Good evening. Guernsey authorities There is also a first look | :00:00. | :00:10.
Good evening. Guernsey authorities have been tackling widespread | :00:11. | :00:15.
flooding on the island tonight. Around 60 roads were reported as | :00:16. | :00:19.
flooded, including here at Route Du Camp Du Roi. Excessive rainfall is | :00:20. | :00:23.
also causing problems in parts of Alderney. Meanwhile strong winds | :00:24. | :00:25.
have hampered clear`up operations of existing damage across the Channel | :00:26. | :00:29.
Islands. Guernsey's environment department admits it's already | :00:30. | :00:32.
almost completely spent its budget for maintaining coastal defences. | :00:33. | :00:38.
Mike Wilkins reports. A lower tide, but one that's still | :00:39. | :00:42.
wreaking havoc. Today this part of Guernsey's east coast was given very | :00:43. | :00:45.
little time to recover as the waves smashed in once again. | :00:46. | :00:54.
Behind to me the castle breakwater has been damaged. Huge rocks have | :00:55. | :01:00.
been dislodged, and it is too early to say what it will cost to repair, | :01:01. | :01:04.
but this is crucial to the protection of Saint Peter bought. | :01:05. | :01:07.
Across the island teams have been working against the elements to | :01:08. | :01:11.
repair the damage. We can't actually do much when the tide is coming | :01:12. | :01:16.
over, so we have between tides to do as much as we can. Some places we | :01:17. | :01:20.
had to leave because they were too dangerous to get to. | :01:21. | :01:23.
As we start just the second month of the year, the environment | :01:24. | :01:25.
department's maintenance budget has almost been spent already. The | :01:26. | :01:34.
budget for the sea walls and the coastal defences will be gone | :01:35. | :01:37.
without question, but that is not the end of the world. | :01:38. | :01:40.
Repairing all this will cost a lot of money, and the environment | :01:41. | :01:43.
department is going to have to find more and re`prioritise its plans to | :01:44. | :01:46.
ensure the island remains protected from future storms. | :01:47. | :01:52.
As the unlikely begins to happen at Castle Cornet, some reassuring news | :01:53. | :01:56.
for insurance customers. Some companies say the storm damage won't | :01:57. | :02:03.
have a huge effect on premiums. The number of claims we have had | :02:04. | :02:09.
notified is far more biased to Guernsey than jersey, and | :02:10. | :02:12.
specifically localised to a certain area. I don't see that storm and the | :02:13. | :02:18.
floods that have occurred over the last few days will have a huge | :02:19. | :02:20.
effect on premiums, no. For people that have been affected | :02:21. | :02:24.
by storm damage, the advice is to speak to your insurance company as | :02:25. | :02:25.
soon as possible. Well, with more weather warnings on | :02:26. | :02:32.
the way, our reporter Edward Sault has been to Jersey's Transport and | :02:33. | :02:35.
Technical Services depot to speak to minister Kevin Lewis. | :02:36. | :02:45.
You join me at a wet and blustery transport and technical services | :02:46. | :02:48.
depot in Jersey. This is where all the road sweepers for the island are | :02:49. | :02:54.
kept. If you come with me, you can see for yourself. Here are two that | :02:55. | :02:59.
have been heavily involved in the clean`up this week, and they are | :03:00. | :03:03.
undergoing a clean`up themselves, ready for more bad weather. Kevin | :03:04. | :03:09.
Lewis, how bad has the weather been in your experience? I have never | :03:10. | :03:19.
known it this bad. So storm of the century as far as I'm concerned | :03:20. | :03:24.
We're looking at upwards of ?20 ,000 a total cost of the clean`up will | :03:25. | :03:28.
stop but there is more to come. We have a red warning tonight, we are | :03:29. | :03:33.
anticipating trees to come down roof tiles to come off. We advise | :03:34. | :03:37.
anyone if they have something in their garden that can blow around, | :03:38. | :03:41.
please secure it and batten down the hatches. What are other problems | :03:42. | :03:47.
that you're envisaging? We have several teams on stand`by, the | :03:48. | :03:50.
forestry team on stand`by on the sweepers you have mentioned. They | :03:51. | :03:56.
can clear seaweed and debris prior to the roads being opened. A lot of | :03:57. | :04:00.
it has to be done by hand because seaweed is too heavy. We are | :04:01. | :04:06.
prepared. Debbie G, thank you. The team here are prepared for more | :04:07. | :04:09.
bad weather over the course of the next few days. This afternoon, | :04:10. | :04:20.
