feel fresh in the breeze. More rain on Thursday night. | :00:00. | :00:08.
We will have an interesting chat with the insurers. And a police | :00:09. | :00:33.
officer who survives this tidal surge. It was very scary. There was | :00:34. | :00:43.
nothing around me apart from water. We will have a full round`up of the | :00:44. | :00:47.
impact from around our islands. Also, why aren't health authorities | :00:48. | :00:56.
teaching new mums the basics of thirst aid? And the weather this | :00:57. | :01:00.
week does not look much better. After a reasonable start tomorrow | :01:01. | :01:05.
there will be more wind and rain. More details later in the programme. | :01:06. | :01:16.
Home owners and businesses around the Channel Islands are counting the | :01:17. | :01:22.
cost of another weekend of storms. Strong winds and storms caused roads | :01:23. | :01:29.
to be closed and properties to be flooded. A flood warning is in place | :01:30. | :01:34.
tonight and in Guernsey a policewoman is recovering after | :01:35. | :01:39.
being knocked down by a wave. We have two reports for you tonight. | :01:40. | :01:46.
First, let's head over to Guernsey. The baby being rescued from her | :01:47. | :01:53.
family's rescued house. Her hero is her dad. Her home was swamped by | :01:54. | :01:59.
half a metre of water. It is only 11 months since the trees were blown | :02:00. | :02:05.
down. It will be an interesting chat with the insurers. Soon after, the | :02:06. | :02:11.
baby 's mother was freed from her house. In St Peter Port these shops | :02:12. | :02:23.
were not spared. The only defence was sandbags. If we do have a high | :02:24. | :02:31.
tide, we can put sandbags out and barricade the shop as much as | :02:32. | :02:34.
possible, but there is very little we can do to stop the tide rising. | :02:35. | :02:41.
But for those wanting to get to be shops and work, the journey was | :02:42. | :02:48.
painfully slow. As you can see, the traffic is slow`moving. In some | :02:49. | :02:52.
places it is gridlocked. It is taking people hours to get to work. | :02:53. | :02:58.
The most of the day one of the island's main roads was out of | :02:59. | :03:03.
action. Seasonal lips these may be, but the businesses and families | :03:04. | :03:05.
these all come at a cost. Oh, my goodness me! This is about | :03:06. | :03:33.
500 tonnes of rock falling. This rock for is likely to put the area | :03:34. | :03:42.
out of bounds for the next few days. Other parts of the cliff face may be | :03:43. | :03:47.
unsafe. We have closed off the beach so that it can be inspected and the | :03:48. | :03:55.
area can be made safe. The storms did not stop the rush hour this | :03:56. | :04:00.
morning. Traffic was brought to a standstill on the south coast of | :04:01. | :04:04.
Jersey. This was Beaumont on Saturday night where volunteers were | :04:05. | :04:09.
clearing up after flooding closed the road. This video showed a | :04:10. | :04:17.
policewoman being knocked off her feet. They have been over 125,0 0 | :04:18. | :04:27.
views online. It was very scary It was not until I hit the wall that I | :04:28. | :04:33.
knew where I was going. I knew where I was because I was obviously under | :04:34. | :04:37.
the water. I used my feet and hands to get to the war as well as the | :04:38. | :04:44.
left side of my body. The last few days have seen a shipping container | :04:45. | :04:51.
washed up and many buildings destroyed. This is freak weather. We | :04:52. | :05:00.
are advising people to stay away, the sea wall because some of the | :05:01. | :05:06.
ways are on 245 feet in the air Residents and business owners will | :05:07. | :05:10.
count the cost of the weekend's whether. There is still more wind | :05:11. | :05:20.
and rain on the way. We will have the latest weather forecast in a few | :05:21. | :05:25.
moments. A Jersey doctor could be struck off | :05:26. | :05:28.
after admitting a series of faults with his practise. Dr Gamal Mohamed | :05:29. | :05:32.
was asked to take an assessment of his work after concerns were raised | :05:33. | :05:35.
about his performance and his relationship with patients. The | :05:36. | :05:37.
medical practitioners tribunal service will decide what action to | :05:38. | :05:44.
