Good evening. Condor Ferries has That's all from us.

:00:09.:00:11.

Good evening. Condor Ferries has cancelled ferries to and from St

:00:12.:00:14.

Malo for a second day due to industrial action. French crew are

:00:15.:00:17.

employed on contracts under Guernsey law. And they want that to change,

:00:18.:00:19.

as Edward Sault reports. This afternoon, Condor's sailing

:00:20.:00:32.

from Jersey to Guernsey and the UK, but for anyone wanting to sail south

:00:33.:00:35.

to France they'd be disappointed. The crew of the Condor Rapide went

:00:36.:00:39.

on strike in St Malo yesterday, and say they will stay out until they

:00:40.:00:42.

get better pay and conditions. They want their terms to match the French

:00:43.:00:46.

system rather than Guernsey's, where Condor is based.

:00:47.:00:55.

We want to propose to them a provision in the contract that would

:00:56.:01:06.

say that they operate between the UK and France if there is agreement

:01:07.:01:16.

that covers both. It is important that we can be part of the

:01:17.:01:19.

resolution of the conflict. Condor say this action has come as a

:01:20.:01:22.

surprise and have apologised to customers. Bosses say they've got

:01:23.:01:25.

representatives on board the Rapide trying to negotiate a solution with

:01:26.:01:31.

the crew. It would be inappropriate for us to come up with a solution

:01:32.:01:35.

that is not right just for our colleagues, but also make sure the

:01:36.:01:39.

company is viable and to make sure that islanders are protected. The

:01:40.:01:42.

last thing we want to do is have some pressure on fares. We want to

:01:43.:01:47.

make sure that everything we do is the right solution for everybody.

:01:48.:01:50.

Pressure has also been mounting on Guernsey and Jersey's governments to

:01:51.:01:58.

intervene. We hear the Jersey are considering it a night. It's not yet

:01:59.:02:03.

clear how long this dispute will last, but all sailings to St Malo

:02:04.:02:06.

have been cancelled tomorrow. Condor say it's due to adverse weather

:02:07.:02:09.

conditions and nothing to do with the ongoing strike action.

:02:10.:02:20.

There's growing concern about the level of personal debt in Jersey,

:02:21.:02:25.

amid claims the government is ignoring the issue. The island's

:02:26.:02:28.

Citizens Advice Bureau has launched a survey to find out the real scale

:02:29.:02:31.

of the problem. Emma Chambers reports. The stresses and strains

:02:32.:02:34.

debt can bring, causing many people to bury their heads in the sand

:02:35.:02:38.

rather than talking about it. And that's why this survey has been

:02:39.:02:41.

launched. It's been sent out to 4,000 randomly chosen households to

:02:42.:02:44.

find out the state of our personal finances. You don't put your name on

:02:45.:02:48.

it, so it's hoped this anonymity will encourage people to be open

:02:49.:02:55.

about debt worries. It is, I think, a far wider problem, particularly in

:02:56.:02:59.

relation to loans and credit cards. I think the less affluent people

:03:00.:03:03.

there's a growing loan crisis as well. To find out how serious the

:03:04.:03:08.

issue is in the island, Jersey's Consumer Council has teamed up with

:03:09.:03:11.

two local charities that help those with money troubles. This is

:03:12.:03:16.

probably the first time we have worked together in such a concerted

:03:17.:03:21.

way. What we hope is that when we get the survey results, we can drive

:03:22.:03:24.

through the results and get something meaningful out the back of

:03:25.:03:29.

them, and in a way we can focus better on what we are doing and

:03:30.:03:31.

provide a service that is tailored to the needs of the community. One

:03:32.:03:36.

of those services will educate people how to manage their spending.

:03:37.:03:41.

If we can run workshops with people and discuss with them so people

:03:42.:03:46.

don't bury their heads in their sands, and there isn't a stigma

:03:47.:03:52.

attached and we can treat it like a more open subject. It's hoped the

:03:53.:03:55.

survey findings will help people with money problems find a brighter

:03:56.:03:56.

future. Guernsey has already had its wettest

:03:57.:04:07.

February in 35 years. Heavy rainfall led to widespread flooding last

:04:08.:04:10.

night, and the local wildlife is suffering too. Mike Wilkins reports

:04:11.:04:13.

