Tonight, on Reporting Scotland. The Elgin businessman Nat Fraser fails

:00:16.:00:21.

in an appeal against his conviction for the murder of his wife Aileen.

:00:21.:00:27.

Honours for bravery for Scots who've served in Afghanistan. And it's a

:00:27.:00:35.

great day for their families too. Everybody is very proud. His dad is

:00:35.:00:42.

proud and his cousin and grandad. The phone has been ringing nonstop.

:00:42.:00:46.

Also in the programme. Anger after four years of faulty sewers -

:00:46.:00:49.

residents on this new housing development want to know why there's

:00:49.:00:51.

still a problem. Andy Warhol's politically inspired

:00:51.:00:54.

art goes on display at the Scottish Parliament.

:00:54.:01:00.

And ahead of this weekend's Great Scottish run we meet one of the

:01:00.:01:10.

world's greatest distance runners. The Elgin businessman, Nat Fraser,

:01:10.:01:13.

has lost an appeal against his conviction for murdering his

:01:13.:01:16.

estranged wife Arlene. Fraser, who's 54, has been convicted twice of

:01:17.:01:20.

hiring a hit man to carry out the killing. Arlene Fraser disappeared

:01:20.:01:26.

from her home in April 1998. She's never been found. Lisa Summers

:01:26.:01:29.

reports from the appeal court in Edinburgh.

:01:29.:01:37.

Arlene Fraser's family are all too familiar with Edinburgh's courts

:01:37.:01:42.

having spent 15 years attending hearings and trials but they believe

:01:42.:01:48.

this is the last time. I don't know what to feel. There have been that

:01:48.:01:54.

many times we have come out here and then are told there will be another

:01:54.:02:00.

appeal. It takes a while to sink in that that is it finally finished. He

:02:00.:02:07.

was first convicted in 2003. At the time of his conviction he said he

:02:07.:02:13.

would appeal. That process field in Scotland but he went to the Supreme

:02:13.:02:17.

Court who quashed his conviction and AV trial was ordered. Last year he

:02:17.:02:23.

was again found guilty but his lawyers brought about another appeal

:02:23.:02:31.

having let slip some information. It took a matter of minutes to reject

:02:31.:02:36.

his latest appeal as they did not believe comments made by witnesses

:02:36.:02:43.

would be prejudicial. His lawyers say they will now consider what to

:02:43.:02:49.

do next. Anyone convicted of a criminal offence can appeal to have

:02:49.:02:53.

the case sent back but they have two surely good reason to do that.

:02:53.:03:01.

Arlene Fraser's family hope they will not have to do this again and

:03:01.:03:06.

he will now have to serve 15 years in prison before being considered

:03:06.:03:11.

for parole. The family of a woman from Port

:03:11.:03:16.

Glasgow who was murdered in Pakistan last month have petitioned officials

:03:16.:03:19.

there, naming a single suspect. Mumtaz Sattar suffered a serious

:03:19.:03:22.

head injury while she was on a trip to the Punjab. Her family have asked

:03:22.:03:26.

the High Court in Lahore to review the police handling of the case.

:03:26.:03:34.

Laura Maxwell has more. Mumtaz Sattar travel to Pakistan two weeks

:03:34.:03:38.

ago and within hours she was dead. Her husband is in police custody. He

:03:38.:03:47.

told officers he and his wife were drugged and attacked by two men. He

:03:47.:03:53.

said they were thrown out of a moving car and his wife died from

:03:53.:03:56.

the serious head injuries she suffered. Now her family have asked

:03:56.:04:04.

the High Court there asking serious questions about the police

:04:04.:04:09.

investigation. There has been a serious allegation made of bribery

:04:09.:04:13.

of the officers involved in the case and that each and every time the

:04:13.:04:16.

family appears to have been obstructed. Magistrates have lodged

:04:16.:04:24.

an appeal in which they named one murder suspect and ask for the

:04:24.:04:28.

authorities to bring the police officer concerned to the High Court

:04:28.:04:36.

for questioning. Mumtaz Sattar's family are asking help from

:04:36.:04:40.

politicians here and in Pakistan. They say they will continue to fight

:04:40.:04:45.

for justice. It is having a devastating: Everybody but we are

:04:45.:04:52.

trying our best. Hopefully we can bring this matter to a close with

:04:52.:04:55.

the help of the authorities in Pakistan. At his shop in Port

:04:55.:05:01.

