Today was a big day for the red white and blue on snow and ice. We

:01:39.:01:45.

had British skaters and skiers in action all over the place. Between

:01:46.:01:49.

now and eight o'clock we will bring you bang up-to-date with everything

:01:50.:01:52.

that has happened, with the help of our trusty shopping trolley. So

:01:53.:01:58.

let's start in the Iceberg Skating Palace with short track and

:01:59.:02:01.

Britain's Elise Christie was in action in the 500 m. It is the first

:02:02.:02:06.

of the three events and it proved to be a dramatic day for her. Three

:02:07.:02:12.

Chinese skaters against Elise Christie of Great Britain in

:02:13.:02:13.

semifinal number two. Christie has rallied. And they have

:02:14.:02:24.

gone down already. One of the big favourites has gone down. Now it is

:02:25.:02:29.

Elise Christie on the front, who is looking very good indeed here.

:02:30.:02:34.

Tapping out the rhythm, and this is going to be hard for the Chinese

:02:35.:02:35.

skaters to get round. 1.5 laps to go, Elise Christie,

:02:36.:02:47.

within a lap of getting through to the final, this is history in the

:02:48.:02:53.

making. And running through to the line. She may well have finished

:02:54.:03:00.

second, actually. That is good enough to see Elise Christie into

:03:01.:03:05.

the final. There will be no charitable hand-outs here, take it

:03:06.:03:08.

from me. Fontana has been overhauled by Elise

:03:09.:03:22.

Christie. They've all gone down. There was only one skater left

:03:23.:03:29.

handing, they got back up and they are skating for the medals, and

:03:30.:03:33.

Elise Christie is in second place. She comes storming through. She's

:03:34.:03:37.

going to try and claim this silver medal. She is being chased down by

:03:38.:03:45.

Fontana a vaguely. She comes up to get the bell lap, and Fontana has

:03:46.:03:53.

almost bridged this to Christie. They are in the final lap, and the

:03:54.:04:00.

final medal -- the gold medal goes to the Chinese competitor, Elise

:04:01.:04:03.

Christie takes the silver medal, history has been made. We wait to

:04:04.:04:08.

see whether the result will stand, but that was a great skate by

:04:09.:04:15.

Christie. What is bring to happen to Elise Christie? She charged down the

:04:16.:04:22.

inside. I fear the worst. The sad news is that Elise Christie has been

:04:23.:04:25.

penalised and placed fourth in the contest. How sad is that? Arianna

:04:26.:04:34.

Fontana elevate herself up one place, and the bronze goes to South

:04:35.:04:46.

Korea. I did not want to be the one to do the attacking. Unfortunately

:04:47.:04:53.

the girl hit me off my feet and that meant that I then hit everyone else.

:04:54.:04:57.

That is the way that short track goes. The referee has made their

:04:58.:05:04.

decision. Everyone is going to have a different opinion. I am regretting

:05:05.:05:09.

that. I wanted to get the first British medal, but I went for the

:05:10.:05:16.

win, and that is the way it went. A heartbroken Elise Christie.

:05:17.:05:20.

I'm joined by Wilf O'Reilly. Since then, Lees has regained some

:05:21.:05:30.

composure. She has said thank you to everyone for your support. I'm so

:05:31.:05:33.

grateful. I totally respect the referee's decision. Sorry to the

:05:34.:05:36.

other finalists. Very professional attitude. After a disappointing

:05:37.:05:42.

race, to come back with a statement like that is fantastic. That is the

:05:43.:05:46.

way that she needs to look forward. How do you read the incident? What

:05:47.:05:54.

happened and why did it happen she drew number three on the start line.

:05:55.:05:59.

She wanted to come past Fontana. She knew that if she didn't, the skater

:06:00.:06:02.

in fourth place was going to attack from the rear. She came up the

:06:03.:06:06.

inside of Fontana. When I initially saw it, I thought that Elise

:06:07.:06:13.

