Quarter-finals - Part 3 Snooker: Welsh Open

Yes, welcome back to Friday night at the Welsh Open, and the quest for a

place in the semifinals. If you were with us earlier you will have seen

Stuart Bingham take a 1-0 lead against the man ranked at number 55,

Stuart Carrington. Then on, Stuart Bingham was cruising, into a 4-0

lead and one frame from victory. Carrington pulled two frames back

and we join it with Stuart Bingham 4-2-macro up. Your commentators are

Darren Morgan and Rob Walker. Well, it looked for all the world at

the interval as though when they resumed, with Stuart Bingham four

frames up, Stuart Carrington's spell in the quarterfinals at the Welsh

Open was going to be very brief. But he got one on the board with breaks

of 38 and 45 to go 4-1. And then a Mr black from Stuart Bingham when it

looked as though he was going to get over the line allowed the

26-year-old from Grimsby to get back in and halve the deficit for- two, a

really spirited response to a desperate situation for Carrington.

But at the start of this frame, Stuart Carrington was bold and went

for a big opening read -- red. So once again, a little momentum shift

here. Just as Stuart Bingham was beginning to get a bit shifty in his

seat, he is now at the table again, and he will be absolutely desperate

not to allow this match to last any longer than it needs to, especially

knowing, Darren Morgan, that he could have had this wrapped up but

for missing the black in the previous frame. Absolutely. And even

though he was on that red into the middle pocket and it went OK, you

just can't believe that. All of the hard work was done and it was all

over. He did not miss hit it, he just missed it by a long way. So

second time lucky with this last shot. He tried to play this the

previous time, going for the two reds and he missed it. He was lucky

to leave one into the centre. You would have to say, if this was

before the interval, this would have been end of the match. The way he

played the first three and a half frames, anyway, certainly.

Obviously, it has gone a little bit edgy for him. Stuart Carrington,

pulling two frames back. He is leaving himself on the black half

ball to go into the cluster of reds. With the red to the left of the

black, that is going into the cluster, dragging the cue ball back

a futures. -- a few inches. That was similar to the one that he missed

but this time, no problems. If he is on the red... He wanted to get into

the red is a bit fatter than that, disturb them a bit is tight.

If it is that tight, he can pot it with the right-hand side, just

turning the ball over a little bit. Well, that was fortunate, to find

the plant. He picked that one out. Stuart Bingham, the world number

two. He made the semifinals here at the Welsh when we were over at the

Newport Centre in 2013. He may have thought, during the mid-session

interval, that he was one frame away from a whitewash. All credit to

Stuart Carrington for forcing his way back into the match from such a

truly desperate situation. But Stuart Bingham will want to

close this door before the belief grows any further in his opponent.

And another error! The black in the preceding frame, and the 2015 world

champion is having a little bit of a wobble here. And every time he does

so, Stuart Carrington 's resolve grows. What a match this is turning

out to be. Yes, when he picked out the plant, I thought it was all over

again. It just shows you the difference with getting on the right

or the wrong side of the blue. He was dead straight on it. If he had

had a slight angle he could have stunned down to the reds and it

would have been unmissable. Obviously it was awkward playing

with the rest and he had to play it with pace to stun through. Stuart

Carrington will be quite happy, but he has the same problem. He is using

the rest. It was an easy pot but the

positional side was harder. He forced it around the ankles, and he

needed the cue ball to slow down. I can't understand why he played

around it instead of off one cushion and up and down.

REFEREE: Touching ball. A reprieve. Food for thought for Stuart Bingham.

He must have been as certain as you can be that he had -- that he would

already be having a bite to eat, after his post-match press

conference. The touching ball enabling Stuart

Carrington to avoid a difficult shot. And at what stage, Darren,

despite the fact that he still leads 4-2, at what stage will Stuart

Bingham start to get a little bit edgy? Well, I think it's fair to say

that that stage has already come and gone, and the black he missed in the

frame before, he could play it 100 times and never miss it.

After he picked out that plant, he missed another red that he would

probably pot eight out of. And again, he has played a really poor

shot there. He played it as a shock to nothing and he hit it way too

thick, so this is a wobble. The thing is, if Stuart Carrington can

win this frame, he played that plant as a shock to nothing, but hit it a

bit thick. But this is starting to get a bit worrying for Stuart

Bingham. But obviously, Stuart Carrington has got to take these

chances. These balls are absolutely perfect. OK, he is a long way behind

in the frame. At 4-3, it is anybody's match. Which

is absolutely amazing, when you think that Stuart Carrington had

only three points to his name across the first four frames of the match.

We have had some big comebacks this week. Mark Davis, coming from way

behind to beat Ronnie O'Sullivan, who was here as defending champion,

having won a fourth Welsh Open crown 12 months ago. But this really would

be the best of the week so far. A little tester now. Into the left

centre. Straight into the heart of the

pocket. And he has settled right down now, Stuart Carrington. He was

a completely different player before the into. Stuart Bingham, at the

moment, has been helping his cause slightly. He has to sit in his

chair. This will be painful for him, because he knows he should have won

by now. You just never know, in this great

sport. Where and when will the great

comebacks start? Well, it is much better on the pot

success. Earlier in the match was up 33%, because Stuart Carrington had

only had three opportunities to pot a red.

At one stage, the points deficit was over 370, I think. That's a bit more

like it, if you are in the Stuart Carrington fan club.

