Good afternoon. Welcome to the BBC News at One. A female police | :01:32. | :01:37.
officer has been shot dead during an operation to arrest a murder | :01:37. | :01:41.
suspect in Greater Manchester. It happened in Hattersley this morning | :01:41. | :01:46.
as police were trying to arrest Dale Cregan who was wanted for the | :01:46. | :01:50.
death of two men at the beginning of the year. Another female officer | :01:50. | :01:55.
has also been critically injured and is in hospital. Let's get the | :01:55. | :02:01.
latest from our reporter in Manchester. What can you tell us? | :02:01. | :02:06.
It was about 11 o'clock this morning that we got reports two | :02:06. | :02:10.
police officers had been shot during an operation in Hattersley, | :02:10. | :02:15.
10 miles east of Manchester city centre on a housing estate. Police | :02:15. | :02:19.
were looking for a Dale Cregan who they wanted in connection with a | :02:19. | :02:23.
gun and grenade attack in Manchester which killed a man, | :02:23. | :02:27.
David Short. They also want to speak to him in connection with the | :02:27. | :02:33.
death of David Shaw's son Mark. In Hattersley police officers arrived | :02:33. | :02:39.
in force. We have got three bomb- disposal vans, police motorcyclists | :02:39. | :02:47.
and there is a helicopter circling overhead. Just before 11 o'clock a | :02:47. | :02:50.
lady living next door has said she heard an explosion in one of the | :02:50. | :02:54.
back gardens and left her hope immediately and shortly afterwards | :02:54. | :03:00.
that is when police officers arrived. As a result of that | :03:00. | :03:05.
explosion and reports of gunfire, one man has been arrested, Dale | :03:05. | :03:10.
Cregan. Residents are visibly upset and are trying to work out what has | :03:10. | :03:14.
happened. They knew police wanted to speak to Dale Cregan and they | :03:14. | :03:18.
say this is a nice estate and they are upset this may give the wrong | :03:18. | :03:22.
impression of what Hattersley is like. Some are concerned because | :03:22. | :03:26.
there is a school nearby and one woman was concerned about her | :03:26. | :03:30.
daughter. The police told her they did not think there was any | :03:30. | :03:36.
specific danger ongoing from this incident. We know now one female | :03:36. | :03:39.
police officer has died and we are told another woman is fighting for | :03:39. | :03:46.
her life in hospital. That is right. At first we heard two officers had | :03:46. | :03:51.
been injured and police did not say whether that involved firearms. | :03:51. | :03:55.
They have confirmed during this operation in Hattersley this | :03:55. | :04:00.
morning as police were going into a house, where you can see the | :04:00. | :04:06.
activity taking place, two police officers were shot. One died and | :04:06. | :04:14.
one has been seriously hurt. Thank you with the latest. Let's take you | :04:14. | :04:17.
straight to Greater Manchester Police and this is what they said | :04:17. | :04:20.
about the death of one female police officer and the other woman | :04:20. | :04:26.
who has been seriously injured. is with great sadness I have to | :04:26. | :04:29.
report a police officer has died and another has been critically | :04:29. | :04:37.
injured as they attended a routine incident in Hattersley. This was | :04:37. | :04:42.
shot Libby for 11:00am this morning. There were reports shots had been | :04:42. | :04:47.
fired close to that address. The two female officers, who were | :04:47. | :04:52.
unarmed, has suffered serious injuries and one of the Cirque | :04:52. | :04:58.
tragically died at the scene. Medical teams were quick on the | :04:58. | :05:01.
scene to provide treatment and armed response vehicles secured the | :05:01. | :05:07.
area as quickly as possible. The second officer has been critically | :05:07. | :05:12.
injured and is currently being treated in hospital. Greater | :05:12. | :05:15.
Manchester police are currently working to inform the families of | :05:15. | :05:23.
both those officers. A short time after this incident 29 year-old | :05:23. | :05:28.
