Scottish Cup Quarter-Final Highlights - Saturday Sportscene

Where would you rather be? Travelling away or staying at home?

The teams in this rant have won the Scottish cup 79 times. The away team

is, not so many. They travel in the hope of causing an upset. Patrick

won it once, nearly a century ago. They are at Aberdeen. Hamilton have

never won it. Today they went to Ibrox.

Would we see away day dreams come true? What would the Scottish cup

quarterfinals bring home comforts? That is outstanding. It is an

absolute beauty. It is unbelievable. Unbelievable. What a finish. Time

for heroes. It is not a dream, it is reality. Home or away, soap opera

guaranteed in the sixth round of the Scottish cup. Ford ties this week

and, to today, two tomorrow and with us tonight are two pundits, Michael

Stewart and Stephen Thomson. We started the quarterfinal action at

eastern Road after the long, long with the Scottish cup glory,

Hibernian hoping to make it two triumphs in a row. Ayr United in

their way. Lehman McLeod was watching. Three championship teams

left in the drawer and at least one of them will be semifinalists as to

collide here. The league leaders Hibernian against the basement

battle an honest man. However, I United have been here twice this

season and they are unbeaten. Darren McGregor is suspended thanks to two

bookings collected in the game with hearts in the last round. Jordan

Vorster returns to the fold. There is a debut for Ambrose on loan from

Celtic. The former striker, Alegue is out. The visitors have a lengthy

injury list. Craig Murtagh is the team. Nobody has won more Scottish

cup games in recent times than Hibernian. Their last defeat came

against Falkirk almost two years ago. They will fancy their chances

of reaching the 30th semi. There are 26 points between the two of them

from the top of the table to ninth place Ayr United in the

championship. There has been enough in recent results to suggest this

will be no walk in the park for the winners from last season. They have

not been in the best of form in the league. Stephen has got it through

the Maginn using a really useful area. Twisting and turning, a good

ball in. Here is Maginn again. Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. An

international class player produces an international class goal and

Hibernian lead on seven minutes. The holders do not want to give out that

this trophy. This is a piece of brilliance from McGinn. We know he

is more than capable of it. Another example of his shining star.

Narrowing this one away from the grass with Greg Fleming. It is

Hibernian 1-0 in the infancy of this game.

Through Boyle, who has been in terrific form. Was that inside the

box? It was. A penalty for Hibernian. The ire United manager

does not agree with this decision. It was Meggatt who found Martin

Boyle who pickpocketed him. That looks just inside. It looks just

inside. It is a Hibs spot kick. Jason Cummings will take it. 11

minutes only have been played, but Jason Cummings has a huge chance to

push him is even closer to the semifinals. In it goes. This time

might be done already. An excellent penalty from Hibernian's top scorer.

19 for the season. Ian McCall puffs out his cheeks. Little wonder. This

might already be away from his team. Not even 12 minutes in and it is 2-0

to Hibernian. Shinnie with the corner.

He steals himself away from Doherty with support from Boyle. His

tenacity led to the penalty. A big with support from Boyle. His

chance again, this time it is Shinnie. This time Fleming makes the

save. A late challenge by Forster who has got himself in the book.

Grab hold teeing up against Shinnie. Almost in for Hibernian's third.

Where is that going? I think there was a little panic

there are as it began to drop. Bala Tony looked as though he could

make a good recovery there, but Walsh, ... There it was. A quick

free kick by McGinn. Hibs could be in for the third. Boyd went down and

there is a flag which spares Ayr United. If he is not offside it is

another penalty. He is on south there, actually, Martin Boyle.

The Ayr United have something in them? A cross from Craig McGaughey.

That is unbelievable. They are not done yet, you know. That is an

absolutely stunning goal. The 19-year-old Craig McGaughey on the

left food, top corner. He has brief new life into the honest men here.

You don't get much better than that. A collector 's's item.

