Hello, and welcome to Getaways.

0:00:020:00:04

-The show where we go...

-Where you want us to go.

0:00:040:00:06

We're on a mission to check out some of your most popular holiday destinations.

CAMERA CLICKS

0:00:170:00:19

You've been sharing your top travel tips,

0:00:210:00:23

-telling us where to go...

-And what to do when we get there.

0:00:230:00:26

This week, we've come to the West Coast of the USA.

0:00:310:00:34

That's right, we are in Los Angeles, California.

0:00:340:00:37

You can now fly directly to Los Angeles from Dublin.

0:00:370:00:40

Aer Lingus offers four flights a week, all-year round,

0:00:400:00:43

with the bonus of pre-clearing Customs at Dublin airport.

0:00:430:00:46

Our destination is Santa Monica - a 30-minute transfer from the airport.

0:00:480:00:54

Joe, LA, we're here.

0:00:540:00:56

-LA, baby!

-Mmm.

-Do you know, I've been here before,

0:00:560:00:59

but I kind of based myself mainly in Downtown LA.

0:00:590:01:01

I didn't get out to Santa Monica, and everybody responded and said,

0:01:010:01:04

Santa Monica is the best way to see this

0:01:040:01:06

-place and base yourself.

-It is.

0:01:060:01:08

-What are you looking forward to?

-OK, the beaches, obviously,

0:01:080:01:10

they're beautiful. Shopping, plenty of it.

0:01:100:01:13

-Oh, yeah.

-And I really want to do a studio tour as well.

0:01:130:01:15

-Absolutely, got to do that.

-Yeah?

0:01:150:01:17

Cheers.

0:01:170:01:19

Los Angeles, the City of Angels is huge,

0:01:190:01:23

sprawling over an area more than ten times the size of Belfast or Dublin.

0:01:230:01:27

Greater Los Angeles is divided up into cities.

0:01:270:01:30

Some of them you will probably have heard of,

0:01:300:01:32

like Hollywood and the uber-exclusive Beverly Hills.

0:01:320:01:36

One of the first things you're going to do in Santa Monica,

0:01:370:01:40

especially for a family holiday, is hit the beach.

0:01:400:01:43

Yeah, and if this beach looks familiar,

0:01:430:01:46

then you're showing your age because this was the backdrop to the hit

0:01:460:01:50

'90s TV series Baywatch.

0:01:500:01:52

Maybe it's the Baywatch link,

0:01:520:01:54

but LA has got a reputation for being the home of the body-obsessed.

0:01:540:01:57

And to be fair, they do seem to have a bit of a fitness fixation.

0:01:570:02:01

So if you like to work up a sweat on holiday,

0:02:050:02:08

then you've come to the right place.

0:02:080:02:10

And we're doing a bit of gentle exercise ourselves.

0:02:110:02:15

Lauren Hodgson recommended that we hire a bike and take a ride along

0:02:150:02:18

the world's longest coastal cycle path.

0:02:180:02:21

And it's not just for bicycles.

0:02:240:02:26

Skateboards, roller-skates, tricycles, jogging or walking, and, er,

0:02:260:02:31

dog-boarding, are all OK in LA.

0:02:310:02:33

The Marvin Braude Bike Trail, to give it its official title,

0:02:360:02:39

runs for 22 miles along the Los Angeles coastline.

0:02:390:02:42

And there are places to hire bikes all along the route.

0:02:420:02:44

First stop on your bike ride has to be the famous Santa Monica Pier.

0:02:490:02:53

For a lot of people, this is the end of the road.

0:02:530:02:55

Because right here is the official ending to the legendary Route 66.

0:02:550:02:59

And as the song goes, Joe?

0:02:590:03:01

# Winds all the way from Chicago to LA

0:03:010:03:04

# Get your kicks on Route 66. #

0:03:040:03:07

Don't give up the day job, Joe.

0:03:070:03:08

This iconic pier has been a mecca for tourists flocking to the

0:03:110:03:15

West Coast for over 100 years.

0:03:150:03:17

It's a bit of a mashup of styles.

0:03:170:03:19

The original pier has been extended over time, to include shops,

0:03:190:03:22

restaurants, amusements and entertainment.

0:03:220:03:25

And I've bumped into the Connelly sisters from Monaghan.

0:03:260:03:29

So you only got here a few days ago.

0:03:290:03:31

What have you been up to so far?

0:03:310:03:33

We got a bit of shopping done. We went to the outlets just outside.

0:03:330:03:36

Lovely.