Christie was at Fort, but having seen it from seven different

:06:14.:06:17.

angles, it seems that Fontana came across and made it more difficult

:06:18.:06:22.

for her to go through, so it was a 50-50 call. It looked a lot worse,

:06:23.:06:26.

because she was seen to be the offending skater, but we have to

:06:27.:06:30.

respect the decision of the referees. But we can still feel

:06:31.:06:35.

aggrieved, even if she respected. She has got two more events to come,

:06:36.:06:42.

her favourite distance among them, the 1000 metres. How do she recover

:06:43.:06:47.

from this and what does she learn from it? The British team are in

:06:48.:06:51.

great form, we have had two short track finals, with Elise Christie

:06:52.:06:57.

being in one of them pull some she had a magnificent semifinal, to draw

:06:58.:07:01.

three Chinese skaters qualify for the final was absolutely fantastic.

:07:02.:07:07.

I think that must have given her a lot of confidence to go through into

:07:08.:07:10.

the 1500 metres, and ultimately the 1000 metres on the last day. Thank

:07:11.:07:15.

you for joining us this evening. Elise Christie was the first ever

:07:16.:07:19.

British woman to make a short track speed skating final. The last of the

:07:20.:07:27.

new slopestyle events was the men's skiing, and Britain's representative

:07:28.:07:31.

was James Woods of Sheffield. He is known as Woodsy, and last year he

:07:32.:07:34.

became Britain's first freestyle skiing world Championship medallist

:07:35.:07:37.

in 20 years, with a silver in Norway. How would he fare at his

:07:38.:07:41.

first Winter Olympics? Graham Bell was there. The brand-new Olympic

:07:42.:07:51.

event, slopestyle, has gone down fantastically well at the games in

:07:52.:07:55.

Sochi. This is the last one, the men's ski slopestyle. Our big hope,

:07:56.:08:00.

James Woods from Sheffield. He had a crash in training and damaged his

:08:01.:08:05.

hip. How much would that affect him? The qualifying rounds now, only 12

:08:06.:08:07.

go through. My goodness. Double ten. Double injection. Now it

:08:08.:08:22.

is the turn of James Woods. Super technical. Beautiful run. Fantastic

:08:23.:08:33.

first round for James Woods. Very strong run from him. Ski slopestyle,

:08:34.:08:43.

round two, who we go. James Woods, currently in third place, RGB one of

:08:44.:08:52.

the best rail riders in the field. Style there, on the 1080. I thought

:08:53.:08:58.

after that first one, he looked so smooth and solid, and that has given

:08:59.:09:08.

him a big jolt. You run a great spot going into the finals, it means that

:09:09.:09:12.

you will ski third last, so what is the plan? All I can do is give it my

:09:13.:09:18.

100% best. That is what I try to do every single day. I know that there

:09:19.:09:21.

are lots of people watching so I want to do those guys proud and do

:09:22.:09:27.

my thing. Everyone was happy for him. He's struggling with his hip

:09:28.:09:33.

pain. But he is dealing with it and has put down an amazing first run.

:09:34.:09:39.

Back to the top of the free skiing slopestyle finals. The top section

:09:40.:09:47.

done and dusted. What has he got on the jumps? He tweeted yesterday that

:09:48.:09:54.

this was the best day ever, and his words. He opened up early on that.

:09:55.:10:02.

Very early. The triple. Yes. My goodness. He never looked out of

:10:03.:10:08.

control. He was not forcing that triple. You could see that as he

:10:09.:10:13.

came into the last three. He was well on top of it. 92.4. James Woods

:10:14.:10:23.

of Great Britain. Qualified in third place. Has had the luxury of letting

:10:24.:10:35.

nine of the finalists go before him. Woody is one of the more technical

:10:36.:10:39.

riders, the only one we have seen to hit that kink rail, a flat down and

:10:40.:10:45.

a 450 out. Absolutely perfect rail section. And nicely through the

:10:46.:10:56.

canning. The first of these jumps. -- cannon. Sat down slightly on the

:10:57.:11:06.

pen, but not too bad. On the right side 12. Will get that grab. He

:11:07.:11:15.

didn't even land it, the death came out to meet him.

:11:16.:11:20.

-- the earth. It looked amazing to me. The first plays qualifier, Joss

:11:21.:11:35.

Christensen. He finished that rotation beautifully with a metre or

:11:36.:11:41.

two to spare. A long way from the landing there. The stretch triple.

:11:42.:11:52.