Glasgow, his family said they weren't shot but did not want to

:05:01.:05:09.

comment further. -- were shocked. You're watching

:05:09.:05:17.

Reporting Scotland from the BBC. Still to come on the programme. The

:05:17.:05:21.

dream homes that have caused a stink - because of problems with sewage.

:05:21.:05:25.

Tonight's sport is graced by a true sporting legend. One of the greatest

:05:25.:05:28.

distance runners is in Scotland. Find out why.

:05:28.:05:30.

And after a spectacular fall from grace - a former Aberdeen manager is

:05:30.:05:34.

dreaming of Scottish Cup glory. Stay tuned for the details.

:05:34.:05:40.

With less than three weeks to go until polling day, the Dunfermline

:05:40.:05:43.

by-election strayed into referendum territory today as Alex Salmond and

:05:43.:05:47.

Ed Balls clashed over currency. Labour's Shadow Chancellor used a

:05:47.:05:50.

visit to the constituency to argue that it was unlikely that an

:05:50.:05:53.

independent Scotland would be able keep using the pound. But the SNP

:05:53.:05:56.

leader insisted that a sterling zone would be in the best interests of

:05:56.:06:00.

Scotland and the rest of the UK. Steven Godden reports.

:06:00.:06:14.

In the birthplace of Andrew Carnegie it is perhaps fitting that money is

:06:14.:06:23.

at the centre of the collision between constituency and

:06:23.:06:29.

constitutional politics. At a Dunfermline bank, Labour's

:06:29.:06:34.

by-election candidate was joined by Ed Balls whose message is that Alex

:06:34.:06:39.

Salmond is not being ahead -- state with voters. The idea that Alex

:06:39.:06:47.

Salmond can guarantee to Scotland that the rest of the UK will

:06:47.:06:55.

guarantee a eurozone style arrangement is risky. I think you

:06:55.:06:59.

would end up with a separate Scottish currency and that would be

:06:59.:07:05.

catastrophic. It is a view that cut little ice with the first Minister

:07:05.:07:11.

who was on by-election duty. We think sharing the pound, which has

:07:11.:07:16.

as much hours as anybody's, is in the interests of Scotland and in the

:07:16.:07:23.

interests of the rest of the UK. We are not trying to scare folk in a

:07:23.:07:28.

referendum. We will sit down and do what is best. Ed Balls could be at

:07:28.:07:34.

the forefront of any currency negotiations and Alex Salmond

:07:35.:07:38.

insists the Shadow Chancellor needs to get his story straight. He is at

:07:38.:07:43.

odds with Alistair Darling who is apparently meant to be the leader of

:07:43.:07:49.

the campaign who said it was logical and desirable earlier this year.

:07:49.:07:57.

Elsewhere in the constituency, the SNP's by-election and referendum

:07:57.:08:02.

opponents have their say. The benefits from the trade between

:08:02.:08:06.

Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom, why would you risk that?

:08:06.:08:11.

The best way to get the best bits of the UK is to stay in it. These

:08:11.:08:15.

things have to be negotiated and worked out and it is yet another

:08:15.:08:21.

example of Alex Salmond saying and doing anything without having done

:08:21.:08:24.

the workings in order to get more votes. The by-election makes this

:08:24.:08:30.

fertile ground for arguments aimed at the wider audience. For reporters

:08:30.:08:36.

here, the currency is just one of many issues to consider before they

:08:36.:08:40.

go to the polls in three weeks time. And a full list of all seven

:08:40.:08:43.

candidates standing in the Scottish Parliament by-election for

:08:43.:08:46.

Dunfermline is on-screen now. More details are available on BBC

:08:46.:08:54.

