Welcome to BBC Newsline with Noel Thompson and Donna Traynor. The

:00:16.:00:23.

headlines this evening: Community anger in Londonderry as dissidents

:00:23.:00:33.
:00:33.:00:33.

leave a bomb at the family home of a police officer: I could have been

:00:33.:00:37.

making a funeral arrangements for that baby this morning. The parents

:00:37.:00:40.

of a baby who died from the pseudomonas infection ask if a

:00:40.:00:43.

health trust failed to follow hygiene guidelines. We're at a

:00:43.:00:46.

registry office in Larne as five people are arrested on suspicion of

:00:46.:00:50.

taking part in a sham marriage. Lord Empey becomes the new Ulster

:00:50.:00:56.

Unionist chairman but he wasn't the first choice. I will have the story.

:00:56.:00:59.

We've been to the stables of one of the horses that failed to finish

:00:59.:01:04.

Saturday's controversial Grand National.

:01:04.:01:09.

There is plenty of rain to come tonight and strong winds, too. I'll

:01:09.:01:14.

have all the details of what is in store for the rest of the week.

:01:14.:01:16.

Dissident republicans targeted the elderly parents of a police officer

:01:16.:01:21.

in Londonderry last night. The pipe bomb, which didn't go off, was left

:01:21.:01:25.

under their car. A senior police officer has described the attack as

:01:25.:01:28.

cowardly and reckless. It is the second time the officer's family

:01:28.:01:32.

has faced such a threat. Last night's attack was at Drumleck

:01:32.:01:42.
:01:42.:01:44.

Drive in Shantallow. Laura and her six-month-old son,

:01:44.:01:48.

Leo, were caught up in the alert last night. They had to flee their

:01:48.:01:53.

home around midnight after police evacuated and number of houses.

:01:53.:01:59.

was just terrifying. We were told we had to leave straight away. I

:01:59.:02:05.

had to let the baby out of his bed and they had to go up the street in

:02:06.:02:10.

her bare feet. They were not allowed back for food or nappies. I

:02:10.:02:13.

could have been making funeral arrangements for this baby this

:02:13.:02:20.

morning. Detectives here say two men were seen acting suspiciously

:02:20.:02:24.

around 9pm in Drumleck Drive last night. They then placed the device

:02:24.:02:28.

underneath a car. Police are in no doubt about the motivation for the

:02:28.:02:34.

attack. As police officers, we are told to keep an open mind but I

:02:34.:02:39.

have no doubt this was intended to intimidate or injure the elderly

:02:39.:02:44.

parents of a police officer. Your response to that? The only response

:02:44.:02:49.

is to at Radley condemn it because it was cowardly and reckless in the

:02:49.:02:53.

extreme. It could have caught anybody up in the blast and

:02:53.:02:57.

seriously injured them. Detectives who were carrying out extensive

:02:57.:03:00.

door-to-door inquiries are believed dissident republicans were behind

:03:00.:03:03.

the attack and it is now the second time the family has been targeted

:03:03.:03:07.

but police said the officer involved who does not live at the

:03:07.:03:12.

address remains committed to his career in the PSNI out.

:03:12.:03:15.

In north Belfast, people have been able to return to their homes after

:03:15.:03:18.

a bomb alert. A car in a laneway close to Ligoniel Primary School

:03:18.:03:23.

was examined. There was no device inside.

:03:23.:03:26.

The solicitor representing the family of the first child who died

:03:26.:03:29.

from pseudomonas has told the BBC that senior health officials must

:03:29.:03:32.

be asked if they did their job properly before the outbreak and if

:03:32.:03:36.

not, why not? An interim report found that heavy growth of the

:03:36.:03:39.

bacteria were found in a tap in intensive care unit at Altnagelvin

:03:39.:03:43.

Hospital in Londonderry. Caloan Burke, who was premature, died in

:03:43.:03:53.
:03:53.:03:56.

December. Three others died in hospital in Belfast.

:03:56.:03:59.

