Good evening and welcome to BBC Channel Islands. Our headlines

:00:08.:00:12.

tonight, serious questions about the future of education in Jersey.

:00:13.:00:17.

Find out why the minister walked out of a BBC interview. But this is

:00:17.:00:22.

a huge Parker if you read the paper, it is not. I mean it, it is not.

:00:22.:00:29.

Also tonight, criminally underfunded. Demand grows for the

:00:29.:00:33.

cash-strapped Victim Support services.

:00:33.:00:37.

And working the worldwide web, a promo video to get youngsters into

:00:37.:00:47.
:00:47.:00:53.

Cutting subsidies to fee-paying schools, doing away with school

:00:53.:00:58.

milk, GCSE results that appear to be lower than those in the UK, all

:00:58.:01:02.

in all it has been a rocky year for Jersey's Education Department. Now

:01:02.:01:06.

you are being asked to share your thoughts on the Isle of's school

:01:06.:01:10.

set-up, although the Education Minister is not always keen to be

:01:10.:01:14.

questioned on it, as our reporter Beckie Williams found out.

:01:14.:01:18.

These children may be at the start of their schooling, but changes to

:01:18.:01:22.

Jersey's education system could affect them the most. Their parents

:01:22.:01:26.

are currently making important decisions about their next move.

:01:26.:01:30.

What is in the News of the moment with private education, it should

:01:30.:01:34.

be means tested. There are people who can afford to pay for their own

:01:34.:01:39.

education without being subsidised by the States. It is fair that to

:01:39.:01:42.

subsidise Foster befit his changed I'm not going to show how they will

:01:42.:01:45.

accommodate children who will go to the state's school, so we're all

:01:45.:01:51.

those children go? Disappointed when they took away the milk, but

:01:51.:01:55.

otherwise the boys have been really happy here. Those views are being

:01:55.:01:59.

taken into account. Parents and teachers are being asked to read

:01:59.:02:04.

this 50 two-page document. In a dark questions about our education

:02:04.:02:06.

system's selective nature, the courses available to adults and the

:02:06.:02:11.

island, and support given to those with special needs. Earlier this

:02:11.:02:15.

year it was revealed GCSE results at state schools in Jenia -- Jersey

:02:15.:02:19.

appear to be lower than many UK schools. Ahead of the education it

:02:19.:02:23.

-- the head of the education review group told the BBC he wants to see

:02:23.:02:28.

changes, soon. I am not naive to think in of that league tables are

:02:28.:02:33.

the be-all and end-all, and they can be too rigid. But I would like

:02:33.:02:36.

to see a broader debate about how we judge effectiveness in our

:02:36.:02:43.

schools and I think exam results would be part of that. But Jersey's

:02:43.:02:45.

Education Minister says changes to our system are not needed, so I

:02:46.:02:49.

asked him why did he want to cut subsidies to fee-paying schools?

:02:49.:02:54.

The whole debate about fee-paying schools has been well rehearsed.

:02:54.:02:59.

The importance of this document is that it is designed to cover all

:02:59.:03:03.

sectors of education. It is time that be widened and broadened the

:03:03.:03:08.

debate, not to focus on one small aspect of our education system.

:03:08.:03:13.

when I pressed him further on the issue... If you do cut subsidies...

:03:13.:03:18.

I am not going down the road. do not have -- I do have to ask you.

:03:18.:03:21.

The you do not have to ask me, this is not about fee-paying schools.

:03:21.:03:26.

But this is a huge part. If you read the paper, it is not. I mean

:03:26.:03:31.

it, it is not. But this is going to be huge part of the education...

:03:32.:03:39.

The education once -- the Education Minister wants your views.

:03:39.:03:42.

At the end of the day there is going to be a huge amount of

:03:42.:03:45.

pressure on the state system and the island...

:03:45.:03:48.

More people in Guernsey are using the Victim Support services than

:03:48.:03:52.

ever before. It offers advice and counselling for witnesses and

:03:52.:03:55.

victims of crime. But as Mike Wilkins reports, the charity itself

:03:55.:04:01.

needs help to keep going. Learning more about the effects of

:04:01.:04:04.

crime, these people were attending an open day today at the Victim

:04:04.:04:08.

Support centre within the Royal Court building. It is crucial for

:04:08.:04:12.

this organisation that people from all walks of life are aware of what

:04:12.:04:15.

support is available for victims and witnesses of crime in the

:04:15.:04:20.

island. In this purpose-built facility there is a video camera

:04:20.:04:24.

which enabled witnesses to give evidence in court without having

:04:24.:04:28.

the intimidation of going to court itself and the numbers of people

:04:28.:04:32.

using Victim Support has increased significantly over the years. In

:04:32.:04:37.

