Women's Highlights Scottish Curling Championships

The Scottish Curling Women's Championship is celebrating its 40th

anniversary. It all began back in 1977, when Margaret Paterson and her

team-mates picked up this trophy for the very first time. Who will join

the role of honour this year? Welcome to the 2017 addition at

Dewars Centre in Perth. The name of Eve Muirhead appears on

the trophy more than anyone else. Since 2009 she has dominated this

competition, winning it six times in the last eight years. Could anyone

stop her charge towards the Magnificent Seven Scottish titles?

This year's competition kicked off a week ago. Seven teams entered and

after they had all played each other, the table looked like this.

Hannah Fleming needed a tie-break to decide who would progress to the

knockout stages. They won that tie-break much to go through to the

semifinal as the third qualifier. There, they faced Team Smith, who

had earlier lost six against Team at Muirhead, which meant Eve Muirhead

advance straight to the final. The match turned in the six end when

Team Fleming, already five riven three ahead, stole three, to give

them an unassailable lead. They went on to ease to a comfortable 9-6

victory. So Hannah Fleming through to her

fifth Scottish final and a repeat of the 20 15th competition, when she

lost out narrowly to Eve Muirhead. -- 2015.

A new addition to Muirhead's rink from the league -- from the team who

won last year. Lauren Gray. This was the same team that had won bronze in

the European Championships in Glasgow last November. We do have a

massive target on our back and everyone wants to beat us out here,

and it makes it tough. When we got that Olympic bronze medal we work to

super, super hard for that and we have the European Championships this

year, so that is good as well. We have a fantastic coach and staff

behind us. We brought in Glen as our tactical coach and we have a

fantastic team of coaches, so if we can put all our hard work together

and take it forward to this last game.

Fleming's team had two new faces after the team that lost two years

ago. Alison Spence has been on Hannah Fleming's team for seven

years. Evers was going to be a tough

opponent to play in any game but it's a final so it's whoever plays

well in the game and it doesn't mean if you had a good week you can

continue. If we put in a good performance we know we can push it

to the line. -- Eve Muirhead was always going to be.

Whoever wins earns the right to represent Scotland in the women's

Championships in Beijing in less than a month. This could also have a

big bearing on the selection for team GB.

Before we get to the action, a quick reminder of the format.

There are ten ends and points are accumulated over the course of the

match for the stone is closest to the T at each end. If there are no

stones in the house, the end is blanked and no points are awarded.

That is exactly what happened in end four, as Muirhead cleared the house

with her last stone to ensure she kept the hammer going into the next

end. We joined the match in the fifth end

with the scores level, one piece. Your commentators are Bob Kelly and

Jackie Lockhart. Yeah, Lauren Gray with her first

stone now, number five. Muirhead with the last one. Not much scoring

so far. Just the two scoring ends. That's not helping get things going.

A completely different strategy as well. We saw Hannah Fleming with the

end going down here and she asked her team to draw one to the corner,

so she was being really aggressive. Yes.

OK, good line now. A chance now for Fleming to get one round. No

Yellowstone is in play so she glides in front. A nice shape. All Muirhead

can do is try to play a freeze up to that one. That's a great start for

Team Fleming there. They really are playing very well at this moment. So

Lauren will have to follow with an intern draw and come up onto the

base of that layer. They are going to have to work this really hard.

Not sure it's got the weight. A high line as well, Jackie. It is amazing

the curling it does at the last minute. Look at that movement. Just

slightly short on weight. She was heavy with her first one, of course,

and maybe just pulled it back a little too much.

So now I think we're looking for an intern draw here. Probably a guard.

Doesn't want it to be too heavy. Half check... If she could get it on

the inside it would be nice. And we can see them taking that huge curl

their at the end. She needs it to stop there. Muirhead quite entitled

to remove these from play now. That last stone, not too happy with that

stuff. I think just peeling that read in the middle there? -- that

red. Yeah, just pick that one out of

there. Releases the yellow again, so it could be used to drive back onto

the Redstone. -- red stone. Hannah Fleming is almost giving the ice out

to the edge of the circles. A good five feet, five and a half feet now.

A lot of swing. Not sure she got quite out to the stick on that one,

though. Asking Jennifer to transfer a bit harder to hold it straighter.

