colder. It could be short lived. That is all from the BBC's

:00:00.:00:10.

A tale of two cities highlighting the country's economic divide.

:00:11.:00:18.

Thousands of jobs created in Edinburgh, but Glasgow is

:00:19.:00:24.

struggling. Making the trip to school safer. Vehicles are banned

:00:25.:00:29.

from roads around three East Lothian schools at peak times. A couple of

:00:30.:00:36.

times, cars have never gone into my children will stop it is fantastic.

:00:37.:00:45.

-- nearly gone into my children. Farmers call for tighter controls of

:00:46.:00:49.

sea eagles, claiming they are killing too many lambs. And Celtic

:00:50.:00:59.

attempt to sign former Hibernian striker Leigh Griffiths.

:01:00.:01:06.

Good evening. There's a growing economic divide between Scotland's

:01:07.:01:10.

cities, according to new figures comparing the major population

:01:11.:01:14.

centres throughout the UK. It shows that London, as a big international

:01:15.:01:17.

centre is streets ahead, creating 300,000 jobs over the last two

:01:18.:01:23.

years. But let's look in detail at the picture here. Edinburgh, with

:01:24.:01:27.

20,000 new jobs is second in the UK league. Doing well too is Aberdeen,

:01:28.:01:36.

creating nearly 4,000 posts. The news is not so good in Dundee which

:01:37.:01:40.

lost 1,700 jobs. But the biggest slump is in Glasgow. This former

:01:41.:01:46.

industrial giant lost more than 14,500 jobs, coming second bottom in

:01:47.:01:49.

the UK table. Our business correspondent David Henderson has

:01:50.:01:59.

been assessing the figures. Glasgow is home to thousands of students,

:02:00.:02:03.

preparing for the world of work. But where do they think they are likely

:02:04.:02:10.

to get a job when they graduate? Aberdeen. They have lots of new

:02:11.:02:16.

technologies coming up. London, Edinburgh. But I would not want to

:02:17.:02:21.

live in either place. I would rather stay here. London, definitely.

:02:22.:02:33.

Glasgow, definitely, as well. London has been the hotspot for new jobs

:02:34.:02:39.

since 2010. Creating ten times more than its nearest rival, Edinburgh.

:02:40.:02:46.

Others lag far behind. This report reveals huge disparities between our

:02:47.:02:50.

cities. Those based on government and finance seem to have based --

:02:51.:02:55.

fared much better in recent years than those who grew up in the towns

:02:56.:03:02.

of manufacturing and heavy industry. The Glasgow skyline and economy have

:03:03.:03:04.

changed since the days of ship building. But this report warns that

:03:05.:03:10.

Glasgow and Dundee both underperform and punch below their weight. Both

:03:11.:03:17.

cities have a reasonable share of highly skilled workers and jobs. At

:03:18.:03:22.

a large group of individuals with no skills -- but a large group. Dundee

:03:23.:03:32.

is facing the challenge with investment. ?1 billion to develop

:03:33.:03:38.

the waterfront. They aim to grow the workforce and local economy. There

:03:39.:03:43.

has been addressed away from here to other cities. We are working closely

:03:44.:03:48.

with the Scottish government and the local universities in an attempt to

:03:49.:03:53.

keep high-quality graduates in Dundee. Especially postgraduates.

:03:54.:03:58.

They are the ones who can make a great deal of difference. With the

:03:59.:04:05.

UK economy getting up there has been a rising new jobs. But how widely

:04:06.:04:10.

that growth is shared may prove a key issue in this referendum year.

:04:11.:04:16.

MPs investigating a spate of North sea helicopter crashes have heard

:04:17.:04:18.

claims commercial pressure is putting safety at risk. The

:04:19.:04:21.

allegation by the Unite union was made during a session of the House

:04:22.:04:24.

of Commons Transport select Committee held in Aberdeen.

:04:25.:04:26.

Helicopter operators have strongly denied the claim. Steven Duff

:04:27.:04:36.

reports. In less than five years, five serious incidents involving

:04:37.:04:39.

North Sea helicopters. 20 people have been killed. All the accidents

:04:40.:04:47.

involving super Puma aircraft. The crash near Shetland prompted an

:04:48.:04:53.

enquiry. Today, evidence was taken in Aberdeen. Five major crashes in

:04:54.:04:59.

four years all involving the same helicopters. Does that not concern

:05:00.:05:06.

you? First of all, each accident is a tragedy for those involved, and

:05:07.:05:13.

for me personally, I am a flight engineer, I cannot accept accidents.

