The Connecticut shooting - President Obama says he'll use all | :00:11. | :00:16.
his powers to prevent further tragedies. 20 school children and | :00:16. | :00:19.
six adults were killed. The President makes clear he'll re-open | :00:19. | :00:26.
the debate on gun control. cannot tolerate this any more. | :00:26. | :00:32.
These tragedies must end. And to end them, we must change. | :00:32. | :00:37.

Welcome to the BBC News. President Obama says he will use whatever | :01:46. | :01:50.
powers he has to try and prevent further tragedies, following the | :01:50. | :01:54.
mass shooting at a school in Connecticut. Mr Obama told a multi- | :01:54. | :01:58.
-fate vigil in Newtown that the country had to change. 20 children | :01:58. | :02:03.
and six staff were shot dead by Adam Lanza, who then turned the gun | :02:03. | :02:07.
on himself. The first funeral of one of the victims will take place | :02:07. | :02:13.
later today. Our correspondent reports. | :02:13. | :02:17.
A moment for Newtown to come together, after the horror and the | :02:17. | :02:25.
heart-break. An interfaith prayer vigil for the dead. In his role as | :02:25. | :02:30.
the nation's comforter in chief, the President offered this | :02:30. | :02:40.
assurance. I come to offer the love and prayers of the nation. I am | :02:40. | :02:47.
very mindful that words can not match the depths of your sorrow, | :02:47. | :02:51.
nor can they heal your wounded hearts. | :02:51. | :02:58.
I can only hope it helps for you to know you're not alone. | :02:58. | :03:02.
President praised the teachers who died trying to protect their | :03:02. | :03:06.
charges. As families held their children tightly, he said mass | :03:06. | :03:11.
shootings couldn't be tolerated any more. We can't accept events like | :03:11. | :03:19.
this as routine. Are we really prepared to say we | :03:19. | :03:26.
are powerless? In the face of such carnage. | :03:26. | :03:36.
That the politics are too hard? Are we prepared to say such violence | :03:36. | :03:39.
visited on our children, year, after year, after year are the | :03:40. | :03:44.
price of our freedom. As Newtown grieved for the 20 lost children, | :03:45. | :03:54.
:03:55. | :04:04. | ||
Barack Obama named each one. Noah, Caroline, Jessica, Benjamin, | :04:04. | :04:12.
Avielle, Allison, God has called them all home. | :04:12. | :04:16.
Newtown is experiencing heart- rending sorrow. | :04:16. | :04:19.
Watching the President's speech, was an emotional experience for | :04:19. | :04:23.
many. His coming here is very momental. | :04:23. | :04:29.
It means a lot to everybody here. It raises a question that everybody | :04:29. | :04:33.
is thinking about. What else can we do? More should definitely be done. | :04:33. | :04:39.
There's got to be something because there's too many kids dying, too | :04:39. | :04:42.
many shootings. It doesn't belong anywhere. As this town mourns, the | :04:43. | :04:45.
President's call for meaningful action in the wake of these | :04:45. | :04:49.
killings will soon be tested. A senior Democrat will try and | :04:50. | :04:53.
introduce a law to ban assault weapons. The question is whether | :04:53. | :04:57.
the political climate has changed after this tragedy, so that such a | :04:57. | :05:04.
ban can pass. Let's pick that up now with our | :05:05. | :05:11.
correspondent, who joins us from Newtown. How much has the feeling | :05:11. | :05:16.
towards gun laws changed since what happened in Newtown? Well, | :05:16. | :05:21.
unfortunately in America they have seen mass shootings before, but I | :05:21. | :05:26.
think why this one particularly is so different is because it involves | :05:26. | :05:32.
children of such a young age and shot in such a brutal way using an | :05:32. | :05:37.
assault weapon. An assault weapon which had previously been banned by | :05:37. | :05:41.
federal law, but that law had lapsed in 2004. There is talk now | :05:41. | :05:45.
about having that reinstated. Certainly President Obama was here | :05:45. | :05:49.
last night, speaking at that memorial service and he vowed to | :05:49. | :05:53.
use all the powers of his office to make sure that something like this | :05:53. | :05:59.
never happened again. He didn't mention gun control specifically. | :05:59. | :06:01.
But there is increasing pressure for something to be done, possibly | :06:01. | :06:06.
to tighten the laws. Many States over the last few years have seen | :06:06. | :06:09.
laws against guns actually get more lenient. | :06:09. | :06:13.