After a night where dozens of Guernsey's roads were flooded, this

:04:14.:04:16.

morning some were still submerged. After a night where dozens

:04:17.:04:24.

I am close to this reservoir, and behind me you can see where the road

:04:25.:04:31.

is still flooded and impassable It's not just the rows that have had

:04:32.:04:35.

a soaking. Water has knocked this church and pre`school out of action

:04:36.:04:41.

for weeks. It's one of those acts of God, if you like, but of course

:04:42.:04:46.

this main hall is a day school for the little bears, and they have had

:04:47.:04:51.

to make alternative arrangements elsewhere. It's like an evacuation.

:04:52.:04:58.

And just down the road another kind of damage was being surveyed, the

:04:59.:05:06.

damage to our wildlife. It's a major concern. We can already say the

:05:07.:05:10.

birds like cormorants, Shanks and maybe a few other species will have

:05:11.:05:15.

already decided that they can't breed this year `` shags. It's only

:05:16.:05:21.

February but that decision will be made for them. They were built to

:05:22.:05:25.

get into condition to last the breeding season, so survival becomes

:05:26.:05:28.

a priority rather than breeding Over at the animal shelter,

:05:29.:05:31.

guillemots are among some of the animals brought in during the

:05:32.:05:33.

storms, including this pigeon called Droopy, who has a broken wing. If

:05:34.:05:41.

anybody does come across an injured animal in Guernsey, Corless at the

:05:42.:05:47.

shelter, or you can pop to the shelter `` call us. There is always

:05:48.:05:51.

somebody here 24 hours per day, seven days a week, and in a vehicle

:05:52.:05:54.

ready to respond. There has been some good news on the wildlife

:05:55.:06:00.

front. Earlier in the week this young dolphin was stranded at

:06:01.:06:03.

Pembroke Bay. Well today I spotted him swimming around Beaucette

:06:04.:06:06.

Marina, where I believe there's a decent supply of fish to keep him

:06:07.:06:09.

going. That's it from me. I'm back on Monday at 6:30pm. Now here's

:06:10.:06:13.

David Braine with news of a wet and windy weekend of weather. Goodnight.

:06:14.:06:19.

Another big storm is heading across the UK over the next 24 hours. We

:06:20.:06:26.

are quite a way away from it, the centre but it will still be windy

:06:27.:06:31.

and this weekend we will continue to see blustery showers, and possible

:06:32.:06:36.

gusts of wind up to 70 mph through Saturday afternoon. The rain we have

:06:37.:06:39.

at the moment is accompanied by gale force southerly winds. It will drop

:06:40.:06:44.

a little bit but it will be a blustery night, and overnight,

:06:45.:06:48.

temperatures down to six degrees. Showers around and a steady increase

:06:49.:06:52.

in the strength of the wind, severe gale force winds are possible, and

:06:53.:06:57.

nine degrees is the top temperature but feeling colder because of the

:06:58.:07:00.

strength of the wind. The forecast as we move into Sunday is that bit

:07:01.:07:06.

quieter. We still expect to see some sharp downpours. A cold day on

:07:07.:07:09.

Sunday with a few hail showers thrown in as well. Quiet on Monday,

:07:10.:07:14.

and yet another big area of low pressure turning up on Tuesday. It's

:07:15.:07:17.

mainly Monday night and Tuesday that we start to see the winds increasing

:07:18.:07:22.

and also some wet weather returning to the island. A lot happening this

:07:23.:07:29.

weekend, but the main strength of wind will be through the day

:07:30.:07:36.

Hello again. Nelson's flag ship HMS victory, was launched in 1765 and

:07:37.:07:44.

you can still see it today in Portsmouth Harbour. But through the

:07:45.:07:48.

whole of that history, you will struggle to find a wetter winter

:07:49.:07:51.

than this one across southern England. Scotland has already been

:07:52.:07:56.

in the record books. Their December was the wettest since standardised

:07:57.:08:01.

records began about 100 years ago. There's plenty more where that came

:08:02.:08:05.

from. Another storm is knocking on the door and will affect the whole

:08:06.:08:10.

of Western Europe, steaming in from the Atlantic. Giving us a steady

:08:11.:08:13.

stream of rain in most

:08:14.:08:14.