Scotland's website. The vaccination of schoolchildren

:08:54.:08:59.

against flu has been temporarily suspended after concerns from some

:08:59.:09:03.

Muslim parents that the vaccine contains products derived from Port.

:09:03.:09:08.

More than 200,000 children are being offered the vaccine this year by

:09:08.:09:14.

nasal spray but the scheme was delayed after some parents

:09:14.:09:21.

complained it contained gelatin. Scottish soldiers are among those

:09:21.:09:25.

being honoured for bravery today for acts of bravery while serving in

:09:25.:09:28.

Afghanistan. The awards include a George Medal for a bomb disposal

:09:28.:09:31.

expert who was working alongside Danish troops. For family and

:09:31.:09:34.

friends it's a proud day, as Aileen Clarke reports.

:09:34.:09:46.

Without doubt, he prevented further casualties. During a two and

:09:46.:09:54.

Afghanistan, the bomb disposal expert put his own life on the line

:09:54.:09:58.

to rescue a comrade badly injured by a head in improvised explosive

:09:59.:10:04.

device and lead others out of the area. Effectively what we had was

:10:04.:10:13.

the sergeant had landed on a device and there was a wire running

:10:14.:10:18.

underneath it. If I had removed him to treat him, the device would have

:10:18.:10:23.

functioned and killed and injured the rest of us. I got down and

:10:23.:10:29.

identified the circuit and took the most appropriate action. At his old

:10:29.:10:35.

school today, there is much respect for his selfless courage. He would

:10:35.:10:41.

have been willing to give everything for a comrade in battle and it is a

:10:41.:10:46.

great example to our young people. At this school in Lanarkshire they

:10:47.:10:50.

were talking about their role in local hero. First Battalion Royal

:10:50.:10:56.

Regiment of Scotland, he was mentioned in dispatches.

:10:56.:11:04.

On the Remembrance Day last year and Helmand province, while soldiers

:11:04.:11:11.

were playing football and Afghan soldier opened fire. The death toll

:11:11.:11:17.

would have been much higher where it not for the private who chased down

:11:17.:11:23.

that rogue Afghan soldier. His mother says he is -- she is only

:11:23.:11:30.

learning the details now. His dad and his whole family are proud and

:11:30.:11:34.

the phone has been ringing nonstop today. It is the kind of college I

:11:34.:11:40.

would like to be able to pass on when I joined the Army. -- courage.

:11:40.:11:48.

Among the other Scots honoured today, a distinguished service medal

:11:48.:11:53.

for the commander of task force Helmand.

:11:53.:11:57.

Home-owners in a new housing development near Wishaw want to know

:11:57.:12:01.

why they've had to cope with a faulty sewage system for more than

:12:01.:12:04.

four years. Some houses in the Bett homes and Stewart Milne development

:12:04.:12:07.

have regularly suffered from waste coming up through toilets and

:12:07.:12:10.

drains, making them unusable. Julie Peacock reports.

:12:10.:12:25.

When she brought her brand-new home in 2009, she had expected luxury and

:12:25.:12:27.

convenience but for years later, the sewage system still regularly breaks

:12:27.:12:32.

down. Nothing is going down. It keeps coming up the way. Have

:12:32.:12:37.

toilets become blocked and it is impossible to use the washing

:12:37.:12:43.

machine. When she complained they suggested using the toilet in her

:12:43.:12:47.

local supermarket. I have been told you can use it but not/ or I could

:12:48.:12:57.

go to my local Asda to use players. I am sure they would get trade! With

:12:57.:13:04.

a 15-month-old baby and another on the way she wants this resolved. I

:13:04.:13:11.

am quite disgusted because it is a disgusting situation to be left

:13:11.:13:15.

them. You cannot wash clothes or use the toilet and I have said this to

:13:15.:13:21.

the managing directors to ask how they would feel about this. The

:13:21.:13:27.

developers have found a temporarily way around the problem. Sewage is

:13:27.:13:33.

pumped into a tanker and driven up the roads. This has brought its own

:13:33.:13:39.

problems. Neighbours have been complaining about the noise and the

:13:39.:13:45.

smell. Residents have contacted Scottish water ran the council but

:13:45.:13:49.

have been told the responsibility lies with the developers. They see

:13:49.:13:54.

the sewage system has been built to the proper standards and lay blame

:13:54.:14:00.

foreign matter from outside the development causing the blockages.

