Large parts a powerful storm batters the UK as the environment agency | :00:08. | :00:16.
warns people to prepare for the worst tidal surge in years. A lorry | :00:17. | :00:23.
driver is killed in West Lothian as winds reach 100 mph. 100,000 homes | :00:24. | :00:28.
are without power. From Northumberland to Kent, thousands of | :00:29. | :00:42.
homes are being evacuated amid warnings that the most serious tidal | :00:43. | :00:45.
surge since 1953 could hit later today The government convenes COBRA | :00:46. | :00:47.
its emergency committee to discuss its response to the storm. The | :00:48. | :00:53.
Chancellor, George Osborne insists Britain's economic plan's working -- | :00:54. | :00:56.
but says the government's job isn't finished. We need to secure the | :00:57. | :01:03.
economy for the long-term and the biggest risk from that comes to | :01:04. | :01:08.
those -- from those who would abandon the plan. In his autumn | :01:09. | :01:13.
statement the Chancellor warned of more difficult decisions ahead and | :01:14. | :01:16.
confirmed millions will have to work longer for a state pension. The | :01:17. | :01:20.
Royal Marine convicted of murdering an injured insurgent in Afghanistan | :01:21. | :01:23.
is named as Sergeant Alexander Blackman. Nigella Lawson tells a | :01:24. | :01:27.
court she'd rather be honest and ashamed about her past drug use | :01:28. | :01:33.
rather than bullied with lies. Here in Adelaide we have had an absorbing | :01:34. | :01:37.
start to the Ashes test match but England will be cursing themselves. | :01:38. | :01:45.
The latest round of high legal battle not to be forced to work on a | :01:46. | :01:54.
Sunday. Hounslow Council decide tonight whether to give Brentford | :01:55. | :02:08.
football club their new stadium. Good afternoon and welcome to the | :02:09. | :02:12.
BBC News at One. Thousands of people are being told to prepare to leave | :02:13. | :02:15.
their coastal homes after warnings that the biggest tidal surge for 60 | :02:16. | :02:18.
years could hit tonight. Vicious winds have been battering much of | :02:19. | :02:21.
Scotland, Northern England and Wales, and Northern Ireland. A lorry | :02:22. | :02:24.
driver died in West Lothian when his vehicle was blown over in winds of | :02:25. | :02:30.
up to 100 miles an hour. Scotland's entire rail network has been shut | :02:31. | :02:33.
down and 100,000 homes have no power. In Essex, the entire seaside | :02:34. | :02:38.
village of Jaywick, near Clacton-On-Sea, is already being | :02:39. | :02:46.
evacuated. We'll have the latest from our correspondents around the | :02:47. | :02:49.
UK - but our first report is from our Scotland Correspondent, James | :02:50. | :02:55.
Cook. The storm swept in just before dawn with gusts of more than 100 | :02:56. | :03:01.
mph. It could not have peaked at a worse moment, the height of the rush | :03:02. | :03:05.
hour, leaving motorways locks and thousands of people stranded. The | :03:06. | :03:10.
Forth Road Bridge was closed to all traffic except, it seems, for one | :03:11. | :03:16.
lone cyclist, taking his life in his hands. The highest recorded wind | :03:17. | :03:24.
speed was 91 mph. We risk assessed the situation and cleared the | :03:25. | :03:27.
traffic from the bridge and we thought it was too dangerous to | :03:28. | :03:31.
leave anyone on the bridge. It was dangerous elsewhere. This accident | :03:32. | :03:36.
claimed the life of a lorry driver. His vehicle had been blown onto | :03:37. | :03:41.
these two cars. There were similar scenes across the central belt as | :03:42. | :03:45.
the emergency services battled to free people from the wreckage. It is | :03:46. | :03:52.
still not clear how may people have been injured. The railways have been | :03:53. | :03:59.
hit as well. Glasgow Central Station was closed after debris hit the | :04:00. | :04:05.
roof. The entire network came to halt. I was in the room and the | :04:06. | :04:13.
window flew open, the alarm started going. I am sure it will be fine, | :04:14. | :04:19.
there are lots of delays. You cannot do anything about it, can you? At | :04:20. | :04:23.
the height of the storm, the power companies said 130,000 homes are | :04:24. | :04:30.
without electricity. 50,000 in the South of Scotland, 80,000 in the | :04:31. | :04:33.