My goodness. Where was he going? Can cross just and soon make it up? Yes

:11:53.:11:56.

he can. As Mac can Joss Christensen. 16, 20, immaculate, absolutely

:11:57.:12:12.

ridiculous. He just needs to hold back together. Switch to switch.

:12:13.:12:19.

Coming backwards for the triple 14. My goodness! That was difficult.

:12:20.:12:37.

That was absolutely insane! 93.6, going into second behind Joss

:12:38.:12:41.

Christensen. Any last-minute advice you were given at the start? Woody

:12:42.:12:48.

knows what he's doing, we will see. Can he get on the podium? He totally

:12:49.:12:54.

can, but it is any man's game right now. Let's see. He needs 92.4 or

:12:55.:13:05.

better for a place on the podium. 450, the King flat arc. Solid

:13:06.:13:17.

through this rail section. He's going to be feeling good through

:13:18.:13:22.

this one, lovely. Confidence will be brimming at this point. The rail

:13:23.:13:28.

section done, and tidily. Sat down again there, going to be difficult

:13:29.:13:33.

to improve on this score. Unless we see a triple, here. No, no. You have

:13:34.:13:46.

got to give him a round of applause. 78.4. 86.6 would be the first round

:13:47.:13:52.

score, that is good enough for fifth. Would see, you must be happy

:13:53.:13:57.

with that fifth place, with the injury going in. For sure. Happy to

:13:58.:14:05.

be here. A little disappointing when you do not perform at your best, but

:14:06.:14:11.

I have got to be honest, to be here in such an immense final, the

:14:12.:14:17.

Olympics, and Joss, he's the nicest guy on the face of the, so I could

:14:18.:14:19.

not the more happy for anyone else. We see is here with us now,

:14:20.:14:32.

reflecting on that run. Is it a case of what might have been? Yes,

:14:33.:14:45.

absolutely. -- Woodsy is here. It was not an incredible day for me,

:14:46.:14:48.

but it was an incredible day for slopestyle scheme. -- skiing. Put

:14:49.:14:59.

this into context, because you almost pulled him out of this event.

:15:00.:15:05.

Yes, I questioned whether we did the right thing allowing him to compete,

:15:06.:15:08.

but it is the Olympics, it is once every four years, he has worked so

:15:09.:15:13.

hard to be here, and he needed to ski today, no matter what. Are you

:15:14.:15:19.

glad that you had the experience? Yes, it is not everyday you get the

:15:20.:15:23.

chance to drop at the Olympics. So yes, I am happy. Having a look at

:15:24.:15:30.

some of the slow motion of your run. What could you not do that you

:15:31.:15:35.

would normally be able to do because of a hip injury? The rails were

:15:36.:15:44.

painful, I think I did get through them pretty well. The take-offs for

:15:45.:15:53.

the job is other than that was the main thing, because certain areas

:15:54.:16:05.

with the hit set it off, and I think that really got it especially, so I

:16:06.:16:10.

was definitely on the back burner, relaxing on the take-off and trying

:16:11.:16:13.

to do it in a way that wouldn't hurt, and obviously that doesn't

:16:14.:16:18.

just have an impact on the trick, it is the whole trick that is

:16:19.:16:26.

affected. But I did it. And you did the best you could do in the

:16:27.:16:30.

condition you are in. You have more competitions to come this year?

:16:31.:16:35.

Absolutely. I am going to have to take a few weeks off, I'm thinking,

:16:36.:16:38.

the doctors are saying that, unfortunately. I have been taking

:16:39.:16:45.

painkillers quite frequently today to keep me up on the slopes. But you

:16:46.:16:49.

don't get the opportunity to go to the Olympics very often. I do this

:16:50.:16:57.

all the time, so I will make the most of today. We're glad you

:16:58.:17:05.

dropped in on this show tonight, so thank you very much and

:17:06.:17:08.

congratulations on fifth place. Woodsy emphasising that the

:17:09.:17:11.

importance of fitness. You have to be in the shape of your life to do

:17:12.:17:21.

well at the Olympics. Lizzy Yarnold has only been in the sport for three

:17:22.:17:26.

years, it is her first Olympics. Matthew Pinsent went to find out how

:17:27.:17:30.

she would do. This is the Sankey sliding centre.

:17:31.:17:35.

