The stars of the British Olympic and Paralympic teams get ready to | :00:12. | :00:19.
take part in a victory parade. This is the scene live as thousands | :00:19. | :00:24.
gather to celebrate the success of the British teams. I think it's | :00:24. | :00:28.
given the country a tremendous lift. I think it's brought the country | :00:28. | :00:32.
together. I think it's given us memories that we will be talking | :00:32. | :00:41.
about for years and generations to come. Other news, the bomb squad | :00:41. | :00:46.
are called in as a cordon is extended around the Surrey home of | :00:46. | :00:49.
the couple shot dead in France. And union bosses threaten | :00:49. | :00:51.
coordinated mass strikes and civil disobedience, unless the Government | :00:51. | :00:58.
changes course. Later on BBC London: One last celebration after | :00:58. | :01:01.
the triumphant summer of sport. Londoners gather to hail the most | :01:01. | :01:11.
:01:11. | :01:30. | ||
successful Olympic and Paralympic Good afternoon and welcome to the | :01:30. | :01:36.
BBC News at One. Tens of thousands of people are lining the streets of | :01:36. | :01:39.
Central London to celebrate Britain's Olympic and Paralympic | :01:39. | :01:43.
athletes, who are taking part in a victory parade beginning in just | :01:43. | :01:50.
under half an hour. 21 open-top floats with around 750 athletes on | :01:50. | :01:54.
board will make their way through the capital arriving in front of | :01:54. | :02:00.
Buckingham Palace. The Mayor of London has promised a glorious | :02:00. | :02:04.
Miasma of colour noise and excitement. | :02:04. | :02:08.
Let's tell you where the route goes. It sets off from mansion House in | :02:08. | :02:12.
the City of London just after 1.30pm. Members of the public can | :02:12. | :02:16.
watch the floats as they pass St Paul's Cathedral, along Fleet | :02:16. | :02:20.
Street and into the Strand before reaching Trafalgar Square. A big | :02:20. | :02:26.
screen will be put at the base of Nelson's Column. It will broadcast | :02:26. | :02:31.
the parade live. The route then moves down the Mall. That part is | :02:31. | :02:34.
reserved for volunteers, emergency services and those who helped with | :02:34. | :02:38.
the Games. It ends here with a fly past over Buckingham Palace. Let's | :02:38. | :02:41.
go to the start of the route, as the athletes and organisers prepare, | :02:41. | :02:47.
and join our correspondent, James Pearce. It's fantastic to be | :02:47. | :02:51.
standing here at the start. The atmosphere has been building since | :02:51. | :02:54.
early morning, people coming out to cheer. Can you see already the | :02:54. | :02:58.
floats now starting to go into place. That's the cycling float you | :02:58. | :03:02.
can see in front. Plenty of gold medals on that. The athletes have | :03:02. | :03:06.
been divided up by sports. Can you see the size of the crowds already, | :03:06. | :03:10.
just at the start, lining the route. We're expecting about a million | :03:10. | :03:19.
people to cheer on these athletes. The hard work is done, now is the | :03:19. | :03:22.
time to have some fun, to celebrate the achievements of our athletes, | :03:23. | :03:26.
during a summer, the like of which we've never seen before and few of | :03:26. | :03:32.
us are likely to live to see again. The Olympians and Paralympians have | :03:32. | :03:36.
been arriving all morning. This is their day, a chance for the rest of | :03:36. | :03:40.
us to say well done and thank you. It's an opportunity for the | :03:40. | :03:44.
athletes to thank the public. This isn't really for us, it's for them. | :03:44. | :03:48.
They've made the Games. They've created the atmosphere, supported | :03:48. | :03:52.
the athletes and not just in the venues, out in the streets, in the | :03:52. | :03:56.
pubs, at the public venues. It's been incredible. It's our chance to | :03:57. | :04:00.
wave and thank them for the support. There was doubt whether we would | :04:00. | :04:04.
perform and have this amazing Olympics that we'd talked about. We | :04:04. | :04:08.
delivered on all levels. As athletes we can see children are | :04:08. | :04:13.
inspired. I get a lot of letters and cards from children around the | :04:13. | :04:18.
country. I know the others do as well. It all came to an end last | :04:18. | :04:26.
night, the closing Sir Moany of the Paralympics. Coldplay provided the | :04:26. | :04:29.
soundtrack. The man who made it happen had the opportunity to sum | :04:29. | :04:34.
up the past month -and-a-half. There are some famous words you can | :04:34. | :04:39.
find stamped on the bottom of a product, words that when you read | :04:39. | :04:48.
them you know mean high quality, mean skill, mean creatist -- | :04:48. | :04:52.
creativity. We scam ped those words on the Olympic and Paralympic Games | :04:52. | :04:56.
of London 2012. London 2012, made in Britain. | :04:56. | :05:01.