North. Engineers are working to restore supplies. We have had a | :04:34. | :04:45.
thousand engineers and support staff across the area identifying the | :04:46. | :04:48.
faults and getting resources to the customers get their supplies back | :04:49. | :04:52.
on. Everywhere you look there is damage. You can see the real power | :04:53. | :04:59.
of the storm as it swept across Scotland. Forecasters say there is | :05:00. | :05:04.
more to come. Blizzards and flooding are to follow. Our correspondent is | :05:05. | :05:16.
there, what is the situation? It is an improving picture on the coast. | :05:17. | :05:23.
If you look out to sea, you can see the swell is getting back to normal. | :05:24. | :05:29.
After a day of disruption on the roads and rail, the focus is on | :05:30. | :05:37.
fears of flooding in the East of Scotland, and there is the warning | :05:38. | :05:41.
out for blizzards and snow in the north of Scotland. Thousands of | :05:42. | :05:47.
people are still without power. One person has already died in Scotland | :05:48. | :05:52.
and several others have been injured. The First Minister Alex | :05:53. | :05:59.
Salmond has praised the efforts of firefighters. They have already been | :06:00. | :06:02.
stretched responding to the helicopter crash in Glasgow. With | :06:03. | :06:08.
the fears of flooding and snow, there could be more to come. The | :06:09. | :06:15.
storm is moving further south. Thousands of people along England's | :06:16. | :06:18.
East coast are being told to leave their homes at the earliest | :06:19. | :06:21.
opportunity amid fears of the most serious tidal surge for 30 years. | :06:22. | :06:23.
The Environment Agency expects 3,000 properties to be flooded within the | :06:24. | :06:27.
next 24 hours. Our correspondent Ed Thomas reports from Redcar in | :06:28. | :06:37.
Cleveland. Sophie, we have had 60 mph winds, gales have whipped the | :06:38. | :06:45.
East Coast, but the attention is turning to the sea and what the | :06:46. | :06:48.
tidal surge will mean for the thousands of people, businesses and | :06:49. | :06:55.
homes along the East Coast. Get ready and hold on. In Redcar, 70 mph | :06:56. | :07:03.
winds battered the coast. Here, gale force winds closed the roads. A | :07:04. | :07:12.
struggle just to get to work. 70 and 80 mph winds have made the commute | :07:13. | :07:17.
unbearable for some. He just lost his balance. I tried to catch but it | :07:18. | :07:24.
was too. The Humber Bridge has been closed. This was the bridge in | :07:25. | :07:30.
Newcastle, another victim of the gales. On the railways, | :07:31. | :07:35.
cancellations and delays as services were reduced across the North of | :07:36. | :07:39.
England. Some are now predicting the worst tidal surge for 30 years with | :07:40. | :07:46.
East Anglia in the path. 3000 homes are at risk of coastal flooding and | :07:47. | :07:49.
forecasters say there could be damage. Later today we will see | :07:50. | :07:57.
something unusual. Low pressure will coincide with strong winds on its | :07:58. | :08:01.
back edge. That will combine with a storm surge on the North Sea and | :08:02. | :08:06.
produce a significant risk of damaging flooding around coastal | :08:07. | :08:10.
areas later today and overnight. This is what nobody wants to see | :08:11. | :08:14.
again. The storm of 1953 that battered the East Coast. 320 lives | :08:15. | :08:23.
were lost as BC reclaimed the land. 60 years on and no chances are being | :08:24. | :08:29.
taken. -- the sea reclaimed the land. I urge everybody watching this | :08:30. | :08:37.
to take notice of the environment agency announcements and | :08:38. | :08:45.
announcements from local government. Evacuations have commenced in | :08:46. | :08:49.
Norfolk and I would ask everybody to work closely and cooperate with | :08:50. | :08:52.
local authorities. This storm is leading pain and destruction in its | :08:53. | :08:57.
path. Thousands have been left without power in Northern Ireland, | :08:58. | :09:01.
and we are told the worst is yet to come. Yes, and the focus is now on | :09:02. | :09:08.
the East Coast. Places like Norfolk. Homes are being evacuated | :09:09. | :09:16.
in Essex and it is clear that it is going to be an extremely difficult | :09:17. | :09:26.
