"Beautiful, fun-loving and an amazing friend" - tributes pour in | :00:09. | :00:18.
for the Guernsey woman killed in Putting a price on care - calls for | :00:18. | :00:22.
more financial support for thousands of carers. | :00:22. | :00:25.
And, on a roll, Jersey Rugby Club celebrates their ninth consecutive | :00:25. | :00:35.
:00:35. | :00:44. | ||
win. Will they score another An amazing friend, just one tribute | :00:44. | :00:47.
to a young Guernsey woman who's been killed in a traffic accident | :00:47. | :00:52.
in London. Ellie Carey died after her bicycle was involved in a | :00:52. | :00:57.
collision with a lorry. Penny Elderfield reports. | :00:57. | :01:02.
At 22, Ellie had everything to look forward to in life. But it's a life | :01:02. | :01:06.
that was sadly cut short. A student studying at University in London, | :01:06. | :01:11.
she was killed in a road accident there last Friday. Since then | :01:11. | :01:13.
tributes have been pouring in online from those that knew and | :01:13. | :01:22.
loved her. Ellie has been a volunteer for Bridge To Sri Lanka | :01:22. | :01:31.
for over a year. She loved a life. She was always happy and smiling. | :01:31. | :01:36.
In fact, she had offered to go back again after her studies. We were | :01:36. | :01:42.
going to discuss it more. I'm so sad. She would have given so much | :01:42. | :01:46.
of herself. She was a wonderful girl. And it's clear that's a view | :01:46. | :01:50.
that is shared by so many others. A man's since been arrested on | :01:50. | :01:52.
suspicion of causing death by careless driving, and bailed to | :01:52. | :02:02.
Guernsey police are investigating after a man was found dead in a | :02:02. | :02:06.
hotel over the weekend. The man, in his 30s, was found in the Trelade | :02:06. | :02:09.
in St Martin's on Saturday evening. Officers say his death is | :02:09. | :02:12.
unexplained and will release more details once his next of kin have | :02:12. | :02:16.
been told. Meanwhile investigations are | :02:16. | :02:20.
continuing into the unexplained death of a man in St Peter Port. | :02:20. | :02:24.
37-year-old Lee Solano was found at an address in Back Street on Friday | :02:24. | :02:28.
afternoon. Three local men were arrested in connection with the | :02:28. | :02:32.
incident and have now been released on police bail. Anyone who saw or | :02:32. | :02:35.
had contact with Lee Solano last Thursday or Friday should contact | :02:35. | :02:40.
Guernsey police. In Jersey, A man was knocked | :02:40. | :02:43.
unconscious during an assault in Town Park in the early hours of | :02:43. | :02:46.
this morning. The 37-year-old was taken to hospital with head | :02:46. | :02:51.
injuries, which aren't thought to be serious. Police describe the | :02:51. | :02:54.
attacker as male, about five foot eight inches tall, with short or | :02:54. | :02:57.
shaven hair and wearing a white or light-coloured top. He's believed | :02:57. | :03:01.
to have been with two women at the time. | :03:01. | :03:05.
There's calls for more financial support for carers in Jersey. | :03:05. | :03:08.
Around 7,000 people in the island look after a loved one, but the | :03:08. | :03:11.
Jersey Association of Carers say while there's more awareness of the | :03:11. | :03:14.
struggles carers face, the government still needs to offer | :03:14. | :03:19.
more support. Beckie Wiliams reports. | :03:19. | :03:23.
This was David and his wife, Mary in happier times. Five years ago | :03:23. | :03:28.
she was diagnosed with lung disease and is now bedridden. Make sure the | :03:28. | :03:32.
things aren't getting caught. needs round-the-clock care and | :03:32. | :03:36.
David can't do it all. But he's had to get in private carers here in | :03:36. | :03:41.
from the UK because he says the cost of local care is too much. | :03:41. | :03:51.
:03:51. | :03:53. | ||
It's a very big problem. I've been paying in April and May, 425 a day. | :03:53. | :03:56.