If it's going to over curl, it's better to leave it high. As they

have done. APPLAUSE

Works a bit as a guard but I would have thought Muirhead will leave

that situation there with the short one played and working with the

reds. Just to see if she can make the double here. Then effectively

the yellow has a bit of cover on it. Working down the centre line so

Fleming probably OK with that. See if Adams can make this double. Not

quite. It's OK. She's put a little corner guard on there as well.

Possibly looking at plan B. I don't think Muirhead will be too worried

about the way this end's building up. She has got a yellow with some

cover on it and Fleming just guarding a single stone on there at

the moment. A guard attempt from Dodds. Yeah, always a tricky one. Do

you keep your guard is high or try to bring them close to the house?

Because if you try to bring them to close and they come in, it gives

Muirhead to hit another one out of the wings. And all these other

shots. And if you leave them to hide, as you said, you can have the

swing on the ice. -- if you leave them too high. She can see a little

piece of the red, Sloan. Just a quiet weight. We'll probably see

more than a right-handed player on the sheet and we do know if you play

the right weight here it will take a lovely curl. She could steal the

house for two. A lovely shot. Almost a similar shot we saw her play two

ends ago, where she made the mistake would be guard, but no mistake

there. That makes the hit and roll from Fleming much more difficult, a

bigger distance for her to hit this one now and rolling behind those

centre red stones. A very, very nice shot. So, Jennifer Dodds' second.

This is looking a little high at the moment. She really needed to stay

high and connect to the house. Really committed with all this stuff

in the front coming in. Probably not the place she wants to go, but as

you say, because the two red guards are our there, she has to get to the

fore foot before Hannah Fleming does. -- out there. She might draw

it outside the centre line. She has played this end to get centre guards

and she would have to come in behind. Certainly not taking that

chance. Doesn't want it to deep of course. Top of the T line. Pretty

good. Well played, well called and well swept by the team there. If

anything is maybe a foot further than you want. If Fleming freezes

that one it doesn't leave an awful lot of room for Muirhead. A good

situation at the moment. Right in the middle of the red, in the middle

of the 12 foot Circle. So we are talking five feet of curl there. So

ideally Hannah Fleming would really like to be sitting right on top of

the yellow stone Hannah has just played. But whatever she does, she

doesn't want to overthrow it, that's for sure. Try to play a bit of a tap

on it? I would be suggesting, this looks like it would be overthrowing,

even anywhere hide, if it is sat on the 12 foot or 8-foot, that would

still be making it very difficult ease. -- anywhere high. -- very

difficult for Eve Muirhead. She has a great opportunity here. She will

see all of that red and get a little role in behind. -- roll in behind.

Yes, if she could get it to roll over to the left and line up to the

yellows. So, great chance now for Muirhead. Three stones to come. What

can she do with this one? She should make the take out without any

problem. Not a lot of weight on this one. She under thrown it. Try to be

a bit cute there, maybe. Paid the penalty. Wow, a big chance going

begging there. I think that was just down to weight. Didn't give it

enough weight. The first thing that -- first was to make the takeout. A

big sigh of relief from Fleming. A big let off for her. She was staring

at losing two, maybe three at that end. She could really put the

pressure on Muirhead and even take the steel, try to come writing onto

that yellow stone in the bottom. Just move it a couple of inches and

get the shot, it would then be very hard for Muirhead to move. But takes

a lot of precision to do that. Yes, she has to be careful that she

doesn't overthrow this again because she wants to come across and be on

top of the yellow stone not on top of the red.

So can she take advantage of that uncharacteristic miss from Muirhead?

Not doing it, you know. This would still be an opportunity... Wow, just

a little heavy, wasn't it? Yes. Not what she wanted at all. Still with

the opportunity to get three reds here. There was a huge swing, as we

talked about. Just that yard heavy. Just doesn't take the curl, and

that's what happened there. You just have to get off nose on the

left-hand side of that shot there. To catch the back red, roll a little

and take a three here. It's certainly on, isn't it? You've got

to watch not to jam ready to read, though. -- red-to-red. She was going

to take the intern there but is going for the outturn. A little on

the centre line side. A huge chance now. Only had two shots and scored

in the match so far. Two single-point spot the chance for a

multiple score now for Muirhead. If she can get the accuracy. Chance to

make amends here. Trying to hold it. Get the back one. It does, you know.