Dale Cregan was arrested as he walked into a police station in | :05:28. | :05:34.
Tameside. He has now been arrested on suspicion of two counts of | :05:34. | :05:38.
murder in relation to the investigations into the murders of | :05:38. | :05:41.
David Short and his son Mark. He has also been arrested on suspicion | :05:41. | :05:50.
of the murder of a police officer. This is a heartbreaking time for | :05:50. | :05:54.
the officers' families and their colleagues and our thoughts are | :05:54. | :06:01.
with them at this most difficult time. This is a tragic day for a | :06:01. | :06:06.
Greater Manchester Police and we are currently working hard, piecing | :06:06. | :06:12.
together exactly what happens at this morning's events. These events | :06:12. | :06:16.
led to one of our officers being murdered and another one lying in | :06:16. | :06:22.
hospital fighting for her life. I understand the community will be | :06:22. | :06:27.
fearful as they hear news of what happens in their community on top | :06:27. | :06:32.
of everything that has happened in recent weeks. I want to reassure | :06:32. | :06:37.
the communities of Tameside that we have armed officers patrolling the | :06:37. | :06:41.
area and patrolling the streets and we aim to keep people as updated as | :06:41. | :06:45.
we possibly can as we work through the rest of this very difficult day. | :06:45. | :06:54.
Thank you very much. We will bring you the very latest on that story | :06:55. | :07:00.
when we get it. Joint operations between NATO and | :07:00. | :07:04.
Afghan troops are to be restricted because of the increase in so- | :07:04. | :07:09.
called green on blue killings. 51 NATO troops have been killed so far | :07:09. | :07:14.
this year by Afghan troops, including two British soldiers at | :07:14. | :07:20.
the weekend. From now won only large-scale operators will be | :07:20. | :07:27.
conducted with Afghan troops. Quentin Somerville is in Kabul. | :07:27. | :07:31.
This is a big change in the way Afghan and international forces | :07:31. | :07:35.
will work together to fight the Taliban. They will only routinely | :07:36. | :07:40.
work together in big missions at battalion level. Anything below | :07:40. | :07:46.
that will be assessed on a case-by- case basis. British and Afghan | :07:46. | :07:51.
soldiers on patrol together fighting the Taliban. These routine | :07:51. | :07:56.
missions will only happen now with senior approval. A dramatic | :07:56. | :07:59.
increase in Afghan troops killing foreign soldiers means the | :07:59. | :08:03.
international mission is keeping its partners at arm's length. | :08:03. | :08:10.
take that very seriously and to be honest have we may be accelerated | :08:10. | :08:15.
that? Yes. Have we stepped back a bit? Yes, but we are not walking | :08:15. | :08:21.
away. The British Defence Secretary denies it is a change in strategy. | :08:21. | :08:25.
There is no change of policy yet. This is a draft order we are | :08:26. | :08:29.
looking at now. But the international mission says it is | :08:29. | :08:34.
not a draft order and it was effective from Sunday. British | :08:34. | :08:39.
forces seem to have been caught unaware by the changes. Yesterday I | :08:39. | :08:43.
asked an urgent question when he came to the Commons and he did not | :08:43. | :08:47.
mention this ad hoc. Either he knew about it and he was hiding it, | :08:47. | :08:51.
which I do not think is the case, or the Americans are not bothering | :08:51. | :08:57.
to tell their allies. This morning the Defence Secretary clarified the | :08:57. | :09:01.
policy in Afghanistan. There has been no change of policy in | :09:02. | :09:07.
Afghanistan. As I told the House yesterday, the security of our | :09:07. | :09:11.
deployed forces in Afghanistan or anywhere in the world remains a | :09:11. | :09:15.
defence priority. The safety of our service personnel is an issue that | :09:15. | :09:20.
all in Government take extremely seriously. There has been a | :09:20. | :09:24.
dramatic rise on the number of green on blue killings, Afghans in | :09:24. | :09:32.
uniform targeting NATO troops. In 2007, just two NATO soldiers died. | :09:32. | :09:38.