Disappointed and shocked, this is one of the four couples after their

:03:59.:04:03.

meeting with the health minister over a week ago. Their son, Caloan,

:04:03.:04:07.

he was being cared for in a Altnagelvin hospital was the first

:04:07.:04:10.

baby to die in the pseudomonas outbreak. Distressed by unfolding

:04:10.:04:18.

events, they their solicitor to speak on their behalf. The death of

:04:18.:04:22.

any party causes a lot of heartbreak and concern to the

:04:22.:04:26.

parents and the greater family and the fact that these four babies

:04:26.:04:30.

died whilst in the care of the health service has to be treated

:04:30.:04:34.

exceptionally seriously. According to the couple, the report raises

:04:34.:04:44.
:04:44.:05:12.

There are children that have died, parents who have lost loved ones

:05:12.:05:16.

and they are still going through the mourning period and this will

:05:16.:05:20.

want to know whether people do their jobs. And it doesn't take a

:05:20.:05:26.

lot to say, yes, they did or no, we dropped the ball. Unfortunately by

:05:26.:05:30.

dropping the ball, if lives could have been saved, that has serious

:05:30.:05:34.

consequences for the families and children. The family also want to

:05:34.:05:38.

know why, out of the three babies who contracted the infection at

:05:38.:05:43.

Altnagelvin, while their son had to die. The sooner we get that final

:05:43.:05:47.

report, the better, because any of the unanswered questions, we can

:05:47.:05:51.

get the answers to that and maybe allow people to find out exactly

:05:51.:05:56.

what happened with the BBC. Western Health Trust has told the

:05:56.:06:00.

BBC that they appreciate the family wants answers but they are

:06:00.:06:04.

participating fully in a review and will not comment until the report

:06:04.:06:07.

just finished. While the parents of the four babies were never know for

:06:07.:06:13.

sure that their children would have survived if they hadn't have

:06:13.:06:16.

contracted the infection will stop according to the couples who have

:06:16.:06:20.

spoken out, what they can establish is whether the hospitals provided

:06:20.:06:23.

the safest environment possible for their sick children and if not, why

:06:23.:06:26.

not? Five people have been arrested in

:06:26.:06:30.

Larne by officials investigating a suspected sham marriage. The UK

:06:30.:06:33.

Border Agency moved in and stopped a wedding just 30 minutes before it

:06:33.:06:37.

was about to happen at the registry office. The bride and groom, two

:06:37.:06:47.
:06:47.:06:49.

female witnesses and a male guest were arrested.

:06:49.:06:54.

The moment UK Border Agency officers made in to stop what they

:06:54.:06:59.

suspect is a so-called sham wedding. The bribe and groom arrived here

:06:59.:07:03.

expecting to get married but instead, found themselves being

:07:03.:07:07.

questioned about their intentions. Investigators separate the couple

:07:07.:07:11.

and their guests. They have reason to believe that they may be

:07:11.:07:15.

breaching immigration laws with a marriage of convenience. Emigration

:07:15.:07:19.

it says sham weddings are a recurring problem here and in the

:07:19.:07:25.

UK. We are cracking down on sham marriages. These are basically

:07:25.:07:29.

marriages of convenience to allow people from outside the European

:07:29.:07:33.

Union to get around the immigration laws and we have arrested a number

:07:33.:07:37.

of people today on suspicion of taking part in such a sham marriage.

:07:37.:07:41.

After one hour of questioning, the couple are arrested. There would be

:07:41.:07:51.

grim on suspicion of taking residence unlawfully. The bribe and

:07:51.:07:57.

groom arrested here today are a 26 year-old Portuguese woman and a

:07:57.:08:01.

Bangladeshi man who is 29. They have now been taken to Ballymena

:08:01.:08:04.

police station for further questioning.

:08:04.:08:07.

Children in East Belfast who played with needles thought to have been

:08:07.:08:10.

used for drugs were taken to hospital for infection tests at the

:08:10.:08:13.

weekend. Police took the needles from a park off the Newtownards

:08:13.:08:17.

Road on Friday after four boys, one as young as seven, had been found

:08:17.:08:19.

playing with them. On Saturday a nine year-old girl found needles

:08:20.:08:23.

lying on the pavement a short distance from the park and not far

:08:23.:08:33.

from her home. It wasn't until we got to casualty

:08:33.:08:43.
:08:43.:08:43.

and the four boys who got together said, look where I stuck Mein! You

:08:43.:08:46.

think you talk to your child about not talking to strangers but you

:08:46.:08:54.

never think to say, don't pick up needles. They were still finding

:08:54.:08:58.

needles last night in the area so how many more kids will be heard

:08:58.:09:00.

before something is done about this?