Two, three. Great shot from Muirhead. A couple of loose ones

from Hannah Fleming and a loose one back from Muirhead herself, but

makes the last one and nails the big three. That was a great shot. I

thought she hadn't laid enough weight on that. What a great way to

go into the fifth end break. A three for Muirhead. This is the school

after five ends. The crowd here loving the quality of

this match, but let's take a break from the action and get to know the

two skips better. My name is Eve Muirhead. I'm the

skip so I stand in the target and call the shots in the end. I've

played against Hannah lots and lots of times. It goes back to juniors.

We are really good friends as well. Both teams are very close and when

it comes to playing, both teams want to beat each other as each other.

Over the years we've come up against her. Each year we are getting closer

to beating her. She's a tough opponent! Hopefully this year will

be one of those years. So far this week everything's been going great.

100% record up to the final and we hope we can keep it that way. The

ice conditions have been fantastic, girls are playing really well,

coaches behind us. We have a new team this season. Two girls have

joined me and Alice so it's been a brilliant season so far. We've

managed to jump up the world rankings into the top 32, which was

our goal this season. Hopefully this week we can end the season on a

high. I can't believe it's been three years since Sochi! I've had

things on Facebook pinging up saying it's three years since we won that

bronze medal. Time flies and since then I've been thinking about

getting better and better and going back there. Back to the final now.

When we left it, Muirhead was leading for micro-1. Fleming needs

this shot but could only manage a single to give the last stone back

to Muirhead. We pick it up again in the seventh end.

So, Lauren Gray out to second. It is over the front one, I think. Now, if

that red hit the barrier, which I'm sure it's going to, Freegard zone

will be in operation when it has to go back and be replaced. We've seen

a few of the girls being caught out with this outturn throw. Heading

down this way of the ice. Yes, a few mistakes there. And they've all been

pretty much over curling. So, good start, then, for Fleming in this

end. Can she build on it? Alice Spence. Good space between the two

reds, so we need Alice to clear a nice stone. A bit heavy at the

minute. The girls are not sweeping yet. An important shot, this one. If

she got one right round onto the burden, it would be double guarded.

That's not what the doctor ordered. A slack shot, really. Can't make too

many excuses for that at this stage of the game. Frustrating for the

skip, too. Anywhere short... Yes. She will know that herself. She will

indeed. This gives the opportunity for Team Muirhead to start peeling.

And Hannah has to get on that long guard again. Hannah is gambling with

a Muirhead line shot here but she can't keep doing that. At some stage

she has to come into the rings, get rid of that Muirhead stone. Can't

afford to leave it lying there. So a rough opportunity to build an end

here has probably gone. But you can still see the peels. The girls are

very good at them. Removing the short stones. Near the centre line

but quite close together. They might try to get rid of both of these.

They were trying hard to sweep that onto the centre line and keep them

parallel with one another. That makes the doubles harder to take. I

think she was just taking one, actually. The one with Adams. I

think she's just going for the single peel. Probably decided she

doesn't have to do anything too difficult at the minute. There's no

point trying to play the big shot when you don't really need it and if

you do make a mistake it will count against you, so... Not sure where

that could have gone wrong other than getting a bit thin and driving

onto the yellow perhaps. That's why we are sitting up here. Exactly!

Another guard called. Cover on the shot in-house and also trying to get

something on the centre line. That's over curled a bit. Shot in the house

is visible. Should see a good two thirds of it. You can see... Yes.

Has to be careful as well. Doesn't want to overthrow this and catch it

and drive it onto the other side. The safe side is the inside and the

new peel it anyway. So does want to be on the wide side. In fact, I

think they will take the guard. Not taking any chances. Now looking for

the double peel. Lots of opportunities of different chances

here. Going for it this time, anyway. Has been asked to take the

double peel if she can. Just missed that.

Well, Jennifer Dodds has a chance to put on a better one. Last one was a

bit off-line. Still enough to force Muirhead to wait appeal but she

would like this one a bit of a better guard. Looks higher but they

will have to sweep it to get it to the centre and as they are sweeping

is getting closer and closer... Now what will Muirhead do? She can

certainly hit the red in the rings and she could live two shots after

this, which would mean leaving the short one in the centre, though. Try

the double curl. OK, she's going to try to get rid of

both these reds. Three quarters, left-hand side, drive it onto the

right-hand side of back one. A bit of extra weight on this. Maximum

action on the stones when they meet. A single peel, is it? Yeah. She

managed to hold it. Well, now Fleming... Just another look. She's

just deciding what she wants to do and what ice she's going to take.