take against him. There is a risk Guernsey sit which could fail at any | :05:45. | :05:50.
point. Several years ago it was estimated that it could last the | :05:51. | :05:55.
tween zero and ten years. Guernsey Water will soon be carrying out a | :05:56. | :06:01.
survey. It is how Guernsey has got rid of it sit which for decades but | :06:02. | :06:08.
the pipe here in Belle Greve Bay will not last much longer. In storm | :06:09. | :06:16.
conditions that we are experiencing at the moment, it is putting extra | :06:17. | :06:22.
pressure on the pipe. We need to be careful and we are doing everything | :06:23. | :06:24.
we can to protect this old lady before she actually burst. If the | :06:25. | :06:32.
pipe work to fail, Guernsey Water say that the sewage will have to be | :06:33. | :06:40.
pumped out onto the beach. It is not ideal, so they are trying to replace | :06:41. | :06:46.
it. Having replaced the pumping station, the replacement pipe is the | :06:47. | :06:54.
next stage of the work. The green area shown here is the ideal place | :06:55. | :07:04.
for the sewage to be discharged We need to get the sewage away and | :07:05. | :07:08.
treated to a level that is acceptable. Guernsey Water will | :07:09. | :07:15.
still have to make its case to the states, but there really is no other | :07:16. | :07:24.
option. Now, would you know what to do if your child was choking, | :07:25. | :07:30.
bleeding or unconscious? Parents in Jersey have been learning basic | :07:31. | :07:33.
first aid skills for these very situations. They have paid to do the | :07:34. | :07:38.
course because first aid is not offered as part of the antenatal | :07:39. | :07:47.
programme. One finger on the chin. Look down the body. Knowing what to | :07:48. | :07:55.
do if your baby is on conscience. These mums and dads in Jersey have | :07:56. | :07:59.
taken it upon themselves to learn first aid. They have paid for the | :08:00. | :08:06.
course. I am expecting my second child in a few weeks and I want to | :08:07. | :08:10.
make sure I can do everything I can if needs be. I worry that if she | :08:11. | :08:17.
choked or she was not reading, I would not know what to do. That is | :08:18. | :08:22.
what made me do this course. Your children are the most important | :08:23. | :08:27.
thing in your life and if something happens to them, you want to be able | :08:28. | :08:33.
to cope. It is the second time this course has been carried out on the | :08:34. | :08:41.
Sunday, treating `` teaching vital skills to parents. These are things | :08:42. | :08:50.
that could help save a life. With Georgian and infant it is about | :08:51. | :08:56.
getting them treated quickly. The trip to hospital can sometimes take | :08:57. | :09:03.
too long. Not only do these deals help save a life, it enables parents | :09:04. | :09:07.
to know whether or not hospital treatment is needed. In the UK 0% | :09:08. | :09:14.
of ambulance journeys are not needed. It is difficult to get the | :09:15. | :09:18.
same sort of diggers in Jersey, but there must be a proportion that can | :09:19. | :09:24.
be managed at home. I think at least one or two cases a day of small | :09:25. | :09:27.
children that we see can be managed at home. First aid is not taught to | :09:28. | :09:33.
those expecting food the hospital's antenatal programmes. It is | :09:34. | :09:40.
important for parents to know what to do when the situation | :09:41. | :09:48.
necessitates. David, are we over the worst of the weather? We are for | :09:49. | :09:53.
tonight and tomorrow, but there is more deep pressure heading our way. | :09:54. | :10:01.
The tyres will not be as high. We have moved off the really high | :10:02. | :10:08.
tides. The is still reign in the forecast, but it is a quieter day. | :10:09. | :10:15.
It will be a bright start. Apart from a few showers, it should be | :10:16. | :10:27.
mainly dry. The low pressure is moving towards ours quickly and it | :10:28. | :10:30.
is getting deeper and deeper. Why the time it gets to the western end | :10:31. | :10:34.
of the English Channel, it will be very deep. Expect another spell of | :10:35. | :10:41.
stormy weather from tomorrow evening. The winds will be from the | :10:42. | :10:53.