In 2011 that figure had jumped to 35. Already this year NATO has lost | :09:38. | :09:43.
51 troops, seven of them British. International troops will only | :09:43. | :09:48.
partner with Afghans on the biggest of missions. Routine patrols have | :09:48. | :09:51.
in effect stop. They will only be approved with the permission of | :09:51. | :09:56.
senior commanders. The core of the strategy has been to train the | :09:56. | :09:59.
Afghans to face the Taliban, but the closer they worked together the | :09:59. | :10:04.
greater the risk. Already foreign soldiers are packing up and heading | :10:04. | :10:10.
home. Most will have gone by the end of 2014. International troops | :10:10. | :10:14.
are stepping back earlier than expected. Soon Afghan forces will | :10:14. | :10:21.
be left to do most of the fighting. This is a change in policy because | :10:21. | :10:24.
previously joint patrols were standard. That is no longer the | :10:24. | :10:28.
case. The reason they have ended is because the risk to British | :10:28. | :10:33.
soldiers, not on the Taliban, but from the Afghans they serve | :10:33. | :10:37.
alongside is increasing. We can speak to our defence | :10:37. | :10:42.
correspondent Caroline Wyatt who is at the Ministry of Defence. There | :10:42. | :10:46.
seems to be some confusion over all of this. How much will British | :10:46. | :10:51.
operations changed? It has been a morning of confusion tried to work | :10:51. | :10:54.
out what this order means specifically for British troops. We | :10:54. | :11:00.
have had clarification from NATO in Kabul and from Philip Hammond the | :11:00. | :11:04.
Defence Secretary. Births are saying what they call prudent but | :11:04. | :11:07.
temporary measures being put in place because of the elevated risk | :11:07. | :11:12.
and they are putting that elevated risk to British and NATO forces | :11:12. | :11:17.
down to the anti- Islamic video that has inflamed tensions in | :11:17. | :11:21.
Afghanistan and elsewhere. But Philip Hammond came out and said | :11:21. | :11:25.
that what is happening now is British forces will be allowed to | :11:25. | :11:29.
carry on with their patrols partnering with Afghan forces and | :11:29. | :11:36.
that has been given the blessing of the commander, a US Marine General. | :11:36. | :11:42.
For the British at least in Helmand there is not a significant change. | :11:42. | :11:45.
But also over the coming days and weeks they will be looking at how | :11:46. | :11:50.
to better protect troops in these kind of cases. They are playing it | :11:50. | :11:55.
down, but it is clear NATO is responding also to what has | :11:55. | :12:00.
happened in those green on blue, friendly forces attacks and they | :12:00. | :12:04.
will be looking very closely at what more they, and also the | :12:04. | :12:09.
Afghans, can do to reduce the risks. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge | :12:09. | :12:13.
have won their legal battle to stock photographs of the Duchess | :12:13. | :12:17.
sunbathing topless being published are distributed again. A court in | :12:18. | :12:21.
France made the ruling this morning and order the magazine to hand over | :12:21. | :12:27.
all the digital copies of the photos were then the next 24 hours. | :12:27. | :12:31.
We can speak to our Paris correspondent Christian Fraser. | :12:31. | :12:36.
It was keenly anticipated and when the order finally came from the | :12:36. | :12:40.
presiding magistrate, it was as predicted. They perhaps went a | :12:40. | :12:44.
little further than some of the experts might have expected. In | :12:44. | :12:48.
this document the royal couple are named as though they were ordinary | :12:48. | :12:55.
citizens. They were the victims, it says, of a gross invasion of | :12:55. | :13:00.
privacy. There is flash photography in this report. | :13:00. | :13:04.
A paradise of Tuvalu, the latest up on the royal tour of the South | :13:05. | :13:09.
