It's official - here's the programme for the City of Culture. | :01:00. | :01:05.
Join me live for the details. One Sam Maguire, and now eight All-Star | :01:05. | :01:10.
football awards for Donegal. the cold air is moving in so we're | :01:10. | :01:20.
:01:20. | :01:26. | ||
in for a chilly spell of weather, but for how long? Find out shortly. | :01:26. | :01:29.
A 25-year-old medic from Comber in County Down, Channing Day has | :01:29. | :01:32.
become the tenth member of the armed forces from Northern Ireland | :01:32. | :01:35.
to be killed in the conflict in Afghanistan. She died in an | :01:35. | :01:38.
incident along with another soldier and an Afghan policeman while on | :01:38. | :01:42.
patrol in the Nahri Saraj District of Helmand Province. The news was | :01:42. | :01:51.
broken to her family last night. Chris Page has more. Tanning they | :01:51. | :01:55.
had wanted to be his or doesn't she was at school will stop -- a | :01:55. | :02:02.
Channing Day. The principle remembers well how she went on | :02:02. | :02:10.
work-experience but the Army when she was 16. She was a very pleasant | :02:10. | :02:16.
young lady. A really good report. That did some her up. Her statement | :02:16. | :02:22.
showed she loved the Army, even then. Now, aged 25, she has been | :02:22. | :02:29.
killed in Afghanistan. Channing Day was with the patrol in Nahri Saraj | :02:30. | :02:34.
when she was killed. An Afghan, believed to be a policeman not in | :02:34. | :02:38.
uniform at the time, was also killed. A spokesperson be the | :02:38. | :02:41.
Ministry of Defence has said they don't care what initiated exchange | :02:41. | :02:51.
of gunfire -- they don't know what initiated the exchange of gunfire. | :02:51. | :02:58.
Back home in Northern Ireland, those who knew her are stunned. | :02:58. | :03:06.
Every pupil, we remember. I remember her... It becomes more and | :03:06. | :03:13.
more poignant. Because somebody who is so young has been killed in such | :03:13. | :03:19.
a tragic way. The First Minister has paid tribute. Here is the young | :03:19. | :03:25.
woman who clearly deserved eight when it was needed. It will be a | :03:25. | :03:31.
major blow to the local community, devastating to the family. This | :03:31. | :03:34.
cenotaph commemorates members of the armed forces from Comber who | :03:34. | :03:41.
have been killed while on service. Now, other names but be added. Like | :03:41. | :03:45.
so many before her, Channing Day lost her life in a war far from | :03:45. | :03:53.
home. Arrangements are now being made to repatriate her body. | :03:53. | :03:56.
The UK armed forces have been in Afghanistan since 2001 when they | :03:56. | :04:01.
joined the NATO invasion in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. The | :04:01. | :04:03.
news of the latest death has brought back painful memories for | :04:03. | :04:13.
:04:13. | :04:19. | ||
other service families here. Images hard to forget. Towns and villages | :04:19. | :04:21.
across Northern Ireland coming to a standstill for the funeral of a | :04:22. | :04:29.
soldier. Soon, the same silence will fall in Comber. In March 2011, | :04:29. | :04:34.
this town was in mourning. Shops closed and hundreds gathered to pay | :04:34. | :04:38.
their this -- pay their respects to lance-corporal Stephen the key. On | :04:38. | :04:43.
Tuesday, the 27-year-old was the last soldier here to die in | :04:43. | :04:51.
Afghanistan. The others, it a 20- year-old Ranger, a 22-year-old | :04:51. | :05:01.
:05:01. | :05:03. | ||
Ranger, a 26-year-old, a 42-year- old, another 42-year-old, a 22- | :05:03. | :05:13.
year-old, a 28-year-old and a captain, who was 38. Brenda's | :05:13. | :05:16.
husband is among those faces. She knows the pain and grief of losing | :05:17. | :05:22.
a loved one on duty in Afghanistan. When you hear news that another to | :05:22. | :05:27.
have paid the ultimate sacrifice, it brings you right back to the day | :05:27. | :05:34.
-- another two. The sadness that you feel for those families and | :05:34. | :05:40.
what they're going through it is quite intolerable. I can't even | :05:40. | :05:45.
imagine how they feel. But all I know is that in the coming days, | :05:45. | :05:51.
through the repatriation, they're going to need peace and quiet time. | :05:51. | :05:58.
