Good evening and welcome to BBC News in the Channel Islands. | :00:05. | :00:08.
Tonight's top stories: Charged with six murders - Damian | :00:08. | :00:12.
Rzeszowski appears at Jersey's Magistrates' Court. | :00:12. | :00:16.
Plus a second postmortem is held on Liga Verse, who died in suspicious | :00:16. | :00:21.
circumstances in Guernsey. And we have highlights from | :00:21. | :00:31.
:00:31. | :00:56. | ||
Guernsey's North Show Battle of A 30-year old man has been charged | :00:56. | :00:59.
with murdering six people including his wife and two children in Jersey. | :00:59. | :01:02.
Damian Rzeszowski appeared at a special sitting of the Royal Court | :01:02. | :01:05.
this afternoon, nearly two weeks after a crime which rocked a | :01:05. | :01:08.
community. Beckie Williams reports. This was the scene on the afternoon | :01:08. | :01:11.
of Sunday, 14th August. Six people were stabbed to death here in | :01:11. | :01:13.
Victoria Crescent, a quiet residential street in St Helier. | :01:13. | :01:16.
The oldest was 56, the youngest just two. Today this man, 30-year- | :01:16. | :01:19.
old Damian Rzeszowski, was charged with their murders. In the ten- | :01:19. | :01:21.
minute hearing here at the magistrates' court, Mr Rzeszowski | :01:21. | :01:24.
didn't speak. As the charges were read out through a Polish | :01:24. | :01:26.
translator, he stood in the dock flanked by two policemen, looking | :01:27. | :01:29.
pale and with his head bowed. Mr Rzeszowski's appearance here today | :01:29. | :01:32.
comes just 48 hours after his release from hospital where he'd | :01:32. | :01:34.
received treatment following the incident. Tonight he left court in | :01:35. | :01:37.
police custody, until his next appearance on 28th October at the | :01:37. | :01:45.
Royal Court. Tomorrow will be his 31st birthday. He'll spend it in | :01:45. | :01:53.
police custody. A second postmortem has been | :01:53. | :01:56.
carried out this morning on the body of a young woman in Guernsey | :01:56. | :01:59.
whose death remains unexplained. 24-year-old Liga Verse from Latvia | :01:59. | :02:02.
was found by police in a flat in St Peter Port in suspicious | :02:02. | :02:08.
circumstances. As the community comes to terms with the shocking | :02:08. | :02:12.
discovery, a special service is to be held this weekend in memory of | :02:12. | :02:18.
Liga. Mike Wilkins reports. After the shock of Liga's death, | :02:18. | :02:21.
the uncertainty of how she died continues, and now, a week later, | :02:21. | :02:31.
the community is reflecting on a young life cut short. It must be | :02:31. | :02:41.
:02:41. | :02:44. | ||
hard for her family to come here and see their daughter dead. I am | :02:44. | :02:48.
sure she would have gone back to Matt the one day. A special service | :02:49. | :02:52.
is being held at the town church on Sunday evening to remember Liga's | :02:52. | :02:54.
life. And the man who'll be addressing the congregation says | :02:54. | :03:02.
it'll be a good opportunity to support others in need. Events like | :03:02. | :03:05.
this do draw communities together. People feel that they want to | :03:05. | :03:11.
support other people who are in deep sadness, and particularly we | :03:11. | :03:15.
hope that at this service there will be some support for Liga's | :03:15. | :03:19.
family, as we understand it at the moment, they would like to | :03:19. | :03:26.
repatriate her body for burial in Latvia. And if that is the case, | :03:26. | :03:30.
then it will be a very expensive operation to return the body to | :03:30. | :03:34.
that fear. It's still unclear how Liga died. A 27-year-old local man | :03:34. | :03:38.
who was questioned by the police has been released on bail. But as | :03:38. | :03:42.
the investigations continue, so do the prayers. Liga may be gone but | :03:42. | :03:50.
her memory lives on. New technology in Guernsey means | :03:50. | :03:52.
drugs containing potentially lethal chemicals can be more quickly | :03:52. | :03:58.
identified. A new machine has only been in the island a month and it's | :03:58. | :04:01.
already had a find. Emma Thomas reports. | :04:01. | :04:04.
On our streets, this cocaine seized in Guernsey has a bit more than | :04:04. | :04:09.
users bargained for - a lethal compound. Drugs brought to this lab | :04:09. | :04:12.
recently were found to be laced with a substance used to worm | :04:12. | :04:16.
animals. The machine behind me picked up that the cocaine was | :04:16. | :04:19.
laced with levamisole, a toxic chemical that can affect the immune | :04:19. | :04:24.
system with potentially lethal consequences. We can actually | :04:24. | :04:26.
detect small amounts or large amounts of these impurities, and we | :04:27. | :04:30.
do check them. It's important for public health that we are aware | :04:30. | :04:34.
what's in the drugs circulating in the island. The detection has | :04:34. | :04:36.
allowed Guernsey's Health Department to send out a warning to | :04:36. | :04:42.
drug users in the island. People have died from it, particularly in | :04:42. | :04:46.
the USA. It is a drug that is potentially toxic. It can knock | :04:46. | :04:51.
your bone marrow, stop it working and that can lead to death. This | :04:51. | :04:53.
equipment will mean courts have access to even more reliable | :04:53. | :05:00.
information about the dangers drugs pose. | :05:00. | :05:02.
