Campaigners say prices are rising three times faster than wages. That

:00:00.3:59:59

is all from BBC News Tonight on BBC London. How the

:00:00.:00:07.

capital's commuters are among the hardest hit by the latest rise in

:00:08.:00:16.

train fares. It is the capacity problem particularly coming in from

:00:17.:00:19.

Redding. Very often, you can't get a seat and are paying a huge amount,

:00:20.:00:22.

not even to have a comfortable journey. We'll find out if the new

:00:23.:00:27.

fares are fair and how they might affect you. Also tonight. Hundreds

:00:28.:00:30.

of flood alerts in place across the South East after yet more heavy

:00:31.:00:38.

rain. I'm in Surrey where people say they have seen the worst flooding in

:00:39.:00:43.

40 years. They are preparing for even more rain. The Catholic Church

:00:44.:00:46.

investigates why it took three days to find the body of a priest in a

:00:47.:00:52.

supermarket car park. And as more of the capital's restaurants adopt a no

:00:53.:00:55.

booking policy, why you might have to queue to dine out in London.

:00:56.:01:10.

Good evening. More than half a million people commute by train into

:01:11.:01:17.

London every day. And from today, they'll be paying more for the

:01:18.:01:20.

privilege. Across the country, the average fare has gone up by 2.8%.

:01:21.:01:25.

But if you're a season ticket holder, as many London commuters

:01:26.:01:30.

are, prices have risen even more. On average you'll be paying over 3%

:01:31.:01:36.

more. It's true, the rise is the smallest for four years because of a

:01:37.:01:39.

Government`imposed cap. But critics say the cost of using trains is

:01:40.:01:47.

rising faster than wages. The price rise may be smaller than in recent

:01:48.:01:50.

years but that's of little comfort many commuters. Alex Bushill is

:01:51.:01:53.

outside Victoria Station for us this evening. A New Year and new fares.

:01:54.:01:58.

No surprise this, they are going up again. Season tickets on the train

:01:59.:02:03.

is up 3.1%. Among the worst affected, these commuters from

:02:04.:02:08.

Redding. It's the capacity problem particularly coming in from

:02:09.:02:12.

Redding. Very often, you can't get a seat so you're paying a huge amount

:02:13.:02:15.

not to have a comfortable journey. I don't mind paying the money because

:02:16.:02:19.

I know I have to get to work so the money needs to get paid. Rising

:02:20.:02:23.

every year is not fair, I don't think. Maybe every three years is

:02:24.:02:28.

fair enough, but not every year. It's not right. Even a modest

:02:29.:02:31.

increase is hotly contested. The rail company says the smallest race

:02:32.:02:36.

in three years per passenger groups point out how to get prices are

:02:37.:02:39.

increasing twice as fast as wages. One of the hardest hit are commuters

:02:40.:02:43.

using the Shenfield to London line. From today it will cost 3.6% more,

:02:44.:02:48.

an additional ?96 on an annual season ticket. From Redding, 3.2%

:02:49.:02:53.

increase. An annual season ticket now costs more than ?4000. For those

:02:54.:02:58.

on the Bedford and battled on line, they are up by 3.1%, the average

:02:59.:03:04.

increase across all lines. Anyone using the Hartford line has seen a

:03:05.:03:07.

3% hike. The train company say the extra money will be reinvested back

:03:08.:03:12.

into the network. Billions of pounds are being spent on huge improvements

:03:13.:03:16.

to the rail network in and around London for the viewer only have to

:03:17.:03:19.

go to King's Cross to the vast amount of money spent to improve the

:03:20.:03:22.

station there. There's also many other smaller schemes, less usable,

:03:23.:03:29.

helping to improve the speed we make trains travel and the ability for

:03:30.:03:34.

them to carry more passengers. So, ?16 billion will now be reinvested

:03:35.:03:38.

over the next five years. Passenger groups are not happy. I asked one

:03:39.:03:42.

white meter shouldn't pay for improvements they will benefit from.

:03:43.:03:46.