:14:00.:14:06.

They are meeting later today to discuss how to solve the problem but

:14:06.:14:11.

residents are frustrated that has taken so long to get this far. She

:14:11.:14:16.

just hopes by this Christmas she will no longer have to send guests

:14:16.:14:23.

to Asda to use the toilet. Other stories from across Scotland this

:14:23.:14:26.

Friday evening. A care home in Inverness is being

:14:26.:14:30.

temporarily shut down and could lose its operating licence after failing

:14:30.:14:33.

an inspection. Clachnaharry House Nursing Home was found to have areas

:14:33.:14:37.

that posed a danger to elderly residents. 18 people will have to be

:14:37.:14:41.

resettled while the home is refurbished.

:14:41.:14:45.

A summit is being planned to help ensure children in Scotland get the

:14:46.:14:48.

best possible protection when using the internet. It follows a number of

:14:49.:14:52.

cases where young people have been blackmailed or threatened online. It

:14:52.:14:55.

will bring together Scottish government ministers and childrens'

:14:55.:15:00.

welfare organisations. The inhabitants of Colonsay have

:15:00.:15:03.

until today to vote on whether they favour a community buy-out of the

:15:03.:15:07.

island's only hotel. The business has been on the market for 18

:15:07.:15:11.

months, but there are fears it could be bought by someone looking for a

:15:11.:15:15.

large house and fall out of use as a hotel.

:15:15.:15:18.

Police have launched an investigation after the statue of

:15:18.:15:21.

Greyfriars Bobby in Edinburgh was vandalised. The statue was restored

:15:21.:15:27.

on Tuesday to turn his shiny nose back to its original black, but

:15:27.:15:31.

police said an abrasive material had been "intentionally used" to strip

:15:31.:15:37.

the repaired area. A £4.5m lottery grant has been

:15:37.:15:40.

awarded to transform Glasgow's Kelvin Hall into a major museum

:15:40.:15:45.

facility. The site will be revamped to provide public access to 1.5

:15:45.:15:48.

million pieces from the city's civic collection and Glasgow University's

:15:48.:15:53.

Hunterian Museum. The venue will also house the Scottish Screen

:15:53.:15:56.

Archive. And there are more stories from your

:15:56.:16:00.

area, and all the latest news, 24 hours a day, on BBC Scotland's

:16:00.:16:08.

website. He is better known for pop art than

:16:08.:16:12.

politics, but Andy Warhol's work will be centre stage at the Scottish

:16:12.:16:16.

Parliament from tomorrow. The 40 pieces show a political side to the

:16:16.:16:28.

American artist's work. So this is his portrayal of Andrew needed. You

:16:28.:16:37.

could hardly say that everyone merited Andy Warhol is 15 minutes of

:16:37.:16:43.

fame, but the ones here are merited. For the first time, this exhibition

:16:43.:16:47.

focuses on the political side to his work. I think seeing this

:16:47.:16:55.

exhibition, people will get an indication of his interest in

:16:56.:17:01.

politics. Andy Warhol was invited to the White House quite a few times.

:17:01.:17:05.

He was not greatly interested in who was sitting in the Playhouse, was

:17:05.:17:10.

interested in the position of power that the person held. He was never

:17:10.:17:19.

shoehorned anywhere. He was very much his own person. You can always

:17:19.:17:25.

have exhibitions about different things, such as the environment,

:17:25.:17:30.

celebrity, pop art and culture. There are loads of different

:17:30.:17:36.

exhibitions you can have when you could still be scratched the surface

:17:36.:17:41.

of what and who Andrew water hole was. -- Andy Warhol. This

:17:41.:17:51.

exhibition, which begins tomorrow, as part of a 16 week celebration of

:17:51.:18:00.

his legacy. Letters go to David now, with this poor. -- this poor.

