Good evening. Tonight on BBC Channel Islands, a victory for

:00:05.:00:09.

teachers but a headache for schools - an urgent appeal for public help

:00:09.:00:15.

to supervise children. Plus, we'll see our young sports

:00:15.:00:20.

stars on medal-winning form watched by an Olympic legend.

:00:20.:00:24.

My name is Keith Pike. If you want to find out why I'm dressed like

:00:24.:00:34.
:00:34.:00:40.

this, you'll find out later in the From the New Year, teachers in

:00:40.:00:42.

Jersey won't have to supervise lunch breaks in primary and

:00:42.:00:46.

secondary schools. The agreement was reached after a teachers'

:00:46.:00:50.

strike last year, but it does leave schools with a problem. Who will

:00:50.:00:53.

look after children during the school lunch hour? The Education

:00:53.:00:56.

Department is hoping members of the public will step in, as Anisha Shah

:00:56.:01:04.

reports. The lunch call, a sound of joy for

:01:04.:01:07.

children, but for many teachers it means more work and certainly no

:01:07.:01:17.
:01:17.:01:20.

time to take a break. You must have a break. Unless it is only -- the

:01:20.:01:25.

only part of the school live you were doing. But if you are working

:01:25.:01:28.

in school as well, yes, you should have half an hour at least and

:01:28.:01:36.

chill out. To make that possible, from January every school in Jersey

:01:36.:01:46.
:01:46.:01:46.

will have a dedicated team of lost and supervisors. -- lunchtime.

:01:46.:01:53.

hope some of the staff will opt in to doing lunchtime duties. I will

:01:53.:01:59.

invite them, those who wish to do some cover at lunchtime, to do so,

:01:59.:02:05.

which the agreement allows for. that's an option unions are

:02:06.:02:12.

advising against. I know some teachers are being offered extra

:02:12.:02:18.

payment to do these duties. The union feels they are welcome to do

:02:18.:02:23.

that if they want to do it. By the New Year, around 40 new lunchtime

:02:23.:02:26.

staff need to be recruited to give teachers the chance to take their

:02:26.:02:36.
:02:36.:02:40.

break. We are expecting internal staff to come forward. We're

:02:40.:02:45.

changing the terms and conditions of teachers to currently trap --

:02:45.:02:49.

career at lunchtime supervision. This brings them in line with UK

:02:49.:02:55.

terms and conditions for teachers. Being given the choice looks set to

:02:55.:03:04.

be given top marks with teachers. A man who received head injuries in

:03:04.:03:07.

an alleged assault in Jersey at the weekend, is unconscious but stable

:03:07.:03:09.

in Southampton Hospital. He and another man were trying to flag

:03:09.:03:13.

down a taxi at the junction of Plat Douet Road and St Clements Inner

:03:13.:03:16.

Road early on Sunday morning, when the police say they were assaulted

:03:16.:03:20.

by three other young men. They want to speak to anyone who was in the

:03:20.:03:22.

area at the time. Guernsey's telephone museum closed

:03:22.:03:26.

its doors for the final time yesterday. This was the scene as

:03:26.:03:29.

islanders and holidaymakers called in for the last time. The facility

:03:29.:03:31.

had suffered from low visitor numbers, and saw taxpayers

:03:31.:03:35.

subsidising the museum at a cost of around 10 per visitor. The States

:03:35.:03:38.

of Guernsey will be keeping hold of the collection from Hermes House, a

:03:38.:03:42.

former telephone exchange in the Castel.

:03:42.:03:45.

Guernsey may be used to cruise ships, but this is the scene many

:03:45.:03:48.

woke up to yesterday morning. The Queen Elizabeth cruise liner was in

:03:48.:03:52.

the island. The vessel is one of the largest to visit this season,

:03:52.:03:56.

and can hold more than 2,000 passengers.

:03:56.:03:58.

Athletes from Jersey and Guernsey have been competing in the

:03:58.:04:03.

Commonwealth Youth Games in the Isle of Man this weekend. They were

:04:03.:04:06.

among competitors from over 60 nations on the island to compete in

:04:06.:04:11.

seven different sports. And while Jersey managed to bag a place on

:04:11.:04:14.

the medals board, Guernsey was just pleased with a number of personal

:04:14.:04:18.

bests and finalists. Amy Harris reports.

:04:18.:04:21.

It's the smallest nation ever to host the Commonwealth Youth Games,

:04:21.:04:28.

but the Isle of Man pulled out all the stops. Athletes from Guernsey

:04:28.:04:38.
:04:38.:04:41.

and Jersey were among teams from 60 countries. From Jersey, we have a

:04:41.:04:49.

team from a country whose athletic prowess is legendary. On hand for

:04:49.:04:56.

inspiration was Dame Kelly Holmes. When I was 16 years old, I went to

:04:56.:05:00.

a games called the Mini Youth Olympics. I remember marching

:05:00.:05:06.

around in the opening ceremony. I have one of the 800 metres gold. I

:05:06.:05:10.

remember standing on the rostrum thinking, one day this will be real

:05:10.:05:20.
:05:20.:05:23.

when I am Olga. -- older. Jersey athletes got personal bests, one in

:05:23.:05:30.

the shot putt. There have been a lot of good throwers coming out of

:05:30.:05:35.