Pacific, about as far removed from the controversy in France as it is | :13:09. | :13:14.
possible to get. It is one of the smallest nation states and the | :13:14. | :13:18.
world and there to greet them almost half the 10,000 people that | :13:18. | :13:24.
occupied the islands. They were presented with a coconut form hd | :13:24. | :13:28.
planted by the Queen when she visited in 1982. Perhaps they were | :13:28. | :13:31.
toasting the result of a court decision many miles away that had | :13:31. | :13:36.
just gone in their favour. In France the paparazzi were crammed | :13:36. | :13:43.
around the door of the clerk's office. Are you happy for your | :13:43. | :13:53.
:13:53. | :13:53. | ||
client? Yes, it is a good result, she said. When it came the four | :13:53. | :13:57.
page injunction issued by the magistrates banned any further | :13:57. | :14:02.
publication of the photographs and lawyers were agreed it was the best | :14:02. | :14:08.
possible outcome. The horse is out of the barn, so this is the next | :14:08. | :14:12.
best thing. The damage has been done and they can hope that future | :14:12. | :14:16.
damage will be eliminated. This decision in no way determines the | :14:16. | :14:20.
outcome of the criminal inquiry that will follow up. The | :14:20. | :14:25.
magistrates do state it was an infringement of privacy. What is | :14:25. | :14:29.
unusual they demand the original photographs are returned to the | :14:29. | :14:34.
royal couple. This order is directed at the Italian publishing | :14:34. | :14:38.
group Mondadori. Last night that French lawyer acting for the couple | :14:38. | :14:44.
said the balcony on which they were relaxing on this chateau en | :14:44. | :14:48.
Provence was in no way visible to the naked eye. The only way they | :14:48. | :14:55.
could have seen the dachas is through a long, telephoto lens. The | :14:55. | :15:05.
:15:05. | :15:06. | ||
Duchess is photogenic, but some people say this was an invasion of | :15:06. | :15:12.
privacy. In this robust, lido action he has taken, William has | :15:12. | :15:18.
shown he will not tolerate the same behaviour. In the coming months the | :15:18. | :15:23.
magazine will defend a fool, legal challenge. Today they have lost, | :15:23. | :15:27.
but they knew in these images there was huge profit. It was a | :15:27. | :15:32.
calculated risk that paid off. For a William and Kate the victory sets | :15:32. | :15:42.
down a marker, but in the end it We understand from the public | :15:42. | :15:46.
prosecutor that that has begun here today. He has to ascertain where | :15:46. | :15:51.
the photograph was taken from. At the moment that was a guess. He | :15:51. | :15:54.
needs to ascertain whether public could have seen the balcony and he | :15:54. | :15:58.
needs to work out who the accused is. There is no name in the lawsuit, | :15:58. | :16:02.
the magazine is unlikely to tell the couple who the photographer was | :16:02. | :16:07.
and it's equally unlike think court will make them do so. They protect | :16:07. | :16:10.
sources in France and a court would need to be judged on the fact that | :16:10. | :16:14.
this is of overriding public interest. | :16:14. | :16:16.
Christian Fraser, thank you very much. | :16:16. | :16:20.
Inflation has fallen again thanks to lower gas and electricity bills | :16:20. | :16:25.
and a smaller rise in the cost of clothing. The annual race of | :16:25. | :16:32.
inflation was down to 2.5% in August, here is Hugh Pym. -- 2.6%. | :16:32. | :16:35.
