Ousted South Korean President Park Geun-hye apologises to the country

:00:00.:00:16.

as she arrived at prosecutors' offices for questioning as part

:00:17.:00:19.

of a corruption investigation that has already cost her the presidency.

:00:20.:00:28.

And just how well can robots play football?

:00:29.:00:30.

We'll take a look at some of the innovations on offer

:00:31.:00:33.

at the world's largest computer and tech fair.

:00:34.:00:42.

In a moment we'll be talking about what's going on in Australia's

:00:43.:00:51.

banks, as Westpac faces trial over lending practices.

:00:52.:00:54.

It's the scandal that's engulfed a nation.

:00:55.:00:58.

Former South Korean President Park Geun-hye is being questioned

:00:59.:01:00.

by prosecutors over a corruption scandal that brought her down.

:01:01.:01:03.

Ms Park is accused of colluding with an associate to pressure big

:01:04.:01:06.

conglomerates into donating to her charitable foundations.

:01:07.:01:08.

In response, it's alleged that these businesses received favours

:01:09.:01:13.

But the scandal has also raised questions about the role

:01:14.:01:18.

of the so-called Chaebols within Korean society.

:01:19.:01:20.

The word chaebol is a combination of the Korean words

:01:21.:01:23.

These influential groups of companies include Samsung,

:01:24.:01:36.

Hyundai and Lotte group - all of which dominate

:01:37.:01:38.

Samsung alone accounts for 30% of the entire value of the Korean

:01:39.:01:43.

stock market, but there are dozens of other Chaebols in the country.

:01:44.:01:47.

The corruption scandal isn't the only issue facing

:01:48.:01:51.

The government claims that its biggest trading partner -

:01:52.:01:55.

China - is imposing economic sanctions on the country,

:01:56.:01:57.

over its decision to host the United States THAAD

:01:58.:02:00.

Oliver Salmon, Lead Economist and South Korea Analyst,

:02:01.:02:16.

He joins me on the line from Singapore.

:02:17.:02:23.

Thank you for being on the programme. If we first of all start

:02:24.:02:32.

with the issue of chaebols. Many are saying that the impeachment of

:02:33.:02:42.

President Park and that the boss of Samsung is what will cause this to

:02:43.:02:49.

change. Will it? In the past, we have had problems with chaebols we

:02:50.:02:53.

have had presidential pardons and nothing 's been done about it. The

:02:54.:02:58.

difference this time around is the level of public disquiet we have had

:02:59.:03:03.

with the impeachment of President Park and now the prosecutors and the

:03:04.:03:07.

issues going on at Samsung. This should give the new leadership when

:03:08.:03:14.

they come in a strong mandate for corporate reform. We see this

:03:15.:03:18.

situation as being slightly different to historical instances

:03:19.:03:25.

and hopefully more positive responses going forward. It is

:03:26.:03:28.

interesting because many are watching this very closely because

:03:29.:03:32.

they are waiting to see if this will be the trigger to see if there is a

:03:33.:03:36.

historic change as to how business is done in South Korea and yet it

:03:37.:03:40.

seemed to be business as usual. The South Korean stock market climbing

:03:41.:03:44.

up and up-to-date, Samsung shares going up and up. We will all still

:03:45.:03:48.

buy the goods all over the world, the likes of Samsung and Hyundai.

:03:49.:03:57.

Absolutely. The stock markets have been buoyed by the idea that

:03:58.:04:01.

corporate reform is coming. These are still international companies

:04:02.:04:04.

and very strong brand. You only need to look at Finland and the impact

:04:05.:04:13.

the decline of Nokia had and the impact of other companies

:04:14.:04:16.

collapsing. Fenland has struggled to generate growth after Nokia. --

:04:17.:04:23.

fenland. South Korea needs this. Since the financial crisis, growth

:04:24.:04:30.

has stagnated. This is probably due to the fact that all these chaebols

:04:31.:04:43.

around the services sector. There is the fear that in the long-term,

:04:44.:04:50.

there may be a Japanese style period of stagnation. It is a hot topic for

:04:51.:04:55.

the new administration when they come in. In the meantime, add to

:04:56.:05:00.

that these spats that is a merging between South Korea and China.

:05:01.:05:07.

Businesses are saying that actually we are seeing sanctions imposed on a

:05:08.:05:11.

South Korean businesses in mainland China, for example. Absolutely.

:05:12.:05:19.

There are concerns of deployment of the ante missile system that already

:05:20.:05:25.

we have seen the Chinese respond and they have imposed a ban on Chinese

:05:26.:05:31.

tour groups visiting South Korea. A number of tour groups going to South

:05:32.:05:35.

Korea are China and they spend more than the average tourist in South

:05:36.:05:39.