:05:14.:05:20.

Unions, offshore workers, and pilots, want a full judicial

:05:21.:05:25.

enquiry. There were claims that commercial pressure was putting

:05:26.:05:34.

safety at risk. What comes first, safety of a contract? I believe

:05:35.:05:37.

commercial pressure operates in the industry. -- safety, or the

:05:38.:05:47.

contract? From the operators, a strong denial. We have mechanisms

:05:48.:05:56.

put in place, a number of reporting mechanisms that helps is simply

:05:57.:05:59.

avoid commercial pressures from a contractual situation. We would

:06:00.:06:04.

simply walk away if it meant compromising safety values. The

:06:05.:06:09.

committee will publish it report in the coming weeks. Meanwhile crash

:06:10.:06:13.

investigators have told a fatal accident inquiry into the 2009 Super

:06:14.:06:16.

Puma tragedy that the helicopter's manufacturer still needs to increase

:06:17.:06:19.

safety checks. Mark Jarvis, a senior engineering inspector at the Air

:06:20.:06:21.

Accidents Investigation Branch, said additional monitoring still needs to

:06:22.:06:26.

be put in place. He said the manufacturer Eurocopter insists the

:06:27.:06:28.

existing checks provide "sufficient protection." 16 men died when the

:06:29.:06:34.

helicopter crashed into the North Sea off Peterhead.

:06:35.:06:39.

You're watching Reporting Scotland from the BBC. Still to come on

:06:40.:06:43.

tonight's programme: What lies beneath - scientists use 3D

:06:44.:06:46.

technology to build up a picture of the soil we walk on. In sport,

:06:47.:06:53.

Celtic will continue to chase the Scotland striker Leigh Griffiths -

:06:54.:06:55.

that's despite Wolves rejecting their first offer. And can the glory

:06:56.:07:01.

days return to Scottish athletics? New stars and new records, as the

:07:02.:07:04.

Scots get ready for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

:07:05.:07:14.

It's a familiar scene around the country. Queues of cars at the

:07:15.:07:18.

school gates as parents try to drop off their children. Now a council

:07:19.:07:23.

has decided to tackle the problem by banning cars from the streets near

:07:24.:07:27.

three primary schools at peak times. It follows potentially dangerous

:07:28.:07:31.

driving by a minority of people. Joanne Macaulay reports. As safer

:07:32.:07:40.

route this morning for these children. Vehicles on this road and

:07:41.:07:47.

two others are and from driving between 8:30am and 9:30am, and 3pm

:07:48.:07:53.

and 4pm. It follows concern about the number of cars parking close to

:07:54.:07:58.

the schools. We had reports of near misses. Very consistent complaints

:07:59.:08:07.

from people. Congestion at least cool gates is a problem in many

:08:08.:08:12.

parts of the country. East Lothian is the first council to introduce

:08:13.:08:16.

this and at peak times to try to make the journey to school safer and

:08:17.:08:23.

healthier. If there is no movement of vehicles, the safety of all the

:08:24.:08:27.

children is secured. Hopefully more and more people will walk or cycle

:08:28.:08:34.

to school. It is the first car free day around these primary schools and

:08:35.:08:38.

everything is running smoothly. Time closures will be in operation for

:08:39.:08:41.

the next year and a half. Then the council will ask for feedback to

:08:42.:08:45.

decide whether or not to make these changes permanent. The council said

:08:46.:08:51.

most people ask where in favour. Those going to school this morning

:08:52.:08:56.

seems supportive. Cancer nearly run into my children. -- cars have

:08:57.:09:12.

nearly. It is safer, it suits us. Counties across Scotland with

:09:13.:09:15.

similar problems say they will watch the experiment with interest.

:09:16.:09:19.

Royal Bank of Scotland has revealed it's setting aside more than three

:09:20.:09:22.

billion pounds in additional funds to cover the cost of what it says

:09:23.:09:25.

were "bad decisions" taken during the financial crisis. The bank -

:09:26.:09:30.

which is 80% owned by the taxpayer - says the money will go towards

:09:31.:09:33.

settling claims relating to mis-selling of mortgage and

:09:34.:09:35.

insurance products, as well as interest rate hedging. It's

:09:36.:09:39.

confirmed that eight senior executives won't be getting a bonus.

