Calls are to be made for police officers to be armed in the wake

of the terror attack in Westminster on Thursday.

Five people died, including one police officer.

The issue will be on the minds of rank-and-file officers

at the Scottish Police Federation Conference on Tuesday,

where it's expected there will be an emergency debate on the issue.

The terror attack on Westminster shocked all of us. But the death of

a serving police officer brought home the dangers of the job. It has

raised the question on many officers' might as to what they need

to do not just to protect the public but themselves as well. Now there is

expected to be an emergency debate on the subject at the Police

Federation conference. I would be surprised that elevates the not

bring forward the number of discussions given the events that

took place in London and that could be questions about arming resources,

that will feature in that discussion. I would be surprised if

there is not a view expressed by many that more police officers

should be armed as a consequence of these events. There is a broad

church of opinion but all agree on one thing. Some have very polarised

views on the subject, but ultimately, it comes down to the

question of the police service is expected to keep everyone else says,

who will keep the police officer said? It is a controversial issue.

Three years ago, armed officers were turning up the incidents when there

condemning of such activities, but we also need full cooperation with

Police Scotland, proactive cooperation in order to move forward

on this. The committee wants relationships to be strengthened.
