Good evening. This is BBC Newsline with Donna Traynor. The headlines: | :00:19. | :00:25.
the son of an elderly man who died on a hospital trolley says he is | :00:25. | :00:30.
not confident an internal inquiry will uncover the truth. | :00:30. | :00:35.
The leadership contest for the UUP. These two men are the only | :00:35. | :00:44.
candidates. When pay-day loans it go horribly | :00:44. | :00:52.
wrong. A gold finish for Tony McCoy as the | :00:52. | :00:59.
jockey times is finished just right with Synchronised. And a few | :00:59. | :01:03.
showers for St. Patrick's Day and Mother's Day, but not as wet as | :01:03. | :01:07.
today! A son of the elderly man who died | :01:08. | :01:10.
on a hospital trolley says unless the Belfast Health Trust add -- | :01:11. | :01:13.
addresses systemic failures, his father's death will have been in | :01:13. | :01:17.
vain. The 77-year-old, who had motor neurone disease, had been on | :01:17. | :01:22.
the trolley at the Royal Victoria's A&E for almost 24 hours. His son | :01:22. | :01:25.
told us his father had encouraged his partner to go home as he was | :01:25. | :01:31.
worried about her car being hijacked. Our health correspondent | :01:31. | :01:38.
has spoken to the man, who wants to remain anonymous. The man told me | :01:38. | :01:42.
he was speaking to the BBC to insure another family would not | :01:42. | :01:47.
have to go through what his house. He said, something terrible | :01:47. | :01:51.
happened that night. His father was brought to the A&E department with | :01:51. | :01:56.
a chest infection, possibly pneumonia. On Monday 5th March, | :01:56. | :02:01.
sometime around 4am. He had been able to walk in using a walking | :02:01. | :02:07.
eight. He had to live on a trolley as no beds were available. His son | :02:07. | :02:11.
said the story becomes more and more tragic. His father lay on the | :02:11. | :02:17.
trolley for almost 24 hours, for lunch, dinner, and into the | :02:17. | :02:22.
following morning. The man's hospital notes showed he had been | :02:22. | :02:27.
checked and that his vital signs were checked some time before | :02:27. | :02:32.
midnight. Nothing else position down until the ambulance crew found | :02:32. | :02:37.
him up at 5am. I have been told that the man's hands were very cold | :02:37. | :02:41.
and there was clear evidence that the man was dead. A nurse was | :02:41. | :02:45.
overheard saying, clearly this man is dead, and he was moved edge to | :02:45. | :02:55.
:02:55. | :02:56. | ||
the resuscitation room. But debt -- blood pressure and temperature | :02:56. | :02:59.
should be taken every that emits but according to the night this did | :02:59. | :03:09.
:03:09. | :03:14. | ||
not happen. -- every 30 minutes. The man's son said they had no | :03:14. | :03:18.
problem with the staff, in fact, nothing but admiration. He said | :03:18. | :03:26.
their -- they are working in horrendous circumstances. But he | :03:26. | :03:28.
said the family have been getting their information through the media | :03:28. | :03:32.
and have no confidence that the trust's investigation will uncover | :03:32. | :03:38.
the truth. He added, all they are doing is seller taping the problem. | :03:38. | :03:47.
That is no way to run health service. We are keen to hear the | :03:47. | :03:57.
:03:57. | :03:57. | ||
stories of other patients. You can contact us at the e-mail address on | :03:57. | :04:02.
the screen. Nominations for the leading -- | :04:02. | :04:04.
leadership of the Ulster Unionist Party have closed and there are | :04:05. | :04:07.
just two candidates, John McCallister and Mike Nesbitt. The | :04:07. | :04:09.
party's only Stormont Minister Danny Kennedy ruled himself out of | :04:09. | :04:13.
the race. Our political reporter is at the UUP's headquarters in | :04:13. | :04:20.
Belfast. All week we have been waiting for Danny Kennedy's | :04:20. | :04:26.
decision. That is right. It was a question of will he or went he go | :04:27. | :04:32.
for the leadership? We were promised there would be a campaign | :04:32. | :04:38.