24 hours. We will bring you the latest from where that evacuation is | :09:27. | :09:34.
happening. And to keep up to date with the latest in your area - don't | :09:35. | :09:38.
forget you can tune into your local BBC Radio station on FM, digital | :09:39. | :09:43.
radio, and online. The Chancellor has promised a "recovery for all" as | :09:44. | :09:46.
he delivered his annual Autumn Statement. George Osborne said the | :09:47. | :09:50.
UK is growing faster than any other major economy thanks to his | :09:51. | :09:52.
policies, but the job of recovery is "not yet done". Borrowing is down | :09:53. | :09:59.
"significantly more than forecast" he said with the country set to be | :10:00. | :10:03.
back in the black by 2018/19. The Chancellor also announced that | :10:04. | :10:06.
growth forecasts for this year had more than doubled from 0.6% to 1.4%. | :10:07. | :10:09.
But he warned that younger generations will have to work | :10:10. | :10:11.
longer, as he confirmed that the state pension age would rise to 68 | :10:12. | :10:15.
in the mid 2030s. Here's our political correspondent Chris Mason. | :10:16. | :10:26.
It might feel very much like winter but it still looks like autumn at | :10:27. | :10:30.
Westminster. The Treasury has been assembling this mini budget for | :10:31. | :10:33.
months. Today is an announcement time. Is there any Christmas cheer? | :10:34. | :10:43.
Few expected a Santa like giveaway from George Osborne and Danny | :10:44. | :10:47.
Alexander. Instead, a focus on where the economy is heading, having | :10:48. | :10:51.
driven through the gloom and back into growth. Mr Speaker, Britain's | :10:52. | :11:07.
economic plan is working. The job is not done. We need to secure the | :11:08. | :11:15.
economy for the long-term. The biggest risk to that comes from | :11:16. | :11:21.
those who would abandon the plan. The state pension will go up by ?2 | :11:22. | :11:27.
95 a week from next April, that the pension age for younger people will | :11:28. | :11:31.
rise in the long-term. We think a fair principle is that people should | :11:32. | :11:36.
expect to spend a third of their adult life in retirement, based on | :11:37. | :11:44.
the latest life expectancy figures. The state pension age will be 60 | :11:45. | :11:53.
eight -- 68. There is money to ensure all infants in England can | :11:54. | :11:57.
have a school dinner. This autumn Statement has found the resources to | :11:58. | :12:03.
fund the expansion of free school meals for all school children in | :12:04. | :12:11.
reception, year one, and year two. Every new spending plan will be paid | :12:12. | :12:15.
for by a cut somewhere else. There will be ?3 billion of cuts over the | :12:16. | :12:20.
next three years. There will be a cap on business rates in England and | :12:21. | :12:27.
Wales, 2% from April. The fuel duty rise has been cancelled and the car | :12:28. | :12:31.
tax disc system has been cancelled as well. George Osborne was able to | :12:32. | :12:37.
sound optimistic. Yes, there is a long way to go but his strategy has | :12:38. | :12:48.
been big dated -- vindicated. Labour have launched this poster to greet | :12:49. | :12:56.
George Osborne's speech. There is a cost of living crisis even if they | :12:57. | :13:01.
will not admit it in this House. After reading it in years of | :13:02. | :13:04.
flat-lining, the slowest recovery for over 100 years. This is from a | :13:05. | :13:15.
Chancellor and the Prime Minister who said they were in it together | :13:16. | :13:23.
and then gave a huge tax cuts to millionaires! The Chancellor will | :13:24. | :13:27.
wait to see what people make of it. Others will analyse the small print. | :13:28. | :13:33.
The Chancellor confirmed that he is bringing forward increases in the | :13:34. | :13:36.
state pension age. People now in their 40s will have to wait until | :13:37. | :13:39.
they are 68 to be eligible for a pension. Dan Johnson has been | :13:40. | :13:42.
getting reaction in Cockermouth in Cumbria. The days of a state pension | :13:43. | :13:53.
at 65 are no more. Each generation lives longer and most people will | :13:54. | :13:58.
need to work longer as well. Most people in their 40s will not get | :13:59. | :14:02.
their pension until they are 68. Most people who are leaving school | :14:03. | :14:05.
now will have to wait until they are 70. This will just provide a longer | :14:06. | :14:14.
term framework for the pension system to reflect better what is | :14:15. | :14:17.
happening with life expectancy which is really an overdue change that the | :14:18. | :14:22.
government is getting round to making. While experts say change is | :14:23. | :14:33.
inevitable, shops in this town are less convinced. Me and my husband | :14:34. | :14:37.
have a running joke. Other time we get there there will not be a | :14:38. | :14:46.
pension! The state pension age is already due to increased to 66 for | :14:47. | :14:51.
men and women by 2020, and it will rise to 67 x 2028, ringing forward | :14:52. | :14:58.
these further increases is an attempt to keep it in line with an | :14:59. | :15:03.
ever-growing life expectancy. The government said people should spend | :15:04. | :15:08.
on average no more than a third of their adult life in retirement. | :15:09. | :15:12.
