Good evening. Welcome to BBC Channel Islands. Vening. Welcome to BBC | :00:07. | :00:12.
Channel Islands. Six million for the elite and the every day athletes, a | :00:13. | :00:16.
funding boost for Jersey Sport. We have more people, young people | :00:17. | :00:19.
particularly, taking part in sport, we also have more people performing | :00:20. | :00:23.
at a higher level, so it is looking at the whole spectrum. Dangers of | :00:24. | :00:29.
the deep. An unexploded device found in St Peter Port harbour. Plus | :00:30. | :00:32.
running out of honey, fears of a shortage of the sweet stuff by | :00:33. | :00:35.
Christmas. And this week it warms up again, we | :00:36. | :00:40.
will have milder air, it stays unsettled. There will be rain or | :00:41. | :00:43.
shower, I will have a full forecast later in the problem. | :00:44. | :00:46.
`` programme. An extra ?6 million could be spent | :00:47. | :00:58.
over the next two years on creating a sporting legacy in Jersey. The | :00:59. | :01:03.
States has published its new sports strategy called Fit For the Future. | :01:04. | :01:07.
The idea is to improve sports venues in preparation for the hosting of | :01:08. | :01:11.
the island game in the 2015. But money will be spent at grass`roots | :01:12. | :01:17.
level. After winning 80 General Medical | :01:18. | :01:22.
Councille, more than 20 gold Team Jersey returned with bags of pride | :01:23. | :01:27.
and precious metal. But in two years time the Island Games will be coming | :01:28. | :01:32.
home, to Jersey. In the run up the states has published a strategy to | :01:33. | :01:36.
create a sporting legacy. I hope there is going to be a strong voice | :01:37. | :01:40.
for sport in Jersey. It will be better co`ordinated. I hope we have | :01:41. | :01:43.
more people, young people particularly taking part in sport, | :01:44. | :01:47.
more physically literate and that we also have more people performing at | :01:48. | :01:51.
a higher level so it is looking at the whole spectrum. I think it is an | :01:52. | :01:55.
opportunity for us to have a real pride in our sport. | :01:56. | :01:59.
As parliament of those plan, an extra ?6 million will be spent on | :02:00. | :02:04.
fort in the next two two years. 4.5 million will beout used to upgrade | :02:05. | :02:09.
facilities, and the rest will be spent on encouraging more people to | :02:10. | :02:13.
take up different sports. The plans include new pitches, | :02:14. | :02:19.
improving the athletics track at the FB fields and up #2k3wr5iding school | :02:20. | :02:25.
facilities. If they go ahead a new organising body will be set up to | :02:26. | :02:28.
oversee sport in Jersey. Some question how the money is being | :02:29. | :02:32.
spent. It seems to be labour intensified in the sense there will | :02:33. | :02:35.
be people employed. Again, if you look at the document, where does | :02:36. | :02:39.
this salary come from? What I don't want to see is bureaucracy taking | :02:40. | :02:43.
over another bureaucracy, and therefore, money being spent on | :02:44. | :02:46.
salaries when it should be going into sport. After the success of | :02:47. | :02:51.
Bermuda, Jersey has a lot to live up to in hosting the 2015 Island Games, | :02:52. | :02:56.
but this Fife year sports strategy extends beyond that, and perhaps the | :02:57. | :03:00.
biggest challenge will be keeping that sporting legacy alive. | :03:01. | :03:13.
An ex cloo collusion zone is in place round St Peter Port harbour. | :03:14. | :03:16.
