Good evening. This is BBC Newsline with Noel Thomspon and Donna | :00:14. | :00:20.
Traynor. The headlines this Tuesday evening: | :00:20. | :00:25.

Two new faces, one will hand back in the northern Ireland squad. | :00:50. | :00:54.
And if you enjoyed sizzling in the sunshine today, why ice-cream will | :00:54. | :01:00.

The police say dozens of people could have been killed or injured | :01:03. | :01:08.
by rioters to try to use a burning car to attack officers in Ardoyne. | :01:08. | :01:13.
Helicopter video pictures released show the car careering out of | :01:13. | :01:16.
control through a large crowd before smashing into the wall of a | :01:16. | :01:21.
house. The police will use the video to help identify Republican | :01:21. | :01:24.
troublemakers, but they have rejected Sinn Fein claims they are | :01:24. | :01:30.
taking a softly-softly approach in pursuing Lillis writers -- rioters. | :01:30. | :01:35.
The moment rioters in the Ardoyne area had to run a car into at a | :01:35. | :01:39.
rolling far ball. They tried to push it towards police lines. Some | :01:39. | :01:44.
of those involved were children. But it quickly rolled out of | :01:44. | :01:49.
control and crashed into the wall up a house. Undeterred, the rioters | :01:49. | :01:54.
tried again. The police appealed for public help in catching those | :01:54. | :02:01.
responsible and issued this morning. It could have exploded, there are | :02:01. | :02:07.
at least 100 people. Decca could have gone up, the petrol tank | :02:07. | :02:10.
exploded, anyone nearby could have been injured or killed by the | :02:10. | :02:15.
recklessness of the people involved. 22 people have now been arrested | :02:15. | :02:25.
and 17 charge. -- charged. 21 people have been arrested and 16 of | :02:25. | :02:29.
them charged in connection with rioting orchestrated by the UVF in | :02:29. | :02:33.
East Belfast last month. But there has not been a single arrest | :02:33. | :02:40.
following serious rioting in Bali Clare, Newtownabbey and | :02:40. | :02:43.
Carrickfergus on July 9th in which six police officers were injured. | :02:43. | :02:47.
Loyalists blame the police for provoking the violence by removing | :02:47. | :02:54.
flags, including the Union flag in Bali Clare. The police rejected | :02:54. | :03:00.
acclaim. But the apologised for the way Mr fights were removed. They | :03:00. | :03:04.
have been accused of double standards. The evidence shows that | :03:04. | :03:10.
the PSNI are being proactive in arresting people and I am not | :03:10. | :03:18.
arguing against people who are doing that, but they are taking an | :03:18. | :03:22.
hands-off approach when it comes to the loyalist areas. | :03:22. | :03:27.
investigation into the disturbances in East Belfast, they have already | :03:27. | :03:31.
been 20 arrests, which is a similar level to the arrests I have carried | :03:31. | :03:36.
out. Jimmy, it shows that there is an equal handed approach been taken. | :03:36. | :03:41.
-- to me. The police may police photographs of individuals involved | :03:41. | :03:44.
in writing in Ardoyne and East Belfast and ask the public to help | :03:44. | :03:51.
identify them. They cannot be identified by other means. | :03:51. | :03:55.
Five men have been arrested in a major security operation in | :03:55. | :03:58.
connection with the murder of Constable Ronan Kerr in April. | :03:58. | :04:04.
Police officers have been involved in searches in Toome, Bellaghy, | :04:04. | :04:09.
Ballyronan and Coalisland. Louise Cullen is in Coalisland. | :04:09. | :04:14.
These arrests are part of an operation which began early this | :04:14. | :04:17.
morning and the search is still continuing. Seven searches in four | :04:17. | :04:24.
areas across the counties following the five arrests. The police say | :04:24. | :04:27.
evidence in the investigation is progressing. Around 200 officers | :04:27. | :04:31.
are involved in this major search operation, stretching across three | :04:31. | :04:39.
counties. In Toome, two men were arrested aged 27 and 46. At least | :04:39. | :04:43.
three sedges are being carried out in Toome amid heavy police presence. | :04:43. | :04:48.