0:03:360:03:38

And yeah, just had a walk along the beach.

0:03:380:03:40

Went to Venice Beach, it's really cool.

0:03:400:03:43

Nice. So what are the plans over the next few days?

0:03:430:03:45

Do you want to try and do some Kardashian spotting, is that right?

0:03:450:03:48

Yeah, Calabasas. We're going to Calabasas, trying to spot the Kardashians.

0:03:480:03:51

Because you're kind of Monaghan's answer to the Kardashians yourselves.

0:03:510:03:55

LAUGHTER

0:03:550:03:56

-Keeping up with the Connellys!

-Keeping up with the Connellys!

0:03:560:03:59

You know, Mairead, coming to LA, I thought it was going to be glamour,

0:04:010:04:04

-the glitz.

-Mm-hmm.

-You know, Tinseltown.

0:04:040:04:07

-Yeah.

-It's a bit more like Bray, isn't it?

0:04:070:04:09

There is nothing wrong with Bray, Joe.

0:04:090:04:11

No, no. Amusements!

0:04:110:04:12

Pacific Park is a classic old school fairground built over the ocean,

0:04:150:04:20

and it features the world's only solar-powered Ferris wheel.

0:04:200:04:23

All right, it's not Disneyland.

0:04:260:04:28

But the kids will still love it.

0:04:280:04:29

And if you've come this far,

0:04:290:04:30

you may as well shell out for a ride on the Scrambler.

0:04:300:04:33

A 20-minute bike ride south of Santa Monica Pier

0:04:420:04:45

brings you to Venice.

0:04:450:04:46

Apart from its great surf and wide sandy beach,

0:04:480:04:51

it's a cool hang-out for creative types, as well as surfers and skaters.

0:04:510:04:55

And it's also had some famous residents, including Julia Roberts,

0:04:560:05:00

Kate Beckinsale and Nicolas Cage.

0:05:000:05:02

Zoe Rainey said, "Joe, get yourself along to Venice Beach,

0:05:030:05:06

"you'll love the characters."

0:05:060:05:08

You know me too well, Zoe.

0:05:080:05:09

The Venice Boardwalk is a 1.5 mile pedestrian walkway.

0:05:120:05:16

It's a great place to soak up the atmosphere and maybe pick up a souvenir.

0:05:160:05:20

But the real attraction here is people watching.

0:05:200:05:23

And one thing you've got to do when you're here is take a gander about and appreciate the

0:05:260:05:30

street art. We think we've got great murals back home.

0:05:300:05:33

We've got nothing on what you see over here.

0:05:330:05:36

"You shoved my man into the meat grinder."

0:05:360:05:38

Some of the murals along the boardwalk are as tall as two storeys,

0:05:410:05:44

which have just become part of the landscape.

0:05:440:05:47

A bit like this skatepark,

0:05:470:05:49

which is now a permanent feature on the Venice beachfront.

0:05:490:05:52

Venice Beach was the birthplace of the skateboarding phenomenon.

0:05:560:05:59

Nearly half a century later, it's still a huge scene here.

0:05:590:06:02

Look at this skatepark - amazing.

0:06:020:06:04

Santa Monica is a great location to base yourself for exploring LA.

0:06:150:06:19

And of course, it has lots of accommodation options.

0:06:190:06:22

It is, however, one of the more expensive areas to stay.

0:06:220:06:25

And it also has a whopping 14% hotel room tax.

0:06:250:06:29

So it's worth shopping around.

0:06:290:06:32

We found the Travelodge Santa Monica on Pico Boulevard.

0:06:320:06:36

It's a ten-minute drive from the beach,

0:06:360:06:38

and it does have free parking, which is a big deal in LA.

0:06:380:06:42

There are accessible guest rooms and prices also include

0:06:420:06:45

a continental breakfast.

0:06:450:06:46

But if you're looking for some quirky, old school Californian style,

0:06:490:06:53

then the Palihouse is a boutique lodge with a real homely feel,

0:06:530:06:56

and only a short walk from the beach and shops.

0:06:560:07:00

You can stay at one of their 17 studio residences,

0:07:000:07:03

which include a well-equipped kitchen.

0:07:030:07:06

Or for a bit of luxury, you could stay at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel on Ocean Boulevard,

0:07:090:07:14

right across the road from the beach.

0:07:140:07:16

The hotel has over 300 guest rooms and suites.

0:07:160:07:20

But the unique feature here is the 31 luxury bungalows beside the pool.