McGinn is absolutely cleaned out. Nick Walsh goes to his pocket. It is

a red cloud for Scott Mckenna. Ayr United got themselves back into this

game by virtue of a moment of magic, but that is horrendous from Scott

Mckenna. Nick Walsh blows for half-time. It is Hibernian who are

won the gold band one man up at the interval despite the heroics from

McGaughey. John McGinn with a superb goal of his own giving Hibernian

elite. At half-time it is Hibernian 2-1 Ayr United. Now, McGaughey was

ransacked there. Boyle is in the middle. It is Shinnie. That is a

terrific block there by Dan or Megan. It looked like Hibs were

going to score a third. This tie is still alive.

Another very important intervention from Meggatt. The former Queens Park

player. A corner only for Hibernian, but they are seizing the initiative

back again. The initiative they have had in the score line for a while.

Andrew Shinnie. Ambrose almost. You just feel like a third Hibs goal

would finish off Ayr United once and for all. Ambrose must have thought

he was opening his account there. He doesn't score many. Just evaded him.

Was that a handball from Ambrose? Was it handball? Doherty was

aggrieved and perhaps rightly so, because he is in on goal. It doesn't

hit Ambrose, Doherty is in. It has opened up for Commons. -- Cummings.

That would have rubbed salt in Ayr United's gaping wounds. At the other

end, Ambrose on the edge of his own box.

Martin Boyle against his namesake Paddy Boyle. What a good save that

was. That looked like Meggatt was going into his own goal as he did

against Aberdeen in the League Cup earlier this season. That is a

terrific save. McGinn is back on it. An important ball by the big keeper.

John McGinn, a chance house to wrap it up for Hibs. Just got away from

him. Boyd. That would have been some goal. Martin Boyle. Just got away

from John McGinn. Mark Boyle just offside. Jason Cummings who, at the

moment, is putting Hibs through to the semifinal. That penalty made it

2-0. 19 for the season now. Keatings will come on.

There is Shinnie. Stevenson. Hibernian are probing here and

finishing. James Keatings is just on and he will surely ensure the

finishing. James Keatings is just on passage of Hibernian as the game to

go back to back. An inspired piece of management by Neil Lennon.

He meant that cleanly, a lovely header from a lovely ball in, and

the keeper didn't have an answer. This is Holt, and Keatings again.

Lovely ball in, and it is still alive for Hibs, and Grant Holt's

header off the line. Grant Holt, almost making it four here. Good

defending by Paddy Boyle, and this has been a decent enough Ayr United

performance. In particular in the second half they have looked pretty

solid, which will perhaps bode well for the battles that lie ahead.

Keating 's flashing one buyer. He has a point to prove quite clearly,

has James Keatings. -- Keatings flashing one by. Keatings has had a

good few pops at goal since coming on, more effort than Jason Cummings

on, more efforts than Jason Cummings did the whole time he was on.

The dream is still on as Hibs go chasing back-to-back Scottish Cups.

James Keatings made absolutely sure from the bench with a header to make

it 3-1. Ian McCall's side showing plenty of it. The red card shown to

Scott McKenna just before the interval did not help. Back to 2-1,

after the John McGinn added to by a James Keatings penalty. 3-1. Very

proud of the team, got the reaction I wanted from Wednesday. Very

excited about taking on a club, a new club, if you can call it that,

to hand them. We have teams in the draw still with great pedigree and

tradition and we want to be part of that. We have handled the game very

well. Proving this season, for us anyway, to be at not to crack. I was

pleased with the effort we put in. Could not have asked for any more.

