Good evening. This is BBC Newsline with Noel Thompson. | :00:14. | :00:17.
The headlines this Monday evening - homeless charities say more people | :00:17. | :00:20.
than ever are being forced to sleep rough, leaving them vulnerable to | :00:20. | :00:29.
unprovoked attacks. You have people coming over and | :00:29. | :00:34.
kicking you when you are sleeping. They call you names. | :00:34. | :00:38.
It is wet, it is called committed Wendy, yet here tonight many people | :00:38. | :00:44.
will be looking for a doorway to sleep in. | :00:44. | :00:47.
Also on the programme tonight... We hear from Antrim snooker star | :00:47. | :00:57.
:00:57. | :00:59. | ||
A no-ball g from easyJet to a blind women who refused to let a board | :00:59. | :01:02.
with a guide dog. The army killing of a teenager 40 | :01:02. | :01:08.
years ago. Papers could be with the prosecution service in a fortnight. | :01:08. | :01:12.
We will hear from a disappointed Mark Allen after losing the biggest | :01:12. | :01:18.
game of his stricken career. -- his snooker career. | :01:19. | :01:22.
And as we have seen, it's a pretty wet evening, and another very windy | :01:22. | :01:25.
spell is on the way with snow for some, as well. | :01:25. | :01:28.
This wintry chill makes us want to rush home from work or shopping to | :01:28. | :01:33.
get into the welcoming warmth for a cup of tea. | :01:33. | :01:36.
But what if you had no home to go to, no respite from the weather | :01:36. | :01:39.
except a doorway and a damp sleeping bag? Homeless charities | :01:39. | :01:42.
say more people than ever are being forced to sleep rough, especially | :01:42. | :01:45.
in Belfast. Tonight we have the first of two reports on what it is | :01:45. | :01:49.
like to be homeless. Our reporter Will Leitch joins us live from the | :01:49. | :01:53.
rain-streaked city centre. Belfast is busy, with two shopping | :01:53. | :01:58.
weeks left until Christmas. But night time brings a different story | :01:58. | :02:02.
- the growing number of people who have nowhere to stay and have to | :02:02. | :02:06.
sleep where they can. I have been meeting one group of ordinary | :02:06. | :02:10.
people who don't even live here. They are from Richill in Armagh, | :02:10. | :02:18.
but regularly drive up to Belfast to do what they can to help. | :02:18. | :02:24.
A busy city centre. Shoppers hurried by a with purses and | :02:24. | :02:28.
wallets to NT and banks to fill. What a difference a few others can | :02:28. | :02:33.
make. By half-past 10, someone is sleeping rough in the same spot on | :02:33. | :02:37.
what of the stormiest night of the winter as though far. | :02:37. | :02:43.
Have you enough layers, there is another jumper here? Do you want | :02:43. | :02:51.
another jumper? This man has been unable to get a space in the any | :02:51. | :02:58.
hostel. He is cold, and with arthritis weakening his legs he | :02:58. | :03:06.
cannot move to a more sheltered spot. He is being helped from a | :03:06. | :03:11.
Christian group from County Armagh. They cannot do much except of a | :03:11. | :03:16.
food and clothing and just stay for a while. A one of the men in our | :03:16. | :03:20.
team met a man for a night, a homeless guy, and he spoke to him | :03:20. | :03:24.
and he said at said -- it was the first conversation he had had in | :03:24. | :03:33.
weeks. He said that a smile is worth 1 million. Across the city, | :03:33. | :03:38.
Gary is checking his possessions before searching for a hostel bed. | :03:38. | :03:41.
But I haven't got a clue yet, to be honest. | :03:41. | :03:47.
If I get in, I get income if I don't. 21 years, on and off, | :03:47. | :03:52.
walking these streets. It doesn't bother me, it is a bit cold tonight, | :03:52. | :04:01.
though. He goes to find a bed. All the signs pointing towards these | :04:01. | :04:07.
days be much harder than it used to be. Stephen's bed might be a mile | :04:07. | :04:12.
away, but he can't be sure. I don't know until I go to the | :04:12. | :04:18.
place, and hopefully I will have a roof over my head, a cup of tea or | :04:18. | :04:21.
coffee or something like that. What if it falls through? | :04:21. | :04:26.
I will have to lie on the street wrath somewhere. You have people | :04:26. | :04:31.
coming over kicking you when you are sleeping, calling unions. It is | :04:31. | :04:38.
not on, because I could beat anybody. It could be them. | :04:38. | :04:42.
Unfortunately it is not them, it is me, it is myself. | :04:42. | :04:48.
He set off hoping it is worth his while. Every night in Belfast, | :04:48. | :04:52.
these men are far from the only ones. Sleeping rough in this kind | :04:53. | :04:55.
of weather. Tomorrow on BBC Newsline we look at | :04:55. | :04:59.
fears that a change in the law in the New Year could mean more young | :04:59. | :05:06.
Easyjet has apologised for any inconvenience caused to a blind | :05:06. | :05:10.