There is believed to be a depth charge and the Royal Navy are on the | :03:17. | :03:22.
way to help deal with it. Even who sailed in or out has | :03:23. | :03:28.
probably travelled over it. Almost 70 years on and there appears | :03:29. | :03:33.
to be another reminder of the legacy o Occupation, this suspicious | :03:34. | :03:36.
looking object is believed to be a depth charge. They were used | :03:37. | :03:40.
throughout the war to target shipping and U`boats. The suspected | :03:41. | :03:45.
explosive device is in a zone that centres over a site known as the | :03:46. | :03:48.
ammunition wreck. The device is just a few hundred yards in that | :03:49. | :03:51.
direction by that boat in the distance. It is quite understandably | :03:52. | :03:59.
a no`go zone but it has caused a few headaches for some of the bigger | :04:00. | :04:02.
ships. For the harbour master this discovery is causing a few issue, as | :04:03. | :04:07.
it lies on the main route into the harbour but he says its impact will | :04:08. | :04:12.
be limited. Pretty much all vessels can get in | :04:13. | :04:16.
without difficulty, it does restrict the options for the biggest ships | :04:17. | :04:21.
for getting in and out, but we don't expect it to unduly affect things. | :04:22. | :04:26.
This is my last week at work, and it is a different way of finishing off | :04:27. | :04:31.
a career. It is just two month since another | :04:32. | :04:36.
wartime device was detonated off Guernsey's coast. Experts from the | :04:37. | :04:40.
Royal Navy were on hand then and are expected toer a rive in the island | :04:41. | :04:43.
once again in the next few hour, to decide what to do next. | :04:44. | :04:51.
3,000 people in Jersey were affected by a power cut last night. A cable | :04:52. | :04:57.
fault at Grand Vaux caused annoutage, it had an minor knock on | :04:58. | :05:02.
effect on Guernsey's electricity grid. Engineers worked through the | :05:03. | :05:05.
night. Millions of euros are being spent on | :05:06. | :05:09.
a new marine energy facility in Cherbourg. The naval defence company | :05:10. | :05:15.
DCNS will manufacture the turbines and a scheme set to seat them | :05:16. | :05:25.
installed by 2016. Last week the French President was in Cherbourg to | :05:26. | :05:30.
an nous the creation of 1,000 new jobs. The plan is to leverage the | :05:31. | :05:38.
naval shipbuilding expertise of DCNS into the manufacture and deployment | :05:39. | :05:43.
of tidal turbines. The first is to install a pilot scheme by 2016. The | :05:44. | :05:51.
project is not only the farms, we want to built an industry round | :05:52. | :05:57.
tidal energy. We think we can achieve a turn over of 1 billion by | :05:58. | :06:01.
2025. Earlier this year, DCNS bought a | :06:02. | :06:06.
controlling interest in open hydroand plans to set sup a | :06:07. | :06:10.
production facility for turbines in Cherbourg. We talk about tidal but | :06:11. | :06:15.
there is not only tidal, we have also wave energy, which is a | :06:16. | :06:22.
promising thing, we have atomic energy conversion which is a great | :06:23. | :06:26.
solution, and also floating wind turbine, that is the future of wind | :06:27. | :06:31.
industry. So with all those solution, we know | :06:32. | :06:36.
that there is a great future for the industry related to marine energy, | :06:37. | :06:40.
and we want to be part of that, and not only part of it, but want to be | :06:41. | :06:44.
one of the leaders of this industry in France. | :06:45. | :06:48.
Just where this leaves Alderney and the other Channel Islands in terms | :06:49. | :06:52.
of marine renewable energy is uncertain. DCNS plans to be a big | :06:53. | :06:56.
player in a global market but is no ruling out deploying turbines on the | :06:57. | :07:06.
other side of the Alderney race. You are watching the BBC in the | :07:07. | :07:09.
Channel Islands. Latest on in Spotlight. The only way is | :07:10. | :07:14.
up`and`up, we join steeple jacks restoring a mill chimney to its | :07:15. | :07:19.
former glory. In sport Guernsey's Heather Watson | :07:20. | :07:26.
has dropped out scr side of the top 100 players in the world. She is now | :07:27. | :07:31.
133. Her poor run of form continued with a first round exit in the | :07:32. | :07:35.
Luxembourg Open at the hands of Yanina Wickmayer. Jersey's Daniel | :07:36. | :07:42.
Hawksworth came 24th in the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii. Dan | :07:43. | :07:45.
was competing on the island of Kona in Hawaii. The event come prices a | :07:46. | :07:54.