One at a business on Hill Head Road, and another at houses in the town. | :04:48. | :04:53.
In County Tyrone, forensic officers also remove items from a house in | :04:53. | :04:57.
Coalisland, as well as a car. A 22- year-old man was arrested here. | :04:57. | :05:01.
House was also searched in Ballyronan after 33-year-old man | :05:01. | :05:07.
was arrested. In County Londonderry, in a lucky, another man was held. | :05:07. | :05:13.
All five have been taking to Antrim police station. -- in Bellaghy. | :05:13. | :05:18.
Ronan Kerr died when a bomb exploded under his car in April. | :05:18. | :05:22.
Today's operations brings to 40 the number of searches in relation to | :05:22. | :05:25.
this investigation. Four people have been arrested and one man | :05:25. | :05:30.
charged. For possession guns, exposes and incendiaries. The | :05:30. | :05:34.
police say today's activities are the latest stage in the ongoing | :05:35. | :05:38.
murder investigation. They offend the public for their support and | :05:39. | :05:48.
assistance -- they thank the public. In the matter of Ronan Kerr, a | :05:48. | :05:52.
50,000 reward was offered for information leading to the rest at | :05:52. | :05:55.
or condition of those involved in the killing. The police said today | :05:55. | :06:02.
that rewards still stand. The family of a County Armagh | :06:02. | :06:05.
soldier have been hearing details of how he was killed by a rogue | :06:05. | :06:10.
Afghan soldier. That in an Neal Turkington was killed alongside two | :06:10. | :06:18.
colleagues in Helmand last year. -- lieutenant Neal Turkington. | :06:18. | :06:21.
Lieutenant Neal Turkington's father was a man those at the inquest | :06:21. | :06:30.
today along with the parents of Major James Bowman. They were | :06:30. | :06:34.
serving with the first Battalion Royal Gurkha Rifles, soldiers known | :06:34. | :06:37.
for their toughness and loyalty. Like these British troops in | :06:37. | :06:41.
Helmand, they had been patrolling and fighting alongside soldiers of | :06:41. | :06:44.
the Afghan National Army when they were betrayed and murdered by a man | :06:44. | :06:50.
they thought was an ally. The dead men were operating from a compound | :06:50. | :06:55.
near Lashkar Gah. In the small hours of the morning, a rogue | :06:55. | :07:00.
Afghan soldier shot major Bowman, wounded several others, then fired | :07:00. | :07:07.
a rocket-propelled grenade into the operations centre. The man then | :07:07. | :07:11.
fled in the darkness and confusion. James Bowman was 34 and had been in | :07:12. | :07:16.
Afghanistan for three months. Neil care - I Neal Turkington was 26 and | :07:16. | :07:21.
he was admired for his professionalism. He had also taught | :07:21. | :07:26.
himself to speak the local language in an Irish accent. The other | :07:26. | :07:31.
soldier had been in Afghanistan barely one month. The inquest heard | :07:31. | :07:36.
from their commanding officer, who acknowledged there was a risk in | :07:36. | :07:40.
partnering so closely with the Afghan national army, but to treat | :07:40. | :07:46.
them as a potentially hostile would have caused resentment. He was that | :07:46. | :07:50.

the Tessem 2009 of five British soldiers, gunned down by an Afghan | :07:54. | :08:00.
policeman. The police and the army were very different organisations, | :08:00. | :08:03.
he said. The Afghan army was much more professional and accountable | :08:03. | :08:09.
than the police. The men's assailant is still a wanted man, | :08:09. | :08:13.
and who has since claimed to have joined the Taliban. | :08:13. | :08:17.