0:07:200:07:24

And I caught up with the hotel's manager and chairman of the

0:07:260:07:30

Santa Monica Tourism and Travel Board, Ellis O'Connor,

0:07:300:07:33

who happens to be from Hollywood.

0:07:330:07:35

County Down, that is. So, Ellis, how long have you lived in Santa Monica?

0:07:350:07:38

I've been here now - 20 years next month.

0:07:380:07:41

I like what you've done with the place.

0:07:410:07:43

-The bungalows?

-Yes.

0:07:430:07:44

They are a unique selling point, they really are.

0:07:440:07:47

This hotel was built in 1928.

0:07:470:07:50

And in those days it was the location where Greta Garbo moved, when she was

0:07:500:07:53

moving from Sweden and trying to make it in film.

0:07:530:07:56

-Get out!

-We had President Clinton...

0:07:560:07:58

Used to stay in the bungalows over there when he was President.

0:07:580:08:01

I can't say who stayed with him, but he stayed over there.

0:08:010:08:03

LAUGHTER

0:08:030:08:05

We have... Sally Field is a local.

0:08:050:08:07

Anthony Hopkins shot a movie here. We were used as part of Remington Steele.

0:08:070:08:10

We were used for Dallas, the TV series.

0:08:100:08:12

-Wow.

-Most recently, Entourage came in and used us.

0:08:120:08:15

And the bungalows represent the authentic way to live in Santa Monica.

0:08:150:08:19

If you had three things to recommend to someone coming to Santa Monica,

0:08:190:08:23

Los Angeles, what would be the three things you recommend?

0:08:230:08:25

You have to go to the promenade for your shopping,

0:08:250:08:27

the pier for your recreation,

0:08:270:08:30

and I would go probably into Venice for the dining.

0:08:300:08:33

That's it, succinct.

0:08:330:08:35

-I love it.

-And you can get there all on the same bike.

0:08:350:08:38

Ha-ha. That's a killer line. He's done this before.

0:08:380:08:41

LAUGHTER

0:08:410:08:43

It's fair to say that this is a city that likes its cars.

0:08:450:08:49

They say that there is approximately one car for every two people in LA.

0:08:490:08:54

And while most cities are built around rivers or a harbour,

0:08:540:08:57

LA is built around its giant freeways.

0:08:570:09:01

And the traffic jams are legendary.

0:09:010:09:03

Now, they say the only way to get around Los Angeles is by car.

0:09:050:09:09

But I assure you, you really don't need that kind of hassle.

0:09:090:09:11

There are other alternatives.

0:09:110:09:14

Like that, for instance.

0:09:140:09:15

A current campaign to encourage Angelinos to walk,

0:09:170:09:21

cycle and to use public transport has had some success.

0:09:210:09:24

In fact, a brand-new multi-million-dollar rail service has just opened,

0:09:250:09:29

taking passengers from Santa Monica to Downtown LA.

0:09:290:09:33

This is it, the Expo.

0:09:330:09:35

Now I know what you're thinking - it's just a train.

0:09:350:09:37

But here in LA,

0:09:370:09:39

getting people to move from their cars to public transport is a big deal.

0:09:390:09:43

For me, the best way to get around Santa Monica is on foot.

0:09:440:09:47

Everything is within short walking distance of your hotel.

0:09:470:09:50

Including some great shops.

0:09:500:09:52

The Third Street Promenade in the heart of Santa Monica is a

0:09:550:09:58

pedestrian precinct that has all the shopping you would ever want.

0:09:580:10:01

But if you're prepared to travel beyond Santa Monica,

0:10:040:10:06

there are plenty of other shopping options.

0:10:060:10:09

About 30 minutes away is the open-air shopping mall, The Grove,

0:10:110:10:14

where you can browse the shops and enjoy the dancing fountains and

0:10:140:10:18

street vendors.

0:10:180:10:19

For top-end designer stores,

0:10:210:10:23

there's the famous Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.

0:10:230:10:26

But I'm taking a gander along Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood,

0:10:260:10:30

known for cutting-edge labels and designer boutiques.

0:10:300:10:33

When you're out shopping in LA,

0:10:350:10:36

there's tonnes of stores that are out of most people's price range.

0:10:360:10:40

But do you know what? It's still fun to look.

0:10:400:10:44

The Kelly Wearstler store oozes LA style,

0:10:440:10:47

and the interior designer has an impressive client list, including

0:10:470:10:51

A-list celebrities Cameron Diaz, Gwen Stefani and Ben Stiller.

0:10:510:10:55

And if you can afford it,

0:10:570:10:59

you could bring home a little piece of LA style to your living room.