The investments are welcome but it shouldn't just be fare payers to pay

:03:47.:03:51.

for it. The rest of the world recognises that investment in the

:03:52.:03:54.

railways doesn't just benefit the users, but everybody, less traffic

:03:55.:03:59.

on the roads, less pollution and a better economy. We think the country

:04:00.:04:03.

needs to follow suit and otherwise, London will find itself priced out

:04:04.:04:08.

of the world economy. Ticket price increases for travelling excuse and

:04:09.:04:12.

within London, on the Underground, won't be revealed until next week.

:04:13.:04:15.

For those committing out of the city, they know where they stand,

:04:16.:04:18.

the wait is over, and they will be paying more as of today. There are

:04:19.:04:27.

nearly 100 flood alerts in place across the South East after

:04:28.:04:30.

yesterday's heavy rain. Roads have been closed and trains have been

:04:31.:04:33.

cancelled. The Environment Agency is keeping a close eye on rising river

:04:34.:04:36.

levels in Surrey including several areas which were seriously flooded

:04:37.:04:40.

over Christmas. It's issued flood warnings in Elstead. Guildford,

:04:41.:04:43.

Horley and Leatherhead. Our reporter, Tarah Welsh is in Surrey

:04:44.:04:51.

for us this evening. Tarah. Well, we have certainly seen wide today, we

:04:52.:04:55.

have been across Surrey, lots of roads are being closed, and just

:04:56.:04:59.

take a look behind me. There is not usually water here. This is a flood

:05:00.:05:03.

plain and now the water is a few centimetres away from the road and

:05:04.:05:08.

this area flooded badly over Christmas. Just down the road from

:05:09.:05:13.

here, we were speaking to staff there who said they had a power cut

:05:14.:05:18.

and they were seeing patients by candlelight. You can understand why

:05:19.:05:24.

there were concerns about more rain. This is usually an access road to

:05:25.:05:28.

Leatherhead football club. But after yesterday 's rain, it is now under

:05:29.:05:31.

water. So with the football pitch on the clubhouse. It is the river which

:05:32.:05:37.

has burst its banks. It runs parallel with the football club. 150

:05:38.:05:41.

metres from here. The police came down yesterday with a red alert

:05:42.:05:47.

flood warning which is quite a rare one. And they said they wanted a

:05:48.:05:52.

place locked for safety and the Alec Este turned off the mains, which

:05:53.:05:56.

obviously we did. It's the second time it is flooded in two weeks. On

:05:57.:06:01.

Christmas Eve there was four feet of water here. Volunteers help to clear

:06:02.:06:06.

it, but now it is back. Rivers are rising and roads are closing and

:06:07.:06:10.

homes are threatened again. Many in the south`east were flooded and

:06:11.:06:12.

without power after last weeks storms. The water was all swirling

:06:13.:06:17.

around here. Peter had to leave his home by boat. It was about a foot

:06:18.:06:27.

deep. I stayed by the front door. The water kept coming up so I

:06:28.:06:31.

thought, I'd better get going and get the furniture up on blocks. One

:06:32.:06:35.

of the flood warnings as for this area and you can see why. Usually,

:06:36.:06:40.

you can't make out the river from here. But now there's water

:06:41.:06:43.

completely covering this flood plain. Now, flood warning means an

:06:44.:06:48.

area is at risk of flooding. And anyone likely to flood should take

:06:49.:06:52.

action. Doing things like getting sandbags and moving electrical is

:06:53.:06:57.

upstairs. But for some, that is too late. Belongings and the holiday

:06:58.:06:59.

season completely ruined. Rain is expected across London and

:07:00.:07:08.

the south`east over the next 48 hours and we have just heard that

:07:09.:07:11.

the Thames Barrier will be closing tonight because of concerns about

:07:12.:07:17.

strong wind leading to large floods. In Surrey, people have been

:07:18.:07:21.

telling me this on the worst floods they've seen since 1968. They say,

:07:22.:07:26.

yes, they are worried about more rain coming over the next few

:07:27.:07:29.

hours, but they are more concerned about the long`term future. Some of

:07:30.:07:32.

them don't know when they're going to able to go back to their homes,

:07:33.:07:36.

and another told me today that his insurance will cover the damage but

:07:37.:07:40.

he says he has been told he can't renew with that same company. So,

:07:41.:07:44.

miserable start to the New Year for many people here. The situation

:07:45.:07:49.

affecting many thousands of people tonight. Thanks very much for that.

