speed skating. Join us in a moment. The Winter Olympics: Day 14.

:00:14.:01:08.

CLARE BADLING: Hello and welcome. I hope you took your broom to work

:01:09.:02:15.

with you today and you rocked the house. The good news is that it is a

:02:16.:02:20.

transferable skill so it will last children a lifetime with the

:02:21.:02:24.

courses, dogs, cats and the other people with brooms, I'm not so sure.

:02:25.:02:30.

Today was going to to be good for Great Britain because the male

:02:31.:02:33.

curlers were in a gold medal match against Canada. We have got that

:02:34.:02:37.

coming up shortly as well as everything that happened in the

:02:38.:02:40.

short track speed skating wet Elise Christie went in Britain -- where

:02:41.:02:45.

Elise Christie. We have got a lot but we stuck with the action in the

:02:46.:02:48.

Ice Cube and Matthew Pinsent got the call-up. There is a perception about

:02:49.:02:55.

curling that it is a gentle, genteel sport but somehow it stand out from

:02:56.:02:59.

the rest of the other big events but make no mistake, on the ice, this is

:03:00.:03:03.

going to be a battle. In David Murdoch, we have a leader

:03:04.:03:19.

who has been defeated before, both in Turin and Vancouver ending badly.

:03:20.:03:22.

But he believes that this is his time. He also knows that these

:03:23.:03:28.

chances do not come along very often. To finally be here after

:03:29.:03:31.

putting in so much work with these guys, it is the ultimate dream come

:03:32.:03:36.

true. We will do everything we can, fight to the absolute last and I

:03:37.:03:41.

will play that shots to win. Do you go through the same torture that

:03:42.:03:44.

everybody else does watching this board? The macro I have been

:03:45.:03:49.

watching this for 20 years with the family and I tend to be the quieter

:03:50.:03:55.

one. Maybe get anxious towards the end. He is an amazing skip and

:03:56.:04:01.

leader. Yes, he leads the others on and drives them to play the shots

:04:02.:04:06.

that they do. But ultimately, that is curling, it comes down to him.

:04:07.:04:11.

Yes, that's right. That is when I get a flatter! The first end was

:04:12.:04:20.

dramatic, Murdoch needed to limit the damage in the fourth.

:04:21.:04:24.

COMMENTATOR: This needs to ball right for him, he need some luck.

:04:25.:04:31.

The sweepers are just watching it and they will guide it in. A nice

:04:32.:04:48.

draw from the Canadian skip. They have the early lead. At the end of

:04:49.:04:56.

the macro one, they are two behind and then Murdoch went straight into

:04:57.:05:03.

the Hubble -- at the end of end one. Britain got one back in the second.

:05:04.:05:10.

It will be close, it is one but not the two that he wanted. The mistakes

:05:11.:05:17.

were creeping in. Got to catch the guard... Oh, dear. They need to work

:05:18.:05:26.

that hard to get past the stone. We have been hanging on and asking

:05:27.:05:31.

David Murdoch to make the big shots and he said he couldn't keep doing

:05:32.:05:34.

that and even up to three ends, he has been trying to rescue his team.

:05:35.:05:41.

They could not be getting any worse. This has got to be right. He

:05:42.:05:47.

has got to get the two here. He is just looking to get an edge on this.

:05:48.:05:54.

It needs to move... Has got anything now it is starting to turn?

:05:55.:06:02.

Has he even got one? Move your head, we can't see!

:06:03.:06:16.

That was close but yet another little notch ratcheted up. Canada's

:06:17.:06:27.

grip on this match. With one end to go before the break, getting back on

:06:28.:06:31.

the board was crucial. They have done well and this should

:06:32.:06:34.

be good enough for one, I hope and I think it is. Pretty close to a

:06:35.:06:41.

terrible start? It is not the start we wanted against a team of this

:06:42.:06:47.

calibre. We wanted to keep the score close. Is it all over? , no, not

:06:48.:06:55.

until it is over, not until the final stone. If we can get the two

:06:56.:06:59.

back and then put the pressure on to get the scoreline tighter and put

:07:00.:07:03.

pressure on Canada, we need to step up a gear and play some more shots.

:07:04.:07:08.

Great Britain were really up against it.

:07:09.:07:11.

A big gap now. This is a huge mountain to climb. Not a lot of

:07:12.:07:26.

chance if anything. Eight - two after six ends. Murdoch's men needed

:07:27.:07:31.

the hammer and needed to score two to get any chance of getting into

:07:32.:07:38.

the game -- the men have got the hammer. , no. That is sad. It has

:07:39.:07:46.

been the story of this Olympic final.

:07:47.:07:53.

So eight - three down and Murdoch had very few options. It has been a

:07:54.:08:00.

great campaign during these Olympic Games and while they have fought

:08:01.:08:05.

hard in this final two resurrect something to get something going, it

:08:06.:08:11.

has been an uphill struggle. So Brad Jacobs sending down what could be

:08:12.:08:14.

the last stone here. Interesting to see what David Murdoch does if this

:08:15.:08:20.

happens. He just needs to sit here and he does. Canada lead 9-3 and

:08:21.:08:28.

there is a discussion going on with the British team. And that his aid.

:08:29.:08:35.

This is a game over. Enough is enough, Brad Jacobs and his team are

:08:36.:08:43.

the gold medallists with Dave Murdoch and his team, they will

:08:44.:08:45.

reflect surely in the coming hours on a silver medal which was

:08:46.:08:48.

thoroughly deserved. CLARE BADLING: Some, concession in

:08:49.:08:57.

the end, it was too much, the Canadians to strong but please

:08:58.:09:00.

welcome our silver medal winning meant's curling team!

:09:01.:09:06.