The sending-off was a huge call, I have been told it looked like

ascending off but I have not seen it yet. After that it was really

difficult. And promotion is the big prize at the end of the season but

back-to-back Scottish Cups would be a good achievement? Yes, as long as

we get promotion. I would take that any day of the week, but we are in

the competition, down to the last four. You hope to get the lock of

the competition, down to the last the draw, but Hamblin, have been

there in semifinals, won and lost, and anything can happen, but the

fact that we are going there is very exciting for me -- but Hampden, have

been there. What was your take on the Efe Ambrose incident? It looked

like a handball, but also with the NLP, I would love to see where the

first contact was made for that, so all of these decisions went against

us but it may turn out to be right. We will get to the moment he was

referring to their very shortly but, Michael, a convincing enough

victory? Wasn't the right score line? I think so. Neil Lennon spoke

about how they have struggled to beat Tal Gaysum the season well they

have been beaten at Easter Road and drawn before. They went into that

game making sure he had the team drilled into their mind it was a big

one they had to win and I think he summed it up great. He would give it

all up, the cup, to get promoted. But now he's in that last four it is

an exciting addition to be in. Steven, some absolutely fantastic

goals? Yes, John McGinn, my old team-mate, with the first, getting a

decent cross into the box, then coming back out it was surprising to

see him hit this with his right foot. In all the years I played and

trained with him he never really used his right foot, very

predominately left footed. But he has had an excellent season for Hibs

and I would be surprised if he is not in the Scotland squad. He takes

it across his body very well. Another big performance today. He

has been a pivotal player for for. And one of the best young players he

has ever worked with? Yes, I great knock down. A great knock-down. Half

volley just rising and as soon as it left his boot you could sense it was

going in. You could stick two keepers in there. I do not even know

why the goalkeeper dives, to be honest. To make it look better. No

doubt, the goal of the round so far. Of the tournament perhaps. Right in

the top corner. At that stage, Tal Gaysum would be thinking it was game

on, back to 2-1, in a good position. on, back to 2-1, in a good position.

-- at that stage Tal -- Ayr would be thinking it was game on. This is an

absolutely wild challenge. Every time I see it, I wince. Then it

clips the back of John 's head. Just for good measure. An obvious red

card. He has not been heard that hard in a long time. Not since the

LAUGHTER As far as the heart of handball

incident from Evie and -- as far as the handball incident with Efe

Ambrose goes, what do you think? It is a handball but not deliberate.

You would be calling for that all day long. If that is in the middle

of the park, though, nine times out of ten it would be given. So it is a

handball? And seeing nine times out of ten in the middle of the park

that would be given but I am saying it is not a handball. By the rules

of the game. It is not deliberate. From Ayr's perspective, if something

happens regularly you would be disappointed if it doesn't happen to

you. I think it is hands down. Hands down by his side. You just said it

was, in the middle of the park. LAUGHTER

I am more confused than ever! You might be confused but I am pretty

sure everyone at home as quickly. Let's hope so! In the end James

Keatings comes off the bench and scores within virtually two minutes

of being on. Is a luxury for Hibs, in the Championship, that they are

able to carry on. What a ball in from David Gray. So inviting. He

claims is run well and rise as well for the header, but what an inviting

ball for a striker to head in. You are right. A great luxury to be able

to bring a player of his calibre off the bench, and Jason Cummings

getting his 19th of the season. You can hear the fans singing, you

recall, two in a row. We are talking about Hibs as potential winners of

the Scottish Cup this year, two years in a row. And they have the

calibre of players to really go for it. You heard him saying they wanted

the luck of the draw. Every team will be trying to avoid Celtic if

they get through. Are you trying to say that Simone cannot get a result?

Realistically, for Hibs, they want other teams getting into the

semifinal. They are a top quality side and again, that last four, it

is anybody's now. The weekend began at Ibrox with Rangers still without

a permanent manager. Hamilton had beaten Aberdeen on Tuesday. Your

commentary comes from Tom Mitchell. COMMENTATOR: Following their first

league win against Rangers since March 1954, and Rangers have picked

on Hamilton ever since they were knocked out of the Scottish Cup in

1987. Rangers beat St Johnstone midweek so for the first time and

unchanged Union have been named. Kenny Miller continues in attack. It

was a great win for Accies midweek against Aberdeen and today they were

without their suspensions. Renny Matthews is in goal. And Scott

McMann drops onto the pitch. -- the bench. 35-year-old John Beaton

referees, after taking charge of the League Cup final this season.