:07:50.:07:54.

A bit more on the weather now, as damage to a train track caused by a

:07:55.:07:58.

landslide in Surrey will take at least a month to repair. More than

:07:59.:08:01.

40 metres of the embankment at Ockley collapsed after the recent

:08:02.:08:04.

storms. Network Rail says the size and location of the damage make it

:08:05.:08:07.

awkward to repair and passengers will have to use alternative routes.

:08:08.:08:13.

And of course we'll have a full weather update from Sara Thornton

:08:14.:08:17.

later in the programme. Also to come. Driving artists out. Are

:08:18.:08:20.

property prices pushing our creative industries out of the capital?

:08:21.:08:30.

A 72`year`old man has been punched and kicked by a group of teenagers

:08:31.:08:36.

after he asked them to stop throwing sweets at rail passengers. British

:08:37.:08:40.

Transport Police have released pictures of three young men they

:08:41.:08:46.

want to speak to. The attack happened on Platform A at St Pancras

:08:47.:08:49.

International Station exactly two weeks ago. Officers say the assault

:08:50.:08:55.

was unprovoked and malicious. The Catholic Church in Luton is

:08:56.:08:58.

investigating the death of a priest found dead in his car in a

:08:59.:09:03.

supermarket car park. Police believe the body of 42`year`old Father

:09:04.:09:05.

Joseph Williams from Luton lay undiscovered at Morrisons in

:09:06.:09:08.

Houghton Regis in Bedfordshire for three days. Yvonne Hall reports.

:09:09.:09:19.

Struggling to come to terms with the loss of a much loved colleague.

:09:20.:09:23.

Father Kevin McGinn or, at Luton's Holy Ghost Catholic Church today.

:09:24.:09:28.

People have lost some who served, someone they liked and admired. And

:09:29.:09:33.

also, for us, as priests, it's the loss of up colleague who has been

:09:34.:09:39.

with us since 2011 but has been a priest since 2000. 42`year`old

:09:40.:09:41.

father Joseph Williams was found dead in his car in a supermarket car

:09:42.:09:46.

park and police believe his body had been there for three days. Desperate

:09:47.:09:51.

Francis, the Church in Luton has launched an investigation. So far,

:09:52.:09:57.

there are no clues. The CCTV at the church showed him looking at the

:09:58.:09:59.

church just before he went shopping. There's absolutely nothing in the

:10:00.:10:04.

house, nothing in his behaviour or anything like that, which indicates

:10:05.:10:09.

anything abnormal. Police officers investigating father Joel's death

:10:10.:10:13.

say they don't believe any suspicious circumstances and

:10:14.:10:18.

postmortem examinations were due to be held today. The result of that

:10:19.:10:22.

should be known within the week. Father Josef was due to spend a

:10:23.:10:27.

belated Christmas with his family on January the 16th. The data that is

:10:28.:10:33.

now set for his funeral. The Apollo Theatre on Shaftsbury Avenue will

:10:34.:10:36.

re`open its doors later this month after being forced to close after

:10:37.:10:39.

part of its ceiling collapsed before Christmas. More than 70 people were

:10:40.:10:45.

injured, some seriously, as plaster and wooden beams from the Grade II

:10:46.:10:48.

listed building fell onto the audience. It was hoped that

:10:49.:10:53.

performances would resume this weekend. But due to ongoing

:10:54.:10:56.

investigations, performances will start on the 13th. Still to come

:10:57.:11:04.

before the end of the programme. 60,000 people join the call for the

:11:05.:11:11.

Southbank Skate Park to stay put. And he's buried in an unmarked grave

:11:12.:11:15.

beneath Euston Station. Now money has been raised to commemorate the

:11:16.:11:18.

maritime explorer who named Australia.

:11:19.:11:28.