Thank you. You can find out more about the | :06:13. | :06:17.
debate on gun laws in America and some profiles of some of those who | :06:17. | :06:23.
lost their lives in the Newtown shootings. It's on the BBC News | :06:23. | :06:30.
website. A further 300,000 people are likely | :06:30. | :06:34.
to have been pushed into fuel poverty by Christmas, according to | :06:34. | :06:37.
Government advisers. A household is considered to be fuel poor if more | :06:37. | :06:42.
than 10% of income is spent on Energy Bills. The big six energy | :06:42. | :06:49.
firms have all announced price rises this winter. The annual | :06:49. | :06:54.
direct debit bill per year is 1,000. | :06:54. | :06:57.
It's the perfect Christmas scene. With our energy prices up, and | :06:57. | :07:03.
winter upon us, the last thing many households will want this year is a | :07:03. | :07:08.
white Christmas. The latest figures suggest that a further 300,000 | :07:08. | :07:13.
households will be pushed into fuel poverty by the latest rounds of | :07:13. | :07:19.
energy price hikes. Leaving 6.5 million households classed as fuel | :07:19. | :07:22.
poor. Some suggest the figure could go higher in the years to come. | :07:22. | :07:27.
And it is the vulnerable who suffer most. Over half of them are | :07:27. | :07:32.
pensioners. Around one-third have a disability or a long-term illness. | :07:32. | :07:38.
Around one fifth, or 20%, they have a child under five. With Energy | :07:38. | :07:41.
Bills already at record high levels, this report warns that the plight | :07:41. | :07:46.
of the fuel poor has never be more serious. What's more, there are now | :07:46. | :07:50.
real concerns that in the coming years our domestic Energy Bills | :07:50. | :07:56.
could go higher. Some fear that global gas prices | :07:56. | :08:00.
could be one of the main drivers. The Government's plans for low- | :08:00. | :08:05.
carbon energy will also increase our bills. Today, the energy | :08:05. | :08:11.
regulator confirmed we would all pay an extra 12 on average a year | :08:11. | :08:14.
to upgrade the electricity and gas networks. We know that people are | :08:14. | :08:17.
struggling with their bills. That is something we are very conscious | :08:17. | :08:22.
of. Our plans are designed to make sure that customers pay the minimum | :08:22. | :08:26.
for the necessary upgrades to the infrastructure. | :08:26. | :08:30.
The report calls for a step-change in the energy efficiency of our | :08:30. | :08:35.
housing stock. It warns that in England help for the fuel poor will | :08:35. | :08:42.
be cut by almost half. So what can the Government do? Gas prices will | :08:42. | :08:45.
have doubled by 2007. No-one can do anything about that. I am | :08:45. | :08:49.
determined to do as much as we can, whether on competition, to drive | :08:49. | :08:53.
down energy costs or whether in energy efficiency. That will not | :08:54. | :08:59.
help this Christmas, when for many, there'll be just one way to keep | :08:59. | :09:03.
bills low. The Queen is going to Downing Street tomorrow to attend a | :09:03. | :09:07.
Cabinet meeting as an observer. It is thought to be the first time a | :09:07. | :09:10.
monarch has done so since Queen Victoria's reign. She is expected | :09:10. | :09:15.
to sit next to the Prime Minister. Nick, how much is Downing Street | :09:15. | :09:18.
revealing about what is likely to happen tomorrow? Not a great deal. | :09:18. | :09:27.
It has to be said. The Queen, she has regular meetings with her Prime | :09:27. | :09:32.
Ministers. Perhaps, surprisingly, she has never attended a Cabinet | :09:32. | :09:36.
meeting. No monarch has since Queen Victoria. Tomorrow, the Queen will | :09:36. | :09:40.
come here to Downing Street. The purpose of the visit is to receive | :09:40. | :09:45.
a Diamond Jubilee gift from the Cabinet. They've had a kind of a | :09:45. | :09:48.
whip around and they are not revealing what they have raised or | :09:48. | :09:55.
what that gift is. A previous Government for a previous jubilee | :09:55. | :09:59.
bought her a silver coffee pot. She will join the Cabinet meeting, not | :09:59. | :10:05.
for the 90 minutes, be -- but it is thought for 30 minutes. Downing | :10:05. | :10:10.