Can't afford to throw another guard now. Gives Muirhead too good a

chance of making the two, which she can't afford. Will be hoping, of

course, they get a chance on the last one to come around the short

red stone in the centre line. May not get that chance, but if anything

else, she wants to force Muirhead to take one.

Keeping them separated prevents Eve from having the opportunity of a

double. They are going to have to work this one. Looks like it is

curling a lot. They held that well. Pretty good, actually. Got it right

in behind. One lucky. Good shot from Fleming. Now a decision, does Eve

try to go for the shot, fully in the house, or try to run back on the

centre one? You go to the one in. You can lie assured that way and

Fleming has got to remove it. -- you can lie short.

They are playing a down weight, not a full strike. Should have the

chance for the sweepers to control the stone going down the ice. Seems

to curl. That's the live for short, which it is not going to do. That is

a mistake. Here is the chance I mentioned that Hannah Fleming was

relishing, the chance to get a draw right round the top of the button.

Potential stealing situation here for Fleming, if she can now this

one. I'll and we do know that when you come across the line, you take a

huge pool, so she has got to make sure she gets right out to the brush

and gives it every opportunity to come past the guard and let the

girls sweep it in behind. A mistake from Muirhead, though, if she can

lie short at all, Fleming will try to lie two, not presenting any great

problem to Muirhead, but maybe now the chance to turn the screws a

little bit. These are the shots that Hannah is really going to have two

nail, to put the pressure on to Muirhead. A little bit slack, but

she has turned it round in these last few ends. Looking good. The

line looks great. Wants it to stop. Just a little bit heavy, Jackie.

Really unfortunate, there. Huge pool coming across. If it had just

stopped there, but a couple of feet it ran on and then you just see it

peeking out the other side. Muirhead can now play a straight draw to it,

still not easy but easier than having to play a little tap to get

shot. The danger on what she goes for, we can see her here, taking the

choice, she's going to play the run back. I thought she would play the

draw. If she didn't make the draw properly and caught the top guard

she would be pushing it in for second shot. Would be sure to be in

the rings if she could make it? Could make the first one slightly on

the left and the one of the right-hand side of the back, she

would get a little role that way. I thought she would take on the draw.

It's not that hard. She's going after this. Can only think it is a

short draw, if she can nail it. She's going after it. Has she done

it? She has just jammed at the back one. There is the steal. She had a

go at it. A bold call. The draw looked like the shot, to me, but

many just didn't read that contact, there. It is a big steal of one for

Fleming. Seven ends in and it is Muirhead four, Fleming, three. We'll

be back for the climax of the Scottish women's curling

Championships in a few minutes. If you walk into any rink anywhere on

the ward, one of the major factors to deal with any work in this sport

is the surface of the ice. The ice is a really big factor and we are

lucky emperor to have good conditions brought the team is

playing the Scottish Championships. The ice man, he's up propping up

really early at half past five every morning, this week. Lots of people

think it is just a sheet of playing nice with four stones going up and

down but there's a lot of signs behind it. Playing nice is different

from skating and ice. It is harder. They have pebbles in the eyes, and

they walk up and down with a watering can and create small bumps

on the ice. That affects how much the Stones travel on the ice. I'm

how much they curl. Curling ice needs to be different to skating

ice. It means to be perfectly level. If the stone was travelling on

skating ice it would only travel a couple of metres and it without so

much friction it would not be able to go that far. It melts the top of

the table, the sweeping, so that can keep the stone travelling slightly

straighter. It is called the roaring game because of the noise that the

stone makes when it is travelling on the ice. Let's return now to the

closing stages of the final. Team Muirhead leads 4-3 in the eighth

end. 63%, not that good at the minute, but she desperately needs an

nice draw, here. To sit right on top of the yellow. She will have to bump

it. She will need to make sure that she is using it as protection.

