News at Six, so it's goodbye from me, and on BBC One we now join

:00:00.:00:00.

Tonight on BBC London News: The Scientologists who've won a landmark

:00:00.:00:08.

legal victory to get married in the church's central London chapel.

:00:09.:00:19.

I'm really excited and I'm really glad we are finally treated equally

:00:20.:00:23.

and that we can get married in our own church. Thousands of students

:00:24.:00:31.

demonstrate at the University of London over the right to protest.

:00:32.:00:41.

Barclays bank is the name on the scheme now but who will you see in

:00:42.:00:43.

the future? And how making mannequins by hand is

:00:44.:00:45.

a model business. Good evening and welcome to the

:00:46.:01:00.

programme. They're the Scientologists who today

:01:01.:01:05.

won a landmark legal battle. The Supreme Court has ruled that Louisa

:01:06.:01:08.

Hodkin and Alessandro Calcioli can be married at the church's chapel in

:01:09.:01:13.

Central London. Previous rulings had said that Scientology services were

:01:14.:01:16.

not acts of worship and so the ceremony couldn't take place. Ms

:01:17.:01:20.

Hodkin said she was excited by the ruling and just wanted to be treated

:01:21.:01:24.

like any other religious person. But the Government has raised concerns,

:01:25.:01:26.

saying the ruling has tax implications. Warren Nettleford has

:01:27.:01:32.

the story. This report contains flash

:01:33.:01:37.

photography. The Church of Scientology has always been

:01:38.:01:39.

associated with the glitz of Hollywood. Tom Cruise and John

:01:40.:01:42.

Travolta, two of their most famous members. But today's judgement is

:01:43.:01:48.

about a couple from East Grinstead. They are in love and now delighted

:01:49.:01:51.

they can get married in their charge. `` their church. I'm really

:01:52.:01:58.

excited and delighted we can give American our own church. `` get

:01:59.:02:09.

married in our own church. Today's ruling change the understanding of

:02:10.:02:13.

what religion is. Now it is not only about believing God but but the

:02:14.:02:16.

acceptance that some belief systems are different. Yet the macro today

:02:17.:02:23.

the court is moving away from a certain definition of religion and

:02:24.:02:30.

is embracing purism. `` pluralism. It does not believe in one God

:02:31.:02:37.

looking like a man. The Church of Scientology have attracted

:02:38.:02:44.

controversy, seen by some as being a cult. It was founded in the 1950s.

:02:45.:02:52.

It is a human rights issue. I wanted to get married as a Scientologist. I

:02:53.:02:56.

didn't want to be discriminated against. I didn't want to have a

:02:57.:03:00.

second wedding. I wanted to get married in my own church. It is here

:03:01.:03:06.

that they can get married. They expect friends and family to join

:03:07.:03:09.

them in their separation. But the government aren't so happy. The

:03:10.:03:13.

Church of Scientology can take advantage of lower business rates.

:03:14.:03:16.

The government are calling in the law years. After a five`year legal

:03:17.:03:20.

battle, it is a happy ending for this couple. But the `` there are

:03:21.:03:26.

now questions as to what the judgement will mean for other groups

:03:27.:03:30.

who before now have not been recognised as religions.

:03:31.:03:39.

Plenty more to come tonight, including: Is Heathrow now certain

:03:40.:03:41.

to be expanded? Rumours suggest it's the favoured

:03:42.:03:47.

option for new runways. Thousands of students have been

:03:48.:03:50.

protesting at what they call draconian measures by police and the

:03:51.:03:53.

University of London. It follows an injunction taken out by the

:03:54.:03:56.

university that bans sit`in protests on some campuses after students

:03:57.:04:00.

occupied a building last week. But the university says the injunction

:04:01.:04:03.

is necessary to prevent violent and intimidating behaviour. Chris Rogers

:04:04.:04:15.

reports. Student politics. A fundamental part

:04:16.:04:20.

of university life. From demands for a free education to justice for Mark

:04:21.:04:27.