Street are saying she will be an observer. She's not expected to | :10:10. | :10:15.
make any contributions. Judging by the sharp questions she asked at | :10:15. | :10:19.
the Bank of England last Thursday, you never know! | :10:19. | :10:23.
Thank you. Nick Clegg has set out the differences between his party | :10:23. | :10:25.
and their coalition partners, the Conservatives. Talking about some | :10:25. | :10:30.
of the themes on which the Liberal Democrats will contest the next | :10:30. | :10:33.
election, the Deputy Prime Minister said they had rejected extreme | :10:33. | :10:38.
welfare reforms and anchored the UK in the political centre-ground. Our | :10:38. | :10:43.
correspondent joins us from Westminster now. | :10:43. | :10:48.
Tomorrow, will be Nick Clegg's fifth anniversary as Lib Dem leader. | :10:48. | :10:50.
He spent half the time in Government, half in opposition. He | :10:50. | :10:54.
said he has kept the Conservatives in the centre-ground of British | :10:54. | :10:59.
politics T problem is it has cost him dear in electoral support. | :10:59. | :11:02.
Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister in lock-step during the | :11:02. | :11:06.
first step of this Government. That is how Nick Clegg describes his | :11:06. | :11:12.
approach to date. Now that is to change and his poll ratings are | :11:12. | :11:17.
down in single figures. He said there'll be more disagreements with | :11:17. | :11:22.
David Cameron in coming months. can be a bit more relaxed and open | :11:23. | :11:27.
about the fact it is a process, a process by which decisions are | :11:27. | :11:30.
reached through deliberations, through argument, through | :11:30. | :11:36.
compromise. The party's future in Government would be in coalition, | :11:36. | :11:40.
said Nick Clegg and the Lib Dems would be those who tempered the | :11:40. | :11:44.
iedlogs of left and right. It is, at times like these, that Britain | :11:44. | :11:49.
needs a party rooted in the centre ground, which anchors the country | :11:49. | :11:53.
there. The Liberal Democrats are that | :11:53. | :11:58.
party. We're not centre-ground tourists. | :11:58. | :12:07.
The centre ground is our home. The strategy had already borne | :12:07. | :12:10.
fruit. It was his presence that stopped the Conservatives from | :12:10. | :12:17.
pushing through a further 10 billion of benefits cuts. We agreed | :12:17. | :12:22.
to update them all in line with the pay raises we can afford from the | :12:22. | :12:27.
public sector from 1%. We rejected the more extreme reforms that had | :12:27. | :12:37.
been put on the table. But after 2015 15 things like the winter fuel | :12:37. | :12:43.
allowance and free TV licenses for the elderly can be cut. It is not | :12:43. | :12:50.
sustainable to somehow say that people, multi-millionaire | :12:50. | :12:53.
pensioners still receive universal benefits across the board. It is | :12:53. | :12:57.
something we need to look at. was a pitch for the centre ground. | :12:57. | :13:03.
The problem is everyone else wants to be there too. Nick Clegg's | :13:03. | :13:08.
likening his new approach to the making of sausages. He wants the | :13:08. | :13:12.
public to know what goes into coalition policy and what he | :13:12. | :13:18.
insists is left out. I guess the taste test will be in the opinion | :13:18. | :13:23.
polls. Thank you. Nearly 60 MPs and peers from all parties have joined | :13:23. | :13:28.
forces to urge the Prime Minister to drop his plans to legalise same- | :13:28. | :13:32.
sex marriage in England and Wales. 35 of the parliamentarians are | :13:32. | :13:35.
Conservative MPs. They have signed an open letter in the Daily | :13:35. | :13:38.
Telegraph newspaper, warning that the Government does not have a | :13:38. | :13:44.
mandate to redefine marriage. The nurse who aparently killed herself | :13:44. | :13:50.
after she took a prank call at the hospital where the Duchess of | :13:50. | :13:55.
Cambridge was being treated has been buried. Her funeral in the | :13:55. | :13:59.
town of Shirva was attended by thousands of people, including | :13:59. | :14:09.
:14:09. | :14:10. | ||
friends and family. Her final journey. Jacintha Saldanha's coffin | :14:10. | :14:14.
arriving at Shirva's church. Her family, joined by friends and | :14:14. | :14:20.
hundreds of well-wishers, as the kas ket is taken in for the service. | :14:20. | :14:25.
