Sunday Politics in the South East. Coming up later: Parting the red | :38:37. | :38:41.
vote? Will UKIP's success in last week's county council elections help | :38:41. | :38:46.
or hinder the Labour Party? Joining me in the studio today is the | :38:46. | :38:48.
Liberal Democrat MP for Eastbourne and Willingdon Stephen Lloyd and the | :38:48. | :38:50.
Labour Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Chatham and Aylesford | :38:50. | :38:58.
Tristan Osborne. In a few moments, we'll be speaking to the UKIP leader | :38:58. | :39:05.
Nigel Farage. Tristan, you made much-needed gains on Thursday but | :39:06. | :39:10.
not enough to be confident of the breakthrough you need at the next | :39:10. | :39:15.
general election. Well, we topped the vote at 29% this time round. | :39:16. | :39:20.
won seats in areas in which we need to form the next government, in | :39:20. | :39:27.
constituencies like Dover, Harlow in Essex. We are on course for a | :39:27. | :39:34.
victory in 2015 and we have made significant gains across the region. | :39:34. | :39:40.
But under Tony Blair you had 22 seats and now you have 13. There is | :39:40. | :39:45.
still more work to do but this is not the same time as when Tony Blair | :39:45. | :39:48.
was here. We are in a recession at the moment. We have just been in | :39:48. | :39:55.
government for 13 years. We have a lot more to build on. We are looking | :39:55. | :39:59.
to make 40 games at the next general election and we are on course to | :39:59. | :40:04.
make that. Stephen, you held on to all your feeds in Eastbourne, but | :40:04. | :40:10.
further afield you took a beating. It was a challenge but in Eastbourne | :40:10. | :40:15.
it was a fantastic result. doubled our majority in the one seat | :40:15. | :40:25.
the Tories were targeting. We made a few losses in Lewis but we stole | :40:25. | :40:28.
this -- we are still the second largest party in the county council. | :40:28. | :40:33.
It is an incredibly strong result. Well, the impact of UKIP was felt | :40:33. | :40:37.
across the South East in last week's elections - the party won 37 seats | :40:37. | :40:40.
in our counties. They're now the main opposition to the Conservatives | :40:40. | :40:46.
in Kent and West Sussex, leaving the Lib Dems trailing in their wake. | :40:46. | :40:49.
Labour made significant gains, but the Tories lost their overall | :40:49. | :40:52.
majority - and the control - of East Sussex. Lucinda Adam looks at how | :40:52. | :41:02.
:41:02. | :41:03. | ||
the political landscape has changed. They've been called fruitcakes, | :41:03. | :41:08.
loonies and clowns, but who is laughing now? UKIP 137 seats across | :41:08. | :41:12.
the south-east. They are now the opposition party in Kent and West | :41:12. | :41:16.
Sussex. Although they took fewer seats in East Sussex, it was enough | :41:16. | :41:21.
to take overall control of the away from the Conservatives. As the votes | :41:21. | :41:26.
were counted, UKIP and Labour made significant gains. It was the | :41:26. | :41:30.
Conservatives and Liberal Democrats who became coalition casualties. In | :41:30. | :41:34.
Thanet, UKIP won seven out of the eight county council seats from the | :41:34. | :41:38.
Tories. It is really because our policies resonate from the man on | :41:38. | :41:44.
the ground. Immigration, lack of services or overloaded services, | :41:44. | :41:54.
schools, health care. As the UKIP tally to 17, it gave council leader | :41:54. | :41:59.
Paul Carter caused concern. party only just held on to a | :41:59. | :42:05.
majority -- cause for concern. Losing 26 seats has slashed their | :42:05. | :42:08.
majority from 59 to just six. Paul Carter lays the blame the | :42:09. | :42:14.
government's door. One of the most stressful three hours of my life | :42:14. | :42:18.
from one o'clock onwards this afternoon. If you get 25% of the | :42:18. | :42:24.
voters voting UKIP, the consequences will be very close. The government | :42:24. | :42:30.
has got 18 months to turn the country round. They got to rethink | :42:30. | :42:36.
and recalibrate and tell us where they really want to take this | :42:36. | :42:41.
country. While UKIP stole Labour's hopes of a comeback in Thanet, then | :42:41. | :42:48.
now have seven out of eight councillors in Thanet. Edmund and | :42:48. | :42:56.
was in town to celebrate. It is an unprecedented result to win seven | :42:56. | :43:01.
out of eight seats here in Hastings. It reflects hard work, a | :43:01. | :43:05.
message about the cost of living and jobs, the things that matter to | :43:05. | :43:10.
people here in Hastings. I'm delighted with the gains we have | :43:10. | :43:15.
made. Although Labour has gained three seats in Crawley and ten in | :43:15. | :43:19.