:09:40.:09:45.

University academics and support staff have announced the latest

:09:46.:09:48.

strike date in a long-running dispute over pay. They'll go on

:09:49.:09:52.

strike next Thursday. It'll be the third one day strike since October.

:09:53.:10:01.

Universities have been trying to maintain as normal a service as

:10:02.:10:04.

possible on strike days though some lectures and seminars have been

:10:05.:10:06.

cancelled. Famers and crofters are calling for

:10:07.:10:09.

controls on the number of white tailed eagles, also known as sea

:10:10.:10:12.

eagles, amid growing anger about the number of lambs being lost to the

:10:13.:10:15.

birds. But conservationists insist there's no need to control the size

:10:16.:10:20.

of the population. Our environment correspondent, David Miller,

:10:21.:10:29.

reports. The return of the white tailed eagle to Scottish skies is

:10:30.:10:35.

seen as a success story by conservationists. These birds were

:10:36.:10:40.

wiped out after centuries of persecution, but the introduction

:10:41.:10:47.

programmes have brought them back. They are now firmly established on

:10:48.:10:50.

the West Coast with around 80 breeding pairs. They have also begun

:10:51.:10:57.

breeding on the East Coast. Conservationists are delighted. But

:10:58.:11:02.

farmers and crofters say they have real concerns. At the heart of the

:11:03.:11:06.

controversy, claims that these eagles are killing lambs in large

:11:07.:11:12.

numbers. Scientists deny it is the case, farmers are angry. They cannot

:11:13.:11:18.

see what the eagles are actually doing, so I cannot see how they can

:11:19.:11:23.

say that. They would say anything, they are so pro-eagle. What we might

:11:24.:11:38.

need to look at is the possibility of relocating individual birds, or

:11:39.:11:41.

individual pairs, where they are having a disproportionate impact on

:11:42.:11:48.

local farming. We cannot start thinking about moving them around,

:11:49.:11:51.

they will simply come back and occupy the vacuum. Scientists say

:11:52.:11:57.

the population will continue growing in the years ahead, but that should

:11:58.:12:03.

not be a worry. We may have several hundred reading pairs of sea eagles,

:12:04.:12:07.

and that should not be a concern. There is plenty of space for them,

:12:08.:12:14.

Scotland is a country. One thing is clear, this bird of prey is back for

:12:15.:12:18.

good and we will have to learn to live with that.

:12:19.:12:24.

Other stories making the news across Scotland: The parents of a Russian

:12:25.:12:28.

student, whose body was found in Argyll have thanked everyone who

:12:29.:12:30.

helped search for her-- saying their support and assistance made it

:12:31.:12:34.

easier for them to cope with their loss. Yulia Solodyankina was

:12:35.:12:36.

reported missing in Edinburgh last June. Her body was found in Arrochar

:12:37.:12:41.

earlier this month. The Nigg fabrication yard and Energy

:12:42.:12:45.

Park owner Global Energy Services is paying-off all its apprentices,

:12:46.:12:47.

following a downturn in rig repair work. The company says the 19

:12:48.:12:52.

apprentices were given notice last week in a move the company is

:12:53.:12:55.

describing as regrettable and embarrassing.

:12:56.:12:58.

An Aberdeen architect has revealed new proposals for the city centre

:12:59.:13:01.

that includes putting a roof over part of Union Street. John Halliday

:13:02.:13:07.

says covering part of the city's main thoroughfare between Union

:13:08.:13:09.

Bridge and Market Street would provide better, more weatherproof

:13:10.:13:11.

links between the existing shopping centres.

:13:12.:13:16.

An early medieval gravestone is leaving its home in Govan in Glasgow

:13:17.:13:20.

for the first time in eleven hundred years.

:13:21.:13:24.