This tragedy has been closely followed in India. And the media | :14:25. | :14:29.
were out in full force. It's been the wish of Jacintha Saldanha's | :14:29. | :14:33.
family that the ceremony inside remain private. So many people have | :14:33. | :14:37.
gathered here today to pay their last respects. The police have had | :14:37. | :14:42.
a very hard time controlling the crowds. This is an event that has | :14:42. | :14:47.
devastated this very close, tightly-knit community. Many people | :14:47. | :14:51.
are raising questions, wondering how this could have happened in the | :14:51. | :14:57.
first place. Her final resting place is in this grave at the | :14:57. | :15:01.
Church cemetery. Mrs Saldanha's husband, who brought her body from | :15:01. | :15:05.
the UK, inspected it earlier in the day. The Church service was | :15:05. | :15:10.
proceeded by a private ceremony at the family home. Only those closest | :15:10. | :15:20.
:15:20. | :15:21. | ||
Most families here have a loved one living and working abroad. So this | :15:21. | :15:26.
is a tragedy that has struck home. Many are asking why and what caused | :15:26. | :15:30.
Jacintha Saldanha's death? There is anger and anguish and many | :15:30. | :15:39.
unanswered questions. Our top story: | :15:39. | :15:43.
The Connecticut school shooting, President Obama says he will use | :15:43. | :15:47.
all of his powers to prevent further tragedies. | :15:47. | :15:50.
Coming up: The vulnerability of the local vicar, how some are now | :15:50. | :15:56.
considering closing their doors. On BBC London: The inquest into the | :15:56. | :16:01.
death of singer, Amy Winehouse is to be re-heard. A steam train built | :16:01. | :16:05.
more than 100 years ago has travelled on the tube ahead of a | :16:05. | :16:15.
:16:15. | :16:16. | ||
special service in January. It is a busy time of year for | :16:16. | :16:19.
parish priests. In the run-up to Christmas many ensure that the | :16:19. | :16:23.
doors are open to those who need help and support. Sometimes, though, | :16:23. | :16:29.
that accessability can have dangers. Earlier in the year, the Reverend, | :16:29. | :16:32.
Reverend John Suddards was murdered in his vicarage. His death prompted | :16:32. | :16:37.
concerns about the dangers facing the clergy and their families. | :16:37. | :16:42.
Reverend John Suddards had been the vicar of St Mary's Church in | :16:42. | :16:46.
Thornberry for six months when he was attacked and murdered. He was | :16:46. | :16:52.
well aware of the potential risks that came with the collar and once | :16:52. | :16:55.
discussed the issue with a community radio station. | :16:55. | :16:58.
I think it is very important, the Church has been there for the | :16:58. | :17:03.
people of Thornberry for hundreds of years. We do have to take risks, | :17:03. | :17:08.
but we believe they are the risks we are called on to take. | :17:08. | :17:13.
Risks that just months later would cost his life. Such murders are | :17:13. | :17:16.
rare, but abuse and violence are not. | :17:16. | :17:21.
I came here, there was a big group of lads kicking a football up | :17:21. | :17:25.
against the crucifix here. A football, repeatedly doing it. I | :17:25. | :17:31.
was unnerved by that. So I came out, I grabbed the ball, went inside and | :17:31. | :17:35.
locked the doors. Father Kevin Scully was badly | :17:35. | :17:39.
beaten up at his church in East London. | :17:39. | :17:43.
I raze how close and dangerous the situation had been. How near to | :17:43. | :17:49.
real hurt, and real danger that I was. So that affected the way that | :17:49. | :17:54.
I behaved, especially, I would see groups of lads coming around, I | :17:54. | :17:58.
would lock up the church. I was anxious. I had to seek professional | :17:58. | :18:04.
help. I was unnerved and had lost my confidence. | :18:04. | :18:10.
Now, the number of these attacks can be difficult to categorise. | :18:10. | :18:16.
Academic research in the past, has named the clergy as one of the most | :18:16. | :18:20.
at-risk groups of professionals working in the community. This is | :18:20. | :18:24.
the response. What would happen.if you jumped up | :18:24. | :18:30.
and tried to attack me? Where would I go? The doors are there? These | :18:30. | :18:34.
courses don't teach martial arts, the aim is to prevent situations | :18:34. | :18:38.
escalating to the point of violence, so that priests, and in this case, | :18:38. | :18:43.
their wives and husbands, are equipped to deal with the problems. | :18:43. | :18:48.