South East. Overnight tonight, any rain will fade away. It will turn | :10:54. | :10:57.
colder as well with temperatures dropping to four or five degrees. A | :10:58. | :11:05.
cold but bright start tomorrow. We will have some sunshine. Through the | :11:06. | :11:10.
day the cloud will increase them by the end of the afternoon, generally | :11:11. | :11:14.
rather cloudy conditions. The winds will strengthen and it will become a | :11:15. | :11:21.
bit of a worry. Here are the coastal waters: | :11:22. | :11:28.
surfing conditions will be quite choppy. We are concerned about heavy | :11:29. | :11:50.
rain and those south`westerly gales. That is it from me. There will be | :11:51. | :11:54.
more photographs and video footage from the weekend on our Facebook | :11:55. | :11:56.
page. That is it for now. Goodbye. managers, clinical staff, patients | :11:57. | :12:08.
and service users. Families living on a housing estate | :12:09. | :12:11.
are worried their homes could fall twenty feet down a bank on to a row | :12:12. | :12:16.
of houses below. Their back gardens have dropped after a landslip more | :12:17. | :12:19.
than a year ago, and recent heavy rain has made the situation worse. | :12:20. | :12:25.
Spotlight's Chris Lyddon reports. This garden in Ottery St Mary is | :12:26. | :12:32.
teetering on the edge. A void has opened up under this decking. | :12:33. | :12:36.
The whole hillside has sunken down, but also pushed out as well. | :12:37. | :12:41.
So it's all gone that way and down that way ` about 20 feet or so? | :12:42. | :12:45.
Absolutely. It's continually getting worse with all the rain that we | :12:46. | :12:49.
continue to have. In the winter, you get heavy continual rain. In the | :12:50. | :12:52.
summer, you get heavy downpours. Both of which have contributed to | :12:53. | :12:56.
where we are today. The landslip happened over a year | :12:57. | :12:59.
ago, and more debris slips every time it rains. Three insurance | :13:00. | :13:03.
companies are involved, but no one will admit liability. It's the same | :13:04. | :13:08.
situation for neighbour Sally. She lives here with her husband and | :13:09. | :13:13.
young family. When it rains, I'm lying in bed, and | :13:14. | :13:18.
every noise I hear, I think, are we going to have to evacuate? We have a | :13:19. | :13:24.
bit of an evacuation plan. My husband will grab my daughter, and | :13:25. | :13:27.
I'll grab Robert, and we'll go. I'm kind of banking on the hope that it | :13:28. | :13:31.
will make so much noise that, if the bank goes first, we've got time to | :13:32. | :13:38.
get outside safely. East Devon District Council told us | :13:39. | :13:42.
it was aware of the problem, but said it was unclear whether it had | :13:43. | :13:45.
the power to intervene. It's seeking legal advice. | :13:46. | :13:54.
Time for the sport and Dave's been reflecting on a certain Cornishman's | :13:55. | :13:59.
debut for the England rugby team. Jack Knowles's England debut ended | :14:00. | :14:02.
in a dramatic 26`24 defeat in France, in the six Nations opener. | :14:03. | :14:07.
But the 20`year`old didn't let himself down, in what was the | :14:08. | :14:10.
toughest possible start to an international career. Former rugby | :14:11. | :14:14.
professional Andy Burkett joins me this evening. How do you think Jack | :14:15. | :14:18.
performed? His first 15 minutes of | :14:19. | :14:21.
international rugby was a pretty torrid affair. He couldn't have got | :14:22. | :14:26.
off to a worse start. Right from the kick`off, the forwards made a bit of | :14:27. | :14:30.
a mess of this, and the ball somehow came through to Jack, who knocked on | :14:31. | :14:34.
with his first touch. That error was compounded with the French going on | :14:35. | :14:37.
to score 30 seconds later. But he came back fighting, and he had two | :14:38. | :14:41.
ways he could have gone ` he could have gone into his shell, but he | :14:42. | :14:45.
kept on fighting. Here he is carrying the ball, he got driven | :14:46. | :14:48.
backwards. He must have been thinking, this international rugby | :14:49. | :14:51.
is a different sport! But he's made of stern stuff. He also made the | :14:52. | :14:55.
most yards of any of the England players by the end. This tackle on | :14:56. | :14:59.