Underway at Ibrox in this quarterfinal. Back in 1987, 31 point

separated the sides. Coming into today, they are in the same league

and a mere 22 point separates them. An early injury. Colliding with his

own player. He took him out pretty impressively, Rakish Bingham, and I

am not sure he will thank him for it. Just urging the players around

him to calm down. Wallace wants movement and Barry Mackay is happy

to oblige. He is driving in, a lovely pass inside, a chance for

Rangers, and they should have scored. Straight at the goalkeeper,

saved with the foot. He was offside anyway. A golden chance for Rangers.

Barrie McKay was brilliant, he drove it all the way through. A little

flick in between, but Donati missed it. Too close the goalkeeper. He had

no chance. The ball hit for for Rakish Bingham

the chase. The goalkeeper uncertain, taking control just inside his area.

How close was this? That was well outside the box. It fell inside, he

had two hands on it but outside the area. He smuggled it back in. Back

to James Waghorn. Back it comes back for Kenny Miller! Brilliant effort

from Kenny Miller. Waghorn and Holt on the interchange. He knew where

Kenny Miller was and it is a stunning ball in, a little touch by

the goalkeeper as well. Great effort from Renny Matthews. -- Remi

Matthews. Skondras get it away. Holt is onside. Jon Toral with a chant!

Did he have it taken away from him? He did. The penalty is awarded.

Grant Gillespie complains, as does Michael Devlin. But John Beaton was

well positioned. A great ball in from Holt, he got the touch. It

seemed to be the knees of Grant Gillespie. At that angle, and at

that speed, it did look like a penalty. Gillespie was surprised.

Waghorn, 13 out of 15 from the spot for Rangers in his career. Rangers

get the opening goal in a Scottish Cup tie for the first time this

season. Having trailed against Greenock Morton and Motherwell. And

emphatic penalty kick from Greenock Morton and Motherwell. And

Waghorn. He scored from the spot against Inverness Caley Thistle and

he gets a similar result here. Away from Donati. Martyn Waghorn...

McKay, plenty in the box for Rangers, and Waghorn wants it back.

That was five. He worked himself into a really good position. Trying

to get inside off Craig Watson, and not far away. You would have to go

back more than 30 years to when Rangers last lost a Scottish Cup tie

their lead at half-time, and that was against Hearts. Stoppage time at

Ibrox. Wallace... Good defending by Watson. And there is the half-time

whistle at Ibrox. Martyn Waghorn's fine goal-scoring run against

Hamilton Accies continues. The half-time score is 1-0 to Rangers.

It will be a Scottish Cup debut for Joe Garner, and he replaces Kenny

Miller. The half-time substitute debuts.

Hamilton have lost their last three Scottish cup quarterfinal ties,

haven't won one since 1985 when they won 3-0. The trio here at Ibrox by

1-0. They drilled in both the last matches against Dunfermline

athletic. Matthews eventually the hero in the penalty shoot out. Three

out of three. Rangers now scored in 15 straight games. The problem has

been at the other end, they have kept only two clean sheets it is not

spelt. -- in bad spell. They had, knocked on, Garner scores.

Just over two minutes into his Scottish cup debut, he is on the

scoresheet. Keirin an almost on the mark as he went across and Garner

stepped in. Two men on the posts. Beautifully away from Blair Adams.

It is the perfect start to the second half and a perfect

substitution. Kenny Miller has been a goal scoring hero in the Scottish

cup, but the man who has replaced on the field replaces him on the

scoresheet as well. A header from Kiernan. Good strikers anticipate,

get to the right place at the right time. But it goes from Garner has

just taken the Temple out of the game. The. Gillespie, strong in the

tackle. Garner has really hurt Imre there and the referee has a decision

to make. It is amazing the number of players who scored goals and shortly

afterwards find themselves in the book. Imre stretched forward, Garner

came in, it wasn't the leg that kicked out that caused the problem,

it is the way his body fell through. Imre was off the ground. The Yellow

Card delivered. It is not a game of keep ball at the moment, it is

almost an exchange programme. Mackay plays it through, an opportunity for

Wallace. Great football from Rangers. A great spot by Mackay on

his own favourite right side. Lee Wallace scored his last dozen goes

all at Ibrox. He nearly made it 13 in a row. Waghorn is in the middle.