Lorch, interviews on Wednesday and Thursday, and they didn't happen -- | :04:38. | :04:41.
launched. This is what Danny Kennedy had to say today. I had | :04:41. | :04:47.
sufficient support within both the constituencies and elected | :04:47. | :04:56.
colleagues, but I feel strongly, having considered it, that a device | :04:56. | :05:00.
of leadership election at any point now for the UUP would not be in the | :05:00. | :05:05.
best interests of the party. So I will not be submitting my | :05:05. | :05:10.
nomination as party leader. there are now just two candidates. | :05:10. | :05:19.
That is right. We have Mike Nesbitt, former victims commissioner. He | :05:19. | :05:25.
would be regarded -- he is well regarded within the centre of the | :05:25. | :05:29.
party. And then we have John McAllister. He wants the party to | :05:29. | :05:34.
go into opposition. He would be regarded on the liberal wing. | :05:34. | :05:38.
happens next? These two candidates will get together with party | :05:38. | :05:48.
:05:48. | :05:50. | ||
officials. Party members will come together after they have been do | :05:50. | :05:56.
baiting. They will come together on March 31st to elect their 15th | :05:56. | :06:00.
leader. Pay-day loan companies lend | :06:00. | :06:07.
millions to people here. But many have been found to be involved in | :06:08. | :06:09.
unacceptable practices. After a month-long undercover survey, | :06:09. | :06:12.
Trading Standards is warning this fast growing industry to raise its | :06:12. | :06:15.
standard. BBC Newsline has also been investigating the human cost | :06:15. | :06:25.
when pay-day loans go wrong a. are aimed at people who need cash | :06:25. | :06:30.
in a hurry but he cannot get a bank loan. Many consumers typically | :06:30. | :06:36.
borrow 400 and repay 500 at their next pay day. What is now emerging | :06:36. | :06:40.
is that many companies are ignoring safeguards intended to protect | :06:40. | :06:47.
borrowers taking on debt they cannot afford. This woman told us | :06:47. | :06:55.
how her son became noted more than 5,000 of pay-day loans. He applied | :06:55. | :07:00.
for several pay-day loans. They all lent to him. I was quite alarmed, | :07:00. | :07:04.
because had they done a credit check history, there would have | :07:04. | :07:07.
seemed he had no means to repay that. He sent me a text message | :07:07. | :07:10.
from another room in the House to say that he had written me a letter | :07:10. | :07:14.
and had left that for me in a certain place. He was in so much | :07:14. | :07:20.
debt, so worried about it, that he could not be too face-to-face? | :07:20. | :07:27.
he wrote a letter, and that was very disturbing to me. -- he could | :07:27. | :07:34.
not speak to you. Thankfully, he is now OK, and his debts are under | :07:34. | :07:39.
control. An investigation of 29 companies he has uncovered what | :07:39. | :07:43.
Trading Standards says are unacceptable practices. | :07:43. | :07:49.
majority of lenders did not quote an EPR. They also indicated that | :07:49. | :07:53.
they would be prepared to do all over loan in the first instance | :07:53. | :07:58.
without explaining the cost and consequences. Trading Standards is | :07:58. | :08:04.
now one in the local pay-day loan West Yorkshire Police industry -- | :08:04. | :08:14.
:08:14. | :08:15. | ||
pay-day loans industry. Still to come on the programme. An | :08:15. | :08:23.
eye on cyber crime. And in memory of a former team-mate. | :08:23. | :08:26.
Our investigation all this week into the secretive world of badger | :08:26. | :08:31.
baiting has provoked a big response on our Facebook page. The majority | :08:31. | :08:34.
of people are appalled at the shocking abuse details and they're | :08:34. | :08:40.
demanding action against the gangs involved. We're going to remind you | :08:41. | :08:47.
now of what we discovered. And I must warn you that this is a | :08:47. | :08:50.
disturbing scene so you may want to look away for a minute. This video | :08:50. | :08:54.
was given to the charity the USPCA and it shows a dog going after a | :08:54. | :08:58.
badger in its sett. Badger baiting is a crime and killing this | :08:58. | :09:03.
protected animal can lead to a prison sentence. But that isn't | :09:03. | :09:05.
stopping gangs digging into setts in broad daylight and watching as | :09:06. | :09:14.
the animals are torn apart. The dogs also suffer terrible injuries. | :09:14. | :09:17.