These increases make sure we have a decent pension to deal with it. | :15:13. | :15:18.
Let's get more from our Chief Economics Correspondent, Hugh Pym. | :15:19. | :15:20.
Very different to budget eight months ago. Yes, Sophie, | :15:21. | :15:27.
significantly better. I'm sure George Osborne was looking forward | :15:28. | :15:30.
to today after the economy improved a lot over the summer. Back in | :15:31. | :15:35.
March, we talked about a triple dip recession but that never happened. | :15:36. | :15:39.
The double dip didn't happen after we looks back at the figures, so | :15:40. | :15:42.
let's look at what we learn today about the growth outlook. In March, | :15:43. | :15:46.
at the time of the budget, the forecast for growth this year was | :15:47. | :15:54.
0.6%. That has now been revised. The biggest upwards revision of forecast | :15:55. | :16:00.
like this in 40 years, 1.4%. That's in line with independent forecasts. | :16:01. | :16:03.
Higher growth means tax revenues coming in, so rowing falls. The | :16:04. | :16:09.
forecast demand for this year was borrowing of ?120 billion. That is | :16:10. | :16:14.
now going to be revised downwards, so they expect the out term for | :16:15. | :16:21.
borrowing will be more like ?111 billion this year. Over the next | :16:22. | :16:25.
four years, ?70 billion less than they expected in March. By 2018 - | :16:26. | :16:31.
19, it seems a long way away, but that's the direction of these | :16:32. | :16:34.
forecasts, the Chancellor will be balancing the books, the -- but that | :16:35. | :16:42.
doesn't mean you have cleared the debt and is a big challenge ahead on | :16:43. | :16:47.
that. Thank you very much. Norman Smith is at Westminster for us now. | :16:48. | :16:53.
Mixed messages today. The economy is increasing, but for the younger | :16:54. | :16:57.
generation, they will have to work longer for a pension. Almost unique | :16:58. | :17:02.
statement because those of us who have covered a number of these tend | :17:03. | :17:07.
to wait for the Chancellor to produce a last-minute magic puff of | :17:08. | :17:12.
smoke and a great headline wrapping giveaway announcement. This year, | :17:13. | :17:16.
there was none. It tells us two truths, I think. One, there really | :17:17. | :17:22.
is no money around that, two, such a ploy would have jarred with the | :17:23. | :17:25.
Chancellor's core message this year. We have come a long way but there's | :17:26. | :17:29.
a long way to go, and that, despite the fact we have growth up, | :17:30. | :17:35.
employment up, but the prospect of a surplus in the next Parliament, Mr | :17:36. | :17:39.
Osborne said growth was no longer enough. He was going to turn around | :17:40. | :17:43.
the economy and plan a had to continue. We learned that there were | :17:44. | :17:50.
to be further curbs on benefits for youngsters not in training and | :17:51. | :17:54.
education. Capping welfare. Not a little bit more as territory. We are | :17:55. | :18:01.
really talking about a long haul still to come -- austerity. Mr | :18:02. | :18:05.
Osborne said we wouldn't have paid off the deficit until 2018 - 19. | :18:06. | :18:10.
That means we're only halfway to implementing plan A. Norman Smith, | :18:11. | :18:19.
in Westminster, thank you very much. There's much more on the Autumn | :18:20. | :18:21.
Statement on our website. Including analysis from our Business Editor, | :18:22. | :18:30.
Robert Peston. Our top story this lunchtime. A powerful storm batters | :18:31. | :18:33.
large parts of the UK as the Environment Agency warns thousands | :18:34. | :18:36.
of people to prepare for the worst tidal surge in 60 years. England | :18:37. | :18:41.
fight back on day one of the second Ashes Test in Adelaide. On BBC | :18:42. | :18:50.