Difficult days ahead for a family coming to terms with such a loss. | :05:58. | :06:01.
You can find much more background and analysis on UK troops in | :06:01. | :06:05.
Afghanistan on the BBC News website. You can find that in the Special | :06:05. | :06:15.
:06:15. | :06:16. | ||
Reports section. Still to come on the programme: | :06:16. | :06:25.
It's been a very big day in the North West. I'll be taking a look | :06:25. | :06:32.
at the programme for the City of Culture Day. A County Antrim man | :06:32. | :06:36.
has admitted stabbing his mother to death on Mother's Day last year. | :06:36. | :06:41.
Lynn Coburn was found dead in her home in the village of Kells. Today | :06:41. | :06:44.
her 35-year-old son John pleaded guilty to her manslaughter on the | :06:44. | :06:51.
grounds of diminished responsibility. | :06:51. | :06:53.
Since April, seven potential victims of trafficking have been | :06:53. | :07:03.
:07:03. | :07:04. | ||
rescued in Northern Ireland. Over the last three years the total is | :07:04. | :07:07.
81 people, according to the police. There are many community and | :07:07. | :07:10.
voluntary organisations who are working with the police to tackle | :07:10. | :07:12.
the problem. One is the Soroptimists, which is holding its | :07:12. | :07:15.
international annual conference in Belfast over the next few days. | :07:15. | :07:19.
Donna is there this evening. Yes, it's difficult to calculate the | :07:19. | :07:23.
exact number of women and girls who are forced to travel het or who | :07:23. | :07:28.
travel under false pretences and find themselves working in the sex | :07:29. | :07:36.
industry or as domestics the servants. If the police are to bear | :07:36. | :07:39.
down on these criminals, we need to be more aware of the problem here | :07:39. | :07:43.
on the ground. The Soroptimists doing their part in the campaign, | :07:43. | :07:47.
so for a lot of people it is slavery. But they don't realise it | :07:47. | :07:51.
is happening here. Yes, it is happening everywhere in the United | :07:51. | :07:56.
Kingdom. There are over 2.5 million people could affect every year into | :07:56. | :08:06.
the UK, 85 % of whom are women -- people traffic to every year. It is | :08:06. | :08:11.
making millions of pounds every year. So what other Soroptimists | :08:11. | :08:16.
doing to make us more aware of that? We are working with a charity | :08:16. | :08:20.
which started as a Soroptimists charity. It is one of the reasons | :08:21. | :08:24.
we will be there tomorrow wearing purple on the waterfront, to show | :08:24. | :08:29.
our solidarity that we must strive some way to end this terrible crime | :08:29. | :08:35.
against women and girls. It is our mission as Soroptimists to do that. | :08:35. | :08:37.
You're President of the Soroptimists this year. A lot of | :08:37. | :08:42.
people will not know the name and they will not know what you do. | :08:42. | :08:47.
Apart from raising awareness about human trafficking, who are you? | :08:47. | :08:50.
are an international women's service organisation, working to | :08:50. | :08:58.
transform the lives of women and girls worldwide. Our name is | :08:58. | :09:08.
:09:08. | :09:12. | ||
derived from the Latin, which means sister. We work from the Caribbean | :09:12. | :09:15.
and the east, across Europe, and into South Africa. Many of the | :09:15. | :09:21.
things we're trying to do is to educate women, with skills such as | :09:22. | :09:27.
dressmaking, cookery. I was recently in South Africa when I saw | :09:27. | :09:31.
the effects of women who had learned how to embroider, and there | :09:31. | :09:37.
are now being employed to earn a living for themselves. They are | :09:37. | :09:40.
buying their own homes. These people live in shacks and they now | :09:40. | :09:46.
have built houses and art doing extensions to them as they speed | :09:46. | :09:52.
today. The here at the conference, they went to stop about human | :09:52. | :10:02.
:10:02. | :10:06. | ||
trafficking, but other issues -- they went to just talk about. | :10:06. | :10:09.
Hundreds of events have been announced for the first UK City of | :10:09. | :10:11.
Culture year in Londonderry. The London Symphony Orchestra will | :10:11. | :10:14.
perform and the Royal Ballet will pay its first visit in over 20 | :10:14. | :10:17.
years. The programme for 2013 was announced in Derry today. Sarah is | :10:17. | :10:25.
there for us. Sarah. Yes, you join me from a civic reception being | :10:25. | :10:31.
held at this city hotel to celebrate the launch of the | :10:31. | :10:34.
programme for 2013. There are hundreds of events to come. There | :10:34. | :10:38.
are so many for me to list right now. We thought we would get some | :10:38. | :10:48.
