Good evening. This is BBC Newsline, with Noel Thompson & Donna Traynor. | :00:13. | :00:19.
The headlines this Tuesday evening. Problems on take-off force an | :00:19. | :00:22.
emergency landing for a holiday flight at Belfast International | :00:22. | :00:26.
Airport. As Ian Paisley's family continue | :00:26. | :00:29.
their hospital vigil, the First and Deputy First Ministers' appeal for | :00:29. | :00:34.
prayers from the community. New laws to stop human trafficking | :00:34. | :00:37.
as Northern Ireland has the fastest-growing sex industry in the | :00:37. | :00:47.
:00:47. | :00:48. | ||
A high profile expose into who is using these services could be what | :00:48. | :00:51.
is needed to deter potential perpetrators. | :00:51. | :00:54.
Those numbers keep going up. Northern Ireland tops the European | :00:54. | :00:58.
league for the cost of motoring. The tension is palpable at Ulster's | :00:58. | :01:00.
top table, as David Humphreys tackles the Brian McLaughlin | :01:00. | :01:02.
question. Enjoy the dry weather while it | :01:02. | :01:05.
lasts this evening. It's going to be more unsettled tomorrow. I'll | :01:05. | :01:14.
175 holidaymakers had a terrifying experience this morning when their | :01:14. | :01:16.
Tenerife-bound flight developed technical problems minutes after | :01:16. | :01:19.
take off from Belfast International Airport. Emergency services went on | :01:19. | :01:22.
full alert, as the plane circled the airport for more than an hour | :01:22. | :01:32.
:01:32. | :01:34. | ||
before landing safely. Conor Macauley reports. | :01:34. | :01:39.
This is the moment the aeroplane full of holiday makers and touched | :01:39. | :01:43.
down at Belfast International Airport. The emergency services | :01:43. | :01:48.
were their own number. As it turned out, they were not needed. | :01:48. | :01:53.
Ambulance, fire and police had been sent to the airport after it | :01:53. | :01:57.
emerged that the aeroplane with 100 and 75 air passengers was in | :01:57. | :02:04.
trouble. Its front landing gear would not retract after take-off. | :02:04. | :02:10.
It had no option but to turn back shortly into the flight, circling | :02:10. | :02:18.
for one hour to burn fuel. It made for an anxious wait for passengers. | :02:18. | :02:23.
Some 10 minutes into it, maybe five, we realised the aeroplane wasn't | :02:23. | :02:31.
getting any higher but staying at a steady height. Credit to the crew | :02:31. | :02:41.
:02:41. | :02:43. | ||
and captain. The front nose wheel would not retract. Obviously, they | :02:43. | :02:48.
said they would keep us informed. We were flying around for more than | :02:48. | :02:55.
an hour. A police helicopter came up to inspect the exterior of the | :02:55. | :03:00.
aeroplane. We were all in tears. The airport has a major incident | :03:00. | :03:07.
plan fraught and occasions like this and were pleased it worked. | :03:07. | :03:09.
The captain registered the problem and put the standard procedures in | :03:09. | :03:15.
place. All of our procedures were set in place on the ground with the | :03:15. | :03:21.
emergency services, and everything went as we would expect. If Thomas | :03:21. | :03:25.
Cook brought another aeroplane to Belfast to take the passengers on | :03:25. | :03:31.
to Tenerife. It is believed all made the trip. | :03:31. | :03:34.
An ongoing investigation into the cause of the fatal plane crash at | :03:34. | :03:37.
Cork Airport last year has identified a problem with a sensor | :03:37. | :03:41.
on the right-side engine. Six people died, and six were injured, | :03:41. | :03:44.
when the Manx2 flight from Belfast came down on its third attempt to | :03:44. | :03:47.
land at Cork. An interim report by air accident investigators says | :03:47. | :03:51.
there was a mismatch in what's called the "torque" of power of the | :03:51. | :03:57.
two engines. But the cause of the crash is yet to be established. | :03:57. | :04:00.
The First and Deputy First Ministers have sent best wishes to | :04:00. | :04:04.
Lord Bannside, as he prepares to spend his third night in hospital | :04:04. | :04:07.
in Belfast. The former leader of the DUP is being treated for a | :04:08. | :04:10.
heart condition at the Ulster Hospital, from where BBC Newsline's | :04:10. | :04:20.