London, the Princess Royal opens the Greenwich Equestrian Centre | :18:51. | :18:56.
celebrating the Olympic legacy. And restoration work starts on Battersea | :18:57. | :18:57.
Power Station. The celebrity chef, Nigella Lawson | :18:58. | :19:11.
has been accused of using her court appearances as a vehicle to explain | :19:12. | :19:14.
herself to the world's media. Today she told the court she was not proud | :19:15. | :19:17.
of taking drugs, but would rather be honest and ashamed than bullied with | :19:18. | :19:22.
lies. Nigella Lawson has been giving evidence for a second day at the | :19:23. | :19:25.
trial of her two former personal assistants. They both deny fraud. | :19:26. | :19:29.
Sangita Myska reports from Isleworth Crown Court. To shouts of her name, | :19:30. | :19:41.
Nigella Lawson arrived for a second day of probing questions about her | :19:42. | :19:44.
personal life and allegations that she was a drug addict. She said in | :19:45. | :19:49.
court she felt the world media had put her on trial. In fact, Ms Lawson | :19:50. | :19:55.
as a witness in preceding it -- proceedings against her personal | :19:56. | :19:59.
assistance, Elisabetta Grillo and Francesca Grillo. They are accused | :20:00. | :20:02.
of dishonesty spending over half ?1 million on a company credit card. | :20:03. | :20:07.
The former PAs claim the spending was authorised as long as they did | :20:08. | :20:12.
not disclose Ms Lawson's and drug addiction. Addressing those claims, | :20:13. | :20:18.
Ms Lawson Sergei was not an habitual user and only used cocaine on two | :20:19. | :20:19.
occasions. Defence counsel then claimed Ms | :20:20. | :20:29.
Lawson was giving evidence at a damage limitation exercise. She said | :20:30. | :20:31.
in response: although it's incredibly simple to | :20:32. | :20:44.
make... Nigella Lawson has netted millions from her television cookery | :20:45. | :20:49.
programmes. When she married Charles Saatchi, a multi-million pound art | :20:50. | :20:51.
collector, they were often photographed in public. Then, in the | :20:52. | :20:55.
summer, paparazzi photos were published showing Mr Saatchi with | :20:56. | :21:02.
his hand around Ms Lawson's vote. The couple went through a bitter | :21:03. | :22:40.
divorce shortly after. Those who were both acquitted of the murder, | :22:41. | :22:46.
but not yet, pending appeals. They will sense sentencing tomorrow and | :22:47. | :22:54.
the military court. The Work and Pensions Secretary has admitted that | :22:55. | :22:57.
the government's flagship and events programme may not be completed on. | :22:58. | :23:03.
Iain Duncan Smith had hoped to implement the universal screen in | :23:04. | :23:08.
2017. He says that transferring some people onto the new benefit may take | :23:09. | :23:13.
some time. Our political correspondent reports. It is the | :23:14. | :23:18.
government scheme to merge six benefits into one and try to make | :23:19. | :23:22.
sure it pays to work, and its creator, Iain Duncan Smith, has long | :23:23. | :23:27.
insisted that the drop will be done to a deadline. The plan has always | :23:28. | :23:32.
been to deliver this in a four-year schedule to 2017. That plan has | :23:33. | :23:39.
changed. We may take a little longer on those who are already in the | :23:40. | :23:45.
system and have no work requirement on them. They are a voluble group. | :23:46. | :23:55.
The BBC have been told that 700,000 claimants could be transferred after | :23:56. | :23:59.
2017, perhaps a 10th of the number who claim universal credit. Iain | :24:00. | :24:07.
Duncan Smith says the big picture it has not changed. Universal credit | :24:08. | :24:15.
will be the benefit by 2016 and the remains of the majority of the stock | :24:16. | :24:20.
will be there by 2017. This programme is dogged by concerns over | :24:21. | :24:25.
its computers and the way it is managed, and was an obvious target | :24:26. | :24:31.
for Labour. No mention of the universal credit in the statement! | :24:32. | :24:35.
Iain Duncan Smith is in the shambles! He saw the funny side, | :24:36. | :24:44.
just. Don't expect them to see item I over how much this will cost or | :24:45. | :24:50.
how long it takes. A court has heard that the Sun's former editor Rebekah | :24:51. | :24:54.
Brooks agreed to pay a member of the armed forces ?4,000 for a picture of | :24:55. | :24:57.
