Good evening and welcome to the BBC in the Channel Islands. | :00:09. | :00:14.
They results are out and are A- level students are still | :00:14. | :00:24.
We talk to the man who survived a this crash at the weekend and has | :00:24. | :00:30.
already left hospital. And stay tuned for all the fun and | :00:30. | :00:40.
:00:40. | :00:44. | ||
atmospheric of this year's Gorey Thousands of Channel Islands | :00:44. | :00:47.
students are celebrating this evening after passing their A- | :00:47. | :00:52.
levels. As we report, the search is now on | :00:52. | :00:58.
to find enough university places and jobs to meet demand. | :00:58. | :01:04.
Years of academic toil boiled down to this. One envelope and the | :01:04. | :01:14.
:01:14. | :01:20. | ||
moment of truth. I gotta at A* and to as. After months of sweating it | :01:20. | :01:25.
out it finally came down to this day. It is brilliant, I can finally | :01:25. | :01:30.
relax. Many were celebrating getting into university but some | :01:30. | :01:34.
opted to earn a living locally. does not really matter because I | :01:34. | :01:39.
have got a job. I am working in the hospital and hopefully training to | :01:39. | :01:44.
be a paramedics. With accountancy if I go straight into work I do not | :01:44. | :01:48.
need to go to university to get where I want to be. The Channel | :01:48. | :01:53.
Islands did well with both Jersey and Guernsey attaining a 99% pass | :01:53. | :02:00.
rate. When it came to the number of students attaining A* or A grades, | :02:00. | :02:05.
the figures were much higher than the UK. Demand for university | :02:05. | :02:10.
places is later than ever with many keen to secure a place before the | :02:10. | :02:16.
increase in tuition fees in 2012. We were told it would be really | :02:16. | :02:21.
competitive. It has gone well though. I am glad to have got in | :02:21. | :02:26.
this year. It would have been more difficult if I had gone next year. | :02:26. | :02:30.
We're waiting for a decision about what is going to happen with | :02:30. | :02:36.
students about tuition fees. Our advice is to go ahead and apply. | :02:36. | :02:40.
Make sure they keep their options open. Today's results bring two | :02:40. | :02:44.
years of hard work to an end. While a day has brought good news for | :02:44. | :02:51.
some and uncertainty for others, many will just be glad it is over. | :02:52. | :02:56.
The police investigation into Sunday's stabbings has continued | :02:56. | :02:59.
today with further forensic examination of the crime scene. In | :02:59. | :03:04.
addition, officers at the incident room have identified more witnesses | :03:04. | :03:09.
under the process of interviewing them. Post-mortems have confirmed | :03:09. | :03:14.
that two of the three children died from stab wounds. It is expected or | :03:14. | :03:19.
post-mortems will be completed by Friday. Tonight, a special requiem | :03:19. | :03:24.
Mass is being held at St Thomas's Church for the victims. It is | :03:24. | :03:28.
expected to be heavily attended. One of the people who will be there | :03:28. | :03:33.
is at Monika Panasiuk, the Polish representative who will -- who | :03:33. | :03:40.
arrive to support the family. She came into the studio earlier. | :03:40. | :03:46.
Polish community are shocked, and they are in a very deep sorrow. But | :03:46. | :03:51.
they have to get through it. There was a fear when it first happened | :03:51. | :03:55.
that there would be a backlash against the Polish community. It | :03:55. | :03:59.
has turned out to be a domestic tragedy which could have been in | :03:59. | :04:04.
the UK or anywhere else. Has that fear gone away? It is very | :04:04. | :04:11.
difficult to say because it happened just a few days ago. | :04:11. | :04:15.
Probably, today it is a requiem Mass and we will see how things are | :04:15. | :04:22.
going. It is very difficult for me to say now, I think it takes time, | :04:22. | :04:27.
but we have had support from the Jersey community and I think the | :04:27. | :04:30.
Polish community will be able to get through this difficult time. | :04:30. | :04:35.
Why they are receiving a lot of support? Yes. They are receiving a | :04:35. | :04:43.
lot of support, a lot of e-mails, phone calls and text messages. They | :04:43. | :04:48.
have received words of condolences and are receiving offers of | :04:48. | :04:54.
financial support and there is a huge response from the community. | :04:54. | :05:01.
Briefly, what would you be doing over the next 24 hours? I have met | :05:01. | :05:08.
already the police, I have met parishioners, I had met some of | :05:08. | :05:12.
that representatives of the Polish community, and I am going to meet | :05:12. | :05:18.
the members of the victim's family. First of all, that it is a very | :05:18. | :05:25.
important thing. I am going to attend and the Requiem Mass tonight, | :05:25. | :05:30.
which is very very important. After the Mass, it will be an informal | :05:30. | :05:38.
meeting with the Polish community, in Polish. A man who crashed his | :05:38. | :05:43.
buggy at around 90 miles an hour during last weekend's sand racing | :05:43. | :05:47.
in Guernsey has been discharged from hospital with minor injuries. | :05:47. | :05:51.