:04:20. | :04:20. | ||
Julian O'Neill joins us. What is the latest? The hospital | :04:20. | :04:27.
has issued no medical bulletins during the day on the former First | :04:27. | :04:33.
Minister's condition, at the request of his family. When his son | :04:33. | :04:37.
left hospital with afternoon, he did so without making any comment | :04:37. | :04:46.
to the media on his father's condition. The editor of the local | :04:46. | :04:52.
newspaper has been talking to close friends and family and says that Dr | :04:52. | :04:58.
Paisley has been communicating with relatives. As you say, the First | :04:58. | :05:03.
and Deputy First Ministers have passed on their best wishes to the | :05:03. | :05:08.
family, and support. A man murdered in Lurgan at the | :05:08. | :05:12.
weekend was 43-year-old Andrew Lorimer. His body was found early | :05:12. | :05:15.
on Sunday morning in a flat at Portlec Place in the Mourneview | :05:15. | :05:25.
:05:25. | :05:33. | ||
area. A 21-year-old man is still being questioned by the police. | :05:33. | :05:36.
The trial of two men charged with the murder of Constable Stephen | :05:36. | :05:40.
Carroll, has been told that gun shot residue was found on a jacket | :05:40. | :05:43.
seized from the home of one of the accused. Belfast Crown Court also | :05:43. | :05:46.
heard that explosive particles were found on another coat which the | :05:46. | :05:51.
prosecution claims belongs to the same man. | :05:51. | :05:58.
A forensic scientist told the court that he had found part of calls on | :05:58. | :06:05.
a jacket seized, which were likely to have come from the bullets fired | :06:05. | :06:09.
at the police officer. He also found a brown jacket in the getaway | :06:09. | :06:17.
car, and it is claimed this jacket also belonged to Brendan McConville. | :06:17. | :06:22.
Traces of explosive compounds were found on that jacket. The saddest | :06:22. | :06:30.
inspected a hooded top which it is claimed is owned by John Paul | :06:30. | :06:37.
Wootton. Both men denied any involvement in the shooting, and | :06:37. | :06:44.
the trial continues. Northern Ireland has the fastest | :06:44. | :06:47.
growing sex industry in the UK, according to an organisation which | :06:47. | :06:50.
campaigns for ethnic minorities. The Justice Minister has announced | :06:50. | :07:00.
:07:00. | :07:01. | ||
plans for two new laws to help deal with human trafficking. | :07:01. | :07:08.
A hidden problem, but now a growing one. Since April last year, 26 | :07:08. | :07:13.
victims of human back -- human trafficking have been rescued. 18 | :07:14. | :07:19.
of them had been sexually exploited. An organisation campaigning for | :07:19. | :07:24.
ethnic minorities says the issue is becoming bigger. We know from | :07:24. | :07:28.
police statistics we have the biggest of growing sex industry in | :07:28. | :07:33.
England at the moment. Part of that could be a displaced problem from | :07:33. | :07:41.
the south of Ireland. As the legislative processes move on, it | :07:41. | :07:46.
could displace the problem to Northern Ireland. The Parliament is | :07:46. | :07:51.
taking the problem seriously, Sinn Fein called a debate this afternoon | :07:51. | :07:57.
and said more traffickers need to be prosecuted. We need to put these | :07:57. | :08:03.
people away, we need to make sure a strong message is sent which says | :08:03. | :08:08.
it is not acceptable. That sense of urgency was echoed by everyone who | :08:09. | :08:14.
spoke in the debate. One member saying anyone who used prostitutes | :08:14. | :08:19.
needed to realise the harm they were doing. This is not a film, at | :08:19. | :08:29.
:08:29. | :08:29. | ||
a glamourous profession, this is rape for profit, a high yield low | :08:29. | :08:34.
risk crime. The Justice Minister said he was planning to introduce | :08:34. | :08:38.
two new laws, one meaning anyone from Northern Ireland who commits a | :08:38. | :08:42.
trafficking offence abroad can be prosecuted here. The other will | :08:42. | :08:46.
create a specific offence for trafficking UK citizens within the | :08:46. | :08:53.