Prince William in a bikini. The jury at the trial of Rebekah Brooks at | :24:58. | :25:01.
the Old Bailey was told that she sanctioned the payment for the | :25:02. | :25:04.
photograph, which was taken at a party at Sandhurst, but the image | :25:05. | :25:11.
was never published. England have fought back in Adelaide, after an | :25:12. | :25:14.
ominous start to the second Ashes Test in Australia. The first day | :25:15. | :25:17.
finished with the hosts on 273-5. It could actually have been a lot | :25:18. | :25:20.
better for Alastair Cook's men, who dropped three catches in the final | :25:21. | :25:23.
session. Joe Wilson reports from Adelaide. | :25:24. | :25:28.
Nobody can walk on water in Adelaide, not even Don Bradman | :25:29. | :25:31.
managed it so fortunately the new footbridge opened just in time for | :25:32. | :25:35.
the test. A reconstruction very much the theme here. Cricket Australia's | :25:36. | :25:41.
twitter feed greeted Monty Panesar's return to the team like | :25:42. | :25:45.
this. Choice of tone and image which left to official policy. That | :25:46. | :25:52.
policy. David Warner hit boundaries until he found Michael Carberry -- | :25:53. | :26:01.
apology. 121 runs. Everyone predicted batting would be | :26:02. | :26:05.
straightforward. And so it was, or so it seemed. James Anderson is | :26:06. | :26:07.
blessed with extraordinary reactions. Watson gone in a flash. | :26:08. | :26:15.
England brought in and Stokes and played two spin bowlers. 155-3. And | :26:16. | :26:22.
now the real Monty Panesar stood up. That innocent joy back. Steve Smith, | :26:23. | :26:33.
the wicket. He still not a feeder -- fielder in the Anderson class. | :26:34. | :26:36.
Michael Clarke could've departed early, as well. Joe Root, the | :26:37. | :26:41.
fielder. Bailey was passed 50. Better late than never. The final | :26:42. | :26:46.
image of the day, hard to watch for England. Michael Carberry, one of | :26:47. | :26:53.
England's's Westfield is. 273-5 at the close. On the second day, | :26:54. | :26:58.
Australia will reach 400 and aspire for that. You know what they say | :26:59. | :27:09.
about catches winning matches. Thousands of people are being told | :27:10. | :27:13.
to prepare to leave their homes on England's's east coast after | :27:14. | :27:15.
warnings the biggest tidal surge could hit tonight. Ben is in great | :27:16. | :27:20.
Yarmouth for us. Tell us the situation. Here in great Yarmouth, | :27:21. | :27:28.
the river beside me over the quayside wall, it could surge around | :27:29. | :27:32.
10:30pm tonight, so people are already using these sandbags. Five | :27:33. | :27:39.
of them around town. Filling up sandbags, provided by the council in | :27:40. | :27:46.
readiness for that. This area, just south of great Yarmouth, is | :27:47. | :27:51.
identified as being at risk. People are being urged to stay with | :27:52. | :27:53.
relatives, stay with friends if they can tonight. And possibly for the | :27:54. | :27:59.
next 36 hours. And for those who have nowhere to go to, emergency | :28:00. | :28:03.
evacuation centres are being set up at local schools and other centres, | :28:04. | :28:08.
as well. People here getting ready for the worst for the Bay have seen | :28:09. | :28:11.
what happened elsewhere and they know it is coming their way. Thank | :28:12. | :28:17.
you very much indeed. Humberside Police declared a incident and say | :28:18. | :28:21.
North East Lincolnshire should prepare for flooding from 5pm this | :28:22. | :28:27.
afternoon. Our correspondent Judith Moritz is in Saltney in North Wales. | :28:28. | :28:33.
The situation is also quite bad. Yes, extremely high wind here. This | :28:34. | :28:39.
is the River Dee, which is unusually high. It hasn't topped its banks. We | :28:40. | :28:45.
are just into North Flintshire. Early on we were in Chester, which | :28:46. | :28:52.
is OK, but there are flood warnings across this stretch. People have | :28:53. | :28:56.
been checking the river levels. We thought it had reached the high | :28:57. | :28:59.
water mark about half an hour ago, but it does look over to us, as | :29:00. | :29:04.
though it is still rising. I have spoken to a headteacher locally, who | :29:05. | :29:08.
says that her school remains open budgies talking to a network of | :29:09. | :29:12.
other headteachers in the area to make sure it is appropriate and | :29:13. | :29:15.
children can get home from school safely. And, as for householders | :29:16. | :29:21.
here, they say they did have fair warning overnight but of course | :29:22. | :29:26.
warnings can overcome early enough. A lot of anxious people here making | :29:27. | :29:29.
sure the river contains itself within the banks. Elsewhere in the | :29:30. | :29:36.