This is the moment that Lizzy Yarnold and Shelley Rudman have

:17:36.:17:44.

waited four years for. The World Cup winner versus the world champion.

:17:45.:17:50.

Team-mate and rivals. The weight of the nation's expectations are on

:17:51.:17:51.

their shoulders. We don't know what short of -- what

:17:52.:18:09.

sort of shape Pikus-Pace is in. Lizzy Yarnold has already won a

:18:10.:18:11.

world championship, and now she's going for Olympic old. Over of a

:18:12.:18:18.

quarter of a second up on her number one rival. Unbelievable from Lizzy

:18:19.:18:25.

here. Another track record. So, Shelley Rudman, the best-known of

:18:26.:18:33.

the sliders at the moment, starts her Olympic campaign here. So far,

:18:34.:18:41.

her run is looking solid. Oh, she clipped the wall there. Here we go

:18:42.:18:56.

now with Elena nicotine. -- Nikotina. And she finishes very

:18:57.:19:03.

close to Lizzy Yarnold. So that is the first run completed.

:19:04.:19:14.

Lizzy Yarnold has gone top, just in front of Nikotina.

:19:15.:19:21.

Shelley Rudman of Great Britain is usually a good starter. And this

:19:22.:19:28.

time she has started well. Absolutely superb. And that means

:19:29.:19:33.

she stays in exactly the same place for the time being. This is the

:19:34.:19:40.

first of the athletes who will really be pressuring yarn old for

:19:41.:19:46.

the gold medal. So far, a really good run. She is accelerating down

:19:47.:19:59.

the last part of the track. And this is Nikotina. She has pulled it out

:20:00.:20:08.

at these Olympics. And she has lost it, my goodness. Pikus-Pace is in

:20:09.:20:15.

the lead with one athlete to go, Lizzy Yarnold of Great Britain. She

:20:16.:20:22.

gets down in the perfect driving position, and she goes, and is she

:20:23.:20:26.

going to break the track record? Not quite. You can see the advantage she

:20:27.:20:34.

has got over Pikus-Pace already. She had a quarter of a second, and this

:20:35.:20:42.

is a big margin to be leading the Olympics in. Over half a second, 50

:20:43.:20:49.

600s. Absolutely perfect line, she is keeping so still on the sled.

:20:50.:20:56.

They do a lot of work in wind tunnels perfecting that position. So

:20:57.:21:02.

far it is an unbelievable run. Can she keep it up?

:21:03.:21:09.

That is brilliant. As long as she doesn't take a big hit here, she

:21:10.:21:13.

will hold most of that. A little tap there, she might lose a few

:21:14.:21:16.

fractions, but no more than a 10th of a second. Coming to the line,

:21:17.:21:25.

wow. 58.46. That is just outside of the track record. 0.44 of a second

:21:26.:21:32.

ahead, and that is brilliant. How was your morning's work? It was

:21:33.:21:39.

great, thank you. I was twisting and turning in my bed, I was so excited.

:21:40.:21:45.

Now I have started the competition, I'm in the swing of it and I'm

:21:46.:21:48.

really pleased with how it is going so far. How'd you spend the time

:21:49.:21:55.

between now and tomorrow afternoon? I like the evening part, this is

:21:56.:22:00.

where races are won and lost, and I can sleep click a baby now I have

:22:01.:22:05.

started the competition. All the normal athlete things. So that is

:22:06.:22:10.

the end of the first day of competition, and at 0.44 ahead,

:22:11.:22:14.

Lizzy Yarnold does have a comfortable lead over her rivals.

:22:15.:22:19.

Two more good runs tomorrow, and she can write her own chapter into

:22:20.:22:26.

British Olympic history. And the impressive thing is not just

:22:27.:22:30.

her aerodynamic ability or all the effort she has put in, but her

:22:31.:22:34.

attitude. She is embracing this and just loving it. You can see that

:22:35.:22:39.

smile on her face. She has this aura about her. She is here at her first

:22:40.:22:46.