Jersey in recent years. And on Team Guernsey, while there were no

:05:35.:05:38.

medals won, the athletes shone against some of the world's rising

:05:38.:05:41.

stars in swimming, cycling, athletics and badminton. Island

:05:41.:05:44.

records were broken, and many finished in the top 10 in their

:05:44.:05:47.

events - like 18-year-old Josh Lewis here in the 200 metre

:05:47.:05:57.
:05:57.:05:59.

breaststroke final. Overall, if not all of our team, has managed to

:05:59.:06:06.

gain a top 20 place. More than half managed top 10. That is an amazing

:06:06.:06:10.

achievement for such a small island. Tonight it's the closing ceremony,

:06:10.:06:13.

a chance for all our athletes to celebrate what has been a very

:06:14.:06:17.

successful commonwealth games. You're watching the BBC in the

:06:17.:06:20.

Channel Islands. Later in Spotlight with Simon and Victoria, how a

:06:20.:06:30.
:06:30.:06:32.

sinking ship could revive one Jersey's Multiple Sclerosis Therapy

:06:32.:06:35.

Centre is getting a makeover as part of this year's Construction

:06:35.:06:38.

Week. The Construction Council is helping refurbish the building in

:06:38.:06:44.

just five days. New carpets, lights, kitchen and a fresh lick of paint

:06:44.:06:52.

are all helping make the centre more welcoming.

:06:52.:06:57.

It is a case of establishing who we are, putting ourselves back on the

:06:57.:07:04.

map. We would like to see more people with multiple sclerosis

:07:04.:07:08.

coming to visit us. Talk about things relating to multiple

:07:09.:07:14.

sclerosis, and that includes family members as well. Next to a step

:07:14.:07:18.

back in the time for the boys in blue. One history enthusiast in

:07:18.:07:21.

Guernsey has been so taken up with the history of Guernsey police,

:07:21.:07:24.

he's had a replica of the 19th Century uniform made for him. Keith

:07:24.:07:27.

Pike has also spent five years transcribing word for word decades

:07:27.:07:30.

of log books. Edward Sault went to meet him.

:07:30.:07:33.

No, your eyes aren't deceiving you. This is a replica of a uniform that

:07:33.:07:36.

would have been seen around St Peter Port - the uniform of an

:07:36.:07:46.
:07:46.:07:50.

assistant constable from the late 1880s and early 1900s. Those are

:07:50.:07:59.

original and cops. -- handcuffs. I think in material would have been

:08:00.:08:07.

thicker. What we will get there in the end. Do you almost feel like a

:08:07.:08:12.

different person when you put it on? Yes and No. I like to have a

:08:12.:08:18.

joke with people. Keith has transcribed island's police

:08:18.:08:27.

occurrence reports from 1850 to 1920. Has this shock you? He has in

:08:27.:08:36.

some cases. I am seeing the island from a different angle. N this

:08:36.:08:39.

picture, officers of the day. And here, a form of punishment for

:08:39.:08:42.

those found guilty of some crimes. They were made to walk a treadmill,

:08:42.:08:47.

and if one person stopped, everyone else would fall off. One woman

:08:47.:08:52.

found out that her great grandfather received the perch. --

:08:52.:09:00.

Berdych. It was an absolute shock. There is no finish to this. It will

:09:00.:09:05.

go on and on. Keith hopes to one day write a book with everything

:09:05.:09:08.

he's found. His choice of costume has certainly caught the eye, but

:09:08.:09:12.

he hopes that these memories will live on and not locked up.

:09:12.:09:15.

And you can hear more from Keith on BBC Guernsey tomorrow morning.

:09:15.:09:19.

He'll be telling Kevin Stewart about the horse and cart used as a

:09:19.:09:22.

getaway car, and talking more about the books you saw in Edward's

:09:22.:09:32.
:09:32.:09:32.

report. That's from 9.30. We have escaped the worst of the

:09:32.:09:37.

We have escaped the worst of the winds today. What about tomorrow?

:09:37.:09:41.

After a very blustery day today, the weather is coming down during

:09:41.:09:49.

the week ahead. Still a little Rhys. Throughout the day tomorrow we will

:09:49.:09:56.

see some showers. Some sunshine. On Wednesday we will see a bridge of

:09:57.:10:02.

high pressure from the West. The weather does settle down. For

:10:02.:10:10.

tonight, generally cloudy. Showers being blown in on a fairly brisk

:10:10.:10:20.
:10:20.:10:22.

breeze. A mild night. Showers and from first thing tomorrow morning.

:10:22.:10:28.

-- around. Bright and sunny throughout the day. Good amounts of

:10:28.:10:38.

sunshine to be found later tomorrow. A moderate breeze. The coastal

:10:38.:10:48.
:10:48.:11:08.

Still pretty choppy sir. -- surfing. For the rest of the week, after

:11:08.:11:14.

tomorrow's showers, it is looking try on Wednesday and Thursday. --

:11:14.:11:23.