Inflation has been putting a big squeeze on households with prices | :16:35. | :16:40.
rising a lot faster than wages. But it has been moderating and is now | :16:40. | :16:47.
at 2.5%, less than half the rate last autumn. So how do people feel | :16:47. | :16:51.
about that? At the County Show in Berkshire at the weekend, families | :16:51. | :16:55.
enjoyed the sunshine and rural displays and gave us their views on | :16:55. | :16:59.
how they felt about their spending power. I think things do look | :16:59. | :17:03.
better, I think things will improve. But I think everybody's got to keep | :17:03. | :17:08.
positive about it. If your weekly shop costious 5 less, does anybody | :17:08. | :17:13.
really notice that? Over a large figure - probably not. There could | :17:13. | :17:17.
be better news ahead for consumers in future months as price pressures | :17:17. | :17:21.
in the economy ease off again. think from here on for the rest of | :17:21. | :17:25.
the year I expect inflation to stay roughly where it's been at the | :17:25. | :17:29.
current levels. Beyond that, we may see some further moderation | :17:29. | :17:32.
inflation as it returns closer to the Bank of England's target. | :17:32. | :17:38.
But what about longer term and factors which might affect the | :17:38. | :17:41.
inflation outlook? There could be a cloud on the horizon in the shape | :17:41. | :17:46.
of higher food costs. Globally, grain prices and other commodities | :17:46. | :17:51.
have been rising and that could be past on to consumers and so affect | :17:51. | :17:56.
the rate of inflation. Michael farms near Newbury. He's seen an | :17:56. | :17:59.
increase the in what he gets for his own crop as a result of the | :17:59. | :18:03.
global pressures. At the end of last year's season, the prices were | :18:03. | :18:07.
already going up because there were shortages waiting for this year's | :18:07. | :18:11.
harvest. And because of the droughts that there have been even | :18:11. | :18:17.
worse this year, then the prices have continued to go up of most | :18:17. | :18:19.
crops. It's never certain that what | :18:19. | :18:23.
happens in the farm yard and in the agricultural markets will affect | :18:23. | :18:28.
consumers and the prices they pay in the shops, but the warning signs | :18:28. | :18:32.
are there. Three generations of one family, a | :18:32. | :18:36.
baby, its mother and grandmother, have all been killed in a suspected | :18:36. | :18:45.
arson attack in-cum-brarn in Gwent. A 27-year-old man has been arrested. | :18:45. | :18:51.
Let's speak to Jordan Davies who is at the scene now. This blaze broke | :18:51. | :18:57.
out in the early hours of the morning? It did and it's with a mix | :18:57. | :19:00.
of Horton and shock when people have been finding out about this. | :19:00. | :19:04.
When the Fire Service arrived on the scene, they tackled the blaze | :19:04. | :19:08.
and discovered the bodies of 46- year-old Kim Buckley, 17-year-old | :19:08. | :19:12.
Kayleigh Buckley and six month- year-old Kimberley Buckley. It's | :19:12. | :19:15.
believed she just left hospital yesterday. We know a 27-year-old | :19:15. | :19:19.
man from the Manchester area has been arrested on suspicion of | :19:19. | :19:23.
murder and he's currently being held in police custody. | :19:23. | :19:28.
Officers have cordoned off the area and are making house hof house | :19:28. | :19:34.
inquiries. Forensic teams and fire investigators have begun their | :19:34. | :19:37.
investigations and have been gathering at the scene all day. It | :19:38. | :19:41.
will be a while before they come to terms with what's happened here. | :19:41. | :19:45.
Thank you very much. The time is almost 1.20. Our top story: One | :19:45. | :19:48.
female police officer has been killed and another is fighting for | :19:48. | :19:52.
her life after they were shot in Greater Manchester. We'll have the | :19:52. | :20:02.
:20:02. | :20:07. | ||
latest on this breaking story On BBC London: The house where Pink | :20:07. | :20:17.

Floyd lived in the '60s goes up for The trial is under way of the man | :20:17. | :20:20.
accused of supplying a gun to Mark Duggan whose death after he was | :20:20. | :20:24.
shot dead by police sparked last summer's riots. The prosecution | :20:25. | :20:28.
allege Mark Duggan collected the gun from Kevin Hutchinson-Foster | :20:28. | :20:31.
just before he was lived. Matt Prodger reports. | :20:32. | :20:35.