2.4 mile swim; 112 mile cycle and a 122.2 mile run. Jersey could run out | :07:55. | :07:59.
of locally made honey by Christmas, the bee keepers association says | :08:00. | :08:04.
disease, pests and poor weather led to unproductive hies. The price of | :08:05. | :08:10.
island made honey could go up as a result. | :08:11. | :08:14.
It has been a very good year for fruit farmers, sunbathers and | :08:15. | :08:17.
gardener, but it seems these little fellows are having rather a hard | :08:18. | :08:20.
time of it. This is a lovely big hive. Lots of | :08:21. | :08:25.
bees. But across the island dozens of hives have been lost, production | :08:26. | :08:29.
of honey is well done and before too long, these are likely to be missing | :08:30. | :08:33.
from the shop shelves. There is going to be no honey left. | :08:34. | :08:37.
The major suppliers are saying they will probably run out round | :08:38. | :08:41.
Christmas time if not before. That limited supply is being blamed on a | :08:42. | :08:45.
plethora of problems for the little pollinators. The cold spring weather | :08:46. | :08:50.
coincided with the peak of the pollen and nectar flow so the bees | :08:51. | :08:56.
missed out. The American foul breed outbreak is causing problems too. | :08:57. | :09:00.
Bernie has felt that like many others. He has kept bees for more | :09:01. | :09:07.
than 40 year, my part has been reasonably productive. This year for | :09:08. | :09:11.
some reason or other, it has been completely at sea, you know, we are | :09:12. | :09:17.
looking at 50% yield down. The swarms keepers use to replenish | :09:18. | :09:21.
hives have been in decline but Bob is looking on the bright side. | :09:22. | :09:26.
Beekeepers are optimists. So next years it is going to be a bumper | :09:27. | :09:30.
year. Mind you, this year was going to be a bumper year I think! And | :09:31. | :09:38.
last year, too. But next year is going to be one definitely. Bob's | :09:39. | :09:43.
yar of honey is definitely half full but if yours is nearly empty you | :09:44. | :09:48.
better get to the shops before local suppliers run out. | :09:49. | :09:54.
Let us see if we are going to get bee friendly weather. It is milder | :09:55. | :09:59.
this week, but also unsettled. We will see rain or showers at times, | :10:00. | :10:03.
also breezy but the temperatures are on the rise. We will get back up | :10:04. | :10:09.
into quite high teens. At the moment though, we have an area of low | :10:10. | :10:13.
pressure swirling round central Britain has thrown the line of | :10:14. | :10:17.
cloud, still producing outbreaks of rain. That will fer out. Another one | :10:18. | :10:22.
will bump along the north coast of France 6789 so tomorrow morning we | :10:23. | :10:27.
could again be wet before it improves, and a large area of low | :10:28. | :10:31.
pressure across the Atlantic now, so we will have another line of rain | :10:32. | :10:34.
coming through, I think during the course of the early hours of | :10:35. | :10:37.
Wednesday morning but moving fast, so improving in the afternoon by the | :10:38. | :10:41.
middle of the week. So, overnight tonight, a bit of patchy rain | :10:42. | :10:46.
possible, westerly winds and night`time temperatures probably no | :10:47. | :10:51.
lower than 11 or 12. That is 52 or 54. As for tomorrow, well, there | :10:52. | :10:55.
will be rain in the morning I think. It will be patchy but fer out by the | :10:56. | :10:59.
afternoon and by the time we get to the end of the afternoon we might | :11:00. | :11:03.
get late sunshine, 14 degrees the top temperature, much lighter winds, | :11:04. | :11:07.
and mainly coming in from the east. So there is our coastal waters | :11:08. | :11:13.
forecast. The winds easterly force three or four. Rain becoming mainly | :11:14. | :11:16.
fair. Times of high water: for our surfers, the waves aren't | :11:17. | :11:26.
big but it is clean. Let us look further ahead to the | :11:27. | :11:39.
outlook, because we are expecting to see heavy rain, early on Wednesday | :11:40. | :11:43.
morning but it is moving fast, quite a windy day on Wednesday, | :11:44. | :11:47.
temperatures up tow 17 degree, Thursday bright and dry but breezy, | :11:48. | :11:52.
with further rain early on Friday. But much higher temperatures. That | :11:53. | :11:55.
is what we call autumn. one vast factory but one vast | :11:56. | :12:02.
market. Coming up: why high`fives landed a | :12:03. | :12:08.
lollipop mild in trouble. A setback for Olympic legacy at the Weymouth | :12:09. | :12:10.
and Portland National Sailing Academy. Coming up, stay with us to | :12:11. | :12:18.
see what the view is like from the top of this chimney stack. | :12:19. | :12:26.
