Welcome to a new week. Our top story: Up in flames, firefighters | :00:00. | :00:20.
investigate what caused this fire at a holiday camp in Jersey. The whole | :00:21. | :00:32.
village was on fire. Gale force winds and stormy seas `` the Channel | :00:33. | :00:37.
Islands. It trembled with the force of the waves. I will have a full | :00:38. | :00:43.
weather forecasts late in the programme. Why Christmas and New | :00:44. | :00:49.
Year was something special for this teenager. Jersey Fire and Rescue | :00:50. | :01:05.
Service says a fire at a holiday camp should be treated as arson | :01:06. | :01:11.
Firefighters were called to Plemont. Some of the buildings will | :01:12. | :01:20.
have to be destroyed. This is what confronted firefighters on Saturday | :01:21. | :01:24.
morning. When they arrived just after six o'clock, the flames had | :01:25. | :01:28.
already engulfed the central part of the derelict holiday camp. It took | :01:29. | :01:33.
more than 20 firefighters to put it out. They were here dampening down | :01:34. | :01:39.
until yesterday morning. The teams worked really well in Hull `` hard | :01:40. | :01:44.
conditions to achieve a really good results. We managed to contain the | :01:45. | :01:52.
fire. Embers were flying around We did really well to stop it | :01:53. | :01:58.
spreading. Now the firefighters say it should be now treated as arson. | :01:59. | :02:06.
They are not sure yet whether it was started deliberately or | :02:07. | :02:10.
accidentally. An investigation could take three weeks because the | :02:11. | :02:15.
structure is not safe. It is too dangerous for the fire service to go | :02:16. | :02:20.
in and that is why they have got constant security patrols here to | :02:21. | :02:23.
make sure no one goes near until the building is come `` the buildings | :02:24. | :02:28.
can finally be demolished. There were plans to demolish the site and | :02:29. | :02:31.
build new homes but these were put on hold after a parish appeal. The | :02:32. | :02:37.
architect representing the developer says the fighters and allow them to | :02:38. | :02:42.
demolish all of the buildings. Until batter is resolved, we cannot do any | :02:43. | :02:47.
demolition. We have to see an agreement before any works can be | :02:48. | :02:54.
done. Clearly the other buildings on the site will remain standing until | :02:55. | :02:58.
we have a fully valid planning permit that isn't stopped by any | :02:59. | :03:05.
appeal. In the meantime, with exposed asbestos and loose debris, | :03:06. | :03:08.
people are being warned to stay well away from the site. A part of | :03:09. | :03:16.
Guernsey's Maine coast road remains closed this evening as stormy steers | :03:17. | :03:22.
`` Swami `` stormy seas have continued to lash the island. It has | :03:23. | :03:31.
been a busy start to the year for many tradesmen. This is a dangerous | :03:32. | :03:42.
place to be. These people were knocked off their feet near Perelle. | :03:43. | :03:48.
Traffickers had to make way for daybreak as roads were closed and | :03:49. | :03:55.
properties battered by the waves. The house, it was as if somebody had | :03:56. | :04:01.
thumped it. It trembled with the force of the waves. This is the | :04:02. | :04:09.
worst I have known. I have been here for 50 years. It has never been as | :04:10. | :04:17.
bad as this. As people count the cost of the storm damage, tradesmen | :04:18. | :04:22.
here have told me that they are in demand as they are called upon to | :04:23. | :04:27.
room `` repair damaged properties. It is terrible at the moment with | :04:28. | :04:31.
the wind and the leaks we have had to fix. We have been so busy. We | :04:32. | :04:38.
have had to put polythene on top but the wind is lifting. It is chaos. | :04:39. | :04:45.
Work wise, it is quite good for us but tough on some of the people but | :04:46. | :04:50.
the damage that has been caused While the brisk wind has been a boom | :04:51. | :04:55.
for businesses, the question is when will it stop? Emily will have a full | :04:56. | :05:08.
forecast in a few minutes. More news and Guernsey's Health Minister says | :05:09. | :05:11.
he will not be resigning it `` resigning over made for bowel cancer | :05:12. | :05:17.
screening. He wrongly told the stage there was no money left for the | :05:18. | :05:21.
screening programme. In reality the development had spent the allocated | :05:22. | :05:28.
budget. `` told the States. I made an error which I regret and it was | :05:29. | :05:34.
made in good faith. It is not a resigning issue. The information was | :05:35. | :05:38.
given to me in good faith. It is not a resigning issue. If we had a | :05:39. | :05:42.
political system where every time somebody made an error, we will have | :05:43. | :05:47.
to resign, we would have an unstable government. There was an in`class `` | :05:48. | :05:54.
increase in the Channel Islands air search. This is what the year will | :05:55. | :05:57.
be remembered for when the aeroplane crash landed in Jersey in November | :05:58. | :06:01.
with the crew escaping uninjured. Plans are on track to get the | :06:02. | :06:08.
service up and running again. There will be extra slots on the Guernsey | :06:09. | :06:13.