Duggan. Dozens of protest groups united in an unofficial march

:04:28.:04:30.

against allegations of police intimidation. Over the last week we

:04:31.:04:37.

have seen police if it 100 students out of an occupation without an

:04:38.:04:42.

injunction. We have seen mass arrests 41 in two days. We have seen

:04:43.:04:46.

a level of police violence which has never been seen on a campus, surly

:04:47.:04:54.

that I haven't seen. `` certainly. No police horses or batons yet, but

:04:55.:04:59.

swinging punches, grabbing people, throwing them to the floor, totally

:05:00.:05:06.

unprovoked stuff. This footage was handed to BBC London News the it

:05:07.:05:10.

appear to show an officer hitting a student. It is December the 4th and

:05:11.:05:18.

police are removing students from a building they had been occupying.

:05:19.:05:22.

But does it show the whole picture? In a statement, the police argued

:05:23.:05:25.

that a number of officers were confronted by 300 protesters, their

:05:26.:05:30.

faces covered and throwing smoke bombs. I want to know why you would

:05:31.:05:35.

want to cover your face if it is peaceful? Why are you stopping us

:05:36.:05:43.

from filming? Because you are trying to film pupil. `` film people. That

:05:44.:05:52.

is my job. No sign of the police anywhere as the protesters make

:05:53.:05:55.

their way up this public highway, which they are now blocking. If this

:05:56.:06:00.

was an organised a march, they would be chaperoned by the police force

:06:01.:06:05.

and taken on an agreed, guided route.

:06:06.:06:15.

The University of London obtained an injunction banning protests by the

:06:16.:06:17.

occupation of their buildings such as the Senate. An injunction these

:06:18.:06:21.

protesters were hell`bent on ignoring.

:06:22.:06:27.

Hundreds of students managed to break through the gates leading to

:06:28.:06:31.

the Senate house. They have also set this dustbin on fire. Still no sign

:06:32.:06:40.

of the police. The only security stopping them

:06:41.:06:45.

getting inside was heavy duty gates. But the police were monitoring the

:06:46.:06:51.

protest by air and possibly by CCTV. But why didn't they moved in? Was it

:06:52.:06:56.

a tactic to avoid the confrontation that has made the students are

:06:57.:07:02.

angry? The Met Police told BBC London News they had an appropriate

:07:03.:07:04.

operation in place with officers deployed around the capital. In the

:07:05.:07:09.

end, the demonstrators marched to the police. A shaft the Avenue `` in

:07:10.:07:18.

Shaftesbury Avenue and then at the gates of Downing Street.

:07:19.:07:29.

A nine`year`old girl who died on Christmas Day just hours after being

:07:30.:07:34.

discharged from Lewisham University Hospital probably wouldn't have been

:07:35.:07:37.

allowed to leave if she'd been seen by a more senior doctor, a coroner

:07:38.:07:40.

has concluded. Rhianna Rawding was treated by a junior doctor at the

:07:41.:07:44.

hospital last year but, seven hours after being sent home, she collapsed

:07:45.:07:47.

and stopped breathing. Ellie Price reports. A lively little person who

:07:48.:07:54.

made the best of things. Nine`year old Rhianna's parents said she would

:07:55.:07:57.

still be here if she had not been sent home from hospital last

:07:58.:08:01.

Christmas. I accept that from the evidence and the expertise before

:08:02.:08:09.

him, that he thinks it would have made a difference. On a personal

:08:10.:08:12.

lesson `` level, I think she was let down. Bereavement is never easy for

:08:13.:08:19.

anyone, but when it is your child it is very hard. Rhianna had suffered

:08:20.:08:24.

from infections for years but her parents said that on this occasion

:08:25.:08:28.

dumping was not right. The coroner had the junior doctor who saw her

:08:29.:08:30.

may not have communicated all the information when he discussed it. ``

:08:31.:08:42.

heard. She died of septicaemia. The coroner concluded it was highly

:08:43.:08:46.

likely that if Rhianna had been kept in, her deterioration would have

:08:47.:08:51.

been noticed and acted on. He said retaining her in hospital for a few

:08:52.:08:54.

hours of observation would have made a difference. But he said he could

:08:55.:08:57.

not go as far as to say it would have saved her life.

:08:58.:09:02.