:10:48. | :10:50. | ||
help from local school children to talk us through the highlights. | :10:50. | :11:00.

has been nearly two-and-a-half years since of Derry found out it | :13:07. | :13:13.
was going to be the first island city of culture. The official | :13:13. | :13:19.

The line-up for next year offers a diverse range of music, drama and | :14:04. | :14:09.
dance. The organisers are confident it will be embraced by everyone. In | :14:09. | :14:14.

20131 BBC Newsline. It is absolutely fantastic. And would | :14:24. | :14:30.
like to think everybody could find something they would enjoy. Derry | :14:30. | :14:34.
needs something like this. It will bring everybody together. It is | :14:34. | :14:39.
just the best thing. There is something there for everybody. | :14:40. | :14:45.
There are lots of times people seedings on TV and it is all bad. | :14:45. | :14:49.
Something like this, where it has come for the first time, it's | :14:49. | :14:52.
absolutely amazing. The City is generating lots of headlines today | :14:52. | :14:57.
and many hope it is the start of something significant. What we | :14:57. | :15:01.
expect to get from the next year it is not just a change in visitor | :15:01. | :15:09.
numbers in Derry, but more importantly, it establishes dairy | :15:09. | :15:15.
as a go to place the talented people to want to study, work, live | :15:15. | :15:24.

Throughout the day has been our arts correspondent. A big day for | :16:04. | :16:09.
the City today, but the few bumps along the road. Compaq has been | :16:09. | :16:14.
controversy about who would be dealing with marketing. People are | :16:14. | :16:18.
cynical about things like this and saying la Mac are too many hiccups, | :16:18. | :16:24.
it is too slow. Party would be hard to find any festival like this | :16:24. | :16:34.
where there would not be her cups. Hopefully, this will be the same. | :16:34. | :16:42.
If we look at sea you may yet events, it is taken place in Durham | :16:42. | :16:47.
before. 150,000 people came. Can Deri could quiz Mac I had been | :16:47. | :16:56.
speaking to people who run the hotels. That is a bit of a | :16:56. | :17:01.
difficulty. People are being asked to provide their own accommodation. | :17:01. | :17:07.
When you had the Irish Open golf, they did not stay. They will be | :17:07. | :17:15.
able to take advantage of hotel rooms elsewhere. We heard my cue | :17:15. | :17:20.
raised issues about whether you can market this successfully on a | :17:20. | :17:24.
national and international stage. Even if you take the last couple of | :17:24. | :17:34.
days alone, we are in The Guardian tomorrow, the Irish Times on | :17:34. | :17:39.
Saturday. If you look at the City today, it is dressed for the City | :17:39. | :17:49.
:17:49. | :17:50. | ||
of Culture, 2013. I really think this is the moment. The word is out | :17:50. | :17:55.
there. Everybody always brings it back to the legacy. What do you | :17:55. | :18:00.
think that dopey for the people of this city and the surrounding area? | :18:00. | :18:10.
:18:10. | :18:11. | ||
I think it would become undoubtedly economic. Major events throughout | :18:11. | :18:18.
the entire year. Economic benefits, but more importantly, it is the | :18:18. | :18:27.
light that will spark. It is that spark that is the inspiration of an | :18:27. | :18:32.
incredible sporting activity. are not finished. Join me later, | :18:32. | :18:37.
but when will be talking to Phil colder. | :18:37. | :18:39.
The awards just keep on coming for Gaelic football's All-Ireland | :18:39. | :18:43.
champions. Austin O'Callaghan's here with news of another trophy | :18:43. | :18:51.
The All Stars are handed out each year to 15 of Ireland's best Gaelic | :18:51. | :18:56.
footballers. The selections, made by GAA journalists, often generate | :18:56. | :19:01.
debate. They certainly did in our office! But there were few | :19:01. | :19:10.
arguments today with Donegal's Went Donegal proved they were the | :19:10. | :19:20.
:19:20. | :19:21. | ||
best in the land, celebrations were inevitably followed. 33 teams | :19:21. | :19:29.
compete, just under 1,000 players played in this year's championship. | :19:29. | :19:35.
