeline revealed today, that guarantees a life span for RAF

:15:50.:15:55.

Lossiemouth until 2040 and beyond. That guarantee that the Typhoon will

:15:55.:16:05.

be based here and it has many years left yet. Continued and long-term

:16:05.:16:15.
:16:15.:16:18.

employment. Great news for Moray and four RAF Lossiemouth. The defence

:16:19.:16:23.

cuts have still rankled in Scotland and the SNP maintains that the

:16:23.:16:29.

Ministry of Defence has cut far more severely into the defence estate in

:16:29.:16:34.

Scotland than through the rest of the UK. On the one hand it is

:16:34.:16:40.

fantastic it is remaining as an airbase, it was a very damaging

:16:40.:16:46.

decision to impact on RAF lookers. The decision here has been handled

:16:46.:16:56.
:16:56.:16:57.

by the local RAF personnel with tremendous care to retain jobs.

:16:57.:17:01.

million has already been spent on preparing for the arrival of the new

:17:01.:17:07.

Typhoon fleets year what will happen over the next 18 months and there's

:17:07.:17:12.

another 75 million earmarked for that. Good news not just for the

:17:12.:17:18.

base but for a local contractors. There will be something like 2500

:17:18.:17:22.

personnel in this space for the foreseeable future and that is good

:17:22.:17:25.

news because the reason for that is whatever happens inside the

:17:26.:17:29.

perimeter fence here has a huge impact on the economy.

:17:29.:17:33.

It's been a long time coming. But tonight, England and Scotland will

:17:33.:17:36.

play their first football match in 14 years at Wembley stadium. As

:17:36.:17:40.

Andrew Anderson reports, just a few fans have made the trip south to

:17:40.:17:49.

watch them. In London, there's a corner that is

:17:49.:17:59.
:17:59.:18:00.

forever Scottish. Today, the Rob Roy Park -- pub was as Scottish as it

:18:00.:18:09.

gets. The big game was never far from their minds. Pretty positive

:18:09.:18:17.

and very optimistic. Looking forward to it. We should do it more often,

:18:17.:18:26.

far too long since the last one. atmosphere you get is brilliant. In

:18:26.:18:32.

the centre of town, a tartan Trafalgar Square is another rallying

:18:32.:18:40.

point for the troops. This morning, some of the last of the fans began

:18:40.:18:48.

their journey, or pilgrimage, to the south. Got to do the father and son

:18:48.:18:53.

thing. When I was younger it was every other year but now they are

:18:53.:19:00.

few and far between. Hopefully we can keep it going. They are among

:19:00.:19:05.

the 30,000 who will be inside the stadium tonight, becoming home to

:19:05.:19:11.

Glasgow at 6am tomorrow. They may or may not be celebrating a famous

:19:11.:19:16.

victory but one thing for certain is that everyone wants this to be a

:19:16.:19:20.

fixture in return to fight again. To matters on the field, let's head

:19:20.:19:30.
:19:30.:19:32.

to Wembley itself and David Currie. Good evening. I can start by

:19:32.:19:36.

bringing you the team Gordon Strachan has selected. Feast your

:19:36.:19:46.
:19:46.:19:58.

is the Scotland team for the match against England, but it is the

:19:58.:20:03.

English who start the match as bookies favourites, but can the

:20:03.:20:13.
:20:13.:20:17.

Scots sent the bookmakers home to already over, this way when in

:20:17.:20:27.

Croatia provided only a morale boost. So it's been a quietly

:20:27.:20:31.

confident squad training in London this week is unfazed by the

:20:32.:20:38.

expectations of a nation and keen to place the pressure elsewhere.

:20:38.:20:43.

pressure on them than us, we are the underdogs. The manager is a veteran

:20:43.:20:50.

of clashes against the Auld enemy but what not seeing them for 14

:20:50.:20:54.

years, does absence make the heart grow fonder? It's not changed over

:20:54.:21:00.

the last 50 years. The fans themselves want to prove they are

:21:00.:21:04.

the best supporters so there's a battle between the supporters and

:21:04.:21:11.

the players. What about the opposition? England's preparations

:21:11.:21:17.

have been dominated by Wayne Rooney, unsettled at Manchester United, but

:21:17.:21:24.

England feel settled enough to face Scotland. This is a fixture which

:21:24.:21:30.

has a lot of history and it is good in terms of our preparation that we

:21:30.:21:35.

are meeting a team that is highly motivated against us. The scene is

:21:35.:21:43.

set, the fans are ready and England and Scotland a week.

:21:43.:21:47.

I managed to waylay a true Scotland legend on his way into the stadium a

:21:47.:21:51.

few moments ago. Hall of famer and former skipper Willier Miller. I

:21:51.:21:55.

asked him if there could be such a thing as a friendly between the two

:21:55.:22:05.

nations. Probably not. I think it will be very different from any

:22:05.:22:11.

other friendly we are liable to take part in. It means more to Scotland

:22:11.:22:14.

and certainly the fans coming down will insist it is played any

:22:14.:22:20.

competitive manner. It sounds like from both camps this will be the

:22:20.:22:25.

case. A friendly but a competitive one and we are looking forward to

:22:25.:22:31.

it. They probably have better players than us so should they come

:22:31.:22:41.
:22:41.:22:41.

out on top? They do have better players and we are against it. We

:22:41.:22:48.

are certainly the underdogs but that is how we like it. On the back of

:22:48.:22:53.

the performance and Croatia, it is another possibility for us to time

:22:53.:22:57.

and a good performance and a draw or a victory to build on that success.

:22:57.:23:01.

Tonight's match is the first between the nations at the new Wembley.

:23:01.:23:04.

There have been some footballing triumphs and calamities at the old

:23:04.:23:07.

stadium, so if you can bear it join me on a nostalgic journey down

:23:07.:23:17.
:23:17.:23:18.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 77 seconds

:23:18.:24:35.

England-Scotland is one of the biggest games in world football and

:24:35.:24:45.
:24:45.:24:58.

BBC Radio Scotland 810 medium wave and on digital radio. Kick off at

:24:58.:25:06.

eight but the show is on air now. In Scotland when, you might not see me

:25:07.:25:10.

for a couple of weeks and if they lose, you might not see me again at

:25:10.:25:20.
:25:20.:25:23.

all. Let's get tonight's weather now and persistent rain across the

:25:23.:25:28.

country but at the moment we are holding onto brighter skies but