A lollipop mild in Plymouth has left his job after being threatened with | :12:27. | :12:29.
suspension for high`fiving children as they crossed the road. Pensioner | :12:30. | :12:33.
Bob Slade had carried out the role for four years. The City Council | :12:34. | :12:37.
says patrols can be friendly but their full attention must be on the | :12:38. | :12:45.
road. This is the route near the primary | :12:46. | :12:52.
school where lollipop mild Bob Slade would high`5 some pupils as they | :12:53. | :12:56.
crossed the road. But a caution from the council saw him walk away from | :12:57. | :13:02.
the job last month. You would imagine high`5 being some person | :13:03. | :13:08.
putting up their hand and the other person hitting it. In this case, it | :13:09. | :13:15.
was God he was holding up his lollipop stick, his other hand would | :13:16. | :13:19.
be out and the children would hit his hand. I think it is just madness | :13:20. | :13:27.
that we now have a safety issue because somebody was being friendly | :13:28. | :13:31.
as part of their job. It is a very sad state that we have two appeal | :13:32. | :13:36.
for a mild who we definitely need back. Nobody from the school wanted | :13:37. | :13:40.
to comment but the council released a statement. | :13:41. | :14:01.
The lollipop mild did not want to be interviewed. Parents and pupils are | :14:02. | :14:07.
making their own way across this road without the help of a lollipop | :14:08. | :14:12.
mild. The council says they are recruiting for somebody to replace | :14:13. | :14:18.
him. We would like to hear what you think | :14:19. | :14:22.
about that. We already have comments coming in through our this page. `` | :14:23. | :14:31.
our Facebook page. More motorists aged over 50 are | :14:32. | :14:34.
drink`driving in Devon and Cornwall than most other parts of the | :14:35. | :14:38.
country. A Freedom of information request to all police forces shows | :14:39. | :14:41.
Devon and Cornwall in the top worst five. The south`west is also a | :14:42. | :14:45.
hotspot for over 75's drink driving. The figures are for 2010 to 2012. | :14:46. | :14:53.
The Energy Minister Ed Davey has told the BBC that a deal to build | :14:54. | :14:57.
new nuclear power station in Somerset is extremely close. | :14:58. | :15:00.
Ministers have been negotiating with EDF, the firm wanting to build | :15:01. | :15:04.
Hinkley C, over the price it will receive for the electricity it | :15:05. | :15:12.
generates. Managers at Launceston hospital are | :15:13. | :15:16.
to reopen ten beds at the unit. The beds had been closed because of | :15:17. | :15:20.
staff shortages. New staff are being taken on and all 20 beds should be | :15:21. | :15:24.
back in use by November. The Olympic sailing legacy left by | :15:25. | :15:27.
the 2012 games at Weymouth and Portland has suffered a setback. The | :15:28. | :15:31.
Sale Laser Centre on Portland at the South of the Olympic venue will | :15:32. | :15:35.
close from the start of December. It is hoped another company can be | :15:36. | :15:45.
found to take its place. The Olympics will be remembered as | :15:46. | :15:49.
one of the greatest events ever to happen in Dorset. There was great | :15:50. | :15:56.
celebration as it was selected as the sailing venue and then when | :15:57. | :16:01.
London was selected itself. One Word that kept occurring was legacy. The | :16:02. | :16:05.
legacy the Olympics will lead is really phenomenal. It is absolutely | :16:06. | :16:15.
amazing, fantastic news. We are still excited and we cannot contain | :16:16. | :16:23.
ourselves. Part of that legacy has been the laser sailing centre here | :16:24. | :16:26.
at the National sailing Academy. It has been providing easy access for | :16:27. | :16:30.
the sport, encouraging people to try it. But the company is restructuring | :16:31. | :16:36.
its business to provide franchises and will leave here in December. | :16:37. | :16:42.