Jersey's former Health Minister Senator Ben Shenton has announced | :05:02. | :05:06.
he won't be running for re-election in October. Senator Shenton says | :05:06. | :05:08.
he's become increasingly frustrated with ministerial government and | :05:08. | :05:11.
what he calls overpaid Deputies who waste time and speak at length on | :05:11. | :05:17.
every subject in the States. He was first sworn in as a Senator in 2005, | :05:17. | :05:20.
and despite standing down for now, he hasn't ruled out returning to | :05:20. | :05:26.
politics in the future. It's hoped the Red Arrows will | :05:26. | :05:30.
perform at Jersey and Guernsey's air shows next month. Hawk T1 | :05:30. | :05:33.
aircraft have been given clearance by the Ministry of Defence to | :05:33. | :05:36.
resume flying. They were grounded last week after a 33-year-old pilot | :05:36. | :05:40.
died following a display in Bournemouth. Organisers in both | :05:40. | :05:43.
islands say a full show will still go ahead with or without them, but | :05:43. | :05:46.
if they do perform, they will pay tribute to Flight Lieutenant Jon | :05:46. | :05:52.
Egging. You're watching the BBC in the | :05:52. | :05:56.
Channel Islands. Later in Spotlight with Justin and Natalie: A very | :05:56. | :05:59.
special first day at school is coming up for this miracle boy who | :05:59. | :06:09.
:06:09. | :06:09. | ||
And it's Friday so time for our "free Friday" feature, when we | :06:09. | :06:12.
showcase things to do in the islands that are either free or | :06:12. | :06:15.
cost very little. Our reporter Beckie Williams went to see some | :06:15. | :06:18.
musicians warming up for an epic performance in 12 pubs across the | :06:18. | :06:28.
:06:28. | :06:53. | ||
Just a taster of music from one local band. If you want to hear | :06:54. | :06:58.
more of this, you can. This is just one band performing in pubs across | :06:58. | :07:03.
Josie this weekend. Why did you come up with the idea? I just | :07:03. | :07:07.
finished playing a gig with Andy and I thought I would like to play | :07:07. | :07:11.
a gig in every pub in Jersey one day. I thought about the logistics | :07:11. | :07:16.
of this, getting from one pub to another would be quite a hassle, so | :07:16. | :07:22.
I decided to have 12 acts doing it and the bans could move around. | :07:22. | :07:28.
Andy suggested we would do it for a charity, so we thought help a Josie | :07:28. | :07:32.
child is a local charity. There will be but it's available but | :07:32. | :07:37.
entry will be free. This gives performers a chance for more | :07:37. | :07:42.
exposure. Chris is one of those. You have a strange instrument here. | :07:42. | :07:47.
I hope people will appreciate seeing this out and about. It is | :07:47. | :07:54.
something I bought in London, only one of 12 in existence. Rival take | :07:54. | :07:59.
it out to see what people think of it. Is it hard to play? It is very | :07:59. | :08:03.
hard to play but it is a lot of fun and catches people's attention. | :08:03. | :08:06.
if you want to see this and plenty of other performers and their | :08:06. | :08:11.
instruments, come to pubs across Josie this weekend from 11am on | :08:11. | :08:15.
Sunday. The Battle of Flowers was held | :08:15. | :08:17.
yesterday in Guernsey and the community made such an effort that | :08:17. | :08:21.
we thought we'd show you some highlights to set you up for the | :08:21. | :08:31.
:08:31. | :08:31. | ||
Apology for the loss of subtitles for 76 seconds | :08:31. | :09:47.
Now here is a weekend weather with Good evening. We're fat some | :09:47. | :09:51.
sunshine across the Channel Islands today. Tomorrow, more of the same | :09:51. | :09:56.
but the risk of showers. It is still low pressure. We are between | :09:56. | :09:59.
weather systems this evening was stop the tail end of this line of | :09:59. | :10:02.
shares could clip was later on tonight. The low-pressure beginning | :10:02. | :10:07.
to move away from us by midday tomorrow. The weekend improves. | :10:07. | :10:11.
Through Saturday there is the risk of a sham. On Sunday, the risk is | :10:11. | :10:16.
much reduced as the area of high pressure moves across the eye lens. | :10:16. | :10:19.
Bringing the sunshine back out. It will probably last until the early | :10:19. | :10:24.
part of next week. Overnight, the risk of a few showers can most of | :10:25. | :10:31.
which will fade away overnight. A few isolated light showers by dawn. | :10:31. | :10:34.
Tomorrow, we can expect those showers perhaps more widespread and | :10:34. | :10:38.
frequent and we have seen today. But by the afternoon, they become | :10:38. | :10:42.
very isolated. The second half of the day becomes mainly dry apart | :10:42. | :10:47.
from one or two of their showers. Winds from the north-west and 17 | :10:47. | :10:57.
:10:57. | :11:20. | ||
and 18 degrees the highest The forecast all the way through, | :11:20. | :11:23.
including the start of next week, is much improved. I think on Sunday | :11:23. | :11:28.
we will have sunny spells, patchy cloud. At times quite a lot of | :11:28. | :11:33.
cloud, but we will see temperatures rise was that much Writer wins for | :11:33. | :11:36.
Monday and Tuesday. Quite a lot of cloud around but relatively dry and | :11:36. | :11:45.
There's a mouth-watering opening match for Channel Island tennis | :11:45. | :11:48. |