0:10:590:11:02

Well, I've decided this is my favourite piece in the whole store.

0:11:040:11:08

And it's all mine for 6,500.

0:11:080:11:10

Chocolate - now I always have enough money to buy chocolate.

0:11:140:11:18

And here at Compartes on Melrose Place,

0:11:180:11:20

they combine great design with great chocolate.

0:11:200:11:23

It's tasteful, and tasty.

0:11:230:11:26

Not only is all the packaging here just gorgeous,

0:11:260:11:28

but check out the chocolate itself - look at that!

0:11:280:11:33

It's almost too pretty to eat.

0:11:330:11:35

So they're very LA-centric, which is what's so great about them.

0:11:350:11:38

Palm trees, cactus.

0:11:380:11:39

This one's coffee with the palm trees on it.

0:11:390:11:41

-Mm-hmm.

-Do you like peanut butter?

0:11:410:11:43

-I love peanut butter.

-This is my favourite. You know what, I'm going to have one with you.

0:11:430:11:47

-So, cheers.

-And peanut butter's good for you.

0:11:470:11:49

-Uh-huh.

-So, you know.

0:11:490:11:50

Mmm!

0:11:500:11:52

You are a real-life Willy Wonka, and I've met you.

0:11:520:11:55

HE CHUCKLES

0:11:550:11:57

OK, let's face it.

0:11:590:12:00

If you come to LA,

0:12:000:12:02

it's unlikely you're going to bump into any A-list movie stars.

0:12:020:12:05

So the only way to get close to them is by stalking them.

0:12:050:12:09

And there are people who can take you to where they live.

0:12:110:12:14

Do you feel like a movie star, or you look like you a movie star?

0:12:160:12:19

Elizabeth Taylor married husband number four, here on the left, everyone.

0:12:190:12:22

And that was Eddie Fisher that she married.

0:12:220:12:24

-Oh!

-Husband number five and number six, the love of her life,

0:12:240:12:27

-does anybody remember?

-Richard...

0:12:270:12:29

-Richard Burton.

-There you go, very good.

0:12:290:12:31

-I like the quiz element to this.

-Yes, me, too.

0:12:310:12:34

Our expert guide to the stars is Lisa,

0:12:360:12:39

who is giving us a VIP ride around Beverly Hills.

0:12:390:12:42

So, welcome to Beverly Hills 90210.

0:12:420:12:44

You're on one of the most iconic streets in all of LA.

0:12:440:12:47

In just a little bit, we're going to see where one of our favourite

0:12:470:12:51

actors lives. Al Pacino. He lives up here on the right-hand side.

0:12:510:12:54

-Who-hah!

-Who-ha! Yes.

0:12:540:12:56

-Both of us are big fans.

-You're going past Al Pacino's house.

0:12:560:12:59

I'm going past Al Pacino's house.

0:12:590:13:01

We're all going past Al Pacino's house!

0:13:010:13:03

Right here, everyone.

0:13:030:13:05

Green gate, white house.

0:13:050:13:07

Oh, the front door's open. Is he expecting us?

0:13:070:13:09

It is, his white Range Rover's right there.

0:13:090:13:11

This is Al Pacino's house, everyone.

0:13:110:13:13

On the right-hand side would be the former home of Jackie Collins,

0:13:130:13:16

everyone. English author and actress, right here on the right.

0:13:160:13:19

-It's so big.

-Huge.

-It's like a football field.

0:13:190:13:22

There's money in airport novels, isn't there?

0:13:220:13:24

Wow.

0:13:240:13:26

To the right, this was the last home of Elvis Presley.

0:13:270:13:31

When he bought it in 1960, he paid a whopping 28,000.

0:13:310:13:34

My God. Quickly look left, coming up,

0:13:340:13:36

this three-storey home is the house that Michael Jackson rented for

0:13:360:13:41

100,000 a month rent. If you look,

0:13:410:13:43

you'll see the balconies where we would see the King of Pop with his family.

0:13:430:13:46

He would wave, he would say hello.

0:13:460:13:48

That's the house on our left.

0:13:480:13:50

If a long-haul flight isn't for you,

0:13:520:13:55

then check out Mairead's culinary short break in County Fermanagh.

0:13:550:13:59

Themed breaks have become really popular, from wild and adventurous

0:14:020:14:06

outdoor breaks, to relaxing spa retreats.

0:14:060:14:09

I'm in Fermanagh on a break that's themed all around food and cookery.