We have the skip, David Murdoch, Greg Drummond, Scott Andrews,

:09:07.:09:12.

Michael Goodfellow and the alternate Tom Brewster. Many congratulations

:09:13.:09:15.

and David, I said to you did you want to listen to that and you said

:09:16.:09:21.

"no, not really!". Not in any stage did it look like it would fall right

:09:22.:09:26.

for you. No, we wanted to get to a good start and we did not get the

:09:27.:09:35.

confidence. How proud are you the youngster sitting alongside you?

:09:36.:09:39.

Real proud. It has been an incredible few years with the team.

:09:40.:09:43.

Really proud the effort. There has been... They have been great days,

:09:44.:09:49.

tough days and today was one of the slightly tougher days and yesterday

:09:50.:09:51.

and the day before was one of the good days and that is curling, it is

:09:52.:09:56.

a roller-coaster. I am really proud of every one of the guys. It has

:09:57.:10:00.

been an incredible achievement and an incredible fortnight. Greg, for

:10:01.:10:05.

you, the first Olympics for the three of you. David has been around

:10:06.:10:08.

a while, how much did you want to try to win a medal not just for

:10:09.:10:16.

yourself but for him as well? We came in believing we could win a

:10:17.:10:20.

medal and David having been at a few Olympics, we try to take as much

:10:21.:10:23.

experience from him as we could in order to help us achieve that dream

:10:24.:10:27.

of winning an Olympic medal. When we won the semifinal, the aftermath was

:10:28.:10:33.

phenomenal. Today was an opportunity of a lifetime to win a gold medal

:10:34.:10:37.

and unfortunately it did not quite happen but we are still proud of our

:10:38.:10:42.

efforts. Scott, maybe that is the effort to concentrate on, the wins

:10:43.:10:46.

against Sweden and Norway, they were massive. On Friday, we were 5-1

:10:47.:10:51.

against Denmark and we fought back and got the victory. Unfortunately

:10:52.:10:55.

we knew against Norway if we won, it was then us through and that did not

:10:56.:11:01.

quite go to plan and then the Canada game did not go to plan, neither did

:11:02.:11:04.

the China game but we've got to a tie-break in that and we came

:11:05.:11:09.

through that and got to the semifinal and got to the final today

:11:10.:11:13.

and that was unbelievable. Michael, can I ask you a question about how

:11:14.:11:17.

tough the Canadians are? They are confident to eight degree -- to a

:11:18.:11:24.

degree. They are known for getting themselves pumped up. That is the

:11:25.:11:28.

way they are and we tried not to get distracted by that. It works for

:11:29.:11:35.

them and nothing wrong with it. Tom, for you, watching from a unique

:11:36.:11:40.

perspective, what have you learned from this Olympic experience? It is

:11:41.:11:47.

much easier being on the eyes than it is being of it, -- being off it.

:11:48.:11:54.

A fantastic experience though and I will take a lot, the Games and

:11:55.:11:59.

hopefully for me, though the drive on and try to get to the next Games

:12:00.:12:04.

and we are really proud of the guys, they have played great. I do not

:12:05.:12:10.

want to linger on what went wrong in the final but it happened and I will

:12:11.:12:14.

only show you one piece to comment on, David. It happened early on and

:12:15.:12:19.

the writing was on the wall from end three. Do could go to the start of

:12:20.:12:27.

the first end, and we were not quite clinical enough. They forced a lot

:12:28.:12:33.

of pressure on us and we did not respond and we were not quite

:12:34.:12:36.

clinical enough. Unfortunately not our best game, not the best game we

:12:37.:12:41.

were capable of and that is what is hard to take just now, that we did

:12:42.:12:44.

not play as well as we could have. In some of the shots you see, it is

:12:45.:12:50.

quite heartbreaking at times, just throwing them well but not getting

:12:51.:12:55.

the shots. And at times, you have to take that. And so hard when you are

:12:56.:12:58.

then trailing by a long way as you were at the end of end four. Your

:12:59.:13:04.

expression was, "what will I do here? " The decision to concede when

:13:05.:13:11.

you did, that seems to be a group decision. Yes, you have to face

:13:12.:13:18.

reality of the scoreline. You will not get back in the game no matter

:13:19.:13:22.

how much you think you might. The game has gone and you are too far

:13:23.:13:28.

behind and these Games will not miss anything so in some ways you are

:13:29.:13:31.

making it more painful so it was just a decision, that was it. Our

:13:32.:13:38.

dream was gone. The dream was made because you won a silver medal and

:13:39.:13:42.

let's reflect you and show you best bits at this year's Winter Olympics.

:13:43.:13:53.

COMMENTATOR: The stone is a way, is it right? He has done it! He has

:13:54.:14:09.

done it! The fist bump in the air, a brilliant shot from David Murdoch!

:14:10.:14:14.

Again, with a chance for glory... Dave Murdoch may well have done

:14:15.:14:19.

it... He has, Great Britain are in the Olympic final and the British

:14:20.:14:22.

crowd jumping up and down in the stands!

:14:23.:14:28.

Everybody here laughing as you saw your friends and girlfriends,

:14:29.:14:37.

supporters, parents, everybody up there. Ollie is here, I don't know

:14:38.:14:43.

if you are aware, Jackie Lockhart's idea, a bring your broom to work day

:14:44.:14:49.

in honour of you being in the final. People have been bringing them to

:14:50.:14:53.

work. A wide cross-section of society got involved with this.

:14:54.:14:55.

Let's start with the army. Sweeping their way in front of a

:14:56.:15:03.

tank as their demonstration of curling which is a reasonably

:15:04.:15:10.

difficult thing to steer! That is pretty tricky, I would say! Let's go

:15:11.:15:23.

to the florists. We can now go into the office. So many photographs from

:15:24.:15:32.

offices. We have had hundreds of images from up and down the country.