Korea as well. The impact on paper seems relatively strong but we must

:05:40.:05:43.

consider it is a relatively immature tourism sector in South Korea. Only

:05:44.:05:49.

about 3.5% of export revenues come from tourism. It has stoked fears,

:05:50.:05:53.

though, of further actions from China. Clearly trade is a

:05:54.:05:58.

significant topic. The South Korea and exports around 130 billion US

:05:59.:06:05.

dollars of goods to China. It is a roundabout 25% of total goods and

:06:06.:06:10.

exports. We do not see China in posing significant trade barriers,

:06:11.:06:14.

however, the integration of South Korean products into the Chinese

:06:15.:06:20.

supply chain means that any type of punitive response on supply trade

:06:21.:06:24.

might be self-defeating in terms of the Chinese business. Nevertheless,

:06:25.:06:28.

South Korea is stuck between a rock and a hard -- hard place. We have

:06:29.:06:33.

seen Rex Tillerson, the US Secretary of State, on his visit to Asia

:06:34.:06:39.

are... All right. It is a difficult situation in terms of balancing

:06:40.:06:43.

between relations at China and the US. Banks, all of us. Sorry to

:06:44.:06:48.

interrupt you but time is getting the better of us.

:06:49.:06:55.

The US government is expected to announce on Tuesday,

:06:56.:07:03.

that with immediate effect, it's banning certain

:07:04.:07:05.

battery-operated devices from cabin baggage on flights from a number

:07:06.:07:07.

of countries in the Middle East and North Africa.

:07:08.:07:10.

Speaking off the record, government officials said

:07:11.:07:12.

the prohibition would apply to devices larger than a mobile

:07:13.:07:14.

phone on non-stop flights from ten airports in eight unspecified

:07:15.:07:17.

The Guardian newspaper is reporting that several UK banks processed

:07:18.:07:20.

nearly $740m from a vast money-laundering operation,

:07:21.:07:22.

run by Russian criminals with links to the Russian government

:07:23.:07:25.

HSBC, the Royal Bank of Scotland, Lloyds, Barclays and Coutts are some

:07:26.:07:32.

of the banks facing questions over what they knew

:07:33.:07:34.

Documents seen by the Guardian show that at least $20bn appears to have

:07:35.:07:39.

been moved out of Russia during a four-year period

:07:40.:07:41.

From self-driving buses to delivery drones -

:07:42.:07:57.

this week the northern German city of Hanover becomes the centre

:07:58.:08:00.

of the tech world, with the CeBIT trade fair, at which some 3,000

:08:01.:08:04.

exhibitors from 70 different countries will parade

:08:05.:08:06.

This year, automation and robotics are taking centre stage,

:08:07.:08:10.

and robots are taking on ever more human roles.

:08:11.:08:13.

a photo opportunity and a renewed commitment to trade from Angela

:08:14.:08:29.

Merkel and Japan's Shinzo Abe and the opening of the CeBIT Tech show.

:08:30.:08:35.

On display, the latest in automation, including some products

:08:36.:08:37.

that could transform the world of work. Among many children, I grew up

:08:38.:08:44.

with the dream of one-day driving a bigger like this but if that is to

:08:45.:08:48.

ever happen, I'm going to get a move on because this is an autonomous dig

:08:49.:08:53.

up and it can do all of the dirty work itself. It doesn't need a

:08:54.:08:58.

driver to offer it and it uses sensors to get a map of the

:08:59.:09:03.

environment and then the operator can specify a region where to dig

:09:04.:09:08.

based on this map and the digger drives it into the region and then

:09:09.:09:14.

autonomously big is. This won't be the end of human digger drivers, of

:09:15.:09:18.

course. You always need at person which programmes the task for the

:09:19.:09:23.

digger and tells the digger where to go and what to do, actually. Now,

:09:24.:09:29.

not all robots are here to take your job. This one over here could become

:09:30.:09:34.

your next colleague and what's more, you can control it from halfway

:09:35.:09:39.

around the world. Now imagine my colleague operating the robot with

:09:40.:09:49.

the robot being located on the International Space Station. Now,

:09:50.:09:52.

the robot could maintain regular tasks without even human presence.

:09:53.:09:58.

Shooting for the stars is one thing but back on Earth, robots may not be

:09:59.:10:02.

able to beat humans at their own game just yet.

:10:03.:10:11.

Hopefully you won't have robot presenting this show any time soon.

:10:12.:10:17.

That is also me, see you in a moment.

:10:18.:10:23.

The number of children under the age of five who have had teeth removed

:10:24.:10:27.

in hospitals has risen by almost a quarter in the last decade.

:10:28.:10:30.

The figures are from the Royal College of Surgeons,

:10:31.:10:33.

which says most of this tooth decay could have been prevented

:10:34.:10:37.