The US PCA - the USPCA says its work has found that badger-baiting | :09:17. | :09:22.
is widespread. Although police figures show in the past year they | :09:23. | :09:32.
:09:33. | :09:37. | ||
have received just 19 reports of possible badger-baiting. The | :09:37. | :09:40.
environment minister couldn't be here today but yesterday I asked | :09:40. | :09:46.
him why this cry was allowed to continue. -- crime. I think it will | :09:46. | :09:52.
encourage those with knowledge who won here badger setts, and others | :09:52. | :09:56.
who know those who were involved in this activity, I think it will | :09:56. | :10:02.
encourage people to go to the police. The reason I say that is, | :10:02. | :10:06.
the sooner we deploy the full weight of the law, and there is new | :10:06. | :10:13.
law on this, there are now finds up to 5,000. There is imprisonment up | :10:13. | :10:16.
to six months. The sooner the courts have the opportunity to | :10:16. | :10:20.
deploy those against offenders, the sooner you have a full answer to | :10:20. | :10:25.
question. While we are not getting more prosecutions? Why is this | :10:25. | :10:29.
activity not being stamped out? it is not just about the public | :10:30. | :10:34.
making report to the police. It is about the law being enforced. Why, | :10:34. | :10:39.
for example, do we not have a dedicated wildlife crime officer in | :10:39. | :10:44.
the police as they do in other English forces? That is a matter to | :10:44. | :10:50.
shake-up with the police. We give assistance to the police in terms | :10:50. | :10:56.
of where badger of setts might be - - to take up with the police. You | :10:56. | :11:01.
will get no argument with me that there is more the government, the | :11:01. | :11:05.
police and other people need to do, but as I have indicated, we did | :11:05. | :11:12.
some stuff six months ago that is now beginning to bear results. I | :11:12. | :11:16.
think the same sort of dedicated action can their results when it | :11:16. | :11:19.
comes to the issue of badger- baiting and badger killing. Some | :11:19. | :11:24.
will say that a blind eye is being turned to this abuse. Because of | :11:24. | :11:29.
pressure in the farming community for a cull against badgers in the | :11:29. | :11:39.
:11:39. | :11:40. | ||
fight against TP, is that the case? Are you under pressure? I can | :11:40. | :11:48.
confirm that at no time has anybody, a farmer or an official, or anybody | :11:49. | :11:53.
in government ever come to me and say, Paul back. Quite the contrary. | :11:53. | :11:58.
Last year, the Assembly passed new law, the consequence of which is | :11:58. | :12:03.
that we now have the more severe penalties, which includes six | :12:03. | :12:07.
months in prison. Next, another battle against crime | :12:07. | :12:10.
on a international scale. Governments and companies are | :12:10. | :12:12.
constantly trying to protect their computer systems to prevent what's | :12:12. | :12:16.
called a global cyber war. Queen's University in Belfast has brought | :12:16. | :12:19.
together the world's leading experts to discuss how to stop the | :12:19. | :12:29.
:12:29. | :12:34. | ||
It is a new front line in the fight against crime. Countless crimes | :12:34. | :12:39.
every day. Viruses being sent to computer systems. This university | :12:39. | :12:45.
is bringing together people to stop cyber attacks. This expert runs the | :12:45. | :12:51.
biggest internet security company in Europe. It is a very big and | :12:51. | :12:57.
successful business. Cyber criminals have got a very easy job. | :12:57. | :13:02.
It is difficult to stop them and it is a big business. They have got a | :13:02. | :13:08.
lot of money. Living in a world so connected has brought new ways of | :13:08. | :13:13.
doing business and committing crime. There is an even bigger security | :13:13. | :13:18.
issue. If there is a third world war, circuits and servers could be | :13:18. | :13:22.
battlegrounds. For example, electricity grids are run by | :13:22. | :13:27.
computers. One country could disrupt another's network in a | :13:27. | :13:35.
cyber attack. It is very dangerous because of the computer systems. It | :13:35. | :13:43.
is quite simple to develop, the cyber attack. It is almost not | :13:43. | :13:47.
possible to protect. Experts in Belfast were discussing serious | :13:47. | :13:51.
matters and that is why top officials from the US government | :13:51. | :13:56.
were in attendance. It is not just a national problem. It is | :13:56. | :14:00.
international and the more people we have working on it, the better. | :14:00. | :14:06.