:18:00.:18:07.

One of the greatest athletes of all time is here in Glasgow for the

:18:07.:18:12.

biggest mass participation event in Scottish sport, the Great Scottish

:18:12.:18:15.

Run, which takes place this weekend. He is double Olympic gold-medallist

:18:15.:18:18.

Haille Gebresellassie and Kheredine Idessane has been to meet him. You

:18:18.:18:25.

could tell they were pleased to see him. I find this for Glasgow

:18:25.:18:30.

schoolchildren from one of runnings all-time greats. Here to promote the

:18:30.:18:38.

great Scottish run, he says that next year, he believes that Glasgow

:18:38.:18:42.

will host one of the best ever Commonwealth Games. They will have

:18:42.:18:49.

learned a lot from the past and will put on extra. I believe it is going

:18:49.:18:58.

to be something very unique and good, like the Olympics in London.

:18:58.:19:04.

This he told me was his greatest achievement, his 10,000 metres title

:19:04.:19:13.

in Sydney. His running Kerry was shaped by running to school every

:19:13.:19:17.

day carrying his book is. I was always very active. I used to run to

:19:17.:19:24.

school and carry my book is. Every day I did it. Every day, it was 20

:19:24.:19:34.

kilometres, 12 males. At five foot five, he is a giant of world

:19:34.:19:41.

athletics, having set 27 world records, two Olympic gold titles and

:19:41.:19:49.

a further four world indoor titles as well as the outdoor world titles.

:19:49.:19:56.

Is this a great race that you could win? Of course, I have a chance.

:19:56.:20:06.

Around $20,000 will be under starter 's orders on Sunday. I would love to

:20:06.:20:12.

be one of them, but unfortunately, I am working.

:20:12.:20:15.

There is coverage of the Great Scottish Run on BBC Two Scotland

:20:15.:20:18.

from 10.30pm. It is the second round of the

:20:18.:20:21.

William Hill Scottish Cup this weekend, with Highland League

:20:21.:20:22.

high-flyers Formartine United It is another shot at the big time

:20:22.:20:28.

for Formartine United manager Steve Paterson, whose demons saw him

:20:28.:20:31.

tumble from the top of the Scottish professional game. Jonathan

:20:31.:20:36.

Sutherland has been to meet the man they call Pele.

:20:36.:20:42.

I have come north of Aberdeen to their home of United. Ten years ago,

:20:42.:20:59.

Steve Paterson was hot property, having masterminded Inverness

:20:59.:21:02.

Caledonian 's famous Scottish cup victory at Celtic Park. He became

:21:02.:21:07.

the Aberdeen manager, but was eventually sacked, amid an admission

:21:07.:21:19.

that he had problems with alcohol. It was really very lowest ebb of my

:21:19.:21:25.

life. These are much happier times. As well as a football manager, he is

:21:25.:21:33.

also a social worker. After some backing from local and foreign

:21:33.:21:39.

businesses, the unknown sitting second in the Highland league. I

:21:39.:21:46.

have been very lucky that I have had good financial backing. Unless you

:21:46.:21:51.

have a good setup, you really needed to win. That happens at any level.

:21:52.:22:01.

He was given the nickname Pele and Steve Paterson signed for Manchester

:22:01.:22:10.

United as a schoolboy in the 1970s. Given the battle he has already

:22:10.:22:18.

faced, who would put it past Steve Paterson engineering a victory at

:22:18.:22:22.

the weekend. Efe Ambrose has signed a new

:22:22.:22:26.

four-year deal with Celtic. The Nigerian defender, who was helping

:22:26.:22:29.

the club highlight a charity for guide dogs earlier, has committed

:22:29.:22:32.

himself to the Scottish champions until the summer of 2017. It is not

:22:32.:22:42.

often we end with something cute and cuddly, annual Lenin knows I am not

:22:42.:22:44.

talking about him! Today marks the 130th anniversary of

:22:44.:22:53.

the foundation of the Boys' Brigade. Just one company in Glasgow grew

:22:53.:22:56.

into an international organisation which has worked with millions of

:22:56.:23:05.

children and young people. The Boys Brigade is 20 years older than the

:23:05.:23:09.