Well, that one has gone wrong. He has struggled a little bit all might

with the pace of this table. He has just lost the cue ball. He has

played all of his matches on the outside tables. This table is

playing much faster than them. And I am sure if that shot had been on the

outside table, he would have been on these reds perfect. He is still on

the red. But it is a lot thinner than he would have liked. Now, is he

going to play it in a confident manner? I think he can get to the

potting angle. He is just making sure it will pass the other one to

the corner pocket. If he is feeling really confident and good, he will

not play this with pace. He will be playing for blue, or one of the

baulk colours. Well, it just clipped the red. So he

did play positively and with confidence but the red clipped the

other one, so it would not go. You just see the other red move, so it

changed the path of the red he played. Well, Stuart. He really

cooked that one. He played for the black but he landed on the pink.

Still a little bit nervy. He will be desperate to get over the line. And

to set up his semifinal place. It is all going to be now, red to

colour, colour to that last red against the cushion. He is going to

be a little further from this red then he would have liked, off this

black. He overscrewed by about four inches.

Taking his time over this one. He knows how important this is.

And maybe that indicates the change in mindset from Stuart Bingham.

Pre-interval, he would have gone for that with no hesitation at all. But

now, he is aware he is in a match. Don't get me wrong, this could work

out to his favour, but Stuart Bingham, world number two, for him,

that was a really strange shot. He could now come off the cushion, hit

the red, go safe. Stuart Bingham will not get another chance in this

frame. That was his chance to win frame and match. That was a real

strange decision. But it could land up being the right decision. We will

soon find out. I have to say, especially now the

blue has come towards seven, he may have made the wrong choice.

Uncomfortable moments the Stuart Bingham. Quit on that shot, and you

would even have to say now that, even though Stuart Carrington is ten

points behind in this frame... He is in control.

I was going to say, as long as he plays a good safety, and he has.

That is very good. Just cannot believe that Stuart

Bingham refused that black. From a position of absolute strength

in this match, the world number two has displayed just a couple of

frailties there. And what a chance this is.

4-0. Should be about to become 4-3. And who would have thought that at

the mid-session interval? Amazing. Well, you were right, Darren.

Assuming there is no issue with this clearance from Carrington, that lack

of conviction from Stuart over that black has allowed Stuart Carrington

an opportunity. And the longer this match goes, the

more frustrated the 2015 world champion will become.

It looked for all the world that the interval as if he would already be

having a meal after his press conference now, and suddenly, Stuart

Bingham has been dragged into a real battle here. A battle for tomorrow's

semifinals. O! But will he have one more chance

to secure a 5-2 win? And a wry smile there. It was a fantastic

opportunity. But only if he closed it out.

What a let off therefore Stuart Bingham. -- and let off

he will be relieved he is still in the Spain.

Stuart Carrington has got himself back into this match. If he loses

this frame and the match, he will be hurting for a little while.

How many more twists of drama does this frame and this match hold?

Well, he needs that cue ball to run, and has it come? It has, it has

sniggered. Well, well, well. Just about to say, here's looking at me,

he is looking up at the guards, he has had a massive result. Because at

the moment, Stuart is completely gone. He is in panic mode out there.

He is just desperate to get over the line any which way he can. Real

unfortunate, this, for Stuart Carrington, to be faced with a

snooker. He has left the green.

It is not easy. Just asking for that cue ball to be

cleaned by Ben Williams. It has all got a little bit nervy.

Can he take this chance? This chance to finish the match, that he would

have thought would have been over at least half an hour ago.

Seven. So, he is almost there.

Just the blue, to be certain. The blue that came to his rescue.

Denied Stuart Carrington what would have been an easy green and this

frame. And it is not there! The world number two has become so

nervous, and how the tables have turned in this match. In confidence

and composure. Yes, and he played the more

difficult shot. The shot he could play all day long, chipping the blue

back into the middle pocket. He is just not thinking straight at the

moment as well. Well, that is OK, that safety shot.

I can't believe that Stuart Carrington did not have a go at

that. He goes for the blue and pops the blue, gets on the pink. It would

have hurt Stuart Bingham so much more.

I'm not even sure many people in the crowd for the match would still be

going at this time. Two hours, 22 minutes on the board. A real treat

for the neutrals here. Stuart is going to need that black

and could play a clever little shot here. A blue half ball. More for

that black across the corner pocket. He might try and decide to play the

blue up and down the spots, tried to put the cue ball in behind the

black. He has got an opportunity to move this black.

And I would say that is a great shot. Not sure if Stuart can get

through to this blue. Know, and he is having a little look

to see if he can come off the side cushion and pot this blue. This will

be an interesting one. One thing he doesn't want to do is miss

completely. That was a clever shot by Stuart Carrington. I thought he

would maybe move the black the other way. But obviously, you always run

the risk there. The blue was always going close to that corner pocket.

He didn't get a cue ball. That it on. -- left it on.

The longest frame of the match so far. We have had another one. Around

the same sort of time frame, 27-28 minutes.

He has played this role on. And that's OK.

Needed to be a good safety shot, and it was. 85% safety success for

Stuart Bingham, and Stuart Carrington's has grabbed up over 80

as well. -- crept up. What an intriguing contest this has

turned out to be. From a stage where, at one time, it

looked as if it was almost going to be an embarrassing defeat for Stuart

Carrington. Absolutely far from it now.

That was a good shot. You can guarantee you wouldn't have been too

happy playing that with the way he is feeling at the moment.

Stuart Carrington, having a long, hard think about this.

He has done so well to get any kind of foothold in this match. And

here's close to turning this into a genuine contest. -- he is close. For