0:14:090:14:12

I mean, what's not to love?

0:14:120:14:14

I'm joining my guide for today's culinary tour of the Fermanagh Lakes,

0:14:150:14:19

-Barry Flanagan. How are you doing, Barry.

-How are you?

0:14:190:14:21

Nice to meet you. Woo!

0:14:210:14:23

Barry's water taxi offers a variety of tours on the lough.

0:14:240:14:27

I'm taking his food trail, to learn about some of the produce from

0:14:290:14:32

Fermanagh, and to taste some of its celebrated foods.

0:14:320:14:35

The lough features a maze of islands,

0:14:410:14:43

many of which are havens for fishermen and holiday-makers during

0:14:430:14:46

the summer, and others which are used for farming.

0:14:460:14:50

So we're just coming up to Devenish island here now.

0:14:500:14:52

-Yeah.

-And this is where Morris Kettyle, who owns Kettyle Meats,

0:14:520:14:57

keeps some of his rare breeds.

0:14:570:14:58

They have the whole island to themselves,

0:14:580:15:00

and they're foraging for different herbs,

0:15:000:15:02

-and they're eating the grass that's on the island here.

-So all that flavour goes through.

0:15:020:15:06

-It comes out in the meat.

-It goes through the meat.

0:15:060:15:08

Yeah, absolutely.

0:15:080:15:10

To give me a taste of Fermanagh,

0:15:140:15:16

the tour includes a picnic that is full of local produce.

0:15:160:15:19

A perfect stop-off point is Crom Estate on the edge of Lough Erne.

0:15:210:15:25

So what we have here is some local breads.

0:15:270:15:30

We've got local jams, local beers.

0:15:300:15:33

And some cheeses here with a port jelly.

0:15:330:15:35

We have also Fermanagh black bacon on the pan here.

0:15:370:15:40

And we've got some locally-sourced ice cream.

0:15:400:15:43

-Brilliant.

-So what we have here is some Kettyle Irish beef,

0:15:430:15:46

which we saw... The cows earlier on Devenish Island.

0:15:460:15:50

Lovely.

0:15:500:15:51

Mmm!

0:15:520:15:54

Next up on my culinary boat trip is Belle Isle Castle,

0:15:580:16:01

where I'm staying the night.

0:16:010:16:03

But before I check in, I'm checking out the Belle Isle Cookery School,

0:16:030:16:07

where chef Joe Kelly is giving me a quick lesson in how to make...

0:16:070:16:11

'brown bread.' OK, so roll it?

0:16:110:16:14

'Something I haven't tried to do since school.

0:16:140:16:16

'And it's all coming back to me.'

0:16:160:16:18

So, very simply, what we want to do... We're going to give this kind of

0:16:180:16:21

a little press down. We want to deflate it.

0:16:210:16:24

-Mm-hmm.

-OK? So what you're doing is you're kind of stretching the dough

0:16:240:16:26

on the underside a little bit.

0:16:260:16:28

Flip it over. Perfect.

0:16:280:16:29

OK, so here we have one in the oven,

0:16:290:16:32

all ready to go. That's great. That looks really, really good.

0:16:320:16:36

That's looking pretty good. What do you think?

0:16:360:16:40

-Oh, I'm in heaven.

-That's great. You did well.

0:16:400:16:43

Very well.

0:16:430:16:44

There are several accommodation options at Belle Isle.

0:16:440:16:47

For a special occasion,

0:16:470:16:49

you can hire the castle, which sleeps up to ten and has beautiful bedrooms

0:16:490:16:52

overlooking the lake. It comes with a fully-equipped modern kitchen.

0:16:520:16:56

Or if you prefer someone else to cook for you,

0:16:560:16:59

you can dine in the grand banqueting room.

0:16:590:17:02

There are also self-catering accommodation options on the castle grounds,

0:17:020:17:06

which are great for families,

0:17:060:17:08

including eight courtyard cottages,

0:17:080:17:10

which can sleep between two and eight people.

0:17:100:17:14

For a perfect finale to my gourmet boat trip,

0:17:160:17:19

Barry is dropping me off at the Watermill restaurant.

0:17:190:17:22

It was built by award-winning French chef and passionate fisherman,

0:17:220:17:25

Pascal Brissaud, who has prepared some more local produce with a French twist.

0:17:250:17:30

Pascal, talk to me about what you've prepared for me today.

0:17:300:17:32

Yeah, what we've prepared today is really something very local.

0:17:320:17:37

-Mm-hmm.