Although we had excellent service from Social Services, district | :03:56. | :04:04.
nurses, no-one could give us the care my wife needed. -- Social | :04:04. | :04:08.
Security. And that financial burden is an issue facing more than 7,000 | :04:08. | :04:12.
islanders who are carers. There is help available for people on income | :04:12. | :04:15.
support, but bosses here at the Jersey Association of Carers | :04:15. | :04:20.
believe middle earners need more assistance. A lot of people do find | :04:20. | :04:27.
they have to give up work to care for people at home. If they want | :04:27. | :04:33.
some time off, the care is very expensive. Social Security say | :04:33. | :04:36.
there are plans to introduce a new care benefit that won't be means | :04:36. | :04:46.
tested. The states have agreed the legislation for a new long-term | :04:46. | :04:51.
care benefits, a contributory benefit. We hope the regulations | :04:51. | :04:55.
under that legislation will define the amounts people receive and the | :04:55. | :04:59.
amount of repayment. Meanwhile for David there's a constant need to | :04:59. | :05:02.
balance the books. He's one of the lucky ones and can afford private | :05:02. | :05:05.
care. But the many other carers in Jersey without savings will welcome | :05:06. | :05:15.
:05:16. | :05:24. | ||
To Channel Islanders are gearing up for an epic adventure. They are set | :05:24. | :05:28.
to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa next week after winning a | :05:28. | :05:31.
national competition. Their part by a little earlier and so I started | :05:31. | :05:36.
by asking them how it all came about. I saw the competition on | :05:36. | :05:43.
line. It was to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in the most creative | :05:43. | :05:48.
manner whilst raising money for Tanzanian charities. I entered on | :05:48. | :05:53.
line. The reason you won the competition, there is a clue, | :05:53. | :06:01.
around your neck. We both have a camera. I have Mainz strapped to my | :06:01. | :06:07.
chest. It will be taking a time lapse of the entire plan, taking a | :06:07. | :06:14.
picture every second. We will create a film at the end. Ed will | :06:14. | :06:21.
film documentary footage. At the end of it, we will produce a DVD we | :06:21. | :06:26.
can show people and sell and so on. You raise the money by selling the | :06:26. | :06:34.
DVD? Yes. Ally starring in the DVD? We thought rather than doing | :06:34. | :06:41.
decline, we would do the training montage. We will do some footage | :06:41. | :06:46.
around the studio. All sorts of things travelling to and from Mount | :06:46. | :06:52.
Kilimanjaro. It gives another perspective. You mention training | :06:52. | :06:57.
montages, can you tell us what you have been up to as a pair? The is a | :06:57. | :07:04.
lot -- there is not a lot of Manton this areas in the Channel Islands - | :07:04. | :07:11.
- mountain's. Nothing can train due for altitude sickness. Hopefully, | :07:11. | :07:18.
we are fit enough so that will not happen. How you feeling, nervous? | :07:18. | :07:24.
Excited and nervous. You have all these expectations but it is not | :07:24. | :07:29.
until you get there that the real nerds will kick in. When you start? | :07:29. | :07:32.
We fly on Saturday and arrive Sunday and commends climbing on | :07:32. | :07:37.
Sunday. This time next week, you will be getting up the mind turned. | :07:38. | :07:44.
What about the charity and with the money will go to? There are various | :07:44. | :07:49.
charities in Tanzania. Everything from malnutrition, disease, and | :07:49. | :07:58.
even supporting people end Tanzania. There's a whole host of charities | :07:58. | :08:05.
that we are climbing with. Adds to the pressure. Yes. We are looking | :08:05. | :08:09.
forward to it. Can't wait to get up there. Nerves, you cannot plan for | :08:09. | :08:15.
it. Good luck. Keep us posted and we look forward to seeing the DVD | :08:15. | :08:21.
and the end. Thank you very much. It may have been a wet and windy | :08:21. | :08:25.
day but that did not stop Jersey rugby club claiming a 9th | :08:25. | :08:35.