Picamoles was the pick of the bunch. There was no getting through him ` | :15:00. | :15:02.
defensively, he's very strong. Do you think Jack earned himself a | :15:03. | :15:06.
place in the starting line`up for next Saturday's international | :15:07. | :15:08.
against Scotland? I think he deserves another go. He | :15:09. | :15:12.
did some good things in that match on Saturday. He had some nervy | :15:13. | :15:16.
moments, but all in all, he did well for himself. | :15:17. | :15:20.
Let's turn to Exeter Chiefs, and they've qualified last four for the | :15:21. | :15:23.
semifinals of the IV Cup, or the Anglo`Welsh Cup. They'll play Bath | :15:24. | :15:26.
away, after a handsome win at Worcester Warriors. | :15:27. | :15:32.
Worcester didn't put up much of a fight. Tom James scored the first of | :15:33. | :15:36.
the tries at the start. But they probably didn't expect to get | :15:37. | :15:39.
through to the semifinals, going into the weekend's matters. It was | :15:40. | :15:45.
only Sale getting pipped by the Ospreys that set that up. Quick | :15:46. | :15:48.
feet, sending Gareth Steenson under the post. He won't get much easier | :15:49. | :15:51.
conversion than that. It's good to see Hayden Thomas back out there. He | :15:52. | :15:55.
scored two in the second half. The final is at Sandy Park, so should | :15:56. | :15:58.
they get through against Bath that'll be something to look for | :15:59. | :16:00.
two. Let's have a quick look at the | :16:01. | :16:04.
championship table. A good win for Plymouth Albion, but a draw for | :16:05. | :16:07.
Cornish Pirates at home to Ealing. If you were putting money on it this | :16:08. | :16:11.
weekend, you'd have lost the lot. A surprising win against London Welsh, | :16:12. | :16:14.
but well done. The Pirates probably expected a bit more out of that game | :16:15. | :16:17.
at Ealing. Lovely, Andy, thanks very much your | :16:18. | :16:19.
company. Let's continue with football. Yeovil | :16:20. | :16:24.
Town couldn't produce a championship double over Nottingham Forest. After | :16:25. | :16:27.
beating them 3`1 last October, they went down by the same score | :16:28. | :16:31.
yesterday. An own goal by Byron Webster put Forest on their way. | :16:32. | :16:34.
They went behind again after the interval, with the third goal coming | :16:35. | :16:37.
in the final minute to keep Town rock bottom of the championship | :16:38. | :16:46.
table. In league two, only Torquay United | :16:47. | :16:49.
came away victorious, as Chris Hargreaves made it two wins from | :16:50. | :16:52.
three as their new manager. Billy Bowden was the hero, with the only | :16:53. | :16:56.
goal in the first half against Portsmouth. Despite winning, United | :16:57. | :16:58.
remain in the bottom two places. Plymouth Argyle faced defeat at home | :16:59. | :17:02.
to Mansfield Town, but in the sixth minute of added time Alessandra | :17:03. | :17:05.
earned them a 1`all draw. Exeter city are only five points away from | :17:06. | :17:08.
danger, after their 1`all draw against Burton Albion. Their own | :17:09. | :17:11.
goal rendered that advantage immediately afterwards. | :17:12. | :17:23.
Finally, Plymouth diver Tom Daley has won his first title of the | :17:24. | :17:26.
season, with victory at the ten metre platform at the National cup | :17:27. | :17:29.
in Southend. He received 9.5s for his first 3.5 somersaults with tuck. | :17:30. | :17:44.
Exeter has one of the oldest synagogues in the country and this | :17:45. | :17:48.
year it celebrates its 250th anniversary. In tonight's Inside Out | :17:49. | :17:52.
programme, BBC Radio Devon presenter Judi Spiers delves into her own | :17:53. | :17:56.
background to bring us the story of Exeter's Jewish community including | :17:57. | :17:58.
a rare glimpse inside it's synagogue. Judi joins me now. | :17:59. | :18:13.
What did you discover about the history of the synagogue? | :18:14. | :18:21.