:09:00.:09:03.

Police are still trying to find a cause of the fatal house fire in

:09:03.:09:06.

Dungannon at the weekend. Betty McGirr and her daughter, Deidre,

:09:06.:09:09.

died when flames swept through a flat on the outskirts of the town.

:09:09.:09:12.

Neighbours said it happened so quickly that no one was able to

:09:12.:09:19.

help. Friends and neighbours have laid

:09:19.:09:22.

flowers at near the scene of the fire. People you cannot believe how

:09:22.:09:28.

quickly they lost to respected members of this small community. 71

:09:28.:09:32.

year-old Betty Maghera had been visiting her daughter's flat on

:09:32.:09:36.

Saturday night. They both died when fire broke out there some time

:09:36.:09:40.

before 10pm. Neighbours described how the flames took hold quickly

:09:40.:09:44.

and burned intensely. One woman told me she saw the flames coming

:09:44.:09:49.

from the hallway at the front of the flats. People ran to help but

:09:49.:09:53.

what everyone said was, when they got here, there was no sound coming

:09:53.:09:59.

from inside the flat, no one crying out for help. The bodies of Deidre,

:09:59.:10:03.

he was 38, and her mother, were taken on the scene last night. The

:10:03.:10:07.

block of four flats has now been boarded up. Before that was done,

:10:07.:10:11.

police spent much of yesterday examining the scene. There was a

:10:11.:10:15.

detailed search of the property in an attempt to establish exactly

:10:15.:10:22.

what caused the blaze. People are finding it hard to understand why

:10:22.:10:25.

and higher and it just happened so quickly. People cannot get their

:10:25.:10:30.

heads around it and are anxiously waiting on the outcome of the PSNI

:10:30.:10:34.

and fire service investigation of. A man in his Thirties, understood

:10:34.:10:39.

to be Deidre's partner, did manage to escape the flames. Police have

:10:39.:10:42.

asked anyone who noticed any unusual activity are things they

:10:43.:10:48.

may have any other information to contact detectives in Dungannon.

:10:48.:10:52.

Still to come on the programme: I am live on the MS Balmoral which is

:10:52.:10:55.

approaching Halifax in Nova Scotia, the place where many of the

:10:55.:11:05.
:11:05.:11:06.

Titanic's victims are buried. Riot police are called in after

:11:06.:11:15.

crowd violence breaks out during a weekend boxing bout.

:11:15.:11:19.

If you want to fight so much, joined a boxing club and fight in

:11:19.:11:23.

the ring but don't spoil everyone else's fund.

:11:23.:11:27.

The former UUP leader Lord Empey is to be the new chairman of the party,

:11:27.:11:30.

but he wasn't the first choice of the leader Mike Nesbitt. Our

:11:30.:11:35.

political correspondent joins us live from Stormont. Who turned it

:11:35.:11:40.

down? The party confirmed Lord Empey was to be the new party

:11:40.:11:44.

chairman this morning but what they didn't tell us is that he was not

:11:44.:11:48.

the first choice. That was James Cooper, a former party chairman who

:11:48.:11:54.

dates back to the era of David Trimble. The decision is Mike

:11:54.:12:04.
:12:04.:12:05.

Nesbitt's as leader. He can turn -- choose the chairman. He stopped

:12:05.:12:10.

short of actually confirming this. I certainly had a conversation with

:12:10.:12:13.

James Cooper, many conversations with different people and looked at

:12:13.:12:18.

all sorts of premonitions. It is a jigsaw when you have only four

:12:18.:12:23.

picks. I could have used six or seven. Are you saying you didn't

:12:23.:12:27.

offer the job of chairman at a James Cooper? Any discussions I had

:12:27.:12:30.

were private and we discussed many combinations because I only have

:12:30.:12:39.

for perks. I am delighted that Lord Empey has agreed to be the chairman.

:12:39.:12:43.