-We have here - a nice Fivemiletown goat's cheese tartlet

0:17:370:17:41

with red beetroot in three ways.

0:17:410:17:43

-And what about this one?

-That is a pouch of local duck.

0:17:430:17:47

The sauce is a nice port and creamy sauce with mushroom.

0:17:470:17:50

So while I'm tucking in, why did you choose Fermanagh?

0:17:500:17:53

-Why here?

-Because of the fishing.

0:17:530:17:55

Because the lough here, it's obvious, it's just a paradise for me.

0:17:550:17:59

This water has one of the best pike and trout and perch fishing in the world.

0:17:590:18:05

I can see why this is the end of the food trail.

0:18:050:18:07

This is a great place to end.

0:18:070:18:09

Yeah, OK.

0:18:090:18:11

We're on a getaway in Los Angeles, California,

0:18:130:18:16

taking advantage of the direct flights from Ireland.

0:18:160:18:18

So far, we've been biking on the beach in Santa Monica.

0:18:190:18:24

Stalking the stars in Beverly Hills.

0:18:240:18:27

And shopping in Hollywood.

0:18:270:18:28

Here in the heart of Hollywood is the TCL Chinese Theatre.

0:18:330:18:37

Home to many a red-carpet movie premiere,

0:18:390:18:42

the entrance to the theatre has iconic status.

0:18:420:18:46

Nearly 300 movie legends have left their hand and footprints on what

0:18:460:18:50

has become known as the Forecourt of the Stars.

0:18:500:18:53

And the TCL Chinese Theatre has also provided a backdrop for some

0:18:530:18:56

legendary cinema.

0:18:560:18:58

The Chinese Theatre was established in 1927 by acclaimed

0:18:580:19:03

Hollywood showman Sid Grauman.

0:19:030:19:05

Ha-ha, Travolta's shoes!

0:19:050:19:07

Fantastic.

0:19:070:19:09

The story goes that Grauman accidentally stepped in the wet concrete while the

0:19:090:19:12

theatre was under construction.

0:19:120:19:14

And that gave him the inspiration for what we see today.

0:19:140:19:19

No matter who or what kind of genre of cinema you love,

0:19:190:19:22

you're going to find at least five people that you adore here in the

0:19:220:19:25

Forecourt of the Stars.

0:19:250:19:27

Like, for example...

0:19:270:19:29

IMITATES CAINE: Down here we have Michael Caine.

0:19:290:19:32

And you will find that Michael prefers a surprisingly

0:19:320:19:36

sensible pair of shoes.

0:19:360:19:37

If you're in need of some culture,

0:19:390:19:41

you'll be happy to know that LA has more museums than any city in America.

0:19:410:19:45

The Getty Museum is based at two locations.

0:19:450:19:49

The Getty Centre holds one of the world's largest art collections.

0:19:490:19:52

Founded by billionaire philanthropist J Paul Getty,

0:19:520:19:56

it attracts over one million visitors each year.

0:19:560:19:59

But today, I've come to check out the Getty Villa,

0:19:590:20:01

which he built in the style of an ancient Roman villa.

0:20:010:20:05

J Paul Getty began collecting Classical antiquities in the 1930s,

0:20:070:20:11

and it became his lifelong passion.

0:20:110:20:13

He commissioned this property,

0:20:140:20:16

inspired by a house uncovered from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius,

0:20:160:20:20

and the tranquillity of the gardens is a complete contrast to the hustle

0:20:200:20:24

and bustle of LA.

0:20:240:20:25

Entry is free, although you do need to book online.

0:20:260:20:29

Eric, tell me a little bit about the man, J Paul Getty.

0:20:310:20:35

He made his money primarily inheriting the oil business from his father,

0:20:350:20:40

Getty Oil.

0:20:400:20:42

Then expanding it in the Middle East.

0:20:420:20:44

And in the 1950s he was called one of the richest men in the

0:20:460:20:48

world, if not THE richest man in the world.

0:20:480:20:51

So this place, these beautiful gardens that we're walking around,

0:20:510:20:54

was essentially his summer residence, or one of them.

0:20:540:20:57

Yeah, he had four residences in Los Angeles.

0:20:570:21:01

-He purchased...

-That's plenty in one place alone to have.

0:21:010:21:04

-It's a big city.

-OK, so you're in Santa Monica,

0:21:040:21:07

or just outside Santa Monica,

0:21:070:21:09

and you can be in a place like this that is so peaceful and relaxing.

