get some Samsung phones and tablets banned in the US for good. | :00:26. | :00:29.
Is China over the worst? Global markets look for signs of a | :00:29. | :00:39.
:00:39. | :00:42. | ||
turnaround, after two years of Welcome to World Business Report. | :00:42. | :00:47.
I'm Alice Baxter. Also in the programme - is the smart watch set | :00:47. | :00:54.
to be the next must-have gadget? We start with these two. They are | :00:54. | :00:57.
archrivals in the shops as they battle for dominance of the | :00:57. | :01:01.
multibillion dollar market for smartphones and tablets. But for the | :01:01. | :01:04.
last couple of years, Apple and Samsung have also been taking their | :01:04. | :01:07.
fight to the courts in a massive legal conflict over four continents. | :01:07. | :01:14.
Apple claiming Samsung copied the idea for the iPhone and iPad. | :01:14. | :01:20.
Samsung counterclaiming that Apple infringed its technology patents. | :01:20. | :01:24.
Today is a major showdown - a court may ban some Samsung smartphones and | :01:24. | :01:26.
tablets from US stores, and the US International Trade Commission | :01:26. | :01:29.
decides whether to ban imports of certain Samsung devices to the US | :01:29. | :01:39.
:01:39. | :01:44. | ||
altogether. Mariko Oi reports. Or wine lawsuit after another, Apple | :01:44. | :01:48.
and Samsung have been suing each other for the last few years, | :01:48. | :01:54.
literally around the world. -- won lawsuit. The accused each other or | :01:54. | :01:58.
stealing key designs and technology. The biggest penalty is having to | :01:58. | :02:03.
remove some of their products from stores like there's. All of them are | :02:03. | :02:08.
unavailable that American consumers. But if the International Trade | :02:08. | :02:11.
Commission rules against Samsung, some of the older models may have to | :02:11. | :02:17.
go. This legal battle is starting to get political. In June, the | :02:17. | :02:21.
commission decided to ban some Apple products. But the US government | :02:21. | :02:29.
overruled the decision, provoking much from South Korea. That is not | :02:29. | :02:36.
the only legal battle. Following a jury's ruling that some sun did copy | :02:36. | :02:43.
some elements of Apple's products, Apple and trying to get some | :02:43. | :02:51.
products banned as well. Is a good publicity? Having Sam some | :02:51. | :02:58.
acknowledged and cemented as Apple's main bidder is good Samsung. | :02:58. | :03:05.
-- competitor. It is a risky way of getting exposure in the market. The | :03:05. | :03:11.
fate of some popular products from Sam Song are now in the hands of the | :03:11. | :03:18.
US legal system. -- Samsung. So much for tablets and smartphones, | :03:18. | :03:20.
but is that really yesterday's battle? According to reports, | :03:20. | :03:24.
Samsung has applied in the last few days for US and South Korean | :03:24. | :03:28.
trademarks for a smart watch that connects to the Internet. This is | :03:28. | :03:34.
one prototype that Sony were showing off earlier this year. There have | :03:34. | :03:37.
long been rumours that Apple is working on its own watch but has | :03:37. | :03:42.
Samsung got there first? Let's talk to technology analyst | :03:42. | :03:50.
Larry Magid. He joins us via webcam from Palo Alto California. | :03:50. | :03:54.
Good to talk to you. Thank you for joining us. Talk me through the | :03:54. | :04:03.
smartphone. A mean, the smart watch. Will it be the next big thing? I am | :04:03. | :04:07.
thinking maybe Apple can see is Samsung for stealing the idea, which | :04:07. | :04:12.
is actually a room are. After all, since they had been rumours of, | :04:12. | :04:19.
maybe they have a law suit there. A jerking. Samsung may be able to beat | :04:19. | :04:29.