woman who wasn't allowed onto a flight with her guide dog. The | :05:10. | :05:13.
airline said Joanna Jones didn't have the proper documents to prove | :05:13. | :05:16.
the animal was trained for flying in the cabin of a plane. Mervyn | :05:16. | :05:26.
:05:26. | :05:27. | ||
Flying home for Christmas, and a lead indicator of one passenger on | :05:27. | :05:33.
morning. Joanna Jones, who lives in Lisburn, was stopped from boarding | :05:33. | :05:38.
a flight to Belfast last night in London, because she had no | :05:38. | :05:41.
documentation to show her dog was a guide dog. This letter frustrated | :05:41. | :05:44.
and angry. The guide dog Association could | :05:44. | :05:49.
provide you with a certificate or any documentation when you qualify | :05:49. | :05:54.
but the dock, and I was not also told when I boot the assistance of | :05:54. | :05:58.
the week before last and told them I was travelling with a guide dog, | :05:58. | :06:03.
they never mentioned this paperwork then. | :06:03. | :06:09.
She is wearing her harness and has attack on, that -- I thought that | :06:09. | :06:13.
would be good enough. When you were told that was not, | :06:13. | :06:16.
what does that -- was your response? | :06:16. | :06:20.
Why have I been allowed to fly with them for the last 12 years? | :06:20. | :06:24.
EasyJet says it welcomes and carries hundreds of passengers with | :06:24. | :06:29.
guide dogs in the last year. -- in the last year. | :06:29. | :06:39.
However, on its website, a statement says... | :06:39. | :06:43.
EasyJet has apologised to her for the inconvenience caused. The issue | :06:43. | :06:46.
got up a head of steam after it appeared on social media sites last | :06:46. | :06:53.
night. If it was not already on the airline's radar, it is now. | :06:53. | :06:56.
And you have been joining in the debate today on that story on our | :06:56. | :06:59.
Facebook page. Most people are expressing sympathy with Joanna | :07:00. | :07:09.
:07:10. | :07:19. | ||
It is looking very likely that we'll soon be back paying for | :07:19. | :07:25.
prescriptions. The Health Minister Edwin Poots has been hinting at it | :07:25. | :07:28.
since he came to office in May, but in an Assembly debate this | :07:28. | :07:31.
afternoon Mr Poots said he would put the issue out to consultation | :07:31. | :07:36.
sometime in the New Year. We will move forward Ben de la Parc | :07:36. | :07:42.
of the new year with the consultation on introducing some | :07:42. | :07:49.
form of subscription charge -- prescription charge to provide the | :07:49. | :07:53.
appropriate care for people with life-threatening illnesses. | :07:53. | :07:56.
Tributes have been paid to the County Armagh GAA player who was | :07:56. | :07:59.
murdered at the weekend. James Hughes was in a taxi in Dundalk in | :07:59. | :08:02.
the early hours of Sunday morning when shots were fired into it. Two | :08:02. | :08:05.
other people in the car were other people in the car were | :08:05. | :08:09.
wounded. A 32-year-old man later wounded. A 32-year-old man later | :08:09. | :08:13.
handed himself into the gardai. Julie McCullough reports. | :08:13. | :08:18.
James Hughes was a familiar figure in his home town of Crossmaglen. It | :08:18. | :08:22.
was where he had played for the local Gaelic senior football team. | :08:22. | :08:28.
The 35-year-old was killed outside a house in an estate in Dundalk | :08:28. | :08:32.
just after four o'clock yesterday morning. He was in a taxi when a | :08:32. | :08:38.
man approached the car and fired a number of shocks. There is a strong | :08:38. | :08:43.
sense of shock and disbelief in the tragic killing of James Hughes, a | :08:43. | :08:46.
very well-known young man in their area, very well liked and his | :08:46. | :08:51.
family is very popular. This is a huge tragedy for them and my | :08:51. | :08:54.
sympathy goes out to them, and people are struggling to come to | :08:54. | :09:00.
terms with any rationale for a senseless killing. | :09:00. | :09:04.
Two other people were in the car when James used was killed, 21- | :09:04. | :09:08.
year-old woman and a 40-year-old man who was driving the taxi were | :09:08. | :09:13.
both injured but not seriously. A 32-year-old man has been arrested | :09:13. | :09:19.
after handing himself into a Gardai station. Irish police say they are | :09:19. | :09:21.
investigated a motive for the attack. | :09:21. | :09:24.
The police have confirmed that a suspicious object which caused a | :09:24. | :09:27.
security alert in county Armagh Keady was a bomb. It had been left | :09:27. | :09:31.
near to Keady PSNI station. A number of homes nearby were | :09:31. | :09:33.
evacuated last night after a telephone warning. The army made | :09:34. | :09:37.
the device safe. BBC Newsline has learned that a | :09:37. | :09:40.
file on the controversial killing of a Londonderry teenager could be | :09:40. | :09:42.
handed over to the Public Prosecution Service within a | :09:42. | :09:44.