0:21:090:21:12

Yeah, it is. When you enter the museum, when you enter the grounds,

0:21:120:21:16

it is amazing how the rest of Los Angeles seems to melt away.

0:21:160:21:21

It does, yeah. And you know what,

0:21:210:21:23

you don't even hear the sounds of LA here.

0:21:230:21:25

Right.

0:21:250:21:26

A big city like LA needs a big city park.

0:21:310:21:34

And this is it -

0:21:340:21:36

Griffith Park is one of the biggest urban parks in North America,

0:21:360:21:39

covering over 4,000 acres in the Santa Monica mountains,

0:21:390:21:42

overlooking Hollywood and Downtown LA.

0:21:420:21:45

The big attraction up here is the Griffith Observatory,

0:21:470:21:51

which opened in 1935.

0:21:510:21:52

It was donated to the city of Los Angeles by Welsh philanthropist

0:21:560:22:00

Griffith J Griffith.

0:22:000:22:01

Its Art Deco domes contain working telescopes,

0:22:030:22:06

and inside there's a science museum.

0:22:060:22:09

You can learn about the stars, and admission is free.

0:22:090:22:12

You know what? It's worth even coming up just for the views.

0:22:120:22:16

Unsurprisingly, the spectacular setting has caught the attention of

0:22:170:22:21

many Hollywood film-makers.

0:22:210:22:23

And you might recognise it from films like Terminator,

0:22:230:22:25

Charlie's Angels, and Transformers.

0:22:250:22:28

Probably the most famous film shot at Griffith Observatory was the 1955

0:22:290:22:33

Rebel Without A Cause. It made a superstar out of James Dean,

0:22:330:22:36

and the observatory itself.

0:22:360:22:38

Another iconic Hollywood landmark is Bob's Big Boy Restaurant.

0:22:440:22:48

Its classic 1950s diner look has made it the perfect location for

0:22:490:22:54

some memorable movies.

0:22:540:22:55

Well, the one that sticks in my mind most is its use in Austin Powers

0:22:550:22:58

International Man Of Mystery.

0:22:580:23:00

When the cryogenically-frozen Dr Evil and Mr Bigglesworth escape into space.

0:23:000:23:06

Look at his little face!

0:23:060:23:08

You come to LA, you have to come to Bob's Big Boy Burger and get the

0:23:140:23:18

classic combo and a couple of milkshakes.

0:23:180:23:21

Love this. Have you tried yours yet?

0:23:210:23:22

In a little minute. Do you know who came here,

0:23:220:23:24

who sat at this actual booth?

0:23:240:23:26

-The Beatles.

-What?

0:23:260:23:27

The Beatles came here. Jimmy Dean used to come here.

0:23:270:23:29

Do you know who comes here now?

0:23:290:23:31

-Vanilla Ice.

-I wonder, does he order...?

0:23:310:23:34

-Vanilla shake?

-With...

0:23:340:23:36

BOTH: Ice, ice, baby!

0:23:360:23:38

But come here on a Friday and the

0:23:420:23:44

big treat is outside in the car park.

0:23:440:23:46

Because Bob's Big Boy is where Los Angeles car enthusiasts gather every

0:23:480:23:53

Friday afternoon to show off their classic American automobiles.

0:23:530:23:57

This is Paul, the creator and owner

0:23:580:24:00

of this fine, very cool automobile.

0:24:000:24:03

Paul, tell me about this. What make of car was this originally?

0:24:030:24:06

Well, originally, this is a 1951 Mercury-Style.

0:24:060:24:09

I purchased it about three years ago and decided to give it kind of a

0:24:090:24:12

-Mad Max treatment.

-This seems to be quite an LA, California thing.

0:24:120:24:15

-Oh, absolutely.

-So why is it such a big kind of car culture thing here,

0:24:150:24:19

-the custom thing?

-California, especially Los Angeles,

0:24:190:24:21

it's all roads and freeways.

0:24:210:24:23

And the car culture is huge in general.

0:24:230:24:25

-You want to take it for a spin?

-Oh, yeah, you want to go?

0:24:250:24:28

I'll get you up in the gun turret.

0:24:280:24:30

VINYL SCRATCHES

0:24:300:24:31

'Hang on, did he just say he'd get me up in the gun turret?'

0:24:310:24:33

HE LAUGHS

0:24:330:24:35

MIMICS GUNFIRE

0:24:390:24:41

Hell, yeah! Come on.

0:24:500:24:53

A huge draw for families coming to LA is, of course, the theme parks.

0:24:540:24:59

Disneyland, the original Disney theme park,

0:24:590:25:02

is still Southern California's most popular amusement park.

