Good evening. The top story tonight. A crumbling quay means disruption | :00:11. | :00:18.
for thousands of Condor Ferries passengers. Plus a heaving safe | :00:18. | :00:23.
haven. The refuge struggling to cope with a surge in demand. And | :00:23. | :00:33.
the sights that won Guernsey a major Hollywood movie. | :00:33. | :00:36.
Condor Ferries is moving all its sailings from Weymouth to Poole | :00:36. | :00:41.
because of serious safety concerns about the port. The company, which | :00:41. | :00:44.
sails to the Channel Islands, says there are problems with the | :00:44. | :00:50.
structural integrity of the ferry berth. I spoke to our reporter Paul | :00:51. | :00:54.
Clifton a short while ago about what it means for the business and | :00:54. | :01:02.
the passengers. For passengers it is disruptive. The company is | :01:03. | :01:07.
contacting passengers booked on future sailings from Weymouth to | :01:07. | :01:11.
the Channel Islands and telling them the port will move and they | :01:11. | :01:18.
are to go to Poole instead. That is a longer journey. The timetable | :01:18. | :01:25.
will change, as well. It is a headache for Condor Ferries. It | :01:25. | :01:29.
stores and refuelling of there and many of the 800 people who work for | :01:29. | :01:35.
the company live in that area as well. Why is it happening? | :01:35. | :01:40.
problem is serious. It is about the structural integrity of the ferry | :01:40. | :01:47.
port. The Engineer is not certain it is safe. The local council said | :01:47. | :01:51.
that divers have inspected the harbour wall and found cracks under | :01:51. | :01:56.
the water line adjacent to where the vessel moors. The surface of | :01:56. | :02:00.
the quay has dropped and cracks have appeared. There will be one | :02:00. | :02:05.
more sailing on Friday and then it will be closed. We do not know how | :02:05. | :02:11.
long for. It could be months. A lot of the Olympic sailing events are | :02:11. | :02:18.
happening close to the port. It is urgent. For Poole, it will be an | :02:18. | :02:24.
unexpected boost for facilities. They will welcome Condor Ferries | :02:24. | :02:28.
with open arms. It has been open for less than a | :02:28. | :02:30.
year, and already Jersey's Sanctuary House hostel is bursting | :02:30. | :02:34.
at the seams. The refuge for men going through hard times was set up | :02:34. | :02:38.
in a former bed and breakfast in St Aubin. Demand has been so high, it | :02:38. | :02:41.
has had to almost double its accommodation by taking rooms in | :02:41. | :02:44.
another guest house in the village. It now gets up to 20 new enquiries | :02:44. | :02:52.
a week and has a waiting list. Rachel Royce reports. | :02:52. | :02:57.
The kitchen is where residents will come and go, after meeting for a | :02:57. | :03:02.
chat. The social life was one aspect that helped this taxi driver | :03:02. | :03:08.
get back on his feet. I had a slight break down and was not pay | :03:08. | :03:14.
my bills in time. I lost my apartment and has nowhere to go. | :03:14. | :03:22.
There was nowhere for somebody in that position in Jersey. It offers | :03:22. | :03:26.
comfortable rooms, but last night somebody in need spent the night on | :03:26. | :03:34.
a sofa. We have taken between five and seven rooms in one and | :03:34. | :03:38.
negotiating another eight rooms in this area for the beginning of | :03:38. | :03:44.
March. The problem is we have a continuing influx from different | :03:44. | :03:49.
agencies, from ministries, social services and from the prison, and | :03:50. | :03:55.
from the church and from every aspect of the community. We are | :03:55. | :03:59.
having to deal with three a day which we do not have the | :03:59. | :04:05.
accommodation. When it first opened, it faced an lot of local opposition | :04:05. | :04:10.
with people concerned there might be undesirable staying, perhaps | :04:10. | :04:15.
with drug and alcohol problems. But since it has opened its doors, the | :04:15. | :04:20.
community has rallied around. truly has turned around. When you | :04:20. | :04:24.
telephone the to say you were coming, I did ask and they shrugged | :04:24. | :04:31.
their shoulders to say it is OK. It is a good news story. How do people | :04:31. | :04:38.
feel now? They feel that Colin has identified a need and these men | :04:38. | :04:43.
need help and there is a section of society that previously was missed | :04:43. | :04:50.
out. And they are doing a fantastic job. One seat in the lounge is | :04:50. | :04:55.
reserved for Kevin. A mannequin of a real-life Kevin who committed | :04:55. | :05:00.
suicide just before the refuge opened its doors. The stress of | :05:00. | :05:10.
homelessness was a burden too far. Staff at one of the island's | :05:10. | :05:12.
biggest internet companies have been told they could lose their | :05:13. | :05:17.
jobs. Employees at Indigo Starfish have been told they might be made | :05:17. | :05:22.
redundant. The UK government plans to scrap tax relief from goods sold | :05:22. | :05:27.
from the islands. No legal challenge has been mounted. | :05:27. | :05:30.
More than 7,000 people need to register on Guernsey's electoral | :05:30. | :05:33.
roll for the Home Department to meet its target. The Election 2012 | :05:33. | :05:35.
team was hoping for 35,000 islanders to be registered by the | :05:35. | :05:45.