A brother of Gerry Adams has begun a legal challenge in the Republic | :08:37. | :08:41.
against extradition to Northern Ireland. Liam Adams is facing | :08:41. | :08:47.
charges of sexually abusing his daughter. Jennifer O'Leary was in | :08:47. | :08:53.
court. What is the basis of Mr Adams a' case against extradition? | :08:53. | :08:58.
Domain crux of his argument is, if he is extradited, he would not get | :08:58. | :09:02.
a fair trial because of the media coverage he has been subjected to, | :09:02. | :09:07.
and that unfairness has come punt - - is compounded by changes to the | :09:07. | :09:17.
:09:17. | :09:18. | ||
jury selection in Northern Ireland. There is specific reference made to | :09:18. | :09:21.
a television documentary? That is right, a documentary that | :09:21. | :09:27.
was broadcast in December 2009, it was around the time that Liam Adams | :09:27. | :09:32.
had not turned up to a preliminary hearing him a Belfast court about | :09:32. | :09:36.
the abuse allegations. The programme was broadcast, but his | :09:36. | :09:42.
brother Gerry Adams was interviewed for the programme Antti stated, I | :09:42. | :09:51.
believe. The M Adams's councillor said, people in the jury have high | :09:51. | :09:56.
regard for Gerry Adams butter are likely to forget his own brother | :09:56. | :10:02.
has announced he is guilty. They may think, what hope is there for | :10:02. | :10:05.
impartiality? How long do we think this will | :10:05. | :10:09.
last? In December 2009, Gerry Adams also | :10:09. | :10:14.
released a statement which included, since the first day I spoke to her | :10:14. | :10:22.
about the abuse, I believe her, she must get justice. The councillor | :10:22. | :10:28.
for a Liam Adams spoke today. He said, let us be realistic, Gerry | :10:28. | :10:31.
Adams has an excellent understanding of the media. He | :10:31. | :10:38.
knows the law and he must have no he was driving a coach to the | :10:38. | :10:42.
principle of a fair trial. He surmised that he was perhaps, there | :10:42. | :10:46.
was perhaps the competing interests. The extradition hearing will | :10:46. | :10:51.
continue on Thursday. The recession the officially be | :10:51. | :10:56.
over, but the UK economy is still fragile. According to new figures, | :10:56. | :11:02.
the growth was just 0.2% between April and June. Jim Fitzpatrick has | :11:02. | :11:07.
been looking at what has been happening locally. Those figures, | :11:07. | :11:12.
GDP, remind us what GDP is all about. | :11:12. | :11:17.
GDP is the magic economic figure, it reduces everything to one | :11:17. | :11:21.
statistic, and the GDP is above zero them it means we are growing. | :11:21. | :11:27.
It covers everything from haircuts to highway construction. 0.2%, a UK | :11:27. | :11:32.
economy is growing but only just. Still lagging behind Germany and | :11:32. | :11:36.
the US. Northern Ireland is lagging behind the UK. We do not have | :11:36. | :11:41.
regional GDP figures, but we do have other figures. Unethical -- | :11:41. | :11:46.
unofficial figures suggest Northern Ireland's economy will only grow by | :11:46. | :11:52.
0.5% this year. Compared to a UK average expected of 1 by 3%. | :11:52. | :11:56.
Why is our economy because? Northern Ireland is connected to | :11:56. | :12:00.
the Republic's economy and we know things have not been good there. | :12:00. | :12:04.
And they are highly reliant on the public sector, we have seen changes | :12:04. | :12:08.
there as well. We have had a property crash, fewer consumers | :12:08. | :12:13.
coming and spending their money from the South, and a relation to | :12:13. | :12:18.
the public sector, that is stagnant and falling. -- our reliance on the | :12:18. | :12:22.
public sector. People have less money to spend so less people are | :12:22. | :12:27.
shopping from the South, and people in the North have less money. It is | :12:27. | :12:31.
a tale of two sectors, on the one hand we have the service sector | :12:31. | :12:35.
which is doing badly because there is little money, then they have a | :12:35. | :12:39.
manufacturing sector which is doing quite well because people here are | :12:39. | :12:43.
not shopping, but people elsewhere are buying some of our goods. | :12:43. | :12:47.