:15:33.:15:39.

Now we have a car park. You can see these people all have their brooms

:15:40.:15:46.

out. Finally we have the staff of the Duke of York. Maybe? Around the

:15:47.:15:56.

use of paper there to set up their ring but everybody is getting

:15:57.:15:59.

involved up and down the country, you have inspired people to, in

:16:00.:16:05.

their own way, try your sport. So many of them are also saying how

:16:06.:16:08.

proud they are of you all and that is lovely to take away as well. You

:16:09.:16:13.

can see many more of those on our website as well. I have one last

:16:14.:16:17.

question for David. Is this it for you? I am going to have a long, hard

:16:18.:16:23.

thing. It has been great to be part of such a good team and it would be

:16:24.:16:27.

ashamed to split it up and I do not know. I need to have a think and a

:16:28.:16:32.

holiday and I have not my body move. I will be seeing my wife soon.

:16:33.:16:40.

-- I have not had my honeymoon. When did you get married? A couple of

:16:41.:16:44.

years ago. A couple of years and you have not had your honeymoon! Thank

:16:45.:16:55.

you so much. Congratulations again. Later in the programme we will find

:16:56.:17:00.

out if the short track speed skaters could add to the medal haul because

:17:01.:17:51.

Short track speed skating is always the Blade runners were in action.

:17:52.:17:51.

Short track speed skating is always dramatic, do

:17:52.:17:58.

Short track speed skating is always head to the mountains for a

:17:59.:18:06.

Short track speed skating is always turn through the slalom in

:18:07.:18:16.

Short track speed skating is always former Olympic skier, Anna

:18:17.:18:27.

Short track speed skating is always 18-year-old girl bracing in the

:18:28.:18:35.

slalom, Olympic Games. Three years ago when

:18:36.:18:57.

the Moroccan federation called my dad and said they were interested in

:18:58.:19:00.

starting a ski team and there was a possibility I could get the Olympic

:19:01.:19:05.

Games and here I am now. I am here with my coach and my team-mate.

:19:06.:19:11.

Nobody else? No physios or anything? No, just my coach. Does he do

:19:12.:19:19.

everything? Yes,. What does it mean to you to be her? It means a lot. It

:19:20.:19:26.

is a big responsibility to represent Morocco and Africa and I want to

:19:27.:19:31.

represent the important values of hard work and perseverance through

:19:32.:19:35.

my sport and also the Olympic ideals. What was your best event to

:19:36.:19:43.

date? It was a slalom in Austria where I got my best points yet. Have

:19:44.:19:49.

you got a goal for today? Just to ski my best. That is a great goal.

:19:50.:19:57.

Good luck. Into Ramone Maria her fourth Riche

:19:58.:20:04.

was the first to set down a marker. She is a good position to finish our

:20:05.:20:13.

Olympics with another medal. Tina Maze is full of confidence after her

:20:14.:20:18.

two goals. She goes into the second leg with every chance of adding to

:20:19.:20:27.

the tally. Performance of the afternoon was undoubtedly that of

:20:28.:20:30.

Mikaela Shiffrin who showed a lot of skill to finish in front, clearly

:20:31.:20:36.

undaunted by the spotlight. If she wins she will be the youngest

:20:37.:20:43.

Olympic female slalom champion in history. At the other end of the

:20:44.:20:49.

scale the Austrian marry Shields is hoping to become the oldest slalom

:20:50.:20:53.

win in history. She and her sister are standing strong. -- Marlies

:20:54.:21:09.

Schild. The snow was really hard so that was good but I did not ski too

:21:10.:21:15.

well. What were the problems? I was stressed out at the start and I

:21:16.:21:20.

needed to put more energy into it and be more confident. Going into

:21:21.:21:27.

the second run we can see if Michaela Schiffer in can hold her

:21:28.:21:28.

nerve and Skeeter glory. She has an advantage of just 500 of

:21:29.:21:43.

the second. She has high arm carriage and everything is going

:21:44.:21:49.

well so far. It is a better start from this young lady. She made no

:21:50.:21:57.

mistakes at the top. She is a textbook technical slalom skier. She

:21:58.:22:00.

has a calm upper body and her skis are moving quickly underneath her

:22:01.:22:11.

like a pendulum. Bernadette and Marlies Schild are still to come but

:22:12.:22:15.

this is the lead for the Austrians here. It has been a beautiful

:22:16.:22:21.

demonstration of the slalom skiing. She has cruised through this course

:22:22.:22:27.

and she leads by more than half a second. It was brilliant. Next up,

:22:28.:22:37.

Marlies Schild. She is attacking right from the get go. She is on her

:22:38.:22:47.

way. She is probably coming to the end of her career so it would be

:22:48.:22:52.

great to see her on the Pope -- podium. Skiing is not quite flawless

:22:53.:22:56.

but in between the mistakes she lets them run. She was the bronze

:22:57.:23:07.

medallist in 2006 and silver medallist in 2010 and can she

:23:08.:23:13.

finally get a gold in 2014? It is a good ski so far. She likes to build

:23:14.:23:18.

it up and then start to really attack on these final steep turns.

:23:19.:23:23.

Beautiful skiing from Marlies Schild. She is really having a go

:23:24.:23:28.

and letting them run and she's skis into gold for Austria. It is the

:23:29.:23:38.

turn of Tina Maze. She is looking for the double, the technical double

:23:39.:23:43.

to add to her downhill gold. She shared that and she was the outright

:23:44.:23:50.

winner of the giant slalom. She is a little way behind and it has not

:23:51.:23:56.

gone to plan so far. The target is missed. No medals tonight for Tina

:23:57.:24:04.