CHEERING The athletes have been on quite a | :05:01. | :05:05.
journey offer the past months. This afternoon they have just two-and-a- | :05:05. | :05:10.
half miles to go, but they'll savour every minute. These are | :05:10. | :05:13.
memories that need to last a lifetime. | :05:13. | :05:17.
All the crowds here have got their favourites, people they've come to | :05:17. | :05:23.
see. Alongside me now anyone who follows triathlon will want to get | :05:23. | :05:28.
a photo. Alastair and Johnny Brownlee. What does it feel to be | :05:28. | :05:32.
at the start? You can get a brief look at the crowds but there are | :05:32. | :05:36.
bigger crowds to come. We keep getting shocked. How many people | :05:36. | :05:40.
turn up and how many people shout at us. That will continue today. | :05:40. | :05:44.
Already we've seen a bit of it. Even walking here from the train | :05:44. | :05:50.
station it's been busy. We'll see how it goes. This is what makes it | :05:50. | :05:54.
all worthwhile. Yeah it is special to see all these people come out | :05:54. | :05:57.
and support us. The Olympics was a great few weeks for everyone | :05:57. | :06:01.
involved in sport to. Experience that again is even better. During | :06:01. | :06:05.
the race we couldn't take it in. We were working so hard and focused on | :06:05. | :06:09.
the race to. Come here and people chanting our names is pretty | :06:09. | :06:12.
special. Has anything changed since the Olympics? You're better known | :06:13. | :06:16.
now than even two months ago. a lot has changed. We get | :06:16. | :06:22.
recognised a lot more. We can't do anything wrong. When I go out | :06:22. | :06:26.
running, we get shouted at. When we're cycling people beep us in | :06:26. | :06:30.
cars. At restaurants people want photos. That's changed completely. | :06:30. | :06:36.
That never happened before for a tri athlete. When we're at home, we | :06:36. | :06:39.
could the same training we have done before, it is normal in that | :06:39. | :06:45.
way. Thank you so much. Enjoit parade. -- enjoy the parade. | :06:45. | :06:49.
Everyone's clapping, cheering. As every athlete comes out they get a | :06:49. | :06:52.
round of applause. More of this through the afternoon. | :06:52. | :06:59.
James, thank you. We will be returning to the London 2012 parade | :06:59. | :07:03.
later in the programme. Other news first. | :07:03. | :07:06.
Army bomb disposal officers have spent the morning at the home in | :07:06. | :07:09.
Surrey of a British couple, shot dead in France last Wednesday. | :07:09. | :07:14.
People living near the house in Claygate have had to move out while | :07:14. | :07:16.
the search continues. Our correspondent Keith Doyle is there. | :07:16. | :07:23.
What's happening? Yes, well a dramatic morning here in Claygate. | :07:24. | :07:28.
Day three of the search of the al- Hilli home. Pretty early on this | :07:28. | :07:31.
morning the police suddenly quickly and dramatically said there was a | :07:31. | :07:36.
cordon. They moved the media away. They evacuated some of the | :07:36. | :07:39.
surrounding homes. The neighbour has to come on the street, move | :07:39. | :07:44.
away from their homes. Then the bomb disposal team from the Royal | :07:44. | :07:47.
Logistic Corps arrived. They were here for a couple of hours. We | :07:47. | :07:52.
understanding they were focused on an outbuilding, a work shop at the | :07:52. | :07:56.
back of the home. They apparently looked at something in there. The | :07:56. | :08:00.
police said due to our concerns about the items found at the home | :08:00. | :08:04.
the police have evacuated neighbours. They said they were | :08:04. | :08:07.
looking for a potentially explosive substance. Obviously they | :08:08. | :08:10.
discovered that was not an immediate threat. They have moved | :08:10. | :08:14.
off. In other developments, reports are coming from France saying that | :08:14. | :08:17.
part of this investigation, the police have discovered that all the | :08:17. | :08:20.
bullets fired last Wednesday killing the al-Hilli family came | :08:20. | :08:24.
from the one weapon. A significant development on the investigation | :08:24. | :08:27.
there, as the investigation continues here. | :08:27. | :08:34.
Thank you. Union leaders have threatened the | :08:34. | :08:39.
