Good evening, and welcome to BBC Channel Islands. The top stories | :00:06. | :00:09.
this Thursday evening: The waiting's over as our students | :00:09. | :00:15.
celebrate their GCSE result success. Plus police investigating the St | :00:15. | :00:17.
Helier stabbings begin questioning their major suspect as tributes | :00:17. | :00:25.
continue to arrive for the victims. And the sun shone as the crowds | :00:25. | :00:35.
:00:35. | :00:46. | ||
were wowed by all that Guernsey's Today, after a long wait, thousands | :00:46. | :00:51.
of students received their GCSE results. In Jersey, the results | :00:51. | :00:55.
come months after some schools were rocked by claims they were under- | :00:55. | :00:59.
achieving. We will speak to Jersey's educational department in | :00:59. | :01:04.
a moment. First, Mike Wilkins reports on an important day for | :01:04. | :01:09.
students in Jersey and Guernsey. For some, these envelopes provoke a | :01:09. | :01:13.
flight response, with many heading off to their own corners to learn | :01:13. | :01:17.
of their academic fate. Others are happy to share the moment with | :01:17. | :01:26.
friends. You have to work for it, but as people get older,, actually, | :01:26. | :01:32.
they are easier, just because they felt they had to work harder. | :01:32. | :01:38.
got 13 A*s and one A, and he did not have to go far to find | :01:38. | :01:44.
headline-grabbing results. Us this pupil got 15 A*s, including GCSEs | :01:44. | :01:51.
in 15 -- five languages. I want to study medicine. Then I want to go | :01:51. | :01:55.
to a Third World country and be a missionary. But it was not just the | :01:55. | :01:59.
boys smiling for the cameras. There were plenty of top grades for the | :01:59. | :02:04.
girls. I will go to university and do a science degree, but I'm not | :02:04. | :02:10.
sure what I will do after that. have always wanted to do something | :02:10. | :02:15.
medical. Not a doctor unnecessarily, but along those lines. It has been | :02:15. | :02:21.
a good year for the Channel Islands. 75 % of the students achieved a | :02:21. | :02:26.
starchy C grades this year, and both Islands beat the UK figure. | :02:26. | :02:31.
Some did even better. Here at the convent school, pupils gained a 100 | :02:31. | :02:41.
% pass rate. I got four as, and five Bes. You never really know | :02:41. | :02:46.
until you come out of the exam. I'm just relieved. Meanwhile, down the | :02:46. | :02:52.
road at Haute Vallee, there were also smiles all round. I am very | :02:53. | :02:59.
happy with how I did. I am going on to do art, and I got an A*, so I am | :02:59. | :03:05.
quite happy. The smiles after what has been a turbulent year for the | :03:05. | :03:09.
state school along with others in Jersey. In February, it emerged | :03:09. | :03:16.
they performed worse that -- at GCSEs than almost all UK schools. | :03:16. | :03:20.
But for the head of this scale, he says he can now retire happy. | :03:20. | :03:25.
students are very pleased. Some were ecstatic. Some were quietly | :03:25. | :03:31.
pleased. But so far I have not seen any who were unhappy. So we have a | :03:31. | :03:35.
group of happy students. So the Channel Islands are still | :03:35. | :03:43.
outperforming the UK, and were now, Guernsey has the bragging rights. | :03:43. | :03:49.
Jim Westwater joins me in the studio now a. Mike was saying their | :03:49. | :03:53.
that this is the second year in a row that Guernsey has outperformed | :03:53. | :03:58.
Jersey. Is there any reason for this? They could be several reasons. | :03:58. | :04:02.
We would have to look at the relative funding issues in Guernsey, | :04:02. | :04:10.
and the structure of their education it is different. They | :04:10. | :04:18.
still do the 11 plus. It may be looking at a different structure. | :04:18. | :04:23.
You have had a controversial year in Jersey, with the Freedom of | :04:23. | :04:28.
Information query that revealed that four state schools were | :04:28. | :04:32.
performing worse at GCSE than most of the UK schools. How have we done | :04:32. | :04:42.
:04:42. | :04:43. | ||
the sheer? I would take a step back and say that the analysis on but is | :04:43. | :04:48.
not a good one. We would have to look at our system, and if we have | :04:48. | :04:53.
a very selective system, we will have different examination results. | :04:53. | :04:56.
It is a bit like comparing the viewing figures for two different | :04:56. | :05:03.
news programmes. But the structure favours one more than the other. | :05:03. | :05:07.
The UK has released its school results. We have not yet. Is it | :05:07. | :05:12.
because we want to focus on success rather than face criticism? | :05:12. | :05:16.
Today is about pupils and it is about their success and getting the | :05:17. | :05:21.
results out to them. What we want to do is make sure that we have | :05:21. | :05:26.
everything right before we publish them. It will take a few weeks. We | :05:26. | :05:31.
are a small department. But we do not want to be giving out results | :05:31. | :05:41.
today and changing them a week down the line. We have the outcomes to | :05:41. | :05:46.
consider and a lot of data to consider a. We need to celebrate | :05:46. | :05:51.
success today, as you say. Thank you. | :05:51. | :05:54.
So police are investigating the stabbing of six people in St Helier | :05:54. | :05:59.
are questioning a man they arrested last week. The 30-year-old was a | :05:59. | :06:03.
released from hospital yesterday when he was recovering from surgery. | :06:03. | :06:08.