UK. I believe it is possible we will have amendments to our law in | :08:53. | :09:00.
line with the European Union directive by April next year. So | :09:00. | :09:09.
we're not lagging any -- it in any way behind. A Northern Ireland | :09:09. | :09:17.
appear it is used -- introduced the debate into the House of Lords | :09:17. | :09:24.
recently. People have been induced to come to the UK with promises of | :09:24. | :09:29.
safety and employment. Of course, they were immediately put in the | :09:29. | :09:35.
hands of a very ruthless type of gang involved in this trafficking. | :09:35. | :09:40.
Politicians acknowledge it is a difficult crime to prosecute but | :09:40. | :09:44.
raids that is have moved investigations Board. Last week a | :09:44. | :09:47.
man was convicted for trafficking for the first time in a Northern | :09:47. | :09:51.
Ireland Court, four or other cases are going through the justice | :09:51. | :09:58.
system. Still to come on the programme: Is | :09:58. | :10:04.
a big sponsorship tat about to be turned off for sport? And Brian | :10:04. | :10:09.
McLaughlin breaks his silence over his sacking as rugby coach. I fill | :10:09. | :10:19.
:10:19. | :10:21. | ||
I have been successful and taken Filling up your car or lorry with | :10:21. | :10:24.
petrol or diesel costs you more here than anywhere in Europe. With | :10:24. | :10:26.
the Consumer Council warning of more increases, our consumer | :10:27. | :10:29.
correspondent Martin Cassidy has been looking at the local pump | :10:29. | :10:39.
:10:39. | :10:41. | ||
prices. 90 to fill an average sized family | :10:41. | :10:48.
saloon, the reality for motorists in Northern Ireland. It was no | :10:48. | :10:52.
surprise when the Consumer Council today said Northern Ireland through | :10:52. | :10:59.
2011 had the dearest fuel prices of any region in the UK. In January | :10:59. | :11:05.
this year, diesel prices locally were the highest in Europe. | :11:05. | :11:10.
According to a figures, compared with Britain, the average price is | :11:10. | :11:15.
one penny higher. The big difference is cross-border. | :11:15. | :11:21.
Motorists will pay 5p more for petrol and 15p more for diesel. No | :11:21. | :11:26.
wonder that many motorists when they cross the border it still fill | :11:26. | :11:31.
up. Yes, there is still a difference in price. With sterling | :11:31. | :11:37.
going to 20%. I do notice one then, on the border here, petrol is | :11:37. | :11:47.
:11:47. | :11:47. | ||
always dearer. I have filled up here are the than in the north | :11:47. | :11:57.
:11:57. | :11:59. | ||
because it is dearer. One dealer contacted us today to say they | :11:59. | :12:02.
looked back at what they were paying 10 years ago it and it was | :12:02. | :12:08.
roughly half what they are paying now. They reckon it is 6 more this | :12:08. | :12:16.
February to fill the family car than this time last year. Obviously, | :12:16. | :12:21.
the price of petrol varies across Northern Ireland. The Consumer | :12:21. | :12:24.
Council has called on the supermarkets to even out the prices | :12:25. | :12:33.
across therefore cuts -- across the forecourts. Retail associations | :12:33. | :12:36.
have been warning that oil companies as recently as last night | :12:36. | :12:42.
had increased the price to them, so further price increases are | :12:42. | :12:48.
expected here on the forecourt. The Consumer Council has said the | :12:48. | :12:52.
government is set to increase fuel duty by three pence a litre, coming | :12:52. | :12:58.
into force in August. It called on local politicians to join support | :12:58. | :13:03.
for a European investigation into fuel prices. | :13:04. | :13:08.
Politicians at Stormont can lobby Westminster. Last year the | :13:08. | :13:15.
government proposed a fuel duty stabiliser for the consumer. That | :13:15. | :13:18.
should be introduced. We want to see that introduced quickly. | :13:18. | :13:28.
Politicians have a role to support this investigation. Calls for an | :13:28. | :13:31.
investigation at European level. Worries for prejudice that prices | :13:31. | :13:36.
may still go up again. That issue has got people talking on our | :13:36. | :13:38.
Facebook page today. With most saying they're struggling to deal | :13:38. | :13:42.
with high fuel costs. You can join in the conversation at facebook.com. | :13:42. | :13:45.
We're updating stories throughout the day on Twitter. And don't | :13:45. | :13:55.
