Good evening. Once again the Channel millimetres of rain in | :00:00. | :00:10.
Good evening. Once again the Channel Islands have been battered by strong | :00:11. | :00:14.
winds and high tides tonight. Jersey's Met office issued a severe | :00:15. | :00:17.
weather warning earlier. This evening, some flights into and out | :00:18. | :00:20.
of Alderney, Guernsey and Jersey airport were cancelled because of | :00:21. | :00:24.
the high winds. Roads were closed and trees came down. Louise Walter | :00:25. | :00:37.
reports. It contains some flashing images. Another night, same old | :00:38. | :00:41.
weather. This was the scene along Jersey's Victoria Avenue earlier as | :00:42. | :00:44.
waves crashed over the sea wall throwing debris with it. The dual | :00:45. | :00:48.
carriageway was closed in both directions at rush hour leading to | :00:49. | :00:53.
long tailbacks. In Guernsey Bulwer Avenue was shut due to flooding at | :00:54. | :00:56.
Richmond Corner and this was the scene on the Perelle coast road as | :00:57. | :01:00.
debris came over the sea wall in force nine winds. Tonight Jersey Met | :01:01. | :01:09.
say gusts of up to 67 miles an hour were recorded at Alderney airport | :01:10. | :01:13.
and 73 miles an hour at Jersey's St Helier harbour. Forecasters say the | :01:14. | :01:16.
strength of the wind is now decreasing, but yet more bad weather | :01:17. | :01:19.
is expected over the next few days. This was the scene in Guernsey | :01:20. | :01:26.
assured while ago. Bull were Avenue was shut as part of the bad | :01:27. | :01:32.
weather. Our reporter gave us this update. It is coming down now, but | :01:33. | :01:40.
earlier on the 70 miles an hour winds created huge waves, leaving | :01:41. | :01:44.
debris scattered across the coast road. It was the same on the East | :01:45. | :01:50.
Coast. Elsewhere, the gale force winds brought down trees inland | :01:51. | :01:55.
blocking roads and stopped planes flying from the airport. The police | :01:56. | :02:00.
have set up dedicated weather numbers. | :02:01. | :02:13.
New figures have revealed that 0% of the cases of the sexual infection | :02:14. | :02:21.
chlamydia go undetected in Guernsey. It has prompted calls for a | :02:22. | :02:26.
dedicated screening `` screening on the island. They either health | :02:27. | :02:33.
conditions which few talk openly about, sexually transmitted | :02:34. | :02:37.
infections. Here at this sexual health clinic in Guernsey there is | :02:38. | :02:42.
one infection on the rise. The number of cases of chlamydia | :02:43. | :02:45.
diagnosed here is at its highest for more than half a decade. Guernsey's | :02:46. | :02:50.
and your health report says it is likely that up to 10% of sexually | :02:51. | :02:58.
active people aged between 16 and 25 are infected with chlamydia. It | :02:59. | :03:02.
could be the tip of the iceberg as many more go undetected. We know we | :03:03. | :03:07.
are underestimating the number of cases in chlamydia in Guernsey. If | :03:08. | :03:12.
we look at the numbers we diagnose, and estimate our rates of infection, | :03:13. | :03:19.
we think we are missing about 7 `90% of cases in the 16`25 `year`old age | :03:20. | :03:26.
group. This is why we need a screening programme. A sexual health | :03:27. | :03:31.
strategy is currently being drafted. It is hoping to encourage more | :03:32. | :03:36.
people to get themselves checked. I am in one of the clinic rooms which | :03:37. | :03:41.
is quite an intimidating place. However, you can take the swap | :03:42. | :03:46.
yourself in the toilet and hand it down to the desk. There are plans to | :03:47. | :03:51.
roll this out if the sexual health strategy is approved so people can | :03:52. | :03:55.
do this at home and send it in the post. Poor sexual health is costly. | :03:56. | :04:01.
Treating chlamydia and its knock`on effects caused the islands around | :04:02. | :04:07.
