Good evening. Welcome to BBC Our headlines this Wednesday | :00:07. | :00:11.
evening: More workers and more jobless. We | :00:11. | :00:14.
examine the contradiction in Jersey's record new job figures. | :00:14. | :00:16.
Also tonight: It is isolated and idyllic, now | :00:16. | :00:20.
Sark is making it easier to get married there. | :00:20. | :00:28.
And a heartbreaking goodbye. I have to do the sensible thing and | :00:28. | :00:32.
let the school take on a new journey, while I take on a new | :00:32. | :00:35.
journey in life as well. The much-loved head teacher leaving | :00:35. | :00:45.
:00:45. | :00:50. | ||
The number of people working in Jersey is at its highest level on | :00:50. | :00:54.
record. The figure comes from a report into Jersey's labour market | :00:54. | :00:57.
in June. That same report, however, shows that unemployment rates have | :00:57. | :01:04.
not dropped. So do the numbers add up? Amy Harris reports. | :01:04. | :01:08.
Settling into his new job. Carl Jenkins was taken on by one of | :01:08. | :01:10.
Jersey's biggest finance firms earlier this year, during a time | :01:10. | :01:19.
employment in the industry was finally picking up. | :01:19. | :01:27.
I feel really lucky to get this job. It is my first proper job. It is | :01:27. | :01:30.
like my career now because I want to stay here long term. | :01:30. | :01:33.
Like Carl, there were 50 more workers employed by the finance | :01:33. | :01:36.
industry between June this year and last, the first increase for over | :01:36. | :01:39.
two years. Finance, though, is not the only sector recording a rise in | :01:39. | :01:43.
employment. Government figures show over 56,500 were in work in June | :01:43. | :01:49.
this year. That is over 700 people more than last year. It is the | :01:49. | :01:52.
first annual increase in employment since 2008 and the highest level | :01:52. | :02:02.
:02:02. | :02:07. | ||
since records began 15 years ago. I declare the first Waitrose in | :02:07. | :02:10.
Jersey Open. It is thought much of the increase | :02:10. | :02:13.
is due to the arrival of Waitrose and other supermarkets but the | :02:13. | :02:15.
Government says record employment levels are not necessarily down to | :02:15. | :02:21.
Jersey's rising population, or a sign the economy has recovered. | :02:21. | :02:26.
A lot of challenges face the economy as we move forward. It is a | :02:26. | :02:31.
good indicator, along with a number of other factors. Unemployment | :02:31. | :02:35.
numbers are still as an unaccompanied -- an uncomfortably | :02:35. | :02:38.
high level. It is thought more jobless and more | :02:38. | :02:40.
workers are due to several reasons, including people re-entering the | :02:40. | :02:42.
jobs market who were not registered as unemployed. | :02:42. | :02:45.
For Carl, unemployment is no longer a concern. A government scheme | :02:45. | :02:48.
helped him into his job and is now targeting its policies to help | :02:48. | :02:54.
A Jersey-bound passenger plane narrowly avoided colliding with a | :02:54. | :02:57.
much larger aircraft that was taking off from Zurich Airport last | :02:57. | :03:01.
year. The Blue Islands aeroplane, like this one, started to take off | :03:01. | :03:04.
without clearance at the same time as a Thai Airways Airbus which was | :03:04. | :03:08.
on a different runway. The potential collision was spotted by | :03:08. | :03:16.
another pilot who warned air- traffic controllers. | :03:16. | :03:19.
A 25-year-old man has been jailed for five years after robbing a | :03:19. | :03:22.
betting shop. David Rousseau held up this branch of Ladbrokes in St | :03:22. | :03:25.
Helier. It happened in April of this year, when Rousseau burst into | :03:25. | :03:27.
the shop. The resignation of Guernsey's | :03:27. | :03:30.
education minister could be considered by the States as soon as | :03:30. | :03:32.
next Tuesday. Senior politicians have agreed that a review of | :03:32. | :03:35.
education services should take place after a decline in the GCSE | :03:35. | :03:39.
pass rate at the island's three high schools. Four of the political | :03:39. | :03:41.
members of education, including the minister Deputy Carol Steer, have | :03:41. | :03:51.