Pretty good shot. Three guards on, so it is clean-up time for Muirhead,

straight out front, as she is. Vicki Adams to make the peel. If you are

put -- playing 77% at the moment, 80% on drawers. She is very strong

in that apartment, Vicki. Great second player, the strength of the

second players to clean up. You want someone lots of power and accuracy

to get rid of those annoying stones out front. She is a bit of an expert

on most. These players come into their own and the last few ends when

they are asked to play the shots. -- these shots. They just want to see

Team Fleming piling in the Reds, here. She has got to get stones and

play to get something set up for another stone. -- in play. Just the

guard again. And just a simple peel again. This could be dangerous.

Could leave a short one. This will just be a simple peel shot. She will

try to drive this back into the already play. It was a single peel

but nearly got something else. That was a nice try. Four stones in

play all round about the four foot, covering the one foot. Again, asking

for another centre guard, Anna Sloan. Wonder how were long this can

go on for? The stones in the house lying pretty well for Fleming. She's

got to be careful and switch her attention from the straight peels.

This is coming a bit deeper. And the chance, now, to rumble things

around. Certainly is. That has come up to close, so it makes the job

easier trying to get that read on the left and the yellowing behind

them enter the Reds. Anna Sloan getting her weight behind this one.

Nice shot. That will clean things up a lot, made things a lot better from

a Muirhead point of view. Just slightly overthrown the guard from

Jennifer Dodds made this a lot more simple. Muirhead with two in the

rings. Anna is playing very well here. She missed the first part of

the season after having a fall in the summertime last year and having

to get a cruciate ligament operation in her niece. It's really nice to

see her settle back in and playing the shots that we know she can play.

Absolutely. Fleming would love to throw a guard here but she can't

afford to throw with your head with two stones in the house. She mustn't

risk losing two here. Jennifer Dodds, playing 79% at the moment.

Trying to play the run back, here. Two reds in the house, and she does.

All was going to be quite close together. Looks good from Muirhead's

point of view. 69% for Anna Sloan. Drawers, 71. Get

a good double, here, if she can. And she has just about got it. How far

is that going to go? It is still a short position. That was a break for

Fleming. That was unfortunate. She could have left a simple double for

Fleming to take away, but this is a great opportunity to check the

yellow out there on the left, and you need the peels to come second.

Yes, she needs the inside role. She must lie two after this. Needs to

get the inside of this yellow to get a little role in towards the centre.

Is it going to swing enough? Didn't quite do it. She had to get inside

that yellow at the top centre. She played a nice weight to allow it but

she overthrew it and didn't give it a chance to come in, so the momentum

swings back to Team Muirhead. If Eve can remove this and lie two she can

certainly put the pressure on. She can try to force the nine and go

down the ten with the hammer. A score of two would be big and would

negate that steel that she gave up in the last end. Playing a down

weight here. Just looking for the nose.

Well, it rolled. If it rolled another few centimetres it wasn't

going to be in second shot position, but they just managed to hold it. So

Muirhead does lie two. Well called by Anna. Eve was wanting them to

clean that stone but she could see that it was drawing all the time.

That does look like it is two yellows for Team Muirhead. That's

going to be a freeze for Fleming, the one that Muirhead just played.

Looking at the double, that is a tough double to take. Does she think

it was a double and being able to hold the shooter off the back of the

other red, trying to lie two? It is a tough double. You would

definitely, I think, lose one of your reds. Draws at 56, that is why

she doesn't fancy the draw. I think it should be a draw, but maybe just

not the confidence to do it. She could completely kill this end if

she played a lovely draw and sat on the T-line. Quite a big angle to

make here from one yellow onto the other. Not easy. Very difficult to

judge. Quite a long way away from that one, really. I didn't like the

call. And there is the result. An open hit from Muirhead. Well, big,

big shot now from Muirhead. The score, 4-3. That's the read that's

got to go, if she can replace that one and score two she will be three

shots up with just two ends remaining, so this is big.

So, hit for two. It is always nice to hear, "Clean" and "Easy",

absolutely no mistakes there. Classy shot. And a nice score of two from

either. She stamps her authority on this game again. Eight ends in and

it is Muirhead six, Fleming three. Muirhead continued to pile on the

pressure in the ninth end, and as we rejoin play, she is taking on a high

tariff double takeout. Well, I don't think I called that

one. She makes in, fantastic shot. It's relentless, really. What a

great end played by Team Muirhead. They've not put a foot wrong. She

has left her corner, and I think you would have to go and use it again.