A chance for Garner. He just couldn't get the shot away as he

wanted. Here is Crawford. Doherty. Gillespie. On the Crawford. A great

ball in and an opportunity from Bingham. That is as close as

Hamilton have come. A great run from McMahon. He gave the show, a little

touch in from Bingham not far away. This was a great piece of play by

Rangers, lovely interchange. I just wonder if he needed that first

touch, Imre. Coming across. That is great defending.

Cormac was easily in. Clint Hill watches as the header gets powered

in. So many Rangers players free. That is a good save from Matthews.

Hill was unmarked. The Spaniard got ahead of them. Kiernan almost got

there. It has gone in. The shot was on target, so he will claim it. The

deflection beat the goalkeeper. The Scottish cup tie is over and Rangers

advance to the semifinal of the Scottish cup for the 63rd time.

Scott McMann is the unlucky defender and he sends it into the top of the

net. Not good marking and Scott McMann might find his man printed on

the scoresheet. Rangers driving again. Imre is having to do more and

more defending. Hamilton will be happy with how he has played. Clint

Hill. The first Scottish cup going for Rangers. Simple header into the

top corner. Hamilton are undone by the set play. He has been winning

things in the air all day. It ran off Watson and Matthews is a

spectator as it goes past him and Bingham on its way. A great header,

plenty of power into the top corner. Rangers are cruising their way into

O'Halloran making the Rhonda Head. O'Halloran making the Rhonda Head.

-- making the run ahead. Rangers seeking five. That won't help the

cause. Garner. A mistake from the

goalkeeper. Garner helps himself to a second goal of the afternoon. Some

of the players weren't even watching. Rangers assumed the keeper

was taking this away. Garner was alive and alert. One goal in his

last 14, now to today. Not clever by the keeper as Gillespie didn't read

it. The goalkeeper had no chance. It wasn't a great ball. Gillespie and

Matthews combined to set Rangers app. Garner with a simple finish.

5-0. Rangers 5-0 up. The record against Hamilton is 6-0 back in

February 19 99. Into the middle it goes. It is not well cleared. Can

Garner get the hat-trick? He can. It is the first-ever hat-trick in a

Scottish cup tie between Rangers and Hamilton. It belongs to Garner. A

second-half substitute, a second-half hat-trick. He hasn't

even been on the field for the whole second half. Mackay played it back,

Devlin started away, that is a calm, calm finish from Joe Garner. He has

made the difference in the second half. It has all gone wrong from

Hamilton. It is all gone right for Rangers. A little bit messy.

Matthews has seen six those fly-past. Man of the match being

awarded to Garner, that is no surprise. Just one goal in his last

14. Can this be the game that kick-starts his rangers goal scoring

form? The referee brings this match to a close. A place in the semifinal

emphatically secured by Rangers. The match ball and the man of the match

for Garner. It finishes at Ibrox, Rangers 6-0 Hamilton. A convincing

scoreline in the end. How convincing a performance? It was a very

convincing performance. In the first half they had the best of the game.

Didn't make the most of their dominance. They were second --

clinical in the second half. What an impact Garner made. Garner has

divided opinion. He had an interesting afternoon. If ever there

was an all action 45 minutes, this is it. Wild tackles, goes, it was

all here. That was his first head knock. He does well here to hold the

ball up and win a corner. This is only two minutes after coming on the

pitch. He has started to make an impact for the side and the scores

from the resulting corner. Great movement. Weak defending from

Hamilton. He reacts even before Kiernan gets his foot on it. He is

not a natural scorer. How does he escaped a red card? He is the only

person finding this funny because it is a wild challenge. His leg records

because of the force. Sometimes looking at a different angle makes a

difference but every angle on this is mental. How he thinks that is the

Yellow Card, it is beyond belief. It is a red card all day long. This

looked like a nasty head knock. He was of the huge for 11 minutes

getting stitches. And all action swashbuckling performance from him.