One week after Jersey was shaken by six stabbings, the police are | :06:08. | :06:11.
questioning this man, Damian Rzeszowski, he was arrested last | :06:11. | :06:17.
week and has remained under guard in Jersey's General Hospital. Staff | :06:17. | :06:21.
here can now begin to rebuild after one of the island's biggest | :06:21. | :06:25.
emergencies. Those involved are being offered counselling after the | :06:25. | :06:30.
incident. It cost six people their lives, as today tributes continued | :06:30. | :06:35.
to be paid to one of the victims, Marta de la Haye. She worked for | :06:35. | :06:40.
the health service at St Saviour's hospital. Her colleagues talked | :06:40. | :06:45.
very longingly and lovingly offer, on what a good worker she was. And | :06:45. | :06:49.
highly respected by the staff. Not only the staff but patients and | :06:49. | :06:54.
families as well. As police question Damian Rzeszowski, a | :06:54. | :06:57.
Victoria Crescent Community Fund has been started for the families | :06:57. | :07:04.
of those who died. A man in Jersey has been charged | :07:04. | :07:07.
with causing death by dangerous driving after a fatal car crash | :07:08. | :07:13.
earlier this year. It happened on St Clement coast road in February. | :07:13. | :07:18.
Dita Paverniece, he was the passenger, was killed. The driver, | :07:18. | :07:23.
Niall Linden, appeared in Jersey's Magistrates' Court yesterday where | :07:23. | :07:29.
he reserved his plea. He will appear on October 5th. He was given | :07:29. | :07:32.
10,000 bail. Guernsey police say it could take | :07:32. | :07:35.
several weeks to establish the exact cause of death of a woman | :07:35. | :07:40.
whose body was found in a flat in St Peter Port at the weekend. A man | :07:40. | :07:45.
arrested in connection with the incident has been released without | :07:45. | :07:48.
charge. Detectives say it is a complex case with many lines of | :07:48. | :07:52.
inquiry. The number of people out of work | :07:52. | :07:56.
for more than one year is rising in Jersey, one in five people are | :07:56. | :08:04.
looking for a job. That compares to one in 61 month ago. The minister | :08:04. | :08:08.
who oversees industries in Jersey says that downturn has affected job | :08:08. | :08:13.
prospects. Crowds flocked to the North Show in | :08:13. | :08:17.
Guernsey today. The event is in its 89th year. | :08:17. | :08:23.
It was all smiles and sunshine this year. A far cry from last year's | :08:23. | :08:28.
Reine event. Last year it nearly sunk us. We had two very wet days | :08:28. | :08:32.
last year, we did not get the crowds or the income. We have had | :08:33. | :08:37.
to work this year it to get the income to pay for this one. And it | :08:37. | :08:43.
paid off. Everyone had their own reasons to come. It is fun, and | :08:43. | :08:50.
there is a lot to do. I like the rides. I like the little shows they | :08:50. | :08:58.
do in the big field in the middle. These birds are wide the crowd, and | :08:58. | :09:02.
inside the tense it was like the Chelsea Flower Show. Away from the | :09:02. | :09:07.
Sun, there was serious hard work going into the floats. Beth Gabriel | :09:07. | :09:11.
was battling to get her last-minute entry ready in time. We are the | :09:11. | :09:16.
only one in our class, but it is good just taking part. I love doing | :09:16. | :09:23.
it. Soon, it was time for the off. As Guernsey's floral floats took | :09:23. | :09:27.
centre stage, they did not disappoint. A colourful end to a | :09:27. | :09:33.
colourful day. We will have more pictures of the | :09:33. | :09:40.
We will have more pictures of the Let's take a look at the weather. | :09:40. | :09:44.
More showers to come across the Channel Islands for the next couple | :09:44. | :09:48.
of days. Some of them could be quite heavy weather Risk of Thunder. | :09:48. | :09:52.
They will continue into the start of the weekend, though Sunday and | :09:52. | :09:57.
Monday will be mainly dry. At the moment, we have an area of low | :09:57. | :10:01.
pressure, very complex this, with bands of cloud and showers rotating | :10:01. | :10:05.
around it. That will be with us for most of the night and most of | :10:05. | :10:09.
tomorrow before it begins to move out of the ways. Towards the end of | :10:09. | :10:15.
the day, the low-pressure moves away. Eventually, this area of high | :10:15. | :10:18.
pressure will start to come in, although it will take its time. | :10:18. | :10:22.
Still a risk of showers on Saturday, but they will have gone by Sunday | :10:22. | :10:27.
and it will be brighter and dry a. Overnight, one or two of the | :10:27. | :10:30.
showers could be heavy with the risk of thunder. And they will keep | :10:30. | :10:34.
going right through the night to come. Temperatures down to about 13 | :10:34. | :10:38.
degrees Celsius. Tomorrow, heavy showers in the morning although | :10:38. | :10:42.
they will die away from the South. Jersey will get the best of the | :10:42. | :10:49.
weather tomorrow. Further north, quite frequent showers coming into | :10:49. | :10:55.
Guernsey and Aldernay. Brisk westerly winds developing later in | :10:55. | :11:01.
the day as well. It will start off as a south-westerly and become a | :11:01. | :11:07.
westerly later. Visibility will be moderate or poor at sea. Here are | :11:07. | :11:17.
:11:17. | :11:24. | ||
Rather at choppy surface with that breeze. Two to three feet, on | :11:24. | :11:29.
Saturday, fewer showers, they will fade away into evening. Sunday and | :11:29. | :11:39.
:11:39. | :11:45. | ||
Monday will both be dry and a bit Finally, Beckie Herbert has been in | :11:45. | :11:49.
action again this evening in the semi-finals of the European | :11:49. | :11:52.
Championships against the Netherlands. At the moment, they | :11:52. | :11:58. |