London to Gatwick route. The airline will operate five flights on a | :06:14. | :06:21.
Saturday. It will leave Guernsey on 830 AM. `` it would leave Guernsey | :06:22. | :06:32.
at 830 AM. It is hoped the Advanchi card will speed up boarding times | :06:33. | :06:39.
and unable cheaper cards and journeys for students. They put | :06:40. | :06:42.
their student card onto the machine, place it done. The Green Knight goes | :06:43. | :06:51.
on and the ticket comes out. `` the green light comes on. These are the | :06:52. | :07:00.
replacement cards. You can only use your paper tickets at school time to | :07:01. | :07:06.
get you to school and college. They can now top the card up and use it | :07:07. | :07:11.
seven days a week. A lot of the students in further education get | :07:12. | :07:17.
queried on age at the weekends to get the student fares. With this | :07:18. | :07:23.
pass, it shows in the beholder of the ticket and are entitled to a | :07:24. | :07:27.
student there. This is also being rolled out to regular bus users | :07:28. | :07:37.
They hope the new system will mean it will speed up bus journeys. Today | :07:38. | :07:46.
is traditionally the day that we take down our Christmas tree but for | :07:47. | :07:50.
one Jersey teenager, this will have been the first time he has been able | :07:51. | :07:53.
to cope with having one in`house. Then suffers from Chronic | :07:54. | :07:57.
Granulomatous Disorder which leaves the body feeling vulnerable to | :07:58. | :08:02.
infection that a life`saving transplant has meant he was able to | :08:03. | :08:05.
celebrate the festive season like the rest of us. From birth, that has | :08:06. | :08:12.
battled a rare genetic disorders dust condition. His body couldn t | :08:13. | :08:17.
fight bacterial or fungal infections properly. Trees, dab and just had to | :08:18. | :08:23.
be avoided so this summer then underwent life`saving treatment A | :08:24. | :08:28.
bathing marrow transplant. He was captain isolation. `` a bone marrow | :08:29. | :08:33.
transplant. He was kept in an isolated room for eight weeks. It | :08:34. | :08:38.
was tough for my mum and dad to watch me being unwell everyday. I | :08:39. | :08:49.
became claustrophobic in the room. This shows him receiving the | :08:50. | :08:53.
transplant in London. It is the most effective treatment for Chronic | :08:54. | :08:57.
Granulomatous Disorder, which is so where it affects just one in 4 | :08:58. | :09:03.
million people. By having a bone marrow transplant, it replaces your | :09:04. | :09:10.
blood cells with those that you have been transplanted from. The source | :09:11. | :09:16.
of the problem in the disease relates to cells which are produced | :09:17. | :09:23.
in the bone marrow. Has a replacement marrow which will have | :09:24. | :09:28.
fully functional cells. He is expected to fully overcome the | :09:29. | :09:31.
illness and his remarkable story has hit the headlines in Jersey. He is | :09:32. | :09:35.
now looking forward to living a normal life without worrying about | :09:36. | :09:40.
keeping infections at bay. It has been a painful year. It is so good | :09:41. | :09:49.
to be out the other side and I am looking forward to 2014 and seeing | :09:50. | :09:54.
what that holds. He knows none of it would have been possible without his | :09:55. | :10:03.
bone marrow donor. He hopes he can one day meet the person that has | :10:04. | :10:06.
changed and saves his life `` saved his life. Earlier you saw the impact | :10:07. | :10:11.
the bad weather has been having in Guernsey. | :10:12. | :10:16.
Our video journalist shot these pictures at the beach at St Ouen | :10:17. | :10:21.
earlier. Now we have the weather details. | :10:22. | :10:27.