Kent, it was not the revival they were hoping for. They haven't made | :43:19. | :43:26.
the breakthrough they need. You look along the north Kent corridor, these | :43:26. | :43:28.
results don't indicate to me that they have made a huge amount of | :43:29. | :43:34.
headway there. If Labour were to win the election, they need to win these | :43:34. | :43:37.
marginal seats across the south-east and the whole of the South of | :43:37. | :43:42.
England. While the Liberal Democrats didn't lose seats in Kent, gains by | :43:42. | :43:48.
the Lib Dems and Labour have pushed them into fourth place. But they | :43:48. | :43:53.
lost 17 councillors across the south-east and Surrey. Most people | :43:53. | :43:56.
for the -- who voted for UKIP point even know who their new councillor | :43:56. | :44:02.
is. What are they going to do locally? Are they going to mend the | :44:02. | :44:12.
:44:12. | :44:14. | ||
roads or sort out social services? Now the votes are in, 37 newly | :44:14. | :44:17.
elected UKIP councillors are enjoying the Bank Holiday weekend | :44:17. | :44:20.
before work begins. What difference will they make to our county | :44:20. | :44:24.
councils across the south-east? Lucinda Adam reporting. Joining us | :44:24. | :44:27.
in the studio is the leader of the Conservative group on East Sussex | :44:27. | :44:30.
County Council Keith Glazier, and from London, the UKIP leader and | :44:30. | :44:36.
South East MEP Nigel Farage. Nigel Farage, thank you for joining us. I | :44:36. | :44:39.
know you have been busy not least because you have been celebrating. | :44:39. | :44:44.
As your knowledge to self, you have now got to prove that you can a | :44:44. | :44:47.
difference in local government -- as you act knowledge yourself. | :44:48. | :44:55.
Absolutely. We have now got to show that we will stand up for residents | :44:55. | :44:59.
and aren't that county councils provide even better value for money. | :44:59. | :45:04.
We will campaign against every single wind turbine development | :45:04. | :45:12.
occurs they are ugly, useless and don't work. In the south-east, there | :45:12. | :45:15.
are not applications due for onshore wind farms. They are popular here | :45:15. | :45:21.
and they create jobs. Also, it in the county council, you don't have | :45:21. | :45:26.
any influence in those decisions. No, it is very interesting to work | :45:26. | :45:30.
out who has responsibly key for anything. In theory, it is the | :45:30. | :45:39.
government. UKIP county councillors will not stop at this. It is the | :45:39. | :45:44.
most expensive energy folly we have ever pursued. Immigration, let's | :45:44. | :45:49.
face it, that is what you have been voted in on at county council level. | :45:49. | :45:54.
You talked about wind farms, you lifted the smoking ban in pubs, but | :45:54. | :45:57.
none of those issues are relevant to county council politics. We have got | :45:57. | :46:02.
to come up with new policies now. What we have seen around the rest of | :46:02. | :46:05.
the country, with the very small number of UKIP councillors that we | :46:05. | :46:10.
had before last Thursday, UKIP elected representatives rolling | :46:10. | :46:13.
their sleeves up, getting involved in communities and making a | :46:13. | :46:19.
difference. You are quite right, a lot of this work will be nonparty | :46:19. | :46:23.
political. I'm confident we have got a good group of people elected with | :46:23. | :46:29.
a delight -- diverse range of backgrounds and it will reinvigorate | :46:29. | :46:37.
local democracy. So what are you going to do? It won't be me doing | :46:37. | :46:44.
anything because I won't be there! But we will fight hard if there is a | :46:44. | :46:54.