fortnight. On Friday an inquest found that 15-year-old Daniel | :09:44. | :09:47.
Hegarty was innocent when he was shot dead by a soldier during | :09:47. | :09:52.
Operation Motorman in 1972. As Kevin Sharkey reports, the victim's | :09:52. | :10:00.
family say the soldier should be brought before a court. | :10:00. | :10:06.
The quest for justice has taken a long time. Four decades. It was | :10:06. | :10:10.
delivered by an inquest jury in just four hours. This brought | :10:10. | :10:16.
relief to Daniel Hegarty's family, their brother's good name restored | :10:16. | :10:22.
and a long campaign vindicated. He was cleared of all wrongdoing. | :10:22. | :10:27.
We did not do it out of revenge or hatred, we just wanted justice. We | :10:27. | :10:33.
wanted somebody held to account. We went down to the grave yesterday, | :10:33. | :10:42.
and now he can rest in peace. I will always miss Daniel. | :10:42. | :10:47.
One chapter of this case is closed now, but it raises another question | :10:47. | :10:50.
about the soldier who killed Daniel Hegarty. | :10:50. | :10:54.
The they are referring to someone as soldier become a letter of the | :10:54. | :10:59.
alphabet, and that this individual has killed a 15-year-old child. It | :10:59. | :11:03.
is distressing for the family, but I think the family had always | :11:03. | :11:09.
believed at some stage they would stand before a criminal court. | :11:09. | :11:14.
For the family, law and order dictates nothing less. | :11:14. | :11:18.
I respect the law, treat everyone with the same equal rights and | :11:18. | :11:23.
bring this mantra the court. Despite bringing this man to the | :11:23. | :11:32.
court. What has remained here ever since - the steam on Daniel | :11:32. | :11:36.
Hegarty's good name. What happens now to the soldier who killed him? | :11:36. | :11:40.
The coroner has told BBC Newsline today he will make a decision | :11:40. | :11:50.
:11:50. | :11:53. | ||
You are watching BBC News line. Still to come on the programme... | :11:53. | :11:56.
The Prime Minister has told the House of Commons that he acted in | :11:56. | :11:59.
the UK's best interests last week in Brussels by vetoing attempts to | :11:59. | :12:04.
change the fundamental treaties of the European Union. Has he has he | :12:04. | :12:08.
done the best for Northern Ireland? And an Aladdin's cave of Irish | :12:08. | :12:18.
:12:18. | :12:22. | ||
treasure north and south is put up for sale in Dublin. | :12:22. | :12:27.
Last week. Without Without the safeguards for the Uk's financial | :12:27. | :12:30.
services industry he wanted, David Cameron said it was better to allow | :12:30. | :12:33.
the other countries to close a separate deal for the Eurozone. So, | :12:33. | :12:35.
are the implications for Northern Ireland clearer after today's | :12:35. | :12:37.
Common's statement? Our Business and Economics Editor Jim | :12:37. | :12:42.
Fitzpatrick has been keeping a close eye on developments. | :12:43. | :12:47.
Particular interest for Northern Ireland in this debate. Yes, there | :12:47. | :12:52.
is. There was bad weather forecast, but within Europe there is a storm | :12:52. | :12:57.
forecast. Unfortunately, we could be within the eye of that storm. | :12:57. | :13:01.
We're the only part of the UK with a land border with the eurozone, | :13:01. | :13:05.
the Republic. We are so involved in the economy, in terms of things | :13:05. | :13:11.
like exports but even things like property. There are public property | :13:11. | :13:15.
agency controls our property market. The Republic has a 5 billion loan | :13:15. | :13:23.
from the UK, so we are entirely interwoven in the Northern Ireland | :13:23. | :13:26.
economy with the Republic. Scotland has complained no | :13:26. | :13:30.
attention was given to them in this refusal to go along with the rest | :13:30. | :13:35.
of the eurozone. Does that apply to Northern Ireland, as well? Was | :13:35. | :13:38.
there any attention given to our needs? | :13:38. | :13:41.
The Prime Minister says he looks out for the interests of the UK as | :13:41. | :13:46.
a whole, and he was supported today by the DUP's Nigel Dodds in the | :13:46. | :13:50.
House of Commons. The Prime Minister made the point that UK | :13:50. | :13:53.
financial services are such a big industry, they account for 10% of | :13:53. | :14:00.
taxes. Northern Ireland get a 9 billion paid -- bail out in the | :14:00. | :14:07.
year, and no one asks us to pay that back. Whether these laws are | :14:07. | :14:12.
protected or not, is a moot point. If you are trying to export to the | :14:12. | :14:15.
Republic, you would be more concerned. | :14:15. | :14:19.
The Prime Minister has insisted he is not going soft on the banks and | :14:19. | :14:23.
there will be more explanation about what happened to RBS and the | :14:23. | :14:29.
subsidiary, the Ulster Bank. Yes, a lot of these problems in Europe and | :14:29. | :14:33.