:03:51. | :03:54. | ||
offered to resign. If you wanted to get married in the | :03:54. | :03:56.
Channel Islands, you would be spoilt for choice of idyllic venues | :03:56. | :03:59.
but for sheer isolation and exclusivity you cannot beat the | :03:59. | :04:02.
tiny island of Sark. Your choices there would be pretty limited | :04:02. | :04:12.
:04:12. | :04:16. | ||
though, until now. Whether it be the picturesque lanes, | :04:16. | :04:19.
the relaxed way of life, or the natural beauty of Sark, the island | :04:19. | :04:22.
has been attracting couples to get married here for years. But Chief | :04:22. | :04:25.
Pleas agreed here today to look at changing the rules to encourage | :04:25. | :04:32.
more people to do it. We want to attract more people to | :04:32. | :04:36.
the island to get married. We have lots of things to attract people. | :04:36. | :04:40.
There are lovely hotels, menus and scenery. | :04:40. | :04:43.
The island's churches are an obvious choice of venue for many | :04:43. | :04:46.
couples. But Chief Pleas is keen to open up | :04:46. | :04:48.
other options, such as outdoor venues and hotels, and has changed | :04:48. | :04:52.
the rules so visitors do not have to spend so long in the island | :04:52. | :05:01.
before their big day. For those involved in the industry it is | :05:01. | :05:07.
welcome news for the island as a whole. | :05:07. | :05:16.
It can bring a lot of people to the Sark. Destination weddings, going | :05:16. | :05:21.
somewhere to get married, are big business these days. Many couples | :05:21. | :05:25.
spend more on getting married than they would on an ordinary holiday. | :05:25. | :05:29.
Sark may be winding down for the winter season but work will not be | :05:29. | :05:31.
stopping to look at ways of ensuring the island's wedding | :05:31. | :05:38.
season is a real success. They have defended Guernsey's | :05:39. | :05:42.
shores for centuries and now some of the island's lookout towers are | :05:42. | :05:45.
getting a facelift. The tower at Petit Bot is being renovated in | :05:45. | :05:48.
time for next June to coincide with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. Mike | :05:48. | :05:55.
Wilkins went for a look around. Hundreds of years ago, the threat | :05:55. | :06:01.
of a French invasion was very real. This one is undergoing not just | :06:01. | :06:05.
general maintenance but having a complete makeover. Let us find out | :06:05. | :06:12.
why. Right, well, here we are, quite | :06:12. | :06:16.
literally at the top of the tower with some great use. You can see | :06:16. | :06:22.
how it kept the French at their! With me is the woman behind his | :06:22. | :06:26.
development from the Guernsey Museums Service. What has prompted | :06:26. | :06:30.
all of this? It is part of our conservation | :06:31. | :06:36.
programme for this year. We have done worked previously on other | :06:36. | :06:39.
towers. This is the next one it in line. | :06:39. | :06:43.
How much does this cast? It can be expensive because we do | :06:43. | :06:48.
not know what we will find when we get to the top of the tower. It all | :06:48. | :06:53.
comes out of the annual budget we are allocated. I feel these are | :06:53. | :06:57.
important to the history of the island and local people. Their | :06:57. | :07:04.
unique to Guernsey. Only 15 were built in the late 18th century. | :07:04. | :07:07.
One has lifelike for people in these towers? | :07:07. | :07:12.
I believe around 20 militia were based here, under a commander. I | :07:12. | :07:17.
imagine it would have been quite cold, although a chimney and | :07:17. | :07:22.
fireplace were put in later. They had to keep watch constantly for | :07:22. | :07:26.
threats coming over the horizon. 20 rain much indeed. This tower has | :07:26. | :07:33.
been around for more than 220 years. I think it will be around for a | :07:34. | :07:38.
little longer. He recently won an award for his | :07:38. | :07:42.
work but now the head teacher of Le Roquier School is leaving. Richard | :07:42. | :07:45.