Everything. I had no idea there was a Jewish community from 1177. That's | :18:22. | :18:26.
the synagogue was a year younger than our synagogue. I learned | :18:27. | :18:34.
everything about it. It's become very popular recently, | :18:35. | :18:39.
hasn't it? It's a very inclusive synagogue now. | :18:40. | :18:47.
This is Richard, showing us around the Tories. Those are our law. `` | :18:48. | :19:09.
Torahs. Some of those scrolls go back to 1400, so you mustn't touch | :19:10. | :19:15.
them with your greasy fingers. You had quite a good chat to Frank | :19:16. | :19:23.
during programme? He's a great historian. He took us | :19:24. | :19:37.
to the archives. I may not have long hair now, but | :19:38. | :19:41.
people back then thought of me as a bit of a hippy. A few of us, who | :19:42. | :19:46.
were sort of hippies, were settling down and having families. We got | :19:47. | :19:48.
involved in the synagogue, started having services, started having | :19:49. | :19:51.
parties, started having a sense of community again. That's what has | :19:52. | :19:54.
continued. We also tried to be inclusive, to welcome everybody. | :19:55. | :19:57.
You mentioned that you grew up going to the synagogue in Plymouth ` how | :19:58. | :20:04.
does it differ? The Plymouth community is more | :20:05. | :20:08.
orthodox. They want to keep it that way, whereas Exeter wants to be more | :20:09. | :20:12.
inclusive. They have history meetings, and teach Yiddish. They | :20:13. | :20:17.
will take non`Jewish people will stop lots of schools visit, and it's | :20:18. | :20:22.
a lot more proactive. They will have traditional services as well, but | :20:23. | :20:26.
they will also have more inclusive services. It's so successful, and so | :20:27. | :20:35.
many people want to go to it, that at times you may have to book a | :20:36. | :20:43.
seat! And a fascinating view two nights of | :20:44. | :20:57.
the synagogue's history. There were a lot of skilled men who | :20:58. | :21:03.
came back to Exeter, including Ezequiel, who trained as a | :21:04. | :21:10.
silversmith. There was Alexander, who was an optician. In the 20th | :21:11. | :21:17.
century, there was Herschel Smith who patented the contraceptive pill. | :21:18. | :21:21.
Quite an interesting bunch of people our Jewish community. | :21:22. | :21:27.
Fascinating. Thank you very much Judi. And you can find out more on | :21:28. | :21:31.
Inside Out tonight at 7.30 on BBC One. | :21:32. | :21:34.
A cinema, which in its heyday counted Agatha Christie as one of | :21:35. | :21:37.
its regular visitors, could reopen fourteen years after final end | :21:38. | :21:40.
credits. The Paignton Picture House was reputedly the oldest | :21:41. | :21:42.
purpose`built cinema in Western Europe. Now, as John Ayres reports, | :21:43. | :21:45.
there are plans for the projectors to roll once again. | :21:46. | :21:54.
Back in its day, the painting picture house represented a small | :21:55. | :21:59.
piece of history. In 1999, the number of cinemagoers was falling, | :22:00. | :22:04.
and a multiplex was on its way. They want to turn it into an office. The | :22:05. | :22:11.
cinema was closed, but the council stood in the way. The railways had a | :22:12. | :22:18.
change of heart, and this little cinema is on its way back. | :22:19. | :22:25.
The trust has come at the right time to be able to work with everything | :22:26. | :22:30.
this cinema has going for it. It has a lot of support in the community. | :22:31. | :22:34.
This is something that everybody who needs to be behind it is behind. | :22:35. | :22:40.
I trust has been set up to bring the cinema back to life. Today, they | :22:41. | :22:47.
took the first looked at the projector, which in its day was in | :22:48. | :22:53.
immaculate condition. It needs a lot of work, but this is | :22:54. | :22:58.
brilliant news, that we are actually moving with it again. There have | :22:59. | :23:02.
been so many attempts by good people, genuinely interested in the | :23:03. | :23:07.
place. But it looks like everything is resolved now. | :23:08. | :23:13.
The cinema was a regular haunt of Agatha Christie. It will emphasise | :23:14. | :23:20.
its heritage when it reopens. I'm sure it will be unrivalled in | :23:21. | :23:24.
terms of the experience. It'll be quite different to going down to | :23:25. | :23:28.
local multiplex. This will be living history. | :23:29. | :23:35.