Two senior doctors, had they been the person Rhianna had been in front

:09:03.:09:07.

of, they would have kept in for observation. There would have been

:09:08.:09:11.

an option of antibiotics. There would have been an option of

:09:12.:09:13.

starting treatment. That opportunity was denied to the family. It is an

:09:14.:09:20.

extremely difficult thing for them to come to terms with. The coroner

:09:21.:09:27.

was satisfied that since the death, the University Hospital had changed

:09:28.:09:31.

its policies and guidelines. Rhianna's family say they will now

:09:32.:09:43.

consider further action. The search is on for a new sponsor

:09:44.:09:47.

of the Mayor's flagship bike hire scheme and cycle superhighways after

:09:48.:09:50.

Barclays announced it will end its sponsorship three years earlier than

:09:51.:09:53.

expected. Transport for London says it was a commercial decision by the

:09:54.:09:57.

bank. Critics say there are still questions surrounding the deal.

:09:58.:09:59.

Let's join our transport correspondent, Tom Edwards. Tom, how

:10:00.:10:03.

much of a surprise is this? This is a really big surprise. We had been

:10:04.:10:09.

told that this deal was duty run until 2018. Now it turns out that

:10:10.:10:16.

Barclays will walk away in 2015. Fog this morning at City Hall. Still

:10:17.:10:22.

accusations of a lack of transparency cling to the Mayor's

:10:23.:10:28.

cycling sponsorship deal. The news `` users are concerned. It is such a

:10:29.:10:36.

great scheme. Barclays has spent nearly ?25 million sponsoring the

:10:37.:10:39.

scheme. The superhighway is also carry its name. The money now won't

:10:40.:10:46.

go beyond 2015. It had previously been announced it would carry on

:10:47.:10:52.

until 2018. It is worrying. Ever since this project has been

:10:53.:10:56.

implement by the Mayor, there have been problems associated with the

:10:57.:11:00.

sponsorship. I transparency. The Mayor has promised ?50 million

:11:01.:11:05.

sponsorship. `` a lack of transparency. The real issue is that

:11:06.:11:11.

Barclays have enjoyed the good times, the fanfare and the opening

:11:12.:11:15.

of the scheme, but ultimately they have bailed when the times are

:11:16.:11:18.

getting tough and we are seeing collisions involving the bikes.

:11:19.:11:24.

Cycle superhighways have been criticised by the Met, a coroner and

:11:25.:11:31.

trauma teams. A number of cyclists have died on super cycle Highway

:11:32.:11:37.

two. Both transport for London and Barclays denied the recent scrutiny

:11:38.:11:42.

of cycling safety has anything to do with the end of this deal. The

:11:43.:11:46.

question now is will other companies be put off sponsoring cycling in the

:11:47.:11:56.

capital? Clearly there are worries about the incidents we have had. But

:11:57.:12:02.

we heard yesterday that there was a spike. That shouldn't be a major

:12:03.:12:06.

concern for sponsors. It is a big top 40 F L. `` big problem for

:12:07.:12:13.

transport for London. It is about the brand of Boris himself. Is it

:12:14.:12:22.

overshadowing the bikes? Nobody calls them Barclays bikes. They are

:12:23.:12:30.

Boris bikes. That was the view at the transport for London board

:12:31.:12:33.

meeting this morning. It says it was a commercial decision by the bank.

:12:34.:12:38.

We know that Barclays was undertaking a review of all its

:12:39.:12:42.

sponsorships around the world over the last six months. Ultimately,

:12:43.:12:45.

this will be a commercial decision on their part. If they were happy

:12:46.:12:51.

they would stay with you. They are happy to work with us through to

:12:52.:12:58.

2015. Said the search starts for a new sponsor. Campaigners warn that

:12:59.:13:02.

any loss of sponsorship could mean less funds to make the roads safer.

:13:03.:13:08.

I know it is a bit soon, but where are they in terms of that new search

:13:09.:13:14.

for a sponsor? The official in charge of this says he has already

:13:15.:13:17.

had people on the phone expressing an interest. What is really

:13:18.:13:21.

interesting is how much they are going to get for this new deal. Any

:13:22.:13:26.

shortfall is going to be made up from other funds elsewhere. What do

:13:27.:13:32.

you make in terms of the timing, given the recent focus on cycling

:13:33.:13:38.

safety? I don't think this could have come at a worse time for City

:13:39.:13:42.