Rolfe has decided to leave his post at the secondary school after | :07:45. | :07:47.
having treatment for cancer, which he was diagnosed with earlier this | :07:47. | :07:50.
year. His decision has not only shocked his staff but also his | :07:50. | :07:52.
students. He has seen hundreds of children | :07:52. | :07:55.
learn and progress through Le Rocquier School during his nine | :07:55. | :08:00.
years as head teacher but now it is time for him to move on. | :08:00. | :08:03.
Richard Rolfe was diagnosed with bowel cancer last night but even | :08:03. | :08:06.
though he is on the mend after treatment and back in the classroom, | :08:06. | :08:16.
:08:16. | :08:19. | ||
he has decided it is time to leave. -- last May. | :08:19. | :08:23.
I find it very hard to leave this great organisation, especially | :08:23. | :08:28.
being relatively young. If I do not leave I will not have a brighter | :08:28. | :08:32.
future later so I need to it in best that time. | :08:32. | :08:36.
He has not only won awards for his work hear as head teacher but he | :08:36. | :08:43.
has also won over his students, who say he will be sorely missed. | :08:43. | :08:48.
He has done so much for us. It is dreadful he is leaving. | :08:48. | :08:53.
I was very upset at first. I feel is a great head teacher and I was | :08:53. | :08:57.
that they would not be here for the rest of our school year. | :08:57. | :09:01.
We are all understand why he had to leave. I feel it is a good decision | :09:01. | :09:05.
for him personally but he will be greatly missed. | :09:05. | :09:10.
If I do not feel 100%, I cannot deliver very well for you. | :09:10. | :09:13.
Richard Rolfe for has been very open about his illness with the | :09:13. | :09:18.
students as he says there is a lesson in every experience. | :09:18. | :09:23.
I feel it is best to be honest with people and openly share what is | :09:23. | :09:26.
happening so that they can reflect on that and learn from that | :09:26. | :09:31.
experience. Later in life, maybe they will remember that I went for | :09:31. | :09:37.
I health check even though I was well and got a diet -- 80 disease | :09:37. | :09:40.
diagnosed and caught in time. Richard leaves Le Roquier School at | :09:40. | :09:44.
the end of this month. He says he will miss the job he loves but he | :09:44. | :09:54.
:09:54. | :09:56. | ||
Good evening. Some wet weather heading our way this evening and | :09:56. | :10:02.
overnight but it will be replaced by showers and sunshine and kulak | :10:02. | :10:10.
air. You will notice the shop in the temperatures tomorrow. Quite | :10:10. | :10:15.
strong winds ahead of this front as it moves through the islands. The | :10:15. | :10:18.
winners will change direction, becoming north-westerly through the | :10:18. | :10:27.
day tomorrow. The shower whisk will reduce ban is time we get to Friday. | :10:27. | :10:37.
:10:37. | :10:39. | ||
Overnight temperatures will be down to 13 or 14 degrees. Quite windy | :10:39. | :10:42.
conditions at a time but they will swing north-westerly as the front | :10:42. | :10:47.
moves through. Samara there or be brightness, a bit of sunshine, but | :10:47. | :10:53.
also one or two showers. It will calmly feel colder because of that | :10:53. | :11:01.
brisk wind. 16 degrees Celsius. Here is beat Marine forecast. | :11:01. | :11:10.
Showers with mainly good visibility. Here are the high water times. For | :11:10. | :11:16.
our surfing conditions, probably quite messy for most of the beaches. | :11:16. | :11:23.
It could be up to four feet. The forecast for Friday is much | :11:23. | :11:31.
brighter. There may be one or two like showers. We should get some | :11:31. | :11:34.
sunshine by the end of the day on Friday but still a brisk breeze | :11:34. | :11:39.
which would ease into the weekend. On Saturday and Sunday there will | :11:39. | :11:42. |