We often hear about problems associated with London's rising

:11:29.:11:32.

property market but what may not be so obvious is the impact it's having

:11:33.:11:37.

on our artists. For hundreds of years, the capital has acted as a

:11:38.:11:45.

magnet for the best creative minds. But these days, affording to live

:11:46.:11:48.

and work here presents a challenge of its own. The effect is that

:11:49.:11:52.

artists are being priced out of London. Rita Monjardino reports. It

:11:53.:11:58.

may not look like much from the outside, but this former biscuit

:11:59.:12:02.

factory in Bermondsey is worth 380 artists are based. The arts

:12:03.:12:07.

organisation which rents out the studios had hoped to remain here for

:12:08.:12:12.

several more years. So, news of the owners had sold the building to a

:12:13.:12:14.

high`end property developer came as a shock. It is the speed at which

:12:15.:12:21.

regeneration is happening, and being pushed out of the centre. You can

:12:22.:12:24.

never settled, you can never be secure in a building. Artists

:12:25.:12:28.

studios always start developing ties and links with the communities,

:12:29.:12:33.

projects which happen, but when you are constantly being moved, you

:12:34.:12:36.

can't. The property boom makes it easier to convert commercial sites

:12:37.:12:42.

into homes and putting London's artists community under a huge

:12:43.:12:45.

strain. Most artists live below the poverty line and can't begin to

:12:46.:12:49.

compete with London's rapidly escalating property prices. Some are

:12:50.:12:55.

now leaving the capital altogether. Purfleet in Essex is about 20 miles

:12:56.:12:58.

from Bermondsey. This production centre is home to a number of

:12:59.:13:03.

artists including Philip, a sculptor who lives in Hackney but now works

:13:04.:13:08.

here. I wanted to move back to London and looked for quite some

:13:09.:13:12.

time, trying to find somewhere suitable for me. There's lots of

:13:13.:13:14.

artists studios available, but pretty much far too small for what I

:13:15.:13:21.

need. And far too expensive. His studio belongs to a charity which

:13:22.:13:26.

owns and manages hundreds of artists bases across London. For many years,

:13:27.:13:30.

it specialised in taking over rundown buildings and recently,

:13:31.:13:34.

though, it started working with a small number of developers on

:13:35.:13:36.

including affordable artist work spaces into their new builds. It's a

:13:37.:13:41.

model the founder wants to see more of. The developer gets the planning

:13:42.:13:47.

consent and makes a profit and creates affordable housing, and we

:13:48.:13:52.

get permanent affordable studios which are high quality because they

:13:53.:13:55.

are new build and the local authority and London gets a

:13:56.:14:01.

permanent cultural resource. Bus schemes like these take time and

:14:02.:14:05.

support from planning authorities. In the meantime, London's artists

:14:06.:14:08.

are being priced out of the very areas that they helped transform. If

:14:09.:14:26.

there was any doubt over the strength of feeling about plans to

:14:27.:14:29.

move the skateboard park at the Southbank after decades of use, then

:14:30.:14:32.

a 60,000 signature petition has sent out a clear signal. Campaigners have

:14:33.:14:38.

also made thousands of objections to the area's redevelopment arguing the

:14:39.:14:41.

skateboard park should stay where it is because it's culturally

:14:42.:14:44.

significant. Warren Nettleford is on the South Bank for us now.. Take a

:14:45.:14:48.

look at this. You can see how well used on this basis. It indicates why

:14:49.:14:50.

people feel so strong you buy this area should not move. The concrete

:14:51.:14:53.

may be moved and they feel that area is theirs and that's why they feel

:14:54.:14:57.

it should not move. They live for skating. Biko has been here for 15

:14:58.:15:03.

years and Amelia is more of a newcomer. They also have something

:15:04.:15:07.

else in common. Anger at plan they say will affect the area's cultural

:15:08.:15:12.

identity. This place is hallowed ground and has been loved and skated

:15:13.:15:16.

every single day. It's not a skate park. It wasn't purpose`built for

:15:17.:15:21.

skateboarding but the skateboarders are made of their home. It's such a

:15:22.:15:26.

natural space, not just for us but for graffiti artists and whoever

:15:27.:15:30.

wants to come here. For me with my long board, even and you can't

:15:31.:15:46.

recreate that. the need to convert this area into retail space. It is

:15:47.:15:51.

important culturally the skaters stay at Southbank Centre, that is

:15:52.:15:53.