:46:54. | :46:54. | ||
big, contentious issue. The people feel awkward... Back with you in a | :46:54. | :46:57.
moment. Keith Glazier. You were expecting to be the leader of East | :46:57. | :47:00.
Sussex county council by now, but thanks to Nigel, you're just the | :47:00. | :47:03.
leader of the Conservative party with no overall control. What | :47:03. | :47:11.
happens now? We have got some independents who have gained some | :47:11. | :47:16.
seats in East Sussex, and of course we have gained some and lost some as | :47:16. | :47:24.
well. Clearly we now have to have some conversations to form the next | :47:25. | :47:31.
administration for this county. is going to be interesting. You need | :47:31. | :47:36.
to form some sort of coalition. You have got the Liberal Democrats, your | :47:36. | :47:42.
traditional enemies in Sussex, which would you rather be in bed with? I | :47:42. | :47:46.
would rather not be in bed with any of them, but I need to talk to all | :47:46. | :47:49.
of the councillors who will form East Sussex county council going | :47:49. | :47:56.
forward. A busy weekend for you then. Stephen | :47:56. | :48:06.
Lloyd, UKIP took a lot of seats from you. That must have been a surprise. | :48:06. | :48:16.
:48:16. | :48:16. | ||
I don't think they took seats from us in East Sussex. They did. What we | :48:16. | :48:24.
saw in Eastbourne was that most when the Conservatives. Clearly, as Nigel | :48:24. | :48:30.
has alluded to, have had a very successful campaign. It will be | :48:30. | :48:34.
interesting to see how it pans out over the next few months locally. On | :48:34. | :48:38.
a national level, the Conservatives are the major problem. On the way | :48:38. | :48:43.
here, I wonder whether this UKIP surge as the Tories' STP moment from | :48:43. | :48:53.
:48:53. | :48:53. | ||
30 years ago. This could play very well for you, Tristan. If the | :48:53. | :48:59.
Conservatives go to the right, it is an open goal for you guys. | :49:00. | :49:06.
Absolutely. We are winning back constituencies, divisions which will | :49:06. | :49:10.
lead us to the next government. Labour is scoring well. What I would | :49:10. | :49:14.
say is that where labour is not putting up a presence in some areas | :49:14. | :49:19.
of Kent, you could have taken what was the Thatcherite vote. The | :49:19. | :49:22.
right-wing vote. The right wing and that is unhappy with David Cameron | :49:22. | :49:29.
and wants to go back to 1980s that right government. They want a return | :49:29. | :49:37.
to Margaret Thatcher, Nigel. It has been hard labour for 100 years and | :49:37. | :49:43.
in came UKIP from zero to 24%, and most of our voters are old Labour | :49:43. | :49:49.
voters. There are lots of Labour and Lib Dem voters for UKIP, as well. | :49:49. | :49:53.
Stephen Lloyd, would you like to see Keith work with your party or with | :49:53. | :50:03.
:50:03. | :50:04. | ||
UKIP? I think Keith has an interesting challenge. My | :50:04. | :50:08.
suggestion, because clearly I'm here to give some helpful advice, is to | :50:08. | :50:16.
perhaps discuss this with Labour in Hastings. That is interesting! The | :50:16. | :50:19.
Lib Dems' loss of seats across Sussex in particular suggests that | :50:19. | :50:22.
they may no longer be the South East's favourite protest party since | :50:22. | :50:24.
they went into Coalition Government. Labour candidates were hoping to | :50:24. | :50:28.
capitalise on this but they saw many of their protest votes go to UKIP. | :50:28. | :50:31.
But, in the long term, could UKIP's success actually benefit the Labour | :50:31. | :50:39.
Party? The Liberal Democrats have traditionally enjoyed success in | :50:39. | :50:44.
local elections in the south-east as the party of the protest vote. But | :50:44. | :50:48.
now their National Power is making them a party to protest against. | :50:48. | :50:52.
They held seats in Eastbourne and Kent but lost 17 councillors in | :50:52. | :50:59.