Jersey Met did issue another weather warning. The clean`up will continue. | :04:21. | :04:23.
The head of Jersey's Fishermen's Association says this winter's been | :04:24. | :04:28.
one of the worst for local fishermen in 35 years. And it's starting to | :04:29. | :04:31.
have an affect on local fish supplies, as Jen Smith found out. | :04:32. | :04:35.
Get them while you can. Vicky Border's been selling fish in Jersey | :04:36. | :04:41.
at this family business for more than 15 years. She says she still | :04:42. | :04:47.
has plenty to fill the shelves now, but by the weekend shellfish will be | :04:48. | :04:54.
gone. Crab and lobster will be the main problem, and when that has run | :04:55. | :04:59.
out, it has run out. We will just have to hope that there is light at | :05:00. | :05:03.
the end of the tunnel, and the fishermen can get back out, because | :05:04. | :05:06.
they are the guys I feel sorry for. Vicky's shop relies on the catch | :05:07. | :05:09.
local fishermen bring in. But the boats have been stuck in the harbour | :05:10. | :05:13.
since December, so there's little to go around. We are running into the | :05:14. | :05:18.
sixth week since fishermen have really had any income at all. We can | :05:19. | :05:25.
suffer a couple of weeks, but this is creating real difficulty, | :05:26. | :05:28.
particularly for young fishermen, to have no income at all. | :05:29. | :05:32.
The slump in local fish is having a knock`on affect from fishermen's | :05:33. | :05:37.
pockets to restaurant plates. Lobster, crab, it is all imported at | :05:38. | :05:43.
the moment. Scallops, and a lot of the fish as well, the wet fish. A | :05:44. | :05:49.
bit comes from the mainland anyway, so we are managing in that respect, | :05:50. | :05:55.
but local has been pretty bad for local fish. Vicky's optimistic | :05:56. | :05:57.
there'll be a break in the weather soon, so Jersey's fishermen can get | :05:58. | :06:00.
back to sea. But with more bad weather on the way | :06:01. | :06:04.
for the weekend, these nets may be ashore for a while to come. | :06:05. | :06:09.
There are weather warnings still in place for flooding in some low`lying | :06:10. | :06:14.
areas across the Channel Islands early tomorrow morning. BBC Radio | :06:15. | :06:18.
Guernsey and BBC Radio Jersey are on air from 6am with all the details. | :06:19. | :06:23.
David is here next with our latest forecast. But from me, good night. | :06:24. | :06:29.
Good evening. Good news and bad news. The good news is that we | :06:30. | :06:36.
should have a reasonable day tomorrow, even with some morning | :06:37. | :06:40.
sunshine. The bad news is the wind will pick up later in the day, and | :06:41. | :06:44.
overnight we will have more wind and rain turning up, and also strong | :06:45. | :06:48.
winds overnight tonight. They'd could be damaging winds. Gusts of up | :06:49. | :06:58.
to 70 mph, so really strong. They use through the day, but for a short | :06:59. | :07:06.
while, pretty lively. They are picking up quite swiftly, | :07:07. | :07:14.
temperatures, 607 Celsius. A few passing showers, thick cloud | :07:15. | :07:20.
approaching from the West, eight or nine Celsius the top temperature, | :07:21. | :07:22.
and generally lighter winds than we have been used to. Saturday and | :07:23. | :07:27.
Sunday, the wind and the rain just keeps on coming. | :07:28. | :07:31.
settled into Sunday. From us, good night. Here is | :07:32. | :07:37.
Hello. I think the impact of this wet weather could be felt more | :07:38. | :07:44.
widely as time goes on, even in areas which have been unscathed up | :07:45. | :07:50.
until now. For now, the focus is on southern England. We have amber | :07:51. | :07:52.
weather warnings right through until Saturday. We have another storm | :07:53. | :07:55.
heading | :07:56. | :07:56. |