:05:45. | :05:52. | ||
29th February. But so far only 27,452 people have signed up. | :05:52. | :05:59.
They have been part of the Battle of Flowers parade for four decades. | :05:59. | :06:02.
The Jersey Young Farmers' Club. But they are pulling out of the event | :06:02. | :06:06.
because of money problems. Bosses say they are disappointed with the | :06:06. | :06:10.
decision. Behind me is the headquarters for | :06:10. | :06:13.
the Young Farmers' Club. Somewhat quiet today. Perhaps a sign of | :06:13. | :06:19.
things to come. For this year's Battle of Flowers, the club will | :06:19. | :06:24.
not be taking part. That is because of a lack of money. Nobody from the | :06:24. | :06:30.
club wanted to appear on camera. If in a statement, their chairman said | :06:30. | :06:36.
they were bitterly disappointed to make the decision, especially as it | :06:36. | :06:46.
:06:46. | :06:48. | ||
The Young Farmers' Club says that income has dropped significantly in | :06:48. | :06:53.
the past 18 months and said they had subsidise the cost of the float | :06:53. | :07:03.
:07:03. | :07:06. | ||
The club said they would spend the next 12 months raising awareness of | :07:06. | :07:14.
what they do and also to raise cash so they can return next year. The | :07:14. | :07:16.
Association for the Battle of Flowers said they would be | :07:16. | :07:22.
disappointed they will not take part in this year's parade. | :07:22. | :07:26.
Guernsey is still waiting to hear when a Hollywood blockbuster | :07:26. | :07:30.
directed by this person will be filmed in the island. Big hitters | :07:30. | :07:34.
from the movie have secretly visited. They were shown around by | :07:34. | :07:40.
a very proud Guernsey woman. We met up with her and found out where she | :07:40. | :07:45.
took the likes of Kenneth Branagh. You are one of the top guides in | :07:46. | :07:51.
Guernsey. We are approaching a familiar sight. Castle Cornet. You | :07:51. | :07:56.
had some Hollywood royalty to visit. Kenneth Branagh, the producer of | :07:56. | :08:03.
the Harry Potter movies, what did they make of it? Really impressed. | :08:03. | :08:12.
I think it is a gorgeous entry into Guernsey. And it is featured in the | :08:12. | :08:16.
book. Juliet arrives and this is what they see. They loved Castle | :08:16. | :08:22.
Cornet. Because it is a huge antique building, there is no way | :08:22. | :08:27.
you can make a set to look as good as the real thing. For you, were | :08:27. | :08:34.
used star-struck? I was. I have to have a secret smile to myself. | :08:34. | :08:38.
Thinking I am driving a car and next door to me is Kenneth Branagh. | :08:38. | :08:46.
They were lovely. They were really professional. They concentrated on | :08:46. | :08:53.
what they had to do. Lovely people to talk to. They were not... | :08:53. | :09:02.
egos! No. Really good. Were there other areas he went to? Yes. Shall | :09:02. | :09:12.
:09:12. | :09:12. | ||
we look at some of them? Absolutely. We can go down this path. That is | :09:12. | :09:19.
an incredible view. It is fabulous. They wanted lots and lots of views | :09:19. | :09:25.
of the cliffs and the south coast. I came to as many head lands as I | :09:25. | :09:32.
could. This is a contrast to Castle Cornet. That is right. With the old | :09:32. | :09:37.
buildings. And these magnificent natural views of the clips. | :09:37. | :09:44.
Spectacular. Surely that view needs to be filmed. When will they start? | :09:44. | :09:51.
I wish I knew. Let's hope it is not too long. Fingers crossed. And if | :09:51. | :09:54.
Mike thinks he is going to interview the stars of the film, he | :09:54. | :09:57.
interview the stars of the film, he might have to fight for it to! Now | :09:57. | :10:02.
the weather. Good evening. Some quiet weather | :10:02. | :10:09.
tonight and tomorrow. The winds drop and there will be a fair cup | :10:09. | :10:15.
of cloud. Temperatures back up to nine degrees tomorrow afternoon. | :10:15. | :10:21.
The cloud will hold the temperatures up. The weather front | :10:21. | :10:26.
is weakening over the next few days. By Friday, it will allow this | :10:26. | :10:31.
weather front travelling through central Britain to head towards the | :10:31. | :10:36.
Channel Islands Friday night to Saturday. Until then, a lot of dry | :10:36. | :10:43.
weather. There will be good visibility overnight. Tomorrow, | :10:43. | :10:48.
cloudy, but it should break up and in the afternoon, sunshine | :10:48. | :10:55.
developing. Temperatures up to nine degrees. It will not be as windy. | :10:55. | :11:00.
The winds will be north-westerly and they will be moderate to | :11:00. | :11:05.
decreasing light by the late afternoon. On to the marine | :11:05. | :11:15.
:11:15. | :11:21. | ||
forecast. And the times of high water. The onshore breeze will make | :11:22. | :11:27.
the surf messy on the north coast. Up to three feet and choppy. The | :11:27. | :11:33.
outlook, there will be a change as we move into the weekend with wet | :11:33. | :11:37.
weather. Saturday is generally cloudy and breezy with outbreaks of | :11:38. | :11:45.
rain. On Saturday night in two Sunday, there will be a big drop in | :11:45. | :11:49. |