Hall and the Mayor. They had been on the back foot for about a month or

:13:43.:13:46.

so when it comes to cycling safety. Critics have been lining up day

:13:47.:13:52.

after day to put the boot in. It has not been an easy time for the Mayor

:13:53.:13:58.

and City Hall. Tom, thank you. Stay with us. Still to come: Can

:13:59.:14:05.

Chelsea and Arsenal secure SOP `` top spots in their Champions League

:14:06.:14:09.

groups, and with it potentially a more favourable draw for the last

:14:10.:14:13.

16? Plus, the art of the human form and

:14:14.:14:18.

why this factory is still making mannequins by hand. We all see

:14:19.:14:24.

ourselves in one particular way. When you see a mannequin, you think

:14:25.:14:26.

a year, I could look like that. Next Tuesday we will be told what

:14:27.:14:38.

options for expanding airport capacity remain on the table when

:14:39.:14:41.

the Davis commission reveals its short list. Today, reports have

:14:42.:14:45.

emerged saying the preferred option is already clear and that is

:14:46.:14:49.

building more runways at Heathrow. It comes as another report has

:14:50.:14:53.

warned a massive job loss if Heathrow closes. Karl Mercer has now

:14:54.:15:00.

looking into this. Let's look into this report. It was done by several

:15:01.:15:07.

councils, who got together with some experts to look at all the scenarios

:15:08.:15:11.

for the future airport options. They looked at the worst`case scenario

:15:12.:15:13.

for them off Heathrow closing altogether. They said up to 70,000

:15:14.:15:19.

jobs across those councils could go. The worst hit would be kept ``

:15:20.:15:24.

Hounslow. We spoke to their deputy leader earlier. I think it will be

:15:25.:15:31.

disastrous for the West London economy and the greater UK economy

:15:32.:15:36.

if Heathrow closed. The devastation we are looking at in Hounslow is

:15:37.:15:40.

losing 36,000 jobs which is well over a quarter of the number of jobs

:15:41.:15:45.

in the area. You can only describe that as a devastating thing.

:15:46.:15:52.

Interesting developments. This is interesting. There have been leaks

:15:53.:15:58.

to several newspapers from the Davis commission, which reports next

:15:59.:16:02.

Tuesday. It has been looking at airport capacity in the south`east.

:16:03.:16:09.

It is said that they went to the government with three options, all

:16:10.:16:12.

including extra capacity at Heathrow. One with extra runways at

:16:13.:16:18.

Heathrow and Gatwick but no mention of the Thames S3 airport or an

:16:19.:16:23.

airport to the east. We are told that he has been told to go back

:16:24.:16:26.

again and think about adding another option. `` Thames estuary airport.

:16:27.:16:33.

We're told that it would be of concern to the nearest office if

:16:34.:16:36.

this was not mentioned. It would be an acceptable to the mayor. And to a

:16:37.:16:45.

lot of MPs like Zac Goldsmith. I think should've been out to

:16:46.:16:48.

consultation from the start. If these emerging stories are

:16:49.:16:50.

authenticated, and think they can be, because my sources tell me that

:16:51.:16:57.

this is what has happened, we cannot pretend that the review is

:16:58.:17:01.

independent. Think this is a sham designed to make an unpopular

:17:02.:17:04.

decision look like it was made by an independent authority. Clearly, we

:17:05.:17:09.

will find out the truth next Tuesday but we got a statement from the

:17:10.:17:13.

government today, saying that Harold Davis had met the government but had

:17:14.:17:17.

not shared his plans with them. A say that the Airports Commission is

:17:18.:17:20.

independent and will deliver its report next week.

:17:21.:17:26.

Until next week then. A memorial service is taking place

:17:27.:17:30.

in Trafalgar Square for Nelson Mandela. Hundreds of South Africans

:17:31.:17:34.

now living in London attended the service at Saint Martin in the

:17:35.:17:38.

Fields. Among them, Sir Sydney Kentridge, who acted as Mandela's

:17:39.:17:46.

defence lawyer in the 50s. # Nelson Mandela, Norse and Mandela.

:17:47.:17:53.

`` Nelson Mandela. Uplifting singing at a very uplifting service.

:17:54.:17:57.

Nelson Mandela's memorial was full of moving tribute from the South

:17:58.:18:02.