He should have hit the first time, he takes a touch. This is

horrendous. Matthews makes it far too easy. I thought he slipped. The

Hamilton defendant was so bad all day. When you think about how well

they defended against Aberdeen, resolutely. It was the opposite

defensively. They were all over the place. Video assisted referees are

on the horizon. If we had video referees hate your day would that

have prevented this decision? Yes, I think it would have. It is a

difficult call for the referee. The linesman has got to get it right.

When it happens so quickly. When the freeze if it is clearly outside the

box. That changes the course of the game. It is a difficult one. When he

is in yellow and so is the ball, but needs to be looked at. Would it

change this decision? This is all down to whether you think there is

enough pressure in the tackle with his foot on top of the other foot, I

don't think there is enough impact on it. It doesn't alter his stride.

I think the referee gives it four when his arm is around him at the

site. It isn't for when he stood on his. Even then I don't think there

is enough food for it. That becomes so subjective whether there is

enough force on his foot. I don't think that is, so it is subjective.

The first one with the goalkeeper, that is a definitive, the video

breath sees that, makes the right call. Yellow strip, yellow ball,

that shouldn't be allowed. It was difficult to see it. Yellow gloves

as well. They have to change the colour of the strip for the ball. We

touched on the Hamilton defendant earlier. It was terrible at times.

This is marking three Rangers players. What goes around the back

and look at Watson. He just lets go. People watchers. Terrible defending.

Three against three, mark your man and get close. They never do. None

of them are close. They conceded three corners today. This next one

was the worst. They are set up with man marking but, incredibly, they

are marking different Rangers players. Usually you get one guy and

you stay with them. There is one man lost. Watson never gets anywhere

near it. He is on his back foot. It is a very good header, but for

Hamilton, they will be pulling their hair out. As disappointed as

Hamilton worked with the refereeing decisions, he said he was equally

disappointed with the defending. decisions, he said he was equally

That was terrible. A big match for Rangers against Celtic.

And? It gives them confidence boost but I don't think it makes much

difference. One match in the Ladbrokes Premiership, Motherwell

returning to winning ways against Kilmarnock, who got ahead through

Kris Boyd. An equaliser from McCue, and Jules with the winner. Mother

will live up to tenth in the Premiership, and there we have it.

The bottom of the table getting quite interesting. We spoke about

Hamilton Academical against Rangers. Obviously the beat Aberdeen midweek.

You have said for a few weeks now they will go down, Steven, talking

about Motherwell. How much pressure is Martin Canning under? -- talking

about Hamilton Academical. I have spoken time and time again about

their away form which has been a problem for them this season. And

next season. Hearts away then back to Ibrox. I think he is the one

manager safe out of them. They do not seem like a club who will be

trigger-happy to get rid of the manager quickly. What do you make

about the goings-on at Motherwell this week? You didn't think Martin

McHugh would get -- Mark McGhee would get sacked. What did you think

about the news? I thought they would wait until the end of the season but

equally I wasn't surprised because of the goings-on in the last couple

of weeks and the results. It is an attractive club for somebody to go

into because they have great potential and are sitting low down

in the week. Two games in the William Hill Scottish Cup tomorrow.

Considering their league form has been so poor. Better of late. My

heart is saying they can do it but my head is disagreeing, quite

strongly. LAUGHTER

They have won their last four games and will go with confidence and

momentum but it will not be enough because Celtic's quality I think

will seal the game. They are unstoppable this season. He has been

the Celtic Park and kept Celtic Abbey for a long period of the game,

with Alois. You will probably have our plan in his main -- kept Celtic

with Alois. You will probably have at bay. But it will be an uphill

task because nobody has been able to do before. Partick Thistle are in a

good run of form. But Aberdeen favourites. Yes, no doubt Aberdeen

are favoured by Partick Thistle are going up with a great deal of

confidence because they have had a wonderful run of form of late and it

should make for and entertaining game. What is your prediction? I

think it could be very tight. I would not be surprised if Aberdeen

just nick it by the odd goal. Stephen makes a lot of predictions

but is not good at it! I think Aberdeen, especially at Pittodrie,