:13:55. | :13:57. | ||
forget you can send us your story A ban on the advertising alcohol | :13:57. | :14:01.
after 9pm on television and radio is one of the recommendations in a | :14:01. | :14:07.
report on how to reduce alcohol intake, plus much -- published by | :14:07. | :14:12.
the Department's -- the Republic's Department of Health. Another | :14:12. | :14:17.
proposal said that the removal of alcohol sponsorship in the sport | :14:17. | :14:24.
industry will not solve alcohol misuse. | :14:24. | :14:26.
A blueprint for addressing Ireland's difficult relationship | :14:26. | :14:32.
with alcohol, one which evidence shows is spreading to get drunk and | :14:32. | :14:36.
binge drinking. The we drink too much alcohol and we want to reduce | :14:36. | :14:46.
:14:46. | :14:46. | ||
that. It is measured in litres of alcohol over the age of 15, it | :14:46. | :14:55.
equates to about 15 litres per adult per year and that is too much. | :14:55. | :15:01.
The group recommends phasing out drinks industry sponsorship of | :15:01. | :15:07.
sports and outdoor events by 2015. Here's an parents have the | :15:07. | :15:13.
strongest link between drinking amounts rather than advertising. If | :15:13. | :15:17.
you look at the fact that beer is the most marketed and advertised | :15:17. | :15:25.
product, its market share is falling, but wine is increasing. | :15:25. | :15:32.
There is something else at play. Some members say a cross-border | :15:32. | :15:36.
approach is essential. Some recommendations will not work if | :15:36. | :15:42.
they are on two separate -- into separate places. You can buy you | :15:42. | :15:49.
drink somewhere else. That could be political dynamite. What about of - | :15:49. | :15:55.
- Brand Ireland and presenting a pint at two presidents and Marks? | :15:55. | :16:04.
We need to think twice about this. The public adulation of alcohol, it | :16:04. | :16:11.
is time to reconsider that approach. The report is to be reviewed by the | :16:11. | :16:14.
Irish government, who are keen to find a cure for Ireland's bn euro | :16:14. | :16:22.
hangover. Ulster Rugby today address the | :16:22. | :16:25.
elephant in the room, confirming Brian McLoughlin will not be the | :16:26. | :16:31.
coach next season. At a frosty press conference, he cut an | :16:32. | :16:39.
isolated and frustrated figure. When David Humphreys and Brian | :16:40. | :16:44.
McLaughlan sat down at the top table, we assumed that what went on | :16:44. | :16:48.
fault would be a well choreographed press conference and a united front. | :16:48. | :16:55.
The next 15 minutes was stilted, awkward and laden with pension. | :16:55. | :16:59.
Much as he has tried to put a brave face on it, last week has been | :16:59. | :17:04.
difficult. There is never a good time. There is never a good time to | :17:04. | :17:09.
get news like this. From that point of view it is not easy for anybody. | :17:09. | :17:16.
Mickey Finn is -- the key thing is that it has happened and I have got | :17:16. | :17:21.
to deal with it. That is very important. The players have got to | :17:22. | :17:27.
be left to what they do best, playing. That is something I have | :17:27. | :17:35.
to deal with an they have to make sure that they can perform at the | :17:35. | :17:38.
optimum level. There are discussions with a number of | :17:38. | :17:43.
candidates. The news did not come out when we wanted it to. It would | :17:43. | :17:46.
have been easier for us to say, these are the changes we are making | :17:47. | :17:51.
and this is the timing. We are in negotiations with some candidates | :17:51. | :17:55.
and hopefully we will be in a position soon to make a decision. | :17:55. | :17:59.
The story was initially leaked last week. Today was about damage | :17:59. | :18:06.
limitation. Humphreys moved to fight crime McLaughlan with the job | :18:06. | :18:09.
he had done and he has agreed to take up a post with the Ulster | :18:09. | :18:17.
Academy. Brian McLaughlan was asked if he saw the move as a sacking. | :18:17. | :18:25.
see it as a move sideways. From my point of view, the situation is, I | :18:25. | :18:29.
have been successful. I feel I have taken the team forward. I am | :18:29. | :18:34.
disappointed that I have not been able to take it to another level. | :18:34. | :18:39.