If you are aware you are on your own in that vicarage, you are | :18:48. | :18:53.
putting yourself at danger. Say "no", but give an alternative. | :18:53. | :18:57.
For many, that may feel as if it goes against the core beliefs, but | :18:57. | :19:04.
controlling the open door policy may protect them from serious harm. | :19:04. | :19:08.
A police officer has been arrested and suspended from duty on | :19:08. | :19:12.
suspicion of leaking details of the confrontation at the gates of | :19:12. | :19:15.
Downing Street between the police and the former Chief Whip, Andrew | :19:15. | :19:18.
Mitchell. Andrew Mitchell was accused of calling officers plebes | :19:18. | :19:23.
as they would not ride his bike, something that he denies. | :19:23. | :19:26.
Now let's speak with our correspondent. What more do we | :19:26. | :19:30.
know? Good afternoon. Well, Andrew Mitchell has already admitted that | :19:30. | :19:34.
he swore at the police officers who tried to stop him riding on his | :19:34. | :19:38.
bike through the main gates of Downing Street. He apologised for | :19:38. | :19:42.
that and has paid a political price, but he denies calling the officers | :19:42. | :19:47.
morons and plebes, who should know their place. These are the alleged | :19:47. | :19:51.
comments in a police log book about the event and those comments were | :19:51. | :19:57.
leaked to two national newspapers. So the issue is who leaked that | :19:57. | :20:00.
information without authorisation and Scotland Yard says that the | :20:00. | :20:03.
Metropolitan Police got a fresh tip-off on Thursday about this. On | :20:03. | :20:08.
Saturday they arrested a constable with the diplomatic protection | :20:08. | :20:13.
group. He has been suspended and he has been bailed until next month. I | :20:13. | :20:17.
should make the point that this is not one of the officers on duty, | :20:17. | :20:22.
involved in the incident in Downing Street itself at the time. We have | :20:22. | :20:25.
had reaction from the Police Federation saying it expresses | :20:25. | :20:29.
great regrets about the decision to arrest an officer over this. It say | :20:29. | :20:31.
it is hopes that justice will prevail. | :20:31. | :20:37.
Thank you very much. The family of a man shot dead by | :20:37. | :20:42.
police officers have urged the inquiry into his death to declare | :20:42. | :20:46.
that it was an unlawful killing. Azelle Rodney died in April, 2005, | :20:46. | :20:50.
after an armed officer opened fire on the car he was in. The police | :20:50. | :20:56.
believed he had been armed and planning to rob a clopian drugs | :20:56. | :21:00.
gang. -- Colombian. Susan Alexander | :21:00. | :21:05.
described her son's killing as an execution. She had to wait seven | :21:05. | :21:08.
years for the inquiry to get under way as sensitive intelligence | :21:09. | :21:13.
material was involved. This has been the final day of evidence. | :21:13. | :21:17.
Azelle Rodney was 24 when he was shot dead by the police in north | :21:17. | :21:21.
London. One officer fired eight bullets, six hit him in the head | :21:21. | :21:25.
and the body. For weeks his mother listened to | :21:25. | :21:30.
scores of witnesses, including the marksman who fired the fatal shots. | :21:30. | :21:34.
That officer did not give him time to put his hands up, get out or | :21:34. | :21:38.
anything, you know? So, you are supposed to stop and warn somebody | :21:38. | :21:42.
before you do something. He did not do that. | :21:42. | :21:49.
He didn't stand a chance. This footage, filmed from a police | :21:49. | :21:55.
car, recorded the shooting. The police were in pursuit of a | :21:55. | :21:59.
Caruanaying three men, including Azelle Rodney. Officers were | :21:59. | :22:02.
working on intelligence, that the men they were chasing were | :22:02. | :22:06.
respected of being armed with machine guns and on their way to | :22:06. | :22:15.
rip off a Colombian drugs gang. One officer stopped and opened fire. | :22:15. | :22:22.
Sweet as... This is a reconstruction of how the car drew | :22:22. | :22:28.
level with the Gulf and that officer, known only as E7, shot | :22:28. | :22:33.
Azelle Rodney in the back seat. E7 told the inquiry he believed that | :22:33. | :22:37.
the suspect was reaching forward for a weapon to open fire. Guns | :22:37. | :22:42.
were found in the car, but not in Azelle Rodney's hand. One former | :22:42. | :22:45.