in the UK started in the banking system. Those were certainly a | :14:33. | :14:39.
major factor in Ireland's problems. Ulster Bank, UK owned, and now | :14:39. | :14:44.
taxpayer owned, was a problem child for RBS in the island. It accounted | :14:44. | :14:49.
for a disproportionate amount of its bad loans. You can see why | :14:49. | :14:53.
financial-services at a big part of the UK economy and why Europe wants | :14:53. | :14:56.
to control them slightly differently. That debate is still | :14:56. | :15:05.
Bus drivers were all too often victims of attack in the Troubles. | :15:05. | :15:08.
More than 20 lost their lives, countless others were caught up in | :15:08. | :15:11.
hijackings and burnings as they kept buses running in those | :15:11. | :15:14.
dangerous decades. Tonight they will be honoured for their services. | :15:14. | :15:20.
BBC Newsline's Julian O'Neill reports. | :15:20. | :15:24.
Belfast in the mid- 1970s was a dangerous time and bus drivers will | :15:24. | :15:30.
often easy targets. In the worst cases, it lives were lost keeping | :15:30. | :15:37.
services running. Some will rush died on the job in 1970 free, hit | :15:37. | :15:42.
by a stray loyalist bullet aimed at a security checkpoint. It was a | :15:42. | :15:47.
kind of bravery just to go out in those days and try to pass. I think | :15:47. | :15:52.
are many just realising that today when you asked me was he in danger. | :15:52. | :15:57.
Now I realise that was the kind of courage. A sense of duty came from | :15:57. | :16:07.
:16:07. | :16:09. | ||
the top down. This is the German boss bowls from the time. He | :16:09. | :16:15.
probably carried away as suspect parcel bomb. But do you think will | :16:15. | :16:18.
be tempted to come and carry suspect packages of the buses of | :16:18. | :16:25.
the need arises in the future? told the Chief Constable at | :16:25. | :16:28.
midnight, there is an thing happening one minute after midnight, | :16:28. | :16:34.
it is someone else's problem. often ended up as burning | :16:35. | :16:40.
barricades. Decades later, drivers of finally being honoured at a | :16:40. | :16:44.
civic reception in Belfast tonight. They risk their lives doing nothing | :16:44. | :16:48.
more than their job but they did it with a dedication and commitment | :16:48. | :16:51.
because what they were risking their lives for was to bring a | :16:51. | :16:55.
sense of normality to Belfast at the time and it definitely was not | :16:55. | :17:01.
normal. Today's buses operate in better times but recognition for | :17:01. | :17:06.
pass service has been a long time coming. The head of the grammar | :17:06. | :17:09.
schools group which uses the GL Assessment transfer test says he | :17:09. | :17:12.
regrets the breach of security and copyright which allowed some | :17:12. | :17:15.
children to view past papers. But as our education correspondent | :17:15. | :17:23.
Maggie Taggart reports, a more serious claim has not been proved. | :17:23. | :17:28.
The papers in question were the 2009 English and maths transfer | :17:29. | :17:32.
tests. The Catholic Principals Association raised the alarm when a | :17:32. | :17:36.
parent reported having obtained a copy from a grammar school, | :17:36. | :17:39.
completely against the rules of the commercial company that provides | :17:39. | :17:44.
the test. The investigation could not find evidence that the test had | :17:44. | :17:47.
been seen before people sat it but it did find that copies had been | :17:48. | :17:53.
made and circulated among some pupils practising for the exam the | :17:53. | :17:56.
following year. What we have found is that there was a breach of | :17:56. | :18:00.
security, but the papers were not returned warfare to copied and | :18:00. | :18:05.
handed out as a practice paper. We cannot establish if there was an | :18:05. | :18:09.
unfair advantage to any child because the source of the leak was | :18:09. | :18:16.
not identified. The minister says he is still open to hearing more | :18:16. | :18:19.
evidence of further security breaches. | :18:19. | :18:23.
Now it was a close thing for Mark Allen as he fought for his first | :18:23. | :18:28.
big title. But it was not to be. Antrim's Mark Allen lost narrowly | :18:28. | :18:32.
to Judd Trump of England at the UK Snooker Championships. During the | :18:32. | :18:34.
tournament, Allen criticised World Snooker chairman Barry Hearn about | :18:34. | :18:38.
changing the format of the competition. But he says he would | :18:38. | :18:42.
like to meet to settle their differences. Thomas Kane reports on | :18:42. | :18:50.
what was a thrilling final. He may have looked relaxed but this | :18:50. | :18:55.
was the biggest game that Mark Allen had ever played in. He | :18:55. | :19:04.
trailed by as many as FF5 during the first to 10 contest. But | :19:04. | :19:14.
:19:14. | :19:17. | ||
produced three breaks over 130, to battle back. Then came the turning | :19:17. | :19:27.
:19:27. | :19:28. | ||