The ornately carved stone, which weighs half a tonne, is heading to

:13:25.:13:27.

the British Museum in London. It dates from a time when Govan was the

:13:28.:13:31.

political and spiritual capital of the ancient Britons. Specialists

:13:32.:13:41.

have always appreciated how important this is. But it is nice to

:13:42.:13:45.

have and validation of it going to the British Museum. And the

:13:46.:13:50.

opportunity to make the wider world are well of this important -- we

:13:51.:13:59.

are, this important moment when Governor was the centre of the

:14:00.:14:01.

universe. A novel method of distributing books

:14:02.:14:04.

to avid readers in some of Orkney's most far-flung islands is

:14:05.:14:07.

celebrating it's 60th anniversary. The Family Bookbox Service - run by

:14:08.:14:10.

the local library - sees boxes of books sent out to around forty

:14:11.:14:13.

households onboard the inter-island air service.

:14:14.:14:24.

What lies beneath? Not just the title of a scary movie but the aim

:14:25.:14:29.

of scientists in Dundee who're investigating the billions of life

:14:30.:14:32.

forms that exist below ground. They're using 3D printing to do it,

:14:33.:14:35.

as our science correspondent Kenneth Macdonald explains.

:14:36.:14:40.

You are looking at the key to life on Earth, everything from food to

:14:41.:14:44.

flooding depends on soil and you are seeing it in a new way. Science has

:14:45.:14:50.

helped us learn an enormous amount about the world around us. We have

:14:51.:14:55.

more to learn about the world beneath our feet. What we want to

:14:56.:14:59.

know is how this looks on the inside. We place this in the x-ray

:15:00.:15:07.

machine, then they go through the sample and the detector screen will

:15:08.:15:12.

show how the x-rays have been absorbed. 3000 scans build up a 3-D

:15:13.:15:26.

image. The technique can go further, using a 3-D printer to build a model

:15:27.:15:31.

of the soil sample. This has been blown up ten times, usually for the

:15:32.:15:36.

systems we work with, we work with soil, smaller samples, so this is a

:15:37.:15:41.

few centimetres cubed and we can then use these and change the

:15:42.:15:45.

properties of the surface of the material and inoculate it with

:15:46.:15:51.

different microbes. We can use image analysis techniques to work out

:15:52.:15:55.

which bits are connected and use visualisation approaches that can

:15:56.:15:59.

colour different parts or different clusters of pores differently. Then

:16:00.:16:05.

you have islands in the soil that are either connected or not. The

:16:06.:16:10.

team says previous approaches to soil science have been like studying

:16:11.:16:15.

architecture by looking at a pile of rubble. We have treated soil like a

:16:16.:16:20.

black box. We have not been able to look inside. These technologies

:16:21.:16:29.

which are so exciting... We have the ability now to look at those very

:16:30.:16:34.

complicated systems in a new way. There's a whole new world down

:16:35.:16:39.

below, a single handful of soil contains as many life forms as there

:16:40.:16:44.

are people on the planet. It's now just under six months to go

:16:45.:16:48.

to the start of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

:16:49.:16:52.

Reporting Scotland will be bringing you all the build up from how the

:16:53.:16:55.

athletes are preparing to the issues behind such a big event. Our

:16:56.:16:58.

Commonwealth Games team Lisa Summers and Jane Lewis will be keeping you

:16:59.:17:07.

right up to date. 2014 is a massive year for Scotland

:17:08.:17:11.

and come the summer all eyes will be on Glasgow at the city hosts the

:17:12.:17:16.

20th, love games. It is costing over ?500 million. It is about ?100 per

:17:17.:17:24.

person. I will be looking at where that money goes.

:17:25.:17:31.

Team Scotland will want to impress in front of a home crowd. Who are

:17:32.:17:41.

the ones to watch? We will profile medal contenders and those hoping to

:17:42.:17:47.

spring a surprise or two. The east end of Glasgow is changing, millions

:17:48.:17:51.

spent on regeneration, but will it change the lives of those who live

:17:52.:17:57.

there? I think it will be the best thing that would have happened to

:17:58.:18:01.

Glasgow. Most of the venues have been completed. In fact, they are up

:18:02.:18:07.

and running. I will be looking at all of the sports that make up the

:18:08.:18:12.

games. What about lifestyle? The most challenging legacy commitment,

:18:13.:18:20.

research suggests that participation is and is normally added, can the

:18:21.:18:25.

Commonwealth Games win where others have failed? If it is past glory you

:18:26.:18:33.

after, -- you after, we will bring memories and stories from bygone

:18:34.:18:38.

days. We will be asking what is in it for the rest of Scotland? Will it

:18:39.:18:44.

mean a boost to the wider economy? In six months time, the opening

:18:45.:18:48.

ceremony will take place here at Celtic Park. We have they, love

:18:49.:18:52.

games covered. We will bring you all of the news, issues and online.