African High Commissioner Quire, to supporters and friends. `` Quire.

:18:03.:18:15.

He showed us how to be happy. He was the best African. The manager

:18:16.:18:29.

juicing the tributes left South Africa in 2005 to move to a

:18:30.:18:33.

Methodist Church in Walthamstow. On Sunday, we can cry all we like but

:18:34.:18:37.

today, we are celebrating the life of the man. We are honouring him

:18:38.:18:41.

with this memorial and saying, let us take from what he was and begin

:18:42.:18:47.

to encapsulated that within who we are. On Sunday, it will be sombre

:18:48.:18:52.

and there may be some tears. But irrespective, we want to celebrate

:18:53.:18:57.

the life that he lived. The service was held at Saint Martins in the

:18:58.:19:01.

field got it has strong links to the anti`apartheid movement. `` because

:19:02.:19:07.

it has strong links. Both venues held freedom of the jewels for

:19:08.:19:11.

:19:12.:19:15.

`` freedom vigils. Among the speakers, lawyer who represented

:19:16.:19:20.

Nelson Mandela in the 60s. He treated everybody, no matter how

:19:21.:19:24.

great or small, exactly the same. And that is why he was so loved by

:19:25.:19:35.

everyone in South Africa. A memorial service full of people

:19:36.:19:44.

and all of them smiling. Dreams of reaching the Champions

:19:45.:19:47.

League final in Lisbon next May are well and truly alive for Chelsea and

:19:48.:19:50.

Arsenal. Both teams play their final games tonight. Our reporter is at

:19:51.:19:56.

Stamford Bridge. The blues are already in the knockout stage.

:19:57.:20:02.

Yes, Chelsea are already through and Arsenal have more work to do. The

:20:03.:20:06.

significance at Stamford Bridge is on Chelsea trying to secure top

:20:07.:20:11.

spot. And with that, possibly a more favourable draw for the last 16. The

:20:12.:20:15.

only man who can `` the only way to be sure of that is two night.

:20:16.:20:20.

Anything less, and they could be put to the post by SC battle if they win

:20:21.:20:37.

:20:38.:20:41.

of having to play the top three groups in the next round. But his

:20:42.:20:45.

side have been letting in a lot of goals, beaten 3`2 by Stoke city.

:20:46.:20:51.

Even the mannequins on training ground would probably cost his side

:20:52.:20:54.

a few robins right now, says Jose Mourinho. You might laugh, but at

:20:55.:21:01.

this moment, if you trained defensive corners against the

:21:02.:21:04.

dummies, I think one dummy would score. All of the rebounds go to the

:21:05.:21:13.

opponents. I think the big bounce would go to the dummies as well. ``

:21:14.:21:19.

rebound is. What about Arsenal? What do they need to do to reach the last

:21:20.:21:25.

16? They just need to avoid a heavy defeat away to Nathalie. Nothing

:21:26.:21:28.

better than a 3`0 defeat would see them through. It seems rather

:21:29.:21:36.

perverse that Arsenal play better in Europe domestically than Chelsea.

:21:37.:21:42.

They are not yet mathematically through. Of course, they would like

:21:43.:21:45.

the top spot and a draw tonight would be enough for them to get

:21:46.:21:49.

that. Given how well they are playing and that they are five

:21:50.:21:51.

points clear in the Premier League as well, should they make it through

:21:52.:21:55.

and get a favourable draw on Monday, people might start to talk

:21:56.:21:59.

about them as potential winners. Of course, they have never won this

:22:00.:22:05.

competition. Chelsea did win it, two years ago. And we might get some

:22:06.:22:08.

interesting pointers tonight about how realistic those dreams are, to

:22:09.:22:13.

bring that famous trophy back here to Stamford Bridge.

:22:14.:22:20.

Many thanks, Chris. It has been making mannequins for

ourselves in some particular way. When you see a mannequin in a

:22:55.:22:58.

window, you think, I could look like that, but whether it is true or not

:22:59.:23:04.

is another matter! The company has been in existence for more than a

:23:05.:23:07.

century, claiming to be the only firm in the country to make models

:23:08.:23:11.

out of fibreglass and papier`mache. Tackling off competition from

:23:12.:23:16.

cheaper foreign manufacturers. `` battling off. Each order is bespoke.

