BBC News Channel, but now on BBC One, it's time for the news where | :00:00. | 3:59:59
you are. Good evening. | :00:00. | :00:11.
Guernsey will have a new Chief Minister in two weeks. Official | :00:12. | :00:15.
nominations open tomorrow for the job made vacant yesterday by Deputy | :00:16. | :00:18.
Peter Harwood. He stood down amid media coverage of his previous roles | :00:19. | :00:22.
at both the Channel Islands Stock Exchange and the body that regulates | :00:23. | :00:27.
it. Penny Elderfield joined me from Guernsey earlier with the details. | :00:28. | :00:38.
As you'd expect, although the States were meeting today to discuss other | :00:39. | :00:41.
matters, the situation with the Chief Minister was what got them | :00:42. | :00:44.
chatting in the corridors. And arriving at the States this morning, | :00:45. | :00:48.
and speaking publicly for the first time, Deputy Peter Harwood didn t | :00:49. | :00:50.
have much to add. The reason is as I stated. | :00:51. | :00:54.
Where does this leave you with the next six weeks? You remain Chief | :00:55. | :00:56.
Minister, will that be rather difficult? | :00:57. | :01:01.
It is not ideal but I thought the States will move quickly to appoint | :01:02. | :01:05.
my successor. What are your thoughts on who that | :01:06. | :01:07.
should be? That is a matter for the States | :01:08. | :01:13.
And asking the same questions to other deputies, not many would | :01:14. | :01:16.
commit to who they'd like to see as the next Chief Minister, or whether | :01:17. | :01:20.
indeed they'd stand themselves. So, are there likely candidates | :01:21. | :01:24.
Nominations open tomorrow, so we'll start to get confirmation then. But | :01:25. | :01:28.
there are a few names doing the rounds. The Social Security Minister | :01:29. | :01:32.
Allister Langlois is one of the first to confirm. And longest | :01:33. | :01:35.
standing politician Mary Lowe isn't ruling it out. Along with current | :01:36. | :01:38.
Deputy Chief Minister Jonathan Le Tocq, and former Chief Minister | :01:39. | :01:41.
Lyndon Trott. So a few potentials. But there are still those who think | :01:42. | :01:45.
it was a mistake for Deputy Harwood to go. | :01:46. | :01:49.
I am very disappointed. I don't think he should have gone. I just | :01:50. | :01:52.
wonder whether there was political pressure on him. That worries me. | :01:53. | :02:00.
As I said, nominations open tomorrow at 9am, and by this time in a | :02:01. | :02:03.
fortnight, we should know who's getting the top job. | :02:04. | :02:17.
Jersey's General Hospital is increasing the number of nurses who | :02:18. | :02:20.
can prescribe drugs and medication to patients. The hospital introduced | :02:21. | :02:23.
nurse prescribing for the first time last year. Health bosses says | :02:24. | :02:26.
patients are seen faster and can even be discharged sooner. But is | :02:27. | :02:28.
patient safety at risk? At Jersey General Hospital, Chris | :02:29. | :02:31.
Sparkes has his appoitnment with Sister Angela Moss. Chris suffers | :02:32. | :02:34.
from a heart condition and sees Angela to get his medication. Angela | :02:35. | :02:37.
is one of the island's recently qualified nurse practitioners | :02:38. | :02:40.
meaning she can prescribe patients like Chris with his drugs without | :02:41. | :02:43.
having to wait for a doctor to do it. | :02:44. | :02:45.
Before, we would have to interrupt the consultation and I would have to | :02:46. | :02:49.
find a doctor to provide his presecription. That might take time | :02:50. | :02:52.
in order to get the history and provide the prescription. | :02:53. | :02:55.
Time`saving is one of the biggest factors. | :02:56. | :02:56.
Angela qualified last summer and over in the classroom this is the | :02:57. | :03:00.
next group of qualified nurses put forward to become nurse prescribers. | :03:01. | :03:03.