Nigel Ozane had a narrow escape in one of the most dramatic crashes in | :05:51. | :05:56.
years. Today he told us about the experience. | :05:56. | :05:59.
Eyewitnesses say this car was travelling at around 90 miles an | :05:59. | :06:04.
hour when it hit the car in front, spinning out of control and | :06:04. | :06:08.
horrifying the onlookers. Nigel Ozane was the man in the car. | :06:08. | :06:14.
Lucky to be alive, the crash has stayed with him so. I have been | :06:14. | :06:19.
waking up sweating and shouting. What I can remember is hitting the | :06:19. | :06:26.
wheel of the car in front of me. After that, it all goes a bit blank. | :06:26. | :06:32.
It seems to come back to me when I am dozing off to sleep. When I'm | :06:32. | :06:38.
awake I don't remember much of. This paramedics saw the crash. He | :06:38. | :06:43.
treated Nigel while firemen tried to free him from his car. We first | :06:43. | :06:46.
thought he was going to have significant injuries because of the | :06:46. | :06:52.
way the body had somersaulted several times. Fortunately he only | :06:52. | :06:58.
had minor injuries. Sand racing meetings happen twice a month. This | :06:58. | :07:03.
has been described as one of the most dramatic crashes in years. The | :07:03. | :07:08.
force of it ripped the skin off both of Nigel's ankles. He | :07:08. | :07:15.
fractured his knee and bruised his hips and shoulders. It makes your | :07:15. | :07:20.
heart stopper a little bit. It is a racing incident, things like this | :07:20. | :07:25.
happen every now and then, you just have to get on with it. I am | :07:25. | :07:29.
looking forward to getting back in the car. Nigel hopes to be getting | :07:29. | :07:34.
back in his car as soon as possible. He has to rest for at least one | :07:34. | :07:40.
month so will have to make do with reading about motor sport. | :07:40. | :07:45.
There has been a slight rise in property prices in Jersey. They | :07:45. | :07:51.
have increased by 2%. A one- bedroomed flat will now cost on | :07:51. | :07:56.
average 209,000. Next, a yard of ale competition, a | :07:56. | :08:01.
spaghetti eating Challenge and all finished off with a massive fire | :08:01. | :08:06.
display. -- fireworks display. Hundreds of people are expected to | :08:06. | :08:11.
descend on the Jersey's East Coast today. | :08:11. | :08:16.
The son is shining. I am sat on a bale of hay on the back of a | :08:16. | :08:25.
tractor. Why? We're at the Gorey fate. You see all these lovely | :08:25. | :08:29.
people who have come to find out about this shore line. They want to | :08:30. | :08:34.
know about the castle, they want to know about when Gorey harbour was | :08:34. | :08:40.
built. They found a mermaid out their earlier on! There is a sunken | :08:40. | :08:44.
boat out there in the harbour. We find all sorts of things on that | :08:44. | :08:49.
shore line. They are all told to bring the bathing costumes and | :08:49. | :08:54.
their passports. We don't just stick to the shore, we go out into | :08:54. | :09:01.
the sea. I hope you have got your bathing costumes! I forgot to! This | :09:01. | :09:04.
is one of the aspects of the fate of this year, what else is going | :09:04. | :09:11.
on? On the beach right now is the treasure hunt, there is horse | :09:11. | :09:17.
racing, the bungee jump, all of these things are going on all the | :09:17. | :09:23.
time. The sandcastle competition is brilliant. You can test your sand | :09:23. | :09:32.
sculpture in skills. On stage at the moment is the beautiful baby | :09:32. | :09:40.
competition. The fun and frolics have until 11pm tonight? Absolutely | :09:40. | :09:46.
right. Are fireworks are always at 10:30pm. It is a brilliant display, | :09:46. | :09:53.
you must come and see the fireworks. We finish after that. We wrapped up | :09:53. | :10:01.
at round about 11pm. I am going to see if I can go for a ride on the | :10:01. | :10:10.
back of his tractor. Here is the Our island are having some of the | :10:10. | :10:15.
best of the weather at the moment. We're having a dry day with | :10:15. | :10:22.

front that is moving away from us now. Overnight tonight, the skies | :10:27. | :10:32.
will begin to clear. Tomorrow we should have a fine day with plenty | :10:32. | :10:37.
of sunshine. These weather fronts trying to get towards us but being | :10:37. | :10:42.
pushed away it to the north. Saturday will see some quite high | :10:42. | :10:48.
temperatures. This evening and overnight tonight, apart from a few | :10:48. | :10:53.
light showers, it becomes drive. By the end of the night, the skies | :10:53. | :10:59.
begin to clear. Overnight temperatures down to 11 degrees. | :10:59. | :11:04.
Tomorrow should be a fine day with plenty of sunshine. Sometimes that | :11:04. | :11:14.
sunshine a little bit hazy. The coastal waters forecast have those | :11:14. | :11:24.