We have some strong winds with us to start the week. For two nights, the | :10:28. | :10:35.
strong winds are continuing. We have a flooding risk around the coast. We | :10:36. | :10:48.
have a high tide tonight. We have had some large waves throughout the | :10:49. | :10:55.
day. Food tomorrow, the wind starts to ease. There could be persistent | :10:56. | :10:59.
rain for the middle part of this week. We are looking at a mixture of | :11:00. | :11:03.
sunshine and showers. Lighter winds by the time you get Friday. This is | :11:04. | :11:09.
the satellite picture from earlier. The card has been sweeping around | :11:10. | :11:13.
throughout the day and it is wrapped around this large area of low | :11:14. | :11:18.
pressure. There is this low pressure which has caused a big swell. Strong | :11:19. | :11:25.
winds are adding to this. By tomorrow lunchtime, it will still be | :11:26. | :11:31.
a windy day. We have a weather friends nearby. The showers become | :11:32. | :11:35.
more prolonged for a time as we go through the afternoon. `` we have a | :11:36. | :11:43.
weather front nearby. There is uncertainty around the positioning | :11:44. | :11:49.
of the wind. We have some showers around and they could be happy with | :11:50. | :11:54.
the risk of some hail and thunder. We have gusty winds through the | :11:55. | :12:04.
night. Temperatures are no longer `` lower than nine Celsius. There is | :12:05. | :12:15.
quite a few showers but they will be easing and we will see some sunshine | :12:16. | :12:22.
for a time. Overall, a mixture through the afternoon tomorrow with | :12:23. | :12:24.
temperatures reaching 11 Celsius tomorrow. | :12:25. | :12:51.
The rest of the week, we have a mixture but more sunshine on | :12:52. | :13:00.
Thursday and Friday. BBC Radio Devon is a Jersey will have travel updates | :13:01. | :13:04.
in the morning. That is it for now. Goodbye. | :13:05. | :13:17.
And you can watch the whole story tonight on Inside Out at 7:30pm here | :13:18. | :13:25.
on BBC One. Missed hospital appointments in the | :13:26. | :13:28.
South West are costing the NHS millions of pounds. Last year alone | :13:29. | :13:31.
more than 165,000 people failed to turn up for consultations. New | :13:32. | :13:34.
reminder services are now being introduced. | :13:35. | :13:41.
Almost 500,000 people walked through these doors to be treated every | :13:42. | :13:47.
year. But not everyone turns up to their outpatient appointment. Before | :13:48. | :13:52.
a telephone reminder service was introduced, almost 8% of patients | :13:53. | :13:58.
failed to tell the hospital they couldn't attend. Brian got a | :13:59. | :14:03.
reminder for his appointment a few days ago. | :14:04. | :14:08.
I found them very good. Very often you just phone them back and confirm | :14:09. | :14:13.
the appointment and that is it, all done. | :14:14. | :14:17.
Wasted appointments are costing the NHS millions every year but there | :14:18. | :14:21.
have been big changes since it started the remainder service. | :14:22. | :14:26.
Compared now to them, 12,000 more patients are getting care than they | :14:27. | :14:34.
should. For as, in terms of results, it puts us up in the top ten for | :14:35. | :14:38.
getting patients to attend on the day. | :14:39. | :14:42.
But during the last financial year, almost 13,000 people `` 30,000 | :14:43. | :14:46.
people didn't attend. At the Royal Cornwall Hospital. | :14:47. | :15:10.
40,000 patients didn't turn up. It is now hoping that its new telephone | :15:11. | :15:14.
remainder service will reduce that figure. Dorset County Hospital is | :15:15. | :15:21.
looking to do the same. They are apparently losing ?3 million every | :15:22. | :15:26.
year. They are looking at new technology to reduce the rates even | :15:27. | :15:32.
further but the best solution, they say, would be for patients to let | :15:33. | :15:36.
them know if they cannot turn up. Time for the sport and tonight we've | :15:37. | :15:39.
got news on Torquay United's new manager and he's someone we all know | :15:40. | :15:43.
very well here, isn't he, Dave? Yes, he's 41`year`old Chris | :15:44. | :15:46.
Hargreaves, who's been announced as the successor to Alan Knill, who was | :15:47. | :15:50.
sacked four days ago. Hargreaves was first`team coach at Championship | :15:51. | :15:53.
club Bournemouth and is a regular football pundit for BBC Spotlight. | :15:54. | :15:59.
It's not the biggest surprise that Chris got the job, is it? | :16:00. | :16:07.
It isn't. He is well respected and was captain of Torquay United five | :16:08. | :16:11.
years ago when he scored the first goal in the 2009 play`off final in | :16:12. | :16:16.
League Two. How do you think he'll get on? | :16:17. | :16:30.
He has got to cut his teeth. They are taking on the bottom of the | :16:31. | :16:37.
table team. They were caught out by a late equaliser. | :16:38. | :16:40.
Who'll be assisting him at Plainmoor? | :16:41. | :16:53.
Lee Hodges, who you Mayra member has plenty of experience. It will be | :16:54. | :17:06.
interesting times ahead. Plymouth Argyle look forward to an | :17:07. | :17:09.