Championship as he recovers from a virus. He won't play again until | :20:12. | :20:16.
the New Year. McIlroy couldn't quite finish the season as the | :20:16. | :20:19.
number one player in Europe yesterday. Despite rolling in a few | :20:19. | :20:24.
birdie putts, his challenge faded at the Dubai World Championship. | :20:24. | :20:28.
McIlroy ended the year as runner up in the Race to Dubai to Luke Donald, | :20:28. | :20:35.
with prize money of over 2.7 million. | :20:35. | :20:37.
Belfast swimmer Melanie Nocker clinched her first major | :20:37. | :20:41.

backstroke final at the European Short Course Championships in | :20:44. | :20:50.
Poland. Nocker had set an Irish record in the qualifying heats, and | :20:50. | :20:55.
went even faster in the final. Her medal is a major boost to her | :20:55. | :20:58.
confidence ahead of her attempts to ensure qualification for next | :20:58. | :21:02.

It's expected terms will be agreed between the clubs this week. | :21:11. | :21:14.
Hamilton was a disappointed man at the weekend as Glentoran lost to | :21:14. | :21:17.
Portadown and fell 14 points behind the league leaders, Linfield. | :21:17. | :21:27.

her victory over Crusaders. We are ticking away nicely. We had a few | :21:57. | :22:01.
disappointments but our response was to come out and we have got | :22:01. | :22:08.
five points on the bounce. Cliftonville remained in second | :22:08. | :22:18.