Talking about companies like Almac, pages there that we can see, that | :12:47. | :12:51.
company is doing rather well. Let us break that down. | :12:51. | :12:54.
Let us go through those local figures. | :12:54. | :12:58.
Manufacturing to start with. It has seen growth over three-quarters in | :12:58. | :13:05.
a row. 7.5% in the year compared to the UK average of 2.7%. That is | :13:05. | :13:09.
partly due to a boom in food prices but we are also seen decent | :13:09. | :13:12.
recovery in our engineering companies, like Bombardier and | :13:12. | :13:17.
Wrightbus. The service sector that -- sector is a different picture, | :13:17. | :13:24.
it has been down the four quarters in a row. It has shrunk 5.5% over | :13:24. | :13:30.
the year compared to the UK, one point for%. What these figures tell | :13:30. | :13:34.
us is that people talk about the balance in the Northern Ireland | :13:34. | :13:38.
economy, that sums it up. We need to rebalance away from those | :13:38. | :13:41.
sectors which are falling back, less reliant on the public sector | :13:41. | :13:45.
and try to get some more of those companies that can go and can give | :13:45. | :13:55.
:13:55. | :14:00. | ||
A 14 people were killed during the most recent 12 month period. The | :14:00. | :14:06.
latest statistics have emerged after a man became critically ill | :14:06. | :14:13.
after an injury at the JTI cigarette plant. | :14:13. | :14:18.
This is one of Northern Ireland's biggest employers, owned by and | :14:18. | :14:23.
Japanese company. The accident happened during maintenance work. | :14:23. | :14:29.
It was being carried out on a robotic arm. Machinery is | :14:29. | :14:34.
understood to have fallen on the workers. He was taken to a nearby | :14:34. | :14:37.
hospital and then transferred to the Ulster Hospital. | :14:38. | :14:41.
This happened after another industrial accident in which a | :14:41. | :14:48.
worker died. It was at this recycling yard where he was trapped | :14:48. | :14:52.
behind a lorry. The number of health and safety related deaths is | :14:52. | :14:58.
on the vice. Two years ago, six people died. In the past year, this | :14:58. | :15:05.
has more than doubled. Four months into the latest cycle, seven people | :15:05. | :15:12.
have died already. Even when workers survive, their injuries can | :15:12. | :15:18.
be a life-changing. Earlier this month, the factory was fined | :15:18. | :15:24.
25,000. It was found guilty of breaking health and safety what -- | :15:24. | :15:28.
health and safety laws. They were curvier suffered permanent brain | :15:28. | :15:36.
damage. The Health and Safety Executive | :15:36. | :15:46.
want to know what happened and why? We are used to be price of alcohol | :15:46. | :15:50.
going up on the Budget but across the board increases are on the | :15:50. | :15:54.
cards if the executive said same minimum price. Ministers think it | :15:54. | :15:59.
will help tackle excessive drinking and are hoping to put proposals to | :15:59. | :16:05.
the Assembly after the summer holiday. | :16:05. | :16:09.
Doctors, police and politicians say that Northern Ireland has a | :16:09. | :16:13.
drinking problem. It is costing hundreds of millions of pounds | :16:13. | :16:23.
:16:23. | :16:23. | ||
every year. The price of a drink is too low, they say. The executive | :16:23. | :16:30.
wants to raise the minimum cost of alcohol. | :16:30. | :16:33.
The Chief Medical Officer is clear that this will save lives and will | :16:33. | :16:38.
reduce the cost to the health system so on both counts, these are | :16:38. | :16:44.
things I support. How to play can you buy alcohol? I | :16:44. | :16:49.
have been to a supermarket and I managed to buy two bottles of cider | :16:49. | :16:55.
and two bottles of white wine for 10. If the executive introduced a | :16:55. | :17:01.
minimum price of 45p per unit of alcohol, this would topos may twice | :17:01. | :17:10.
as much, 20. -- this would cost me twice as much. | :17:11. | :17:15.