why we are building a new space. Do I think it is more important that

:15:54.:15:57.

they stay in that particular undercroft rather than thousands and

:15:58.:16:01.

thousands of other young people have access to opportunities? I don't

:16:02.:16:05.

think that is more important. Already more than 60,000 have signed

:16:06.:16:09.

a petition against the plans and now they have more signatures. This time

:16:10.:16:14.

individual planning objections. In these boxes there are 23,000

:16:15.:16:21.

signatures. These skaters feel about the issue. We have 100,000 people

:16:22.:16:26.

who have subscribed to the preservation statement and public

:16:27.:16:30.

opinion is huge. People have gathered today and we have immense

:16:31.:16:34.

support. It could be some time until the council make their final

:16:35.:16:36.

decision. Until then, the skating goes on. Where it always has.

:16:37.:16:43.

Those campaigners delivered 24 of those boxes to Lambeth town hall

:16:44.:16:46.

earlier today and will wait to see what the council has to say when

:16:47.:16:49.

they make their decision. The Southbank Centre say the new

:16:50.:16:52.

skateboard park is only 100 metres away and put it will be better than

:16:53.:16:57.

before and they are working with an architect to make sure their new

:16:58.:17:00.

centre is better than before but these skaters here are not

:17:01.:17:06.

convinced. Football and Championship side

:17:07.:17:09.

Queens Park Rangers have been granted planning permission to build

:17:10.:17:12.

a new training ground in west London. The proposed site is that

:17:13.:17:17.

Warren Farm in Southall. Chris Slegg has been following developments.

:17:18.:17:21.

It is good news for QPR. They are trying to get back to the Premier

:17:22.:17:25.

League. They have ambitious plans for the future. They announced last

:17:26.:17:28.

month they want to build a new stadium. That is a long way off but

:17:29.:17:32.

today, planning permission to build this new training complex and

:17:33.:17:40.

Southall, Charlie Austin scored the winner for them yesterday. He and

:17:41.:17:45.

his team`mates currently train at the Harlington complex and they have

:17:46.:17:48.

been trying to get away from there for a long time. The new site is 15

:17:49.:17:54.

minutes eastwards of their, closer into London. They will be a will to

:17:55.:17:56.

benefit from some of the facilities that top clubs get to experience.

:17:57.:18:02.

Ealing Council have been keen to see Warren Farm redeveloped for a long

:18:03.:18:04.

time and that is why they signed this agreement with QPR. QPR say

:18:05.:18:09.

they will be `` there will be scope for community use at their new

:18:10.:18:12.

facility and they hope it will be opening 9016. There was news about

:18:13.:18:19.

an incident which took place at Millwall yesterday? Yes, Millwall's

:18:20.:18:25.

home defeat to Leicester, 3`1, a fan came onto the pitch and appeared to

:18:26.:18:28.

take the flight from the assistant referee. The officials had to go and

:18:29.:18:33.

get a new flag for the game to continue. The fan was arrested and

:18:34.:18:36.

taken to Lewisham police station and today the Metropolitan Police

:18:37.:18:40.

confirmed he has been bailed to appear at Bromley magistrates Court

:18:41.:18:43.

on January the 16th, charged with entering the field of play and was

:18:44.:18:48.

causing criminal damage. We have been hearing about the weather and

:18:49.:18:52.

there could be disruption for football fans this weekend? Yes, a

:18:53.:18:55.

busy weekend of football and Charlton are worried about the state

:18:56.:18:59.

of the pitch at the Valley, not as bad as what we saw at Leatherhead

:19:00.:19:03.

earlier in the programme but there will be a pitch inspection at the

:19:04.:19:08.

Valley tomorrow, at 11am to see whether that match against Oxford

:19:09.:19:12.

can go ahead. That much is still on at the moment but it is very much

:19:13.:19:18.

doubt because of the weather. The name Matthew Flinders may not

:19:19.:19:22.

immediately mean much to you, but he was one of our most intrepid naval

:19:23.:19:27.

explorers. He named Australia but his grave has been a marked police

:19:28.:19:31.