Sussex and Surrey. In the south-east, they are the party that | :50:59. | :51:03.
which has suffered most overall. It is queer why there is a particularly | :51:03. | :51:07.
big protest at this time, because we are in a situation where, for | :51:07. | :51:10.
slightly different reasons, the three major national parties south | :51:11. | :51:18.
of the border have all suffered in terms of their public popularity. | :51:18. | :51:23.
Popularity with protest voters has earned the Green party their first | :51:23. | :51:28.
MP. But this time around, they have failed to gain any seats | :51:28. | :51:36.
across-the-board in Sussex. They did win their first county seat in Kent. | :51:36. | :51:40.
It sends a message party wide that the Green party can be a force. It | :51:40. | :51:46.
is an incredible breakthrough. years ago, the Green vote share was | :51:46. | :51:54.
almost the same as UKIP. So why haven't they made more games? -- | :51:54. | :52:01.
more games? You have to take the flak that comes, it is not entirely | :52:01. | :52:04.
surprising that there is a little bit of reaction against them for | :52:04. | :52:10.
that reason. It is a very slow, steady pattern of progress. By | :52:10. | :52:14.
contrast with UKIP, that looks decidedly unspectacular and | :52:15. | :52:22.
unimpressive. The Conservatives, they need to work to win back voters | :52:22. | :52:27.
lost to UKIP to reinforce their south-east chokehold. In seats like | :52:27. | :52:33.
Hastings, it is labour, buoyed by their county council gains, who have | :52:33. | :52:40.
their eye on winning the protest vote in 2015. The government is not | :52:40. | :52:47.
in touch. It doesn't listen. With UKIP splitting the right-wing vote, | :52:47. | :52:51.
could Labour turn around their fortunes in the south-east. I think | :52:51. | :52:56.
there is a strategic dilemma for David Cameron. An obvious message to | :52:56. | :53:00.
take from today with the success of UKIP is that we should be taking | :53:00. | :53:04.
tough action on Europe, immigration, spending cuts and so on and so | :53:04. | :53:09.
forth. In other words, shift further to the right. But the dangers are | :53:09. | :53:16.
that you then lose out on the centre ground and you open up this wave of | :53:16. | :53:26.
:53:26. | :53:27. | ||
the electoral vote. The irony is that their success will put them | :53:27. | :53:35.
under the spotlight of scrutiny. They could be a flash in the pan. A | :53:35. | :53:38.
lot of them have got no experience of local government at all and do | :53:38. | :53:42.
not understand how much time it will take. A lot of them may fall by the | :53:43. | :53:47.
wayside. That has been the story of UKIP MEPs over the years. By the | :53:47. | :53:51.
time the next election comes around, three or four of them have either | :53:51. | :53:58.
gone, defected or are in prison. protest vote has brought | :53:59. | :54:08.
multi-cultural politics to south-east regions. Time to talk to | :54:08. | :54:15.
our guests of the day, Tristan and Stephen. You one he -- seats in | :54:15. | :54:21.
Hastings, but not in planet. Why is your message going down well with | :54:21. | :54:31.
:54:31. | :54:31. | ||
some parts of the south-east but not others? Sarah Owen has worked very | :54:31. | :54:36.
hard in Hastings to get those seven seats. But I would say is that | :54:36. | :54:42.
Labour is now the only moderate and internationalist party on the agenda | :54:42. | :54:45.
now. The Conservative party has conceded the centre ground to | :54:45. | :54:53.
Labour. In planet, as I just mentioned, you had a Labour MP there | :54:53. | :54:58.
before. Seven out of eight seats went UKIP. So that is where you need | :54:58. | :55:04.
to target. The danger is that UKIP are going to steal your thunder. | :55:04. | :55:11.
UKIP may take Conservative voters, but we are also winning in our own | :55:11. | :55:15.
right in the key constituencies which will form our government of | :55:15. | :55:23.