North West, the Trafford Centre has closed for the M6 is our problems at | :29:37. | :29:44.
Blackpool prom. A few examples. The Northwest experiencing high wind all | :29:45. | :29:47.
over the place but here in North Wales, I can't give you an exact | :29:48. | :29:51.
measure, but it feels to me, very windy. It's been like this for the | :29:52. | :29:56.
last few hours, and you can see the water behind me racing along the | :29:57. | :29:59.
River Dee. For now, it's OK but I think it's fair to say there are | :30:00. | :30:03.
people who are still feeling anxious about what may happen here. Judith, | :30:04. | :30:10.
thanks very much. You can keep up to date on the BBC News Channel. Right | :30:11. | :30:14.
now, let's have a look at the weather. | :30:15. | :30:18.
The warning from the Met office is very much in force for the rest of | :30:19. | :30:24.
the afternoon. The amber warning. Severe gales will continue but the | :30:25. | :30:29.
very worst of the gusts have passed Scotland now and this is the warning | :30:30. | :30:35.
zone. Within this zone, impacts expected in the afternoon either | :30:36. | :30:38.
from the falling trees, the disruption to transport, and to give | :30:39. | :30:42.
you the idea of the guests we have seen, low-level towns, around 93 | :30:43. | :30:50.
mph. Edinburgh itself, 82 mph, and in Glasgow, the station had to be | :30:51. | :30:53.
temporarily evacuated because of glass shattering. The weather, as I | :30:54. | :30:58.
say, slowly improving across Scotland in terms of the wind but | :30:59. | :31:01.
still some snow showers to come. Blizzard is not just across the | :31:02. | :31:09.
hills. 70 mph gusts. That, game, means structural damage in a number | :31:10. | :31:12.
of areas. More disruption and, unfortunately, travel misery in the | :31:13. | :31:18.
rush hour. Across the South, a bit of a breeze but that's not the end | :31:19. | :31:23.
of it for the there will be increasing wind across the South but | :31:24. | :31:26.
nowhere near as bad as the North. Look at the wind direction, which is | :31:27. | :31:30.
crucial in the next 24 hours. It almost flowing parallel to the | :31:31. | :31:34.
coastline and then we have the storms surging so what exactly is | :31:35. | :31:39.
that? An area of low pressure across the North Sea which means the water | :31:40. | :31:43.
rises and we also have the gales pushing in. It's funnelling in and | :31:44. | :31:50.
we have the waves, which could mean three metres in some places of extra | :31:51. | :31:54.
water toppling over the sea defences, so it's mostly East Anglia | :31:55. | :31:58.
the Environment Agency is worried about. There are severe flood | :31:59. | :32:02.
warnings out which means danger to life and property is imminent. The | :32:03. | :32:06.
weather for tonight, frosty conditions across Scotland and | :32:07. | :32:10.
eastern parts of the UK for the not quite so chilly. Tomorrow, | :32:11. | :32:16.
unfortunately, still bits and pieces after the storm in the north, | :32:17. | :32:20.
flooding possibly, of course, across the south-east, and East Anglia. | :32:21. | :32:24.
Then we will see a bit of rain, sleet and snow heading towards | :32:25. | :32:29.
north-western Britain. The Arctic a settling in across Scotland with | :32:30. | :32:33.
temperatures hovering at zero. As far as the weekend goes, the weather | :32:34. | :32:38.
settles down. High pressure here. It does look as though rain and wind | :32:39. | :32:41.
will sweep into parts of Scotland so, the moment, gale force winds we | :32:42. | :32:46.
are closely watching here at the weather centre. | :32:47. | :32:49.
Thank you very much. Now a reminder of our top story. A powerful storm | :32:50. | :32:52.
batters large parts of the UK as the Environment Agency warns thousands | :32:53. | :33:00.
of people to prepare for the worst tidal surge in 60 years. That's all | :33:01. | :33:01. |