FA Cup replay after fighting back from two goals down at Port Vale | :17:10. | :17:18.
yesterday. Top scorer Reuben Reid started the revival early in the | :17:19. | :17:21.
second half, before 17`year`old Ben Purrington completed the comeback | :17:22. | :17:24.
with his first goal for the Pilgrims. The replay will be at Home | :17:25. | :17:28.
Park on Tuesday week with the winners facing Brighton at home. | :17:29. | :17:31.
Yeovil Town face a daunting fourth round tie at Premier League | :17:32. | :17:33.
Southampton after despatching Leyton Orient 4`0 at Huish Park. Two from | :17:34. | :17:37.
James Hayter and one each from Joel Grant and Kieffer Moore saw them | :17:38. | :17:39.
through. Exeter Chiefs have dropped to eighth | :17:40. | :17:42.
in rugby's Premiership after an agonising 19`16 defeat at London | :17:43. | :17:45.
Wasps. They led 13`3 at half`time through a Dave Lewis try and the | :17:46. | :17:48.
supplementaries from Henry Slade. But at 16`16, there was controversy | :17:49. | :17:51.
when Slade's effort was ruled out. To rub salt into the Chiefs' wounds, | :17:52. | :17:55.
Andy Goode won it for Wasps with a last minute drop goal. | :17:56. | :17:58.
In the Championship, Plymouth Albion scored the only try in their 15`14 | :17:59. | :18:01.
home defeat to Leeds through captain Rory Cushion. They'd have won it if | :18:02. | :18:07.
Declan Cusack's late drop goal had been successful. | :18:08. | :18:12.
A Taunton volleyball player has become the first British woman to | :18:13. | :18:16.
compete in one of her sport's biggest competitions, even though | :18:17. | :18:18.
the British team went out of existence after the London Olympics. | :18:19. | :18:23.
Keyra Michael has just finished her first season in Italy, playing in | :18:24. | :18:27.
the European Champions League. Here's Ollie Williams. | :18:28. | :18:34.
Welcome to the home of British volleyball which doesn't look | :18:35. | :18:40.
massively British because it isn't. You can see the beautiful city. | :18:41. | :18:47.
This is Italy, the new home of Keyra Michael, one of the few British | :18:48. | :18:53.
professional players left in the year after these historic scenes. | :18:54. | :18:58.
Within months of winning a game for the first time, the team was shut | :18:59. | :19:01.
down. The team was disbanded so there is | :19:02. | :19:18.
no longer a team. At six foot five, she has signed up | :19:19. | :19:27.
as a middle blocker for this team in Milan. They play and one of the top | :19:28. | :19:33.
competitions in the world. Ciara grew up in Somerset is the first | :19:34. | :19:39.
British player to reach this level. I remember reading a quote before | :19:40. | :19:47.
London 2012 we said, every member of Team GB has the responsibility to | :19:48. | :19:55.
inspire the nation. I would really like to think that I can inspire | :19:56. | :19:58.
kids by being here. Good for her. And at this time | :19:59. | :20:06.
tomorrow, we'll be introducing you to Torquay's new manager ` that's if | :20:07. | :20:09.
he needs any introduction, of course. Many people are now likely | :20:10. | :20:21.
to have to work into their 70s but working into old age is nothing new | :20:22. | :20:25.
for many people here in the south west. | :20:26. | :20:26.
The region already has a higher proportion of older workers than the | :20:27. | :20:29.
UK average. In fact, Spotlight's Greg Wade has been to meet a couple | :20:30. | :20:32.
who are still working in their 80s. At 91, Ethel Morley still makes this | :20:33. | :20:54.
small business sing. Started in 1975, the family`run firm | :20:55. | :20:56.
manufactured dry suits and embroidered garments such as polo | :20:57. | :21:02.
shirts. It wasn't a conscious decision to | :21:03. | :21:08.
stay at work. You just get up in the morning and go to the same place and | :21:09. | :21:14.
one day you are old. Age is really just a number. | :21:15. | :21:19.
But by the time you get to 90 it doesn't really matter too much, does | :21:20. | :21:21.
it? It doesn't matter anyway. | :21:22. | :21:24.
Their son Roger, a mere 60, thinks age isn't a barrier to employment. | :21:25. | :21:29.
In fact, quite the opposite. They've got quite a lifetime of | :21:30. | :21:32.
knowledge about garments and technical stuff so there is a wealth | :21:33. | :21:40.
of knowledge to be had from there. You have to be active, you have to | :21:41. | :21:44.
keep active and if you are not physically active, you've got to be | :21:45. | :21:48.
brain active. If you want to work, work. Especially if you need the | :21:49. | :21:53.
money. Because this business is run by its | :21:54. | :21:57.
members, they can decide when to retire. Other workers may look on in | :21:58. | :21:59.
envy. Do you think we will still be here | :22:00. | :22:16.
doing this in our 70s and 80s? I don't think they will let us! | :22:17. | :22:21.