Boy Scouts, but it has also moved with the times. It remains true to

:23:09.:23:16.

its founder, William Alexander Smith. It is very important that we

:23:16.:23:24.

shall the boys lyse gabled life skills, both in gnome and out side

:23:24.:23:34.

and the likes of first aid. The organisation grew from just one

:23:34.:23:39.

company in Glasgow to a major organisation. At the birthday party,

:23:39.:23:43.

one of the youngest members cut the cake. As Big brother and father were

:23:43.:23:52.

involved as well. I would say that when we play the games and lay

:23:52.:24:00.

things about Jesus is their best. The Boys Brigade has always been

:24:00.:24:04.

founded any Christian ethos but welcomes children from all

:24:04.:24:08.

backgrounds. Joyce has been a volunteer for 50-year 's. It taught

:24:08.:24:13.

me an awful lot about people and attitudes and has made me a much

:24:13.:24:18.

better person. The media less marching now, but the Boys Brigade

:24:18.:24:25.

hopes to continue being a positive influence for youngsters for another

:24:25.:24:31.

130 years. No, let us find out what good things we can expect at the

:24:31.:24:33.

weekend for the weather. This weekend is going to be rather

:24:33.:24:42.

settled and dry, certainly compared to the week we have just insured.

The rain eventually cleared from the Borders today were some brightness

:24:48.:24:53.

towards the end of the day. Generally dry across the country

:24:53.:24:57.

this evening. There will be one must to spot of light rain showers across

:24:57.:25:01.

the hills in the North West Highlands. But for most of us, a

:25:01.:25:08.

drying night. E-mailed night, but above-average for time of year.

:25:08.:25:14.

Overnight temperatures between nine and 11 Celsius. To start the

:25:14.:25:20.

weekend, Saturday is dry and settled. Fairly cloudy to start, but

:25:20.:25:27.

it will improve, certainly across the east and south. By

:25:27.:25:34.

mid-afternoon, temperature wise, 15 or 16 Celsius. Across the West, the

:25:34.:25:44.

cloud will be thicker, better in the East. We have the weather front

:25:44.:25:48.

approaching in the north-west, which will bring some rain, but more about

:25:48.:26:00.

that in a second. If you are planning some hill walking, here is

:26:00.:26:06.

the situation tomorrow. Much drier and brighter conditions than we have

:26:06.:26:11.

seen in the last couple of days. In the inshore waters, here are the

:26:11.:26:17.

wind Rangers. The rest of the afternoon into the

:26:17.:26:31.

evening and overnight, as I said, I mention this weather front of the

:26:31.:26:35.

north-west coast, which will push on and bring some rain overnight into

:26:35.:26:41.

Sunday. Hopefully, most of the rain will miss this and be in bed by

:26:41.:26:47.

light passes through. They will be the odd outbreak of rain, coming

:26:47.:26:53.

from the south-west of the country pushing up in the afternoon. They

:26:54.:26:59.

should be dry, warm and windy for the great Scottish run on Sunday.

:26:59.:27:06.

And good luck to the editor of this programme and that!

:27:06.:27:10.

Now, a reminder of tonight's main news in brief. Elgin businessman Nat

:27:10.:27:15.

Fraser has lost his appeal against his conviction for murdering his

:27:15.:27:18.

estranged wife Arlene. Fraser, who is 54, has twice been convicted of

:27:18.:27:22.

hiring a hit man to carry out the killing.

:27:22.:27:30.

The alcoholic mother who starved her four-year-old son to death and left

:27:30.:27:34.

his body in a cot for nearly two years has been jailed for 15 years.

:27:34.:27:37.

Amanda Hutton also admitted neglecting five of her other

:27:37.:27:39.

children aged between five and 13. And that is Reporting Scotland. I

:27:40.:27:43.

will be back with the headlines at eight o'clock and the late bulletin

:27:43.:27:46.

just after the ten o'clock

:27:46.:27:46.