2005, just over 70 people used the service, by the end of last year

:04:37.:04:41.

that it increased to more than 500. With that increase comes an

:04:41.:04:49.

increase in demand and a need for more funding. Victims and witnesses

:04:49.:04:55.

are vital in order to have a court case, so we do need to encourage

:04:55.:05:00.

witnesses to come forward, so that would not be a good thing, if we

:05:00.:05:04.

had to reduce our service. We are just hoping and trying to be as

:05:04.:05:09.

positive as we can that we can actually find some financial

:05:09.:05:13.

support. The centre has one full- time member of staff and one part-

:05:13.:05:16.

time -- part-time, helped out by ten volunteers. It is clear they

:05:16.:05:19.

have done a good job of increasing awareness of the support they offer,

:05:19.:05:23.

but if they don't get more funding than Victim Support could become a

:05:23.:05:31.

victim of its own success. It's been used a more news in brief.

:05:31.:05:35.

Air Southwest has confirmed the airline is to close after the end

:05:35.:05:38.

of September. The airline, which was brought by Eastern

:05:39.:05:42.

International Airways last year, says that following the closure of

:05:42.:05:46.

Plymouth airport, Newquay flights will not be financially viable. The

:05:46.:05:50.

currently up -- the company currently operates flights to

:05:50.:05:54.

Newquay via Plymouth. Police are trying to trace those behind us

:05:54.:05:59.

thousands of pounds worth of damage at Guernsey's Garenne Sports Stand.

:05:59.:06:02.

Water flooded into offices putting them out of action because of fears

:06:02.:06:06.

about electrical connections. Officers say 36 were deliberately

:06:06.:06:10.

blocked and taps left on for about half-an-hour. -- sinks were

:06:10.:06:15.

deliberately blocked. Sunday trading laws in Jersey could

:06:15.:06:19.

be about to change. The parish constables would still debate --

:06:19.:06:24.

would still decide which shops could trade. Those chosen can sell

:06:24.:06:28.

everything they normally would, but premises over 500 square foot would

:06:28.:06:32.

not be allowed to open. That is what has upset one shopkeeper in

:06:32.:06:37.

particular, he says it could mean redundancies.

:06:37.:06:41.

This farm shop has been going since 2003 and as you can see it now does

:06:41.:06:45.

a bit more than sell fruit and vegetables. Whilst those original

:06:45.:06:49.

stables are still on offer, this shop has grown is open seven days a

:06:49.:06:55.

week but that could come to an end because it is too big. The owner of

:06:55.:06:58.

this farm shop and Josie says some days -- says Sundays are his best

:06:58.:07:03.

day of trading and he says if these rules are passed and the States he

:07:03.:07:06.

will not be able to open and his profits will go down. It will have

:07:06.:07:11.

a big impact on our staffing levels, because everybody works on a rota,

:07:11.:07:18.

so there is one day out of the equation and it will mean

:07:18.:07:22.

redundancies, and not to be open on a Sunday will not only be

:07:22.:07:29.

detrimental for my business, but detrimental to the parish as a

:07:29.:07:34.

whole and to community of Jersey. Constable Len Norman is from the

:07:34.:07:37.

department responsible for bringing this proposition to the States.

:07:37.:07:43.

There is no limit on size currently, so it should publicise can open

:07:43.:07:45.

provided they sell goods on the government approved list, but this

:07:46.:07:49.

new law strict -- will restrict the opening of shops to 500 square

:07:49.:07:53.

metres if the proposition has approved and amended. REPORTER: Why

:07:53.:07:59.

is that? I don't think there is an appetite for retailers or the

:07:59.:08:03.

public for a free for all, so we want to keep Sunday Special and

:08:03.:08:08.

restrict the number of share shops that can open those that can open

:08:08.:08:11.

should not be restricted in what goods they can sell. The customers

:08:11.:08:15.

keep coming. Those on both sides will be hoping whatever is decided

:08:15.:08:22.

in the States next week will not stop the tills ringing.

Now to an unlikely internet hit. A government scheme to help young

people into work has seen a surge of success after a promotional

video filmed by one of the teenagers has been put upon line.

Goncalves hopes this film will lead to success in the film industry and

there has been a surge of success for the scheme itself. Since the

the young man behind it, whose dream of being a film-maker is a