What have we heard from Mr Kerr? finally managed to get a word with

:12:43.:12:47.

him this afternoon after I had interviewed a Mike Nesbitt. He

:12:47.:12:51.

confirmed that he had turned the job down and said he had been too

:12:51.:12:56.

busy to take it up. He said it was an important and challenging post

:12:56.:13:03.

and that whoever to get should be close to Belfast and he is a

:13:03.:13:07.

solicitor and is based in Enniskillen. What has Lord Empey

:13:07.:13:11.

said? I spoke to him this afternoon and he said the post had not yet

:13:11.:13:15.

been ratified although I think that is just a formality and and and it

:13:15.:13:25.
:13:25.:13:26.

was, he would not be commenting. The founder of the creamy layer

:13:26.:13:32.

committee has died. He set up the organisation in 1965 to promote

:13:32.:13:34.

Christian at reconciliation and peace building.

:13:34.:13:38.

An inquiry into the hospital death of a four year-old boy has had an

:13:38.:13:40.

expert witness say that the quantity of fluid given to him

:13:40.:13:46.

during surgery was inappropriate and massive. Adam Strain died in

:13:46.:13:48.

the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children in November 1995 following

:13:48.:13:54.

a kidney transplant. The inquiry is also looking into the deaths of

:13:54.:13:57.

four other children. A barrister for the inquiry said another

:13:57.:13:59.

medical expert found senior people involved in the operation had not

:13:59.:14:05.

worked effectively as a team. After an emotional memorial weekend in

:14:05.:14:08.

the Atlantic, the ship which has been tracing the route of the

:14:08.:14:12.

Titanic is continuing on its journey to New York. Chris Buckler

:14:12.:14:22.

joins us from the Balmoral. Where are you now, Chris? We are fast

:14:22.:14:26.

approaching the Canadian coast. For the passengers on board, it has

:14:26.:14:34.

been seven long days at sea. Where they are headed next is Halifax in

:14:34.:14:39.

Nova Scotia, a place that is very important to many families because

:14:39.:14:42.

it is where a lot of victims are buried.

:14:42.:14:47.

Words that people never had a chance to say now a form part of

:14:48.:14:53.

the tribute to the victims of the Titanic. Only official rates could

:14:53.:14:57.

be thrown into the water to protect the wreck of the Titanic so this

:14:57.:15:04.

room has become a memorial. All showing their respect to the dead.

:15:04.:15:09.

This ship is now a many miles from where the Titanic sank. Some bodies

:15:09.:15:13.

were never recovered from the sea but many of those that where are

:15:13.:15:17.

buried in Halifax in Nova Scotia. For some families, it is their

:15:17.:15:21.

first chance to visit those graveyards. Something they are

:15:21.:15:24.

doing for other generations. My great-grandfather and never even

:15:24.:15:29.

knew where he was buried so it was too late for him to travel when we

:15:29.:15:36.

found out. At they will be nice for us to go there and represent the

:15:36.:15:43.

family and knowing that somebody has been there. And it is

:15:43.:15:47.

originally from County Antrim but but for six months, Halifax was a

:15:47.:15:55.

home and she says the cemeteries are incredibly important.

:15:55.:15:59.

people themselves were very concerned about everything that

:15:59.:16:03.

happened and would like to, not so much celebrate the Titanic, but

:16:03.:16:09.

commiserate. Vessels from Halifax helped recover many bodies. Now the

:16:09.:16:12.

ship is selling towards that city and for some families, it is a

:16:12.:16:18.

chance to give their banks. It has been a very emotional

:16:18.:16:22.

weekend here. Passengers lining these very decks in order to pay

:16:22.:16:26.

tribute but going to Halifax is incredibly important to so many of

:16:26.:16:34.

those relatives and they will have that chance. They would have the

:16:34.:16:37.

chance to remember those loved ones who were lost so long ago and it

:16:37.:16:41.

might be a generation apart but nonetheless, they feel it is

:16:41.:16:45.

important to go and see the graves and lay tributes.

:16:45.:16:48.