Scotland Yard firearms commander, described the judgment call that | :22:45. | :22:49.
the marks men have to make. The police officer is aware that | :22:49. | :22:52.
the time frame that they are working to is about a quarter of a | :22:52. | :22:56.
second. Now that is how long it will take, potentially, for the | :22:56. | :23:00.
person in the car they are approaching to produce and to fire | :23:00. | :23:03.
a weapon. The inquiry chairman will now have | :23:03. | :23:07.
to decide whether the force used against Azelle Rodney was | :23:07. | :23:09.
absolutely necessary. He will produce his report next | :23:09. | :23:15.
year. At least nine girls have been | :23:15. | :23:20.
killed and three others injured in an explosion in Afghanistan. | :23:20. | :23:24.
A spokesperson for the governor of the Nangarhar province in the east | :23:24. | :23:29.
said that the girls were collecting fire wood when one of them hit a | :23:29. | :23:34.
landmine with an axe. The girls were said to have been aged between | :23:34. | :23:39.
nine and 12. The population of Scotland has risen to its highest | :23:39. | :23:44.
level. The ruls from the 2011 Census showed that the biggest rise | :23:44. | :23:52.
was amongst those over 0, but also increases in those under safplt | :23:52. | :23:55.
-- 15. Lorna, what do the figures tell us? | :23:55. | :24:00.
Well, this is a snapshot of what life was like in Scotland on the | :24:00. | :24:06.
27th of March, 2011. It throws up headline figures. The first being | :24:06. | :24:09.
that after 30 years of Scotland's population being stagnant or | :24:09. | :24:16.
declining, it is on the rise once again. Increasing by 233,000 to | :24:16. | :24:20.
just under 5 .3 million, according to the estimates. That means that | :24:20. | :24:26.
the population has increased by 5% between 20 2001 and 2011, the | :24:26. | :24:30.
fastest growth rate between two sensus dates in the last century. | :24:30. | :24:35.
It is also the first sensus when the number of people aged 65 and | :24:35. | :24:41.
over was higher than the number aged under 15. An increase notable | :24:41. | :24:50.
in people aged over 80, where the numbers have increased by 19%. Are | :24:50. | :24:55.
they boring statistic? Well, they are important. They help plan where | :24:55. | :24:59.
the public services are needed most. So what we know is that Scotland's | :24:59. | :25:04.
population is growing older and it is increasing. | :25:04. | :25:10.
Do we know why? As to the increasing, there is a couple of | :25:10. | :25:14.
minor reasons, we found that out today, one is that there are more | :25:14. | :25:19.
children under irthe age of five. There are also more births than | :25:19. | :25:23.
deaths. You don't get the break down in the figures that you had | :25:23. | :25:27.
for England and Wales, but because of earlier work, we know that the | :25:27. | :25:31.
suggestion is that the vast majority of the population increase | :25:31. | :25:39.
is due to migration. As to the ex ct -- exact breakdown of ethnicity | :25:40. | :25:44.
and employment in Scotland, we will not find that out until the summer | :25:44. | :25:46.
of next year. Thank you very much. | :25:46. | :25:50.
The Tour de France winner and Olympic champion, Bradley Wiggins | :25:50. | :25:54.
has been voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year. The Gold | :25:54. | :25:59.
Medal winning help at that time leet, Jessica Ennis was the runner | :25:59. | :26:04.
up and the US Open tennis champion, Andy Murray, came therd. More than | :26:04. | :26:11.
1..5 million votes were cast last night. The five runner up got | :26:11. | :26:17.
100,000 votes each, more than many previous winners. | :26:17. | :26:21.
England's cricketers have won a historic victory, winning a Test | :26:21. | :26:25.
Series in India for the first time in nearly 28 years. Centuries from | :26:25. | :26:29.
Jonathan Trott and Ian Bell helped to secure the draw that they needed | :26:29. | :26:34.
in the fourth and the final match in Nagpur to take the series 2-1. | :26:34. | :26:40.
Alastair Cook said it was a special day for the team. | :26:40. | :26:48.
Try, try, and try again. In India, England persevered, a slow march to | :26:48. | :26:53.
history. However much the country changes, one thing remains. At home | :26:53. | :26:57.