David Humphreys gave no clues as to who will take it to another level. | :18:39. | :18:44.
The squad must pick themselves up as they bid to reach a Heineken Cup | :18:44. | :18:46.
semi-final for the first time since 1999. | :18:46. | :18:51.
Tommy Bowe is set to return to play for Ulster next season. Although no | :18:51. | :18:55.
contract has yet been signed, it is understood that he has agreed in | :18:55. | :19:00.
principle to return to his native province. The 27-year-old is set to | :19:00. | :19:05.
leave Ospreys with one year of his contract remaining. Munster were | :19:05. | :19:10.
also two -- believed to be in the running to secure his signature. | :19:10. | :19:14.
Steven Ferris has been cited for his tackle in the closing minutes | :19:14. | :19:18.
of Sunday's Six Nations defeat in Dublin. The disciplinary during | :19:18. | :19:21.
will be heard in London tomorrow. Amen hope he will be available to | :19:21. | :19:30.
face France on Saturday. -- Ireland. I have looked at the footage. He | :19:30. | :19:39.
certainly did not drag the player off. The player's left foot | :19:39. | :19:43.
remained on the ground for the entire incident. We are very | :19:43. | :19:49.
disappointed, first of all, with the penalty. We are more | :19:49. | :19:52.
disappointed that he has been sighted. | :19:52. | :19:56.
Michael O'Neill has revealed he hopes to confirm his backroom team | :19:56. | :20:00.
within the next week. Tommy Wright has been widely tipped to become | :20:00. | :20:07.
goalkeeping coach. Billy McKinley is also set to come on board. | :20:07. | :20:10.
With his first match in charge looming at the end of this month, | :20:10. | :20:14.
Michael O'Neill is looking too familiar and experienced names to | :20:14. | :20:20.
join his coaching set-up. He is having to play a waiting game to | :20:20. | :20:23.
secured the services of bulimic Penlee and Tommy Wright, who is | :20:23. | :20:30.
currently working with St Johnstone. -- Billy McKinlay. They have club | :20:30. | :20:34.
commitments and we have to make sure that their clubs are | :20:34. | :20:39.
comfortable with the situation. That is an ongoing situation. | :20:39. | :20:43.
Hopefully we can finalise it. It is good to have someone working in the | :20:43. | :20:51.
Premier League. Tommy been based in Scotland is good for the players | :20:51. | :20:56.
working there. Although he is keen to unearth new talent, all hands | :20:56. | :21:02.
are into his -- in his thoughts. He is set to speak to some veterans | :21:02. | :21:06.
who recently called time on their careers. It is a situation which | :21:06. | :21:11.
has to be let that. I will have conversations with players to pick | :21:12. | :21:20.
their brains. The door would ever be shot to any player. For now, the | :21:20. | :21:25.
boss is keeping all of his options open. | :21:25. | :21:31.
Many sports have been feeling the effects of the recession with the | :21:31. | :21:37.
GAA hit by emigration. Ireland's loss has been London's game. | :21:37. | :21:41.
2011 was the most successful year ever for London's Gaelic football | :21:41. | :21:46.
team. This year, with the Irish economy on its knees, another | :21:46. | :21:52.
influx of Gaelic footballers have arrived in London, including this | :21:52. | :21:58.
26 short graduate. His story is an all-too familiar one. I was able to | :21:58. | :22:04.
get work and use my degree for a year and a half for two years. | :22:04. | :22:09.
After the first year, you could tell the work was drying up. I work | :22:09. | :22:13.
for my father for a year. I've realised that my degree was going | :22:13. | :22:18.
to waste and I had to look elsewhere. I had to look abroad. | :22:18. | :22:22.
Even into county players are feeling the pinch. Tommy Freeman | :22:22. | :22:31.
and Rory weds previously emigrated in search of work. This year, | :22:32. | :22:38.
Morgan Mulvey had to move to London. His emigration good? It is for sure. | :22:38. | :22:42.