The immediate aftermath of the moment when Mark Duggan was shot | :20:35. | :20:39.
dead by police in Tottenham last year. Captured by a member of the | :20:39. | :20:44.
public, it shows paramedics trying to save his life and police | :20:44. | :20:47.
firearms officers nearby. The shooting sparked the Tottenham | :20:47. | :20:52.
riots which over the next four days spread across London and to other | :20:52. | :20:58.
English cities. The court heard that this man, | :20:58. | :21:01.
Kevin Hutchinson-Foster, supplied Mark Duggan with a gun 15 minutes | :21:01. | :21:05.
before police intercepted the taxi that Mr Duggan was travelling in | :21:05. | :21:08.
shortly before he was shot. The gun, similar to this one, was allegedly | :21:08. | :21:12.
found at the scene. The prosecution said that Mark | :21:12. | :21:16.
Duggan was shot and killed by the police here at Ferry Lane in | :21:16. | :21:18.
Tottenham as a result of his possession of that gun and what he | :21:18. | :21:24.
was thought to be about to do with A week earlier, the court heard Mr | :21:24. | :21:28.
Hutchinson-Foster used the same gun at this hair salon in Hackney, now | :21:28. | :21:33.
under different ownership. He'd pistol-whipped a barber inside and | :21:33. | :21:36.
the blood of both men was allegedly found on the gun. The jury was told | :21:36. | :21:41.
that throughout the three-week trial, it will hear scientific and | :21:41. | :21:44.
eyewitness evidence that Mark Duggan was armed when he was shot | :21:44. | :21:47.
dead by police last year. But it won't be asked to decide whether | :21:47. | :21:52.
that shooting was right or wrong. That's for an inquest to consider | :21:52. | :21:56.
next year. Kevin Hutchinson-Foster denies | :21:56. | :22:01.
supplying the gun. There's been a big rise in the | :22:01. | :22:06.
number of complaints against doctors, particularly against older | :22:06. | :22:09.
male GPs. There were 8,800 complaints across the UK last year, | :22:09. | :22:13.
an increase of nearly a quarter on the year before and a record high. | :22:13. | :22:17.
The Royal College of GPs called the figures disappointing as our Health | :22:17. | :22:23.
Correspondent Dominic Hughes tells Ask the doctor you choose for an | :22:23. | :22:26.
application form... Doctors were once intimidating figures of | :22:26. | :22:31.
authority whose word was rarely challenged. But new figures from | :22:31. | :22:33.
the General Medical Council show the picture today is very different | :22:33. | :22:38.
and complaints against doctors have risen sharply. Last year, there | :22:38. | :22:42.
were nearly 8,800 complaints made against doctors in the UK, an | :22:42. | :22:46.
increase of nearly a quarter on the year before, most often it was male | :22:46. | :22:54.
doctors over the age of 5. Of-p -- 55. The older male issue, there may | :22:54. | :22:57.
be factors we need to look at, there may be factors about their | :22:57. | :23:02.
ability to handle the stress, pressures and also their ability | :23:02. | :23:05.
maybe to communicate effectively at times of increased pressure. | :23:05. | :23:10.
Patients do seem more willing to complain if they feel they haven't | :23:10. | :23:14.
been treated properly. Britain, we are a bunch of complainers quite | :23:14. | :23:18.
frankly, yes, we want the bust in customer service. I would complaint | :23:19. | :23:23.
if I had a doctor that I didn't feel gave me the service they were | :23:23. | :23:28.
required to give. I think people are much more ready to complain | :23:28. | :23:32.
than they used to be. NHS doctors see millions of patients each year, | :23:32. | :23:36.
so the number of complaints represents just a tiny proportion | :23:36. | :23:41.
of all those consultations. The GMC doesn't believe the rise in | :23:41. | :23:46.
complaints means standards are falling. Patient expectations are | :23:46. | :23:49.
rising and therefore they're more lakely to complain about their care. | :23:49. | :23:53.