Maze. Marlies Schild is guaranteed an Olympic medal. Maria Hoefl-Riesch

:24:05.:24:25.

has already claimed the gold in the super combined and the super-G and

:24:26.:24:30.

can she add to her tally tonight? No, it is third. At least a silver

:24:31.:24:38.

for Marlies Schild and with one to come Kathrin Zettel is guaranteed a

:24:39.:24:48.

medal. Mikaela Shiffrin has a huge advantage. It is a solid start but

:24:49.:24:54.

not mistake free. It is pretty solid. Let us see if her nerves can

:24:55.:25:00.

hold out here. Yes, very smooth so far. So relaxed as if she was skiing

:25:01.:25:07.

a normal race. It is sensational skiing, this woman is absolutely on

:25:08.:25:14.

fire. No pressure so far. She is in trouble. What a recovery!

:25:15.:25:18.

Unbelievable reflexes there. But how much damage has done to her time? It

:25:19.:25:25.

is still good. She is in front. Mikaela Shiffrin comes onto the

:25:26.:25:29.

final third of the Olympic slalom course and will she be the youngest

:25:30.:25:34.

ever winner of the Olympic slalom or we'll Marlies Schild be the oldest?

:25:35.:25:40.

It is the youngest! Mikaela Shiffrin wins the title at 18 years old. She

:25:41.:25:47.

is the Olympic slalom champion. She takes the gold medal. Marlies Schild

:25:48.:25:51.

take the silver for the second games in a row and Kathrin Zettel takes

:25:52.:25:57.

the bronze. You are already world champion and now Olympic champion,

:25:58.:26:01.

ie prepared for the adulation you will get that time? To be honest,

:26:02.:26:05.

probably not. I guess now I will go to New York for a day or two and

:26:06.:26:10.

then I have some more races in the World Cup season so hopefully that

:26:11.:26:13.

little break in between actually really going home and it will not be

:26:14.:26:29.

quite so much. Kenza Tazi now. She is born in Boston and she is from

:26:30.:26:36.

Morocco. Two races and one will go back to her normal life and for the

:26:37.:26:45.

other one super stardom beckons. Mikaela Shiffrin makes amends a bit

:26:46.:26:49.

therefore the USA missing Lindsey Vonn. It means that the USA have won

:26:50.:26:55.

their second Alpine Gold and it puts them just bit behind Austria in the

:26:56.:27:00.

Alpine skiing medals. The Austrians have the highest total number of

:27:01.:27:04.

medals, including a bronze and a silver today. The final Alpine medal

:27:05.:27:09.

will be decided tomorrow in the slalom for the men. Tomorrow starts

:27:10.:27:15.

with snowboarding and then the parallel slalom finals. Before then

:27:16.:27:19.

though, tonight we have the joy of the six Nations.

:27:20.:27:53.

Wales against France tonight. Once we finished you can turn over and

:27:54.:27:59.

watch that. Tomorrow it is Italy versus Scotland. We are heading back

:28:00.:28:05.

up the mountain because you may have watched the men's ski cross

:28:06.:28:09.

yesterday because it was extraordinary and it was three

:28:10.:28:15.

places for the French and now it is a chance for the women.

:28:16.:28:26.

At first I was afraid, I was petrified, kept wondering how I

:28:27.:28:32.

could ever live without you by my side. I spent so many nights

:28:33.:28:36.

thinking about how you did me wrong that I got strong and Island how to

:28:37.:28:44.

get along. Great words there from Olivia -- Gloria Gaynor's I Will

:28:45.:28:49.

survive, that is what the women have to do today, they have two survive.

:28:50.:28:54.

It all starts here. 28 ladies each take it in turns to put down their

:28:55.:29:00.

fastest time run. A good charge out of the start. Too

:29:01.:29:05.

low! This is the dignity stripper. Going really nicely. She is down.

:29:06.:29:18.

Oh, no! Despite all the thrills and spills, the entire field or made it

:29:19.:29:24.

through to the finals in one piece. The Australian is under threat from

:29:25.:29:27.

the big German. She has been pushed off the course and she has crashed

:29:28.:29:31.

out. She has made her move into first.

:29:32.:29:38.

Beautiful skiing. They come through! Brilliant racing

:29:39.:29:43.

here. I am having a good time!

:29:44.:29:46.

Masterclass there. That was a big crash. A challenging

:29:47.:29:57.

course in difficult conditions lead to further big crashes and this one

:29:58.:30:03.

resulted in an blue acrylic injury for the German athlete who had to be

:30:04.:30:08.

taken off the course in a stretcher. Oh, no, a massive crush! Dived for

:30:09.:30:16.

the inside and they make a move. Neck and neck. Having led all the

:30:17.:30:19.

way, she goes down on the run into the last jump.

:30:20.:30:22.

Lots of big crashes in the semifinals, and the finals shaping

:30:23.:30:27.

up very nicely. I great stuff from Smith. She is

:30:28.:30:47.

pushing Holmlund across. Smith knows that Holmlund is behind her. Into

:30:48.:30:51.

the technical roller section. Smith has gone. No, she is still in this.

:30:52.:30:58.

They are neck and neck into battle for second as they come down. They

:30:59.:31:06.

are screaming. Sandra has got it. You can hear Smith screaming in

:31:07.:31:10.

frustration. She blew it. Smith blew that race. Look at that, absolutely

:31:11.:31:13.

distraught. A good start from David. Working the

:31:14.:31:27.

first role and she is in the lead. Thompson is right there. Katya Crema

:31:28.:31:36.

is also experienced. The younger ones are at the back. And look at

:31:37.:31:47.

