touch. Microsoft -- battling to stay in touch. Microsoft launches

windows 8 to battle smartphones and tablets. The first round of US

trade ruling against Apple lost. Growing for gold. The Olympics may

have pulled the United Kingdom out of recession in the third quarter.

Analyst warns the recovery could be Good to have you with us. Its

boldest move in two decades or a last throw of the dice. Microsoft

overthrow of the world for touch screen smartphones and tablets.

Apple is worth twice as much and Google is catching up as the

traditional PC business declines. We'll hear why windows 8 may be too

little, too late. First a report from Microsoft headquarters in

Seattle. Microsoft's founder, Bill Gates, and his successor joined the

staff to celebrate 30 years of charitable giving. For the man in

charge, the next few days are crucial. We have reimagined windows

and windows 8. The new Windows 8 system is supposed to take

Microsoft, rather late, into the world of touch-screen mobile

computing. The boss knows what is at state. The launch of windows 8

on the phone is an epic thing for Microsoft. It's up there in the top

two or three big moments, including Windows 95 and the launch of the

IBM PC, starting us on a new era of computing. Microsoft is a giant,

employing more than 40,000 across Seattle, generating big profits

from Windows and Office. The clever people in these buildings - what

they haven't done is produce anything that has changed the world

or made consumers go "Wow". Unlike Apple which this week launched

another iPad and outpaced its old rival in delivering new products.

Microsoft believes this, the tag the computer powered by Windows 8,

shows that it could be smarter. This firm needs to move fast to

stay in touch. Well, for more I'm joined by the editor of Technology

News and Reviews website. Rupert, today is a launch day for Windows 8.

Yes. How significant is this for Microsoft? It is very significant.

Microsoft have been falling behind in the race, especially with Apple,

and Google, as they move to the cloud. The PC is old hat. People

are moving to mobile devices and tablets. The PC market will

contract for the first time since 2001 by a per cent. The smart

phones, the tablets are getting powerful, faster. And are used more.

The smartphone has the same amount of power as a PC. It costs less, is

more portable and you don't have to leave it on the desk. It takes over

the functions of a PC. It's the first time Microsoft has the same-

looking function across mobile phones, tablets and desktops. Why

would someone upgrade to Windows 8 if they have Windows 7 and went

down the Vista path. Why upgrade, where in companies they'd have to

retrain staff? Microsoft are not pushing this into the companies.

They have finally come off Windows XP and will not move to Windows 8.

Microsoft will position consumers, especially women, the female market,

which is seen as untapped. They'll hope as people use the stuff in

their daily lives, that pressure will build on companies to switch

over to it. Do you think this will edge Microsoft ahead or is it two

little, too late? Because it came out two years ago in the States,

and three years ago if the phones are right - it's something that

solves no problems, and it's not anything that the oppositition has

been doing. It's a company trying to keep a toehold. Thank you for

stay with technology. Apple scored a legal victory again in its patent

battle with Samsung. Now to Mariekeo in Singapore. Tell us the

latest chapter in the battle between the two companies. That's

right. We have been talking about the legal battle between the two

companies for many months now. This time it's the us international

trade commission. The ruling is still preliminary, but the judge

did find that Samsung infringed four of Apple's patent - and we are

talking smartphones. The ruling needs to be upheld by the full

Commission, which is expected to take place in February. The ITC has

the power to block pucts being imported into the United States. If

it will be a huge blow for the North Korean company. It's a huge

win for app really, after Samsung was ordered to pay millions. In

Tokyo, Hague and London, the courts ruled that Samsung did not infringe

thanks to the London Olympics. That boosted growth in August.

helped to see an improvement in growth figures. The third quarter

enjoyed the positive impact from the Olympic and Paralympic Games -

with ticket sales adding 0.2 percentage points to growth.

Households benefitted from an increase in the number of people in