They are also becoming much more knowledgeable about their care and | :23:53. | :23:57.
they're more likely to challenge doctor who is have to see patients | :23:57. | :24:01.
as partners. The General Medical Council's introduced new procedures | :24:01. | :24:04.
to ensure doctor standards are maintained, including an | :24:04. | :24:07.
independent tribunal service which meets here in Manchester. More | :24:07. | :24:11.
doctors are being investigated and armed with better knowledge and a | :24:11. | :24:14.
greater willingness to complain, patients have ensured the age of | :24:14. | :24:19.
deference to doctors has passed. Now, if you think of going on a | :24:19. | :24:22.
cruise, you would probably imagine heading to the Caribbean or the | :24:22. | :24:25.
Mediterranean. But how about Belfast? The city has become one of | :24:25. | :24:28.
the fastest growing cruise destinations in the world with a | :24:28. | :24:32.
record 43 tourist ships sailing into port this year alone and | :24:32. | :24:36.
giving a welcome boost to the local economy. Here is our Ireland | :24:36. | :24:40.
correspondent, Mark Simpson. The changing face of Belfast. | :24:40. | :24:45.
International cruise ships used to steer clear of these shores. Not | :24:45. | :24:51.
any more. 4,000 passengers and crew were on the latest arrival and this | :24:51. | :24:54.
family from the Philippines couldn't wait to see Belfast for | :24:54. | :24:59.
the first time. We loved the idea of going to the | :24:59. | :25:02.
European countries and Belfast is just one of them, so we took | :25:02. | :25:08.
advantage of that. Can we go now, please?! | :25:08. | :25:13.
This year, a record 43 cruise ships have sailed into Belfast, once | :25:13. | :25:19.
known as Bomb City, it's now visitor numbers that are booming. | :25:19. | :25:22.
Curiosity's a huge driver for tourism and people are curious | :25:22. | :25:24.
about Belfast and Northern Ireland. The political stability's given us | :25:24. | :25:27.
that ability to go to the market place and now say, look what we | :25:27. | :25:32.
have to offer. Belfast has been transformed by the | :25:32. | :25:37.
peace process with a series of new attractions including the recently | :25:37. | :25:40.
built Titanic Centre. It's already had half a million visitors. But | :25:40. | :25:45.
what do the cruise ship tours think of the City? Everyone was friendly | :25:45. | :25:49.
and kind and helpful and we had a lovely time. | :25:49. | :25:54.
Was it what you were expecting? Better. Yes, I would say it was | :25:54. | :25:58.
much better than I expected. Tourism is not just helping the | :25:58. | :26:01.
image of Belfast, it's a financial boost. | :26:02. | :26:06.
These are very difficult times for Northern Ireland's economy. A boat | :26:06. | :26:10.
load of international visitors isn't going to solve those problems | :26:10. | :26:15.
overnight, but it can only help. These are the same waters where | :26:15. | :26:20.
Titanic was launched. 100 years on, Belfast is no longer building ships, | :26:20. | :26:28.
but it is attracting them. Let's have a look at the weather | :26:28. | :26:34.
now with Phil Avery. now with Phil Avery. | :26:34. | :26:36.
Thanks very much indeed. A similar theme to yesterday. I'm | :26:37. | :26:40.
adding into the mix a chilly breeze. The wind has flicked to the north- | :26:40. | :26:43.
west which has consequences to the feel of the day also a bit of a | :26:44. | :26:48.
feel on just where the showers pop up. They run there nicely out of | :26:48. | :26:51.
the Irish Sea or have done this morning through into the north | :26:51. | :26:55.