?100,000 a year. The health and social services department says it | :04:08. | :04:10.
will consider finding a screening programme, but only once the sexual | :04:11. | :04:16.
health strategy has been finalised. For now the sexually transmitted | :04:17. | :04:19.
infections remain a significant issue for Guernsey. It has been more | :04:20. | :04:26.
than ten years since fire destroyed a hotel ongoing deposit back south | :04:27. | :04:30.
coast, but today plans were revealed to transform the site into a 5`star | :04:31. | :04:35.
hotel. The architects behind the scheme claim it could beat the | :04:36. | :04:40.
competition to claim the accolade of the Channel Islands' best hotel In | :04:41. | :04:47.
September, 2003, the hotel was destroyed by a fire. A frying pan | :04:48. | :04:53.
caught light and spread the fire throughout the hotel, causing the | :04:54. | :04:58.
roof to collapse. But in 2012 another major fire broke out causing | :04:59. | :05:03.
the building to be deemed unsafe. The bird, neglected and grumbling, | :05:04. | :05:09.
the hotel has become an eyesore but if planners agree, it could be | :05:10. | :05:15.
transformed. Permission was granted in 2012 for the owners to demolish | :05:16. | :05:20.
the remains of the bird outbuilding and an architectural firm has | :05:21. | :05:23.
submitted plans to transform the site into a 5`star hotel. This is a | :05:24. | :05:31.
fantastic opportunity for Guernsey in building a tourist destination | :05:32. | :05:40.
and hotel of high quality. We will do a presentation and it will be at | :05:41. | :05:45.
that point that the planning board make a decision. The new hotel is | :05:46. | :05:50.
designed to blend in and where possible be eco`friendly. We have | :05:51. | :05:56.
used the biodiversity of the site which offsets the build of the hotel | :05:57. | :06:02.
itself. The decision is now in the hands of the environment Department. | :06:03. | :06:08.
Work could take two years and the project could cost in the region of | :06:09. | :06:16.
?20 million. That is it for now The National weather forecast is coming | :06:17. | :06:20.
up in a few moments, but first let's look at our weather forecast. | :06:21. | :06:26.
The severe gales continue to affect the island, but ever so slowly the | :06:27. | :06:33.
winds change direction and they slowly drop. But for the next few | :06:34. | :06:41.
hours there will be gusts of wind of around 60`70 mph and very rough seas | :06:42. | :06:46.
all around the islands. That is the forecast for the weekend. The winds | :06:47. | :06:51.
will drop, it becomes much drier and with a sigh of relief as we move | :06:52. | :06:55.
into Sunday it is a bright, mainly dry day. The showers tonight could | :06:56. | :07:01.
be heavy with the odd flash of thunder and lightning. Still it is | :07:02. | :07:08.
very windy first thing tomorrow morning. South`west winds by then. | :07:09. | :07:13.
The winds will slowly come around a bit more westerly and continue to | :07:14. | :07:19.
drop during the day. As for the forecast as we move into Sunday it | :07:20. | :07:24.
is a little bit better. Saturday night into Sunday the winds continue | :07:25. | :07:30.
to drop. Monday later on in the day we will see | :07:31. | :07:31.
milder day by the time we get to Tuesday. From us, good night. | :07:32. | :07:31.
and bright after a chilly night. I will leave you with the weekend | :07:32. | :07:35.
summary for London. Let's go to the weather centre to get the national | :07:36. | :07:43.
forecast. Our love hate relationship with the | :07:44. | :07:47.
weather has become unbalanced this winter, I suspect there is not a lot | :07:48. | :07:52.
of love left. Today's storm has not helped. It gave us 20 to 30 | :07:53. | :07:58.
millimetres of rain. Snow in the past few hours at lower levels in | :07:59. | :08:02.
eastern Scotland. That should turn to rain again but the blizzards in | :08:03. | :08:04.
the Scottish mountains will continue. This evening, it has been | :08:05. | :08:10.
the wind which has been most disruptive in southern England. Met | :08:11. | :08:12.
Office amber warning remains in force with gusts up to 80 miles an | :08:13. | :08:17.
hour along the south coast producing big | :08:18. | :08:18. |