They undergo a strict six month training programme as well as exams | :03:04. | :03:06.
before they go back on the hospital ward and these trainees will be | :03:07. | :03:09.
qualified later in the year. The fact that I am able to prescribe | :03:10. | :03:13.
and undertake a consultation with the patient will make inroads | :03:14. | :03:15.
towards my autonomous practice. It needs to be demanding because we | :03:16. | :03:25.
are talking about patient safety. Nurse prescribing first was launched | :03:26. | :03:33.
in the UK in 2006. It's claimed it cuts waiting times for patients but | :03:34. | :03:36.
should it really be nurses that prescribe us medication rather than | :03:37. | :03:39.
doctors? Hospital bosses here insist there isn't a risk to patient | :03:40. | :03:47.
safety. We are looking at some of our most | :03:48. | :03:51.
experienced nurses, who have an enhanced knowledge of the medical | :03:52. | :03:54.
condition and the medication that is right for the patient. So it is the | :03:55. | :03:58.
right person in the right place at the right time. | :03:59. | :04:03.
Back in the clinic Chris' consultation continues. He's given | :04:04. | :04:05.
his prescription before he goes to collect his drugs from the pharmacy. | :04:06. | :04:11.
I felt she was competent and it gave me confidence in the treatment I was | :04:12. | :04:14.
given. Nurse practitioners can also | :04:15. | :04:16.
prescribe and discharge patients on wards like A too. Health bosses | :04:17. | :04:22.
say having done this also helps save the health service money but insist | :04:23. | :04:25.
patients, like Chris, are the ones that that see the most benefit. | :04:26. | :04:34.
This year marks 100 years since the beginning of the First World War, | :04:35. | :04:38.
and here on the BBC we're looking at how this global conflict impacted on | :04:39. | :04:41.
the Channel islands. Mike Wilkins reports on Guernsey's secret | :04:42. | :04:42.
sea`base. Into the depths allied ships | :04:43. | :04:57.
continued to plunge. Late in 19 6 German submarines began to sink a | :04:58. | :05:00.
large number of merchant vessels taking supplies to the front lines. | :05:01. | :05:03.
So in order to protect the shipping, the British and French governments | :05:04. | :05:07.
decided to set up a secret seaplane base on Guernsey. | :05:08. | :05:15.
This photograph shows the model yacht pond then with the frame of | :05:16. | :05:27.
the hangar. In the summer of 19 7, despite the mission being | :05:28. | :05:30.
classified, more than 100 French servicemen came to the island along | :05:31. | :05:33.
with 12 sea planes, although the number of both of these was soon to | :05:34. | :05:37.
grow. The biplanes could carry two or three crew with two bombs on four | :05:38. | :05:41.
hour patrols. And within a year the aviators had proved to be very | :05:42. | :05:44.
successful in hunting and destroying U`boats prowling around our shores. | :05:45. | :05:54.
Within 18 months, they had formed about 25 submarines and discovered | :05:55. | :06:00.
the minefields. It was very successful. The whole regiment were | :06:01. | :06:09.
awarded a medal by the French Army. Many people weren't and still aren't | :06:10. | :06:13.
aware the base ever existed, it was top secret after all. But when many | :06:14. | :06:17.
think of the slaughter on the West Front, this story shows that there | :06:18. | :06:23.
were some successes closer to home. That's the late news from BBC | :06:24. | :06:27.
Channel Islands ` David's here next with our weather and the national | :06:28. | :06:28.
forecast follows him. Goodnight Good evening. We have had some | :06:29. | :06:43.
sunshine today. There will be some rain overnight but that will clear | :06:44. | :06:49.
quickly. A day of scattered showers to come tomorrow. The rain will set | :06:50. | :06:55.
in tonight and move pretty fast so that by the morning it will have | :06:56. | :07:00.
gone. What replaces it is some Sunnis bells. `` Sani spells. 1 | :07:01. | :07:12.
degrees will be the top temperature. We will see some blustery westerly | :07:13. | :07:23.
winds. Saturday could also be quite wet with dry weather on Sunday. | :07:24. | :07:25.
Good night. day on Friday, wet snow around and a | :07:26. | :07:34.
breeze blowing as well. Tricky into the weekend. And now we have the | :07:35. | :07:39.
national forecast. Good evening. We know it has been a | :07:40. | :07:41.
wet winter | :07:42. | :07:43. |