Naslund. She has taken herself out. The 37-year-old Frenchwoman of David

:31:48.:31:55.

showing her experience there. The 17-year-old Swede snapping at their

:31:56.:32:03.

heels into that third berm. A little patch of fog. She stayed on her

:32:04.:32:04.

feet. Two Canadians in the final along

:32:05.:32:20.

with a Swedish and a French woman. All eyes to the final. And now it is

:32:21.:32:27.

time. All of this comes down to one race. If Ophelie David can get away,

:32:28.:32:33.

the Canadians will have to hunt her down. Another good line on the

:32:34.:32:39.

inside lane. Superb over the rollers, David. The two Canadians

:32:40.:32:46.

are looking good and our out in front.

:32:47.:32:53.

At the moment it is Marielle Thompson in the lead. Kelsey Serwa

:32:54.:33:00.

just behind as they tuck in. At the moment, there is not any time...

:33:01.:33:12.

Here comes Serwa. And Ophelie David looking good but she has caught a

:33:13.:33:17.

knuckle which will slow her down. Does not look like she has slowed

:33:18.:33:20.

down much though. David will make a move. You can be sure of that.

:33:21.:33:24.

Ophelie David will not let this final go past and ski down into

:33:25.:33:28.

bronze medal position but she has gone. Ophelie David, the Queen of

:33:29.:33:35.

ski cross is out and now the Canadians have a clear run into the

:33:36.:33:40.

finish. Will they sabotage their own homes by battling for silver and

:33:41.:33:43.

gold? They will, you can guarantee it. The three macro will not let her

:33:44.:33:49.

team mate walk away with a gold medal. -- Serwa will not let her

:33:50.:33:53.

walk away. Silver goes to Serwa and Holmlund of

:33:54.:34:05.

Sweden glides in for the bronze. Not quite the one, two and three for the

:34:06.:34:08.

French team we saw yesterday but one and two, that's not bad.

:34:09.:34:13.

Marielle Thompson might have taken goal here but I will tell you the

:34:14.:34:18.

real winner is here - ski cross. Just amazing.

:34:19.:34:21.

CLARE BADLING: 70 people watching will have been in thrall and also

:34:22.:34:28.

properly wanted to take it up. We are waiting to hear every action

:34:29.:34:34.

from Chemmy Alcott, but let's switch focus to short track speed skating

:34:35.:34:37.

and never in her wildest nightmares would Elise Christie imagine that

:34:38.:34:41.

her micro-games would unfold as it has done. It is on a vacation in the

:34:42.:34:45.

final of the 500 metres denied her a silver medal and then she was given

:34:46.:34:49.

a did not finish when she won her heat of the 1500 metres, both she

:34:50.:34:55.

and Jon Eley were in action today. And they safely made it through to

:34:56.:34:58.

the quarterfinals, safely being the operative word in this sport.

:34:59.:35:10.

, De two we are in for a great night of skating in the Iceberg Skating

:35:11.:35:21.

Palace. Jon Eley, the flag bearer for Team GB in the opening ceremony.

:35:22.:35:29.

He holds his own , does Jon Eley, tucked in on the pace of May 15 off.

:35:30.:35:42.

We are into the final lap. Up to the line, oh, yes! Victor An takes it

:35:43.:35:50.

and tremendous skating by Jon Eley, the 29 at skipper of the team seeing

:35:51.:35:53.

him through. That was tremendously impressive. We are now moving to the

:35:54.:36:00.

ladies' semifinals. Christy racing from position number one. And Elise

:36:01.:36:05.

Christie... She nearly got knocked over there, she collided immediately

:36:06.:36:10.

then with the Canadian and I am really pleased that she stayed

:36:11.:36:14.

upright. But that was dangerous and now she is in the fourth position.

:36:15.:36:18.

At the moment, she does not seem to have the acceleration but having

:36:19.:36:23.

said that, with one lap to go, it is tight. She is on the outside and

:36:24.:36:28.

still with a lots of work to do, Elise Christie riding into second

:36:29.:36:33.

place and sweeping into the boards and into the finning straight, Elise

:36:34.:36:34.

Christie takes it for Great Britain. So two from two as they both

:36:35.:36:44.

progressed to the semifinals, could Jon Eley make the medal race?

:36:45.:36:48.

COMMENTATOR: Such an experienced competitor, he is focused. Jon Eley,

:36:49.:36:55.

the oldest man in the competition here. You can see how important it

:36:56.:37:01.

is to get the initial spread out of the way. And Liang Wenhao for China

:37:02.:37:11.

in the lead. Come on, Jon Eley, you need a recipe to get past, but Liang

:37:12.:37:18.

Wenhao still pushing at the front but he goes down the inside, what a

:37:19.:37:23.

skater he is and Jon Eley at the moment is back in fourth spot.

:37:24.:37:28.

Victor An who has already got one gold medal and bronze from Sochi

:37:29.:37:32.

will get his way into the final and yes he does, second spot Liang

:37:33.:37:37.

Wenhao, and Jon Eley having to settle for fourth.

:37:38.:37:40.

CLARE BADLING: Disappointment for Jon Eley so now all British eyes

:37:41.:37:44.

were on Elise Christie after two crushing disappointments, would

:37:45.:37:47.

fortune smile on her now? COMMENTATOR: And there is Elise

:37:48.:37:54.

Christie, no legacy but she has dismissed that in her mind, Fan

:37:55.:38:00.