We understand the need to tackle alcohol abuse but we do not think | :17:15. | :17:20.
minimum pricing is the right approach. This is a cultural issue. | :17:21. | :17:25.
It is not based on the cost of alcohol and why should be | :17:25. | :17:30.
responsible majority pay the price for the actions of a few? | :17:30. | :17:34.
Our orders are for the plans and they denied they would gain at the | :17:34. | :17:37.
expense of supermarkets. Whatever level of minimum price | :17:37. | :17:42.
that is applied, the cost in the pub is so high that the prices | :17:42. | :17:51.
would be no where near. We might see less people in the pub. It is | :17:51. | :17:54.
about the moral lead -- moral responsibility to sell alcohol in a | :17:54. | :18:01.
responsible way. The debate will go on as the | :18:01. | :18:04.
executive makes its decision. A public consultation has just | :18:04. | :18:12.
finished. Northern Ireland's football manager | :18:12. | :18:17.
Nigel Worthington has announced the 23 man squad for next month's Euro | :18:17. | :18:27.

the past two internationals. His return comes as no great surprise | :18:37. | :18:44.
though after an injury. All smiles for Nigel Worthington as | :18:44. | :18:54.
:18:54. | :18:56. | ||
he announced a squat task to with keeping the Euro campaign alive. -- | :18:56. | :19:03.
a squad tasked with. David will be in the Scot but like | :19:03. | :19:10.
everyone else, he will be watched when we meet up and start training. | :19:10. | :19:15.
James Maclean has been in good form and he is called into the squad for | :19:15. | :19:18.
the first time. I have worked with James in the | :19:19. | :19:24.
Milk Cup a couple of years ago. He has matured a little. He has been | :19:24. | :19:30.
doing very well. Will he be involved in that the game? Probably | :19:30. | :19:37.
not but it does give us the chance to look closely at him in training. | :19:37. | :19:47.

Northern Ireland are hoping to go one better than the 1-1 draw last | :19:49. | :19:59.

time. We move to the Milk Cup now. | :20:05. | :20:10.
It is not often you see Stephen Carr son sitting on the bench. This | :20:10. | :20:15.
week, the Irish League starts swapped the pleasure of playing for | :20:15. | :20:20.
the pressure of management. It is nice and warm. Pass the ball | :20:20. | :20:24.
and enjoy its... This is a different experience. I | :20:24. | :20:30.
tried to pass on some knowledge to the kids. It is a good challenge, | :20:30. | :20:34.
and hopefully in the future I will have learned a lot from my | :20:34. | :20:44.
:20:44. | :20:48. | ||
experiences of the Milk Cup. There is a wealth of talent playing | :20:48. | :20:54.
in this tournament. He washed his young team lose 2-12 | :20:54. | :21:00.
Ipswich Town but they did grab a late consolation goal. It was | :21:00. | :21:06.
another English side who frustrated County Armagh as they conceded a | :21:06. | :21:12.
last-minute equaliser from Plymouth Argyle. The boys from County | :21:12. | :21:22.
:21:22. | :21:24. | ||
Fermanagh had to deal with the boys with the South American flair. But | :21:24. | :21:31.
the Mexican side grabbed a late winner. These games will stand them | :21:31. | :21:39.
in good stead for the future and that is what the Milk Cup is about. | :21:39. | :21:44.
The London Olympics now. They are one year our way tomorrow. We will | :21:44. | :21:49.
be looking at the best local hopes for gold medals next summer. | :21:49. | :21:58.
Tonight we look at the remarkable trio of drawers from Coltrane. -- | :21:58. | :22:05.
rowers from Coleraine. This man's training regime is | :22:05. | :22:09.
unconventional. He is one of the most committed athletes in the | :22:09. | :22:18.
sport. All too often, he has missed out when it really matters. | :22:18. | :22:23.