place, defeating Lisburn distillery 3-1. That may be detained League | :22:22. | :22:26.
wins in a row. It took them to equalise for us to lift our game. | :22:26. | :22:35.
But I thought it was a deserved victory. The Portadown manager | :22:35. | :22:42.
celebrated 10 years as manager in the best fashion as his side | :22:42. | :22:46.
defeated Glentoran. Martin O'Neill made winning start | :22:46. | :22:51.
as the new Sunderland manager. But he was made to sweat. His new side | :22:51. | :22:54.
were trailing 1-0 at home to Blackburn up until the last six | :22:54. | :22:57.
minutes of the game, when two spectacular strikes secured all | :22:57. | :23:07.

great. The place lifted, absolutely lifted. Two great goals. It was | :23:23. | :23:26.
magnificent. Ulster's emphatic 31-10 win over | :23:27. | :23:30.
Aironi in the Heineken Cup on Friday night leaves them in second | :23:30. | :23:34.

got Ulster off to a perfect start - and fullback Adam D'Arcy went over | :23:38. | :23:41.
in the same corner to establish a 12-3 half-time lead. There was no | :23:41. | :23:45.
let-up for the Italians after the break as winger Andrew Trimble then | :23:45. | :23:48.
powered through a flagging Italian defence to add five more points, | :23:48. | :23:51.
before Paul Marshall scored from a quick tap to snatch a fourth try | :23:51. | :23:57.
and a vital bonus point. 19-year- old Paddy Jackson then added a fine | :23:57. | :24:02.
fifth try. Ulster meet Aironi against this weekend - hoping for a | :24:02. | :24:07.
repeat of that scoreline! Congratulations to Irish runner | :24:07. | :24:10.

on offer are bred books, manuscripts and maps. It is like a | :25:29. | :25:34.

have lots of books myself so, at a certain point, I have to try to | :25:39. | :25:45.
curtail the urge. Price is key in any auction, but none of the | :25:45. | :25:48.

for the weather. We have the windy spell tomorrow and another later in | :26:24. | :26:28.
the week. Either of these has the potential to bring more disruption | :26:28. | :26:34.
and damaging cuts. Through the next 24 hours, the Met Office is also | :26:34. | :26:41.
warning of snow. We could see a few centimetres on the hills. At the | :26:41. | :26:49.
moment, it is rain. Plenty of it across much of Northern Ireland. It | :26:49. | :26:54.
is accompanied by gusty winds. Then we will clear the rain out of the | :26:54. | :26:59.
way and that is when the cold air starts to sink in. The blustery | :26:59. | :27:04.

increasingly include snow as temperatures dropped towards | :27:07. | :27:17.

freezing. It is a cold and blustery start to the date tomorrow. There | :27:18. | :27:22.
will be more of those sleet and snow showers through the morning | :27:22. | :27:29.
rush hour. Particularly in the West. They may ease off in intensity and | :27:29. | :27:33.
frequency for a little while in the afternoon but it is then that the | :27:33. | :27:39.

could be as high as and two mph. Then we have the next batch of | :27:44. | :27:49.
sleet and snow, particularly over high ground in the north and west. | :27:49. | :27:53.
For the early evening rush hour we could have the potential for | :27:53. | :27:57.