They say they will honour all of its commitments and obligations until | :16:43. | :16:46.
it's closing date in December. It says it is working closely with the | :16:47. | :16:50.
Academy to ensure the trip transition runs smoothly. 5,000 | :16:51. | :16:54.
sailors have been through here this year alone. Work is underway to dry | :16:55. | :16:57.
and fine a new operator to take it over. | :16:58. | :17:03.
The High Court has decided not to look into plans for 1,500 homes on | :17:04. | :17:08.
the edge of Truro. The council had wanted judges to examine Cornwall | :17:09. | :17:11.
Council was my decision to approve the homes and school and hotel. The | :17:12. | :17:17.
project will link to a new stadium for Cornwall. The Exeter Chiefs made | :17:18. | :17:24.
light of the big names that came there this weekend. Not such good | :17:25. | :17:35.
news in football though. If we can start with the rugby. The result of | :17:36. | :17:41.
the weekend? A fantastic result. This Cardiff Blues had lots of great | :17:42. | :17:47.
players but the chief just blew them away. This is another guy who has | :17:48. | :17:59.
been catching the eye of some selectors at the moment. A mild of | :18:00. | :18:05.
the match performance from him. `` mild of the match performance. They | :18:06. | :18:14.
will not be happy with this one. He makes them look like schoolboys. It | :18:15. | :18:19.
was all over for Cardiff. The award for the easiest try. What a | :18:20. | :18:27.
celebration! It is almost like he is running from 50 yards! Here, the | :18:28. | :18:36.
referee takes a tumble. In fairness to the referee, he got up quicker | :18:37. | :18:44.
than some footballers do! That brings us to the football. Exeter | :18:45. | :18:51.
City, not such a great result. Hartlepool made monkeys out of them! | :18:52. | :18:57.
Yes, a bad day at the office for Exeter. The mild of the match was | :18:58. | :19:05.
Jack Compton. It was just one traffic really. Look James fits in | :19:06. | :19:25.
with a bit of help. It went too long, too often. Plymouth Argyle, | :19:26. | :19:31.
the only side not to lose. A fair result for them? A fair result. | :19:32. | :19:39.
Plymouth probably should have edged it on chances but because they had | :19:40. | :19:50.
been sober, a drop was not bad. `` they had been so sure. The momentum | :19:51. | :19:59.
was killed and they could not quite get it. Away now to Torquay. They | :20:00. | :20:12.
will feel hard done by? Especially being in the lead. They should have | :20:13. | :20:21.
been 3`0 up at half`time. The defending was poor on the day. How | :20:22. | :20:30.
the referee or a linesman did not see this, it was ridiculous. Very | :20:31. | :20:40.
scruffy goal. A very good header. But they could not hold on. This is | :20:41. | :20:47.
a manager 's nightmare. There are struggling at the moment. Come on | :20:48. | :20:57.
Torquay! We can say that rugby reigns supreme in the south`west | :20:58. | :21:03.
this weekend. A clean sweep for the clubs. The Pirates won on Friday | :21:04. | :21:10.
night. Three out of three. We need bigger goals. Your old Cardiff! | :21:11. | :21:23.
If you have not got a head for heights, you may want to look away | :21:24. | :21:27.
for this next item. The chimney which is part of Coldharbour Mill in | :21:28. | :21:31.
Uffculme is being restored by steeplejacks so that the working | :21:32. | :21:34.
museum can continue to fire up its two steam engines. | :21:35. | :21:46.
It might look up at applying `` it might look like a climb up an | :21:47. | :21:50.
average that but this mild is 70 feet up a chimney. This is 126 feet | :21:51. | :21:56.
high and it is being given a face`lift. We are renewing the | :21:57. | :22:03.
mortar of the top 30 feet of this chimp me because it has eroded to | :22:04. | :22:09.
such a bad state. It was built in 1799 and ran as a commercial | :22:10. | :22:13.
spinning mill until 1981. A year later it became a working museum. | :22:14. | :22:19.