Euston Station. That is about to change. More than ?100,000 has been

:19:32.:19:36.

raised to erect a statue of him, 200 years after his death.

Millions of people passed through Euston Station without knowing they

:19:41.:19:47.

are walking over the grave of one of our most distinguished explorers,

:19:48.:19:51.

Matthew Flinders. Now a statue showing the man who was first to

:19:52.:19:56.

circumnavigate and even named Australia has been commissioned

:19:57.:19:58.

thanks to a fundraising effort by the government of South Australia

:19:59.:20:02.

where Flinders is already a famous hero. We have been really thrilled

:20:03.:20:06.

with the interest and response from the British public and the project

:20:07.:20:10.

is fully funded now, which is terrific. We have raised about

:20:11.:20:16.

?120,000, which will make `` which means the project will go ahead.

:20:17.:20:21.

John Flinders is thrilled his relative is about to get the

:20:22.:20:23.

recognition his family believe he truly deserves, 200 years after his

:20:24.:20:28.

death. We look forward to the opportunity of trying to enhance his

:20:29.:20:33.

reputation and we wanted to put a statue in somewhere that the public

:20:34.:20:38.

could see it and then try and ask questions more about him and what he

:20:39.:20:41.

actually achieved. In Australia there are dozens of statues of

:20:42.:20:47.

Flinders and his cat, trim, who travelled with him. Historian Kate

:20:48.:20:50.

Williams says there are a number of reasons he has been forgotten here.

:20:51.:20:54.

Matthew Flinders wasn't a self publicist. A lot of our great

:20:55.:20:59.

heroes, Lord Nelson, look, they were. They said, I have done great

:21:00.:21:03.

things and put it out there in the newspapers. Matthew Flanders didn't.

:21:04.:21:09.

He died young, only 40. Only `` over the next few months the decision

:21:10.:21:13.

will be made over exactly where the statue will go before it is unveiled

:21:14.:21:19.

in the summer. For most of us having to queue is

:21:20.:21:25.

part and parcel of living in London but are you prepared to stand in

:21:26.:21:29.

line for the privilege of eating out? Well, a growing number of

:21:30.:21:33.

restaurants insist you do exactly that as they adopt a no booking

:21:34.:21:39.

policy in favour of customers having to queue outside. Emilia

:21:40.:21:41.

Papadopoulos has been looking at the trend.

:21:42.:21:47.

The last train home, waiting at the tills and not forgetting Wimbledon.

:21:48.:21:51.

The British are famous for queueing and in London it seems it may be

:21:52.:21:56.

going from bad to worse. The reason? More and more restaurants refusing

:21:57.:21:59.

to take bookings. And this is the result. Here in Soho it is early

:22:00.:22:06.

evening, wet, damp and miserable, but already crowds gathering outside

:22:07.:22:11.

this burger bar. And it's not the only one. It's happening all over

:22:12.:22:15.

the capital. There are rumours it's a trend that's been imported from

:22:16.:22:20.

the states but has it been welcomed? It annoys me because sometimes in

:22:21.:22:24.

the middle of the day you want a book somewhere where you know where

:22:25.:22:27.

you want to go and the last thing you want is to be waiting for

:22:28.:22:31.

something. Me personally, I wouldn't, even on a nice warm

:22:32.:22:36.

evening. If there was somewhere I definitely wanted to go on to try at

:22:37.:22:40.

least once, if the queue wasn't too big I would check it out. I probably

:22:41.:22:44.

wouldn't try again. The no booking is all asleep divides opinion in

:22:45.:22:49.

London. Many diners say it is frustrating but it has provided a

:22:50.:22:53.

safety net for the restaurants. They say protects them from cancellations

:22:54.:22:56.

and no shows and helps keep prices down. Queueing for dinner seems to

:22:57.:23:01.

have become fashionable though some think there could be economic

:23:02.:23:05.

reasons behind it. There are number of theories, one is that housing has

:23:06.:23:10.

become expensive that many people are having to share, young people

:23:11.:23:13.

are having to share and therefore they can't entertain at home, so

:23:14.:23:19.

typically they will go out to eat. Many will be hoping it is the end of

:23:20.:23:23.

line for cues, but it looks like this trend is here to stay.