Can he is psychologically with 50 metres to go hold of this world | :22:23. | :22:29.
class field? And he slips back into fourth place. An epic loss. | :22:29. | :22:35.
He is now in his late 20s, at his peak and fully focused on London, | :22:35. | :22:42.
his third Olympic Games. It is on the horizon, and when I | :22:42. | :22:49.
think back to Beijing, it really was not that long ago. Everything | :22:49. | :22:52.
we are doing is in preparation towards that and I would give up | :22:52. | :22:57.
any number of World Cup wins and this year's World Tour | :22:57. | :23:01.
Championships just to get on to the start line at London because it | :23:01. | :23:07.
really is for us, the absolute pinnacle. Nothing else comes close. | :23:07. | :23:11.
Everything will be to make sure I am the quickest I can become | :23:11. | :23:19.
obsessed next year. That is my first thought when I wake up and | :23:19. | :23:27.
last when I go to slip. That and My beautiful fiancee! | :23:27. | :23:32.
He will be blowing kisses to his wife this time next year. He is due | :23:32. | :23:40.
to marry at the end of the summer. Another upset to set pulses racing. | :23:40. | :23:44.
Richard Chambers, a world champion as part of the British lightweight | :23:44. | :23:50.
four. His younger brother Peter got his chance after another member of | :23:50. | :24:00.
the boat was injured. I am so proud of what he has done. | :24:00. | :24:04.
To come into a boat and expect to win gold every time they race, that | :24:04. | :24:09.
is a massive expectation. He delivered a great performance and | :24:10. | :24:15.
supported us all the way down. He has shown his maturity and it has | :24:15. | :24:21.
been awesome to race with him, really it is. | :24:21. | :24:25.
It is our first time together, and the fact we won it is fantastic. | :24:25. | :24:30.
Really proud. Peter did not make the boat for the | :24:30. | :24:34.
World Championships this year but last weekend he won gold at the | :24:34. | :24:44.

World Under 20 degrees. Watch this You will be holding this a lot of | :25:27. | :25:36.
times. It looks like they were enjoying | :25:36. | :25:46.

themselves. Darren's Destiny is on at 10:35pm on BBC One. | :25:47. | :25:51.
There was not brilliant sunshine everywhere today but it was pretty | :25:51. | :26:01.
:26:01. | :26:03. | ||
It was warmer than Sunday, 23 degrees in parts of County Down. It | :26:03. | :26:08.
was not lose guys everywhere but a lot of places saw temperatures in | :26:09. | :26:18.
the 20s. The best of the sunshine this evening will continue to be in | :26:18. | :26:24.
northern and eastern areas. It is dry everywhere tonight. It is | :26:24. | :26:32.
likely to be a nice sunset. This is how it looked yesterday in Belfast. | :26:32. | :26:37.
Tomorrow we are expecting a change. Rain will move eastwards but it | :26:37. | :26:42.
will still be warm before the rain arrives. We have a frontal system | :26:42. | :26:47.
moving in from the Atlantic. Not too many wines so it is a | :26:47. | :26:55.
progression from west to east. Eventually, the weather will reach | :26:55. | :27:02.
the East coast. This is how red looked this morning. You had to be | :27:02. | :27:10.
up at 4:30am to take that. Cloudier skies will move in towards the West | :27:10. | :27:17.
from tomorrow morning. Despite that, temperatures remaining around 17 or | :27:17. | :27:26.
18 degrees. The rain will continue eastwards, but quite slowly. | :27:26. | :27:34.
Temperatures are probably going to be a few met 20 or 21 degrees here. | :27:34. | :27:38.
Quite a mild and warm night tomorrow night and some rain will | :27:38. | :27:42.
remain in the eastern parts first thing on Thursday. It will become | :27:42. | :27:47.
drier and brighter from the West and a cool breeze setting in. | :27:47. | :27:51. |