The mail is a listed building so we have a duty to look after it and | :22:20. | :22:28.
preserve it. We have events throughout the year and when it is | :22:29. | :22:34.
in steam, we need the chimney to be working. The stonework is coming | :22:35. | :22:45.
away so we will have to repair that. The mill started with the spinning | :22:46. | :22:50.
Jenny. Then in Georgian times, the apparatus got bigger. In Victorian | :22:51. | :22:56.
times, the machines were more powerful and they could have many | :22:57. | :22:59.
more of them, thanks to the power of steam. The mill often steps back in | :23:00. | :23:08.
time. School trips is the resource as projects about Victorian times. I | :23:09. | :23:16.
had experienced what it is like to be a Victorian child in the mills | :23:17. | :23:20.
and doing all the hard work that you had to do. Some children had to come | :23:21. | :23:26.
to work because their family had nothing to eat or because their | :23:27. | :23:33.
family was sick. Girls were doing the same jobs as boys and they got | :23:34. | :23:39.
less payment. Was that fair? No, I don't think that was fair. I wonder | :23:40. | :23:45.
if in Victorian times, they had children climbing this chimney to | :23:46. | :23:49.
clean it! I would rather look at it that way. | :23:50. | :24:06.
Very brave! The weather is next. We have some milder air heading our | :24:07. | :24:14.
way. But it is turning more and settled this week. We will see some | :24:15. | :24:18.
rain. Higher temperatures by the end of the week but it also becomes a | :24:19. | :24:24.
breezy. At the moment, we have an area of low pressure around Central | :24:25. | :24:29.
prison. It has produced the rain that we saw this morning. It will | :24:30. | :24:34.
move away from us in the next 24 hours. The big change as we move | :24:35. | :24:46.
into Wednesday. No pressure and a low band of cloud and rain. It is | :24:47. | :24:52.
moving quite fast so it will be ringing in the morning on Wednesday | :24:53. | :24:54.
but it will be brighter for the afternoon. This is the centre of the | :24:55. | :25:02.
area of low pressure. Our skies had cleared quite nicely. Earlier | :25:03. | :25:09.
today, our cameraman was on rich toward Dorset and he caught a | :25:10. | :25:12.
glimpse of some of the low cloud first thing this morning but also | :25:13. | :25:15.
some of the blue sky later in the day. Some fantastic views of our | :25:16. | :25:26.
coastline. The winds had not been overly strong and sees relatively | :25:27. | :25:36.
quiet. It was clear skies are still around this evening which means it | :25:37. | :25:44.
will turn quite chilly. The showers will fade away tonight and all the | :25:45. | :25:48.
clear sky were moving across all of us tonight. Overnight temperatures | :25:49. | :25:52.
getting down as low as three degrees. Most of us around six or | :25:53. | :26:08.
seven degrees. As for tomorrow, a bit misty with some fog patches | :26:09. | :26:15.
first thing. Through the morning and into the afternoon, once they lose | :26:16. | :26:19.
the mist and fog, the sunshine will return and it will feel warmer than | :26:20. | :26:24.
today. The winds are generally liked and we could see temperatures of 15 | :26:25. | :26:29.
degrees. Not a bad day at all. Looking at the forecast for the | :26:30. | :26:34.
Isles of Scilly, here, a lot more cloud around and it could produce | :26:35. | :26:35.
rain in the morning. Wednesday morning, we see some rain | :26:36. | :27:13.
coming in. It will be replaced by brighter conditions as it moves | :27:14. | :27:18.
through. Breezy, milder but with sunny spells on Thursday. For which | :27:19. | :27:23.
weather again on Friday but even that should move through to allow | :27:24. | :27:28.
sunny spells into the afternoon. The temperatures are on their way up. 19 | :27:29. | :27:34.
degrees by the end of the week. You are not holding back when it | :27:35. | :27:40.
comes to the story of the lollipop mild. Take a look at our Facebook | :27:41. | :27:43.
page and you will see the comments there. Good night. | :27:44. | :27:47. |