We have got a lot of London-born players as well. When they are | :22:42. | :22:49.
working with their club, the top quality players from Ireland, it | :22:49. | :22:52.
improves their football skills and they are playing with top quality | :22:52. | :23:01.
players. It all takes time. Overall, it is positive. If the | :23:01. | :23:05.
opportunities were at home, would you be in London? Definitely not. I | :23:05. | :23:13.
would be at home. I started out for a year. I would be at home if there | :23:13. | :23:19.
was opportunities. 100,000 emigrants have left Irish shores | :23:19. | :23:22.
since 2011. But for Ireland but good for London Gaelic games in the | :23:22. | :23:29.
short term at least. This weekend, two Ulster teams will | :23:29. | :23:33.
travel to Croke Park, dreaming of All Ireland success. The | :23:33. | :23:39.
footballers of Derrytresk will take on Clonbur while the hurlers of | :23:39. | :23:42.
Middletown in County Armagh bid for their first national title at | :23:43. | :23:50.
intermediate level. It is certainly a black and white | :23:50. | :23:58.
issue here... Whether it's the local pub or the local undertaker, | :23:58. | :24:04.
at two colours dominate Middletown. In a County associated with Gaelic | :24:04. | :24:09.
football success, the first of his club are ready for the biggest day | :24:09. | :24:14.
in their history. -- the hurlers. That is why the play, because we | :24:14. | :24:18.
love the game. We want to play in the big final and get a bit of | :24:18. | :24:23.
recognition. It means a lot to me and everybody in the team. This | :24:23. | :24:28.
weekend isn't just about the players on the pitch. The final has | :24:28. | :24:33.
captured the imagination of the entire parish. Everybody is | :24:33. | :24:38.
involved. The town is well decorated and everybody has got | :24:38. | :24:43.
into the spirit of things. Thoroughly delighted. We have done | :24:43. | :24:48.
well and there is a great buzz around the town. It is a big event | :24:48. | :24:57.
for the club. Seeing the boys in Croke Park is a dream come true. | :24:57. | :25:06.
The highest pride that you can get in that black and white jersey. | :25:06. | :25:10.
Winning an All-Ireland title is within touching distance. There is | :25:10. | :25:19.
a spirit and eight balls. There is an abundance of skill in this team. | :25:19. | :25:24.
Everybody comes together. I figure it is our day in the sun and we are | :25:24. | :25:28.
going to enjoy it and it is going to take a good team to beat us. | :25:28. | :25:34.
next stop for the black and white believers is Croke Park. | :25:34. | :25:44.

Let's see what is happening on the weather front. | :25:47. | :25:50.
Keep your umbrella handy. We have had a few days of dry weather and | :25:50. | :25:58.
we have been lucky across --, because across Britain, | :25:58. | :26:02.
temperatures are getting down to minus ten. Here, temperatures stay | :26:02. | :26:08.
above freezing. We may see a touch of ground frost in the east, | :26:08. | :26:12.
especially in the countryside, with temperatures dipping to perhaps | :26:12. | :26:16.
three degrees. The weather front will edge eastwards tomorrow, | :26:16. | :26:22.
becoming increasingly wet and much windier as well. Getting off to a | :26:22. | :26:27.
wet start tomorrow. Eventually, the rain spreads eastwards during the | :26:27. | :26:32.
day. It may take a while before it gets into County Down. It may stay | :26:32. | :26:37.
dry for a good part of the day. Eventually the rain we imagine. The | :26:37. | :26:43.
wind will be much stronger to and it will feel chillier than today. | :26:43. | :26:50.
We hang onto damp weather as we go into the evening tomorrow. It will | :26:50. | :26:57.
become drier and we will hold on to more cloud and not quite as cold. | :26:57. | :27:01.
On Thursday, the front bringing the unsettled weather seems to hover | :27:01. | :27:04.
over us and it means that it is going to state unsettled as we go | :27:05. | :27:10.
into Thursday. The winds will have died down a little bit. We will get | :27:10. | :27:14.
outbreaks of rain. It should not be as wet as tomorrow and the rain | :27:14. | :27:20.
should not be as heavy either. Temperatures will be on the up. We | :27:20. | :27:24.
will hold on to those milder temperatures into the end of the | :27:24. | :27:30.
week. It will stay and settled for Friday. -- and settled. Hopefully, | :27:30. | :27:36.
the weekend will become drier and battles -- writer at the times. The | :27:36. | :27:40.
temperatures are on the rise and we will avoid frosty conditions by | :27:40. | :27:49.
night. We will keep an eye on the wedding to be updated on Twitter. | :27:49. | :27:56. |