:08:35. | :08:37. | ||
consecutive win. League One. A penalty kick from Jersey's | :08:37. | :08:40.
opponents, Coventry, started the points rolling in but after that it | :08:40. | :08:45.
was Jersey's game. But, it wasn't an easy win with challenging | :08:45. | :08:49.
conditions to contend with. But despite the rain and the mud, | :08:49. | :08:53.
almost 2,000 spectators turned up to watch some very tight rugby from | :08:53. | :09:03.
:09:03. | :09:03. | ||
the home side. It makes such a difference to us, knowing it is not | :09:03. | :09:07.
just friends and family, people are supporting us and put in the island | :09:07. | :09:14.
on the map. In the second half, it got muddier and meaner, with Jersey | :09:14. | :09:21.
applying more pressure. At full- time the score was 29-3, making it | :09:21. | :09:24.
a ninth consecutive win for Jersey. It means they remain in fourth | :09:24. | :09:27.
place in the league. And at the halfway point in the season, the | :09:27. | :09:35.
coach is confident. We have played every single side, we know we can | :09:35. | :09:39.
beat the through lost two. We believe that. Another day, we can | :09:39. | :09:44.
beat anybody in this league. We feel confident. We have to have a | :09:44. | :09:48.
look with injury and referee decisions but that is the nature of | :09:48. | :09:52.
professional sport will do we feel we're in control of our destiny. | :09:52. | :09:55.
well deserved smiles for Jersey and there were also celebrations this | :09:55. | :09:58.
weekend for Guernsey who won their away game against Sutton and Epsom, | :09:58. | :10:02.
14- 40. The Sarnian side sit fifth in the London and South-East | :10:02. | :10:07.
Division One. So a fine weekend for rugby in the islands, which is more | :10:07. | :10:17.
:10:17. | :10:24. | ||
I have a feeling that some more wet and windy weather on the way. | :10:24. | :10:26.
colder now across the Channel Islands not will continue tonight | :10:26. | :10:32.
and tomorrow. There is a fairly raw feel to the wind coming from the | :10:32. | :10:38.
north-west and it is feeding in north-west and it is feeding in | :10:38. | :10:41.
quite a few showers. Winds are from the north-west, that is why we have | :10:41. | :10:45.
had a drop in temperatures and we continue in the same vein tomorrow. | :10:45. | :10:50.
It will be quite cloudy tomorrow. Limited brighter weather off and on | :10:50. | :10:55.
to Iraq the day. Into Wednesday afternoon, perhaps a clearance of | :10:55. | :11:00.
the frontal system but with the risk of showers and a blustery | :11:00. | :11:06.
north-west Winforton overnight, showers continue. Temperatures can | :11:06. | :11:11.
drop down to five degrees. Tomorrow, with showers from dawn onwards, and | :11:11. | :11:15.
they will continue and the other front close by means we will keep | :11:15. | :11:20.
cloud for much of the day, ten Celsius the highest temperature. A | :11:20. | :11:24.
brisk north-westerly and you feel cold and the coastal waters | :11:24. | :11:34.
:11:34. | :11:34. | ||
forecast has it from the north or north-west. Otherwise, many good. | :11:34. | :11:44.
:11:44. | :11:50. | ||
Very messy surfing conditions because of the onshore breeze. That | :11:50. | :11:54.
is through until Wednesday, four to five feet on the beaches. Until the | :11:54. | :11:59.
end of the week, it is drier by Friday. Wednesday, frequent showers | :11:59. | :12:04.
in the morning but becoming more isolated. Still the risk of showers | :12:04. | :12:10.
and slightly warmer on Thursday. More cloud coming, becoming mainly | :12:10. | :12:16.
dry. Friday, possibly the best day, sunny spells, a risk of a few | :12:16. | :12:25.
showers and temperatures up to ten Finally, while snow has been | :12:25. | :12:29.
falling across Scotland today at the moment, it looks like this is | :12:29. | :12:33.
the closest Jersey will get to a White Christmas. The White House on | :12:33. | :12:36.
St Ouen's seawall will be painted white again in time for Christmas. | :12:36. | :12:39. |