Kexin and the Chinese providing the bookends and the filling is provided

:38:01.:38:06.

by Elise Christie and since at any -- and Shim Suk Hee. The macro Elise

:38:07.:38:14.

comfortable and at the back. Can she said in that position when

:38:15.:38:26.

you are amongst this kind of crowd? There are still six laps to go. She

:38:27.:38:31.

could be waiting for the acceleration, the explosion coming

:38:32.:38:35.

around the outside. She is leaving it very, very late indeed with five

:38:36.:38:37.

laps to go. Come on, Braveheart, is Shim Suk Hee leading the charge of

:38:38.:38:50.

the Chinese. And when will Elise Christie make her move? The

:38:51.:38:55.

Livingston Express. You need to make a move now. Come on, Elise. The laps

:38:56.:39:02.

are going by, only two to go. She is slightly distant, or issue gathering

:39:03.:39:06.

herself for a run, here comes Elise Christie with the long run down the

:39:07.:39:10.

outside, she has ignited the burners and she is up to third. She has gone

:39:11.:39:17.

down the inside, brilliant piece of skating but the Chinese skater has

:39:18.:39:20.

challenged her again on the inside. And she falls and takes Elise

:39:21.:39:23.

Christie out on the line. First place goes to Shim Suk Hee and in

:39:24.:39:29.

second place, Fan Kexin but I think Elise Christie will be advanced, I

:39:30.:39:36.

would like to see that again. She was certainly in a qualifying

:39:37.:39:38.

position and again, turmoil for Elise Christie. To me, I think that

:39:39.:39:45.

is a clear-cut case of being advanced and I will very surprised

:39:46.:39:49.

if Elise does not get advanced will stop she has been the victim of

:39:50.:39:57.

calls that have cost her here. Oh, no! I cannot believe it, Li Jianrou

:39:58.:40:04.

has been penalised and so has Elise Christie and she will not advanced.

:40:05.:40:08.

It is becoming a habit now, I am talking to you with yet more

:40:09.:40:14.

disappointed and heartbreak. What was your view? It looked like you

:40:15.:40:18.

were taken out. It felt like I was pushed from behind and I was knocked

:40:19.:40:22.

off my feet. I don't understand how you can penalised two people but it

:40:23.:40:27.

is done and I have to accept that and that is the problem we have with

:40:28.:40:32.

short track, every referee will track the macro judge ace immersion

:40:33.:40:39.

-- every referee will judge it differently. I don't want to be

:40:40.:40:43.

known as crying on camera. You are doing a very good job, trust me. I

:40:44.:40:47.

really wanted to bounce back and today I was feeling so pumped. This

:40:48.:40:56.

last chance, the Olympics, I wanted to do it for everybody including

:40:57.:41:00.

myself. I was hammering the overtaking procedures, I have never

:41:01.:41:03.

done like that in my life and you have it taken off, the chance taken

:41:04.:41:10.

away... Whether I got a medal or not, it is devastating for the

:41:11.:41:13.

everybody in that final, I have beaten them. I will come back in

:41:14.:41:18.

four years and I will definitely work hard.

:41:19.:41:20.

CLARE BADLING: Elise Christie can do terms with another heartbreak and in

:41:21.:41:23.

the arena, the medals were also being decided.

:41:24.:41:27.

COMMENTATOR: We are away and the Russian got left, Victor An got left

:41:28.:41:35.

behind, he will be really stretched now but he connects with the tale of

:41:36.:41:39.

the line in front and they have a lot of work to do. China in

:41:40.:41:44.

second... Sorry, leading. Wu Dajing of China. And then it is Charle

:41:45.:41:53.

Cournoyer of Canada. Running at a distance but one of the Chinese

:41:54.:42:00.

skaters has gone. Surely Victor An cannot do it, he has gone down the

:42:01.:42:05.

inside, he is astonishing. He attacks the final bend and here he

:42:06.:42:09.

comes, Victor An takes it from Russia. Look at the face! What a

:42:10.:42:17.

skater! This is the ladies' 1000 metres final. And we are away. And

:42:18.:42:23.

already at the front, it is Park Seung-Hi. Jessica Smith moves

:42:24.:42:32.

through again, Dr Bull leading position -- comfortable leading

:42:33.:42:33.

position. Coming around the outside, Shim Suk

:42:34.:42:47.

Hee of Korea. They will be a view for a 1-2. Smith trying to get in

:42:48.:42:56.

the mix. But still at the front and looking very good indeed are the

:42:57.:43:03.

Koreans. And it is Shim Suk Hee, the 17-year-old now being challenged by

:43:04.:43:09.

Park Seung-Hi and now that changes and it is Park Seung-Hi on the

:43:10.:43:14.

front. What is happening here, the Koreans are keeping the pace so

:43:15.:43:18.

high, it is electric. The rest cannot get involved. Jessica Smith

:43:19.:43:25.

in third and Fan Kexin at the act literally clinging to the pace. It

:43:26.:43:36.

is still a Korean 1-2. Fan Kexin is trying to come down the outside and

:43:37.:43:45.

pick up the file -- firepower. Park Seung-Hi takes it. A victory salute

:43:46.:43:49.

for the winner. CLARE BADLING: All along, people

:43:50.:43:57.

said he would love short track speed skating, it is so unpredictable and

:43:58.:44:00.

you have to take the rough with the smooth but that is fine if you get

:44:01.:44:04.

no smooth at all which is what has happened to Elise Christie,

:44:05.:44:07.

absolutely desperate in all three races, she does not register a

:44:08.:44:11.

finish and has no chance of showing her capability. Let's discuss this

:44:12.:44:14.

and also say congratulations to Jon Eley and his third Olympic Games

:44:15.:44:19.

finishing seventh, well done to you and many congratulations in terms of

:44:20.:44:22.

being the team captain and carrying the flag at the opening ceremony.

:44:23.:44:26.

Let's talk about your race this hall and how satisfied are you with the

:44:27.:44:31.