:04:29. | :04:39. | ||
important. We are pretty sure Apple is moving in that direction. -- | :04:39. | :04:48.
wearable. It is a chance for some other players. Sony launched its | :04:48. | :04:55.
prototype earlier. Talk me through what we are expected thing this | :04:55. | :05:01.
smart watch to be able to do. Will it effectively replace our phones | :05:01. | :05:07.
and other things? Most of the products are here talked about are | :05:07. | :05:13.
really parts to the smartphone. If the Samsung watch can connect with | :05:13. | :05:19.
an android phone, obviously a Samsung, you would not have to | :05:19. | :05:23.
reinvent everything. If you put all of the technology in the watch, I do | :05:23. | :05:30.
not think you will get much battery life. It could be done. I think | :05:30. | :05:39.
Apple, will also be thinking like that. Thank you. We will be waiting | :05:39. | :05:48.
to see the result. To China, where global markets are | :05:48. | :05:51.
looking for more evidence that the economy is recovering after two | :05:51. | :05:54.
years of slowing growth. On Thursday strong import and export figures for | :05:54. | :05:59.
July boosted hopes that the Chinese economy could be over the worst. In | :05:59. | :06:02.
the last few hours, we have had some inflation figures which have been | :06:02. | :06:08.
fairly positive. In an hour, we'll get the really important ones - | :06:09. | :06:15.
industrial production and retail sales figures for July. We will | :06:15. | :06:22.
bring order that in a little bit more detail. We will cross over to | :06:22. | :06:30.
Beijing. All of the indicators seem to suggest that after a rather slow | :06:30. | :06:33.
two years, things are moving in the right direction for China. That is | :06:33. | :06:39.
right. They are talking about a normalisation, a stabilisation of | :06:39. | :06:45.
the situation. Many will say it is unclear if we are seeing a full | :06:46. | :06:51.
recovery. What is happening here, China is having a larger slowdown in | :06:51. | :06:58.
almost 20 years. China's economy is still growing more than 7%. That | :06:58. | :07:04.
would be the envy of the world. Has been a drop in demand from America | :07:04. | :07:12.
and are. And also, China's new leaders want to see a rebalancing of | :07:12. | :07:17.
the economy. They have said they are willing to see a slower and more | :07:17. | :07:21.
sustainable growth. But the figure everyone talks about is 7%. The | :07:21. | :07:25.
leaders said they would not let economic growth drop below that | :07:25. | :07:31.
figure. It is the envy of many countries. Just to break down the | :07:31. | :07:37.
data that we have been getting. On Thursday, strong numbers coming out. | :07:37. | :07:42.
Exports have not picked up in the US or Europe. We had the inflation | :07:42. | :07:48.
numbers out today. We are expecting the retail sales and industrial | :07:48. | :07:52.
production to come out next. They are expected to be read to the | :07:52. | :07:59.
strong. Yes, relatively strong. There are a few areas. Demand | :07:59. | :08:07.
elsewhere is picking up. What else is interesting is the issue of | :08:07. | :08:16.
oversupply. Some industries have authorities trying to tackle back | :08:16. | :08:26.
:08:26. | :08:27. | ||
issue. -- that issue. That could boost their output. There are | :08:27. | :08:30.
concerns that some state owned enterprises in the long run could go | :08:30. | :08:36.
to the wall. That will concern people, in particular, industries. | :08:36. | :08:44.
People seem to think the economic situation in China may be bottoming | :08:44. | :08:48.
out if these figures over the last few months are to be believed. | :08:48. | :08:58.
:08:58. | :08:58. | ||
you. Let's stay in the region and had to Singapore. Singapore marks | :08:58. | :09:01.
its 48th Independence Day today and they're celebrating. The Prime | :09:01. | :09:03.
Minister has announced Singapore's economy is expected to grow | :09:03. | :09:07.
previously forecast. Sharanjit Leyl joins me from Singapore what has the | :09:07. | :09:14.
Prime Minister been saying? It is national day of stop -- | :09:14. | :09:19.
national day. It means the Prime Minister gave an address on the | :09:19. | :09:29.
:09:29. | :09:29. | ||
forecast of the year. He has raised the forecast. A sign that South East | :09:30. | :09:36.
Asia is benefiting from the global recovery. There is a lot of focus on | :09:36. | :09:40.
growth here because Singapore is incredibly small. It has no natural | :09:40. | :09:50.