Government with mass strike action and civil disobedience unless it | :08:39. | :08:45.
abandons austerity measures. This morning the TUC voted in favour of | :08:45. | :08:48.
coordinated industrial action if public sector pay talks break down. | :08:48. | :08:52.
From Brighton, here's our industry correspondent, John Moylan. | :08:52. | :08:57.
# For the union makes us strong # . The past year has seen a surge in | :08:57. | :09:01.
unrest. There are signs of more to come. The TUC is planning a huge | :09:01. | :09:05.
demonstration next month against austerity. But one by one, union | :09:05. | :09:08.
leaders lined up to say that campaign had to go further. The way | :09:08. | :09:12.
to really shock the Government is to follow up the demonstration on | :09:12. | :09:18.
October 20th as quickly as we can with mass coordinated strike action. | :09:18. | :09:25.
Make that demonstration a catalyst of a mighty campaign of protest, | :09:25. | :09:29.
direct action, civil disobedience and strike action. Trade unions | :09:29. | :09:31.
believe that they're a force for good in the economy and | :09:31. | :09:35.
particularly in the work place. But even as they meet, the Government | :09:35. | :09:38.
has been announcing plans to shake up regulations which are designed | :09:38. | :09:46.
to keep us safe at work. The plans announced today will see up to | :09:46. | :09:50.
3,000 regulations overhauled or scrapped. Hundreds of thousands of | :09:50. | :09:53.
smaller businesses will be exempt from health and safety skpections. | :09:53. | :09:56.
Rules for claiming compensation against companies will be toughened | :09:56. | :10:01.
up. We have the economy now lifting itself out of recession. We need to | :10:01. | :10:04.
do everything we can to support business to create the jobs of the | :10:05. | :10:09.
future. But unions see no sign of the economy turning around. In his | :10:09. | :10:13.
last speech to congress as leader of the TU cufr, Brendan Barber | :10:13. | :10:16.
launched a scathing attack on the Government's handling of the | :10:16. | :10:20.
economy. It's time for change The Bells O Peover Government strategy | :10:20. | :10:26.

change. The Government strategy is failing Britain. The economy is on | :10:29. | :10:37.
its knees. This remarkable summer of cooperation and unity now looks | :10:37. | :10:45.
set to be replaced by division and strife. | :10:45. | :10:50.
That's the news this lunch time. Let's return to the parade of the | :10:50. | :10:54.
Olympic and Paralympic athletes. The event also recognises the | :10:54. | :10:57.
contribution of all the volunteers, or Games Makers. Our correspondent | :10:57. | :11:04.
Robert Hall has been meeting some of them. He's in Trafalgar Square. | :11:04. | :11:09.
Yes indeed. Plenty of those purple and red uniforms amongst the crowd. | :11:09. | :11:12.
They're still arriving. Some people have followed this festival since | :11:12. | :11:16.
the flame first arrived back in May. Some of them were lucky enough to | :11:16. | :11:20.
watch the closing act last night. No-one wants to miss the tur kin -- | :11:20. | :11:28.

experience. Have a good day. year-old Dan left his job at a golf | :11:33. | :11:38.
course to volunteer. He left the Olympic Village with new friends | :11:38. | :11:41.
and self-confidence. I didn't used to be so outgoing with people and | :11:42. | :11:45.
chaty. It's made me more of a confident person. It's really a | :11:45. | :11:50.
great experience to be part of, just especially seeing as it's in | :11:50. | :11:54.
the home kuntri. -- country. It's been great. Dan and his colleagues | :11:54. | :11:59.
were left in no doubt of public opinion. Last night at plauz in the | :11:59. | :12:03.
stadium thundered across East London. Today the Prime Minister | :12:03. | :12:07.
echoed that. What a golden summer for our country. It's given the | :12:07. | :12:12.
country a lift. It's brought the country together. I think it's | :12:12. | :12:16.
given us memories that we will be talking about for years and | :12:16. | :12:20.
generations to come. Along the parade route, early arrivals were | :12:20. | :12:23.
staking their positions. It's the greatest thing that's ever happened | :12:23. | :12:29.
in Britain, for me. I'll never see it again in my lifetime. I think | :12:29. | :12:34.
it's been brilliant for the children, because she's already | :12:34. | :12:40.
saying "When I win a Gold Medal..." It's lifted everyone's spirits. | :12:40. | :12:44.
Around the parade Dan and his fellow Games Makers were asembling | :12:44. | :12:50.
for what may be their last great reunion, time to reflect on a game- | :12:50. | :12:55.
changing summer. It's fantastic, but it's sad to be at the end of it. | :12:55. | :12:59.