One lesser known story relating to the Titanic is that of the role of

:16:48.:16:52.

the ship, the SS Californian, on the night of the sinking. It was en

:16:52.:16:55.

route from Boston to London and it was believed to be close enough to

:16:55.:16:59.

go to the Titanic's aid. But it didn't and tonight on BBC One, a

:17:00.:17:02.

courtroom drama centres on whether she could have assisted in the

:17:02.:17:05.

rescue, possibly saving some of the 1500 passengers and crew who

:17:05.:17:08.

perished. The programme called SOS - a Titanic Inquiry, is set in

:17:09.:17:18.
:17:19.:17:21.

Westminster in 1912 and is written by the Hole-in-the-Wall Gang.

:17:21.:17:25.

100 years ago when things went wrong, they did exactly what they

:17:25.:17:32.

do today, they had an inquiry and this inquiry found as fact that the

:17:32.:17:35.

Californian was close enough to have gone and saved everyone. They

:17:35.:17:40.

would have been there in getting minutes. The reason why they didn't

:17:40.:17:44.

go remains a mystery and that is the fascinating thing about this,

:17:44.:17:48.

we will never know why they didn't go to the rescue.

:17:48.:17:51.

You can see that drama here on BBC One tonight at 9pm. A special

:17:51.:17:54.

programme marking the day of the sinking called Titanic Centenary is

:17:54.:17:57.

available to view on the BBC iPlayer. In it, there is extended

:17:57.:18:00.

coverage of yesterday's memorial services in the Atlantic and in

:18:00.:18:03.

Belfast and coverage from Southampton and Cobh. Our website

:18:03.:18:06.

is packed with pictures, articles and interviews as well as a link to

:18:06.:18:13.

the iPlayer. You can keep across all things Titanic on Twitter.

:18:13.:18:17.

What is future for horse racing's most famous jumps race? Does the

:18:17.:18:20.

Grand National have one? These are the questions being asked after

:18:20.:18:26.

Saturday's race in which two horses died. Austin O'Callaghan is here.

:18:26.:18:29.

Opinion seems to be divided. Saturday's race certainly took its

:18:29.:18:33.

toll on some local racing connections. Tony McCoy's Gold Cup

:18:33.:18:36.

winning mount, Synchronised, was one of the animals put down.

:18:36.:18:38.

Another horse, Killyglen, which was trained in Larne, unseated its

:18:39.:18:48.
:18:49.:18:53.

rider during the race. The trainer is a contented man this

:18:53.:18:56.

afternoon because back in his county and unstable is a fit and

:18:56.:19:01.

healthy Killyglen, one of 25 horses he failed to finish this year's

:19:01.:19:11.
:19:11.:19:13.

Grand National. Tony McCoy, his horse spooked here, was not as

:19:13.:19:16.

fortunate. He broke a leg and was later put down, leaving some to

:19:17.:19:21.

question the future of the sport. Like any sport, you always have to

:19:22.:19:26.

be looking at the safety angle and make it as safe as you can. I think

:19:26.:19:32.

banning it would be out of the question. I think everyone has to

:19:32.:19:36.

be careful that it isn't and knee- jerk reaction and think that we

:19:36.:19:40.

must make change for change's sake. We must have a hard thing about it

:19:40.:19:44.

and make the right changes if any. It is a debate that will run and

:19:44.:19:51.

run. What about Killyglen's immediate future? Killyglen, we get

:19:51.:19:58.

him back 100% sound and fighting fit again. Whether he had won the

:19:58.:20:01.

Grand National or finish to the way he did, he was always going to be

:20:01.:20:07.

going for a summer break after this so we have a couple of months off.

:20:07.:20:12.

He is likely that! Get some other than sunshine on his back and

:20:12.:20:20.

hopefully we will get 10 back and plan a campaign for him. Success at

:20:20.:20:22.

the 2013 Grand National, the ultimate aim.

:20:22.:20:26.

The Celtic manager Neil Lennon has found himself in the middle of a

:20:26.:20:30.

Twitter row following the club's Scottish Cup defeat to Hearts.

:20:30.:20:33.

Lennon, seen here confronting referee at the end of the match,

:20:33.:20:36.

posted a message on the social networking site claiming, it is

:20:36.:20:41.

personal, after a number of decisions went against his team.

:20:41.:20:45.

Locally, Linfield remain on course for the domestic double. The league

:20:45.:20:48.

champions strolled into the final of the Irish Cup with a 7-0 win
