Good evening. One of London's most notorious gangs has been targeted in

a series of nationwide raids from Lambeth to Edinburgh. The GAS gang

is believed to be responsible for up to three quarters of all violent

crime in parts of south London. This morning's operation was aimed at

what was described as senior, high ranking members. It led to almost 30

arrests. She became the innocent face of London's struggle with

violent gang crime. One moment she was dancing in her

uncle's shop and next sprawled on the floor, shot in the chest in a

botched gang shooting. A member of the notorious GAS gang pulled the

trigger. Today the Metropolitan police swooped on its senior ranks.

The so`called untouchables of this gang received an unexpected early

morning visit. At 5:30am 700 police officers descended on addresses

around the UK. They raided homes in Scotland, Bedfordshire, Essex and

the Thames Valley, but the heart of the gang operated out of south

London. Nine properties were raided in Brixton and 29 people arrested.

The gang is suspected of drug dealing, money`laundering,

immigration offences and serious violence. Some members are serving

sentences for murder and serious violence and crime. We have seen

significant reductions in all of those offences in London, but this

gang continues to cause harm in London. The actions and the people

we have taken out today are senior members. The Met has been criticised

of only targeting the foot shoulders of gangs. Daschle foot soldiers. In

the past individuals have complained about gang related individuals being

arrested and the next day they are on the streets. It is very important

the right individuals are arrested and put behind bars. Members of the

gang have been convicted of a series of murders, including this boy

hunted and stabbed by what the piece called was a pack of animals. One

former high`level gang members says the police can only do so much.

There will be always youngsters who are willing to step in their shoes

as quick as possible, so it will never be eradicated. This gang

culture thing has to be eradicated. I take my hat off to them. The

Met's operation Trident be launched as a gang initiative admits there is

more to do. Investigators say a father and

daughter from Wandsworth who were killed in a speedboat accident in

Cornwall died after he took the controls from his wife, but the

Marine Accident Investigation Branch said Nick Milligan's wife Victoria

should have been wearing a safety device which would have cut the

engine. This was the moment the Milligan family boat was left

spinning out of control. It was at Padstow in Cornwall in May last year

when they were enjoying a day by the sea. All six members of the family

were thrown into the water. Nick and eight`year`old Emily were killed

when the vessel run over them. Mamma Victoria and her four`year`old

daughter suffered serious injuries and the two older daughters minor

ones. The official report concluded that Nick Milligan had let his wife

take control of the boat and it powered off away from the beach. The

kill cord which should have stopped the engine was not worn and the boat

continued to circle over the family resulting in the tragic death of two

of them. Kill cords are standard issue in smaller, ' designed to be

standard and quick. This is the kind of the boat the family were in, a

vessel capable of doing 40 knots. Each time the boat goes out the

skipper should be attached to kill cord, so if she is put out of

action, this is what happens. The engine is cut. Not everyone supports

them to make compulsory. We believe that making sure people are aware of

the hazards and better promoting the use of kill cords is the way

forward. Today the family released a statement saying, we are still

coming to terms with this tragic accident which has left us without

Nick, a loving husband, father and son and brother and Emily whose life

was only just beginning. We hope the winners of this accident means that

any other family do not have to go through anything similar. Today's

report says kill cords should become second nature when taking the helm

of powerboats. All lorries in London could be forced to have safety

equipment installed by the end of this year to protect cyclists and

pedestrians. The proposal will ensure every HGV is fitted with side

guards to protect cyclists from being dragged under the wheels.

Lorries could also have special mirrors to give drivers a better

view of the road. It has got to be one of the most unusual places to

grow herbs and vegetables, but a small farm has been set up

underground, below Clapham in an old World War II tunnel and it has taken

two years to get the environment just right. The produce will be sold

across shops in London. Today the statistics confirmed what

we already knew. January has been a very wet month in deeds and across

London and the South East we have seen twice the average that we see

in January. Tonight there are a few showers towards the south and east.

We will see a few mist patches develop and temperatures drop below

freezing in rural areas. Tomorrow morning many places will stay dry.