8 a from Donegal. A We are delighted. My heart will always go | :19:35. | :19:45.
up to the players. All stars always divide opinion anyway. We are | :19:45. | :19:51.
delighted we got the eight we have got. It is a very good haul. It is | :19:51. | :19:59.
great for the players themselves. It caps of a really good year. | :19:59. | :20:05.
even better year for three of them. They make up three nominations for | :20:05. | :20:09.
the 20 top player of the year, announced tomorrow night. But the | :20:09. | :20:14.
best player in the land or become the best team in the land, Donegal. | :20:14. | :20:21.
It is lovely that it will be a Donegal player. There is very | :20:21. | :20:27.
little between them. We also have Patrick for young player of the | :20:27. | :20:31.
year. We will keep our fingers crossed for him as well. His is | :20:31. | :20:34.
looking likely Donegal clean sweep, and the manager is already planning | :20:35. | :20:39.
next year, hoping it will be just as successful. | :20:39. | :20:42.
The Ulster rugby team has four changes for tomorrow's Pro12 League | :20:42. | :20:46.
game away to the Dragons. Paul Marshall, who missed out on Ireland | :20:46. | :20:49.
selection this week, comes back into the side at scrum-half with | :20:49. | :20:51.
South African international Ruan Pienaar moving to fly-half in place | :20:51. | :20:58.
of Paddy Jackson. He'll start the evening on the bench. Craig Gilroy, | :20:58. | :21:00.
Lewis Stevenson and Declan Fitzpatrick are all in the starting | :21:00. | :21:06.
15. Tommy Bowe is named a full-back. But Stephen Ferris still out with a | :21:06. | :21:11.
back injury. Both Michael Hoey and Rory McIlroy | :21:11. | :21:14.
carded rounds of five under par and are tied for fourth after the first | :21:14. | :21:20.
day of the BMW Masters in China. Graeme McDowell is two shots | :21:20. | :21:24.
further back on three under. World Number One McIlroy hit this | :21:24. | :21:27.
magnificent approach on the way to a birdie at the 18th and joined his | :21:27. | :21:33.
fellow countryrman Hoey on five under. But he described his round | :21:33. | :21:42.
as solid rather than spectacular. This golf course is pretty generous. | :21:42. | :21:48.
You hit a lot of fairways. You have got pretty big targets hit. If you | :21:49. | :21:55.
hit the ball decently, you will give yourself plenty of chances. It | :21:55. | :22:03.
was a solid round of golf. I am happy with it. A big tournament | :22:03. | :22:13.
:22:13. | :22:13. | ||
coming up. No secret that I am going to Dubai. I want to play well. | :22:13. | :22:15.
Every school's cup team enjoys winning trophies. But one hockey | :22:15. | :22:18.
side from Banbridge are particularly good at it. They've | :22:18. | :22:21.
beaten the best teams north and south for the last two years. Now | :22:21. | :22:23.
Banbridge Academy have their sights set on winning the All-Ireland | :22:23. | :22:27.
schools title for the third year in a row. And they certainly look the | :22:27. | :22:36.
team to beat again, judging by what we saw today. | :22:36. | :22:40.
The All Ireland schools' hockey tournament brings 16 of Ireland's | :22:40. | :22:46.
best teams together, but most eyes on the guys in red. Pam Bridge says | :22:46. | :22:56.
:22:56. | :22:56. | ||
there is no secret to their success. We spent a lot of time preparing | :22:56. | :23:01.
and practising, but we put in a lot of value on team spirit as well and | :23:01. | :23:07.
good attitude. We asked a lot of our players, but are delighted that | :23:07. | :23:15.
they deliver high standards. It is the camaraderie we get from each | :23:15. | :23:20.
other. We have got a great coaching staff, we looked the part, and we | :23:20. | :23:28.
enjoy it. The school enjoys a proud hockey tradition. Past people's | :23:28. | :23:33.
have gone on to represent Ireland. This is a change the coaches are | :23:33. | :23:38.
keen to continue. You have a positive role models that the young | :23:38. | :23:42.
players look up to. They are trained to follow the example of | :23:42. | :23:51.
people set. I would certainly argue strongly that schools' hockey is a | :23:51. | :23:55.
really good starting-point for all of these players. The more that | :23:55. | :23:59.
they can get from school hockey, the more benefit they will have | :23:59. | :24:05.
laid in their career. Linfield have issued a lifetime ban | :24:05. | :24:08.