Now, there aren't many women who'd say no to being given a diamond on | :22:22. | :22:25.
Christmas Day. But for one woman in Exmouth, her diamond came in rather | :22:26. | :22:27.
an unusual way. Yes, this particular gem didn't come | :22:28. | :22:31.
gift wrapped and involved a fair amount of work just to find. | :22:32. | :22:34.
Spotlight's Andrea Ormsby has the story. | :22:35. | :22:42.
Meets Jack, a trainee police dog. He has lived with Angie Collins for | :22:43. | :22:46.
about seven months. He is a great character, very | :22:47. | :22:52.
gentle, they do call him Gentle Jack. | :22:53. | :22:59.
No other dog has done what Jack did just before Christmas. | :23:00. | :23:05.
It was a fantastic, lovely calm morning. We were relaxing and I | :23:06. | :23:12.
popped out into the kitchen and there was my ring on the floor, | :23:13. | :23:16.
mangled. Mangled and missing the diamond. I | :23:17. | :23:24.
think, I'm not overly sure, that the ring costs the best part of ?18,000. | :23:25. | :23:30.
The husband and I emptied the entire room, which took hours, and I could | :23:31. | :23:35.
only conclude that Jack had eaten it. | :23:36. | :23:39.
So what to do? Is the vet explained, it was a | :23:40. | :23:45.
simple process of waiting and saving. By Christmas Day I had given | :23:46. | :23:53.
up and the vet gave me advice that it was very unlikely that I would | :23:54. | :23:59.
get it back. I thought this is futile and just give up but that | :24:00. | :24:04.
last wee bit of effort, the sun was shining and there it was. I just | :24:05. | :24:09.
couldn't believe it. My face must have been a picture. | :24:10. | :24:14.
Now they are making the most of Jack before he starts his as a police | :24:15. | :24:19.
dog, were stealing diamonds really would be frowned upon. | :24:20. | :24:25.
I love the innocent look on the dog's face. Let's see if the weather | :24:26. | :24:32.
is going to get any better after the horrendous storms. That way behind | :24:33. | :24:33.
you look threatening. We are starting off with strong | :24:34. | :24:42.
winds but they do use of later in the week. Otherwise we are looking | :24:43. | :24:48.
at the mixture of sunshine and showers. We do still have a weather | :24:49. | :24:56.
warning out from The Met office. There is still the risk of further | :24:57. | :25:05.
flooding. The high tide times are between 8:30pm and 10:30pm tonight. | :25:06. | :25:13.
Keep an eye on the flight line number. As we can see from these | :25:14. | :25:18.
pictures taken in Exeter, we do still have problems with flooding. | :25:19. | :25:28.
We do have some drier weather to come later on this week so the | :25:29. | :25:35.
chance is that these. To recede but many areas are still having flood | :25:36. | :25:41.
warnings. For the moment, we do have this area of cloud wrapped around a | :25:42. | :25:47.
deep area of low pressure. It is causing a large swell of big waves. | :25:48. | :25:58.
It is still quite windy but we will start to see some sunshine. This | :25:59. | :26:05.
rain should move on and the winds will be lighter by Wednesday. We | :26:06. | :26:08.
have seen some sharp showers across the region and a little bit of | :26:09. | :26:15.
thunder and hailstones. Strong and gusty winds tonight. The wind will | :26:16. | :26:29.
ease tomorrow by first thing. These are the minimum temperature | :26:30. | :26:35.
overnight. Still a few showers around which will cause problems in | :26:36. | :26:45.
Dorset and Somerset. The temperatures tomorrow are still | :26:46. | :26:46.
fairly mild for the time of year. Still some big waves for the | :26:47. | :27:16.
surfers. The wind still strong in the morning but do decrease by the | :27:17. | :27:22.
end of the day. Still a bit of a mixture in the week ahead. More | :27:23. | :27:29.
persistent rain but later winds on Wednesday. The could see a touch of | :27:30. | :27:34.
frost on Friday. We will be back with the late news | :27:35. | :27:41.
at 10:25pm so do join us for that. That is all from the Spotlight team. | :27:42. | :27:43.
Good night. TOM: # And if there's | :27:44. | :27:53.
anybody left in here # That doesn't want | :27:54. | :28:13.
to be out there... # | :28:14. | :28:17. |