:23:24.:23:31.

And near extinct kangaroo is among the residents of London Zoo who have

:23:32.:23:35.

been counted today as part of their annual stock take. Hundreds of

:23:36.:23:41.

species live at the zoo and the new arrivals being counted for the first

:23:42.:23:46.

time as a baby tapir, two flamingo chicks and the first spiny headed

:23:47.:23:49.

lizards born in Britain. Now the weather forecast, weather

:23:50.:23:53.

warnings in place and the Thames Barrier closing tonight.

:23:54.:23:58.

There is a lot to think about, more met `` more wet and windy weather

:23:59.:24:05.

tonight, a particular concern towards the south and south`west

:24:06.:24:08.

because of a combination of rain, the high winds and the spring tides.

:24:09.:24:12.

For us, we do have a spell of wet and windy weather to move towards us

:24:13.:24:17.

as we go through this evening. That what is after what was a brief

:24:18.:24:20.

respite today, you can fear that `` you can see the satellite picture

:24:21.:24:25.

this afternoon and cloud has been advancing towards us. We have an

:24:26.:24:28.

area of low pressure pushing another band of wet and windy weather

:24:29.:24:33.

towards us as we speak and you will see the squeeze on the isobars which

:24:34.:24:36.

means we're in for windy weather as we go through not only tonight but

:24:37.:24:40.

through tomorrow as well. Wet and windy spell of weather to come

:24:41.:24:44.

through this evening and overnight. Still dry in many places but if I

:24:45.:24:48.

step back you can see the rain is starting to sweeping and as it comes

:24:49.:24:52.

in it will be heavy. It clears away quickly. Gone by the early hours of

:24:53.:24:58.

tomorrow morning. Temperatures overnight, not a cold start to

:24:59.:25:03.

things tomorrow but a gang of showers banding together in the line

:25:04.:25:07.

sweeping through rush hour. They will be heavy as they come through,

:25:08.:25:13.

particularly with hail mixed in to watch for those and more showers to

:25:14.:25:17.

come as we go through the afternoon. Dry interludes but the wind will

:25:18.:25:22.

pick up through the day. Gusts of 30 or 40 miles an hour as we go through

:25:23.:25:25.

tomorrow afternoon. Even in the drier spells. We will continue with

:25:26.:25:29.

showers through tomorrow evening and into the first part of the night,

:25:30.:25:32.

into Saturday morning. Showers keep going all the time perhaps the slot

:25:33.:25:39.

before we reach breakfast time on Saturday morning because then this

:25:40.:25:42.

area of rain makes its way up from the near continent and this will be

:25:43.:25:46.

quite heavy for first thing on Saturday morning. Watch as it sweeps

:25:47.:25:50.

through towards the north`east. A damp start to the weekend. It will

:25:51.:25:54.

be windy, plenty of rain to watch out for. Before things start to

:25:55.:25:58.

improve a little for Saturday afternoon. But again, like we have

:25:59.:26:03.

just seen, it is a brief respite. We have a trough feature giving showers

:26:04.:26:08.

in the early hours of Sunday morning and another system winding itself up

:26:09.:26:11.

out towards the south`west, the squeeze on the isobars says we have

:26:12.:26:17.

a web and windy spell. `` wet and windy spell. No letup for the next

:26:18.:26:22.

few days. Tomorrow, early showers for rush hour and further showers in

:26:23.:26:25.

the afternoon and wet weather on Saturday morning and yet more wet

:26:26.:26:29.

and windy weather for Sunday. That is a lot of rain heading our way.

:26:30.:26:31.

Thanks very much. The main headlines, tidal surges and

:26:32.:26:40.

high winds are threatening coastal areas. The Environment Agency has

:26:41.:26:45.

issued flood warnings indicating a danger to life. The Thames Barrier

:26:46.:26:48.

will close late tonight, rising River belle is also in Surrey are

:26:49.:26:53.

being monitored. `` rising River levels in Surrey are being

:26:54.:26:58.

monitored. There has been criticism of the rising fares, the average

:26:59.:27:01.

season ticket has gone up by over 3%, the smallest increase in four

years but critics say fares are rising faster than wages. Nigella