0:25:020:25:05

And it continues to add new attractions.

0:25:050:25:07

Its latest venture - Star Wars.

0:25:070:25:10

There's also Universal Studios, Hollywood,

0:25:120:25:15

with lots of rides inspired by the movies,

0:25:150:25:18

along with the Universal City Walk and the ever-popular studio tour.

0:25:180:25:22

But Meghan McArdle from Armagh told us to check out the studio tour

0:25:220:25:26

right here at Warner Brothers.

0:25:260:25:27

Hi, guys. I'm John, your tour guide.

0:25:290:25:31

-Hi, John. How are you?

-Hi, John.

-Nice to meet you. Are you ready to see the lot?

0:25:310:25:34

-We sure are.

-Hop in, let's do this.

0:25:340:25:36

Brilliant.

0:25:360:25:37

Some of the best-known classic films have been made here over the years.

0:25:400:25:44

Casablanca, Dirty Harry, Batman, The Matrix, Harry Potter,

0:25:440:25:48

and TV shows like Friends and Big Bang Theory.

0:25:480:25:51

So, John, are productions actually being filmed while we're sort of

0:25:530:25:56

-driving through the lot?

-It's the best part of this tour,

0:25:560:25:58

is that you're taking a tour of a real working production facility.

0:25:580:26:03

-That is unreal.

-Yeah.

0:26:030:26:04

This is Hennesy Street.

0:26:060:26:07

This is one of many backlot sets that we have here at Warner Brothers Studios.

0:26:070:26:11

-Brilliant.

-Originally built in the 1930s, this one.

0:26:110:26:14

I recognise this as Friends.

0:26:140:26:16

-This is Friends!

-You are good.

0:26:160:26:18

This is New York. Any time you saw the cast of Friends doing a scene

0:26:180:26:21

outside, walking around the streets of New York, it was here.

0:26:210:26:24

-All in LA.

-All in LA.

0:26:240:26:26

This is also Gotham City from three Batman movies.

0:26:260:26:29

Oh!

0:26:290:26:31

BATMAN IMITATION: Hooray! We're in Gotham.

0:26:310:26:33

-He's getting in character.

-He is.

0:26:330:26:35

-Let's get out of here. Let's go see something else.

-Yay.

0:26:350:26:38

OK, while you boys go off and play Batman and Robin,

0:26:400:26:43

I'm going to meet Friends for a coffee.

0:26:430:26:46

Oh, I love this!

0:26:490:26:51

Could I be on a more iconic TV set?

0:26:510:26:53

Always knew myself and Rachel were meant to be friends.

0:26:570:27:00

CAMERA CLICKS

0:27:000:27:02

ECHOES: So, John.

0:27:040:27:07

Here we are in a really big room filled with Batmobiles.

0:27:070:27:12

I know, it's the coolest thing of all time.

0:27:120:27:14

This is the coolest thing I've ever seen in my life!

0:27:140:27:16

Look at this - this is every single Batmobile, apart from the 1960s one.

0:27:160:27:19

This is every single Batmobile, Batcycle, Batplane.

0:27:190:27:22

They're all here. This is the Holy Grail.

0:27:220:27:24

Even if you're not the biggest Batman fan,

0:27:240:27:27

if you don't know the storyline very well,

0:27:270:27:30

you can appreciate the construction and the look.

0:27:300:27:33

They're like little masterpieces.

0:27:330:27:35

Yeah. And if you're not a Batman fan, we pity them.

0:27:350:27:37

I know.

0:27:370:27:38

It's not just about the cars.

0:27:400:27:43

Just about everything else that is used in the movies is here in the

0:27:430:27:46

props store.

0:27:460:27:48

It's an Aladdin's cave of stuff that is used in films and TV shows

0:27:480:27:52

all over Hollywood.

0:27:520:27:54

My favourite? President Frank Underwood's desk from House Of Cards.

0:27:560:28:01

So, Mairead, what did you make of Los Angeles?

0:28:080:28:10

I loved it. I've loved the beach, the pier, just general

0:28:100:28:13

-people watching, really.

-Yeah, same here. I mean, it's movie town.

0:28:130:28:17

I love it. It's like a living, breathing Madame Tussauds.

0:28:170:28:19

-Yeah.

-And here we are underneath the greatest selfie spot in the world.

0:28:190:28:23

-Give us your phone.

-I forgot it.

0:28:230:28:25

I'm joking, come on. Here we go.

0:28:250:28:28

Love it!