Winter Olympics 2014? Thanks. I am pretty pleased it has been a tough

:44:32.:44:35.

year, didn't go that well in the Olympic qualifiers so I had a lot of

:44:36.:44:40.

work to do but my performance today, I am really pleased, I worked really

:44:41.:44:43.

hard and it has come out today like I wanted it to. The result was not

:44:44.:44:47.

what I wanted but at the end of the day I am happy. And you are not far

:44:48.:44:55.

behind Victor An as he is one of the greatest skaters of all times.

:44:56.:45:01.

Kilogram not too bad. What is your take on what has happened to Elise

:45:02.:45:05.

at these Games? And how do the people around you in your spot pick

:45:06.:45:10.

up again? As a team, we must see how well she has skated and how we have

:45:11.:45:14.

got into such a good position. The frustrating thing was the calls and

:45:15.:45:21.

the last little bits make a big difference, she skated so well and

:45:22.:45:25.

she has to take it and think that in four years time, she will be a real

:45:26.:45:35.

force. If you do not marry handing on the bat and two will appear, if

:45:36.:45:44.

we look at this what do you think happened to? She had so much speed,

:45:45.:45:49.

she was coming around the outside and here it was three laps to go and

:45:50.:45:54.

she had not made any moves at all. She was conserving energy and trying

:45:55.:45:58.

to stay out of trouble and coming around the outside. She comes up the

:45:59.:46:06.

inside their really well and then Li Jianrou of China really challenges

:46:07.:46:10.

the position and there is where I think the incident occurred. That is

:46:11.:46:15.

where they had contact and the second time they had contact you

:46:16.:46:19.

cannot see it from this angle unfortunately. Does she get

:46:20.:46:23.

disqualified because the initial incident leads to a fall? Woodchip

:46:24.:46:28.

got away with it if there had not been a fall? Quite possibly. You can

:46:29.:46:34.

see that she changes lanes almost and that was a very unfortunate

:46:35.:46:40.

call, she comes out of the bend, this is just going into the bend and

:46:41.:46:45.

that is where Li Jianrou goes down from China and takes Elise Christie

:46:46.:46:49.

with her which was ultimately the reason why. You see it again here.

:46:50.:46:53.

Initially the first initial contact when she was going down the

:46:54.:46:59.

straight, they elbow or knock shoulders. Had they held their

:47:00.:47:04.

balance they would have been fine but it is because it runs on. It is

:47:05.:47:10.

like a domino effect. In your considered experience and you have

:47:11.:47:14.

competed and had bad luck and good luck and you have watched an awful

:47:15.:47:19.

lot of short track speed skating, has Elise Christie been desperately

:47:20.:47:23.

unlucky at these games? I have been watching speed skating for 25 years

:47:24.:47:29.

and I have to say that she has been the most unlucky athlete speed

:47:30.:47:33.

skater that I have ever met in those 25 years. It is an incredibly crazy

:47:34.:47:40.

sport if you look at it in the last few days. We hope that at the age of

:47:41.:47:45.

just 23 there was time for her to come back and prove herself in

:47:46.:47:49.

Olympic cycles and World Championships as well. Ollie has

:47:50.:47:53.

been analysing the huge outpouring of opinion on the Internet. A lot of

:47:54.:47:58.

love for Elise Christie and a lot of confusion. At home it must've been

:47:59.:48:04.

very hard for to understand. This person tweeted that of everyone was

:48:05.:48:08.

penalised for the amount of contact she supposedly made them no one

:48:09.:48:12.

would finish. Another person complain that nobody was explaining

:48:13.:48:18.

what decisions the officials were making. Another person said it was

:48:19.:48:23.

standard behaviour in many of the sports and last night in the figure

:48:24.:48:28.

skating somebody won last night and nobody knew why. Apparently rugby

:48:29.:48:31.

league is great at it because you get to see the video referee the

:48:32.:48:36.

decisions being made and you can ask the referee on twitter as well.

:48:37.:48:41.

Another one said that maybe because it happened to us and maybe it

:48:42.:48:45.

happens more often, if the rule is to hold your line on the straight

:48:46.:48:50.

then the decision makes sense. Another tweet here is an agreement

:48:51.:48:55.

on the need for immediate explanations and it is a brutal

:48:56.:48:58.

sport but maybe the negative years because it has gone against us.

:48:59.:49:03.

Wilf, can I ask you that? You had a chance after the finals finished to

:49:04.:49:09.

find out what other nations thought. A lot of consensus from team leaders

:49:10.:49:14.

and media is that the lack of knowledge and understanding for the

:49:15.:49:18.

sport and we talked about that earlier, we needed to have what the

:49:19.:49:22.

referees are seeing and making the calls on. The general public and the

:49:23.:49:27.

TV need to see the same footage and then we can maybe all understand it

:49:28.:49:31.

rather than everybody being totally confused about what it is about.

:49:32.:49:36.

John, I am going to issue you this challenge because I assume you will

:49:37.:49:41.

keep racing for a while. Yes, could you try and fix it so we can find

:49:42.:49:45.

out why they are disqualifying people. I will try my best. As

:49:46.:49:50.

athletes we always say that you do not want to rely on the decision of

:49:51.:49:54.

the referee but you want to keep it as clean as possible and when the

:49:55.:49:58.

calls come we know from the last couple of competitions and how it

:49:59.:50:01.

has gone that you do not want to be in that situation. It is unfortunate

:50:02.:50:05.

and I really feel for her but we have to accept the decision of the

:50:06.:50:09.

referee at the end of the day and as a team we are frustrated. When you

:50:10.:50:14.

watch a skater of the quality of Victor An who can go outside and

:50:15.:50:21.

inside and he holds his balance and he never looks like falling over and

:50:22.:50:23.

that is amazing. He has incredible strength and maybe that will come in

:50:24.:50:29.

time. Thank you so much. We will now switch to biathlon. Russia have won

:50:30.:50:33.

the gold medal in this event for the last two Olympics cycles and Ukraine

:50:34.:50:37.

were trying to win their first gold of these games and athletes had

:50:38.:50:40.

decided to stay here in Sochi despite some of the other athletes

:50:41.:50:45.

going home because of the political unrest. There was a huge amount of

:50:46.:50:52.

support for them. The women's relay is under way to a huge roar from the

:50:53.:51:00.