Midlands. They may creep over to areas south of the wash. There you | :26:55. | :27:00.
see the representation of the wind with a scattering of showers, | :27:00. | :27:05.
mostly across the British Isles. One or two sharp showers around | :27:06. | :27:09.
about the Bristol area and I wouldn't be surprised to see more | :27:09. | :27:14.
running in on the shores of Devon and Cornwall. | :27:14. | :27:18.
Northern and western parts of Wales will have some rain too. | :27:18. | :27:23.
Looking further to the north-west, again there will be that mixture of | :27:23. | :27:26.
Sunni and showers, but not with yesterday's intensity. A similar | :27:26. | :27:32.
prospect for the central belt of Scotland. Plenty of showers to come | :27:32. | :27:36.
across the north-eastern corner of Scotland and the Northern Isles. | :27:36. | :27:40.
Some showers skip across the Pennines, getting down towards the | :27:40. | :27:44.
Wash area. The further south and east you are, the drier and finer | :27:44. | :27:49.
your afternoon will be. Temperatures round about 17 or 18. | :27:49. | :27:55.
Many of the showers will die away, but not all. As the skies begin to | :27:55. | :28:02.
cler, you will certainly have the - - clear, you will certainly have | :28:02. | :28:12.
:28:12. | :28:13. | ||
the autumnal feel. Prone areas in the south with the | :28:13. | :28:18.
risk of a touch of frost, along with other locations. On Wednesday, | :28:18. | :28:22.
the showers running over the Irish Sea to the Greater Manchester area | :28:22. | :28:26.
and North Midlands. A scattering in Scotland and Northern Ireland too. | :28:26. | :28:29.
The temperatures on the sunny side of the street not too bad at all. | :28:29. | :28:33.
Then we change the script on Thursday. Forget about showers, | :28:33. | :28:37.
it's more about persistent rain. The weather front increases the | :28:37. | :28:45.
cloud. Spreading rain across the central third to have British Isles. | :28:45. | :28:50.
The rain will sink its way south during the course of Friday. Sophie. | :28:50. | :28:54.
Thank you very much. Lets's go back to our main story. A female police | :28:54. | :28:57.
officer has been shot dead in Greater Manchester, another is | :28:57. | :29:01.
fighting for her life in hospital. They were attending a routine | :29:01. | :29:04.
incident which has led to the arrest of a wanted murder suspect. | :29:04. | :29:07.
Let's get the latest from our correspondent, Ed Thomas, at the | :29:07. | :29:10.
headquarters of Greater Manchester Police, a tragic day for the whole | :29:10. | :29:14.
force, say graim Police, what more can you tell us about what happened | :29:14. | :29:17.
this morning -- Greater Manchester Police? Yes, GMP say the two | :29:17. | :29:21.
officers were responding to what they say was a routine call. They | :29:21. | :29:28.
were both unarmed. When they got to Abbey Gardens in Hattersley in the | :29:28. | :29:32.
Tameside area, shots were fired. Sa short time later, an officer died, | :29:32. | :29:35.
another one is critically injured in hospital. | :29:35. | :29:40.
A short time later after that, Dale Cregan walked into a police station | :29:40. | :29:46.
and he was arrested. This 29-year- old has been at the centre of a | :29:46. | :29:52.
manhunt here in Greater Manchester, ofrl several hundred officers have | :29:52. | :29:59.
been trying to find him. A 50,000 reward was offered for his arrest. | :29:59. | :30:07.
He's been arrested in relation to murders of two men. He's also been | :30:07. | :30:10.
arrested with the shooting of a police officer. We heard from an | :30:10. | :30:13.
officer here, he said it was a heartbreaking time for the families | :30:13. | :30:18.
and the force. Armed officers are on the streets of East Manchester | :30:18. | :30:20.
in Tameside to try to reassure those who live there. | :30:20. | :30:24.
Thank you very much. In the last few minutes, Theresa May has said | :30:24. | :30:28.
this is a deeply shocking incident, a terrible reminder of the risks | :30:28. | :30:32. |