No better excuse for a party within a party. | :12:59. | :13:03.
Well, you know what, what's struck me about this is the way which | :13:03. | :13:08.
we've all been drawn in. Tomorrow perhaps a return to reality. This | :13:08. | :13:13.
perhaps also is the end of that perfect sporting summer. | :13:13. | :13:20.
Thank you very much. It's been an ma -- amazing summer | :13:20. | :13:26.
for Team GB. Let's see what it's been like for two of the stars, | :13:26. | :13:31.
Sarah Storey and Ed Clancy who won gold in the Olympic cycling team | :13:31. | :13:35.
pursuit and bronze in the Omnium. COMMENTATOR: What a ride this is! | :13:35. | :13:41.
The crowd are going ballistic. reception from everyone, not just | :13:41. | :13:44.
close friends and family, cyclists, the whole of GB, the home Olympics | :13:44. | :13:49.
just went down so well, you know. People who no interest for Olympic | :13:49. | :13:53.
sport before are mad for it. It's great that I can make a living out | :13:53. | :13:57.
of riding my bike, even if I was rubbish, I'd still try to scrape a | :13:57. | :14:02.
living. The fact that we've had that opportunity of a home Olympics, | :14:02. | :14:05.
I guess, perhaps at peak of my career, is something that's not | :14:05. | :14:09.
going to happen again. I'm just grateful that we had the | :14:09. | :14:13.
opportunity and we capitalised on COMMENTATOR: She's coming into the | :14:13. | :14:19.
straight. Very much mission accomplished. We wondered if it was | :14:19. | :14:24.
possible 500 metres up to the road race. Darren Denny did it in | :14:24. | :14:27.
Beijing. I knew it was possible, four golds in seven days, so | :14:27. | :14:34.
chuffed. The velodrome was so noisy. Being able to have friends and | :14:34. | :14:37.
family and people who have always watched on TV and not been able to | :14:37. | :14:42.
be there and to have them at the stadium and Brands Hatch was superb. | :14:42. | :14:45.
I hope we carry momentum into the future and the next generation | :14:45. | :14:49.
carry that on and pass that down to their kids. I'm honoured to have | :14:50. | :14:54.
competed for my country. This is my sixth Games. I still feel like a | :14:54. | :14:58.
14-year-old inside. Every time that we've seen a medal won, seen a | :14:58. | :15:01.
medal lost, it's been about sport, not disability or impairment. | :15:02. | :15:05.
That's the most fantastic thing. Hopefully the wider public have | :15:05. | :15:08.
been, have embraced the Games and had their inspiration taken from | :15:08. | :15:11.
that as well as our Olympic colleagues as well. It's been that | :15:12. | :15:21.
fantastic six weeks of sport that Sarah Storey and Ed Clancy. There a | :15:21. | :15:25.
special programme that will bring you the parade in full. It starts | :15:25. | :15:30.
just before 1.30 on BBC One. Now let's get a look at the weather. A | :15:30. | :15:36.
few clouds are over Buckingham Palace, what is it going to be like, | :15:36. | :15:38.
Palace, what is it going to be like, Sarah? There will be bright spells, | :15:38. | :15:43.
although we can not rule out a light passing shower, it will be | :15:43. | :15:48.
mainly dry. Warm, but not as warm as the weekend. | :15:48. | :15:54.
This week the temperatures are dipping down to average, about 20 | :15:54. | :15:58.
Celsius. For this afternoon for most of us, a fairly cloudy and a | :15:58. | :16:02.
bit of a breezy afternoon. We have wet weather across the north and | :16:02. | :16:05.
western areas for Northern Ireland and Scotland to the far north-west | :16:05. | :16:12.
of the UK. Some sunshine, but feeling chilly at 12 Celsius. The | :16:12. | :16:17.
rain lingering in the south and central parts and to the east of | :16:17. | :16:23.
the Pennines a little brighter, sunshine breaking through. Wet | :16:23. | :16:27.
weather rolling into northern parts of Wales. Cloudy and rain for the | :16:27. | :16:30.
south-west, but into the Midlands, the south-east, the breeze breaking | :16:30. | :16:35.
up the cloud. The temperatures up to 20 Celsius in London. Through | :16:35. | :16:38.
the evening, the next batch of wet weather sweeping in from the | :16:39. | :16:44.
channel, that is joined by a cold front to head to the south and the | :16:44. | :16:47.
east. Then cooler air sweeping in. Tomorrow a mix of sunshine and | :16:47. | :16:51.
showers. This week it is more autumnal, but | :16:51. | :16:54. |