Russians in the crowd. Ukraine clear five and Russia clear five and a big

:51:01.:51:03.

cheer coming up from the crowd. Eight rounds to clear the targets.

:51:04.:51:09.

What a tussle for gold this is turning out to be at this stage. The

:51:10.:51:13.

French have gone and the Germans have gone for now. One by one the

:51:14.:51:18.

big nations are falling by the wayside but not the Russians and not

:51:19.:51:26.

the Ukrainians. Look at the ground that has been made up. We have got

:51:27.:51:38.

Russia and Norway coming into the stadium side-by-side in third and

:51:39.:51:41.

fourth. What drama lies in store in the second part of this race? The

:51:42.:51:47.

Russians are coming. Look at how quickly they are closing down.

:51:48.:51:52.

Superb shooting and Ukraine could be on their way to the gold. This has

:51:53.:51:59.

been a quartet unbeaten by the opposition, unbeaten by politics and

:52:00.:52:05.

united by passion, it is gold for Ukraine, silver for Russia and

:52:06.:52:10.

bronze for the Norwegians in the women's relay. What an amazing

:52:11.:52:16.

evening for Ukraine! So richly deserved. A wonderful result there.

:52:17.:52:33.

A German athlete has been thrown out of the Olympics for taking a banned

:52:34.:52:38.

stimulant. That is Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle. Bobsleigh

:52:39.:52:47.

athlete has also been sent home, William Frullani. His is for a

:52:48.:52:52.

substance that he could've taken inadvertently through a nasal

:52:53.:52:57.

decongestant. There are more drugs test at this Winter Olympics than

:52:58.:53:02.

ever before. These two cases means that the Winter Olympics has had

:53:03.:53:06.

more positive tests than Vancouver which was incredibly low, only one

:53:07.:53:10.

athlete was caught there. We are going to head behind me into the

Bolshoi arena. Four years ago the final was between the USA and Canada

:53:16.:53:19.

and it went into overtime and Canada emerged with a gold medal. This time

:53:20.:53:24.

around they are up against each other in the semifinal and this is

:53:25.:53:25.

what happened. He scores on the redirect. Canada

:53:26.:53:54.

take the lead. They are the stars of this second period. Good interplay

:53:55.:53:59.

on the zone -- in the zone. It is food for thought for the Americans

:54:00.:54:09.

stop tremendous work from the Canadians in the offensive zone. It

:54:10.:54:20.

is an easy goal from there. It goes back to Big Ben there. It is

:54:21.:54:26.

perfection, right there in front and they get their opening goal.

:54:27.:54:38.

He just needs to hold this on the board. The Americans sent everybody

:54:39.:54:45.

in there but Canada are going through to the final. The defending

:54:46.:54:49.

champions will get a chance to defend that title in the gold-medal

:54:50.:54:52.

game against Sweden. Fantastic stuff there, and in the

:54:53.:55:05.

other semifinal Sweden emerged successful. They beat Finland 2-1.

:55:06.:55:12.

They are chasing their third Olympic gold. They have won all of their

:55:13.:55:17.

games so far despite losing some key players to injury so the final will

:55:18.:55:22.

be between Canada and Sweden. Canada are renowned for having strong

:55:23.:55:26.

finishes at the Winter Olympics. In Vancouver they got 14 gold medals so

:55:27.:55:30.

let us look at the table as it stands.

:55:31.:55:41.

The USA are doing all right. They have a lot of bronzes. Germany have

:55:42.:55:47.

slipped a bit and here is our British medals podium. It is getting

:55:48.:55:58.

full up. We have at least one of every colour. Tomorrow Hazel will be

:55:59.:56:05.

back bright and early and we start at 9am with snowboarding and men's

:56:06.:56:10.

slalom which is the last Alpine event to come. There will be

:56:11.:56:14.

coverage all afternoon and we will be back in the evening. It is time

:56:15.:56:19.

now, in what has become a tradition in this programme for the Winter

:56:20.:56:29.

Wonders. Last week we highlighted the Swiss hockey team's taste for

:56:30.:56:35.

slapstick. They have been at it again and they won a bronze medal,

:56:36.:56:41.

congratulations. After the moustache extravaganza last night, this maple

:56:42.:56:45.

leaf chest hair. Should have died it read! Why have we got here then?

:56:46.:56:59.

It is official, Great Britain now have their best ever haul at the

:57:00.:57:04.

Winter Olympics which is largely thanks to these guys for winning a

:57:05.:57:08.

silver in the curling and we offer them the congratulations and they

:57:09.:57:13.

add to the bronze medals and the gold for Lizzy Yarnold. For Elise

:57:14.:57:16.

Christie we will make sure she gets a great big hug because things have

:57:17.:57:20.

not gone her way at all but that is the nature of sport which gives and

:57:21.:57:24.

gives and snatches away and we all know that. You have all trained hard

:57:25.:57:29.

to get where you are today. Good luck to them and I'm sure if you

:57:30.:57:33.

took a broom to work you did good work with it. Goodbye!

:57:34.:57:41.