Queens are hoping to achieve any future free from cybercrime and | :14:06. | :14:13.
The Duke of Edinburgh arrived at Hillsborough Castle this afternoon | :14:13. | :14:23.
:14:23. | :14:25. | ||
for a one day visit. He met local dignitaries and about 100 young | :14:26. | :14:28.
people who were presented with their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards. | :14:28. | :14:31.
The Prince raised a few laughs as he spoke to recipients and their | :14:32. | :14:35.
families. He was also enjoyed some music performed by the pupils of St | :14:35. | :14:37.
Malachy's College in Belfast. The Award scheme is growing in | :14:37. | :14:40.
popularity here with over 8000 young people joining up. It is very | :14:40. | :14:43.
important and we are delighted we have got a massive increase in | :14:43. | :14:49.
people taking part. Last year, they went up by 27 %. Particularly with | :14:49. | :14:53.
his economic climate, young people realise the significance of awards | :14:53. | :15:00.
On this St Patrick's sporting weekend, it should come as no | :15:00. | :15:03.
surprise to you that an Irish jockey dominated the final day of | :15:03. | :15:08.
Cheltenham. Austin O'Callaghan is here. Who was the man in the form? | :15:08. | :15:11.
Some call AP, others call him Tony. Whatever your preference, the name | :15:11. | :15:16.
McCoy has left a lot of people smiling this evening. Riding the | :15:16. | :15:18.
John Joe O'Neill trained Synchronised, the Moneyglass man | :15:18. | :15:22.
won the festival's showpiece, the Gold Cup, in dramatic fashion. One | :15:22. | :15:25.
of the pre-race favourites Kauto Star was pulled up in the early | :15:25. | :15:32.
stages. From Cheltenham, here's Mark Sidebottom. This is a bronze | :15:32. | :15:37.
of the legendary Gold Cup winner, best mate. But this time it was | :15:37. | :15:44.
Tony McCoy. After 15 years, a second Gold Cup and he has spoken | :15:44. | :15:48.
to Newsline, as did his sister's to Newsline, as did his sister's | :15:48. | :15:54.
brother and father. A Synchronised and the 16 times champion jockey | :15:54. | :15:57.
Tony McCoy is storming up the hill Tony McCoy is storming up the hill | :15:58. | :16:05.
to win the Gold Cup! How does that feel? It feels amazing. It is great | :16:05. | :16:09.
heart and will to win and it is great for a family. I always wanted | :16:09. | :16:15.
to the Gold Cup. A 15 year wait? Yes, a long time but you have got | :16:15. | :16:19.
to believe it is going to happen. I have been working with great people | :16:19. | :16:27.
and it was amazing. It was very bad at the start and somebody said he | :16:27. | :16:33.
jumped at the last. Are you just as proud? I am just so proud of him. | :16:33. | :16:38.
He totally deserved it. He worked hard and was committed and I am | :16:38. | :16:42.
overwhelmed. I honestly did not think I was going to have a better | :16:43. | :16:47.
day than the Grand National but today was even better. He deserves | :16:47. | :16:53.
it. He has had a lot of success but he works hard for it. The only | :16:53. | :16:57.
immediate family member of Tony McCoy not present is his mother, | :16:57. | :17:03.
Claire. If you are watching, the message is get ready for the party! | :17:03. | :17:11.
And I have a feeling it will be a Two Ulster GAA clubs go for All- | :17:11. | :17:13.
Ireland glory at Croke Park tomorrow. Loughgiel of Antrim | :17:13. | :17:15.
contest the hurling club final while reigning All-Ireland club | :17:15. | :17:17.
champions Crossmaglen play Garrycastle of Westmeath in the | :17:17. | :17:20.
football decider. And the motivation to win is particularly | :17:20. | :17:30.