Yes. The problem is now, she uses the corner, she is leaving your

headline short, and inevitably she can't get short by lying in the

corner, but inevitably, she can call a time-out. -- she is leaving your

head lying short. Nancy Smith just appearing.

Gathering her thoughts. She will have been thinking about it on the

way down, seeing what she will recommend to the team.

There are several different strategies you can play here. What

you want to try and do is make it most difficult for the opposition to

play. There's not many of these shots that Eve Muirhead can't play.

So, what have the team decided? Again, this is another big call for

Hannah Fleming, and not a lot of margin for error. The other thing

she could have done is play for the blank N. But that would mean only

one end remaining and she would have to make three just forced the extra.

I think she's right to have a go at this. She's moving the line here she

should try to stop it and come on the top of it. Try to work the

bounce. Actually, that's not a bad shot. It should still be a simple

shot for leave to remove both of these. The line was good, it was

just a weight issue. Just under through it a little bit. So no

opportunity for Muirhead to lie two. She will be trying the nose hit or

half of that read, to try to make sure the red disappears. And all

that Fleming will be able to do is come away with a score of one, or a

blank. So, some straightforward stuff from Muirhead, here, and once

again, and our Fleming just not able to produce the Serb -- the perfect

shot. Everything goes, in fact. Does Hannah Fleming think she's more

chance of stealing and two or scoring a three?

I think she's probably going to take her one, here. Early in the first

couple of ends you saw Hannah Fleming with opportunities where she

was lying a lot and Eve had to finish it off, but asking her to

take a three against Team Muirhead at this stage in the game, it's a

big ask. Neither is going to be easy in the last end, to take the three

or steal a two. Jee think she's going to take one and reduce the

deficit to two, but give up the last stone in doing so? -- do you think.

She's playing the draw. The slight advantage of that is that at least

you get to throw first at the next end and you can pull the corner

guard stones down the centre line and have a few stones in play before

the stealing stars. So, nicely done. Takes a single point. Couldn't do

any more than that. Would have liked to have done so, but had to be held

to a single. That meant Fleming went into the last end, trailing 4-6.

So difficult for Fleming to build up anything threatening here, when the

centre line is clear. And those two tick shots from Lauren Gray making

sure that that was the case. Unfortunately she's not trying to

steal just one, she's trying to steal two. It doesn't just make it

twice as difficult. But she has got some stones in play and at some

stage she will have to use those. She would rather be drawing round

stones on the centre line, but in the absence of those, she'll have to

make use of something that is there, and that is the corner guards, try

to make a couple with the last one, try to play Pershore. This is

Jennifer Dodds' first stone. Three to come for Fleming after that one.

Both teams playing the shots that they have do. But each time the

opposition counteracts what is required by the opposition. For

every shot that Team Fleming play, Team Muirhead are just removing.

Playing 100% at the moment in this last end. Yes, faultless play. And

now we will see Fleming have to do something a little bit different.

Three stones to come, she's got to count two of them so she has to get

these into the rings. Still a change of tactics here. She is going to

come down into the house. We know that there is a lovely draw on,

around this corner. Comes off the centre line, over the hauf line.

Nicely played from Jennifer Dodds. That looks well in behind, I think.

Perhaps just a little bit of it showing. Not a lot, but Anna Sloan

board try to pick this one out, the one in the rings, but failing that

making sure that she gets the guards and opens it up. And she has picked

it out. Great stuff, Jackie, you have to say. These girls have got

confidence now in this last end, here. I think they can see the

finishing line. Slightly tighter ice now for Hannah

Fleming. Same shot, though. Let's see if she can make a better job of

it. Fleming steadied herself. First two

this end. She must get this. If this catches the guard, is going

to be all over. She had to get that one in hand means to steal two. I

think it is going to be game over. It is indeed. Hands are being

offered. And this appointment for Hannah Fleming once more. Another

bridesmaid situation. And Eve Muirhead and her team march on.

Another Scottish Championship title. They will go on to represent

Scotland in the women's World Championships in Beijing next month.

And you have to say, richly deserve. A couple of mistakes early on, but a

pretty professional performance altogether. Congratulations,

Scottish champions. That feels pretty good, right? That's my first

Scottish Championship and it was a great team performance and I am

delighted. It certainly was a great team performance. Vicky, you have