:23:17.:23:22.

The mannequins they made for the BoE represent `` David Bowie

:23:23.:23:28.

representative `` retrospective at the V had to be leaner than usual.

:23:29.:23:32.

This is the fibreglass production unit. The mould is lined in resin

:23:33.:23:37.

and fibreglass is laid into them. They are put together, and when they

:23:38.:23:44.

are cured, out pops the figure. Each design reflects current taste in

:23:45.:23:48.

fashion, with one common theme. Retailers like things slim. 98% of

:23:49.:23:56.

what we sell is very similar size. It is size eight to ten. I could

:23:57.:24:00.

have a size 20 mannequin in the showroom but we will sell very few.

:24:01.:24:05.

The tram depot where they work is falling down around their ears and

:24:06.:24:09.

so next year, they will move. Fear is that it will be to without soul

:24:10.:24:13.

and given the nature of what they make, that seems unlikely.

:24:14.:24:18.

People always say to me, how spooky to be any factory full of

:24:19.:24:22.

mannequins. But having been in the industry for 35 years, I can walk

:24:23.:24:25.

through the factory with all the lights off and it does not scare me

:24:26.:24:30.

at all. But often, there is a time when you open the door and there is

:24:31.:24:36.

a mannequin there and, ooh! Over to Peter with the weather. A

:24:37.:24:43.

lot of fog across the capital. A foggy day in London town.

:24:44.:24:47.

Lots of fantastic pictures popping up on social media. Here is one that

:24:48.:24:52.

tells the story beautifully. It was taken by the flying squad, by one of

:24:53.:24:55.

the Metropolitan Police's helicopter crews. It is Canary Wharf. Above the

:24:56.:25:03.

fog, lots of sunshine. Look at those sharp shadows. In fact, it was not

:25:04.:25:09.

foggy everywhere. In south London, lots of sunshine. In Croydon, the

:25:10.:25:13.

tempter got up to 10 degrees. This evening, the fog is reforming. ``

:25:14.:25:20.

the temperature got up. The fog will be with as overnight, hence the Met

:25:21.:25:27.

Office warning. That is in place until the end of tomorrow morning's

:25:28.:25:31.

rush hour. The fog tonight will be patchy than it was last night. In a

:25:32.:25:36.

way, that is more dangerous because it can lull you into a false sense

:25:37.:25:40.

of security. Lots of care and caution overnight and into tomorrow

:25:41.:25:47.

morning. As far as the fog is concerned, the thing that will turn

:25:48.:25:50.

it patchy is the cloud moving in over the top of us. And the breeze

:25:51.:25:55.

freshening up. That will tend to break the fog up. You're in there,

:25:56.:25:58.

the temperatures close to freezing. For most of us, staying a few

:25:59.:26:03.

degrees above. `` here and there. In tomorrow morning `` tomorrow

:26:04.:26:08.

morning, you might want to make the best of our travel updates on TV,

:26:09.:26:15.

radio and online. Unfortunately, there will not be much blue sky

:26:16.:26:18.

above the cloud, because the cloud will be thickening up as the fog

:26:19.:26:21.

clears away. Eventually bringing us some rain after dark tomorrow. It

:26:22.:26:27.

looks as though it will be a damp end to the weekend with brighter,

:26:28.:26:30.

colder weather on Saturday. The rain will be back with us on Sunday. But

:26:31.:26:35.

it will be getting milder. The picture was incredible!

:26:36.:26:42.

A look at the main headlines. Lloyds Banking Group has been fined a

:26:43.:26:46.

record ?28 million for a sales incentives team `` scheme in which

:26:47.:26:52.

staff had to hit targets or risk being demoted. Workers were under

cure over the next kid. Two Scientologists have won a legal

:27:11.:27:13.

battle allowing them to be married at the church's Chapel in London.

:27:14.:27:18.

Previous rulings have said that Scientology services will not acts

It follows an injunction banning sit in protests after students occupied

:27:34.:27:37.

a building last week will stop and that is it for now.

:27:38.:27:40.

Assad Ahmed will be back with the late news for you. Until then, from

:27:41.:27:44.

me and the team, thanks for watching. Have a lovely evening.