Olympics, and she wants to enjoy it. When I enjoyed the racing at what I

:22:47.:22:49.

was doing, that was when the results came, and you can see the same thing

:22:50.:22:58.

happening for Lizzie. -- Lizzy. She is just cracking on as if it is any

:22:59.:23:02.

other race. And she has got a massive lead, in skeleton terms. She

:23:03.:23:11.

has. You can win and lose a race in hundredths of a second, so to be 44

:23:12.:23:17.

hundredths of a second ahead, that is a big lead. But it takes one

:23:18.:23:23.

hit, once light-skinned, to ruin it, to lose all of that. You can lose

:23:24.:23:31.

that quite quickly -- one light skied. I was texting her last night

:23:32.:23:39.

towards the race, just checking. I know she is probably not on her

:23:40.:23:41.

phone all the time, but she got around to texting me back. I said,

:23:42.:23:48.

you know you are in the lead, be calm, go and rest, chill out, watch

:23:49.:23:52.

a DVD. You have a whole day tomorrow. She has to wake up and

:23:53.:23:57.

wait the whole day to compete, just stick to your routine. Do what you

:23:58.:24:04.

have always done, have a good lunch, sit back down, try to take your mind

:24:05.:24:11.

off. If she is nervous all day, she will waste so much energy. I'm not

:24:12.:24:16.

sure she will be, I get the sense she isn't that type of person.

:24:17.:24:21.

Shelley Rudman, 11th place after her second run. Here are the timings for

:24:22.:24:34.

tomorrow. Lizzy goes at 3.30, and then we switched to BBC One for the

:24:35.:24:39.

final run at 5.15. Let's take a deep breath and go curling. Britain's men

:24:40.:24:42.

and women in action. The women of Team GB entered the ice

:24:43.:24:54.

cube early this morning with the hope of climbing up the table. They

:24:55.:25:01.

pitted their wits against arguably the best curler to come out of the

:25:02.:25:15.

Asian continent. Wang displayed her skill early on, but Eve Eve Muirhead

:25:16.:25:27.

responded. By the interval, they are deadlocked at four. Ends nine, and

:25:28.:25:37.

Wang prolonged stalemate, both sides tied at seven. Eve Muirhead focused.

:25:38.:25:46.

Experience over nervous. The game now set in the balance of GB's last

:25:47.:25:48.

throw. GB have just five games left as they

:25:49.:26:03.

aim to finish in the top four to qualify for the semis.

:26:04.:26:08.

David Murdoch in Team GB's campaign continued today in the men's round

:26:09.:26:15.

robin against team USA. The bronze medallist in the 2006 Turin games,

:26:16.:26:19.

John Schuster was to lead his team to their second victory. It would be

:26:20.:26:25.

a slow uphill struggle from the get go for the US. GB took commanding-0

:26:26.:26:29.

lead. He is from the birthplace of Bob

:26:30.:26:54.

Dylan. The points they are changing, and the USA pull-back one. Murdoch

:26:55.:27:04.

forced to take a single. Penultimate end, tables turned.

:27:05.:27:10.

There would be no doubting Murdoch being in full control with the last

:27:11.:27:13.

stone. A dominant victory for Great

:27:14.:27:21.

Britain, four wins from five matches.

:27:22.:27:26.

Good stuff from both of our teams, and that is just about it. But

:27:27.:27:32.

before we leave, let's catch up with some of the other headline makers on

:27:33.:27:34.

day six. Germany completed a golden luge

:27:35.:27:52.

clean sweep with victory in the first ever team event. In the men's

:27:53.:27:58.

20 K individual biathlon, Frenchman Martin for card -- for

:27:59.:28:11.

Fourcard took gold. Evgeni Plushenko pulled out of the figure skating and

:28:12.:28:25.

announced his retirement. And that competition is led by the

:28:26.:28:31.

19-year-old Yuzuru Hanyu, the only skater to break 100 points.

:28:32.:28:37.

So after day six, Germany's clean sweep of the luge medals mean they

:28:38.:28:53.

top the pile in terms of medals. USA's 1-2-3 in the slopestyle helped

:28:54.:28:55.

their tally. Skeleton leader Lizzy Yarnold will

:28:56.:29:09.

be going for gold tomorrow, and we will switch to BBC One on 5.15 for

:29:10.:29:15.

her final run. Tonight, the red button from eight o'clock well have

:29:16.:29:19.

extended highlights of speed skating, figure skating, ice