:18:53.:19:02.

Later this week, we will be looking at whether the games can change our

:19:03.:19:15.

lifestyle habits. Celtic are still chasing the

:19:16.:19:19.

Scotland striker Leigh Griffiths. That's despite having a first offer

:19:20.:19:22.

rejected. Griffiths is currently at the English League One side Wolves.

:19:23.:19:25.

They say they'll only sell if the price is right. Neil Lennon's

:19:26.:19:29.

hopeful a deal can be reached for a player who seems to split fans'

:19:30.:19:32.

opinions, as our senior football reporter Alasdair Lamont reports.

:19:33.:19:40.

There is little doubt over Lee Griffith's ability. 28 goals on loan

:19:41.:19:49.

at Hibs earned him international recognition and many admirers. One

:19:50.:19:54.

of them has watched his team rely on an attacking midfielder for goals

:19:55.:20:03.

this campaign. But what would he bring to a Celtic side already

:20:04.:20:08.

running away with the league? It is not just the goals, he can see a

:20:09.:20:15.

pass, his movement is good. He has pace. He has broken into the

:20:16.:20:24.

Scotland squad. I see him as a player who, if he comes here, he

:20:25.:20:30.

knows the environment. He will improve here with the players around

:20:31.:20:35.

him. I track fans are divided over his belief that he is good enough to

:20:36.:20:39.

improve Celtic's standing. Now it is a case of waiting to see

:20:40.:21:11.

if Celtic's desire to sign Griffiths is matched by willingness to pay the

:21:12.:21:14.

valuation. Glasgow's appetite for athletics was

:21:15.:21:17.

clear to see ahead of the Commonwealth Games with Saturday's

:21:18.:21:19.

International meeting at the Emirates Arena. The Scotland team

:21:20.:21:22.

performed strongly with five national indoor records broken. The

:21:23.:21:25.

capacity crowd also cheered as a Scot picked up her European

:21:26.:21:27.

Championship Gold medal. Brian McLauchlin reports.

:21:28.:21:35.

A golden moment for a cold and athlete as Lindsey Sharpe finally

:21:36.:21:39.

receives her European championship winning medal from her father. It is

:21:40.:21:49.

a total surprise, I was not expecting it. In Helsinki, they had

:21:50.:21:54.

the medal ceremonies outside, it is a bit strange, it is nice to have it

:21:55.:22:00.

in a stadium. The crowd inside the arena were treated to some terrific

:22:01.:22:04.

performances from Scottish athletes. Laura Muir, and Chris O'Hare.

:22:05.:22:16.

When you hear all the athletes saying, the crowd were amazing, you

:22:17.:22:23.

think, how much can you hear them? But coming off the final bend, there

:22:24.:22:34.

was an almighty roar. One athlete who has already tasted success says

:22:35.:22:38.

those participating in Glasgow this summer are well on track to succeed.

:22:39.:22:44.

Yet a mac guy couple of performances where the crowd got behind them and

:22:45.:22:51.

gave them a extra push. He beat Andrew, Britain's top 800 metre

:22:52.:22:59.

runner. That was a great scalp for him to get. If Celtic is to be any

:23:00.:23:04.

guide for the summer games, athletics fans are in for a treat.

:23:05.:23:08.

-- if Saturday. Scotland has a brand-new world

:23:09.:23:17.

champion. Darren Burnett claimed the world indoor Bowls title.

:23:18.:23:24.

Andy Murray has fallen to six in the latest tennis world rankings, his

:23:25.:23:31.

lowest spot in five and a half years. He dropped two places after

:23:32.:23:34.

his quarterfinal departure last week.

:23:35.:23:41.

Team GB is leading to more success at head of Sochi. The four-man crew

:23:42.:23:45.

took silver at the European Championships.

:23:46.:23:54.

Scott and's cricketers have beaten Namibia by 21 runs. -- Scotland's

:23:55.:23:59.

cricketers. They next meet Papa New Guinea.

:24:00.:24:07.

Red carded St Johnstone keeper is said to miss their League Cup

:24:08.:24:13.

semifinal with Aberdeen. He would have served the band tonight, but

:24:14.:24:16.

that game is off due to a waterlogged pitch.