:17:30. | :17:31. | ||
There is a saying about this team, that they are not beaten until you | :17:32. | :17:37.
read about it in the paper the next day. Tomorrow, they go to Croke | :17:37. | :17:42.
Park in search of basic the title and driving them on more than any | :17:42. | :17:47.
other is the memory of a former team mate. Last December, James | :17:47. | :17:53.
used was shot dead in a taxi. His death had a profound effect on the | :17:54. | :17:59.
players and parish. It is not shouted aloud by every member of | :17:59. | :18:03.
the team but we have got a sense we are doing this for him will stop we | :18:03. | :18:13.
are doing it for the community --. We are doing it for the community. | :18:13. | :18:19.
Before the funeral, and even after, I was working in the village hall | :18:19. | :18:24.
and nobody wanted to leave it. It was not a mad session. Everybody | :18:24. | :18:33.
felt the same. It is in everybody's head and nobody forgets that. | :18:33. | :18:39.
People are going to his grave all the time and then moving on. That | :18:39. | :18:43.
is always there and it is motivating them and helping them | :18:43. | :18:46.
training and helping them through the match but we do not talk about | :18:46. | :18:51.
it a lot. Outwardly, the build up has been similar to previous years, | :18:52. | :18:57.
with players immersing themselves in community events, like cooking | :18:57. | :19:02.
breakfast for the supporters. But internally, the memory of the their | :19:03. | :19:10.
team-mate is shaping their drive Crossmaglen Rangers and club finals | :19:10. | :19:13.
go hand in hand, but tomorrow will be a new experience for the hurlers | :19:13. | :19:16.
of Loughgiel. They're playing in their first All-Ireland final since | :19:16. | :19:18.
1983. Offaly champions Coolderry stand between the Shamrocks and a | :19:18. | :19:26.
second title. You get caught up in all of the razzmatazz. But as | :19:26. | :19:32.
players, you have to prepare yourself and keep focused. Live | :19:32. | :19:35.
coverage on BBC Radio Ulster medium wave tomorrow afternoon from half- | :19:35. | :19:38.
past-one. Ireland's rugby management invited folk singer | :19:38. | :19:41.
Christy Moore to the team hotel to help motivate the players for | :19:41. | :19:44.
tomorrow's big game at Twickenham. Not that they need much gee-ing up. | :19:44. | :19:48.
Ireland can't win the Six Nations. But they can end England's hopes of | :19:48. | :19:55.
doing so. He has filled the captain's position perfectly and | :19:55. | :20:00.
tomorrow, a milestone has Rory Best becomes the most capped Irish | :20:00. | :20:07.
trucker ever. The mission is simple, to extinguish English hopes of a | :20:07. | :20:13.
Six Nations Championship. They have always been there and thereabouts | :20:13. | :20:18.
and you always want to beat the best. In the many years that they | :20:18. | :20:22.
have been the team to beat, from that point of view it is nice to be | :20:22. | :20:29.
the top team. This game could be for a wooden spoon and it would | :20:29. | :20:34.
still have the same amount of hype, if you were playing England in any | :20:34. | :20:39.
game, you would still want Ireland to win. Irish supporters living in | :20:39. | :20:45.
London think the same. You do not want to go back to work on Monday | :20:45. | :20:51.
with a defeat. It is St Patrick's Day. Cannot lose! The English think | :20:51. | :20:55.
they are the best at everything. We are Irish at the end of the day and | :20:55. | :20:59.
we will support Ireland and we want to beat England no matter what. It | :20:59. | :21:03.
is always good to go to work on Monday morning with your head held | :21:03. | :21:09.
high. This will soon be Europe's biggest building and it is now just | :21:09. | :21:16.
40 fit in the world. It is a best work in progress but not yet top of | :21:16. | :21:19.
the pile but it does not matter when the English play the Irish | :21:19. | :21:23.
because the Irish supporters and players think it is a game Ireland | :21:23. | :21:32.
simply must win, especially on St Patrick's Day. 5 o'clock kick-off | :21:32. | :21:36.
tomorrow. Tomorrow, Ireland's men's hockey team can take a huge step | :21:36. | :21:39.
towards this summer's Olympics. Last night Ireland beat Chile 3-0 | :21:39. | :21:42.
in the qualifying tournament in Dublin - and so they now only need | :21:42. | :21:45.
draw with Malaysia tomorrow afternoon to make the final, where | :21:45. | :21:52.
