Good evening and welcome. Noisy, intimidating and needs | :00:13. | :00:16.
policing - why children are too scared to play in Jersey's new | :00:16. | :00:26.
:00:26. | :00:29. | ||
community park. Honoured for serving Queen and | :00:29. | :00:31.
country - Guernsey thanks its World War Two veterans. | :00:31. | :00:34.
And a prickly problem - what will happen to sick and injured | :00:34. | :00:44.
:00:44. | :00:45. | ||
hedgehogs now their sanctuary is Jersey's new Town Park is to be | :00:45. | :00:47.
monitored after claims that young children are being bullied by | :00:47. | :00:52.
teenagers. It comes as separate complaints have been made about | :00:52. | :00:55.
noise and young people gathering there. All this just two weeks | :00:55. | :01:03.
after the park opened. Amy Harris reports. It is the new jewel in St | :01:03. | :01:06.
Helier's crown, but there is concern that Jersey's Millennium | :01:06. | :01:11.
Town Park is being blighted by anti-social behaviour. It has only | :01:11. | :01:14.
been open for two weeks, but already authorities have had to | :01:14. | :01:16.
paint over graffiti on play equipment and there have been | :01:17. | :01:19.
reports that younger children are too scared to play here because | :01:19. | :01:29.
:01:29. | :01:30. | ||
they are being bullied and intimidated by teenagers. I try to | :01:30. | :01:34.
come on Saturday with my little one, but it was jam-packed full of | :01:34. | :01:39.
teenagers. You could see the younger ones were scared, standing | :01:39. | :01:43.
to decide waiting to get on the equipment. I didn't bring her reign | :01:43. | :01:49.
because it was too crowded full of all decades. When I have walked | :01:49. | :01:56.
past, I have seen teenagers hanging about. You can see younger children | :01:56. | :01:58.
getting insecure and nervous about that. Many parents have posted | :01:59. | :02:01.
their worries on this Facebook site and two 10-year-olds have even | :02:01. | :02:04.
written to the town constable. There are now calls for the area to | :02:05. | :02:12.
be better policed. I would like park marshals to be put there, or a | :02:12. | :02:18.
police presence to to tear any billion DEC goes on. If we allow | :02:18. | :02:23.
our youngsters to be believed, that will go through to their schooling | :02:23. | :02:30.
and the workplace. There have also been separate complaints about | :02:30. | :02:32.
skateboarders gathering in this area of the park. This footage | :02:32. | :02:35.
posted on the internet shows a skateboarder being chased off the | :02:35. | :02:41.
site by the honorary police. Now town bosses say the park will be | :02:41. | :02:51.
:02:51. | :02:54. | ||
monitored. We are already in discussion with a number of | :02:54. | :03:01.
different agencies that will I am sure make sure in the short term to | :03:01. | :03:05.
make sure that the park is monitored, that it works and does | :03:05. | :03:08.
not give bad memories any children. Youth workers believe it is | :03:08. | :03:10.
inevitable that a busy park will experience friction between | :03:10. | :03:13.
children, but for park bosses these complaints will be far from the | :03:13. | :03:19.
start they wanted. A 27-year-old man has been | :03:19. | :03:22.
discharged from police bail in connection with the death of Liga | :03:22. | :03:25.
Verse. Guernsey police say it is as a result of reports from expert | :03:25. | :03:28.
witnesses, but they say they are making good progress with their | :03:28. | :03:31.
investigation. The 24-year-old Latvian was found dead in a flat in | :03:31. | :03:38.
Guernsey in August. Guernsey's longest-serving | :03:38. | :03:41.
politician is blaming the Policy Council for a lack of progress in | :03:41. | :03:45.
the States. Deputy Ivan Rihoy believes much of the problem is | :03:45. | :03:49.
down to how senior people are chosen. His committee is | :03:49. | :03:51.
recommending a move towards the system adopted by Jersey which | :03:52. | :03:57.
involves questioning candidates after their speeches. He thinks the | :03:57. | :04:00.
Policy Council is too big and the Chief Minister needs more executive | :04:00. | :04:10.