India's cricketers are expected to win. The only chance that they had | :26:57. | :27:02.
of taking the Test was to grab the wickets on Monday morning. Ian Bell | :27:02. | :27:09.
made the first 50 of of the series. Jonathan Trott went on and on. He | :27:09. | :27:14.
was India's irritant. India were not amused. Trt Jonathan Trott | :27:14. | :27:20.
thrives on this situation. At lunch England were nearly 250 runs ahead. | :27:20. | :27:23.
Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott still together. There was not time for | :27:23. | :27:32.
India to bowl England out again. India's tactic of beating England | :27:32. | :27:37.
by spin unravelled. The overwhelming win in the first Test | :27:37. | :27:43.
seemed like a dream. Ian Bell helped himself, but England were | :27:43. | :27:47.
patient. They were hopeless against spin bowling at the start of the | :27:47. | :27:52.
year. Was Kevin Pietersen at home in the dressing room again? It | :27:52. | :27:57.
looked like it. Jonathan Trott fell for 143, there was time for Ian | :27:57. | :28:02.
Bell to get to 100. Then the two teams agreed to a draw and the | :28:02. | :28:07.
series went to England. The new captain had done what no England | :28:07. | :28:10.
can't has managed for nearly 30 years. | :28:10. | :28:16.
It has been an incredible tour. To end it like we did today, to | :28:16. | :28:20.
convincingly bat out, it was a nervous dressing room, knowing how | :28:20. | :28:24.
close we were to doing see so special, but to do it as convincing | :28:24. | :28:28.
I -- convincingly as we did, it was incredible. | :28:28. | :28:34.
This is the kind of result that careers are defined by. | :28:34. | :28:39.
Now let's have a look at the weather. Louise is here. It is | :28:39. | :28:43.
weather. Louise is here. It is brollies up, I'm afraid. | :28:43. | :28:47.
Some of vus seen sunshine, but I suspect that the story is for -- | :28:47. | :28:52.
some of us have seen sunshine today, but I suspect that the showers will | :28:52. | :28:56.
be becoming more widespread. So far the showers have been over North | :28:56. | :28:59.
Wales, north-west England and stretching into the north-east of | :28:59. | :29:03.
Scotland. There is a cluster of a shower | :29:03. | :29:08.
cloud. The two weather fronts are straddled either side of northern | :29:08. | :29:12.
Britain. If you don't have the showers it is grey and damp, but | :29:12. | :29:16.
there are breaks into the central and the southern areas. You cling | :29:16. | :29:21.
on to the best of the sunshine. Then the showers becoming more | :29:21. | :29:25.
widespread. By the middle of the afternoon pushing into the south- | :29:25. | :29:30.
west. Highs of 10 Celsius, but come showers could be sharp. A cluster | :29:30. | :29:35.
of showers over Wales. More waiting out in the wings to push to the | :29:35. | :29:39.
west and the east. For Northern Ireland, not a bad | :29:39. | :29:45.
afternoon. About seven Celsius. Staying cloudy, but also dry. The | :29:45. | :29:51.
same tie for the Great Glen. There are the showers into parts of | :29:51. | :29:55.
Aberdeenshire and to the north-west of the Pennines. Some starting to | :29:55. | :29:59.
migrate to the east. If you continue to see sunny spells in | :29:59. | :30:03.
East Anglia and the London area, I suspect for the evening rush hour | :30:03. | :30:06.
some of the showers could be frequent as they continue to drive | :30:06. | :30:12.
to the west and the east. Accompanied by strong winds in the | :30:12. | :30:17.
south-west, this at the -- they could be up to 50 miles an hour. In | :30:17. | :30:21.
the evening, clearer skies to the west and in the Northern Ireland | :30:21. | :30:28.
and in Scotland freeze ing fog and icy surfaces. | :30:28. | :30:33.
If the fog lingers that will affect the temperatures, further western | :30:33. | :30:37.
areas seeing the best of the brightness. A quiet day on Tuesday. | :30:37. | :30:43.
More cloud into the south-east than today. Highs of five to 10 Celsius, | :30:43. | :30:49.
but all change for Wednesday. More wet and windy weather arriving. | :30:49. | :30:54.
Some significant rainfall likely. The potential may be for up to 30 | :30:54. | :30:57.
millimetres of rain into the south- west. That is pushing to the north | :30:57. | :31:04.
and the east. A wet day in prospect. The highs looking about five to 12 | :31:04. | :31:11.
Celsius. There are more details on the weather online or join me live | :31:11. | :31:13. |