Korea will stand between them and a place at London 2012. And in ice | :21:52. | :21:55.
hockey, a capacity crowd of 7000 is expected at the Odyssey where the | :21:55. | :21:58.
Belfast Giants can secure the Elite League title if they beat nearest | :21:58. | :22:04.
rivals the Sheffield Steelers. Good luck to Carl Frampton, who defends | :22:04. | :22:08.
his Commonwealth super bantamweight title in Sheffield tomorrow night. | :22:08. | :22:11.
And Ireland's cricketers won their Twenty20 World Cup qualifier today, | :22:11. | :22:14.
beating the USA by 64 runs. And finally the Circuit of Ireland | :22:14. | :22:23.
Rally. Donna, I know you have a Yes, my father was involved in the | :22:23. | :22:27.

the starting stage on Good Friday is in the Titanic Quarter in | :22:30. | :22:40.

arguably the biggest event on the island and drivers worldwide will | :22:47. | :22:52.
be competing. It is the first time in history that it has come to this | :22:52. | :23:00.
part of Belfast, beneath the famous cities and barks. It will just be - | :23:00. | :23:07.
- city landmarks. It will just be so exciting. And the timing, Good | :23:07. | :23:10.
Friday, it is perfect for the launch of the Titanic Belfast | :23:10. | :23:18.
building. The time has come for me to try this out. I am extremely | :23:18. | :23:28.
:23:28. | :23:52. | ||
nervous and gripping for my life. A How do you do this?! Like eight is | :23:52. | :24:02.

funny? Incredible. -- like it is funny? I am shaking like a leak. I | :24:06. | :24:12.
am glad that is over. Thank you very much but I need to get out. | :24:12. | :24:18.
Never again. Never again. Any job way you get home in one piece is a | :24:18. | :24:28.

good one. Now the weather. We have good one. Now the weather. We have | :24:29. | :24:31.
St Patrick's Day, Mother's Day and Sunday and a lot of people out and | :24:31. | :24:38.
about. Not looking bad. Some doubt about cloud and the distribution of | :24:38. | :24:44.
showers. But for most of us it will be more dry than wet and we will | :24:44. | :24:50.
get sunshine returning. But not much of that today. We had a thick | :24:50. | :24:56.
cloud and it was pretty wet across central and eastern areas. Much of | :24:56. | :25:02.
that rain has cleared out of the way but showers tonight. It will | :25:02. | :25:07.
become increasingly dry and clearer spells will be developing. It is | :25:07. | :25:12.
going to become quite cold. Temperatures as low as two degrees. | :25:12. | :25:17.
Frost is likely for a time. It might start going later in the | :25:17. | :25:24.
night. I think it will be bright for St Patrick's Day poor most of | :25:24. | :25:28.
us and we'll be bright for the weekend and it will be more dry | :25:29. | :25:34.
than today. Cloudy but by the middle of the morning it is lifting | :25:34. | :25:39.
and braking and some sunshine. One exception could be in the South | :25:39. | :25:46.
East. Cloud could be a bit stubborn in these areas. But it will get | :25:46. | :25:52.
bright at times. The best of these sunshine will be further north. | :25:52. | :25:59.
Showers breaking out in the afternoon but hopefully not heavy. | :25:59. | :26:04.
Similar temperatures expected at Twickenham, where the rugby starts | :26:04. | :26:08.
at 5 o'clock. A bit of rain in the after being but we hope it will be | :26:08. | :26:15.
out of the way by then. Just a few showers tonight but temperatures | :26:15. | :26:21.
below freezing in places on Sunday morning. That it should lift on | :26:21. | :26:27.
Mother's Day. Getting bright but a risk of some showers. If you are | :26:27. | :26:32.
out and about, contact us and let out and about, contact us and let | :26:32. | :26:37.
us know what it is like. Have a good weekend. It should not be too | :26:37. | :26:43. |