The trust hopes to restore the cinema to how it was at its peak. It | :23:36. | :23:39.
is expected to take between three and five years. | :23:40. | :23:46.
A surfer from Devon has survived a fall on a huge wave caused by a | :23:47. | :23:50.
storm in Portugal. Andrew Cotton, a plumber from Braunton, was at Saint | :23:51. | :23:52.
Nazare when these dramatic pictures were taken. He told Spotlight the | :23:53. | :23:56.
fall was pretty bad, but he was using a new inflatable vest which | :23:57. | :24:00.
meant he shot up safely to the surface. | :24:01. | :24:13.
We've got a few big waves of our own, around our coastline. Let's get | :24:14. | :24:14.
the weather. I wish I could give you a spell of | :24:15. | :24:24.
quiet and dry weather, though the wind is due East tonight. The high | :24:25. | :24:32.
tides are beginning to go down, so each day is less of a high tide. For | :24:33. | :24:39.
this week, it stays unsettled, with more rain and gale force winds. This | :24:40. | :24:47.
time tomorrow, we'll have another area of low pressure, and another is | :24:48. | :24:52.
well wet weather. Not only the rain, which could amount to 25 | :24:53. | :24:56.
millimetres, but also the strength of wind. It could be between 60 and | :24:57. | :25:04.
80 mph. The reason is an area of low pressure. It seems like a long way | :25:05. | :25:12.
from us, but it's moving pretty fast. As it moves, it's developed | :25:13. | :25:17.
and gets deeper. You can see how tightly packed those isobars are. | :25:18. | :25:22.
The whole centre of that area of low pressure moves across the Highland | :25:23. | :25:27.
overnight and into Wednesday. Wednesday will be a windy day for | :25:28. | :25:30.
all of us. The highest strength of wind will be during the darkest | :25:31. | :25:36.
hours. The rain that we have seen today has been quite heavy in | :25:37. | :25:40.
places. It is beginning to ease and move away from us this evening. | :25:41. | :25:44.
Later tonight, it will turn much colder, and will have a drop in | :25:45. | :25:49.
temperatures. A few showers dotted around, but it is mainly dry | :25:50. | :25:54.
overnight. The wind is very different direction ` mainly from | :25:55. | :25:58.
the South West tomorrow. Overnight, temperatures of two or three | :25:59. | :26:02.
degrees. Really a touch of frost if we get enough shelter. But most of | :26:03. | :26:07.
us will wake up to three or four degrees above freezing. By the time | :26:08. | :26:12.
we get to the end of the afternoon, rain coming in. Some of this rain | :26:13. | :26:17.
could be heavy, but noted the strength of wind. We could have | :26:18. | :26:25.
winds up and around 50 to 60 mph. Temperatures tomorrow of eight or | :26:26. | :26:30.
nine degrees. It won't feel that warm, especially in the winter. For | :26:31. | :26:35.
the Isles of Scilly, some of the strongest gusts of wind. We could | :26:36. | :26:42.
easily see 70 mph, maybe even 80. Some very big seas indeed. Important | :26:43. | :26:48.
times of high water. Let's look at tomorrow. With Penzance and | :26:49. | :26:56.
Plymouth. The waves are likely to be very stormy. Big waves throughout | :26:57. | :27:14.
the day. Six or ten feet and messy. Force eight or nine, possibly to | :27:15. | :27:21.
storm force ten West Cornwall. Some very strong winds indeed. Wednesday | :27:22. | :27:26.
will be a very blustery day, with plenty of showers. Quieter on | :27:27. | :27:29.
Thursday, and initially quite on Friday. `` quieter on Friday. | :27:30. | :27:38.
Why are you staring at me? Just wonder how things grow and grow | :27:39. | :28:00.
Why are you staring at me? Just wonder how things grow and grow | :28:01. | :28:09.
Yeah, well, mummies and daddies do argue sometimes. | :28:10. | :28:12.
Did you hear any other words? Pillock and another word. | :28:13. | :28:17.
Can you please stop doing this OK, you can put me down. | :28:18. | :28:25. |