:04:10. | :04:11. | ||
power. The thing is, they don't give enough guidance. We are not | :04:11. | :04:14.
getting our policies through. Things are not happening as they | :04:14. | :04:18.
should happen and it is costing the taxpayer a lot of money. Certain | :04:19. | :04:23.
things are being done that perhaps should not be being done, and | :04:23. | :04:28.
things that should be are not been done. What we have to make sure off | :04:28. | :04:31.
after the next election is that we get the right people in the right | :04:31. | :04:34.
jobs. In Guernsey a group of former | :04:34. | :04:36.
military servicemen have been honoured today at Government House. | :04:37. | :04:39.
Five former armed service personnel were awarded the Armed Forces | :04:39. | :04:44.
Veterans Badge at a special ceremony. Mike Wilkins was there. | :04:44. | :04:53.
Honoured today for serving their Queen and country. Thank you very | :04:53. | :04:58.
much. And I meant what I said, keep in touch. But, like many old | :04:58. | :05:03.
soldiers, modesty is the order of the day for these men. I don't | :05:03. | :05:10.
really deserve it. I am an infant in terms of service in regard to | :05:10. | :05:15.
other people and what they had done. It is unexpected, but I'm very | :05:15. | :05:19.
proud. An important part of these ceremonies is to let any former | :05:19. | :05:25.
service personnel know that help is always at hand. One of the things | :05:25. | :05:31.
to come out this lunchtime is that a very elderly gentleman here, now | :05:31. | :05:37.
in a wheelchair and in a hospital, one of our recipients today | :05:37. | :05:41.
mentioned him to me. He is not known to most of the people on the | :05:41. | :05:46.
island for his wartime service, but now we can get in touch with him | :05:46. | :05:51.
and bring him back into the family and if he has any needs, we will be | :05:51. | :05:55.
able to help them through the welfare organisations we have. | :05:55. | :06:00.
is important that civilians like myself to remember that we show | :06:00. | :06:03.
that we care and appreciates all that they have done. Some of these | :06:03. | :06:06.
men may not feel they deserve an award, but here today it was the | :06:06. | :06:12.
island that paid tribute. You are watching the BBC in the | :06:12. | :06:14.
Channel Islands. Later in Spotlight with Justin and Victoria, find out | :06:14. | :06:18.
what's got eight legs and rides a mean wave and has thousands of | :06:18. | :06:28.

The parents of a Olivia Jordan Higgins thought it would be a great | :06:30. | :06:33.
idea if she spent a week of her summer holidays having a go at golf | :06:33. | :06:37.
at a local driving range. She was 13 and had never hit a ball before, | :06:37. | :06:41.
but she was pretty good. So good in fact 10 years later she turned | :06:41. | :06:43.
professional and has just completed her first year on the American | :06:43. | :06:52.
women's Future Tour. Edward Sault takes up the story. | :06:52. | :06:57.
Driving off on familiar shores. This is Royal Jersey, where Olivia | :06:57. | :07:06.
grew up, but it is in America that she is making her name. I went with | :07:06. | :07:13.
no expectations, really. I finished 40th on the money list out of 200 | :07:13. | :07:18.
people, which I am really pleased with. I think I can only get better | :07:18. | :07:21.
from here. Playing in America offers more opportunities than | :07:21. | :07:24.
playing in Europe, but life as a tour professional is not easy. | :07:24. | :07:26.
Olivia stays with local families and drives the huge distances | :07:26. | :07:30.
between events to keep her costs down. She only has her winnings to | :07:30. | :07:40.
:07:40. | :07:41. | ||
pay the bills. It is hard. There is nothing worse than missing the cut, | :07:41. | :07:45.
when you feel you have played well. You have just got to pick yourself | :07:45. | :07:50.
up and move on to the next week. This is my dream and what I have | :07:50. | :07:56.
always wanted to do. The sacrifices have to be maids and hopefully, in | :07:56. | :08:00.
time, but will pay off. Spending the winter at home allows Olivia to | :08:00. | :08:03.
work on her technique and fitness. She will be back on the tour in the | :08:03. | :08:06.
New Year, but, for now, Royal Jersey is providing a reassuringly | :08:06. | :08:16.
familiar practice ground. It feels good to be back. I miss | :08:16. | :08:20.
the sunshine and warm weather, but it is great to come home and | :08:20. | :08:25.
reassess everything, keep myself grounded. | :08:25. | :08:28.