2015, in Dover, Hastings, Harley -- Harlow, Crawley. If we continue to | :55:23. | :55:27.
do that and we continue to stay in the centre ground and have a one | :55:27. | :55:30.
nation, moderate message that is socially liberal, we will win power | :55:30. | :55:40.
in 2015. Stephen, big dangers for your party. Further afield, where | :55:40. | :55:47.
there are not MPs, your losing dramatically. Where there is a | :55:47. | :55:56.
strong local vote, we are winning. But there are only two of you. | :55:56. | :56:00.
know, and I was interested in what Tristan was saying. Labour have not | :56:00. | :56:08.
had the breakthrough they should have done. There is no way it is one | :56:08. | :56:14.
nation. You have a real challenge. But the biggest problem in the UKIP | :56:14. | :56:21.
rise -- is the UKIP rise. David, if you tack to the right, Tristan will | :56:21. | :56:27.
be the winner here. None of this is about local government. As someone | :56:27. | :56:31.
who wants to lead a good, local council, I think we need to | :56:31. | :56:35.
absolutely understand what the 43,000 people in East Sussex meant | :56:35. | :56:40.
when they voted UKIP. The 50,000 that voted for us, we know what they | :56:40. | :56:44.
meant. Labour and liberals combined only just got the same vote as | :56:45. | :56:49.
UKIP. There is a message here. We need to understand it, but equally | :56:49. | :56:55.
we need to deliver good services for the people of East Sussex. Nigel | :56:55. | :57:01.
Farage, you will be under scrutiny now, you know that. Ian thinks most | :57:01. | :57:07.
of your councillors went last the difference. Here's speculating. I'm | :57:07. | :57:14.
confident we will get good people in there who will do a good job. My | :57:14. | :57:17.
method is to the other parties that something fundamental has changed | :57:17. | :57:21.
here. UKIP is now a force in politics, it is here to stay, and | :57:21. | :57:27.
roll on the European elections that we will have this time next year. | :57:27. | :57:30.
Look what has happened the Greens. They have now got power in Brighton | :57:30. | :57:34.
and Hove. They did win as much as they had hoped this time, this is | :57:34. | :57:40.
the danger for your party. No, the Green party has never been more than | :57:40. | :57:44.
a party strong in five or six cities across the country. It has never had | :57:44. | :57:49.
that spread of support. Second question, you said this morning, you | :57:49. | :57:54.
will announce job Parliamentary candidate shown next June. You're | :57:54. | :58:00.
going to stand in Kent, surely? When I make my mind up, I'm sure I will | :58:00. | :58:09.
do it as an exclusive with you! Lovely! . Now a round-up of the | :58:09. | :58:19.
:58:19. | :58:21. | ||
see CCTV cameras installed in an attempt to cut down a number of | :58:21. | :58:26.
attacks on paramedics. Last, there were 98 assaults on South East and | :58:26. | :58:31.
Berlin staff. Live animal exports resumed at the Port of Dover this | :58:31. | :58:33.
week. Animal rights protesters are not | :58:34. | :58:41.
pleased. Hastings and Ryan MP Amber Rudd has | :58:41. | :58:45.
been criticised as describing the Hastings as a magnet for those on | :58:45. | :58:49.
drugs. She defended herself and said she is still incredibly optimistic | :58:49. | :58:53.
about Hastings. Sussex police has become the first force in the | :58:53. | :59:01.
country to buy GPS devices to help those suffering from dementia. | :59:01. | :59:05.
And then abrasions the Brighton council as it is confirmed the | :59:05. | :59:11.
Alnwick Stadium will host two matches the Rugby World Cup 2015. | :59:11. | :59:21.

Where do you stand? I think this has got to be a good idea. I work very | :59:33. | :59:38.

closely with local police. You are supportive? Yes, I am. People with | :59:50. | :59:53.
dementia can disappear for half a day and it is very worrying for the | :59:53. | :59:59.

think this needs to be decided by scientists and farmers and groups | :00:10. | :00:15.

and it makes revenue for the country. We need to support our | :00:18. | :00:25.

have been celebrating after Amber Rudd's comments? I thought they were | :00:31. | :00:35.
pretty outrageous, actually. Ill taste. The people of Hastings and | :00:35. | :00:41.
why this week showed their vote by electing seven Labour councillors. | :00:41. | :00:47.
We will build a coalition throughout one nation party. We have made | :00:47. | :00:51.
significant gains this week and I look forward to the message coming | :00:51. | :00:58.
from Ed. The message from Nick Clegg is that you are on a journey. | :00:58. | :01:04.