Now, apparently this time of year is a dangerous time for these | :08:28. | :08:30.
little fellows, but Guernsey's Hedgehog Rescue Centre will soon | :08:30. | :08:33.
have to close its doors. So, just who will be there to help the | :08:33. | :08:37.
Island's prickliest residents? Penny Elderfield reports. | :08:37. | :08:41.
The modern world can be a dangerous place for hedgehogs. There are | :08:41. | :08:44.
strimmers to contend with, bonfires and busy roads. But, luckily, since | :08:44. | :08:47.
2005 Dawn has been running a rescue centre helping hundreds of | :08:47. | :08:54.
hedgehogs each year. Six years on, though, the decision has been made | :08:54. | :09:02.
to close it. It has been a very hard decision, that we have been | :09:02. | :09:08.
struggling for 18 months because of the shortage of volunteers. It | :09:08. | :09:13.
became very difficult to cover the rotors and I work seven days a week | :09:13. | :09:16.
and it has just got too much. are currently 60 hedgehogs here, | :09:16. | :09:19.
all of which will be released, including Rocket, who will be let | :09:19. | :09:23.
out later this week. But the centre won't be accepting anymore and the | :09:23. | :09:33.
GSPCA has stepped into help. has been passing on our details and | :09:33. | :09:39.
people are being made aware that we're taking in these hedgehogs. We | :09:39. | :09:44.
have seen three or four hedgehogs a day coming into the shelter. It is | :09:44. | :09:48.
a lot more work for ourselves. Dawn the hard work is likely to | :09:48. | :09:51.
continue until next spring, when she can release the final hedgehogs | :09:51. | :10:01.
:10:01. | :10:02. | ||
at the centre, and finally close it Let's see what the weather is going | :10:02. | :10:08.
to do. Good evening. Not a great deal of change in the weather at | :10:08. | :10:11.
this evening, but tomorrow at the chance of some rain turning up as | :10:11. | :10:15.
more cloud consent of the Atlantic. A weather front gets in close | :10:15. | :10:21.
enough tomorrow to bring some rain. Try for tonight and much of the day | :10:21. | :10:28.
tomorrow. This is the weather front I'm talking about. That moves | :10:28. | :10:33.
somewhat closer towards the south- west by midday tomorrow. Just | :10:33. | :10:38.
enough cloud, thick enough to give us some outbreaks of rain during | :10:39. | :10:42.
the evening tomorrow. At the time we get into their estate that will | :10:42. | :10:50.
have moved away and Thursday should be a bright, dry day. So, as we | :10:50. | :10:54.
move towards the weekend, there should be some fine weather around, | :10:54. | :11:00.
becoming cloudy into Saturday. Overnight tonight, patchy cloud | :11:00. | :11:07.
which will become expensive - - extensive by the morning. Tomorrow | :11:07. | :11:11.
we will have a lot of the cloud for much of the day, although it will | :11:11. | :11:15.
brighten up for a time in the early afternoon. To end the day we will | :11:15. | :11:19.
see some light and patchy rain spilling from the south-west. | :11:19. | :11:26.
Temperatures tomorrow up to 13 degrees. It will also become quite | :11:26. | :11:36.
:11:36. | :11:51. | ||
The forecasts for Thursday is bright and dry, a little bit cooler. | :11:51. | :11:55.
Friday the same, but with more cloud coming in on Saturday and | :11:55. | :12:04.
temperatures down a bit on what we A Jersey woman has won a national | :12:04. | :12:07.
award for the work she does for animals in the island. Remember | :12:07. | :12:10.
Laddy here? He was blind in both eyes. Well, Bunny Roberts arranged | :12:10. | :12:13.
him to be flown to the UK on a private jet for specialist | :12:14. | :12:17.
treatment. He has now got his sight back and is leading a normal life. | :12:17. | :12:20.
It is stories like these that Bunny says got her the award. We are | :12:20. | :12:23.
coming up to Christmas now and an animal is not just for Christmas, | :12:23. | :12:28.
it is for life. It doesn't matter what it is. Now is the most | :12:28. | :12:33.
important time for them. Things are getting difficult to because the | :12:33. | :12:37.
economy is not great and people have them for five minutes and then | :12:37. | :12:41. |
